HIS 111 was a lecture so personal attention was not really an issue. He put me to sleep a couple times. The readings are boring but broken up so that you can easily catch up. Basically have to go to class to take notes.
FOI isnt fun anway. he made it so difficult when it was supposed to be a blow off. hes very light on his feet, and hes boring. he picks favorites. i didnt like him as a teacher at all and would never take another class tought by him.
Far too easy a grader, when he gives an A for my C quality work there isn't any incentive to work harder. I turned in poor work the whole time and the worst I got was a B+

He does pick favorites. I happened to be one of them. However, it was because I actually worked hard, unlike most of our class. Bottom line, if you show a little effort and turn in educated responces you will get an easy A.
took his class over the summer. taught with energy, but that didn't necesarily make it interesting. a pretty good teacher overall
Puts you to sleep. Is a german Prof. so all the books were german. It was ok.
this guy was soooo boring.....he totally picks favorites..just give effort and talk ot him and he would give you an a or b....disliked foi
the times i did go to class i was thinking of scratching my eyes out.
A lot of reading. No real grading scale, seemed like he just gave grades. Picked favorites.

Definitely played favorites, even to the extent of giving better grades to his favorites, could get rather boring. Focused a lot on Mexican history for being a class about American history. Grading was rather obscure.
This class is not hard, there is just a few papers that suck and a play to see and review. He is a really nice guy and tries to entertain the class. I think its interesting, easy, but can get boring because all lectures are that way.
I really liked him. He's very nice and friendly. His lectures were boring, but when are lectures ever not..... He used humor and included some interesting stories. The tests weren't too hard and he gives a lot of ideas for the papers assigned etc.
Worst professor I ever had. Stay away from him. Doesn't care about his job, and makes people look stupid just to make himself feel important.

He has a tendency to sweat in class! Sometimes he needed to excuse himself from class to change his shirt. He also enjoyed talking about things that sometime seemed inappropriate at times...but it was amusing to him. He loved Pleasantville for some odd reason and he also never really knew what was going on...i recommend requesting him as your teach
Lots of reading, immpossible quizes, does not answer e-mails and would not allow me to see my tests even when i came to his office, does not give many A's, pretty much a total jerk
not helpful and his stupid grad student grades the tests, and its all essay which blows. he gave me a comment and i asked him to explain why he gave me that grade and he said your right, but i just don't think it was well written, i asked could u expand, he said it just doens't tie together, What, He sucks, not helpful, and favorites people who are latin american descent

He is a horrible professor. Test have nothing to do with his lectures and he goes off subject a lot. Easy to do well on test, meaning around a B. Could easily make this class an independent study. Very boring and hard to stay awake in class.
Difficult class, but Cutter teaches it well. Previous comment is WRONG - his tests have everything to do with his lectures. His weekly quizzes, however, are over assigned readings. The readings are long and hard to get through. Tests are essay format and are difficult if you don't pat attention. Only take course if interested in subject.
The MOST boring teacher i have ever had. Class drags on and weekly quizzes over reading might as well be "what was the 45th word on page 28." Text is poorly written and hard to follow. And i pretty much agree with everyone else rating. He sucks
He is very hard to follow in lecture- jumps around topcis alot and tangents easily. Text hard to read, difficult Friday quizzes over text every week. Test is difficult as well, even with studying and reading. Definitely would not recommend as a gen ed as long as Cutter is the professor

This teacher was awful. He was the most boring person ever. His lectures were impossible to follow-they were just scribbles on the overhead. His weekly reading quizzes were bad too. His tests were impossible to get an A on, becuase he looked for every little detail. Do not take this professor!
He is knowledgeable but very boring. Quizzes every week mostly from the book, gives you a study guide with everything that will be on the test.
Very intelligent guy but the material is boring! There are quizzes every week and they are not that easy! Hes hard to follow in clas Two book reports due about 5 pages a piece, 2 outside events to go to (2 more papers) and a latin america restaurant review (another paper). The tests are not bad cause he gives you what is going to be on the tests.
He is knowledgable of the material but forgets that the class is not. His lectures are all over the place and are not organized at all so they are a little hard to follow at times. OVerall, though the class is not that difficult if you put in the work. He gives you the test basically in the study guide so you have no excuse to do poorly on them.
Pompous ****. He forgets that the students are paying him to be there. He has issues with control and a huge ego. He seems to forget he only has a masters degree. His class is unorganized and poorly managed. His TA does all the real work. Grades papers and test for a 100 level class expecting near graduate level detail. Horrible professor.
Sometimes his voice can seem a bit boring, but sometimes he is hilarious. He has weekly quizzes that are hard if you don't do your readings. The part that sucks about the class is the papers. You have to read BORING books then write responses to them. The paper isn't necessarily hard, the books are just arduous.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had at ISU in all of my four years. I have never felt so uncomfortable in his office and I have never felt so stupid when attending his classes. This professor will be definately in the news within the next few years for a sexual crime, most definately.
worst teacher ive ever had. doesnt care at all what you say. preaches about religion. grades extremely hard. thinks his class comes before all. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HORRIBLE! Grades far too hard on essays. He expects you to know everything and understand it all when he never really tells you what he wants you to learn. He has weekly 1 page essays due every Friday and are only worth 5 points, but never gives you 5 points no matter what you write. DO NOT TAKE MR CUTTER
Terrible teacher. Grades WAY too vigorously and expects you to know everything, even before he's taught it. Working hard on essays will get you no where because he expects graduate level work in a 100-level class. Avoid this teacher as best as possible.
