Very organized, very funny. I wasn't interested in philosophy when I started this class, but he made it easy to go to class. Hard to make an A, but easier to make a B
Unless you are very interested in Philosophy and Ethics the class may be pretty easy. He gives daily readings and quizzes..personally my brain hurts everytime I leave that class.
Professor Fishel takes what many conisder an uniteresting class and at end of term makes one introspective. His purpose is to make you think and build good arguments. Tests are not easy as they are all essay. Take good notes, activly participate and you will do fine
Self Aborbed, he needs to be the God of the classroom. Any opinions contrary to his will result in a lower grade. Cannot take critisim.
Mr. Fishel wants you to pass the class just as much as you do and is willing to help you after class to make sure you know the material. Hot? You better believe it:)
Never gives up on anybody and is willing to spend extra time to make sure you understand.
An AMAZING teacher and not too bad looking either ;)
Very good teacher. Study hard for your test because there is only 2 test! Likes to help his students and really cares about you!
Interesting class, pretty hard though, almost like a math class. There's daily homework though it's for practice and not graded. Do it anyway. Daily quizzes, tests are easy if you study. Prof is really nice and helpful, great class discussions.
I've had Doug as a teacher for Phil 100 and 203, and I still want to take him again. He makes class interesting and fun. He always has stories and youtube videos that relate to our lessons. The readings can be hard, but if you dont do them, you'll be completely lost and have a poor quiz score. But he's a great teacher and I defintely reccommend him
This is not an easy class as there really are no concrete answers. I took it online this summer. Prof. Fishel was very helpful when I needed it. I do recommend him.
Great teacher!
awesome!!!!
This was a required class. He is an interesting instructor.
His class is interesting. There is not a lot of written work assigned.
His class is very intersting.
He rarely interacts on the discussion board and his powerpoints are the worst! Uh...Um... If you are having trouble understanding anything - you get "re-read the material".
If you like somone who love to teach and is passionate about it and you, then this is one hot teacher!
Great class, great teacher. He taught in such a way that even someone with moderate ADD could keep moderately focused. He taught by doing, which was great. He went over the book a little bit, then spent the rest of the period doing exercises. He also had a hilariously strange sense of humor. I loved the class.
Very understanding teacher. Wants you to understand the material so ask all you want. Ethics can be hard to understand, but his class gives you a lot a material to help you. The assignments boost your grade. So do all of them!!!
I took Logic 200 and I could not have had a more wonderful teacher. I came into this class thinking it would be so boring but he made this class interesting and made me want to come to class to learn. He is willing to help you whenever you struggle and need the extra help. He takes the time to make sure you understand before he goes on. Recommend!
took this class online. If you read the material that you are supposed to you will do fine! Your grade is based only on discussion board questions, tests, and papers. If you do not read your material you will be screwed for the papers and tests. So read and you'll be ok!
Fishel is pretty awesome! He has a great wealth of knowledge, and is a nice, laid-back guy. Don't take him online, just in person! He is willing to revise your paper before you submit it! He is a good teacher!
Very little feed back. Vague and cryptic with help given when asked. Demanded large amount of work completed, yet waited till the last day of semester to know any grade on any assignment done. had to complete this class as my senior year requirement, WRONG TEACHER to take. absolute worst teacher of my entire academic career. DO NOT TAKE!!
Great teacher. Funny, smart, and accepting and tolerant of all suggestions and views. Would definitely recommend.
Had to write three papers, participate on some forum post and take a midterm and final. Midterm and final were all short answer/essay. Gives everything needed to succeed. Slow to get back to you and grade, and doesn't help with assignments much however Ethics is all about YOUR viewpoint. Fair grader. Plenty of lecture material to fall back on.
Great teacher, very friendly! And very fair!
Really open-minded, cool professor, huge KU fan. Although he pronounces that he is an atheist, he doesn't slander ones own views, which I greatly appreciated.
Doug is a good teacher. Make sure to do good on all the papers. Take advantage of his office hours to go over papers. He will look at it all and tell you what to work on, which helps the grade go up. Quizzes will really bite you in the butt at the end of the semester. Just try your best and ask if you need help. Always willing to help.
I dont know how he is in person but DO NOT TAKE ONLINE. There is an immense amount of work and the material is very difficult to understand just by reading!
Mr. Fishel's Ethics class is the most challenging course I have ever taken. There is a tremendous amount of readings, which are extremely complex and not easily absorbed. The tests are taken on campus, so you better know your stuff. Every grade you receive in this class is graded subjectively. Tests are all essay questions.
