Funny funny funny :)
Quite an interesting class. Funky hair. Due to his philosphical mind, he tends to wander of into quanderies of mental masturbation. Nonetheless, a good teacher. Odd comments on essays, though, consisting of "yes" and "yup".
Awesome professor. Very knowledgeable but has fun with the class. Let's us ask any questions and comments we want and gives great answers. Gives helpful and detailed feedback on papers. Wonderful experience.
Professor Giles may not have the look of a 'normal' professor, but he has the mind to make up for it. His sense of humor and extensive knowledge keep you hooked and interested. He allows free discussion and his exam/essays are challenging, but worth the effort.
Awesome teacher, awesome class! It was so much fun, we had the most random discussions about things completely off topic. First class i actually looked foreward to in a long tiime.
He's a lot of fun. Has lot's of energy, Cool guy but smart. Let's us all ask questions and speak our minds. Love going to class. Every test is open-book take-home. I will definitely take another course from him.
Excellent teacher. His knowledge of the subject is extensive. He is amazing at answering questions, he takes your questions seriously and gives detailed and helpful answers. I took Modern Philosophy from him and learned a ton. He corrected many misconceptions I had about the philosophers. He gives great feedback on papers. Take his courses!
Prof. Giles is the best! He can take really complex philosophical ideas and make them easy to understand and he really shows you how Philosophy is relevant in everyday life. I'm definitely going to take more Philosophy courses with him.
Very good. Always gives interesting lectures with examples and heads and trees! very enthusiastic. Always available and helpful. Pay attention in class and pay attention to his feedback on papers and you will do well in his course.
One of the most boring teachers. Lectures are a jumble of information that doesn't get used in the papers you need to write. Changes grading style throughout the semester. Does not even know students name. Not a hard class but don't expect anything exciting
A fun and energetic professor who is very personable and makes philosophy interesting. His lectures are built on top of the reading so do the reading first or else you are lost and confused, but if you do the reading his lectures really help you to understand. Follow his instructions on the papers you'll do well. I recommend Prof. Giles very much!
I never thought I would enjoy philosophy - just took it for a distribution requirement - but Prof. Giles made lectures fun and the subject interesting. When I had problems he was very friendly and easy to talk with and he really helped me, he never talked down to me but worked with me. I enjoyed his class a lot and got a lot out of it.
Finally a cool professor! Great teacher. Very funny. Class is always interesting. He goes out of his way to help you and gives great feedback on your papers. I have decided to become a philosophy major because of Professor Giles :)
Awesome class! Awesome teacher!
I really enjoyed Prof. Giles's course and learned a lot. I will take another of his classes because it has sparked an interest in philosophy.
Does a good job of explaining the topics and making them interesting. Assignments are short papers. He gives you a lot of freedom on what you want to write about and he gives good feedback on papers and very clear on what he is grading on and why. An excellent instructor.
Great semester. Liked his passion for the subject. Challenges you and makes you think, but in a good way.
I love Dr. Giles. He's cool, knowledgeable, funny, and entertaining with a great atiitude. Makes class fun and informative. He is flexible and understanding, unlike many professors.
I had high interest before taking this class but I learned nothing. Lectures are hard to follow and though they made sense it was hard to incorporate this info into the papers. There were not enough comments on the papers so its really hard to know what he's looking for. I did not enjoy this class as much as I hoped I would. Least favorite class.
Took Phil of Religion and loved it. I recommend! Dr Giles' lectures are fascinating- great topics, lots of useful information. 4 papers assigned, e-mail in and he e-mails them back with lots of comments. He wants well-written detailed papers with your own deep thoughts. If you take his comments seriously and improve your papers you get good grades.
I thought Prof. Giles was awesome. His lectures were really interesting and made the textbook material a lot more clear. I really enjoyed the class discussions and loved coming to class. I was kind of interested in Philosophy before but now I'm considering changing my major to it because I loved this course.
This class was truly enjoyable for me, and I really enjoyed Prof. Giles' way of teaching. A great semester.
Hilarious and fun. Makes us work but that makes the A grades so much more satisfying :)
He makes philosophy accessible and put a lot of life into it. No boring films, classes haves real conversations. His lectures go beyond the textbook so while attendance is not mandatory, it is worth showing up, and there are great discussions in class where everyone can participate and ask questions.
Easy to understand. Doesn't give "busy" work and dumb assignments like other profs. Classes are cool.
Awesome professor! You have to take his courses! Prof. Giles is very funny and his passion for philosophy is infectious. He is a great prof to deal with and he loves open conversation in class and his assignments are all take home. You haven't had the full Elmhurst Experience without taking Prof. Giles!!!!!