I really enjoyed Mr. Cutters class, although he would grade decently hard on tests and papers it was still very doable if you just kept decent notes and did the assigned readings (of which there were very few) I would definitely have him as my teacher again and I'd recommend him to any of my friends.
Never take this class with Cutter if you can avoid it he is horrible!!! Makes awkward jokes, rambles in class, lectures are pointless and unclear. I did not miss a class and took great notes yet I will be lucky to get a C. Grades tests and paper SO HARD!!!! Says one thing grades a completely opposite way!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Grades unnecessarily hard, his notes are extremely disorganized, overall the worst professor I have ever had in my entire academic career. I gave 110% effort, never missed a class, and yet I was lucky to pull off a B.
Grades too hard and expects too much for a 100-level class. I never missed a day of class and worked very hard on all assignments and still only got a B in the class. Don't take class with this guy, you'll put a lot of work in for a grade less than you wanted.
Loved the class, very interesting, but extremely hard work. Going to the lectures always helps, but there is a lot of outside work. He knows his stuff, but lectures are sometimes unorganized. One of the hardest classes I have taken.
He is a horrible teacher, grades real tough for a 100 level class, writes real sloppy sentence fragments on the board and is tough to follow, do not take him for a teacher, all exams are short paragraph/essay form, assigns a lot of busy work and expects every one to be as interested as he is. DONT TAKE
worst teacher i have ever had
makes you do too much work for a 100 level class and grades way too hard for the amount of work you put into it!
The class was difficult, but very interesting. He knew his stuff, but didn't seem to be very helpful. The key is going to lectures and reading the material.
Worst history prof I've ever had. I've never had one before that required you to memorize EVERY date--and I'm a history major. Avoid this class at all costs, total waste of oxygen.
Very long class, the class has only a little bit of the finals. He gives out a study guide with everything you need to know for the final and midterm. There is a group project to cushion the grade, and a long paper on a novel.
Very intelligent and lectures a lot of information. Tests are short answer and essay and very difficult. You will not do well on tests if you do not use every date applicable. Overall if you go to class (and attendance is mandatory) and if you read for the weekly friday quizzes you should do average. There are not many opportunities for points.
At first I thought maybe he had confused this class with a 200 or 300 level he was also teaching, but no. He expects 300 level work for a 100 level Gen Ed. Likes to pretend he's from Mexico. Just go to class, sign the attendance sheet, and read the textbook.
Keeps attendence so make sure someone signs you in if you're not going to go to class. Expects you to know what is in the book and what he lectures, tests are not that difficult. Gives you the questions about a week beforehand. If you meet him outside of class it will be akward. Take him if you need the class not terribly bad all things considered.
Teacher is boring and test are way to hard for 100 level. I missed a couple of Fridays and the quizzes killed me. The book is a terrible and is lots of random dates that you must know. Avoid this class with him
I was nervous in the beginning but as time went on I felt more comfortable in it. He is a good professor with great enthusiasm of subject. Good to talk to if you have questions. The only problem are his notes. He writes one word and you have to listen to come up with the rest. Differentiating between what is important and what is not is difficult.
Most entertaining class I've taken at ISU. He makes the lectures very interesting by telling a joke every once in a while. Tons of extra credit opportunities.
We had two big essays over two books. If you read the books and listen and follow what he expects you will do fine. The books are boring though. He gives you what is on the final a week ahead of time and he is very helpful during office hours. I got an A so its not impossible, but he waits to tell you any overall grade until the end
at first i was scared because i came on here and saw all the negative comments but wow this guy in pure genious and hes so knowledgable about his subject great teacher will not only teach you about Latin America but about all sorts of random things and you will definitely use what you learn in this class i think everyone should take this!!
Do not take this class. You must write two papers on uninteresting books. There is also a weekly Friday quiz just so he can force you to be in his boring class. If you like weird jokes and a hard gen ed take this class!
Love this man! Easily the most instructive and entertaining class I've *ever* taken. He tells history like a story, I wish all of my classes were as engaging as this one.
I loved history until I took this class.
AVOID!!!! Hardest book ever that u have to read bc have quiz ever friday. 1 midterm & 1 final-hard! random papers on random books. group presentation that i dont think counts for anything. he gives hardly any guidelines. Never in his office hours. unhelpful, rude, crazy guy. He is ridiculous! way too hard for a 100 level class!! PLEASE AVOID!!!!
Very hard grader. Must work very hard and not a blow off class. Must buy 3 different books. A paper on one book. Weekly quizzes. No blackboard so you basically have no idea what grade you're getting. Lectures aren't that bad but you must attend- takes attendance and has random quizzes on Fridays- some Fridays he doesn't have them. Hard class!
