Cole is cool. You will learn and you will enjoy simply being in his presence. He has the most Buddha-like personality. Just being around it is good for your soul--and he's a good instructor and all that...
very strange style of teaching. but he was very easy going. if you like really easy classes this is the one for you.just a warning he is a pretty weird guy and the class is pretty boring.

Interesting background, got along well with young and old students alike. Corrected students when they were rambling about things they had no idea how to speak on, and held up the slightly higher than ENG 101 expectations that were in the syllabus.
He seemed like a nice guy, but I didn't learn anything in the class, at all. So if you want to just hang out and talk, and every once in awhile pick up a book, he'd probably be fine for you.
Great teacher! Best class I took at SCCC. He is very enthusiastic, but really makes you learn. I definitely recommed him!
He was late most of the time, expects all reading assignments done before class. does pop up quizes, few essay on dumb topics from his book. It was a really easy class but does not influence you to write better. spent only 3 days talking about sentence struture. Dont take him! He will grade you poor portfolio. I thought i had A or B+ gave me 2.2!!!
This dude puts no effort into his classes. It's as if he doesn't care at all about his students' well being. Either that or he is a very bad teacher. Most days are dedicated to nonchalant discussions about total minutia.
Class was a joke. English 101 is always a waste of time, so maybe he's no different from most. Still, he was late or absent often, we kept dream journals and watched movies and learned absolutely nothing about English. Literally, we had one lesson on punctuation and the rest was just meaningless papers and peer editing. Whatever. Got a 4.0.
Cole is often late or cancels class without notice. Class seems easy in the begging but you really don't learn anything about English or how to write a paper. Then you are excepted to write a research paper following strict MLA guide lines without ever learning what MLA is or how to use it.
I liked the class, it would have been more enjoyable for me if there were a bit more emphasis on mechanics of creative writing.
don't except to do anything in this class. and don't plan on howing up every day either, because it doesn't really matter. Also the use of our "textbook" is slim to non so don't bend over backwards to buy it.
I really enjoyed our poetry class with Mr. Cole. His feedback was very helpful and taught me where I needed improvement or not. I am disappointed that the ratings below were so malicious, Mr. Cole is a very good teach and anyone would be lucky to have him!

Mr. Cold is the man with the plan. He knows what he's talking about and is very good at what he does. Funny guy, kept me paying attention in class during those early 8 am morning (which is very hard.) Lots of writing assignments but there fun and he really teaches you.
I am taking this class just because I thought I was going to continue farther at SCCC but since I am planning on never returning I would have never taken this class
He is cool and interactive.
I love Mr. Cole! He is very straight forward and asks any questions you have concerning your grade or any homework assigment.
He was kind of vague with some of the assignment directions, but was over all a good instructer.
I enjoyed Douglas Cole's teaching style very much. I signed up for his 101 as well. He was rather vague with assignments as far as clarity of what he wanted. However, all of the assignments were in the syllabus. I feel as if I learned a lot about proper grammar and I feel ready to move on to ENG101.
His a very relaxed teacher. Almost too relaxed at times. I feel I didn't learn all the things that may be needed for English 101. Only time will tell.
I learned a great deal, and I am excited for the next step in the learning process.
I really enjoyed Mr.Cole's class! I didnt learn much but that was expected since it was pretty much a review of stuff we learned in highschool. The one thing i really like about Mr.Cole is he wasnt extremely strict and didnt pile crazy amounts of homework on us! Mr. Cole is a really layed back and down to earth teacher. I really enjoyed his class!
I want you to talk more about English 101 and 102 and tell us how we could prepare for those two classes.
GOOD,FREE, AND UNDERSTANDING
He was a fun, interesting teacher. I would take him again
this teacher is fun. while the structure of the class is clear, he also bends the rules a bit. creates a cohesive class atmosphere, where everyone participates, gets to know each other and becomes involved.
you are a good teacher. However, students expect you to explain more and detaily on everything which students work in the class.
It's kind of a easy class to take. We don't have a lot of homework, and we don't have the final. If you want to get a high score, you can take it.
he's kinda easy but we have to do the portfolio. I don't know how he works on it...
Laid back, casual teaching style; very accessible; some grammar exercises felt uneven for varying levels of proficiency in class; overall a good experience
Excellent and supportive. Wonderful teaching style allowing for an exploratory approach rather than a directive one. Very cool.
It fun for an English class.
He is a nice guy:)
cool guy
One of the nicest professors I ever had. He is always open for questions so...the more you ask in the class, the better you get something out of the class. If you like creative writing and want an easy going, friendly type of professor, He is the right guy.
It is a easygoing teacher and its a easy class!! even actually i didnt leran a lot i enjoy the class. we can writh freely about everything^^
a pretty nice class and teacher! homework is not too much.but you won't learn a lot in writing.
he gave us the chances to write free, to develop our free fellings
Awsome teaching and i loved it. Helped me a lot.
