If you are an Econ major, take Blair, Stay on top of readings, work hard, get an A, and be prepared for Intermediate Micro
dont do it.
Hard, but manageable. You do learn!
Hard class, but you do learn! Make sure you do your readings. Talks as if you know the material. Takes attendance. Homework is a pain. Exams will be painful if you don't study. Curves.
This guy is beyond hard. You will struggle on his homeworks. He does NOT teach by the book. You don't even have to bother reading the book because it won't help you.
he's the reason i changed my major. don't do it. just save yourself...and run.
Hes pretty tough. If you love aggregate demand then you love Blair. He makes learning SUCK. Mundane. The final is 30,000 questions of impossible, pure, economic enjoyment.
he's a douche, plain and simple. u get up to elave class he yells at u. by the way, he blows, dont take him.
He should be a CEO of a company, not teaching students. Snobby and elitest, he treats easy material with complexities unimaginable.
I studied a lot so I was able to get an A. If you hate studying, don't take him as a teacher. BTW, his slide printouts that he makes you buy are very helpful.
this guy should be doin commercials for eyedrops...boring as hell...tries his best to use 12 letter words in the place of 5 letter words..this guy should not be teaching he should be collecting taxes or somthing..i cant imagine him having a friend.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. First Economics class I took at Rutgers... Couldn't get into the business school with my grade. He's boring, MEAN, confusing... the WORST professor I've had in three years here/
The worst professor there is, hands down.
He is a tough teacher. You study your ass off youll get bs on the first couple exam and a D on the final. Im intelligent. It was tough. Try and avoid.
This class is crap! It is impossible to try to keep up with his BS slides and lecture. The homeworks are ridiculous and the guy is a d-head. Worst grade I got at Rutgers! Do not take this class if you like your GPA.
dont take him..i took him freshman year..failed it and changed by major from business because of him..one of the worst professors around
Taking Blair is a freshman mistake and I made a mistake. Even if you're really into econ, the environment he creates is not conducive to learning. Even if you pull off an A, its a lose lose situation.
Not that bad. Has an Unduly harsh reputation
um.. didn't think it was bad... i did pretty nice in the class, but he did talk to me after class because i kept falling asleep or something.
This was the worst class i have ever been in my life!! he is the worst professor known to mankind , if you enjoy sleeping in class then take him --
Professor Blair is very knowledgeable but sometimes he goes through his lectures very quickly. Final exam was very hard. Responsive to emails, but sometimes makes you feel even more confused after asking him a questions. He held a review session before the final. 2 midterms, a final, class participation, and homework. Honors section has a paper
He is a very knowledgeable and a very helpful professor. He is very prepared and iClicker questions are easy! As long as you show up to class, and do the online homework assignments you shouldn't have trouble getting an A. However to get an A, you can either pay attention in class or you can read the chapters he assigns from the book.
Not the best, but not the worst either. I'm not so interested in econ, so my mind would wander from his dry presentation of dry material. He seemed enthusiastic about econ but it didn't rub off. I liked the review sheets he sent out -- copies of old tests. If you can get a better prof you prob should, but staying in his class is not 100% horrible.
I don't understand all of these horrible ratings... not a bad professor.
easiest class i ever took didnt even have to go to it just study a little before the exam and got and A the questions are so easy that i could answer them without even reading the book
Intermediate Micro- difficult subject which Blair only made more confusing. His powerpoint slides (which he refuses to post on the internet) were difficult to follow as he skimmed through the lecture like a porsche on an autobon. Attending class was useless but if you didn't you didn't even have a shot at the clicker points. Passed me so I <3 him
If youre looking for an easy A, youve come to the wrong guy. If youre looking to be thoroughly prepared in economics, hes your guy. Hes superintelligent and (especially in office hours) rather funny. Watch out for iClicker quizzes and do Aplia. He can get angry; don't pack up before he declares lecture to be over and don't talk during it.