His power points are difficult to understand and not willing to help. Comments received on my papers were not constructive at all.
While he is a big KU fan, he is still an awesome teacher. He is really good at making sure you completely understand all the arguments and has many counterarguments that will help you do some really deep thinking. I really love his class, plus he is definitely not a sore sight to look at (for all my fellow ladies :) )
I took philosophy of religion. I love philosophy by nature and I even thought the course was difficult, but that's honestly what you're going to get when you take a philosophy. These concepts are not simple, these are real questions and real problems to answer. However, I thought Mr. Fishel was not very clear or helpful. But I managed an A still.
Mr. Fishel is an amazing instructor! He will help you in any way he can. He emails you back within a timely matter. He explains the material well, and he will participate in the online class. You have a couple of quizzes (multiple choice), a midterm, and a final (both short answer and essay). He gives good study guides so you are prepared.
This was honestly my favorite class. When you go there, just listen to his lectures and read the material he gives. It starts to feel less like a class and more like place to hang out and listen to cool theories from dead people. If you're interested in philosophy, you'll really enjoy his class.
This class is well worth your time.
Unless you are super into philosophy, you might struggle. You have really complex readings from the textbook that you are expected to understand and then come to class and discuss. He has short 2-question quizzes over the readings almost every class. He will help if you ask for it. Midterm and final are a huge part of the grade.
Fair. Openminded.
While he definitely seems passionte and knowledgeable about the topic, I was very disappointed in the online class. All of your grades come from tests and discussion boards, which is fine, however his due dates are not clear at all and when I emailed him on several occasions I never got a reply. He is very absent from the online class environment and was not very helpful at all.
This was my favorite class this semester, I had a lot of fun, just make sure you participate and read th readings assigned and you'll be fine
great teacher!!
There is much difficult reading required for this class! 3 papers, a midterm and a final. Tests are essay questions and short answers. Each of the 5 assignment are worth 100-150 points, so not much room for errors. Read and reread, and you better have some essay writing skills to pass this class. Helpful if you ask questions. Responds promptly.
Great teacher. He went out of his way to help me with issues I had in personal life by setting me up with a counselor he knew could help. Honestly is the reason I'm not going to stop at Associate's and plan on going for Bachelor's. He's convinced me to keep going. Most influential teacher I've ever had and I'm not a Phil major.
Pretty easy class. Really gets you to think.
Doug is amazing! He loves being a teacher and you can tell. He is really there for his students and wants everyone to do well. He knows so much about Philosophy that I doubt there is a question that he cannot answer. Very straight forward for what he expects from you and how to achieve it. You do have to put in some effort, but pretty easy class.
Good teacher, ethics is not my interest really, but he made it fairly fun. the grade was heavily weighted toward the last two weeks. Class participation is key to understanding.
Comments on papers and tests were not especially helpful. He became short a couple of times when student views contradicted his on larger issues. He's very liberal, but I think most college students are too. I can't say I would recommend him for an ethics class.
At least skimming over the readings are probably needed, though I only read a couple and did fine. He encourages you to participate in discussions, but its not necessary. Your grade is based on the midterm, final, two essays, and quizzes. He's there to help if you don't understand concepts and overall I thoroughly enjoyed his class.
Mr. Fishel will make you earn your A, although he is very understanding and helpful. He has been my favorite professor as of yet, and calls students higher in their learning. I took all the classes I could from him, and if I could continue undergraduate studies, I'd take even more.
Doug is one of the best professors I have ever had. Anyone who has failed one of his courses has not taken full advantage of all of their available resources.
Doug is one of my all time favorite professors! Pay attention, read, and study to be successful
While teaching logic, there were many times when he would either contradict himself or the book. Problems in class were very easy, but did not adequately prepare you for the tests, which were much harder. However, the grading is lenient as long as you aren't aiming for an A.
I wasn't a fan of this class at all. It was very difficult and I struggled to make a B and I'm an A student. The class was boring and there was a tone of random reading that you never knew if he would use it. This class has basically made me hate philosophy.
Doug Fishel is a really entertaining professor! He takes a very dry subject, philosophy, and turns it into something that you want to learn about. His class is well set up and he really does a great job of explaining things in terms students can grasp easily.
confuses himself a lot. Very aloof but you can tell hes a good guy. wants you to get a good grade in his class but will struggle to give you good feedback. class was pretty easy but if he just structured his class better then it would be a lot better.
Fishel is one of the best professors I have ever had. I took him for both Intro to Philosophy and Logic. If I wasn't graduating I would take another class with him. Put in the work and effort, and you will be able to get an A. He's available to help if needed, and it's obvious he cares about his students.
