He talks very fast. Since i was in a higher level class this may not effect those taking 113 or lower but he does do a lot of lecturing on the theory behind the math. He does still do examples, but whenever you ask a question of him outside class it's all theory.
no common sense or ability to relate to anyone. off in his own crazy world. talks to fast, and isnt helpful or understanding. avoid this man at all costs.
Great Prof: easy tests, will help you out, lots of extra credit, doesn't grade homework!
if i didn't already take a class similiar to his i would be totally lost. gets tougher as the semester passes so be sure to know whats going on at all times... likes to babble on about irrelevant info

He was not a very good teacher...didn't do many examples, didn't engage us...boring...
Hardest course I have ever taken. He talks way too fast and stands in front of the board when he is writing. MUST do homework and go see him outside of class if you do not want to fall behind. I'd recommend taking a different prof for this course!
OH MY. RUN FOR THE HILLS!
Finite Math: got an average of 96% percent on take-home assigments and tests, yet pulled a B- in the class. I assumed he didn't take attendance; looks like I was wrong. Is like most math teachers; in shape, thinks himself full of dry humor, but is pretty lame in the end. Read the textbook.
Oh my god, I was good at math tll I had this class and it all just went downhill. Mumbles incessantly and rambles on about nothing. Hard to follow and half the time, he miswrites problems on the board. Tests are completely out of the blue - HARD, you must do homework even though its not turned in
OH man... just dont take him.

This guy is an absolute idiot! Never in my life have I met someone who is more concerned with the fact that he can do a one fingered pull up then actually explaining the problems. I still haven't learned anything in his class except that he's creepy.
I did better in this class when I would not go to it. He doesn't take attendence, but says something to you the next class if you miss one. VERY hard to understand during class, keep your book out to follow it instead.
He means well and is a nice enough guy but assumes students know too much. He takes too much time explaining things that don't need explaining and then skips over harder concepts. The class moves too fast. Don't take unless you have already taken Calc 2 somewhere else.
He wears his studded belt to class everyday and keeps his mail in his front pocket. He mumbles and, if you are interested in learning, I wouldn't take him.
The class is pretty boring, although when Doug goes off on his tangents, it can be entertaining. Knows his stuff, but it is hard to pay attention the entire class period. Gives take him portions of tests that are almost identical to in class tests and due the same day, making it easier to study. Decent Prof.
WORST PROF EVER! He waited til the last day to post grades after giving a crazy final. The final had nothing to do with what we had learned in the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Hes a really wierd guy but not that difficult. Its boring but if u do the work hes fair about grades.
God, I love this guy. I don't do any homework in this class but am getting a fairly decent grade (I think a B+). He's helpful and he's funny when he goes off on his tangents. He appears to be quite weird at first, but I like him, maybe because I, too, am weird. Do homework, ask questions, and you should be fine as long as math isn't your weakness.
He talks low and fast, and he usually spends the majority of the class working on homework problems from the previous night so he never has time to explain the new section which causes the confusion on homework problems. If you take him, make sure you have money to pay for a tutor. Despite his teaching style, he WILL help you if you ask.
Knows his stuff but gets off track a lot making it hard to get all of the information in during class.
I enjoyed calculus till i took calc 2 from dokken! it was horrible, his examples during class didn't help and the tests were really hard. he hands out study packets for the tests, but they aren't much help. there is no points for homework - and most days i felt like falling asleep in class. I would not recommend him.
When he starts to talk for a while, he gets very confusing and he does not summarize well. Seems like he does not have much of a plan and will just assign random problems for homwork. His notes are basically out of the book. He is funny sometimes and weird other times. Not the best
Dokken is probably the biggest Bad Ass on campus, his teaching however is always behind. Doen't follow much of a plan and you have to do a lot of work outside of class. He can be very entertaining though. I had him for 210 also.
