lectures on tape, tests only on lecture material, MC tests
No Comments
Gives all the lectures on tape so if you go over them you'll do great. Doesn't have a real text book. The class is not mathematical. I found him to be very easy.
He is so, so cool. I loved his class. Just make sure to review all the tapes...it's not hard to get an "A."
This Professor is the man. He is extremely redundant which makes the material very easy to study. He offers lecture tapes, so you don't have to go to class and his tests are pretty straight forward.
this teacher is nice and corny
he always talk to the tape recorder, but as long as you listen to his tape and requir reading, his exam's question is very easy
Awsome professor! He knows what he is talking about. His questions come straight from the reading material and lectures. He sells lecture tapes of the lectures and the 4 exams are multiple choice.
He uses his classes as a platform for his political propaganda. When you sit in his class, you feel brainwashed, especially if you want to learn the material. Although he is easy, he is extremely biased. If you don't want to feel used and indoctrinated, do NOT take his classes.
Worst teacher ever. Sells his tapes to the students if they dont want to come to class. He is unlcear, boring, and unfair grader.

As long as you buy his tapes and listen to them on your way to school or work, you'll be fine. A very good businessman and making very good business selling his tapes to students.
His lectures are confusing and disorganized, and his exams have the most unrelated questions ever. Lectures are posted online as audio files, but his exams.. forget about those.
Wow, this is a tough class, All the lectures are posted on his website, so you dont have to go to class... He is boring as all hell, cracking 3 jokes during the semester, but I guess he's the best for this class. Wierd grading sceme, still passed after bombing all the exams.
In my class, no one got an A and 3 people got a B. The rest either got C and D's or failed. At first, he's easy, but then his test's get harder. All he does is go over mindless stuff. He tells the secret to being a millionaire by the stockmarket, but if it works like that, why isn't he one?bad class
Honestly the only way to pass this class is by going to class. He has cassettes you can purchase that hav his lecture in them but they are not as helpful as actually goin to class. if you wanna pass this one you hav to go to class or at least know wat portion on the book to highlight.
Good Professor!
He doesn't follow a set curriculum. His lectures are disorganized, long, and broad. You can pass the class with just coming to class alone. But, if you want higher than a D, you have to listen to his lectures he has posted on-line. You have go listen to lectures because he makes you comatose during class. (Don't expect higher than a B though!)
Easy class if you know everything about excel, however his classes were boring and slow.
His lectures are pretty boring but can be interesting sometimes; his exams very often-times have little to do with economics and are off topic (but are very easy if you study), but even then it's still pretty hard to get above a C
This teacher is boring and not hrelpfull at all...but easy....as long as you know Excell your good to go.....easy A..if not B...
Interesting. Lectures vary from boring to fun. I like how he doesn't follow a book, but uses real life and current events. Just takes notes--a lot. Tapes could help. Exams are easy, but sometimes he throws retarded questions.
Overall, a very boring but fairly easy class. His lectures are very disorganized and mind-numbingly boring (unless the ocassional dating ad pops up during his lectures). But if you come to class every day and take really good notes, you should be able to pull off a B or at least a C with no problem.
Topics were relevant to today's economy. Lectures were interesting, and tests were based on notes and lectures. If you have any understading of basic economic principles, you should ace his class.
BUSH GROUPIE...HE TALKS ABOUT CAPITALISM ALL DAY. I DONT THINK I LEARNED ANYTHING RELATED TO ECONOMICS EXCEPT MAYBE FOR THE CPI
He is a tough guy! He talks capitalism everyday and I don't think there is relationship to Microeconomic!!! It is like we have social class! And his document on the blackboard is massy! We don't know what will be on next class. It seems that there is not organization about his class.and it is hard to reveiw exam.
very easy class, as long as you take good notes you pass, lets you bring 5 pages of hand written notes to the exams
Not a hard class at all, especially if you take it during the summer. Very accesible. We spent about 2 weeks of the U.S. Constitution & the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank. I felt we spent more time on the foundations than on Macro Economics today. "How Capitalism Changed America" is pretty boring too. Boring class but easy professor.
Stay away from this professor. This is coming from someone who has an A in his class so far. His test are easy but his lectures are long and boring. The only way i can focus on his lectures is if i have a large cup of black coffee. He's completely unorganized and pretty much sucks.
