Professor Epperson is above all one of the greatest teachers you'll ever have. He's very helpful during office hours, go through things step-by-step and he's a new teacher from Cal Poly. Go to POLYRATINGS.COM and type in EPPERSON. You'll get more reviews.
He is really cool and educated. When he's teaching, it sounds like your listening to one of your friends.
lectures are boring. spends the whole lecture time working on 2 to 3 problems that no one undestands. labs are way too long and he just lingers around w/ his lunch. hard to follow his steps bc he skips steps and doesn't know his physics. really bad teache
no one understands what comes out of his mouth. quizzes are stupid. lecture: drag homework problems on and on. slow writer. slow explainer. lab: pointless and it's soo long. stay away. stay away. STAY AWAY. you've been warned. no one undestands what comes out of his mouth.
Prof. Epperson is a nice guy who truly wants his students to learn & is very helpful when asked Qs. PowerPoint presentations good & well-organized (need spell check though). That said, he seems inexperienced; lectures are baffling to slower students & too basic to faster ones. Middle will do fine.
he's a great physics teacher with his knowledge on the concept very well. he's smart and nice. take advantage of his office hours, cos that's where i learned the most of my physics! he have the patient to teach you, look over your exams to give you a few more points, and happy you give you hints fo
Really, the babble that comes out of this professor's mouth is incomprehensible. Likewise with what he writes on the board. A weeder teacher. Has a PhD, and taught engineering physics at Cal Poly - so he expects all his students to have the same caliber. Had a 4.0 before this class, and now I don't.
UNBEARABLY SLOW. Takes his sweet time writing on the board and not just key points. everything that comes out of his mouth during lecture goes on the board. Not a stickler about homework. Takes attendance only at lab sections. I ended up dropping because it was too slow.
A really nice guy, but doesn't give out many A's, worked my butt off for a B...His tests can been confusing, but he did do some curves. I hear the nighttime teacher is easier, open book tests and things...
this guy is great! he knows his physics quite well. writes everything on the board to make it clear for those whose english is their second language and explains everything very clear. quizzes are hard but they are reasonable. diff. teacher for lab tho. nice nice nice.
He admitted several times during the semester that he hasn't taken or looked at oceanography since high school. He also would take the class completely from the previous primary teacher who taught it and would just copy him. Often times in lab he didn't even know the answers. Stay away.
Epperson is a very nice and caring teacher. Ocean 1 was a semi-easy class. Grades on curve. Should do homework and exercises to improve grade. Tests can be confusing, but they are multiple choice. Good lectures, which follow homework. Does not take attendance, but gives quizzes. Some announced and some not.
I struggled in this class due to the hard material. I did have a hard time following lectures BUT HE HAS GREAT OFFICE HOURS AND WILL HELP YOU WITH REVIEW SESSIONS BEFORE EVERY TEST. The review sessions saved MY LIFE :P He really does take CARE if you ask for HELP!would have bombed this class otherwise(but thats cuz the material was hard for me).
Sometimes explanations are unclear, but overall a good professor. He's very nice. Go to office hours and he does a way better job explaining things. Pretty easy grading policy, usually curves, and he drops a low test score. Exams are problems like the online homework or examples in class. Lectures in lab though, plus a lot of labs are boring.
PRETTY GOOD TEACHER, TEST ARE JUST ONLINE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS, HE DROPS YOUR LOWEST GRADE AND LETS YOU HAVE AN OPEN NOTE, OPEN BOOK FINAL. DEFINETLY RECOMMENDED FOR PHYSICS

Great teacher, tests based on hw problems, no suprises. Drops lowest test score and is VERY helpful if you use office hours/private tutoring that he provides.