I had Cutter for History of Latin America. He gives weekly quizzes on the reading (had a bit of trouble but didn't read much.) He has questionable grading methods (if he likes it it's an A-ish if not you're screwed. I didn't know if I liked him at first but he's an awesome guy. He's really entertaining. His lectures a little all over the place at times but they are ALMOST ALWAYS interesting and he relates to students well. Make sure you get to know him (introduce yourself) and you'll do alright.
So disorganized. Midway through the semester the syllabus was irrelevant to the class. Stopped reading the book, lectures were on topics we were supposed to read two weeks previous or two weeks in the future. Easy A if you take notes and can deal with his disorganization
The people who have problems with him are the ones who don't attend class and don't ask for help. Yes, the class is tough, there is no way around it. But if you would give the class a chance, take good notes (write down everything he says, basically) you'll do fine. Don't let the people who say he is bad influence your decision here. He is great.
This guy gets a bad rap for no reason. Yeah, he's a little off the wall, but he means well and is very helpful. The material isn't too difficult if you go to class and understand what he is looking for on the tests. Half the semester is spent on class presentations. It's a lot easier than people want you to think.
He is really nice, but completely disorganized his notes do not make any sense. You have no idea what your grade is at anytime during the class it is also very unclear what he is looking for on a paper the is worth 20% of your grade, if you can avoid taking him I would.
I will never forget his one liners. Good class, great man.
He has a rude opinionated sense of humor. His notes are sloppy and do not make sense. You have to do ALOT/ an unreasonable amount of reading and quiz quizes every friday on information that you would never pick up from the book. He has unrealistic expectations and isnt considerate of the fact that were in more then 1 class.
He is a horrible teacher. He is a nice guy at times but what he ask for in his papers make no sense. You never know your grade at times. Plus everything he grade he is a stickler on, Do NOT take him
Notes are all over the place. Goes off topic alot. 3 papers for the whole semester and tests are difficult.
Doug Cutter is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. His tests are beastly (all essay questions) and we have a quiz every friday on a reading we had to do from the textbook. He picks the most obscure information to put on the quiz. He is pompous and rather rude in class. The amount of reading expected for the class is ridiculous. DON'T TAKE HIM
Mr. Cutter has a hard time with notes. His tests are simple and straight forward and so are the projects. The reading quizzes, which sometimes happen and sometimes don't, are less than necessary. His class room demeanor is often rude and opinionated. Would not recommend.
The tests are hard, as well as the big paper. Mr. Cutter is really critical and is a tough grader too. That being said, he is a good guy. He sometimes is a little rude, but most of the time is funny. He really wants his students to pass. If you go up to him and ask for help regarding grades, he will meet you half-way. All in all a great teacher.
If you don't show up to class or read your textbook you're going to do poorly(welcome to college.) Tests are an essay and short answers and he gives you a study guide a week in advance. I bombed weekly quizzes and still did well. Don't take Cutter's class if you can't handle a joke. He's knowledgeable about the material and will go on tangents.
Read the Chapters. He loves dates use as many as possible in you essay answers.
He's extremely rude and makes tons of opinionated jokes... The class is going ok I guess don't really know my grade... He annoys me with the type of co meets he makes and how he always goes on tangents
well this guy is amazing i sit on the exact front bench and enjoy every minute of it, he is very knowledgeable goes of topic but is helpful as well. really fun class if you can handle a joke, best class im taking this semester even gave me free points for watching a good movie. study for the quizzes and work on the paper, you will have fun
He is the worst teacher I have had at Illinois State! He will not answer questions in class and is always rude. He thinks he is superior to students. For the exams he expects you to be able to write paragraphs about terms he never talks about in class! He is also very repetitive and will talk about the same term for days! Do NOT take him!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! Extremely rude, and a terrible sense of humor. Unclear on what he wants, confusing, goes and tangents and repeats himself. He actually made me cry because he singled me out so much for no reason. AVOID at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE!!! By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He constantly yells at students in front of the whole class and makes everyone extremely uncomfortable. He knows about history but has no idea how to teach and just rambles on. Seriously HORRIBLE.
He is pretty intimidating and I do poorly on his weekly quizzes. The paper feels like a lot to do but hey its college and I like his style of teaching I had no interest in this class but I learned a lot and found it interesting if you reach out to him he is more than willing to help.
He was extremely helpful with any questions I had. I am not a history person at all, and he made the assignments easy for everyone. Also, he is not that difficult of a grader. I would take his class.
I think he was a really great teacher. Yeah, it was tough, but not impossible. We're in college now so that's how it is. He is very knowledgable too. I also think he was hot in that older, mature way. I recommend this class because I had no interest in History prior, but still did well. Take this class with Professor Cutter!
Not very organized. Makes rude comments on papers when returned. Very hard to understand what he wants on assignments. Midterm and final are all writing. Avoid.
Prof. Cutter was easily one of the most unorganized and scatter-minded professors I've ever had. He jumps between topics without any linking material and expects you to have a prior knowledge before coming to class. He required a book that he assigned homework from one time. Took the whole semester to grade a paper. Avoid this class at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE! I was told not to take him and thought it could not be that bad. Worse teacher I have had so far in my college education. Doesn't believe that grades matter so you will not know your grade throughout the semester. Very unorganized and makes rude comments to students and to the class overall. Avoid if you can.