I have to say after just finishing the final and getting grades back that this prof is the most unorganized mess ever. Even though I ended up with a decent grade and was able to use notes in class interpreting him is the hardest part. My econ class might as well been called "Intro to trying to understand chicken scratch notes"
One word: HELL!! & he`s the devil! Yea you can bring notes to the exams but good luck trying to pass with them...he puts the most random questions on his exams....he had the nerve to say rutgers-newark students are poorer than those who attend the new bruinswick campus...lol wtf is that about??
i ended up with an A in microeconomics and as long as you review the lectures that he has posted on his website and study the lectures and the materials he provides you shouldnt have a problem getting an A. but he is very unorganized and does ask questions that are totally irrelevant to economics so you have to pay attention to every little detail.
Seminar in Economics with him was the most frustrating class I've taken at Rutgers. No one knew what he wanted us to learn and his tests were totally unprofessional. I mean they were written in pencil..wtf? And they were really hard. Please take this class with Prof. Loeb if you can so that you can actually learn something.
you dont have to go to class he puts his lectures on line. also he dosent use the books so dont buy it. his tets are easy excpet for the graphs.
The class was pretty easy. If you force yourself to atcually go to class you absorb more of the information instead of sitting on your bed and listening to it. Most of his examples are completely moronic (i.e Using hotdogs to explain utility). BUT pay attention, write good notes and copy his lecture notes he pts on blackboard and you will get an A
You don't have to go to class, his lectures are online, his tests contain everything on his lectures (with very few exceptions) and you gain some valuable knowledge on the theory of macroeconomics. I really don't see what the fuss is about.
his lectures are boring as hell, he skips around and asks the most random questions on his exams. He needs a personality.
I had him for Intro to Macro he recommends to not go to class and he dose not use a book, its a lecture class. His tests are hard because hell give you questions that aren't about macro. So you have to have a lot of notes from the lecture.
well first of all, the format of his class is amazing. no quizzes, attendance or homeworks, just three tests. you can re-take or make up one of the three at the end of the semester for 15 bucks. his lectures aren't very organized. and sometimes its hard to keep track. tests are pretty difficult.
ProfessorCoate's class is not so much about macro, more like a political science/history class. It's a lot of information to digest, but much of it is not very useful. His test is bascially a test of senseless details, you have to remember exactly everthing he said. Last of all, he teaches a lot of his personal opinions.
took him for both micro and macro, good professor, easy and interesting. all the lectures are online so u dont have to go to class, but interest in the subject is a plus!
boring, irrelevant lectures. gives questions that has nothing to do with econ in the test. If you copy all he says in the notes you bring to the class, you will get an a. but if you don't you wont get anything
you do not have to go to class. he puts his lectures online. his tests are stupid. he asks alot of random questions that do not even pertain to micro.
Easy professor if you take good notes and listen to all the lectures.
For a class where you can use your notes, his exams are extremely hard. You really have to listen to his lectures (which he posts on blackboard). It's hard to listen to his voice and write down what he says. if you have too many notes you don't have enough time during exam, if you don't have enough you probably missed out something you needed
Had him for Intro to Econ-Macro. He's very very boring (I slept in class on several occassions). Seems to charge students for extra learining materials which is pretty horrible. Interesting class but his exams have absolutley nothing to do with the class in general (includes unrelated questions). I definitely wouldn't take him again.
IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!1
Stay away from this teacher. Most of what he taught us had nothing to do with the present and everything he said was his opinion. On the test he even had a question, "what was my opinion on the topic" no attendance or homework is awesome but it is very very hard to get A's in his class unless you have a strong background in Economics's ps- he suck
This was more of U.S History class. Coate definitley put his opinions above any others (very biased man). You do not have to go to class because he posts his lectures as MP3 files on Blackboard. He also allows you to use your notes on the tests (very helpful). One of the more weird professors at Rutgers, but worth taking for a high grade.
Take good notes, show up to class, look like you're interested. Pretty unorganized, indecisive and quirky professor. Typical Econ. professor! lol. Bombed all exams and still manged to pass. Just make sure you take good notes.
Professor Coate is a great teacher.. anyone that says otherwise is a dumbass that needs to go back to high school. True, you dont need to go to class, but you should and pay attention and you'll get an A. Can't be easier than that. Holla wun love. RONAKK <3
I absolutely LOVED this class. I don't really understand why other students aren't too fond of him, but it really isn't that bad at all. Your allowed to bring all the notes you want in during exams, so make sure your notes are thorough!!!! Granted he may be indecisive at times or a little weird, but he's still a good professor. Definitely take him!