Terrible! spent the first 3 weeks of class staring at stars in the planetarium rather than learning. My lab class (taught by Nelson) was 2 weeks ahead of my lecture! He is so bad, that the average exam score on all 3 of them, were all F's!!! So bad, he had to curve all of them at the end of the semester to avoid failing everyone and getting fired
Great class. He gave whole class 100% on labs and homework. Dropped lowest quiz (there were about 6). Exchange lowest exam grade for project. Go to class and show interest and get good grade! Really nice guy!
attend lectures! he explains a few basic concepts which can be applied to most problems - ie take good notes. text not needed that much. totally willing to help explain stuff. easy grader. seems like he enjoys what he does. labs were fairly easy.
took his class during his first semester teaching at WVC. i think his lectures were very clear, copy everything down from the board. labs sucks. he once told me that he failed his first college physics class and he still got his PhD in physics. very nice sense of humor, would love to teach more if have more time. remember to take notes in class!
Very helpful and nice.
Dr. Epperson is kind and self-effacing. He knows his physics cold and is an algebra magician. Anticipates where students may hv problems and makes sure to guide the class accordingly. For an "A" take note of his "asides" in class - they can be the conceptual questions on exams - and redo the problems that he does in class. Doug is great; take him.
Mr. Epperson is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He takes the complex world of physics and simplifies it in a way so that anyone can understand. Very good teacher. His tests are a little difficult when it comes to the concept questions, but if you listen and take notes you will do well. He drops one test, that includes the final.
I was in his Astro 11L class. He is a really nice guy. I felt like the activities really helped my performance in the Astro 11 course, which was one of the hardest classes that I have taken, so I needed all the help I could get. I would highly recommend him for Astro 11L.
Mr. Epperson was a wonderful Physics teacher. He definately loves what he does. He is ALWAYS willing to answer your questions and willing to stick with you until you understand it. He is extremely helpful in his office hours. If you ask him questions or go to his office hours when you're confused than you can get so much more out of the class.
teacher is mundane, and not very helpful. The material is already tough and taking this teacher made passing the class nearly impossible!
Doug is one of the best teacher in WVC! He makes an intense winter class so much fun and interesting. He is knowledgeable, patient and so nice! Class is not easy, lots of reading. Study hard and u can succeed. I have learned so much from this class. Thanks Mr. Epperson!
Epperson is a nice, honest, down to earth guy. His lectures are informative, and he answers questions extremely well. The class isn't super easy, but 80% and up is an A, so you have some room there. Reading the text helps alot. I recommend him!
Mixed Bag. Frequently late and a somewhat clumsy in doing the math (class corrects him occasionally). On the other hand, he's the model "teacher in love with his job!" He's eager and excited to help, great at simplifying complex concepts, and enjoys being given challenges. The main down is that you often get a long answer to a simple question.
He is very nice and honest. explains hard concepts very clearly. alitle bit tricky eaxams but very fair grader.I took his class in summer and it was fun!I definately will recommand if you want to learn and get a good grade, but keep in mind you have to put some efforts too, at least do the homeworks!
This guy ROCKS! Clearly loves his field, very smart but fair and laid back. Cool lectures held in the planetarium. Takes extra time to clearly and thoughtfully answer any question (no matter how dumb!). Study up (this is college folks!) and you'll do well.
I took this class last summer, and the teacher is a very nice, helpful and interested teacher, and as long as you take good notes, go to class, and put in minimal study effort, you should do well.
Seemed unorganized. Took weeks to hand back scantron tests. Took days to send promised study guides, and cancelled multiple tests via email the night before. Most students did not come to lectures - just showed up for tests. Only upside was that he drops the lowest test and curves all of them to boost his test averages.
Very Easy Class! I cannot rate too much on the content taught, as this was his first year teaching this particular subject. He loves his job, he is very forgiving and is always willing to help. The class encourages group discussion. He grades on attendance (doesn't always take roll). He does ramble on a bit, but teaches to understand. Great Guy!
very scatterbrained and unorganized. lectures are painfully boring. i felt bad for the guy because he is interested in the material but the class barely participated. He isn't very good at lectures and gets behind on stuff too frequently for my taste. Drops the lowest test grade and gives a curve on every test. cake, but boring cake
I have to say physics is not my thing but I needed the class as a pre-req. The class I took was a very general ed class and the teacher was gracious enough to know that we werent going on to be physicists or engineers and made it easy to do well in the course. Very nice guy and very passionate about physics.