Good guy but honestly try to avoid his class if you can. I learned a lot but it was a lot of work for just a gen ed
Prof. Cutter is a very knowledgeable teacher, I will give him that. However, I did a lot of work for this gen ed. He doesn't give out a rubric or any guidelines for papers or groups projects. He will ridicule you & other students. I did learn a good amount but he has no lesson plans and skips around a lot. I also did not know my grade at all.
Captures the students attention with wit and humor but some found it very rude. He's the kind of professor you either love or hate. I personally found that a lot of my classmates did not like him because of his harsh grading on papers and rude comments he left on them. WILL call students out in front of the class. The midterm and final are simple.
The lack of ANY online support whatsoever killed this class for me. The inability to find out what grade I had led to a nasty surprise when I was finished with the class. I am a bit salty but Cutter is a very scatterbrained dude who takes FOREVER to grade stuff, leaves questionably productive comments, and jumps wildly from topic to topic in class.
For everyone out there who is bashing him, let me make something clear: he is an amazing teacher. All you have to do is come to class and pay attention. He has one rule, and that's to keep your cell phone away. His class was so easy, you just need to put some work in. He gives you exactly what the tests will be. HOW CAN YOU NOT GET AN A???
This class is pretty tough for a Gen Ed. He assigns three papers and two of them are based on books that read. Quizzes are really hard, he looks for very specific stuff. If you respect him, he will respect you. Don't use your phone in his class! He hates that.
Horrible and rude teacher. Very offensive and horrible and hard grader. Did not learn anything. Worst teacher. Many students have reported him to the Department
Just don't take this class. This teacher and class will ruin your semester. The guy is not a good professor and his teaching style is horrible. Will scribble key words on the board occasionally and has to voice his opinion on random things completely unrelated to class. Completely unhelpful in every aspect of the class. AVOID!!!
He is a terrible professor. He's rude and disrespectful. He does not care to help students succeed whatsoever. He gives you a whole bunch of unnecessary information, none of which will actually be on the midterm. His teaching style is horrible, he scribbles words on a white board that you can't read. Do not take his class.
Material became actually interesting because of how Cutter presented the material. He doesn't do powerpoint, just lecture and whiteboard work. BE ATTENTIVE, COME TO CLASS, TAKE NOTES, DO YOUR READINGS AND SEE HIS OFFICE HOURS. Quiz every week, you have 2 papers and midterms are short answer. He does pay attention to attendance so don't skip. :)
What you learn in his class during lecture is barely useful when it comes time to take a test, although he does take attendance. Expect to take a chapter quiz every friday. There are 2 big papers , 2 small papers, a midterm and final. It is a lot of memorization and he does expect you to memorize EVERYTHING. Not a fun or easy teacher.
I'll admit this class was very hard for a Ged Ed. However, if you are willing to put it the amount of work, you'll get a good grade. He offers to read rough drafts, so get your paper done before it's due so he can give you feedback. My advice is go to his office hours so he knows who you are, if he likes you it seems he's a little less tough on you
Never take this persons class. Horrible attitude. He called me out for leaving early one day for work, i was sitting in the back of class and did not disrupt anyone around me. Very self-righteous.
One of the hardest classes to take. He is unclear in all of his lectures so tests are hard to study for. There are only 2 tests (midterm and final) but he gives you terms and essay questions and you have to write specific paragraphs about each term. 2 papers 5 pages each on different books, grades them hard. Weekly reading quiz
Professor Cutter was by far the hardest grader I have ever had IN MY LIFE. He is UNCLEAR with ALL directions. You think you got an A on a paper? WRONG. I had gone to multiple office hours and asked him for help to which I left the meeting in only a headache and the urge to cry out of confusion. Lectures are interesting, although he is horrible.
Only interesting for the first couple weeks, after that he just teaches confusingly, writes a word on the board and just talks about it and tells irrelevant stories, the midterm and exam are pointless because no matter how much you know, your answers aren't good enough to him
He gives you exactly what is going to be on the test, offers to read rough drafts over the 2 five page papers (TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS), gives you 140 points for going to 2 movies and typing 2 one page papers. The people that did poorly in this class were people that didn't put in effort. I worked SO hard and ended up with an A, it's not impossible.
Cutter is the type of professor that you either really like or can't stand. Expect to read a lot, no instruction on notes, and you're assigned BS papers. Worth it to take solely for it covering two gen eds.
Although this class is harder than I would prefer for a ged ed, Cutter makes it enjoyable and is hilarious. There are reading quizzes every Friday and he assigns a few papers throughout the year. The final exam and midterm are also all writing. If you aren't willing to put up some extra work, you probably should consider a different class.