Take his class. No attendance, you just have to listen to his lectures online and explains everything very clear that you don't have to be in class because you won't have any questions. ****WRITE DOWN EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF HIS MOUTH, HE ASKS EXTREMELY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS LECTURES.****
Nice guy but what a dry and bias lecturer. Not satisfied with the grades and tests. 21 people got Cs, 6 received As and a few Bs. Also 2 people failed in my class. The thing is he lets you bring notes to the test which is awesome but its impossible to use them for every answer. His test questions ranged from easy to difficult. Good luck!
Really learned a lot about the current world from him. Test is fairly hard. His grading structure is a pain in the A$$.
I don't understand why everyone thinks he is so horrible! People, just attend class (your paying for it anyway) and take good notes (like you should be) and you'll be fine. He let's you bring all the notes you have and he records his lectures just in case you miss his class (since attendance isn't mandatory). Just be sure your thorough w/your notes
Easiest class ever. Dont have to go to class just listen to his lectures and take solid notes. Exams are open notes about the lectures. If you take good notes youll notice that you dont even need them to answer the exams you just remember them. He does ask very specific questions but I never had a problem easiest class i had all semester.
Easiest teacher and quite funny. he posts his lctures online which makes it easier to hear and write notes. Tests are simple and you can bring notes. Best professor Ive ever had.
Class is ok. No attendance, lectures posted online. Write down everything he says, as he asks specific, random questions and you can use notes for tests. More of a history class than econ. He explains the facts about how they are, and then how he thinks everything should be. Hates on Obama alot. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS!!!!
TAKE SUPERB NOTES FROM HIS CLASS/ONLINE LECTURES AND YOU'LL BE FINE. Don't have to attend class, but it helps to listen to his online lectures and then go to class to review for more understanding. He's an OK teacher.
Learned a lot about current economic recession. It is an easy class if you take super good notes because his exams are very specific.I found it much easier to understand the material if i went to class than just online lectures. Especially when it came to calculating stuff with equations. The best part is that he lets you use your handwritten notes!
i took intro macro and econ seminar with coate. awesomely easy. don't even have to go to class--just listen to the lectures and take good notes! you're allowed to use them for the exams. you WILL fail if you don't take notes.
you dont have to go to his class he posted podcast on bb and you can also bring all the notes from lecture in exam hes really good professor learned alot!
Worst than bad. Do not even consider this, you will learn NOTHING. This dude makes his$$ by spreading his capitalizm poison instead of teaching. He does not know much from what I hear. I got A but learned -0-. Waste of $ & time. He must be fired for non competency. Do not take this class with this guy, you'll be sorry!!
He posted all his lectures on BB,listen to EVERY single one, and take a lot of notes for EVERY SINGLE ONE. each exam is from 8 lectures, you can bring notes to exams. Don't remember anything i learned from that class.
Coate is the man, I dont care what anybody says. All you have to do is take good notes. Most of the time, his lectures are informative and interesting.
worst professor you can find in rutgers! do not take his class, he is stupid and always pretending know things he has no idea about it
Professor Coate has taught me more than anyone else. The best teacher I ever had.
same comment as others + peculiar grading system. I know I bombed the exams but still ended up with a C. You need very detailed notes for this class. Talked a lot about global warming.
Professor Coate is very insightful and I actually enjoyed his class... the days I was there. He tells you the first day that it's better to just listen to his lectures online and take GOOD notes. Open notebook exams ! Good reading choices too. Highly reccommend him :D
Gives you the convenience of listening to his lectures online and at your own time. Tests are open notes and one paper to boost your grade. Willing to help and is funny sometimes. EASY to get a good grade.
This is not a course about macro economics. You will not learn almost anything about macro economics nor will you use economist terms. All you will learn and hear about is Capitalism= prosperity and Socialism=death and misery. this is of course not true. All the evidence he uses to prove that statement is false and has logic errors.
really intelligent guy, knows what he is talking abt, but an awful teacher, he might be a brilliant economist but he is a terrible teacher
Okay here's exactly what you need to know for intro to econ-macro: attendence is not mandatory. he actually tells you not to come. his lectures are up online. for each exam (there is three)there is a little reading. for the first one, it's a novel (its actually not that hard to get into). his tests are not so much to learn macro material, (cont...)
(...cont) he basically tests you on quotes and NUMBERS! make sure you write down every number you find. its not fair but thats the key to his class if you have to take it. the exams are open notebook and they are curved. he is also very opinionated. as long as you keep up with the lectures, read the readings, and take good notes you'll do fine
Prof. Coate is terrible. Like everyone said he has lectures online you can listen to them, but is very hard to understand. In class you have to write down everything he says, and most students don't. Your grade is solely on 3 tests, and his tests are extremely hard. So if you want a better grade than a C, do not take his class!!