Most worthless professor ever. He doesnt care about his students and does not offer much help, if any at all. He is also incredibly rude and BORING. I really didnt like math to begin with, although I was good at it, but now I just hate it because of him. IF you register with him, please rethink it. He will just make your life more stressful.
Favorite teacher ever! Doug Dokken is the biggest bad ass at St. Thomas. He keeps his mail in his front pocket, and will do sweet body tricks for you as he is a climber. I recommend him to everyone who needs to take a math.
I did horrible in this class. I'm no math genius but even so, I shouldn't have done as bad as I did; he isn't a great teacher. It felt like torture to sit through every class because I had no idea what he was talking about half the time. He's entertaining though, very funny.
He's the biggest badass. Its all about studying the text. I'm not great at math, but took the class to get my finance major. I worked hard and earned a good grade. For those who complain about him... You get out, exactly what you put into this class. Math is complicated, but getting a ticket to the Dougie Dokken show is far superior to other profs
Doug Dokken really is a badass. He is just so damn cool. i would take his class over just to hang out with him everyday. Doug Dokken rules
I would rather have had a retarded monkey in a tuxedo, as my prof. I would have honestly learned more, and had more fun. Listening to him talk is extremely painful. He takes forever to get through one section, I'm talking weeks. I can safely say I did not learn a thing in this class. Avoid at all costs.
Worst prof. I have ever had. Doesn't care about his students or how they do. Hard to understand, can be pretty mean. I have a hard time with math already and this class just made it ten times harder. There is no structure and he often forgets what he assigned and its hard to know what the quiz's and tests are on. Awful. Dont Take Him!
Dokken is kind of an intimidating guy. He doesnt really give a sh*t about things..which is nice sometimes (like for attendance). Some people think he doesnt do a good job at teaching, but i thought he did fine. Maybe because I'm good at math. Hes also kinda funny in a weird way..and grades kinda weirdly
This class was a waste of my time and money. He did not explain problems clear what so ever so if you did not learn the material on your own, the tests were impossible to pass. Do not take him as a professor!
Dude sucks at teaching and doesn't give a care if you do good or not.
Dokken is the man! I don't know what the other people are talking about. Dokken keeps class interesting and his tests are very straight forward. 3 tests a few quizes and a final. Hw is not graded. Take him if you want to have fun!
This class is boring and Dr. Dokken is aware of it. Lots of quizzes, but he lets you drop the three worst scores. Online homework is a hassle and if you go to him for help about it he doesn't really know what to do. In class he is pretty clear and is a really nice guy (ask him to do one of his famous 'one armed pull ups.)
Great prof if you get to know him. Go to his office and talk about what you are working on. Make sure to comment and ask questions in class. Some of the material you'll have to teach yourself, but the majority he will explain well. Funny guy and easy to get along with.
Not helpful. Told me I would not pass his class when I had a C- at midterm. May seem cool at first, but he is more concerned with his own "hobbies" than your grade.
Not a very good course. About 2/3 of the class is spent on reviewing homework problems, and I have to add he's pretty slow at counting on the whiteboard... :/ He is quite a nice and likeable guy though. If you do all the homework, you will surely get an A (and turn up to exams and quizzes). Tests are easy, and he chooses problems that appeared eith
he is the best ever, he teaches step by step
boring! just listening to his voice puts me to sleep. spends the entire class going over problems from last time and then tries to squeeze in lecture in the last 5 minutes of class. unless you want to teach yourself, I wouldn't recommend taking him
an extremely likeable guy, but not the best professor. doesnt explain his methods very clearly, goes over the homework for 3/4 of the class time and it is rather unclear about how he grades tests. on the third test (only) he commented my work was sloppy and subtracted 2 points off each problem O.o. it's pretty easy to get a good grade in his class
Dokken is seriously one of my favorite profs. I've had him for 200, 210, and will have him again for part of 315. He is really helpful if you show an interest in the class, ask questions during class, and visit him during office hours. Take home and in class parts for tests. Take the time to get to know him, he's really awesome! Give him a chance!