I really really enjoyed this course. In fact, I am disappointed I didn't take it sooner. I'd have enjoyed taking another course with you. Your teaching style is great. It's obvious you love what you teach and are very knowledgeable. I particularly liked that you gave us the context. It's so instrumental in understanding and most profs leave it out.
Take Prof. Giles' courses! He is the best, very clear and very helpful, fun and interesting.
Very open minded. Very helpful. Very open to student questions and comments. Great lectures. He really knows his stuff.
Dr. Giles' knowledge is encyclopedic. VERY willing to answer questions and very tolerant of opposing viewpoints. Feedback is provided on papers and exams-explanations are clear and helpful. Goes out of his way to be available to students. Provides Web site with course that is very helpful.
I really like that Prof. Giles gives both sides of issues and respects difference of opinion. You learn multiple sides of the issues not just what he thinks. That's rare in college. I really enjoyed Prof Giles's course.
I have a huge amount of respect for Prof. Giles. There are endless chances to misspeak in a religion class, but Giles has an ability to give both sides of an opinion without taking sides. I always felt like I was able to share my opinion. Amazingly, I was able to both learn something and have fun in this class. That is extremely rare!
Thanks for an amazing semester. I really enjoyed it.
I really learned a lot in Prof. Giles's course and had a great time. I like that all exams and papers are take-home, makes it easier. He gives good feedback.
Very helpful and understanding. He's brilliant but not so head in the clouds that he can't explain philosophical ideas to intro students. A very rewarding course!
Treats his students really well. Isn't condescending and he isn't boring, bringing his passion for the subject to every class and he has a good sense of humor.
Heads and trees! Great course.
He has a nice relaxed style and really open to questions and comments. Makes philosophy fun and accessible. We have the best discussions in class. I'm really learning a lot
Very helpfull with going over papers if you simply take the time to ask.
Nice guy, but I spent the entire semester figuring out what he wanted out of a paper. Once I figured it out I did fine, but it was too late. He didn't give helpful feedback, even when I asked for him directly. 4.0 killer.
I agree, he was very clear what he expected on the papers. He is also very helpful when you ask for it. He's funny and explains the ideas well, very open to questions. He helped my understanding.
Thank you for everything over the last semester :)
I have thoroughly enjoyed both classes I have taken with Prof. Giles, and learned and thought a lot! Nice guy, easy to talk with and easy to understand.
I actually am excited to go to class each time - we have the most amazing off-the-wall discussions.
Giles is cool. Very good at explaining ideas and telling you what he wants on assignments.
I really Prof. Giles. He brought a lot of fun and humor to the class. It was my first philosophy class and I learned a lot.
Very interesting course. He does a great job being enthusiastic about philosophy and uses many great examples to allow you to understand. He really expanded my knowledge.
The instructor is great. The course is very interesting. The instructor is very very knowledgeable and his lectures are not boring. Effective class discussions.
Recommend! I learned more about cultures in Phil of Religion than my Intercultural Studies class. There was great discussion and a lot to talk about and learn from. We covered not only the facts about a wide variety of religions but learned how to study them and how to understand them on a deeper level. Great teaching style and I enjoyed.
I love philosophy and Giles is the best. His teaching style really opens up the course and brings life to the philosophers. Great at blended primary and secondary source material and including student questions.
Best professor ever. Really clear. Fun. Knowledgeable. Gives great feedback on papers. Makes class enjoyable. Easy to work with.
He's remarkably unbiased for a religion teacher and presents the subject matter evenly and consistently. The book used is very good, really opens up religion with a new perspective.
I?m a fan. Best prof at Elmhurst.
Prof. Giles's teaching method is great. He is very knowledgeable and doesn't get upset when questions are asked. He appreciates student input.
Not as funny as he thinks he is but I appreciate that he isn't stuck up and stuffy, class is interesting.
Take Modern if Giles is teaching it. I learned a lot but it wasn't too taxing. Good combination of reading and discussion.
I found the class to be enlightening and very informative and sparked my interest in pursuing more knowledge in philosophy. I appreciated Giles's personality. sense of humor, and teaching style.
He's a thorough and good professor, caring, kind, smart, open, and honest. The lectures helped to explain much of the material and makes it interesting.
Giles is a great teacher. He is very sensible, on par with the students, and delivers knowledge very well. Take his courses at least once.
Amazing attitude overall, very enthusiastic. Easy to learn from and talk to. Just amazing.
Great professor, took two courses with him and loved every minute of them. Good luck in England, Prof. Giles, Elmhurst will miss you!
Great teacher! Is very open to peoples opinion as long as they are well supported unlike other professors that would rather you agree with them than actually think. If there is any class to take at EC its this one. Class is easy as long as you pay attention, think for yourself and put in the effort. I would take def take another class with him.
Loved his enthusiasm and ability to explain difficult concepts. Elmhurst College seems emptier without him.