Prof Coate is one of the best economic professor on campus. He knows his work and has been teaching on this campus for many years. If you really want to know about the economy and come out 1000x better than when you came in this is the guy.
Definitely the best Macro Econ professor. Attendance NOT mandatory! You can listen to his lectures on your own time online. Take great notes because you can use your notes on his exams! He has great book selections. He's biased but you learn a lot in the class. Not hard to get an A. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! =D
Make sure to take good notes.... examz are open notes and non-economics material...yeah his Quest are bizarre bt from the notes.. make sure to put down the statical data.!! And yeah he posts his lectures online.
BEST TEACHER EVER.
Attendance is not mandatory..and lets you listen to lectures online. Just take excellent notes..make sure to write down numbers, years, math problems, and quotes he says..if you do all that you will recieve an A. Theres not enough time for the exams..but the exam grades are curved. He is an excellent teacher..learned alot about the economy.
One of the best professors I had this semester. Take good notes and you are guaranteed an A. Prof. Coate knows what he's talking about. I learned a lot about economics! I loved listening to all his lectures, he makes economics fun through his humor.
his exams are not on economics material. The class is NOT based on learning but instead taking ridiculous amounts of notes on his opinion. Even if you are a good note taker he will ask questions about dates and stats so write everything. I do not mind working hard but working hard in this class does not equate learning.
He is so easy. Records all lectures and puts them online. I took him for Econ Seminar and the first day of class said you don't have to come. The exams are all open notes, you do have to take a ton of notes but if you do a little bit everyday its not overwhelming.
The best professor I ever heard. Brilliant.
NO teacher should use the classroom as a political platform. I don't care what you think, just don't shove it down my throat. His lectures are online, which is great, but you should definitely go to class anyway.Had him for micro and macro, and all he did was talk about global warming. I feel like I didn't learn much. Lectures put you to sleep.
Coate rules. His exams are a little hard, but he curves. attendance is not mandatory since he records his class and the exams are on everything he says in class, nothing more. I would recommend him.
He tapes his lectures, and his transcribed notes are mostly illegible. He tests you on alot of non-economic stuff. Unless you have a perfect attendance record where you can catch everything he said, like what he had for breakfast on this day or that day, don't take it.
Attendance isn't mandatory which is awesome. He records and puts his lectures online. 3 exams that each consist of 8 lectures and a novel which he doesn't cover in class. It's an easy class if you're a good note taker, LOTS OF QUESTIONS ON NUMBERS! I didn't do so well lol. All you will basically learn is why housing prices went down.
records all his lectures. so you don't have to go to class. about 8 lectures and a novel per exam. total of 3 exams including final. but not cumulative. very boring lectures though. don't procrastinate in the lectures. you can bring notes to the exams. so just take really good notes!
Class isn't mandatory. He records all his lectures. About 8 lectures for each exam plus a novel you read on your own time. Allowed to bring any hand-written notes to the exam.Sounds easy, but tests are very difficult. You can know economics and still do bad in his class. He's the kind of professor that tests you on irrelevant stuff such as numbers
Class isn't mandatory. He records all of his lectures online. Make sure you read the books he assigns...they are on the test! There are 3 tests and for each you are allowed to bring in hand written notes. You must take notes on practically EVERYTHING he says. I never went to class but listened to all his lectures and got a B+
Seriously guys?! This guy is awesome! He records all his lectures online and lets you use the notes on exams, his book selections are so interesting. Like this is college everyone, how much spoon feeding do you want him to do? His topics are so interesting! I wish he taught Micro too.
Took him for intro-macro. Lectures posted on his website and is usually very clear. Every number statistic he mentions in his lectures (like NJ tax rate: x%) will most likely be on test. Read the three books he assigns, 10ish questions on test are from books. Take good notes from movies/videos he assigns! Course is solely based of of three tests.
enjoyed his class a lot. learned about the economy and politics. one downside is that you have to write every single thing he says.
This man is the best. Attendance is not mandatory. I just listened to all his lectures the weekend before each exam and wrote EVERY SINGLE THING he said. As long as you take good notes and remember general details about the novel he assigned for the exam, you'll be golden. I got an A doing that.
Idk how he's not rated higher. Attendance not mandatory, posts ENTIRE lectures online, class topics are current & interesting. If you do poorly in this class it's because you don't care. Just pay attention and take good notes and you will get an A.
GREAT TEACHER! posts all lectures online, so attendance is not mandatory.. you should still go though.. hes very helpful, funny, and overall a good professor. i definitely suggest him!!