Professor Cutter is honestly a great teacher. He does have weekly reading quizzes every Friday but I am not a good quiz/test taker and I've gotten A's and B's on all so far. He also gives great feedback. Youll have to write one 5-page essay on a short book you read and he will grade a rough draft and help you with any questions you have. He's great
This class was not easy, but if you actually show up, read the chapter, and try on the weekly quizzes; Cutter will notice. He grades extremely tough, and you really need to know your material, but at the end of the day he is a genuine guy and will give you the true grade that you deserve. Midterm, final, paper, outside events and weekly quiz.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. I didn't go to class a few times and he called me out on it and ever since has hated my guts, I try hard to do good in his class but he doesn't care.
He makes you read 40+ pages every two days. Only allows you to miss 6 classes a semester, or he drops your grade a letter grade. Publicly humiliates his students and talks down to them during class. The most boring and irrelevant class I have ever taken in my life.
Lots and lots of notes. Tries to be funny but you will only find the jokes funny sometimes. Lots of reading and quizes every Friday. Lectures are actually pretty interesting
He focuses more on telling his students how bad they are doing on everything instead of actually helping provide feedback on what you can do to make things better. He is the worlds slowest grader when it comes to anything. It took a month to get our very first paper back. His lectures are confusing because he can never stay on topic. Dont take him
Horrible teacher. Constantly gets off topic, assigns papers with no rubric and no grading scale. Is a very harsh grader, never adds assignments into gradebook. Is not easy to talk to, lectures are confusing and so scattered. Assigns things that don't even relate to the course, favors students who suck up.
He's very unorganized when it comes to lectures. He writes stuff all over in the board. The due dates for some of the papers are not clear, and he makes you read 50 pages a week. He does make the material interesting at least during lecture, but also he gets very off topic as well. Also he hates technology, so don't pull up your phone in class.
Douglas is a huge pussy. I did not pay to hear his opinions.
Good guy, don't agree politically; still enjoyed lecture. Gave a lot of reading, lots of info during lecture. Mixed it up and told stories. Doesn't give A's for slacking. Do your job, talk to him, and you will be fine.
He was pretty great. You show up and take a quiz thats 5 points every Friday but will make the questions about the readings so he makes sure you read them. Sometimes he puts silly questions like your fav tv show for 5 points. He tells you exactly what will be on the midterm
Douglas Cutter's class isn't anything special, good or bad. The only part I actually disliked about the class was HIM. He will call you out in front of the entire class for literally anything including a bad grade ON A MIDTERM, or even missing some information on a project. He's a very rude guy.
I really don't like him as a teacher he often says things that are insulting or very opinionated. Heads up he doesn't give much notice on assignments I just got a 200 page reading and essay questions to answer all due with a weeks notice. The course overall is not to bad just his teaching style is not the greatest.
Not many tests and quizes
I don't doubt his intelligence, but I recommend avoiding this class. It's pretty obvious he doesn't really care about your grade or understanding of criteria for this class. He's unorganized, very opinionated, and an extremely hard grader without good explanation for why you missed so many points. Criteria is unclear and changed frequently.
Really great professor. Enjoyed this class, showed up because it was interesting and he has an entertaining teaching style. Show up, do the homework, and pass. Sometimes goes off schedule, but the assignments are easy. Things change a lot, but its very manageable. Fun class and gives a ton of Extra credit opportunities throughout semester.
While Professor Cutter is somewhat rude and inconsiderate, I found this class to be very interesting and enlightening. The material is well presented and while Cutters notes are lacking, his directions are clear and he tells you exactly what he his looking for. Take him exactly at his word otherwise youre doomed. Make sure to take good notes!
Very impersonal, very harsh, very very very very strict.
The midterm was not in the grade book a week before finals, there's no way to know what your actual grade is. The class is impossible to enjoy because it is very boring but he drops your grade for absences. Weekly quizzes that are impossible to get a good grade on and papers that take forever to write and 3 books to read throughout the semester.
Professor Cutter really cares about his students and wants them to do well. A lot of people don't like him because they don't go to class and don't read the material. It is very reading heavy, but if you show up to class and take notes you'll do just fine.
Professor Cutter gets off topic, but is passionate about what he teaches. The books we read were dry, which is typical in college, but the essays were 5 pages which would need to be filled with a lot of BS to meet the criteria. He is nice. This class was not fun but if need be, manageable. You need to show up, it's only 50 minutes.
Lets see, where to start. If you want a professor that makes sexist and racist comments in class, puts reggienet grades in once every four months, and doesnt tell you how you did on the midterm until the week before the final exam... then he is your guy!
I picked this class before this semester started and didn't drop it throughout, and nowI hate myself for it. He is a very strict grader and his class notes are horrible! It's very easy to space out during his classes and very tempting to skip but don't! Attendance is a must to try and stay on top of this class. He can also be very rude sometimes.
Unclear in his assignments and expectations. Openly rude to students. So much reading. Told us he wanted to make sure he lowered our grades.