This was my first online class and it was weird getting used to but the instructor was helpful. Heavy use of textbook, video lectures and written notes posted online. Weekly discussion posts and three exams.
Great class, great prof. Dr. Giles is very clear about what is expected in the course and how to get a good grade, but best of all he lets us speak our minds, never talks down to us. We have great discussions online. I learned a lot this term, discovered some philosophers I never heard of and had my eyes opened about those I had.
Good deal. Nice lectures, lots of resources. Follow the instructions and express yourself well and you get an A.
Knowledgeable and gives decent feedback. Tough grader for a class the majority take in order to fulfill a gen ed requirement... not because they want to. (Hint: choose another prof or class)
I think he forgets that students have other classes that they need to focus on. He clearly doesn't think highly of students that don't easily understand philosophy. He also isn't understanding during high-stress situations. I wouldn't recommend taking this professor.
Arrogant. Condescending. If you take his online class be sure to treat it like a more important 300/400 level class otherwise hell say youre a bad student. Hes also one of those professors that unsuccessfully tries to act woke and relatable. Take another professor. This guy is the worst.
I had never taken philosophy before, but Giles made things easy to understand. He gives a ton of material and great video lectures and was very helpful with assignment feedback. During the pandemic crisis, he was very helpful and understanding. Great prof, would take again.
Yeah, that's guy's great. Before this class, I had NO clue what philosophy was but I learned a lot about philosophy and enjoyed it. He makes it very clear what he wants and he doesn't expect you to be a genius, he just wants you to think for yourself and express your thoughts. So cool. Don't be lazy, do the work, you get a good grade. Simple.
Good course. Lots of reading and writing. You get to write your own thoughts. Video lectures and only 1 required texbook, very cheap. Most readings he posts online for free. He lives on a different continent, but that's the age we live in now. Was weird at first, but I got used to it. Responds to e-mails quickly and is very polite and respectful.
With my degree, this specific class gave me an opportunity to reflect on my beliefs and apply my own personal experiences to the material. It will help me a lot. Thank you, Professor Giles!
All classes went online this term but Professor Giles ws the ONLY professor who was responsive, caring, and helpful to me as I struggled to keep up with everything. He let me balance my assignment schedule and he kept me going. Thanks, Prof. Giles for showing me that Elmhurst cares about their students.
Took this class online and loved it! Great way to get introduced to philosophy. Very interesting and lots of great information! Prof. Giles is very knowledgable and understanding! Put your own thoughts and opinions into your responses and you will succeed! Weekly responses online, one midterm, and a final exam! Very straight forward! I recommend!
Profesor Giles is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about the content he teaches. If you watch his lectures and write thoughtful and meaningful responses, you will be good. His informational videos are also very interesting and made me look forward to viewing them. Very enjoyable class and I recommend him heavily.
Great prof. Easy A, just follow his suggestions and do the writing work.
Enjoyed the course. Giles was very helpful and entertaining. Handled the lockdown well.
Great course, great prof. I'd never had philosophy before but learned a lot and enjoyed it. Would take him again.
never taken a philosophy class, Giles is an amazing professor, love his lectures, he makes them fun . All u have to do is a weekly discussion of what we thought based on the lecture, he is NOT looking for A SUMMARY (it gets easier to write them as weeks go ) u put effort into your response guarantee A+. PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS, U WONT REGRET IT
THE BEST PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY!!! I was a little scared about philosophy initially but he made each of the philosophers easy to understand though his videos, as long as you watch them and try to understand it and give your own thoughts it is a breeze. IF YOU GET A CHANCE TAKE HIM! YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
Great course. I have learned a lot this semester, not just about myself but about life in general. Philosophy is much more interesting than I expected.
Wrote his own textbook, that gave me pause, but it was actually good, as was the course. A lot of work, but I got a lot out of it.
This class was very interesting, I enjoyed it. You will have to apply yourself if you want to pass. He has clear grading and provides feedback on how to improve.
Cool prof, cool course. Leaned a lot about stuff I had never thought of before. Entertaining video lectures, great readings, great communication. Very understanding teacher. Would take again if I could.
It was a full online course but his lecture videos was well developed enough to keep me focused and entertained with his humor.
Amazing course! I enjoyed a lot of the topics, espcially the recent philosophies of feminism, race, and nonheteronormative. Totally asynchonous course, but Dr. Giles was always accessible and provided so much great material.
Amazing professor! I can't recommend his asynchronous class enough! He makes hard topics easy to understand, super cool guy and very understanding. Not a lot of homework or work in general but he's just very picky as to the quality of the work. As long as you engage in the reflections and apply his feedback you'll do great.