Doug is a great guy! He loves the subject and it shows! He's adorable. He's very understanding & helpful. I struggle w/ the material but he's more than happy to help out however he can, including spending 45+ min in office hours going over a single concept w/ you that you're not getting. I TOTALLY recommend him. I want to take another class w/ him!
He tried really hard to get the class interested in astronomy because he's really into it, but all he did was read off lecture slides and it was so boring. He's a nice teacher, but not worth taking the class. Material was really tough.
This is a Very Boring and Confusing Teacher with hard tests. Stay Away from his classes!
He's a really nice guy! He gives his students a good amount of attention and is pretty helpful. His lectures are very interesting even though it's on my least favorite topic. Little to no book use, lecture slides are online, and he reviews for his exams the day before. Super easy class and actually kind of cool topic :)
I would not recommend this teacher for taking physical science. The lectures were quite boring and he didn't seem very passionate about what he was doing. I almost felt like he made fun of his own work and encouraged us to find it uninteresting. He's a nice guy and everything but was unorganized and hard to follow.
I don't normally take classes outside the university, but wow. Epperson gives community college professors a great name. Very clear lectures. No real wasted time. Homework not required, but needed if you want to do well. Just four midterms since the final is a midterm. Wish he taught more physics classes at WV. Highly recommend.
Doug is a great professor. He grades well and gives out voluntary homework. Very awesome prof and is funny. I wish he taught at SJSU.
Prof Epperson is seriously awesome. Took this class over summer with absolutely no intro in physics but passed with an A. He teaches exceptionally well and grades fair. TAKE HIM!
Epperson is so scattered it drives me crazy even when he's teaching which is rare it just sounds like rambling everything I've learned in that class was on my own in the book or through online tutorials.
Doug is cool. VERY easy class. Not mandatory attendance. You have to do online hw and after doing it, you're pretty much ready for the tests. Tests are easy. 2 questions are worth 10 points each, and he tells you those before hand so if you know them you got the points. Gotta fake go to a star party.. easy class overall
The good is you can definitely pass the class without attending lecture. Just do the online homework and study the study guides. The bad is he is very boring and disorganized. The final is cumulative and he didn't post the study guide, or hand back the last exam until THE DAY BEFORE the final.
Prof. Epperson is a very laid back professor, he spells out at the start of class that if you study and do your homework than there is no need to be in class. He uses class for observation as well as informing. He relies heavily on technology. Homework is online with a mandatory fee to access the work. Exams are Scantrons and two essay questions.
Great professor, very clear! Also likes to get into cinematics, which helps class go by. Very nice professor. His exams are hard, but only he written part(he is very specific) But over all, you wouldn't be sorry you took him. Nice, easy grader, but you earn your grade because you actually remember what he says.
Mr. Epperson is the best physics teacher. He is such a cool guy! I never liked physics because the material is too difficult to comprehend, but he made it fun and interesting, making me want to learn it. No quizzes; just midterms and a final. Grades are curved. I got an A.
Such a great teacher. He is lecture is fun and the tests are easy if you do your HW.
Epperson is super nice, but good lord is he confusing. He talks a LOT and does not make things clear at all. You can tell he really loves it, but he's just not very good at communicating. The tests are pretty hard, but his grading is a little different so 80% and above is an A. Also fair warning he shows up 5-15 minutes late almost every class.
Doug is simply awesome. He couldn't be any clearer on the lectures and quizzes/tests. I always look forward to attending his class. It helps a lot to print the lecture slides from ANGEL and bring them in. You can just follow along and add extra notes to them. There can be multiple quizzes in the same week but they're usually very easy to pass.
Super interesting class. Astro majors, go for it. He's passionate and helpful. So easy going w/students, almost a pushover. 3 Tests & Final. 2 Videos w/?'s. 10 quizzes. Star Party, no hw. He's a really genuine nice guy I wish his class wasn't SO difficult. TONS of material and ?'s are SO specific. You basically can't miss a thing. Good challenge.