He is so unorganized it stressed me out. DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS. He was so lost and would never answer anyone's messages. My grades were posted on December 19 and they were due the 21. Very unprofessional in my opinion. Again unorganized and not helpful
There are quizzes that are 2 questions every class period. If you do the reading, they are easy. He grades fairly and gets tougher as the semester goes on with papers, as he feels you should be more competent by then. Very caring and will work with you. Great person and professor. You have to work for a good grade though.
Doug is fun and interactive with the class, but can be a little extra. No homework, just an assigned reading almost every class and a 2 question multiple choice quiz over it the next class. Only 2 papers all semester but you had to work for your grade on them. Always willing to talk about his class and answer any questions you have.
An incredibly tough grader. He doesn't give perfect scores but he also doesn't tell you what you did wrong. He even admitted in class that he hates giving good grades. If you care about your GPA, don't take his classes.
Doug is a good teacher, he gives quizzes every day at the beginning of class to take attendance so make sure youre there. There are also LOTS of readings in philosophy (a lot of which are extremely long and boring). The lectures are sometimes long and boring as well, but he does have a bit of humor to try to lighten it up. Debates are awesome.
Great and very interactive teacher, loved his teaching style and will for sure recommend him to anyone, sometimes things may get confusing because why not it's Philosophy, but if you work through it, you ll get out of this class with an added value and a great deal of knowledge
ONLINE To begin, I had a love-hate relationship. Fishel is very understanding, but tends to lack on the timely responses and feedback. I struggled through this class and found it very confusing, but after talking through the assignments with other people it became easier. I recommend taking in class rather than online if possible.
Doug is the best teacher I ever had. I've taken 2 more classes with him after this one and all of them have been awesome. I can't speak for the other Philosophy professors at Maplewoods, but Doug Fishel is a safe pick for a great teacher.
Logic is a fun class for anyone that likes Math, but if you don't there are still good reasons to take it, especially with Doug Fishel. He really works with the students to make sure everyone's learning the material. When I took the class, we would go over the homework as a class, but I don't think it was ever turned in for a grade
This class is very much lecture heavy with readings outside of class, however not readings from a textbook just online sources. Although this class is lecture heavy he makes the class interesting, relatable, and fun. All around a great guy who just wants to see his students succeed.
I will never take another class with Doug again. He lectures about things that are not even relevant to the powerpoints he presents during lectures. He makes things way more confusing than they need to be. He takes forever to get grades in the gradebook. Save your time and your GPA by choosing another professor to take philosophy with.
Horrible is all I can say!
Would not recommend whatsoever. Does not care about the learning of the student, only cares about making his class difficult for students. Take Philosophy with someone else please!!!
2 test, 2 papers. 2 question quiz most classes, but don't let this scare you off. Read the book and you'll be juicy. Get the main idea of each topic and you'll easily pass tests and papers. He also let's you know exactly what will be on the test. Great with questions and is available when you need help. Ignore bad reviews, Doug is pretty solid
This class is definitely one that you can't just float by and expect a good grade in. Very few things in the grade book, just two papers, two tests, and quiz scores. As long as you get the basic concept for topics, you should be fine. Be sure to go over the study guides he provides. Work hard and you'll do good in the class.
Seriously the worst teacher I have ever encountered. Does not respond to student messages, not clear on due dates so you just have to guess when assignments are due. Didn't explain what he wanted from essays and then graded them horribly. Said he wasn't trying to change your mind but graded off for opinions he didn't agree with. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Im a nursing student and he was by far the toughest prof Ive worked with. He treats this class like a 4/5000 level course. It was very frustrating when I got feedback on assignments that werent asked for in the instructions. I asked him for help and better ways to prepare for exams and was not given any advice. Good luck if you take him.
Professor Fishel lacked the ability to respond to emails and Blackboard messages in a timely manner. He made last minute changes to the schedule that put students grades in jeopardy. Although I wouldn't consider his class very challenging, it's a typical workload. He does makes it difficult to communicate with him and it can be frustrating.
I don't have a huge problem with the teacher, it was really the class itself I hated. If you struggle to memorize things do not take this class ever.
Professor Fishel knows what he's talking about. He's a very kind and gentle man who cares about your learning. Overall if you read he will answer any question you have. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
He is the best professor. He is respond to student message.
Everyone I know (including myself) who has taken Professor Fishel's class has loved it! He's super nice, super helpful, and the class itself is set up very well.
This is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He really looks out for his students. I was having technical difficulties with my computer and uploading assignments and he completely understood and would try and help me however he could. Definitely a respected professor.