Definitely not an easy A, but not terribly hard either. Classes can be boring, but that's just the nature of economics. He tries to crack some jokes during class; sometimes he succeeds, other times he doesn't. I'd describe the exams as challenging. The online assignments aren't too hard and they help with the understanding of the subject matter.
Worst teacher I had freshmen year. His lectures are beyond boring and he doesn't keep the class engaged at all. I had to teach myself alot. The two tests during the semester aren't too hard, but forget about the final. The class average for the final was 56. Wouldn't such a result tell a teacher something is wrong? Not this guy, avoid at all costs.
I thought he was a great teacher; my best teacher yet at Rutgers. Incredibly smart, you could just tell. Yes, the final test average was a 56... but he understands that he isn't here to give you easy tests and an easy class. He wants you to understand the material inside and out. And now I'm thinking of switching into economics.
The two midterm exams aren't hard (40% of grade). The homework is online and is easy if you do the practice problems (10% of grade). iClicker attendance (10%). Final exam (40% of grade)class avg was 56, but it was definitely curved a IMMENSE deal. His class requires a lot of effort and I worked hard for an A. advice: study with friends
Professor Blair is a devoted economist but only a mediocre professor. It was really an effort to pay attention in class. There is also a lot of work that you need to do, and you use an online textbook, which isn't so great either.
Great professor. His class is a lot of work: tests, online homework and iClicker points. His final was difficult; he wanted to gain a sense of who *really* understood things by the end, and curved accordingly. He was incredibly helpful and attentive in the Sakai chatroom. He's funny and nice as long as you observe proper class etiquette.
Hard teacher, tries to joke around but is not good at it, expects you to assume a lot of the times. If you want to pass a micro class without being frustrated every time you enter class or go to do homework, don't take Blair.
THE WORST CLASS WITH THE WORST TEACHER. i didnt know comparative politics consisted of math, well now it does. does not explain anything. does not care tht he is doing such a bad job n it either. u will fail or do really bad in his classes.
will defintely help if you need it, but you will defintely need help if you have him. sooo boring makes micro even more boring. exams are tough and he rants and rants about things that dont even show up on the exams. if you have him the book will be ur world, but attendance is required as he uses the iclicker
Never have I had a professor, until this semester, who managed an average of 2.3 slides a minute for 90 minutes, every class. his lectures have little correlation to the exams, and his class has very little relation to the course title. You will how to use economics to support hypothesis; you will not learn anything about standard comparative pol.
boring class and professor
Good teacher if you actually want to learn. The class is a lot of work (slides, textbook, iClicker, & aplia). It gets boring at times if you have no interest in the topic. But he is a good teacher.I got an A but I had to put ALOT of work into the course. He's helpful during office hours, I went only once but he was nice & helpful.
Took Blair for Comparitive Politics. While this class is NOT Economics (which i heard he is much harder for), he is NOT that hard for Comparitive Politics. If u go to class, do the HW, study your notes and his slides you will do great. I got an A and while I worked hard, I didn't bust my butt. He is extremely helpful in all aspects. Not bad at all
Concepts are difficult. Prof Blair is SO nice and helpful, go to office hours if you are having trouble. Do homework. Attend Lectures. One of the nicest professors i've had.
Great teacher if you want to learn. I highly recommend attending some of his office hours. He will help you very much and he has entioned "tipping the scale" in your favor if you improve and he sees your work ethic. Homework and readings every single class. Don't skip lectures either. Sometimes pretty boring, but its all about your interest level.
I really had a hard time with this class, but Professor Blair is a very understanding and kind person...so go to him if you start having trouble!
Good Professor. Lectures can be boring but they are useful. Read the book, do the hw, and attend lecture and you will do fine. Exams and final are easy and straightforward.
-boring, uninteresting, EXTREMLY EXTREMLY HARD ... lectures are mandatory, yet useless and unbeaerable. he is not a nice guy, a red sox fan (ew), speaks in language that most college kids don't relate to and makes micro hard to understand. his test sare extremly random and not at all straight forward. must study study study to do well. avoid!!!