What everyone said about Doug on ratemyprofessor is true. His class is REALLY easy if you study. His tests are all questions from the homework and quizzes. If you study both, you have a good shot to get an A. He also makes it that 80%+ is an A, 70%+ is a B, 60%+ is a C, etc. ONLY minus is he loves astronomy which makes his lectures long.
EASY A. 80% and up is an A. You can easily pass his class by studying the quizzes and lecture slides. Final is all multiple choice questions/short answers on previous tests. Did not attend class much because it was all online and his lectures are super boring and I still received an A. NO TEXTBOOK
Doug is an awesome guy that completely understands that most of us are taking the course so that we can transfer to a UC. As a result, he teaches to the test and makes sure that the students who care are going to do well and accomplish their goals. The labs are a little old and could use some refreshing - very relaxed labs though unlike other ones.
Great and passionate teacher. Goes above and beyond to help students
Super caring and knowledgable teacher! Took ASTRO as a GE with a lab and it's definitely doable. You have to put in more work than you would think, but at the end of the day its 10x easier than chem or physics. 80% and higher is an A, he really wants you to pass. Lectures are super long and boring, but its worth it
Very accessible for office hours. It takes awhile for him to grade and hand back tests. A test is graded using the 4 pt method, where you have a range ie miss 7-11 pts you get a 3.33. Our grade was calculated from 3 tests, a lab, and a final. Lab everyone gets a 4. If you do poorly on one exam it can really affect your grade. Homework is encouraged
Goes off on tangents a lot. First time teaching PSCI in a while so he didn't have his slides or exams ready on time mostly. Good guy, okay teacher. Took off lowest homework, quiz, and exam.
All of the content you need to know is in his lectures (no textbook reading required) and he always gives examples of problems (which show up on the test). He explains concepts in a straightforward way. Lecture is pretty dense with info tho, so you should always pay attention. Homework is really important to do even though its optional.
Doug was probably my favorite professor at West Valley. Attend lecture, to study do the problems he did in class and some of the homework problems . Attend office hours when you can. And you can probably get an A. There is not a teacher I would rather take physics from. He is so helpful and nice.
The best physics teacher at West Valley. Took him for 4B and 4C, and taking him for 4D this semester. Very smart professor and lectures are super interesting as long as you are invested in the subject. Your grade is determined by 4 exams, 3 during the semester and 1 final. Final is weighed the same as the other 3. Easy grader, clear policies.
Doug is the best physics professor. Lectures are super organized and easy to follow. Cares about students really understanding the subject. Study guides are provided before exams so students know exactly what to study. I really appreciated the time he took to organize lectures and practice problems. Lab: show up and pass. Homework isn't mandatory.
Office hours are SUPER HELPFUL. Epperson works through the problems with students after class, and you can also ask him which specific type of questions will be on the exam. Really easy class as long as you practice the questions and attend lab. If you attend office hours you'll never fall behind.
Great lectures
Professor Epperson is one of those teachers who is very sweet and caring. Even though this class is supposed to be taken in person, he provided good materials to help his students do their labs. He is very lenient with late work and really wants his students to succeed. He will always help a student who doesn't understand the lecture.
This was by far the best physics class experience I've ever had. The professor is super straight forward with his questions on tests. Which makes it easy to problem solve. He gives great feedback and holds himself accountable for any misunderstandings. Definitely take his class
Really nice guy. He's very thorough in his lectures and explanations and is very reasonable. Does a bunch of practice problems in class. The homework isn't collected or graded either, which which for me meant to never do it and just wing the tests. Saves a bunch of time. Overall very easy.
OK choice. I think the class would be much better and interesting in person. Lectures were boring, but he explained everything clearly and in-depth, just made it kinda boring. 80% and up is an A, and he gives lots of study material and many things make up your grade so it isn't hard to get a good grade, but the lab content was confusing and hard.