Prof. Fishel is such a wholesome man and a kind, caring teacher. He definitely understands that us students have lots of things going on in our lives and gives long amounts of time for assignments. All reading quizzes and tests, with just two essays, and one of those being a group essay. All quizzes and tests are completed at home online too!!
Kind of a tough grader on discussion boards, but does give extra credit opportunity on them. A lot of quizzes but they are not too hard. 3 papers but clear on requirements. Participate and follow rubric and you will be fine. Would take another class of his.
He was okay, but strict on papers for a summer class that 8 weeks long. Exams were online and it was easy, but the written section grades it very critical. I rather not having to take a class in the summer that has to write papers and study for exams. But writing papers isn't as bad but the grading of the grader is rough.
Doug is a funny and kind professor, but the material itself can be hard to comprehend. If you but in effort you can get an A, but make sure to use him as a resource.
Doug is super cool- but don't take his class at 8 am. it's just a lot to wrap your head around most of the times but he is very good at trying to explain it, use his office. the 2 papers are easy but the midterm and final are what tanked my grade as there's not many questions and they're worth a lot of % of your grade and if you miss one it sucks.
I really enjoyed this class, the workload was very manageable! The schedule is lenient which is nice as long you keep up on it (Canvas doesn't put it in "to do"). We had two essays & he's a fair grader. The midterm/final are open-note and you can form the essay beforehand. The MC questions were a little tricky for me. Would definitely take again!
He is an amazing person and does the job of really "making you think" outside of your own perspective. He really has strong Ideas and I felt like I had to write my papers thinking about his viewpoint. I really questions Dougs view tho, he goes to church yet craps on Christians. He is a good guy, very caring and does his job well. Test are online!
The class was overall pretty easy. Didn't open my textbook once for this class. He does let his opinion show through his lectures quite a bit though. Most of the quizzes you can find online. Showing up to class wasn't required but it helped, he talks a lot and gets sidetracked easily, but notes would be hard to understand without showing up.
I took his ethics class in the fall, and hes a really sweet and nice guy, but his teaching style is a bit difficult to follow, his test and quizzes were fairly easy if you study and there are quizlets availible to help which helped me a tone, and then be prepared for his papers because he can be a very tough grader, overall I enjoyed his class tho!
he was a very funny teacher. we would be mad if u were a mizzou fan instead of a ku fan. there are 3 essays you must do based on the lectures he gives and the essays you read on the textbook. lots of reading from a textbook about specific people and their theories. would get mad if you didn't participate. easy class if you are a deep thinker.
Never saw Prof Fishel arrive to class without a smile. Great, funny guy that you can't help but like. Class was pretty easy, but be warned tests are changing from at home to in class next semester. Other than that, papers aren't too bad and you can send them to him for feedback before the due date. Highly recommend professor Fishel.
Mr. Fishel was a great guy and he always had a smile on his face. He knew what he was talking about and knew the subject well. He was a fairly tough grader, so if you are wanting to take his class because you have to in order for a major and you just want to get above a C then you should be good to go.If you like philosophy then you would love him
Doug was a fine professor but I would NEVER take again. I ended with a 89.4 and I asked if there were anything I could do for him to bump, he said no. He completely took out 2 discussion boards AFTER the due date, even though most people did them already. You get graded on your participation. You must follow his rubric or you will fail papers.
Lectures were thorough, wasn't too much work. Iffy on electronics during class like phones/computers and will personally call you out if he sees you on one. He didn't let a student use the bathroom and a different student started an argument with him about it and he argued back immaturely. Told the whole class to just leave if we use the bathroom.
Professor Fishel is great, my class was entirely online so it was a little bit different but nothing I wasn't already expecting. Any assignments that were given had very clear instructions on what was expected and how to get a good grade. If you did happen to do something incorrectly he gave great feedback on how to improve in the future.
He's a decent prof. He teaches well and explains concepts very thoroughly so that you can understand them. However, he can come off as passive-aggressive at times. Participation is incredibly important as a class, and he can get annoyed if you don't answer his questions or talk in class. He can be petty too. But other than that, he's alright.
Professor Fishel is a great guy who keeps the class fun and engaging. The workload is manageable, and the tests are open-note which helps a lot. Unstuck ai was super useful for preparing. Would definitely take this class again!
In his ethics course, you will not know your mistakes until you've made them. Papers are labeled as subjective, but you can never have enough evidence to support your arguments. You will rarely get 100%. Almost gave me a zero from a due date mistake, and would not cooperate until I brought the co-instructor into it and proved him wrong.