Blair isn't that bad if you stay on top of the work and go to class. His lectures and the book can be confusing, so the best way to do well is to do all the homework. His tests are somewhat tough but very fair, so as long as you study and work you'll be fine. He knows econ inside out and will have no problem helping you. Not easy, but fair.
Best prof. in the econ dept. for sure, probably one of the best at RU. Genius, great sense of humor, and unbelievably patient. Before his class I did not consider myself a math person at all, but with his help I can now do crazy calc 3 stuff with ease. He's awesome!
He is obviously not an easy A. However, he can be an easy B if you just keep up with homeworks. He makes you sign up for Aplia which costs $80. Aplia assignments are helpful, but his exams are hard. He is helpful after class even though he is sarcastic at times. His lectures are a little hard to understand, but no doubt they are helpful.
I wrote the last comment and mistakenly marked him useless. He is actually helpful.
took him for micro in fall of 09. thought class easy and he was very intelligent. just read the textbook, listen to him and go to office hours to ask questions and clarify things and i guarantee you will get an easy A. he curves too but wasn't necessary
If you are an econ major or minor, this guy is your man. If you are only taking econ courses for elective credit, I highly recommend that you stay away. There is a lot of calculus involved and there aren't easy A assignments. However, he weights your later test and final a lot higher, so you can do quite well even after failing the first test.
Has nothing to do with comparative politics whatsoever. I imagine he's a great econ teacher but as far as comparative politics goes, the class drags on forever and i don't feel any more intelligent leaving this class than i did entering it. We learned game theory for a majority of it and we didn't compare any political systems at all.
I had him for intro and intermediate micro. He is probably one of the BEST econ profs at RU, and even one of the best overall. The material is hard, esp since I don't think I'm a math person. But he's so patient, understanding and enthusiastic that if you ask questions, he will make sure you leave knowing & fully understanding the answer. Take him.
It was a really hard class because his lectures were really boring. The material in the book is alright, but he makes it so UNBELIEVABLY BORING. I worked really hard in the class and still managed to not do so well. A lot of people struggled that I talked to. Definitely would NOT recommend this class to other people.
Professor Blair is HILARIOUS and one of the kindest and most helpful Comparative Politics professors ever. Those who say otherwise were expecting this class to be an easy A. Yes, you have to study, but why is that surprising? He loves answering questions, and is not out to fail his students.
Not a bad professor. He definitely knew what he was talking about though not easy for others to understand. Just read the book and cram it all in before the exam and it will be easy to get an A, especially because he gives very generous curves.
Difficult class and at times difficult to understand, but willing to go the extra mile to help.
nice guy that tries to keep his classes interesting. definitely helpful. his tests arent that hard and you should take some notes and listen because some of the material you wont learn from the text or aplia, simply his powerpoints
apart from having to buy the textbook, you have to pay for aplia (extra $90). his lectures are extremely boring. definitely read the chapter beforehand. it's helpful in understanding the lecture. the exams are hard but he gives generous curves.
Blair is the best professor at Rutgers. Yea aplia is $90 and that sucks, but he uses it for good reason. I swear if you read all the chapters on time and do all the practice assignments, you should get an A. Professor Blair is the only professor who writes to each student to tell them their grade. And he cares a lot. He's the best ever.
Somewhat interesting lecture, explains pretty well. Reading the book is the most important, uses clicker so attendance is mandatory. Tests aren't too hard if you read the book.
His lectures are very boring, but you have to attend because he gives clicker questions that count towards your grade. He is definately helpful, he is always having office hours and encourages everyone to go. The exams are ok just study a lot for them. This class takes up a lot of time so be ready
Professor is very helpful. He prepares the students well by Aplia and practice exercises. However, the course is lengthy and difficult. In addition, tricky question due to 5 multiple choices makes it difficult on exams. He is very nice and helpful. He wants the students to learn. Also does a good curve.