I don't know if this is normal but he made it mandatory to go to the computer lab and comment about him on here while he sat in a near by chair making sure we all did it. Many people felt pressured to leave great comments because we have not gotten our final grade yet.
really nice and easy going guy, knows what he's talking about and interesting to listen to. however, going to class everyday was annoying. sometimes class was only 15 -20 minutes long and felt like "why are we here?" people in the class seemed uninterested in participating in class activities which was also annoying.
I would take another class with him...
He struts around like he's God's gift to women. He's vain.
Creative writing students beware! Offers absolutely NO useful insight into creative pieces. The only sign that he had even touched my work were the coffee rings on each one. The readings were erratic and useless. He clearly loves the subject, but his class COMPLETELY lacks ANY structure. Hard to fail, easy elective credit.
He's very Chill. He starts talking about subject and will make you interested. He's a smart guy. If you put in any effort, he will give you good grade. But he's really lazy, never came to class on time. Just turn by the due date the papers. No structure in his class. You need to have a good ENG 101 teacher. You don't learn anything in his class.
Some people have math anxiety, but I had English anxiety!! His classroom was a safe and posititve learning environment for me. I really felt like he cared a lot about his students, when his students cared about class. He was so helpful, and very easy to talk to! I admit, class was a bit unstructured at times, but that did not bother me so much.
you will learn nothing in his class. i took him last quarter...at the last day of quarter, i realized that i got nothing from his....spending my summer taking his class was my nightmare...but he has an inspiring voice which easily lead u to fairy tales
Prof. Cole can unlock your creativity if you are willing and able to follow, listen and THINK!!! Loved both of his classes(ENGL&101 and 102),one of the best instructors at SCCC.(Not recommended for nerds and "structure" freaks, only for thinking individuals!!!) Especially recommended for people with English/writing anxiety!Life changing instructor!
he's a pretty cool guy, last quarter he was great. but this quarter he has become fond of rambling on about nothing really and losing most of the class to glassy eyes
he pretty much graded on how many pages our papers were. i didnt turn in a journal and a paper and still got an A
His class was very boring. I did not learn anything! He let us out early all the time, so i often wished that i had another teacher who wouldn't be lazy to teach anything new. i could have written all the papers on my own, without his useless help
He is so lazy..always lates for class...his classes are so boring...he can't help u anything with ur paper...hard grader...easy to pass but impossible to get a good grade...not recommended to take his class...
Don't waste your time. He gives you pointless essays on like "things you see" and then doesn't give you much help on what to fix on them. There is no way that you know how you are doing in the class and in the end he just gives you a random grade when you KNOW you did better than that. He seems very lazy and careless about your education.
fire him please
He spouts off a lot of new age nonsense. He has beautiful hair. Does not like to teach class, so he imposes group discussion on students roughly three times a week.
Lat to class everyday. Very passionate about creative writing, and allowing students freedom in their writing. If you're already solid in writing, it's an easy A. Just show up, the work is easy and laid back. If you need help with your writing and learning grammar etc, this probably isn't the class for you because he barely touches on any of that.
In ENGL 101 you're supposed to learn how to improve your writing. Instead, Cole gives you a 2 or 3 day warning and you have to write a random essay...and then the idiots who don't know how to write workshop your paper. Then you get your grade with no feedback to help you improve. Take Nollan instead. He brings cookies on Fridays & actually teaches.
Uses the book his wife wrote and costs $60, it wasn't even a real text book more like a small chapter sized work book. Had weekly group discussions on paper we wrote, DID NOT help on improving my writing!
He's a nice guy, but the curriculum was irrelevant. I took him for summer and i dreaded it, i think he just teaches to get paid. I'd much rather take a class that would intrigue me. It was like "write and essay about this..." you get the points for turning it in, not for how good the essay actually is.
Easy A, but you really don't learn much. Really laid back class.
HE IS ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS I EVER HAD. HE IS VERY INFORMATIVE, HELPFUL AND EASYGOING. HE ALWAYS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS AND IS PERFECTLY CLEAR IN EXPLANATIONS. HE LAOS HAS A GREAT SENCE OF HUMOR. WE LIKE HIM AND THE WAY HE TEACHES! (RUSTAM)
The only good thing about this class is that there are deadlines for reading Shakespeare. Otherwise, he ducks out of class, doesn't actually teach us anything, provides no other structure, doesn't seem to want to really be there, wastes 20 mins of time talking about TV. It's a waste of money and time.
His class is super easy, but it not means u can get high grade, may be super low. All in all, you cannot learn anything from his class, as he is not a responsible but strange teacher.
Laid back, a lot of people expect him to hold their hand through the writing process, I was frustrated at first for the lack of feedback, but started going to the office hours and he was more than helpful. He expects you to show up to class, when you don't make that effort, he doesn't make one for you. He is very much a transcendentalist.
Loved this class, love this professor. He's laid back and relaxed, and was interested in what the class had to say about interpreting literature. Or he pretended to be. Spent a lot of time talking about transcendentalism. Wasn't grammar, but still fascinating. I would take a class from him again in a heartbeat. Doesn't hurt that he's pretty!
He didn't really teach anything and he cancelled his class a lot. He seemed to be an easy-going and a little bit irresponsible instructor. I don't recommend his class.