Attendance not Mandatory. Posts all lectures online. Very unorganized. Keeps sending lot of emails. Assigned seats during testing. Open Notes Exams. Write each and every word he says.
WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING! You have no idea what is going to be on the exam so write down everything. The only BAD THING is that you are not graded fairly. If there is 12-15 students only 2 students gets A's 3 get B's the rest C's. Department rules not his, he say. You compete against each other even if you have passing grades each time. SUCKS!
MacroEcon, good professor. I learned more from the readings though... his lectures are kind of random after a while... took it over the winter. Every test had a curve.
attendance is not Mandatory and he posts lectue online for you to listen. make sure you write down every single number he says because they might be on the exams. just take good notes and read the books, you will be fine for the exams.
Great professor. A must take if you want to learn how the economy works.
Very good and easy professor. Good lecturer. Attendance not mandatory, open note test so make sure you take diligent notes. Three books are assigned and wants to be read outside of class (therefore he doesn't discuss them in class). You don't have to read them bc he does curve the exam, but if you the max score possible then read them.
Wish all profs were like him! All lectures posted online, its like he doesnt want you going to class. Pretty easy to do well as long as you TAKE NOTES on every single thing. His lectures could be boring but still very important so just take notes!
he is a good proffesor if you lisen to him carefully. YOU MUST READ THE 3 bOOKS HE ASSIGNS! Do not go to class! waste of time just listen to lectures carefully and take very good notes
You receive 3 exams (2 midterms/1 final) that determine your final grade. This is a lecture hall type classroom setting. He records all his lectures and uploads them online. You have to read 3 novels throughout the semester that tie into the exams. (1 book per exam)
#1 Economics in general is not an easy subject. It requires alot of patience and focus in order to really understand it. Coate's class is not an easy A. If you think you can get away with not reading the books he assigns and skipping class you got it all wrong. In order to do well in his class RE- listen, I repeat RE-Listen to his lectures!it helps
Coate posts lectures online so you dont have to go to class. you must however listen to the lectures and write down EVERYTHING he says. some of the questions on the exams dont have to do with economics. he asks very specific questions. exams are all open notes but they still are not easy by any means. with that being said, take him if you can.
Easy A. Just listen to his online recordings multiple times and you can get an A
No assignments, mostly doing the readings. Attend his lectures or listen to his online recording but TAKE NOTES! many of the notes from lectures are on his exams along with questions from the readings. Great guy! I would really recommend him. Pay attention and you'll get an easy A
In his lectures you have to write EVERYTHING he says. If he says he ate ice cream in the morning, write it down because it'll be in the exam. If you just take a lot of notes, the class would be easy because you can use them during the exam.
OK, ill break this down for your, 4 test non of which cumulative. 1. read two books 2. take very GOOD notes... im talking word for word on what he says 3. There will be a curve, a 71 was an A in my class.
The class itself isn't hard because he doesn't give any homework assignments except for reading two books. But when people are telling you that you have to write notes, its because you HAVE TO WRITE NOTES. Like at least 5 pages of notes per lecture. Every single word, every single detail and then maybe you'll get an A.
Worst Prof ever!!!! He does not have power point. Just talk all class long and ask you take notes, which gonna take so much time. Not gonna take his classes again!!!! ask you to read two books and will take so much of your time as well. if you want a good grade, then you gonna spend at least more than 15 hours per week, only to take the notes!!
He is an okay teacher, unlike what students say, he posts his lectures online so it's like an online course, his test are a little tough If you take good notes you'll get an A because he curves big time
DON'T EVER THINK ABOUT TAKING A CLASS WITH THIS PERSON!!!!! His tests are extremely hard. You're gonna have to read 2 books and only be tested on the even-numbered pages! He posts all lectures on-line and he doesn't even want students to go to class. You're only allowed to make-up one exam and YOU HAVE TO PAY $20 FEE!! However, he curves A LOT!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will have to read two books, and take notes for exams. He will Grade you on even pages only and the notes from lecture are just overwhelming. His lectures are boring. I would not recommended this to any one.
Posts everything online. Attendance are not mandatory. Tests are tough and need to take very good notes if you want an A but gives a good curve no complains. Good professor and lectures are good and to the point.
Class is interesting learnt allot, take good notes exams are open note
Do not take. Teaches with an extremely narrow conservative worldview. His tests are ultra specific and you need to take extremely good notes in order to pass. Not very helpful at all. You have to read in order to pass. The only positive was that attendance is not mandatory and he records and posts every lecture only.