I got an A. Lectures are mandatory (around one iClicker question a day). This class was very difficult for me and I really disliked his explanation of concepts (he explains more through memorization style rather than common sense style). What I mean by this is his explanations are much complex then they need to be. Also online HW very timeconsuming
Prof Blair's class was challenging, but if you go to his office hours you'll realize how much he cares about you and helping you learn!
Avoid Him if you can, he is extremely boring and his exams are pretty tough. He makes micro seem harder than it is.
not fun to have as a teacher, boring, monotonous, and useless, read the book and youll be better off than going to class
Though it's true that he's sometimes hard to follow, it really helps if you just read the book. He actually sacrifices alot of his time to make extra hours of help in addition to his office hours. He also holds additional review lectures prior to exams. He even sends out individual exam analysis to each student, and prompt in responding to emails.
Blair is the man. I didn't find him hard to follow, but I also tried to read in advance. I got an A and worked hard for it. BUT im taking intermediate micro now and since Blair taught so well, I never go to class and have a near 100% average. Take this guy.
Not an easy a but it is possible to do well if you learn the material. Has iclicker questions so attendance is taken. Is helpful during office hours and really knows what he is teaching. Try and you will do well.
The class seems to be a little too based in political science theories/methods not on actually comparing the politics of other countries. The class can be easy if you truly work for a good grade, and REALLY enjoy political science. Go to class, because he uses i-clicker, and he counts it towards your grade.
He can be hard to follow at times and some of his lecture slides are confusing but he really makes himself available for help if you need it and offers plenty of studying resources. The textbook is available online through aplia but you can get a hardcopy if you want to. Overall nice guy, just study hard for the exams!
Put effort into Aplia homework; you need a really high percentage like 96% to get full 10 points for it. You could probably pass exams without going to lecture, but there are clicker questions. READ THE BOOK. It's pretty easy to understand. He's incredibly helpful. Use his office hours. He's a great guy..so nice.
I found blair very hard to follow during lectures. i actually cleared myself up while reading the book afterward. he uses the most complicated ways of explaining simple terms and ideas. i recieved a 64 52 and 53 on the final and ended up with a C. i recommend staying away from this teacher.
Blair is such a nice guy, but a terrible lecturer. His exams are pretty tough too, but he gives a huge curve. Just read the textbook
Probably the worst lecturer ever. Makes things incredibly difficult to understand, and talks about nearly nothing that will be on exams. His class is literally all textbook. Don't expect study guides, example problems, or any help from Blair in getting prepared for the exams. Very condenscending and non helpful though he thinks he is. Avoid
he needs to understand that we were not all born knowing the material. originally an econ professor, was terrible in explaining anything. DONT TAKE. my TA saved my life and i ended up with an A. its all up to how your TA is.
Despite the intimidating impression he gives in lecture, he is actually a very nice and helpful professor outside of the classroom. He's very challenging and he will make you work for your A. With that said, he still does give generous curves. I recommend him if you're an econ major. If you're not, I suggest you take a different section.
Blair is a great teacher. Yes his exams are challenging and his slides can be confusing, but he is always available and willing to help. If you read the book and go to him with questions you will have no trouble in his class. Also he likes to act like he's a tough guy but he's actually a nice guy
Stay away from this professor. Although he doesn't totally and completely suck, there are better options for professors. A lot of unnecessary work for the class, and he is not really clear at explaining himself. He relies heavily on the textbook and material is pretty hard. His class has a recitation, should take different prof without one.
not that good and not that bad. read book carefully and u will get good results
This teabag doesn't prepare you at all for the exams but if you actually read the textbook on time and do all the aplia you should pull at least a B
This guy does not know how to teach. Lectures are extremely boring. Take another professor if you actually want to learn economics and get a good grade while doing so.
His slides and explanations are really tricky, but he's nice and really cares about you succeeding if you go to him for extra help. Read the book to understand the material better. There's a lot of extra work, but it's not that difficult. Your grade is based on how you rank in class.
