Great teacher all around, quick to answer any emails and just makes the material easy to understand in his lectures. Read 70% of the book and you'll be fine. Really recommend him to any who needs any political science class.
Wonderful teacher. Funny, always keeping class interesting. He finds a way to make the class understandable and not boring! Cares a lot about students and will help you become a better student. My favorite Professor.
He was awesome! Very fun, and funny and extremely helpful. I'm actually taking him again because I had such a great experience.
A great professor. While he may not be the most engaging speaker, he knows so much about his subject and is constantly relating the textbooks to current events. He is also really funny. You will love him just as much as I did.
Great teacher!!! Fun and engaging, stays neutral on political topics, very helpful. I would definitely recommend taking this guy!
Amazing teacher! Exams are essay question format with 2 long essays and 3-5 short answer essays. There are 4 quizzes and he drops the lowest scored quiz. Aside from that, Douglas is a fun, non-biased professor who isn't afraid to speak the truth. Doug engages his students through humor and provides a unique and refreshing approach to learning.
Doug keeps things fresh and is always open to student participation. He creates a fair and respectful atmosphere and is always willing to listen. Not a hard class if you do the reading. Even if you don''t know political stuff he will make it approachable and fun. Most importantly you will learn a ton.
Tricky tests, but not terrible. I would definitely recommend this guy. Makes even US government sound fun.
Doug is very knowledgeable, makes material easy to follow by utilizing the text, and keeps it very interesting. You must read text to pass all tests. I did not understand government prior to his course, but now I can talk politics for the first time. He is understanding if personal issues arise - he wants you to succeed.
This teacher is entertaining and makes learning government fun. Make sure to take notes in class and complete the assigned readings. He expects you to know your stuff, but gives you a clear outline of what will be on the tests so you know what to study.
Doug is AMAZING! He is HILARIOUS!! He's a smart guy but does not have a sense of entitlement. He's respectful and he is all about communication. He's there for students.
Amazing teacher, has an awesome sense of humor and makes learning politics fun. The information in this class was very dense so be prepared to read.
Great teacher, prone to go off on tangents that are more interesting than the lecture. Smart, funny, low pressure. Tests are easy, just keep it simple. He doesn't like long winded answers. Very understanding with students.
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! THE MOST AMAZING HUMAN!
Amazing!
The Best Pro Ever
The best college teacher I've had so far, a friend recommended him. I've taken three classes with Byrd now, and now I want to take all the other classes he teaches. Great person to speak to about issues around the world, and he gives great academic advice. I can say that because of Byrd I want to be a political science major.
Such a good guy! I wasn't thrilled about taking gov but he makes it fun and interesting! Honestly the only reason I do good in his class is because I love listening to him talk
A true moderate on the political scale who encourages students to think critically and seek out real information. Doug is practical, funny, and full of knowledge. He would make a great politician if he wanted to sink down to that level.
Fantastic job of both being engaging, funny, knowledgeable and interesting. One of the absolute best teachers ive ever had. Ill be looking out for him in the future and attempting to take more classes of his!
Very fun and kind professor. Always there to help you if you need it.
Doug is very much for students and is always willing to help. He is also hilarious. By far the best professor !!
He should totally be a standup comedian. Funniest lectures ever. This class was a bright spot in my week.
By far one of my favorite teachers of all time. Doug is an amazing prof and just an all around great guy. He makes large, complex ideas easy to understand while making you laugh - like, really laugh. He also really cares about his students and the material he's teaching. Can't say enough good things about this guy. Amazing person, amazing teacher.
CAN'T SAY ENOUGH AMAZING THINGS ABOUT DOUG. Looked forward to class every week. Learned a ton and laughed a ton
THE BEST
A fantastically smart and level headed man. Easy going with a firm handshake. Easily one of the most understanding people I know. Take his class, it's great!
An incredible person! Just the type of guy you want to hang out with (not to mention a very, very great teacher)
Doug is the best teacher I've ever had. He treats students with dignity, his lectures are engaging and funny, and he doesn't equate his opinions to facts (which is what most Political Science teachers do). He'll write you a recommendation letter if you work hard, he'll help you if you need it, and he'll make the course content fun and interesting.