Worst teacher I have had so far. He is unclear on what he wants from you, tells you their will be quizzes on certain days then does not give quiz. Horrible notes that are hard to follow, everyone I have talked to that have taken his class or are currently taking all dislike him. I am not exaggerating with what I am saying, it is very annoying class
He does know what hes talking abut and you can do well if you take good lecture notes. There are weekly quizzes on the reading on Fridays. His expectations are unclear. He does give the exam questions in advanced but he doesnt put grades in for ages and there is a ridiculous 6 page paper on a different book. Hes unprepared and changes due dates
The worst professor I have ever had. He is very unreasonable when it comes to his final and midterm exam (he wants to hand write 7 free response questions and 1-2 essays in 50 minutes.) Cutter is a negative professor and says rude things during his lecture 75% of this time. He WILL call you out. Does NOT provide helpful feedback on anything.
If you want to be miserable I would recommend this class. Professor Cutter has been rude and disrespectful since day 1. He gives confusing assignments with little to no guidance. His notes are confusing to follow. He in addition when reaching out via email gives 0 help, and his very rude in his responses. Don't ever take a class from him.
I had him this semester and I am doing fine in the class but I do NOT recommend him. He is rude and very condescending. His lectures on Zoom are very confusing, and he skips around a lot in lectures. Does not give much clarification on anything, when you ask questions he seems mad. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
I had Professor Cutter for History of Latin America in a fully online class this semester. I personally really enjoyed this class. The lectures can be a lot but they are interesting and he keeps them engaging. He raised all of our grades by 1% at the end of the semester and made the final optional. There are papers worth large chunks of your grade.
I had Cutter during the pandemic so it was online. He was super flexible because of this and even dropped a few assignments from his schedule to help his students out. He cares sooo much about his students, their health, and that they succeed. The class itself isn't the most interesting but you can tell he tries his best to engage the class.
most cocky teacher I have met. He even accused the class of cheating and reported 60 falsely accused students to the Dean of Students with little evidence. get ready to read 800 pages in total for essays as you will do only that. this class feels more like an English class then anything. i love writing but even at the end i felt drained from papers
Professor Cutter was extremely rude to me on the very first day of class. Over email he is very short and rude as well and clearly does not care about the well-being of ANY of his students. Ridiculously hard grader yet gives no guidelines of what he wants from you on any assignments or papers. Gives way too many readings. Worst professor I've had.
Professor Cutter's lectures were always very dry and I barely learned anything from the whole semester. Assignments were centered around writing with occasional quizzes over the textbook. The midterm was all writing and took way too much time and effort to complete. He is not very clear on expectations for assignments. Overall, not a good class.
Worst teacher I've had in a while. His notes are so vague all he does is writes down one word and talks about it for 5 minutes and then writes another word. This guy doesn't know how to teach and shouldn't be a professor. Don't even try to email him he's no help and really rude. I'm three weeks deep into this course and I haven't learned anything.
This dude is terrible and thinks he is funny but really just cringe. You will have weekly assignments and he has graded one so far this year and its 10/25. The tests are written only. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
This course wasn't organized at all, the material given wasn't understandable and he made many comments on students presentations that were utterly rude and not necessary. This was one of first history professors at ISU and I will never take one of his classes again. The assignments were messy and due dates were never easy to access. Just don't.
I started the class so hopeful but as the semester went on it only got worse. Started with weekly readings and papers and just lecture. Lecture is all over the place but that's fine. Then we got big papers and big projects. There were very vague instructions with each. Then he didn't return grades until the night before the optional final. Not Fair
Just read your book and go to class. Easy assignments do your work and youll pass. Really interesting guy!
Started out the year giving us weekly assignments, I bought a book that I really did not need b/c it was required but we only used it for two assignments that he still hasn't put into the grade book. Waits until the end of the semester to put big grades in, when he lectures he rambles a lot. Not a horrible professor but old fashioned & kind of rude
Make sure you attend class or you will be dropped a letter grade. Doesnt really put assignments in until the end of the semester. Offers a lot of ec. He will check over your papers and give feedback. Lecture notes could be confusing and the lectures were dry in general. He did give a 1% grade raise @ end of semester. Final was optional this sem.
Hes very narcissistic and thinks everything he says is funny. He lectures 95% of the class and is one of the worst notetakers I have seen in my life. The fact this guy got a job as a professor is such a joke. Avoid him at all costs.
I took this class because I thought it would be an easy A,but that wasn't the case. Lectures for a little bit and then goes off-topic for the rest of class. Had us go to four movies outside of class at the Normal Theater and write a 2-page paper on each one, not pertaining to the information talked about in class. Stopped going to class mid through
Lectures heavy, his notes are horrifying, attendance is mandatory. 2 tests, midterm/final. Midterm- 9 paragraphs hand written under 50 minutes. Final is mc. Likes to call students out in class and will yell at you if on your phone. 150 point 4 papers. Grades 2 months later. No clear expectations for class. All over the place. No organization.
One of the worst if not the worst professor I have ever had. Awful note taking. Goes off track way too often. Hard to get an understanding on what we are learning. Few 5 page essays where we didn't really know what to write about. Overall class is a total mess.
horrible rude professor, he insulted my presentation in front of the whole class. we spent the whole semester on world history event presentations, to the point where we had no time to learn anything else, and our final is on everyone's presentations. completely unorganized, horrible at putting anything in the gradebook. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
SLOW grader. Lazy and unclear grading criteria only to be backed by useless and messy lectures. His midterm for HIS 10403 was borderline unfair with multiple long answer questions with an essay portion. He himself stated that he expected this to take at least up to a hour to complete in a 50 minute class period. Gives horrible feedback.
