Sporadic! Loosely organized, slow to grade/return papers. However, he's very flexible and understanding.
forgets to bring your stuff back, therefore expect to do half the work of any other 1a class.
Love this teacher. Take him if you are interested in the enviornment and can handle the liberal view of life. He isnt that nitpicky on papers, more involved in content.
Very good teacher, I learned a lot from his class.
Worst teacher ever because of him more work lost papers had to re-do them
I loved this class. Fisher was great for creative writing because he made us all feel comfortable about expressing ourselves. He was very nice and the way the class was set up was great.

I enjoyed this teacher's class. He was helpful if you asked, and we had good discussions. The assignments are all reasonable and I had no problem keeping up in this class. Reccomended.
Hmm...just say no. Unless you have had a "life-changing experience with nature". It was a waste of time. He talks a lot about his plane.
He is a cool guy. Talks a lot, but a great teacher.
Really encouraging and helpful. The class I took was advertised as being focused on the environment so I assumed he would be a lefty, which he was though very tolerant of opposing view points.
Hard class, didn't enjoy it. Barely passed because he didn't grade my final essay, let's just say he forgot to grade it...Until I confronted him and just gave me a passing grade. Talks a lot about his plane.
i found the subject interesting, and the reading was interesting too. doug was always saying "uukaaay?", and talking about his airplane, but he was a good teacher, and i enjoyed the class

good guy, good teacher, good sense of humor, helpfull...just don't sign up for the "nature-themed" course. it is so****ty.
Slim ball! He always conviently lost papers until the class confronted him. He has his favorites and if you are not one of them watch out. Told me that my handwriting style indicated to him that I was immature. Do not take!
I wouldn't recommend this class. He talks about himself most of the time and gives assignments on top of assignments. Essay due Monday? Well, read three more and do review papers on them in addition. His grading system is as if he picks a random # in each area of critique, but never an A, no matter how good the comments were.

I thought the Nature Writing class would give a fun new spin on english but I ended up hating it. He talks about himself and his experiances all the time and leaves little time for actually teaching us. I felt like I learned nothing all semester.
I thought this would be an interesting class. He is the worst & laziest teacher I've seen in 30 yrs. The kicker was he never returned our papers the entire class; he graded them after the course ended; and flunked most of his students. He didn't get away with it; as I appealed my grade & won since he dated/graded my papers after school ended.
Teacher is pretty wierd. Lectures often stray from the subject. Alot of writing!!! I thought the class was boring and i dreaded going. However now that the class is over i can look back and see that i did learn alot. As long as you turn in all of the assignments and tell him what he wants to hear (even if its not your opinion) you will get the grad
this class was awful. he expects you to have a spiritual attatchment to this earth, and if your not an enviromentalist your doomed to fail, and if your a christian, your also doomed to fail, he singles you out in class and expects you to put aside your life for this class, dont take hime if you want real constructive criticism on your writing.
i really enjoyed taking Doug's class because of its environmental focus. we read some interesting essays and annie dillard so i dug the reading. there was a journal thing which just required us to write for 20min. 4 or 5 days a week. sounds like a lot maybe, but it could just be anything we had on our minds, and it really helped with essay ideas

Boring, tells the same stories and jokes, not that helpful, talks about himself a lot, and every essay you have to write about has to be nature related...ecology place...very hard...and you have to have like 50 pages of work along with your final essay. Don't recommed taking him. The class started out with 30 students ended up with 8
This guy grades super harsh, I busted my butt and turned in every assignment on time and he gave me a C >.< He makes you write 3 drafts of every paper and you have to turn in all your class notes as well as 50 pages of personal journals. He talks about himself all class and then springs tons of homework on you.
Fisher is really hard at grading. The class was interesting at points, but the only way you can catch his interest on essays is by taking his veiw on things. I really cant get over how hard he grades even when you do everything he says. He isnt open to stylistic writing.
When he stated that "Military Intelligence is and oxy moron," I lost complete interest in the class. Never take his English class if you want inbiased views.
a really hard class... had to write a lot... all essays are open ended and just have to be about something that connects to nature and place... would suggest him only if you are ready to spend loads of time on what u turn in...
the most disorganized teacher and unprepared
Was not capable of leading a class discussion, and often went off on tangents about his own life. Gave some good points on what is really happening with the earth, and encouraged others to write about their experiences.