Doug is the best professor I have had. He respects all his students, and provides a great atmosphere for critical thinking. He is so funny, going to his class brightens up my schedule and he makes learning fun. Kind of an odd ball dude. Overall, I have learned a lot, not just about politics but about the future I see in myself because of his class.
Douglas is the funniest professor I have ever seen. I took a 2016 Election class with him, and it was interesting but I learned a lot and became more interested in the elections because he was my teacher. He lectures a lot, but he gets off topic frequently. Also he forgets about quizzes most of the time so that is a plus. I highly recommend Doug.
PCC is blessed to have someone like Doug! I will definitely take another class with him. I'm not exaggerating when I say that he made the class laugh every single class. He tries to make hard topics easy to understand. no homework except for like 3 assignments which were easy! If you take good notes and listen, you'll do well in the class!
This teacher is amazing! He is very engaging and easy to learn from. You don't have to show up to class, but it will definitely hurt your grade. Just show up to class, pay attention, and your test is basically just to tell a small story about what you have learned about the government sprinkled with some information, and he will always help you out
Great professor. He uses a lot of modern day examples with his lectures. There wasn't any homework aside from reading the assigned chapters prior to each class period. Quite honestly you could pass the class without the textbook and just study off of the slides he post on D2L. Quizzes are only 5 questions each. Mid term and final were easy.
The best teacher I've ever had. He is funny, knowledgeable, and caring. My only gripe is that he doesn't really tell you what to study for on tests so you basically need to study for everything.
Doug is pretty much the perfect prof. Super knowledgable, always engaging, and really cares about his students. He's also the funnies teacher I've ever had, hands down. He's easy to talk to and is very even-minded, which is nice great for a class on politics. WOULD TAKE 100 TIMES AGAIN.
Doug is one of the greatest professors I've had. He is very engaging, funny, and caring. He is respectful of students' views, and is always willing to help if you are struggling. He is very knowledgeable about political science, and his lectures left me all the more interested in the subject. No matter how much you know about PS, his class the best
This is my second time having Professor Doug for political science. By far the best teacher I've ever had at PCC. He makes his lectures engaging so they're not boring. He only grades quizzes, exams, and essays. No homework other than reading. Great overall.
Doug is probably my favourite professor at PCC. He makes his lectures interesting, and is willing to help you out. I would definitely take him again.
Doug is seriously the best professor ever! He is so funny and makes the class fun and not boring. His lecture and slides are very straight forward. He does about 4 quizzes in the term, each has only about 4 questions. There are two exams in the class, one being the final and he gives you a study guide for both. You will love his class!
Doug was the best teacher I have ever had. I don't enjoy coming to school but he made class enjoyable. There were a few quizzes worth 5 points, 2 exams, and one presentation. Easy class to get an A. I would definitely take him again! He is absolutely hilarious and easy to listen to. I got through the class with minimal use of the textbook.
He makes class fun and any subject interesting. If you have the option I definitely recommend taking any of his classes.
Professor Byrd was my first experience with a college professor. I could not have asked for a better person to start my college career with. He's a great guy and instructs with passion but also has a few jokes. He definitely takes the edge off when you sit in his class. There is a book for this class but it's only needed as an additional study tool
Doug was easily the funniest best professor I've ever had. I don't even like political science all that much but I took 4 of his classes because he is so great. He is also very helpful if you are struggling and really wants you to succeed. He is hilarious 10/10
Great teacher; really good lectures, he makes them interesting. The midterm and final are short answer and essay questions, but they're not bad if you know the material. You don't have to know a bunch of dates and stuff as long as you can make a valid argument. Grades fairly. I enjoyed this class, and I usually don't like social science classes.
Doug is an amazing professor a true gem who truly wants to see you succeed. But if you want a good grade you do have to work for it. You definitely learn a lot in this class.
Hilarious, but he's not just a clown. He has a clear passion and deep understanding of political science. His class was great composing of only a simple presentation, a thought piece, 2 tests, and 4 quizzes. No comprehensive final involved, and the lowest quiz score dropped. Lecture heavy class, but he makes the best of it regardless.
I loved Doug's class! Usually I find history/political science pretty boring but all of the lectures in this class were interesting and funny. I really enjoyed this term and I would definitely recommend taking one (or more) of Doug's classes!