Gives 4 tests all of which are open notes. The questions are specific and the wording can be confusing, but if you take good notes you should be fine. He also records and posts all his lectures online so attendence is not necessecary. Also gives a nice curve on all the exams so an A is deffinately doable.
Easiest Professor I have taken so far. Honestly all you have to do is take the notes word for word, he uploads the lecture online. You don't have to go to class or study. If you take word for word notes (which only takes 20 minutes) you will get an A in the class.
Great professor. His lectures were sometimes long, however, if you listen or at least take basic notes, you will be able to pass the tests. I took his summer course; he posted lecture notes and recordings online. Was an informative and fast class to get through. Would take again.
Coate puts up his lectures online so that you do not have to go to class--he tells you not to be there. Two books to read, four exams. Exams are tough because he pulls out specific details from exams, BUT you are allowed to use notes. He even asks "on page x what happened?" Take good notes from the beginning and you will get an A.
Amazing Professor. Im sad I'm not a economy major to take more classes with him.. Very interesting to listen to. Posts Lectures online majority of the classes doesn't show up. Open Note Exams.
Horrible lectures gets off topic from actual course material and makes own tests would not reccomend
Thought I was doing poorly in the class since he puts the exam grades on an Excel spreadsheet and sends it out to the class. Emailed him multiple times but did not get a response until nearly a week later. Dropped the class to find out later that I was doing really well because he completely messed up my grades. Then I was re-enrolled. HORRIBLE.
He is a nice professor. With this class is you have to read a lot and I mean a LOT. Two textbooks, and PowerPoint plus videos and everything go on the exams. You do not have to go to class because it is completely online; the only problem I found was that all lectures are disorganized, you have to find out which one belong what he is discussing.
ONLY TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU'RE WILLING TO PUT IN THE WORK. I see so many people complain about how hard the class is but it isn't if you do all the notes. YOU LITERALLY DON'T HAVE TO KNOW ANYTHING/STUDY, JUST WRITE AMAZING NOTES. Pay attention to little details & read the book and you'll do well with the curve.
Here's the deal- you don't show up to any classes, he literally tells you not to go. Four exams, all equally weighed. The exams are from his online lectures and are also open note. However- SUPER specific test questions. When taking notes, focus on numbers and be super clear and organized. If you do alright you should come out with a B.
The questions he puts on his exams are questions you don't plan on studying. He wants you to literally know everything that is written in his readings. He fails half the class after each exams. The only way to pass his class is if you literally memorize everything word for word. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
HORRIBLE. AVOID IF YOU CAN. EXAM QUESTIONS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WHATS ASSIGNED 70% OF THE TIME. NOT EASY...
This class is a pain in the ass. You never need to show up to class since he posts his lectures online, but he tests you on EVERY DETAIL from his lectures. If you don't take amazing notes, you're screwed. But he never really talks about macro in his class, instead rambling about how global warming is a hoax. If you want to learn don't take him.
His lectures are all posted online and as so boring. He knows what he's taking about, but his voice puts you to sleep and he talks so slow. Doing his lectures were like torture. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU'RE A METICULOUS NOTE TAKER AND VERY DISCIPLINED!!!
Tells u not to come to class, posts lectures online w/transripts, all exam are open notes BUT they must be handwritten. I downloaded the transcripts and fixed them as I listened as they dont pick up every word. Then I'd print them and whenever I had free time I would write them on notebook paper. Also READ the books. Curve is GREAT a 45 is a C so
Didn't learn any Economics. Talks a lot about his own opinions. No one goes to class b/c he posts audio recordings. Open handwritten notes exams. VERY boring voice. Don't let the recordings pile up. Read the novels. Very specific questions on MC exams. Pay attn to numbers. All that can be heard during exams is massive flipping of papers.
Terrible professor, literally tells you on the first day that you do not need to go to class. Serious curve bc the grades are that bad. I got a 63 the first exam and it ended up being a b+. He records himself speaking and posts terrible transcripts online. The test itself is very unorganized and its multiple choice. Says its 60 questions but is 70+
Worst professor I've had in 6 years as undergrad, 4 different schools. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! Material presented in disorganized manner, no use of learning mgmt system, ineffective and uninteresting teaching method, content lacks quality and depth, lectures on his personal opinions and unrelated to subject matter, exams w/ irrelevant questions.