My favorite teacher! Taking creative writing with him gave me confidence in my abilities as a writer and a thinker, and Intro to the Novel with Fisher was a great experience. Loved it! I always liked his stories, and found that the people who hated him were the ones who couldn't put in the effort. It's not that hard, so no sympathy from me.
If you enjoy being challenged with your writing take this class. Mr Fisher isn't down for people who have no interest and are just trying to B.S. him. I worked really hard and wrote some killer essays that I spent 30 hours writing and still got a B.
This was a hard course. Homework is verbally given on each class period and all readings must have a 5 point attached reading review (about 4 short stories per week). I was lucky to get an A but I did not get my papers back until the following semester. With full attendance I met with him almost each week and all papers were peer reviewed. He is in
He is in agreement with the other teachers grammar and it helps to have them proof read your pages. Lab time is mandatory at 2 hour per week minimum. Journaling (writing short stories - 1 for every day) is also mandatory and at the end of class they must all be in order, numbered, and with your notes to be graded.
Compressive Final exam and 4 specific types of essays about nature is also required. Readings reflect writings which match other staff members styles and grading which brings this teacher to a hard A without being unfair. Homework is sometimes verbalized under his breath to the class.
This class was not as fun as I thought. He grades hard, but at least his comments on papers are helpful. Be afraid to share your opinion because he isn't friendly when you say something he doesn't like. And also, be prepared to write many essays and many drafts.
I found mr Fisher really understanding, not that much homework, he likes to asign essay responses but they are not hard. I really liked having him as my english teacher, even though english is not my favorite class he was a good teacher, he likes to tell storys and talk about politics and it delays class so that is always fun. Overall a good teacher
Mr. Fisher was late to class every day, even after he gave us the speech that students that care and want a good grade should be to class on time or atleast 5 mins early. This was a very boring class, everything we did was about nature, 9 papers all over nature, 35 journals all on natural, no in class teaching, went off on random story after story
I found that in one on one meetings I had a much better opportunity to improve my writing, but the class setting was a little constrained. He takes the student's interest in literature for granted. But I have no complaints.
1/2 of my class dropped by the end of the semester. Yes, half. Not exaggerating. He was late most days, but if you were late on a day when he happened to be on-time, points were off for you. I usually get A's and I struggled for a B. He should retire, he forgets things- but he definitely remembers how to make you know that he feels superior to you.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!! Do not take his class. I showed up to EVERY class and did EVERY assignment and he gave me a C because my way of life and opinions werent the same as his. He LOVES to single people out in front of the entire class and any chance he gets he tries to make you feel stupid. Worst english experience of my life.
Assigns excess reading while being utterly disorganized himself-writing quizzes the morning of class. Just tells people to "discuss" the majority of the time. Or if he gives a topic, doesn't allot enough time to review&analyze it. Expects everyone to come to the same conclusion he did, & always tells what it is before you have the chance anyway.
I have to say that even though I share a lot of Doug's values and philosophies, I still can't see eye to eye with him. Trying to talk with him is an exercise in frustration-you say one thing and he hears another. I have an easier time talking with friends who aren't entirely fluent in english than with this, ironically, english teacher.
He is very unorganized. He thinks he's God and that you have no other classes besides his or any work. His "goal" is to assign 8 hrs worth of hw every wk. If you would like to not go insane with rage avoid this man.
If you are a serious student, or like the subject, avoid this guy like the plague.
Please don't take this class. Before this, I actually enjoyed English and was hoping to become a better writer. Instead I learned nothing. You're only assigned 4 essays and quizzes. He grades only on whether or not your opinion matches his. He taught nothing new, the class is basically a forum for him to spew an autobiography...avoid this teacher!
A very nice guy who loves to speak his opinion and loves his students. With that said, I was in a creative writing class but we didn't do much writing at all, which is what that class is supposed to be about. If you're looking for a challenging class that will better your writing abilities you may want to find another teacher.
Sexist, rude, contradicting, lame! Everything in class has to do with his family experiences, and if you differ, you fail. Constantly late to class, never has his own books. Completely useless, and I cannot believe he is still a teacher here.
I counted how many times he said the word, "okay" during the last 45 minutes of class and he said it a total of 106 times. Haha, he's a good writer and a brilliant mind and even though he loses track of his thoughts easily, he's not that bad of a teacher overall. If you have a good comprehension of English this class will be a breeze.