Not a bad teacher, pretty easy, if your just looking to get through the class. However, expect to do some work teaching yourself outside of class.
Awful at teaching but easy course. Got wrecked on first couple quizzes. Tests are the quizzes stapled together. Study quizzes when get them back and you'll get As on tests. Learned everything on my own. Unfair points marked off on tests/quizzes. Easy homework points. Drops 3 lowest quizzes. Fight to get points back.
You basically teach yourself, he walks in and flips through the power point untill the end of class.. BUT TAKE GOOD NOTES!! The quizes come from the power points and the test is based on the quizes. Homework points are easy and he drops your three lowest quiz scores.
Not sure why he has so many low ratings- scared me but this was the only time that worked for me. He gives take home tests- and the real test is IDENTICAL usually and offers 20 pts EC. Has review sessions before exams (only 2 and a final) and those are helpful. Easy A if you put in the effort. Don't be scared to take him! I promise you'll be fine
Dokken tries too hard to relate to students. He would spend half of class time talking about something he saw on TV that he wants to relate to the class, otherwise he spends most of the time reviewing homework from last time and doesn't teach new material. Difficult to communicate with, doesn't post grades, overall I'd avoid.
Went in to get help with webassign three times and he never remembered who I was. He doesn't care about anyone. He just goes up there mumbles and rambles on all class and then turns around and says "Kay?" and goes on. Goes through 90% of the PowerPoint in last 30 secs of class Not good not good at all
Probably the smartest person I've ever met. Unfortunately, this makes him hard to learn from, he struggles to go slow enough for the rest of the class. He can be a scatterbrain and isn't very easy to learn from. He gives a lot of homework but if you do it all, you'll do okay on the tests. He's also really funny in a grumpy-old-man kind of way.
I'm a commuter and the days I have the energy to drive to class, I purposefully don't buckle up just hoping for the sweet release of death over going to class. When I do make it to class, I bring a pillow. I also bring a pillow for my pillow in case my pillow falls asleep to this guy. He was inspirational in the way that he inspired me to sleep.
The lecture style of Prof. Dokken is something I would expect in a 100+ person lecture hall, not a 20 student class. There is very little interaction with the students. Expect to learn the class material on your own. I feel like I could not think for myself in this class both in lecture and office hours, it was just watching Dokken work problems.
Dougie's a rude and awkward guy to say the least. He has some anger problems, as he punched Goldy in the face. Sometimes he's a cool guy, like when he gives you the exact same problem that was in the book, but he kind of owes you one because he never taught it to you in the first place. The guy can't do basic Smith like three plus eight.
I have no idea what to think of this guy. The class was impossible, there was so much work and homework that it was a struggle to get it all done (even if you knew the material). He said he doesn't curve but I got a B or C on every test, did the extra credit, and ended the year with an A... so that didn't really make sense.
Professor Dokken is too smart to be a professor. He is very unclear and expects you to be able to follow his very long, difficult examples. It was easier for me to teach the material to myself through webassign and book problems than to listen to him. I only showed up to class when there was homework due or a test.
Professor Dokken talks waaaaay too fast and there are always webassigns and homework due at the end of the week. I had to teach myself using the book and I ended up with an A. The webassign problems are way harder than the tests, the tests are similar to written homework. He gave an extra credit assignment at the end of the semester, which was nice
This is the most homework load I've ever had. Expect long WebAssigns and book work. He only gives two tests and a final, and each of them have a take home component which is almost identical to the actual test. Dokken is one weird dude, and his lectures can get long and confusing at times, but he'll make you laugh every now and then.
I went into his class worried because of negative reviews, but his class is honestly quite entertaining. He works problems in his own little bubble while everyone zones out, but has a weird sense of humor. Lots of homework, written and webassign. Gives a take-home test that is similar to the in class. Attendance is optional.