Doug makes political science something that is fun and easily understandable. He's rarely serious which at times can be a little annoying but he makes the class fun and you walk away surprised that you learned anything. He says readings are mandatory and though they do help, I picked up the book twice and fell asleep immediately. Highly recommend .
He doesn't give any homework besides the usual reading , he gives a timeline of how the whole course will be like so it's no surprise quizzes, tests are fairly simple and easy. He never really mentioned anything about attendance.
lots of lectures but makes them fun with video clips and good sense of humor. not much homework other than reading. four quizzes, a midterm, a final, and a few graded papers. overall easy class
My favorite class of the week. Doug is hilarious and a great lecturer. The quizzes are good and he gives a great study guide before each exam. Would highly suggest taking this class or any class with him.
Doug is a fantastic lecturer.
This was a decent class. The professor was funny and made the topics more interesting. This class is very test heavy, and the tests can be a little difficult. Make sure to read or you won't pass the quizzes.
Doug definitely tries a lot of jokes, and only a few of them land. If you can deal with a decent amount of flat jokes, then you can deal with him. He's genuinely a very nice guy and obviously extremely smart. Class is easy if you show up and really listen. Take good notes. Four quizzes, a midterm, a final, and a speech/essay. Very laid back class.
Doug is THE BEST instructor at PCC
I went into Doug's class without having taken a PS class before and upon the first day, it was clear I had less info than the other students. His lectures were hilarious, engaging, and really helped me learn a lot! Take notes and do the reading. I'll never go another term at PCC without taking one of Doug's classes -- easily my favorite instructor.
I have taken Doug for US Gov, Modern China & Its Neighbors, Global Politics, and even for an internship course. He is an amazing and engaging lecturer. I would travel all the way to Rock Creek just because I knew what I would get out of his course! I strongly recommend him to anyone interested in taking a political science course.
Byrd is such a gem, really cares about his lectures and tells a lot of bad jokes.
Doug is funny and and enjoyable person but often goes off on non-related tangents and strays from the lecture wasting valuable time. His quizzes will be about the most random small facts he mentions maybe once if that, his power points are just sad to be honest, so be ready to teach yourself a lot of the material.
I love Doug! Amazing lectures, such a gem. We are truly blessed to have him as the main polisci instructor at Rock Creek. Hilarious guy who keeps the students engaged during lectures. You can totally get away without buying the textbooks if you go to class and take notes during lecture; most everything for the quizzes and exams are in the slides.
He's supper funny, and he's very inspirational. ask ANYBODY that has taken his class. He has the best jokes, he makes the whole class roar in laughter at least once per class. Best approach on politics as well. He has lectures, quizzes, and tests. No group work (told you he was the best!) and plus, he doesn't mind if you're late! just show up.
I hated politics but after taking Byrd's class, I can't stop talking about them. His lectures are great and engaging, class was remote so no in class attendance. Just two major papers, midterm and final exams, and easy quizzes. Listen to the lectures and read the textbook and you'll get any easy A. He wants students to succeed. Highly recommend!
I highly recommend taking Prof. Byrd's PS-201 class, it was very enjoyable. He has an amazing personality and sense of humor, and truly cares about the needs of each of his students. He does not give very many assignments or quizzes, in my experience only two short papers, and six brief multiple choice quizzes. I highly recommend his class.
Professor Byrd is a great teacher. Very passionate about the topics he lectures on. He also had a dry sense of humor and is a really funny and likable guy. As long as you make the effort for the papers he assigns youll be fine. Hes a pretty easy grader. I loved his class and I hope to take another class with him. Would HIGHLY recommend!!
Honestly, out of all of the professors and teachers I have had in my life, you are hands down THE best professor and teacher I have ever had in my life. David is one of those teachers I'd love to sit on the back porch with, drinking a bear, and just talk about talk about literally anything. David are is a really chill teacher
Honestly one of my favorite teachers he's so chill. I feel like I could talk to him about anything. His class is actually entertaining and love listening to his classes.