He loves what he teaches! Mandatory Lecture and Lab but if you attend/participate, youll pass! Quizzes often but you have infinite tried to get 100%. Exams are similar to quizzes. Overall, super easy A!
Not an interesting class, but very very easy. The lectures were long and boring and I think it would be 10x more interesting in person. Graded very leniently. Professor seemed a bit disorganized. 80% and up is an A too which makes it even easier, but I barely learned anything because it was so boring, but if you really really wanted to you could.
He's a great teacher--study and you'll be fine!
This class is probably the best choice to fulfill the science with a lab GE. The lectures and lab were right after each other, so it was like meeting twice for 3 hours. The labs are almost always in groups, so be prepared to talk with your classmates. The only hw is probs classwork you didn't finish. He will push back dates if needed. Very nice guy

I took D. Epperson Online during Covid-19 for his Astro 01+Lecture. He is honestly an amazing, understanding teacher. He evaluates the work he gives you like labs and will adjust any due date for any circumstance. He is so informed on Astro its INSANE! Take notes on lectures because you get lecture quizzes with only one try!!
One of the best teachers I've had. Genuinely cares about what he teaches and his students. I took this online and you can easily look back at his lecture vids and go through them. Helps as much as he can, a great teacher.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! he understands that his class is tricky and makes it as comfortable as possible for his students! TAKE HIS CLASS, you wont regret it!
He is a great teacher who cares more about his students learning and gaining value from his classes rather than just giving you a grade letter.
Doug was the most laid back professor I had this past semester. His lectures are non-mandatory but I still suggest showing up to get familiar with the material because it can get challenging, it is also important for labs too. I felt comfortable with the workload and not too overwhelmed which I thought was very important.
You only had to listen to lecture and do practice problems. Even if you dont do amazing on the quizzes and tests he grades leniently and has make up problems. As long as you participate in this class it is nearly impossible to fail. Would take him again for sure. Also, very relaxed and nice guy.
Professor Epperson clearly cares about his class, but his classroom management and lecturing needs work. Plenty of people fell asleep during lecture throughout the semester. His grading is a bit of a mess, he never mentioned when quizzes were being posted to take or were due. He's extremely flexible about work submission and attendance.
I have never learned physics like this before! Supper great and caring, for summer class we didn't have to submit any hws and tests were mostly from what he would solve in class! Take him, he is amazing and I had a lot of fun in his class!
Professor Douglas is one of the best professor I've ever had, he very nice guy and caring. Take him! I'm going to take his Weather and Climate class in next seamster.
I failed PHYS2B at my university and felt so stupid. I decided to take it at WVC with Doug because I had him for 2A and got a B. I excelled in his class because he cares about his students understanding the material than about making it hard on them. It encouraged me to participate and I was better for it. Take this professor!
He cares about his students but isn't all there. The class gets repetitive worksheets with mistakes and misses planned activities, yet he talks about doing similar activities with other classes. Can take up to a month to grade assignments and frequently cancels office hours. Take the class for an easy A but not if you enjoy the material.
Not great. Not bad. I can't say I really learned anything but it was an easy A.
His lectures may be a little boring, because he can go on tangents, but he makes his quizzes and tests very clear. He gives multiple chances on most quizzes, so class averages on them were always A's because you got unlimited chances. It really is an easy A unless you completely skip all his classes.
(Took this class in Fall of 2021) Literally a god-sent teacher! He helped me with so many assignments past the "due date." The work was not challenging, but a little bit more intensive. I thoroughly enjoyed his class! He is the best astronomy teacher ever! Made it a worthwhile fun semester! Lots of extra credit opportunities as well!
Dr. Epperson is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. In PHYS 4A, we had seven equally-weighted quizzes with no midterm or final, as well as several labs and a few homework assignments. Definitely take this class!
I am so glad I took summer physics with Doug, he is the GOAT! Great lectures, no homework, clear guidelines, as long as you participate in lab and understand the concepts you'll be fine. I especially like how there is no finals - instead there are 7 small exams on each topic. He definitely made the daily 7am class bearable.