Where do I start. The lectures are constant and go off on random stories. The notes are extremely hard to follow and have no organization. The lectures have NOTHING to do with the tests which all come from the book. You have to read multiple times to answer the questions correctly.
Douglas Cutter is awful. Exams are written and has to be 80 words which is funny cause his notes are 5 words. Do not take him unless you want to stress out
Mr Cutter wastes usually half of the class talking about random things-that aren't even entertaining. He likes to preach his ridiculous ideas about masculinity like "men can't drink margaritas" and will go on a 5 minute tangent. He does not answer questions and his notes make no sense. He grades his essays like he is an english professor.
he gave homework like 3 times and then never again. I would always get D's on exams but 95% on papers. as long as you attend class and never talk to him or make yourself known to him you should be fine. it is overly stressful though and lectures were boring to say the least. the material was kind of interesting but he made it boring.
his lectures are very disorganized and his notes are vague and you have to base them off of what he's saying. 2 papers, midterm, and an optional final this semester. only 2 in person quizzes and 4 online quizzes which the answers were on quizlet. he goes off in different directions sometimes but the material got more interesting as class went on.
Terrible professor, his notes are 5 words all just writing down what he is saying. Class is mandatory and he does pop up in person quizzes. 1 written midterm where you have to write as much as you can about historical events/people, optional final, 2 papers, 1 project/paper, a few online quizzes and a few in person quizzes. Very unclear.
Professor Cutter is a very nice person. However I would not take a class with him again. His lectures are all over the place. He never follows what is on the syllabus. He takes weeks to grade assignments and makes his GA grade everything which makes grades come in even later. For an 100 level class I thought the workload was very heavy.
This professor is not great & if you skip classes you're screwed. He is biased & if he doesn't like you, you probably wont pass. Also grades harshly. Seems at first to be chill but will also yell at you in front of the class if you are on your phone. Not a fan of his class, would never take again.
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He is a harsh grader, but I personally would say that he is open to questions and is willing to help. It's an okay class overall, not that I would recommend it though.
He is a nice person but gets very off-topic easily. He gave us a pre-assignment for a 5-page paper and the only feedback, he gives is "not good enough". Very Tough grader and expects papers to be perfect.
THIS MAN HAS MADE ME CRY. His lectures are so unorganized and never match what's on tests. He made us write two 5 page essays about documents that each took me 5 hours to read. Do not go on your phone either, he will call you out in front of the whole class. Other than that, he is slightly interesting and his weekly quizzes are online.
He will fail you on any assignment if he does not like you. He will like you if you participate but he will also make fun of you in front of the whole class if you're wrong This man isn't just a bad teacher, but a bad person as well. He doesn't care about anything but getting his paycheck He WILL fail you for absolutely no reason on any assignment
Save your self a headache and money! Do not take a class with Cutter, his style of teaching is out of date. Not very clear on directions and is often rambling in class. Also, his content is very unclear!
Douglas Cutter is one of the worst professors I have had. Directions for different activities are extremely unclear. He responds to emails in a very rude manner. Calls students out during class constantly. I definitely do not recommend.
ok um how do I start. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS CLASS. bro writes one word and explains everything with absolutely no context. tells so many stories. like bro we get it. Only gave us barely two weeks to read a whole book and write a five page paper. criticizes peoples presentations WHILE THEYRE UP THERE IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. look for a new gen ed.
This professor is Terrible, his lectures are unclear and he goes on tangents about random stuff not pertaining to the class all the time. On top of that there is no rubric for any paper and grading criteria is super unclear. His rough draft feedback is terrible and comes off as very condescending and rude, he is also very rude in emails
Rude Professor.
Professor Cutter is a kind guy in person, but once he steps into the classroom he directs the class in an unorganized manner which makes following the content of the course impossible. He constantly sh*t-talks student's efforts on projects and communications while also being incredibly opaque about WHAT HE EXPECTS IN ANY PROJECT. Spare yourselves!
Professor Cutter is passionate about the subject, but he is extremely unorganized and unclear. He gave me extremely unprofessional and condscending responses when I raised concerns about the gradebook being inaccurate. It's incredibly difficult to make sense of any lectures since he does not use slides and simply rambles. Avoid at all costs.
He's very passionate about the subject, but he goes on tangents which take up HALF the time! His lectures are unorganized and he only writes one word on the board and rambles on about that topic. His grading criteria is unclear with the lack of rubrics but getting an A or B is manageable. Tip for exams: choose written over multiple choice.
Cutter is a passionate professor and you can tell that he cares about his students. Just show up to class and take notes. If you skip, you WILL fall behind. Overall, I had a good time in his class. He is very funny.
Not bad if you put in the effort and show up to class. Goes off topic sometimes on funny rants but overall not bad lectures. If you pay attention, take notes and read and you will be fine. A few papers and exams and gives easy quizzes a lot
This class is one of the worst I have ever taken, and I wish I hadn't. He does not use PowerPoints for lecture, he writes one word on the board and then yaps. He is very unclear in grading criteria, and relatively rude in emails. I asked for clarification on something as I had been sick and he said, "write an outline, it's that simple." AVOID!!