The lectures are VERY long(the lecture set can span from 40 mins to about 3 hours). The good thing is it is an open notes class so if you read the book and take very good notes in the lecture you shouldn't get an A. There is a very high curve in the class. Attendance is not mandatory bc all the lectures are online. I dont recommend taking this prof
THE ONLY REASON I GOT AN A IS BECAUSE I KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN I SIGNED UP! Lectures are boring, unorganized, and long, but recorded and online (aka you do not need to come to class). Exams are meticulous & the questions will be random, but it is open notes and there's a hefty curve. Only take if you are willing to listen and put in work at home.
Coates class is a pain. You never have to go to class, but he tests you on specific questions and you can use notes. Dont bother signing up if your not willing to put in work, so many ppl complain about him, but theyre too lazy to take notes and put in effort. If you take good notes and atleast try to do work, youll be ok and he curves too
I'll never understand why RU has prof like these. Coats's class is super easy make sure you take notes because you'll be tested on specific things. He curves a lot and if you fail this class then you're doing something wrong. He is a terrible prof. he doesnt care about his students, his ethical stance is morally incorrect and it is draining.
Not sure why everyone complains. Take good notes and you will pass the open notes exams. Also doesnt push the liberal agenda on students like most other professors. Would take again
He is an easy professor and you don't even have to work hard for this class. There are four tests and he allows you to use the notes you take, which makes it a lot easier. He uploads all the audio online so just stay home listen to the audio and take notes. You don't need to go to class. You also have to read a book which isn't that bad. Just liste
coming to class isn't mandatory, literally 5-7 out of 80+ were in class. Lectures are really all over the place, needs to be more organized. You'll be given 4 exams, with 6-7 lectures questions and book questions as well with it. to really pass this class you have to put everything aside and focus mainly on this class. I wish you all the best.
Its not that hard to pass this class. He only takes 4 Tests and exams are open notes. If you take good notes youll do good on his tests because his tests are very specific. Good luck!
Some of his lectures were boring and repetitive some of them were very interesting and thought provoking. Theres 4 open notes exams all equally weighted thats it. He records lectures and posts them online meaning you dont have to go to class. Exam questions come from lectures and the book. Book wasnt a textbook it was a great non-fiction.
If you take him get ready to listen and write because he post all lectures online and you have to listen and take notes. All the exams are open notes but he ask really specific questions. If you take science or any hard courses dont take him because you have write a lot. Each lectures has 9 pages transcript. He doesnt tech economics random topic
Only take this man if you take great notes, for macro he told the class that attendance is unmadatory and he posts his lecture audio online. Do not be fooled though his tests are hardcore and he allows open notes on the tests but the questions are so specific. 4 tests 25% each he collects your notes and gives you a decent curve if you took godnotes
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR... If you are a hardworking student like me, he will make you feel like you aren't. On the exams you can use your notes. You would think that you would pass the class. You are wrong there! His lectures are all over the place, and 2-3 lectures were about Global Warming. What does that have to do with economics?
He does not make attendance mandatory and he posts all his lectures online. However, his lectures jump from topic to topic and the disorganization makes the lectures difficult to listen to. Also prepare to hear him ramble on about a bunch of Republican propaganda.
The course name is "Development of the American Economy", however, it has nothing to do with that. The coursework is unorganized and has no progression. You don't learn anything of use. The content is random like "the economics of bee keeping" or 7, hour long, lectures on the history of WWII. Exams are so specific, it's probably not in your notes.
I have no idea why Rutgers has a professor like this. This class has nothing to do with economics. You have 4 tests which are open notebook but he manages to find questions that are no where in your notes. Avoid at all costs
Coate tests obscure knowledge that isn't very related to economics. If you put the time into the class, you may learn some interesting things, but not much of it is practical economics. For students that take tedious notes, this is not a difficult class, but if you aren't ready to be independent then you shouldn't take this class.
This professor is horrible, but his class is easy if you take good notes. He doesnt really teach anything regarding economics. He rants a lot about climate change and unnecessary stuff. His exams are on the words he speaks during lectures, usually the minuscule things. I wouldnt take if you want to learn, but easy A or B, go ahead.
I learned more from YouTube videos about Economics than learn from this professor. I advise for no one to take him, you will not learn anything. As he speaks itll be on the test including those books itll be a easy pass , and all he says is just republican propaganda. But if youre hear to learn go find another professor unless you want a easy A.
Prof Coate is not that bad compared to other professors. The only thing you are graded on are 4 exams, which are crazy. On that note, be prepared to READ!!!! And take really good notes ( mostly stats/ numbers). If you plan out a reading schedule and dont fall behind this class is a breeze. Easy A or B depending on your notes. CRAZY curves.