Prof Blair is a really nice person once you get to know him but he is a terrible lecturer. His exams are very difficult and he makes microeconomics seem a lot more complex than it really is. Class is mandatory and he kicks students out frequently during the lectures. He definitely knows what he is talking about though.
Blair is a very caring and knowledgeable professor, however that doesn't translate into being the best teacher. The class is difficult and it takes a lot of effort, readings, and homework to keep up. Unfortunately lectures make the content even more difficult than it already.
Dry lecturer, can be confusing, but pretty fair professor overall. Online homework 10%, clicker questions 10%, 2 exams 20% each & cumulative final 40%. read the textbook as it is easier to understand than lectures (which I stopped attending). Exams are confusing but he makes up for it with a massive curve (77.5 was an A- for an exam)
DONT TAKE HIM. horrible lecturer, and explains things horribly. will yell at anyone with a laptop or cell phone out. Only reason to go to class is iClicker questions because you dont learn anything. Got a C+, and even that was curved. Get someone else!
He seems not to be a baddy at all at the first sight. Then, after we have purchased the Aplia thing, he has changed. He doesn't care about students at ALL! I sent him email TWICE! I missed the quiz that worth 10% of the grade because I was sick. He didn't even reply. What an nice guy! : Don't take the course. I dropped it :D
Took Public Economics with Blair. He's a great guy and is super nice, but his lectures and exams were extremely confusing and overwhelming. Listening to his lectures and reading his powerpoint slides will not help you much. You MUST read the textbook chapters in detail and he will test you on maybe 4-5 main topics out of a gazillion topics.
He is a decent enough guy. He sees that people make an effort to try, but he just covers too much information in a semester. The final is cumulative and covers the entire textbook (25 chapters). This class is not worth it. He assigns A LOT of reading, and you need to read and understand the textbook to do well. Take an easier elective.
Yes, Public Economics is hard. Yes, it's a lot of work, and you're going to have to actually read the textbook. But Professor Blair has a charmingly dry sense of humor, and despite his intimidating demeanor during the first half of the semester, he's very kind to serious students who work diligently. His curve is also extremely generous. Fear not!
This micro class was extremely hard, his slides were mostly graphs and it was confusing. It felt as if the exams were on material that we never even went over. I don't recommend this class
He Actually thinks he's good
He Actually thinks he's good no way he studied
He gives weekly homework that doesn't pertain to the quizzes. The quizzes are very tricky and the time given to take the quiz is not enough. He also gives random iclicker questions, there is no pattern of when he gives them so attendance is kind of a must if you want to get credit. The recitations are helpful but not enough for the quizzes.
Blair is a funny n endearing guy but if u have a hard time comprehending economics then consider a different professor. The quizzes (we have 4 instead of 2 exams) are difficult imo because they dont match with the online hw. Probs not the best micro prof but he is rly open to helping his students n actually cares about you despite his large classes
Horrible lecturer, mean, will kick people out of a giant lecture hall for whispering to their neighbor. This man is not afraid to call anyone out for talking or using a cell phone in class because they are causing a "disruption" yet that is only causing even more of a disruption. Quizzes are extremely hard and recitation doesn't help.
Blair was decent. He spent a lot of time during lecture on topics most students understood and not enough time on the trickier concepts. One of the better Micro teachers.
Quizzes are not easy but he give generous curves. Work hard and you can get a good grade.
Blair is a wonderful person; he wants you to succeed in his class and appreciates students attending office hours. That being said, his lectures can be confusing so it is extremely IMPORTANT to do the reading and review his slides. The 4 quizzes he gives are cumulative and tough, but he gives a good curve. He was my favorite prof this semester.
Incredible teacher. Really knows what he's talking about, but can be dry if you're not interested in economics. Tries to take class to the next level by making real world connections and getting everyone involved. Do the homework and go to class and you'll be fine.