Dokken is the most condescending, unhelpful professor I have ever had. He rambles in class about unrelated material and upon asking for help, he berates you on why you don't know the material rather than offering clear explanations. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
The material that appears on his tests are no problem. The problem is his homework. First of all, he devotes no time to the homework in class and just expects you to know. Another note to add on the homework is that he does not go over how to do GRADED homework and a huge part of your grade as a whole. You basically teach yourself here.
Lots of quizzes, but they are helpful!
A fairly average guy, super nice. He looks just like Marty McFly mixed with Doc Brown. You'll do fine in his class as long as you keep up with the hw
The homework load wasn't too bad and the tests were extremely easy. You get a week to do the take-home test and then the in-class test is identical. As far as teaching skills go, he's not the best. You will end up teaching yourself. Also, he is not very interesting and everyone in the class just zones out. Would not recommend.
Don't take his class at all costs. He gives un-comprehensible lectures every day.
This class isn't that difficult, there aren't any pop quizzes, and you get a take-home test that is almost identical to the in-class test, BUT in order to learn the material and do well in the class, you will need to teach yourself from the textbook. He struggles with explaining each step and doesn't manage his class time well. I do not recommend.
Professor Dokken gets a bad reputation on here. I enjoy his class and it is very easy. There are a lot of quizzes but those prepare you for the exams. The textbook is terrible and does not teach you well, but Professor Dokken does an adequate job of covering the material. Study the quizzes for the exam and you will be smooth sailing.
Professor Douglas Dokken was a great professor. This was his first time teaching this course so he used the homework assignments that the previous professor made, but made sure to do them all before he taught. So he knows the topic very well. His tests are fairly easy if you study what he talks about the class period before the test. Grades lightly
Avoid him at all costs unless you know how to teach yourself! I got an A in the class, but that was all due to me teaching myself the material, because he can't teach. He constantly makes mistakes on the board and when you ask him questions he makes you feel dumb for not knowing it. You also have to do things his way or you'll lose points. Horrible
Not bad for his first time teaching probability. Naively the tests weren't too bad if you show up in class, do the homework and review the list of problems he does in class. Funny in his own, weird way. "I was going to finish grading your exams this morning, but I got stuck in traffic." (Yes, he actually said this).
He "teaches" all class long but never makes any sense. His tests are easy, but the web assign assignments are awful and he doesn't spend any time in class which is what all the web assign questions are. 10/10 do not recommend unless you wanna sleep in class then reteach yourself everything he attempted to teach the class.
He does not teach the material well. By far the worst professor I've had. He spends a majority of the class doing the proofs for problems you will not cover in the class. He confuses even himself when explaining and solving problems. Run away while you can.
He is an awfully boring teacher who doesn't really teach. I learned it's best not to listen during class, just copy down formulas and teach yourself. He does a lot of example problems which is nice, but you don't ever know how he gets his answers. He is also condescending when you ask questions and very short with his answers.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I am typically a good math student. My strongest subject throughout school. I was in Dokken's class for a couple weeks and dropped. Didn't learn a thing. He expects you to already know the material and teaches each lesson like a brief review. I have not heard one good thing about him. Odd guy too
Not a good teacher but if you work hard you can pass the class. Class is well structured: quiz and homework due every other class, grade calculation is given on the first day so you can predict your grade. Dokken is a hard grader on tests and homework but the tests and quizzes are not that bad if you do the study guides and homework. Final is hard
Dokken is the type of guy who just lectures, and at a pretty fast rate. It can be very hard to follow. On some days you'll leave class even more confused than you were going into the class. Lots of quizzes, and online assignments. I wouldn't recommend him, the class is do able, but not recommended.
Good guy and easy A but if you are a U of M fan do not take.. He hates Goldy!!!!
Dokken was an interesting character from start to finish. His lectures were always very confusing, so the content was easier to learn by reading the textbook or watching videos online. However, the quizzes are done outside of class and the tests aren't too difficult. He's just a really strange guy.