Its hard to gather it all without swearing. I CANNOT believe this man still teachers. He makes it a point to state he does not care about students on his weekend. It reflects very poorly on the supposed "Best JC" in the country that this man is a part of the faculty. I'm considering a transfer because of him.
He is a nice teacher who does a good job even though he has been teaching forever. He expects you to be on-time and attend class and he is NOT usually late. He brings his own books and expects the same from you. There is a good amount of reading and writing, it is an English class after all! He is fair and will work with you if you don?t understan
I learned nothing in this class and was bored by the assignments and very disapointed in the lack of organization Fisher provided. He graded the writing assignments fairly but we wrote the same essay topic three times and only read two books. This class had an abnormally large focus on the assignment. It was an easy class but tedious and unhelpful.
Mr. Fisher does not know how to teach an English class properly. He plays favorites in class and is very judgmental and close-minded. If your views of the world deviate from his own, he will grade you unfairly. No matter how hard you try in this class, he will just base your grade on his opinion of you, not your work. Assignments teach you NOTHING!
Fisher is a great teacher. His focuses more towards nature. Which I love. The texts he uses helps show the infinite range of writing styles and technique. He has oneonone student teacher conferences in which he criticizes your writing in a positive manner. A VERY GOOD professor. He loves writing and helping you to become the best writer you can be.
Fisher is a wonderful teacher, super interesting classes and wonderful choices of books used. The class is easy if you do the assignments, which he gives you plenty of time to do. Im a science major and i still loved this class. He is very helpful and understanding about difficult situations. the bad reveiws on here must be from lazy slackers.
NOT GOOD! Fisher is scared of his students and his teaching is hard to follow. You can distract him so easily and waste an entire class talking about his airplane. I knew more about literature before the class and it didn't help that he just shoots down your ideas if they aren't the exact same as his.
Fisher is interesting-he can be a terrible teacher, play favorites, get off topic, share controversial opinions and talk about himself a bit. However, if you convince him you are a good student and aren't afraid to challenge his sometimes terrible opinions, you will do great and will learn a lot about writing in class.
Really hard teacher, he demands alot of his students and never helps with papers. He is very unclear about many topics and the only things you ever learn is when you go to Newman auditorium for lectures by nature buffs. Unless you like working hard and getting a C I wouldn't recommend this class. AVOID IT AT ALL COST!
He loves the sound of his own voice and will talk about absolutely nothing the entire class. He gives no feedback on your papers, which is extremely frustrating. The class was super easy in the worst way possible. I recommend if you do not care too much about english or writing and just want a descent grade.
He just talks talks talks talks about everything and anything. Good teacher, very understanding and gives good feedback, but he just rambled on for two hours. Take his class if you like enviromental issues!!!!!!
This professor was very unclear with what he wanted from his students. It is very difficult to earn a B let alone an A in this course. I would not suggest it unless you are seriously interested in nature. He is very unclear as to when assignments are due. If you take this class, good luck.
Very boring class. Fisher loves to talk and a lot of the time it's irrelevant to the class material. Pretty easy class if you do all the work. The work includes lots of reading responses, and 5 or 6 essays.
This is the worst professor I've had in my college experience. He is unclear and gives you no notice on assignments. There is no schedule of assignments, and he will assign everything one day ahead of time. He grades on how he thinks essays should be written, nothing else. Do not take this class if you have a job or a busy life.
I took Fishers english 1A class and enjoyed it. He does get a little off track, but it is not a hard class. I would recommend it, I'm sure other teachers are much harder. The people complaining about him just don't understand what he is trying to achieve from his students. Also, the nature focus is interesting.
Fisher isnt as bad as they say. He just assigns a ton of doable work. People start to get lazy and confindent and then get angry when he grades them hard. The class is a very doable A, use office hours, he loves it! Class isnt exciting but I did learn a thing or two. He is actually a really nice guy, just do the wrk, go to office hrs and go 2 class
Worst teacher I've ever had. Unclear on assignments, gives little to no assistance, and grades like you're in a Harvard class. Expects a lot out of his students, but is unreliable himself. Classes are unproductive and consist of him talking about his life. I learned nothing. Do not take this class. It will ruin your GPA.
he dosnt have grades ON TIME!!! SO HOW DO I KNOW IF IM PASSING? TAKE THE FINAL. THE NEXT DAY> D. it would helpful to know what your curretn grade is so that you can do something about it before its to late.