Very few assignments he actually grades. Doesn't respond to emails and when he does is very rude and at times felt like he would try to belittle and insult you. You don't want to take this class.
No PowerPoint just writes words on the board and goes on about how it relates to the topic. When he assigns papers he gives very little detail on formatting and contents of paper and gets frustrated when we ask questions about said paper. Never once saw a rubric. Took him 2 months to grade a one-page assignment. Good luck trying to email him AVOID!
Gave 2 five page papers where the only source you could use was a book he assigned. I thought this would be an easy ged ed, but it was not that. Doesn't present slideshows, only writes one word on the board and expects students to write everything he says. Very boring class, and even more difficult if you aren't interested.
You will hear "just get it done" a lot.
This teacher is bad at teaching, he goes on lots of tangents about his personal beliefs on subjects that have nothing to do with the class. Even when he is on topic he jumps around making it difficult to follow as well as take notes. Whenever you ask him a question about anything to be concise he is very rude and condescending.
Professor Cutter can be a mixed bag - his classes are sometimes disorganized, but he's genuinely passionate. Staying engaged, using the free textbook, and tools like unstuck ai can help you succeed. Overall, an average experience with some highs and lows.
very easy grader. Like as long as you do it, he will give you a good grade. Barely checks assignments I had a 5-page paper graded in like 40 minutes so he's not very specific. Lectures low-key suck cause he's very jumbled but everything he says is very easy to learn yourself with a google search. he gets mad if you have technology out
Pretty bad lectures that are just a few words on a whiteboard. He embarrasses his own students in the middle of class for having electronics out. He's just rude and negative. Don't take this class if he's the professor.
All he does is talk about politics... didn't learn a thing about Latin American history
Doesn't use slides or PowerPoint, only lectures and you have to be very analytical with your note taking. There are only two exams, but what is on them is usually something he only lectured on for five minutes. Also, if you miss class, he is very unaccommodating and will not tell you what he discussed.
Douglas Cutter is the worst professor I have encountered during my time here at ISU. After successfully completing my assignments in a timely manner. He did not get to grading until four weeks after the assignment was due. He leaves very rude comments on papers and went on political tangents for about 20 minutes each day.
1/10. Douglas made the class purchase a $40 textbook that we used once the whole semester. He has no power points that you can refer to in his class, he teaches off of the top of his head in every class. He also put final grades in the very last day that they were due. 1/10 do not recommend.
Douglas Cutter is the first teacher I've ever had. Never ask for help, and he will lower grade for it. He grades things subjectively and whenever he wants. The class was out of 950 points over half of which he graded in the last week of the semester so you couldn't know your grade. I was 1 point short of A out 950 which was definingly on purpose.
Unusual teaching style, very lecture heavy so go to class. Extends deadlines sometimes but strict grader. Also said a slur in class and some other offensive things.
Literally one of the meanest professors I ever met, constantly gets very upset and yells at students for using any technology to takes notes, the things he talked about were the same and often makes innapropiate references to sexuality and human genitalia as well as says makes weird references to his life. Be prepared to be publicly shamed
In need of ADHD medication. Incredibly rude over mistakes and takes months to grade papers.
When students asked him questions, frequently he shut them down rudely by saying “we already went over this but you were on your computer” “you need to be better at listening” He failed at having important grade in within a timely manner (months). Due to how I've seen him treat student asking for help if you have a learning disability avoid him.
He is AWFUL. If you can take this class with anyone else, do so. He was so passive aggressive in class and inappropriate sometimes. He has few grades in the gradebook so if you get a bad grade on a paper, it is hard to get your grade back up. The papers are painful to write, and he tells the class he will not be impressed with your work.
I really enjoyed this course; exams were super easy if you studied for them, and there were only two papers for the semester. Attendance is part of your grade. If you skip any class be sure its not on the final class of the week, theres usually small quizzes these days.
There are so many inconsistent lectures that go over the same material over and over again. The first week, we had a pop quiz on the reading he did not tell us to do, and most everyone received a horrible grade on it. He is very rude to anyone who asks questions and has very few assignments, so if you get a bad grade, you are out of luck.
This was one of the hardest classes I took. I took this to fulfill a category I needed for my major. Never take him, he teaches 5 different topics at once—the notes he has us take in class, our essays, quizzes, and in-class assignments. His notes he takes on board make no sense and the class is super confsuing.
Prof. Cutter is a clever dude. Though I didn't attend very many lectures, the ones I did go to brought me lots of joy. The lectures were always interesting and grabbed my attention. My good grade came from the quizzes and essays we did. There was not very many so don't feel overwhelmed. Overall, I would take this class again; history can be cool.
Prof Cutter is a very interesting professor. I really enjoyed his class and the things we learned, but occasionally lectures would go off topic, grades would take a while to get in, and we did not follow the original outlined assignment schedule. Good class to learn about Latin America, be prepared for a lot of disorganization and inconsistencies.