The course I took with this teacher was online, and he provided very little feedback. His total correspondence was less than 50 words for the whole quarter. The comments he did give were useless at best. He also failed to respond to any emails sent to him. He doesn't deserve the title of "instructor".
The worst Instructor ever. he was DISORGANIZED AND UNPREPARED. Avoid sign-in to his class because you learn nothing but wasting your valuable time.
Well. He seems like really nice to everyone. Thats why I took this class. But he hasnt helped anything so far. I learn nothing from him much. He likes talking something non-sense. Thats useless. I dont recommend his class. Any classes I mean. Hes easy but it doesnt help u to gain wat u expect at all. As I c, he doesnt give the high marks :(
His class is easy, so if you show up and do the assignments you'll get a good grade. He doesn't show up on time or give solid deadlines for the papers due.
He was fun and helpful. So easy to follow and used the book in helpful ways. His essay ideas were simple and were easy to follow.
I took this as an online class. Good course to take online if you feel confident in your essay-writing skills already. Mr. Cole gives good feedback on essays but can be a little slow on answering emails. If you read the material and write thoughtful and solid essays, you will do well in this class. Would recommend.
Comes to class late. expects you to be ready with everything Monday. unclear about deadlines. three essays. awesome guy didnt really learn much though.
In short, one of the worst, if not THE worst professors I've ever had. He may be able to write, but he is HORRIBLE at communication!
I enjoyed Doug's class. I didn't learn a lot but the class itself was enjoyable. I like him a lot. And the reading assigned were interesting to me. I think the key is half of success is showing up.
He is a great teacher. Not over whelming. You must write in this class and follow directions even though they don't seem important at the time, in the long run they will come to bear. Do not let his laxness get you to be lazy. Be attentive and you will get an A. Follow his templates for writing formats, they are the clear and most affective way.
Turn in the assignments for an A. Don't expect answers to questions, just figure it out. Nothing challenging about the actual work.
Professor Cole is a great human being and Is very kind. His teaching style is amazing you won't get bored in class. As long as you show up and do the work there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Great teacher, very free with writing.
Highly recommended. Mr. Cole really helped me a lot.
Great opportunity to learn
Hard Class
I think he is really lack in caring as an instructor. I was amazed by his empathy for student who have to pay for their education. But on the 2nd week of class, I was really sick and had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks, then I returned to class with a doctor note and I only asked for half credit of missing works but he refused and I'd to dropit
The best Professor I have ever had . Mr. Cole, has all the best characters and skills that a great professor should have. He makes the times in the class very interesting for students and easy to learn what he is offering . I would take any of his classes without any hesitation.
The hardest part of writing an essay is starting an essay, Cole helped me overcome that step by step. He also cares about the well-being of his students, giving them the confidence and feedback they need in order for them to be comfortable with expressing themselves through writing. Cole is such an inspiring individual, I'm so glad I took his class
professor Cole has a great personality as human being. His class was entirely an eye opener for me, the lectures and materials he provided was interesting and helpful. He goes above and beyond to help and support his students, he is kind, an understanding, respectful of all students, helps all of his students according to their individual needs.
good. do your assignments on time and you're good. you get to choose your subject.
This was a super chill class and he's a super chill professor. Only 2 essays and weekly free writes that are easy. He gives good feedback on work but tends to get sidetracked during lectures, and some days I felt like I wasn't learning much. As long as you submit your work by the deadline you're guaranteed to get an A. The readings are also short.
Cole is a fun guy and teacher, but his lectures are more 50-minute ramblings than anything else. While it can be entertaining, I did not learn as much as I would've liked to in his class. Communication about due dates, expectations, and much else was not there. That aside, I appreciated that he was trans-friendly and encouraged creativity.
Not a really good responder to ask questions. Didn't hold any Zoom class throughout the whole quarter, so sometimes I did get lost. Grading criteria was not so clear. However, as long as you are working hard, you will get an easy A.
Make sure to complete his work one day ahead.
He is a tough grader yet do not teach anything. Dont waste your time.
Taking him was a BAD idea. I don't recommend it! I haven't seen a professor with such laziness. Doesn't come to class as expected and is strict with attendance.
I took this class in the summer. It was just writing a research paper on any topic. No lectures, no extra reading, some group work. He was very hands off, and barely said anything about my writing. Grades came back quickly. He took off ten points for each day work was late. I like more engagement, but if you want to be left alone it could be great.
Professor Cole was very explicit about expectations and willing to work with students when needed. Instead of a textbook we used a book of short stories as well as other sources to write about. Easy enough if you keep up on Canvas updates/come into class. He can go off topic sometimes during lectures so keep that in mind.
This class was objectively horrible. I know more about his professional and writing life than I do on the subject of English101. We did not even go over grammar or punctuation until the last two weeks of class. You're assigned a lot of videos on dense subjects, but you aren't really taught writing. If you want to improve, don't take this.
Professor Cole is pretty chill, but his lectures can meander. Assignments are straightforward - just turn them in on time for a solid grade. I found unstuck ai and the free textbook helpful for staying on top of things. Not the most engaging class, but not too difficult either.