Lectures are boring and long, sometimes gives an iclicker quiz, but not many times. The textbook readings were easier to understand than the lectures, but he is very accommodating and easy to talk to.
Blair is an approachable professor who is more than willing to help. His HW assignments are weekly, but doable and his lectures aren't long but can be confusing at times. He gives four quizzes that really test the material so looking at the slides, taking notes, and sitting in lectures are crucial. He does give a great curve. Would recommend.
Quizzes are tough and rarely relate to homework, Aplia Assignments, and Lecture notes. Study the textbook and you should do fine. Professor Blair is funny and clearly knows the subject but is not clear in lecture. He is much clearer during office hours and you will have to work for an A.
He has 4 quizzes, each of which are worth 10% of your grade, instead of midterms. While it is really annoying to have a quiz every 4 to 6 weeks, it makes it so that when the final comes you are already super prepared. The quizzes were very tough tho. The class average on some of them was a 40 or less.
He is not a clear professor. I do not recommend taking a class with im.
quizzes are tough and you really need to study. he isn't clear sometimes but asking questions or going to his office hours/TA's office hours helps. iclicker and aplia assignments are mandatory. overall, he's okay but you really need to study
Bad professor. Lectures are not clear at all. A lot of homework that have nothing to do with the quizzes. You can study for 6 hours straight, and still fail a quiz.
Prof Blair was alright, his class consisted of 4 quizzes and a final. Quizzes were all very tough in my opinion- even ppl who study failed (20 questions on each quiz.) Gives lots of homework that has no correlation with his quizzes. Really have to put in the effort to pass with a good grade. Blair himself is always willing to help though.
Professor Blair is a fine professor but his lectures are sometimes difficult to keep up with. You have to read the textbook before and after each lecture. There's 4 quizzes and then a final, but the quizzes do prepare you for the final. He is also willing to help you pass.
Took his Choice and Strategy in Politics course. If you're a B average student who reads the material and skips a class or two throughout the entire semester you won't pass. You need to have a heavy background in game theory. Average for midterm was a 50%. The man is a genius, but he forget he's teaching students unfamiliar with the topic.
Tests are hard but curved. Make sure to read the textbook and review slides. stay for extra help, his class is really fast-paced and boring
Do not take. The other students could not keep up, and he goes over one topic the entire class, and not actually teaching us, just shows us a bunch of graphs. He was helpful in trying to help you, but it did not help. Other students in my class most definitely struggled with a 60 avg for our midterm.
Took his class in 2008 during the crash and all the news breaking around it. Either ECON102H or 201. Was lots of fun talking to him after class about it as it was happening. If I recall correctly I think he got me onto behavioral economics. Really smart guy.
Doesnt teach much and talks in circles. Pretends to be a liberal but his true views are obvious if you pay attention. Doesnt understand the millennials.
I had professor Blair for Inequality. While he can be very lecture heavy and can seem to have a tough time explaining stuff sometimes, he was very willing to help any students who did not understand him the first time. Very nice guy who wants you to do well. Attendance is not mandatory but to do well it is very recommended.
I took inequality with Professor Blair, and found some of the material to be challenging at first. The class was extremely interesting, but there was a lot of information covered. Both Professor Blair and the TA's went out of the way to ensure everyone was understanding the material. Very nice man that wants the best for his students.
great professor goes into depth in his lectures. if you are student that works hard and keeps up to date with material you will be fine nice man as well.
Great prof and very knowledgeable. The only grades are two papers (5-7pgs, 3pgs), two midterms, and a final plus some clicker questions that don't count for a lot. Blair emails back quickly and is always on the Sakai chatroom. The lecture slides are posted, but he gives so much extra info in class that it's worth going.
Took him for Inequality and he was okay. He is a boring lecturer, but you understand the material if you follow along. The TA's really tried to help with the class. The 3 exams had 4 open ended questions and he didn't tell you or the TA's what they were or what sections so you have to be really prepared. The paper is easy. There was a curve!