Doug is an amazing person to learn from, he really knows the materials he's teaching and cares about both the topics as well as how it's presented. Class was once a week and then he posted podcasts to cover the rest of the content, very good set up. There's a decent amount of reading homework but that's about it and it's not unreasonable at all. :)
Doug class was awesome his podcasts were an excellent tool to cover material. His style was very light and informative. I am looking forward to taking another Political Science now because he was so awesome.
Doug is engaging and personable. He's knowledgeable, his lectures are always interesting and he's funny. His quizzes and papers are easy if you attend class and actually try. His grading system's fair and he tells you how to succeed. He is always available to answer questions; he's very approachable. Everyone loves his classes.
Doug is a great professor who is truly passionate about political science. The classes are composed of entertaining lectures, readings for homework, 6 quizzes, 2 fun papers, and 2 essay-based exams. He teaches about politics in a way that focuses less on political parties, and more on what should be done based on logic. I strongly recommend Doug.
His exams are short essay questions that you have to type really quickly, but he expects you to go into great detail in them, so studying is important.
Douglas really cares about his subject, and it shows. Not the most tech savvy professor, but he has adapted his class well enough. If you have the opportunity to take him in-person next term, he would be my recommendation for a political science class.
Douglas Bryd was the funniest professor I've ever had. He made political science so entertaining with all his side comments. It is lecture heavy plus he had his students listen to some podcasts he created. Although it was a lot of listening there was never a dull moment. The reading is dense and sometimes hard to get through. Not many assignments.
Byrd was a solid teacher. I learned a lot in his class and I think the content he chose was important. He is not accessible out of class and wouldn't accommodate my disability. I didn't feel fully welcomed in his class because of this.
Dr. Byrd is hilarious, his classes were engaging with tons of interaction and no boring moments. He's clearly really into the subject, and his passion helps so much. Most importantly, he cares a lot about his students. He really inspired me, will take again. Dropped the lowest quiz, no mandatory attendance. Awesome.
Took 5 classes with Dr. Byrd from 2016-2018 He is one of those proffs that you remember well after you've moved on. In all my time at PCC he was one of two that I always remember fondly. Single-handedly made me decide to major in Political Science. Hilarious and will work with you to get where you need to go even well after you've taken his class.
Okay, if you have to take Political Science, Sociology, or any related field and Prof. Byrd is teaching it, TAKE HIS CLASS! This dude is honestly the coolest professor I have ever met. Hilarious, inspirational, and extremely knowledgeable. But also modest, and clearly enjoys what he does. I'm limited to 350 characters, otherwise I'd write more.
He is a funny professor who likes to make his lectures entertaining, but all he does is lecture during class. Lot's of reading and it's very difficult to memorize everything by just lectures.
Unremarkable in content, tedious in lectures, and cryptic in the grading process. Not offensively awful, but I wouldn't choose him again willingly. (Real rank would be 2/5 but I submit 1/5 due to the overall positive lean).
I grew so frustrated by his constant attempts to be funny and relatable during class because I felt that a lot of his "jokes" were actually intellectually demeaning and often problematic.
Prof. Byrd is awesome. He's hilarious and keeps things alive- not boring. I had to miss a quiz due to stuff and he was super accommodating to me. He's respectful of students and wants you to do well. I know he does all kinds of stuff like teaching in Japan- he's great. Fueled my passion for politics.
I enjoyed this professor. While his slides might be boring because they are white with minimal photos he makes up for it with being funny. Reading the text book is encouraged and assigned but basically optional. There is two essays/projects and 8 quizzes/tests. Really nice, funny, and welcoming. I liked the amendment proposal project.
My 3rd class with Byrd. He's fun, energetic and his grading expectations are very, very clear. No pop quizzes and instructions were very simple. Gives a very good exam review before the exam so that we know 100% what is going to be on the exam. Very chill Prof with a real passion for politics.
He think's he's funny when he's not. Humor is subjective, I get it, however he gets off topic to make jokes way too much it's hard to keep track on what is going on in class. Quiz dates are not listed in the syllabus. His lectures are just reading bullet points off of his plain black and white slides, which makes everything boring and unengaging.
The hype is real. Though lecture-heavy, it is so fun to attend his class. He always makes skits, analogies, and jokes to teach the content. He loves to talk about presidential affairs and scandals. He also comes off as very politically moderate and gives inspirational talks like TED talks. His study guides for the exams are TOP TIER.