This guy, the material is easy but he doesn't help you. He critizes your work and then, never returns it. He is a good person but it is time for him to retire.
Mr Fisher was one of the best college teachers I have ever had. He was challenging, but more so challenged how you view yourself in the world. The readings and how he relates it to life creates an English class that is more than just essays and grammar. Fisher will always be in my top five teachers, usually sitting at number one.
He uses Huck Fin as his example for everything, he assumes that despite having to have taken 1A before this class no one knows how to write a thesis and he can't lead class discussion. The only reason I didn't drop the class is because he is such an easy grader. Take the class if you want an A, not if you want to have an enjoyable experience.
He's late to class, late returning papers, and likes to put you in groups while he disapears out the door for an hour. Lazy and incompetent professor. I'd rather chew razor blades than take another class with this guy. Luckily, I don't think he'll be teaching much longer. He's just phoning it in until he retires at this point.
Rambling and incoherent - time spent in this class was wasted. I was graded down on essays because he disagreed with my interpretations of the text, and was going to receive a "C" for the class. I retook the class with McCulloch and got an A, even though her class was significantly more challenging.
Fisher doesn't even try to teach anything in this class; he prefers to show us poems he likes and have us steal classrooms with certain desks and electronics when he seldom uses them. Half of the classes we go to the library in groups anyway. He does not give helpful directions and he only speaks of his wife's success as a writer.
Mr. Fisher is a really nice guy, but his creative writing class seemed disorganized and was pretty boring. I did learn a little and it motivated me to write, but I was hoping for more.
Mr. Fisher provided a class that was challenging, but in the end; very rewarding. His class structure is a little looser than most, and some of the assignments required questions to be asked to have complete clarity. But the variety of the course work, Fisher's passion in his field of study, and his drive to help his student made this a great class
Fisher is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. He never made sense! He didn't like some people in my class because they had a different opinion then him. He was really unclear and scatter minded. He always changed his opinion on topics and then looked at us like we were stupid when we would ask him questions on why he thought that way!
I had Doug for 1A then was forced to sign up for his Engl 5 class because there was no other section available. He tells stories about his life the entire class period. It is tortuous. Also, his 1A material was EXACTLY the same as his Engl 5 class --very frustrating. He gives very little direction on his assignments but expects a lot. DO NOT TAKE
Mr. Fisher is very unclear with what he lectures about, often going off on tangents which veer off from what the lecture was about, and makes the 2 hour class seem much longer. He assigns essays to read every day, sometimes multiple, and you must write a response essay to each. Tons of homework, bad lecturer, worst class I took in college.
Fisher is a difficult teacher. 5 Essays(Lets you resubmit first 21 in-class essay), about 12 Essay Responses(to book you buy), 8hr writing center requirement,no midterm but there is a Final(on essay responses). Whole course deals with nature. If you just want to read novels and write literary essays don't take this class.
Great class, enjoyed the reading and discussion matter; homework was a bit overwhelming but if you get everything done and enjoy english there shouldn't be a problem.
Mr Fisher is better at being a friend than a teacher. He is very unclear about his assignments and when they are assigned, they are very "up in the air" so you never know when they are due. He assigns 5 essays 1)discriptive 2)informational 3)argumentative 4)literary analysis 5)final essay. Only really talks about assignments 5 min in class.
Heavy homework but great teacher and great course outline. Loved the reading and class discussion, one of my favorite professors.
Started the first day of class telling us that most of us weren't going to pass, and then the day of the final told us only 10% of the class passed.
He wasn't a god-aweful teacher. He takes roll a lot, so you need to show up. You'll end up learning more about his family and his life than English. He shortly describes homework, and your assignments are all about reading many short essays and typing up a couple page responses about the text. Then you have like 4 essays and the final for a test.
I comprehend many of the concerns of the reviews below. I think the point of telling many tales of her own was to indirectly teach students how to write a chronologically and logical story. While I wouldn't describe him as a exceptional teacher, I'm pretty grateful with his classes. He is retiring soon from what I know.
He has opinions & shares them freely. Couldn't tell if sometimes he shares certain opinions just to get a reaction from students, yet he was more than open to hearing me out when I was frustrated by a lecture. His feedback was constructive and I learned a lot from his class. Loved the theme of the course - environment/nature writing