Truly a wonderful guy. Makes his long lectures humorous, entertaining, and educating. Was going through a rough time, emailed him, and he was so kind and understanding. My favorite class at elmhurst so far. Be ready to right, listen, and read. His grading is valid. Work hard and apply your knowledge to your short essays. Def try to taking this clas
This course is online. A must is actually read his readings and watch his videos. I promise in doing so, the course will flow through better and be easier. He gives incredible feedback if you read it, and he knows how to simplify very tough philosophy. Highly recommend taking Giles.
I was hesitant to take a philosophy course, but Dr. Giles knows what he's talking about! He doesn't want you to memorize every name of every philosopher, he just wants us to interact with the material so that we discover our own opinions. I actually started to enjoy the homework because with each assignment, I learned more about myself.
Dr. Giles has strong command of the subject matter, was clear about requirements and was responsive to students' ideas. Gave good feedback. Some weeks were challenging due to the need to read two chapters, but the week on feminist philosophy was particularly insightful. It allowed me to explore important questions about gender, power, and equality.
Great course. Great introduction to philosophy. The workload was a little heavy but that was because of J-Term. Giles was very clear about what was expected and gave just the right amount of assignments at a good pace. Good experience and I learned a lot and enjoyed it.
If you need a philosophy course, I definitely recommend taking PHL210 with him. Philosophy is not something I care about, but he made it pretty interesting and he wrote the textbook which makes it much easier to follow than a regular textbook.
This class was super interesting, and I am glad I elected to take it. I was nervous about the asynchronous modality of the course but found it to be pretty convenient overall. There are only discussion posts due every other week on the assigned lecture and textbook content. Dr. Giles makes the lectures engaging, and the readings are interesting.
I'm loving this course. The professor provides so many helpful materials, a great textbook that is easy to understand (half the price of other textbooks) and entertaining video lectures. He makes difficult topics easy to understand, is very helpful when you ask for help, and gives good feedback on assignments. Take this course! You'll love it too.
Read the book, speak your thoughts professionally using the book and lectures, and you'll get an A P.s. The professor's online recorded lectures are enjoyable to watch
Prof. Giles makes philosophy engaging. His lectures are clear, and the textbook he wrote is super helpful. Unstuckstudy was great for study prep. Attend class, do the work, and you'll learn a lot.
Great course. great professor. He's easy to understd, giving clear directions and guidance. Very helpful in support. 7 writing assignments based on the readings and lectures. Clear, useful feedback that helped me improved. I tanked the first assignment but Prof. Giles worked with me and I ended up with an A for the course. Learned a lot and had fun
do not take this class if youre looking for an easy way to get this credit. essay every two weeks but very tough grader and hard to impress. would highly mot recommend.
Essays every two weeks and chapter readings and videos. Lots of work but I learned a lot so I think it was worth it. That being said, if you don't like reading and writing take another class because that's all this class is. Also he responds fast and gives very good feedback on how to get a good grade. Put in the work, see good results. That's it.
This course challenged me. I had to work hard but I learned a lot. Giles is clear, compassionate, gives good instructions about what he expects, and encourages us to do better. I entered knowing nothing about philosophy and left feeling I knew how important it is. I earned an A in the class because I put in the effort, unlike the previous reviewer.
An amazing course with so much information. Great textbook. When Giles writes about these philosophers, he doesn't just include their ideas he shows how those ideas challenge the very structure of philosophy itself. Helpful feedback on assignments that helped me improve my understanding and writing. Best course at EU.
In this course I learned so much about society, community, injustices, culture. looking into problems and trying to find solutions, not accepting all to be true. This course really opened my eyes to topics I had never fully understood before. Thank you for putting together a course that actually made me think and care about philosophy.
I feel like we got to explore deep topics in a way that made sense and really connected to the real world. Thank you for putting together a course that actually made me think and care about philosophy.
Great course so far. Entertaining lectures, easy to understand readings. Writing essays, no tests. Prof responds quickly to emails and gives good feedback on assignments. This semester has definitely been a challenge, but I am glad I took this course. I recommend Giles to fulfill SearchForHumanValues AOK.
Don't take this class if you think it'll be easy because it is online. Now, it's not extremely difficult, as the amount of work is very fair each week. It's a chapter and 1-2 videos every week, then a discussion post due every second week. I started with an 85% after the first post and have ended with almost a 100%. Put in the effort & it pays off.
I never thought I would enjoy philosophy. But after taking this class, I learned that philosophy isn't just about ancient Greeks with endless arguments, but rather a way of studying the world and its possibilities. I had no idea philosophy was involved in as much of our lives as it is. I enjoyed this semester, and I enjoyed all of the feedback.
I must admit that at the beginning of the semester I was nervous about the course. I always thought I was too cynical and anxious to really look beyond myself and approach philosophy. If I could I'd add a philosophy minor because this course was so interesting.