Easy to do well, just know how to do the easier homework problems since his tests are basically the same questions with different numbers. Bring an eraser, he makes a lot of mistakes when working problems in class. Lectures are kind of useless but he's an interesting character.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. He is condescending when answering questions (and you still won't understand after you ask), and assumes that you understand what he is saying (which you never can). I am pretty good at math and I have never been so confused. The actual material is easy to learn, but don't expect to learn from him.
Hes strange and hard to understand at times but hes nice
I had no clue what was going on in math 101 for most of the semester. Dokken does not respond to emails, and will say no most times when asked for examples of what we are learning. Grades aren't posted until the semester is over (seriously, you don't know what your grade is at any given point until final grades are posted).
Hands down the worst class I have ever taken, and this is solely because of the Professor. Speaks in a condescending tone, completely disregards your perspective, and is not understanding whatsoever. He cuts you off before you even finish a question or sentence. Absolutely no makeup quizzes, ever. Honestly painful to have a conversation with.
I had to do 3 quizzes in the hospital because I had procedures during heart treatment and he refuses to allow you to take them any other time. Boring lectures and doesnt understand technology. Only good thing about his class is that what you learn in class is whats on the quiz and tests. Only take this class if you are able to self teach.
Avoid this professor at all costs. Unclear lectures, hard quizzes, stressful tests, not any help outside of class. DO NOT DO IT
The worst math teacher I ever had. He's terrible at explaining things and makes concepts more confusing then they need to be. He's also a harsh grader and will take points off for small mistakes. I always leave his lectures confused about the concepts he taught and the book doesn't help a lot. He had extra credit and helped during office hours tho.
Very rude and doesn't turn his camera on to talk to students one on one.
He definitely wasn't my favorite teacher, but this class was manageable. He didn't explain the material that well and I was lucky that I was already familiar with the material he went over. He isn't the worst teacher, but if you have another option I would take it if I were you.
Professor Dokken is very accessible by email. His lectures in class help a lot for quizzes and exams as the example problems that he goes over are usually the same as on quizzes and exams with different numbers. About 15 quizzes and 3 exams in the course. He also offers extra credit.
In my 15 years of being a student, I have never had an absolutely horrible teacher like that. Dokken was not understanding, very disorganized class and honestly makes the subject harder than it should be. DO NOT TAKE this class if you really want to understand math. I would rate him zero if it was possible!
I didn't skip class once and struggled a lot in this class. He does not turn his camera on in zoom so I have no idea what the guy even looks like. He's not understanding at all and grades harshly for simple mistakes. If you fall behind it is very hard to catch up because only quizzes and tests are graded. Avoid this professor.
The content isn't too hard, but he makes it way harder than it has to be. His lectures are super confusing, and it seems like half the time he doesn't really know what he is talking about. The quizzes were take-home and the exams were just like the quizzes so that made them pretty easy, but it doesn't really feel like you're actually learning much.
Dokken is my hero. His mannerisms inspire me to go to class every day. He is extraordinarily helpful outside of class and is very fun to talk to once you get to know him. Very knowledgeable about all things math, as well as physics and meteorology. The books he chose for the class was excellent and cheap, plus he bought a book for everyone.
Hes a bad teacher. Does not explain the subject well and goes at an absurd pass. Meanwhile all his short lectures are for quizzes the next week when we have a quiz that day for stuff we learned for 30 minutes a week ago. We also have quizzes every class almost.
Overall, as a professor I would say Prof. Dokken is a good guy. He is really goofy and interesting if you get to know him. As for his teaching and class, I used to be a regular A/B math student. I have never struggled so bad with such easy concepts. He complicates this class so much (fast pace) & have quizzes everyday and he lectures it the day of.
I love math, but this class was not good. Prof. Dokken should not be teaching. He is super hard to understand when he speaks. He gives a quiz right after introducing something (no time to do the homework or understand) and is inaccessible. I asked for help and was told he couldn't meet and that I should just study harder.
