Radical. Often lectures about a given topic and 'goes on a tangent'. REALLY enphisizes new, different, and often controversial ideas, and credits students able to take these ideas and creatively expand on them.

different from any prof i've had. pretty challenging because of that but really interesting too. he makes you think instead of memorize, which is good according to me. he doesn't need to be right all the time either, it actually seems like he doesn't care about being right or wrong.

Demands a very large amount of participation. Class makes you think. Very intelligent man, can be somewhat overbearing in leading discussions. Don't take his class if you plan on being a wallflower. Must work hard for A's.

This class isn't some typical primer on sociology where you learn from Powerpoint. It's a class based on debate and discourse--and if you enjoy such things, it's a ton of fun. Interesting topics and format, cool prof who actually gets to know his students and likes teaching.

Class seemed interesting,but really only average disscussion-not worth the time or effort. He's a really nice guy, but an incredibly hard marker.I left confused about what sociology is and completely disinterested. If you are at all shy, find a different prof - everything is based on public speaking

Dr.Doug is a really interesting and passionate guy. his class was very different for anything ive ever taken. you barely crack the text, as it is mostly about the class' idea and view point. be prepared for and anal essay marker!! good class and easy if you participate. take it!

Great prof who actually makes an effort to get to know individual students. Lots of class discussion which makes the class extremely interactive. Perfect structure for a theory-based class. Oh. And he is definitely the hottest prof on campus (and if you think otherwise, he'll beat you down with some wicked karate moves).

Excellent, and often controversial, Professor Aoki's class islike no other I've taken. Discussions are frank, and as affecting and insightful as they are frequently vulgar. Highly recommended, but only if you undergo a serious recto-ingotectomy (the medical procedure involving the removal of sticks from asses).

This is the worst prof in the history of profs. His class is boring, and you can tell he just likes to hear himself talk. He wastes tons of class time just talking about nothing important, and it's super boring.

Doug is not like ordinary profs. He makes that clear on the first day. He is more like an acorn tree dropping acorn clusters of ideas/situations on the ground and students are like squirrels in that they try and grab at the cluster of ideas and we figure out on our own what it means for us. He doesn't teach,he makes you think harder outside the box

Doug is one of the best profs in the Soc dept, he will bend over backwards to help his students. His class challenges how you think, he tells you it'll be different and somewhat unsettling from the very first day and he's not joking. You don't "learn" in his class but change how you think about the world. Plus he has a smokin' hot bod.

Doug is an excellent Prof, always willing to help his students out. Doug challenges his students to critically think and not just ramble off something from a textbook; I can really respect and appreciate that. Do not get too distracted by his ravishing looks and charm.

This is a fantastic course! It is definitely unlike any course I've ever taken, it requires a lot of thinking and desire to explore ideas. You learn a lot about yourself and your thoughts, but you must be open minded! Not easy but worth every minute! Just try not to drift off in a day dream while you gaze at the dreamy proff ;)

If you want to learn something "useful" then go to trade school. That's what they're there for. I enrolled in university to challenge my imagination and think. And being in Doug's class is like running a 10 km marathon uphill followed by a sucker punch to the brain. Did Michelangelo sculpt him? I can barely sleep lately thinking about his looks.

dougs class is insightful, and crude. His marking is kind of hard, but he'll help you with your papers. You think about class subject matter outside of class often. Good for theorizing. The web board sucked.

Ok, seriously...could the guy be more of a BULLY? I don't think so. Trying to intimidate students into taking opportunities when they dont care (and YES some of us even believe we deserve poor marks and won't argue with grades or say they are unfair) is an annoying way to spend 30 minutes every class.

The best class I ever took in my undergraduate years. It will make you uncomfortable, and it will force to to think hard & alot. Subject matter:beauty,love,knowledge. 3 papers, show-and-tell, & discussant. Do not be intimidated, this course will open your eyes. Doug is daunting, shifts your comfort zone - but, ALWAYS makes you think.

Doug is a paradox. Amazing for some, awful for others. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. I recommend his classes as strongly as I can, but you have to go in expecting to be challenged on every opinion you bring, nothings free.

I learned more from Doug then most of my other profs...combined! Participation is a must, both in class and on the web board. Makes you think in ways you never thought possible. I cannot recommend his classes highly enough.

Come to class, it's small enough that he will notice. You don't come to this class to memorize names of theorizers or theories. Doug asks you the hard questions, about life, love, and the world around us. You get from this course as much as you decide to take from it. Its probably not gonna help build the foundation for later soc courses though

One of the best classes I have ever taken in university. For those Soc majors taking the 333 degree requirement, take it with Doug! Super fun class and easy marks. Fantastic class discussion. No textbook - $20 for photocopied readings about every 2 weeks. Assignments were fun and short, just put some thought into them and you will do great!

I have learned a lot, none of it is good. I didn't enjoy this class and I definitely don't recommend taking it. I think it's cruel to attempt to introduce counter-hegemonic pedagogy to 3rd year university students. If you like essay topics like, "Write something good" take this class. Personally, I still wish I'd dropped out in the first week.

Doug is the best professor i've ever had at the University. He applies real world knowledge about love, health, and education to texts and makes them relevant and appealing. If you are looking for a low maintenance class and have thoughts about anything this class is definitely a GPA booster.

If you are good at writing essays, you should be able to get a great mark. His class is fun, interesting, and quite different than anything you'll take as an intro sociology class. I'd definitely recommend him.

Terrible prof. Scattered and nonsensical, clear guidelines were never given for assignments and marks often were unjustified or didn't make sense. Took forever to return marks. The worst part is that he pretends he is humble when in fact his ego is rather high, and no one seems to notice. I would stay away at all costs.

I wasn't aware that he was actually a professor. He didn't teach me anything. Aoki let the TA's teach 90% of the time and the only time you would see him would be during the actual group discussions. The only time you would need to read the textbook would be for the essays that made up the majority of your mark.

He is the most amazing Sociology Prof at the U of A! This class was extremely easy and its too bad that he may not be returning to the U of A! This class consisted of pretty much the simplest papers and participation that you will ever need in university! If Doug ever came back to teach, I would not hesitate to take a class with him!

How outrageous, a professor that requires students capable of creative thought and writing capabilities. If you are going into this class expecting to be taught, you will not find much satisfaction. If you want a class that challenges you to question reality, knowledge, morality of open-mindedness, then this is a class that will be auspicious.

At the beginning, I thought this class was going to be awful, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a really interesting class to be in and you definitely need to think outside the box for the papers. The only downside is that it requires a lot of work to get a decent participation mark (web boards, online journal, class discussion, etc.)

Best Sociology professor at the U of A. He will try to scare you in the first two weeks, but don't be fooled! This is the best class offered in the Sociology department, and you will leave thinking differently about the world and about yourself. As long as you are honest in your papers and show effort, he is not a hard marker. RECOMMENDED!