Very forgiving grader and a good lecturer. Sometimes late to put in grades but if you pay attention and read the study guide you'll get an A. Also very friendly guy with some interesting stories in lectures and will answer any questions if you approach him during office hours.
Solid lectures and very forgiving tests. I felt like I learned a lot without feeling too stressed.
super chill and laidback professor, willing to answer questions. exams are not too difficult or long.
Totally easy class, he wants to help you succeed and it shows. Lots of quizzes and tests but you have multiple attempts and all are online, and the feedback is great. W professor
Super chill professor. Lectures are recorded/photographed and posted on canvas. Labs usually don't take up the whole 3 hours. Exams are every 2 weeks but are only 1-4 problems. During lectures, practice problems were gone over and solved. Those types of problems are almost the same ones for the exam, just slightly different.
Great teacher. Friendly and chill. Tests are not difficult and is accessible.
Best physics professor- willing to sit down to explain the conceptual side of anything from velocity to inertia to friction to anything in and out of class. Doig
Mr. Epperson brings an absolute light of positivity every day. He loves the content as well as teaching, and you can feel it even in a night class. He is understanding of his students and does everything he can to support them. I would recommend him for both Physics as well as his Astronomy courses.
Caring professor. Amazing teaching style. He will make sure you understand concepts, the course load is very manageable and sets you up to understand STEM topics that are very important. Lenient on grading which is a plus, and understands students have other obligations. Take his classes, he is experienced and will teach you well and show integrity
Can't say enough good things about Doug. He is a positive and caring person, a great teacher, and passionate about his craft. He is easily approachable if you don't understand a certain concept and is easy to get ahold of outside of the classroom. Other than that, his tests usually have a curveball on them, but he's also a pretty lenient grader.
very very kind to every student! super flexible. had some family emergencies this semester which caused him to miss the last 2 weeks of class, but left that material off the final exam. wants all his students to pass! can be forgetful sometimes though
He is amiable teacher and caring teacher
Chillest professor I've ever had yet I still learned a lot. Lectures are in the planetarium so I always wanted to go. Very light homework and easy online tests.
:) PLEASE TAKE PROF. EPPERSON! He makes learning fun because he's passionate about his instruction. All the assigned material are always related to the lectures and super helpful for the exams. He genuinely wants to see you do well & also provides accessible office hours! Hands Down, one of the BEST and most lenient professors at West Valley.
Doug is a smart guy who wants his students to pass and makes life easy for you. Assignments can be submitted late, doesn't care about attendance, no tricks or games, quizzes/tests are direct from slides, all lectures and lecture work/answers posted on canvas, funny, lighthearted, EASY. Good class for easy credits/gpa boost, also really cool!!
Homework is optional and can likely get an A without doing them if you understand the material enough during the lectures. He doesn't care about attendance(though you should be attending them), lets you turn in work late for full credit, labs always take a small amount of time, and lets you do corrections to get back 25/100 point exams.
understood that many people were taking this course for ge credits, but still gave interesting and fun lectures. super easy grading and a lot of test questions are taken directly from quizzes
Take notes on his lectures. He is super nice and really cares about his students passing. If you make friends with him and go to office hours he helps a lot. If you get a bad grade on a test you can do a makeup exams. He has an exam every two weeks and he says he is gonna do quizzes for lecture and lab but never got to either. Labs are fun too.
Professor Douglas is an excellent instructor who makes complex topics accessible. While his tests can have a few surprises, he's a fair grader. Attending lectures and using unstuck AI for study prep really helps.
Doug presents the information in Physics, a notoriously difficult subject, in a way that's easy to digest and understand. Labs are engaging and fun, and typically never take up the entire three hours. Take if you need a science credit, I'd do this any day over intro to biology. I took this class to fill an IGETC requirement. No regrets.
Doug is one of the best professors I've ever taken. Even when his summer course is so early in the morning, his lectures kept me energized and intrigued by the content the taught. He is caring, knowledgeable, and a fair grader. Exams are similar to worksheet/homework problems. I highly encourage attending his office hours when you can.