He is so respectful of EVERYBODY. Politics are so charged nowadays but Doug is WONDERFUL at making sure all sides are heard, understood, and respected. Sure, there is a LOT of material, lecture, and reading, but the test prep is very good and the exams, despite looking scary ahead of time, aren't that bad. ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!
Great professor! There are quizzes with 5 questions each every other week with a midterm 4 questions and 2 essays as well as a final with the same thing. No extra credit, grade is based on quizzes, attendance, final and midterm, Super nice professor with great humour, quizzes and exams are tricky.
Doug is amazing. I took 4 of his classes. Highly recommend.
The best professor I've come across by far. Absolutely hilarious, super personal and caring, and such an inspiration.
3 classes w/ him. Doug's a really amazing prof who knows when to be serious and funny. Let's you come to your own views of things, has good class reviews for tests, and lots of freedom for writing papers. A prof who makes an interesting subject even more fun to approach. I would take him even if I didn't need the credit! If u need cred take him!!!!
I LOVED taking Doug's classes. He was so incredibly funny and really cares about his students and notices the small details. His slides in class were very simple and didn't have much on them as he talked from the heart for his lectures. He was a really easy going teacher and graded everything super fairly. You won't regret his class!
I overslept and missed an entire class but he still gave me full points for participation. Great guy, he's nice and is really easy to talk to. His entire class is him talking the entire time, pretty easy to pass as long as you take notes and know the material.
One of the funniest dudes ever. Has a very clear grading system and not a big workload. Class is fairly easy to pass as long as you pay attention. Overall would recommend 100%
Course has 3.5 "big" papers and 6 mini quizzes. Quizzes are usually every other week. Participation/attendance is graded. the midterm and final papers contribute to 50% of your grade so be prepared to study for those. Doug throws in a lot of jokes into his lectures and he never reads off of the slides so hes clearly knowledgeable
8 quizzes, 1 miderm and final(include timed essays) super easy tho. 2 assignments- mostly textbook reading. As long as u show up to class you will be good. i barely touched the book. quizzes are 5 Q's, and only based on thinks talked about in class. super funny guy and im def taking another one of his courses. super understanding, recommend.
Very fun and engaging class, it did feel a bit scattered, as he frequently goes off on tangents, and he also designed the class in a way that it switches between three different countries, however the quizzes are usually pretty easy, and the papers are on what was most recently covered, so overall the class is quite good.
I just wrapped up my final exam and last class, and I must say that this instructor is fantastic! Each lecture was entertaining and engaging, making the material easy to grasp. There was no homework, just 8 quizzes, 2 papers, and a midterm and final exam. It's been a fun and “easy” class, and I've managed to secure a B+ without reading the book!
I took Peace & Conflict. It was a lot of Hx info to take in, but thoroughly covered 4 countries major conflicts. 3 books, 2 lectures/wk, 2 documentary movies, 3 thorough tests/papers. This professor is fair, understanding, willing to work with you. Passionate, good sense of humor. I will take him again. (strong writing skills necessary)
Doug is a great professor! I took PS211 and 242 with him and I loved both classes! You can tell that he is incredibly passionate about the subject and he does a fantastic job of not letting any personal biases slip through. He is super understanding and accommodating; never hesitate to reach out if you are struggling with the material or a deadline
Genuinely a good dude. His lectures are humorous, but also informative. You'll learn a lot of interesting history related fun-facts on the side. Very direct about information that will be covered on tests and quizzes. I like how he expresses his own thoughts and opinions on some matters, and encourages students to as well.
Byrd gets good reviews because he's funny and likable as a person. As a professor, his class isn't structured well for students like me. Slides are useless w/o his lectures. Attend them! There are 3 total papers (final is 25%), a midterm exam (20%), and quizzes; all high stake. Quizzes are every ~2-3 weeks; warned of 2 days before, like pop quiz.
Attendence wasn't mandatory, but I highly recommend attending lectures; they're informative and entertaining. Very light workload/quizzes.
Outstanding lectures that are very engaging. Learned a lot about different political science theories and how they apply to real-world events.
