He's very easy to understand and cares about his student's success. I think that he is one of the best professors at John Jay. He seem to know alot about Philsophy.

Good guy, very reasonable. Very knowledgeable in philosophy. Class not too hard, one final paper, and final exam. Always available for assistance. Real world examples. I left the class with an appreciation for philosophy. Plays jammin' music before class and during breaks.

He is very funny & provides a great amount of clarity for dense philosophical arguments. He really makes you think about your own views without judgement and leaves room for you to justify/argue your own points. He seems really interested in who his students are, the music is great, plays movie cl

the exams are based on 3 take home papers need to do 5 pages each. A lot of reading is required to get these papers done. Topics are fairly complex. Class seems easy at first but you have to put in work in order to get a good grade.

PROFESSOR FICEK IS THE BEST. I HAD HIS CLASS FOR THE FALL SEMESTER ON A SATURDAY AND IT WAS THE BEST CLASS I HAVE HAD AT JOHN JAY. HIS CLASS CONSIST OF PLENTY OF READING. HE DID NOT GIVE US ANY TEST OUR GRADE CONSISTED ON A PAPER OF 5 PAGES AND THE FINAL. I PASSED HIS CLASS WITH AN A.

Professor Ficek is a nice teacher and very helpful. He is considerite with deadlines and makes the class interesting. He is also a fair grader.

Prof. Ficek is with out a doubt IMHO one of John Jay's leading intellectuals. Critical thinking and analysis skills develop as a part of the course for the rest of your college career. Assignments & class participation are easy if you do the reading.

Stop all the whining slackers! This man is a great professor. Do the readings before class discuss them in class and there is no problem. Philosophy is about discussion you morons. He is very knowledgeable and clears up all the complicated questions with ease. I got an A by doing the work 2 papers 1 final. Know your stuff and its great and an A+.

He was amazing... I left that class a changed person and better for it... he makes you analyze yourself and really looka t who you are and what you stand for... his quizzes are based on the readings so you must read!!! his papers were based on our insight... Taken for Africana Philosophy, great professor. Africana philosophy is his specialty, so if you have an interest in this type of class definetly take him. There are only two papers to hand in eight pages or more each, period. Class discussion is what he looks for, debate on the works which you must read is the main part of this class. Very clear.

this professor changed my life. i learned so much, and also learned to eat a sandwich while taking notes, which is harder than it sounds. also, he always wears cool pants.

This is 1 of the best professors in JJ. I always sat in the bach, never calles on students.Gives great interpretations on arguements made by scholors 4 and against God. He's a great professor, he explains everything to you.He's funny, just a great personality. You are allowed to used your notes for your quiz and 10mins on the midterm and final. Take this class if you're not really interested in philosophy, but have to take it,he'll give you an interest into it.

He is an amazingly intelligent proffessor given his young age. I actually just wonder how much he studies to know everything he does. Very well spoken. The only way you can fail is if you don't study, just as in any other class. Recomend him 100%. P.S. Good guy. ;).

This prof. Is beyond amazing. Very easy going, mature and respectful, but funny at the same time. His clarity is crystal clear. I never thought I would get the grade i got since i did poorly on my midterm, but I did the extra credit and I guess i did good on my final. Extremely amazing. Very professional and educated. Great professor. Uses text a lot and requires reading prior to class (as it should be). I took the writing intensive version and was pleasantly delighted. Should you not read, he will ask what your opinion of the classes discussion, thus far, was. Pay attention. Interesting topics covered.

I am not one of his friends. He is a great professor, he is very intelligent and I would definitely recommend him. Those who were unhappy, were not dedicated. This Prof. is approachable and sincere.

Class was a joke, I was asleep most of the time and got a perfect A on his class, Most of the time i spent studying for chem or bio. He gives 10 quizzes and midterm and final. 10 minutes to "cheat" off your notes. Easy A, GPA booster, would take again. Also very funny guy and jokes a lot.

Great professor. He does his best to make the subject matter interesting. Keep up with the readings and any writing, and you will do fine. You are expected to do the readings before class, then the class time is mostly used for discussion about the previous reading.

GREAT PROFESSOR!!he stimulates the class, very dynamic, he provides great examples. YOu will really learn with him if you are interested..not a tough grader.I have taken him twice and I love him!

I have to say i was worried about this class. Dont get me wrong i pulled a lot of hrs for this class so I got what i deserved (A), but the entire semester was a little frustrating. Put it this way, prepare to spend some time at the writing center! Not that it is a bad thing. It will be beneficial to you too.

I think he is fine. Not easy, so you have to read. You have to ask him questions and participate in class discussions. To me this class is very challenging. We have 5 reading responses, a 10 page final paper, and a final exam. Again, he is not easy. But i have to say he is one of the best among philosophy professors at JJC.

He is very understanding, respectful .Great sense of humr. His examples and explanations are crystal clear. He gives six quizzes and drops the lowest. He will let you use your notes for the quiz but not the actual text. Two paper assignments and a final exa. He is really good. You sure will miss out on philosophy. He is a must take!!!!