PLEASE LISTEN TO ME! I am a very hard-working student. His class is pointless, DO NOT BE FOOLED BY NO ATTENDANCE AND OPEN NOTES. I write almost everything he says and I still struggled. In one lecture he will ramble on about a subject and in the next he will contradict himself. He talks on and on but the problem is he is never specific ab topics.
there are 4 exams, that's it. the exams are on the lectures and you have to read 2 books throughout the semester. tests are VERY detailed. take good notes in class and good notes on book. honestly, i would take him again because you never had to worry about his class until exam day. if u are on top of things you will do fine. very big curves.
u either love or hate him. i loved his class. honestly u really dont need a brain to pass this class all u have to do is take good notes. yes, his exams are very detailed but his class only consist of 4 exams. once u get the hang of his class u will be fine. u never have to worry about his class if u stay on top of things. 70 above is A. big curves
Worst class I have ever taken. Because it was online, we just had to listen to him talk, then either pay to MAIL him our notes or physically drop them off at his house - so creepy. I learned absolutely nothing, he doesn't even talk about economics, just complains about politics and the environment. Terrible professor, should not be teaching.
He's a good teacher, but his lectures are sometimes hard to understand. But he's always accessible outside of class, he tells you when tests will be beforehand and gives you all the reading material you'll need. As long as you pay attention in class and read what he tells you, you should pass.
Professor Coate explains what you need to do in order to pass this class. His lectures aren't boring to me because I'm actually minoring in econ so I want to learn all of this. There is mandatory reading and note taking but he gives you all semester to do it, plus attendance isn't mandatory and he records all lectures and posts them on canvas.
His class is completely lecture based. There is no visual presentation or textbook to help you follow his lectures, and his lectures are (personally) extremely hard to follow. He does not repeat ANYTHING and jumps from topic to topic constantly. His exams are very hard, but curved. if you dont like taking notes, stay far away from him.
A few thing to know about his macro class: 1.Lectures and materials are unorganized sometimes chaotic (Not very tech savvy) 2.His opinions are controversial 3.Must take notes on EVERYTHING 4.VERY specific test questions 5.Grades depend on 2-3 tests 6.Questions are sometimes random 7.Most class failed the tests 8.Huge curves 9.Rewatch lectures
AVOID THIS GUY. I kid you not but this man is straight up racist. I've taken 2 classes with him before dropping. In the first class he told us that white supremacy is a thing and was created by the left to attack white people. In the 2nd class he told us that white crime numbers was inflated because Hispanics have been mistaken for white people.
-2 tests and one final(non cumulative) - WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS - tests will ask specific questions about the stuff he talks about and will incorporate materials from books(u can find online) and movies that he will show in class - professor gives huge curves so its possible to get an A like me - DOESN'T take attendance - No homework
1. HE CURVES BIG TIME 2. Attendance doesn't count whatsoever 3. Write down everything he said because there are so many numbers you have to know 4. He posts the lecture but you have to rewatch them to understand it
If you want the easiest A of your life just by taking heavy notes, this is the class for you. 2 required books but you can buy them for like 5 dollars. Some lectures are just propaganda but if you listen to them some of the others genuinely teach you things. The people who fail are the ones who complain about how "racist" he is. He isin't.
This has to be the most random way of teaching I have ever experienced. 4 test all based on lectures (no slide shows, just him talking) , even if you try to write all he says there would still be questions on the test that made 0 sense. The class was basically a guessing game rather than actually leaning. Thankfully he does curve:)
His tests make no sense, this professor provides no slides or materials to the class even if you do badly on the tests he still curves.
If you write down everything he says( and that means every word he says), Read the book he asks you to read and listen to the lectures outside of class, you will be more than fine. That class is easy. This is not a class for learning, this is a class for getting a easy A without studying or thinking.
Very racist and you barely learn anything about macroeconomics because all he does is rants about his political views and other opinions. Goes on long tangents. You have to write down everything he says and everything from the book because his exams are open notes, but anything he said could be thrown on the test. Heavy note taking and reading.
Oh man, this was an experience. Write down literally every little fact he says, and you will pass, and most of those facts aren't even about economics. The classes ranged from denying climate change to BLM to religion. The tests were open notes so you should pass easily.
Nothing meaningful.
BRILLIANT PROFESSOR.. his teaching method is the easiest way to learn, he tells you everything, if you listen and do your work you will get your grade. super knowable
Gotta take meticulous notes in this class - everything the prof says counts. Tests are tough but curved, so with some effort and using Unstuck AI for study prep, you can nail an easy A.