6 quizzes, drops the lowest, comprehensive final. If it's your kinda thing, go for it. The guy has a great sense of humor, and he's very open-minded. And he takes the time out to explain things you don't understand, definitely recommend this professor.

This Was an Africana Course. This is his Speciality, so if you're interested, take him and I guarantee you will learn alot! Two 5-pagers and a one-10 pager research paper with an outline seperatley. 10 take home quizzes.TRUST ME, THIS PROFESSOR IS VERY INTELLIGENT AND HELPFUL BEYOND LIMIT.HE WOULD STAY LATE AFTER CLASS AND RESPONDS TO EMAILS QUICKL

3 text book required, only one main one. 6 quizzes,(open notes) drops the lowest. two papers, anda final exam. Very intelligent Professor. Love the way he teaches, He gives you real-world and TV>Show examples to relate it to the discussion in class, and everything starts to make sense. Very young and brilliant! take him, won't regret at all.

He is very experienced in his field and he shows it in the class room.. Everytime he's upbeat ansd interesting. When describing the experience of the different between a highschool prof. and a college prof. My example would have to be Prof. Ficek because he is amazing.....

Awesome professor. Made a law and ethics class very enjoyable. explains things clearly. there are 2 little books to read (which u must get)& some readings on e-reserve. gives take home quizzes which are easy. class discussions were awesome too. two 5pg papers and one 10pg paper at the end. not to mention he looks like wolverine from x-men! lol!

Amazing!!!!! He gives 5 books to read and 5 papers to write all already in the syllabus so you have time to do it and know what to expect. Take home final and he always is engaged and makes you want to read the books. Great Professor best for Philosophy

I took him a few semesters back and I forgot to rate him! He's so awesome, it's true. He makes sure you understand everything and yes there are a number of readings and essays but they aren't hard at all they're mostly based on your opinion. I failed phil the semester before and got a A in his class! Take him!!

Ficek is very motivated to teach philosophy. Demonstrates his knowledge very well. Before taking him, I had no interest in phi, but after the second class this professor hooked me and I became fascinated with philosophy. I highly recommend Ficek. His motivation and personality attracts students to come to class. He is a very good professor. :-)

I recomend Ficek as a professor, he seems to be hard for some people but that is only because that person is not ready for college.His motivation is exelent and knows how to explain things very well, I just found out he also teaches at bmcc.If a person wants to get a good grade in his class all that is required is to do the work with good quality.

He knows philosophy, but he is very boring. He lectures but is a fair grader. short quizzes, 2 paper (grammar and punctuation needs to be on point)

Hes great. Cool person and interesting lectures. He does expect a lot from your papers and they have evrything to do with the readings. Not boring.

Ficek is awesome. He loves Johnny Cash. He is verry insiteful, I loved him and everyone else does too. He expects of you to prove to him that you understand the reading through 2 simple papers a few simple one question quizzes and a pretty simple final exam. He is a great person to get to know and very straight to the point. Philosophy rocks!

One of these professors that gives out a sheet so you could write your name to prove that you were there, even though if you were sleeping. He won't get to know you or your name. His grading is weird. You will get all your quizzes back after 2 month if you get them at all , so you don't really know how you are doing.

Real good teacher. Just making sure to take your notes just in case of a pop quiz. Has awesome hair.

If you have little interest in Philosophy, but are considering trying it out, take him. His lectures are crystal clear so if you have no idea what you read for hw, he will make it totally understandable in the next class. Highly intelligent, funny, nice. The short papers he assigns help you understand the topics which is good prep for the final.

Actually took his course Spring12. He gives you the grade you deserve so just do all the work & immerse yourself in the class. Also gives extra credit which is a plus. Will say attendance is important. I took the class at 8am & found it hard to make it on time. Could be why I didn't get an A instead but still more than satisfied w/ the experience.

Professor FICEK is AWESOME! I love his teaching skills. He is very clear with his work. He does not ask for textbooks. He gives a quiz every class to keep you on track and asks for 2 essays. Super simple. I recommend him to EVERYONE! I loved my class. He is very cool!

Professor Ficek is amazing! I took his class because it was mandatory for my school. I enjoyed it so much, that I'm not minoring in Philosophy and take as many courses with him as possible. If you show an interest in the course, the reading and work will seem easy. Great professor and an even better person!

Professor Ficek made me fall in love with Philosophy all over again. He makes everything so simple that even an infant can write a philosophical paper under the teaching of the great Ficek. Ficek is a very open minded down to earth professor. The grades very fairly and is willing to help you along the way as long as you reach out to him. 3 6-8 page papers and 10 open notebook pop quizzes (Do the reading and take notes). As long as you support your arguments you'll do great in this course.

loved this professor. we have discussions in this class instead of lectures. only gives 2 4-5 page paper. no text books. all materials on his website. very understanding. as long as you read the material. you'll get an A.
