so boring that is to say
He is very unclear in his teaching. Material on tests is unexpected but is easy
He knows his stuff, but he is sometimes hard to understand
The class is easy, but it is really boring. If you do the readings you'll get an A no problem
Boring for people not interested in cultural linguistics.
he's really nice, although a bit incomprehensible... and he's got mad charisma (ignore the chalk)
Like linguistics in anthropology is really a sub-field of anthropology. Any idiot can teach his class.
He likes tangents, that is to way tangents in a class of his teaching are something glick finds necessary to use. So did u get the point that he teachs ling? NO? well that what I was trying to tell u. That is his method
He is amazing but only really bright students who do the work will get it.
HILARIOUS!! I'm still telling his stories, and I took his class 2 years ago!
His class sucks
i loved this class & it was really interesting. i didnt do alot of the readings, but still got an A. it was mostly because our TA, Dave, helped us and kicked major ass. Overall i loved his stories even though the lectures were EXTREMELY boring at times
VERY strange guy. Made no sense half the time. Torturous to sit through an hour of him rambling, and completely irrelevant to the material we were tested on. AVOID THIS CLASS AND THIS PROFESSOR!
Best prof I've had here. The bad comments here are weird.
the worst teacher ever. I had an internship with him. HE is very lazy, and likes to take credit for work that you do. He is boring, and you sometimes wonder does he really know much pertaining to his field or work. I dont recommend a class with him at all.
Brilliant, but not for the uninterested. Strong quirks in personality traits makes you love him or hate him. My TA hated him, but I would take any class he teaches. He gets side tracked whenever he notices chalk dust.
Could be interesting if you are interested but overall I'd say a good class to fufill the P or N requirement. Downside is that TA does all grading so hopefully you'll get a good TA (ie Dave).
best part of his class are his stories, other than that i had a hard time understanding what the hell he was saying. if you get a kewl TA that can make all the difference.
Challenging prof. The class is somewhat difficult but very interesting and you will learn a lot if you pay attention. I really liked him.
I can't stand this prof. His teaching style only makes the material more confusing, and his lectures are so boring. The only reason i understand anything in this class in because i have a good TA (Georgia), but this guy is a lazy, snobby, jerk.
He has mostly interesting lectures, good examples during class. A little hard to understand at times but worth it to take the class. He's a pretty nice guy too.
He makes me want to stick a pencil in my eye. He has good intentions, but is a pretentious, verbose & self-absorbed prof. He talks in circles, makes everything more complicated than it is, and avoids students like the plague. Even TA's dont get it.
i hate this man with a passasion. the subject matter is bull**** and should be avoided like the plague. utter contempt for the entire field after a semester in that class.
The bad comments here are weird. He's a great professor, everyone pretty much got in the 90s on the midterm, and his lectures and stories are interesting. He's very cynical but you will learn in this class. It's easy, too.
Dude can go off on tangents and can babble on but sometims has good stories. Didn't find the content of these courses very interesting or clear. Nice guy though, both courses a lot alike
A little difficult to understand. But he's a really nice guy. He'll go over and over the material, but only because he genuinely wants his students to understand it. If you take this class, be sure to take it with TA Dave!
He means well, but speaks to Intro Anthro students like they're fellow anthropologists. The class isn't difficult, but going to discussion and having a good TA are a MUST. That's the only way you'll learn the material, definitely not from his lectures.
Lectures are long and boring. All Glick does is complicate everyday things like speech and actions.Everyone did well on the midtern and final but make sure you get a good TA (DAVE)and go to all your discussions. You'll do well only if you get a good TA!!
his lectures are very, very boring. he confuses the material constantly. make sure you get a goood ta and you'll do fine.
Dr. Glick is a challenging and highly qualified instructor. I disagree with the other comments- maybe they didn't do so hot in the class...?
Glick was great... he made class relatively interesting and as long as you did what he told you to do, you were fine.
Glick is great. His class can be challenging but it's so interesting and he makes classes entertaining. He's really helpful too.
how can you say bad things about glick?! he is the funniest, best, easiest professor i've ever had. his stories are hilarious and he always cracks himself up. getting an A in his class was incredibly easy. great person.
i LOVED the course i took with glick, he is the best teacher and very funny too! it was an easy A and his class was my absolute favorite. i can't wait to take a course with him next semester. a majority of ppl got A's. DON'T DISS GLICK HE IS AWESOME!!
This is a pretty hard class if you don't get the concepts. It can be a little overwhelming, however, Glick is willing to help. He is very funny and class goes by pretty fast.
This prof is awesome!! This class was very interesting and I enjoyed every day that i went. All you have to do is go to lectures and discussion and you will be alright. (The best TA is Georgia!!).
Doesn't explain things very well. Hard to take notes on what he says.
I don' think there is anything great about Prof Glick, and his lectures were boring. Some of the readings were interesting though, it was easy, I got an A without trying. Georgia is the best TA.
Dr. Glick is a highly intelligent individual. I am in love with him, you should be too! DO IT
he thinks hes a freakin stand up comedian... not worth going to class if youre just trying to get an A... just do the readings.
If you want an A, take this class. Easy, but lectures are boring.
Though his lectures are confusing trains of thought, he is clear about what he wants in assignments. The class is a fairly easy A, though the mastery of some abstract concepts is involved. He is pompous of his 'story' of the course structure, though it's merely a plug for diversity appreciation.
So Read four out of the ten readings and got an A-. Just know the frame and the main points of the article and you've got it made. Your Ta is important and does the majority of the grading for the class. Choose Dana!

He's aaaight. Funny. But, not a great professor. He is very unclear and has trouble explaining things in more than one way. Also, a little jaded and cynical. Willing to make you a deal-- doesn't want you to fail.
An amazingly bright man who cares about his students despite the number of us in his course. I can't understand some of the comments here, but then again most of us don't do very much! If you work you can learn a lot here.
Sometimes Glick will speak his own language which makes lectures hard to understand. TA grades you so get a good one. THe papers are ez because u can revise. The FINAL was hard..too many readings and memorizing.
hard but fair. gives as many oppurtunities as possible, but too much learning for a level 100 class. overall decent guy, but u will have to do work and study. struggled too much just for a lousy A-
throught out the entire class, i did not understand one idea glick explained. when i reasd the text and learned on my own, however, i was fine. i went to about 4 lectures and still got an easy A-. do good on essays and get a good ta
Glick is not a good Prof. He is very random and hard to follow. Most people don't come to class because it's a waste of time. I passed this class because of my good TA, but himm...is a big NONO...PLEASE don't take this class !!
Took online Linguistics course...seemed excessively verbose in making basic points, to the point of sometimes being unnecessary...not sure about his teaching still because it was distance learning...kind and understanding in his grading because of the lack of a real classroom environment...always readily available for extra help via e-mail

Omg talk about a guy that can't stay on topic!
I would rather have a prof who taught in a clear manner than one who can tell some funny stories; it's left up to the students to make most of the connections. 5 of his lectures could be done in 1---he's simply too excessive with simple concepts.
This guy is very nice as a person... his classes can be entertaining because of the rants that he will go on. Don't expect very much help from him on most topics because he is reeeaaally unclear about what he's looking for. Nice person, not a great person. If youre interested in Linguistics though... you pretty much have no choice but to take classes with him.

glick is a great person, a great teacher, and hilarious. anytime i've had a problem, glick was there and answers emails very quickly. he is good at time management and seems to relate to students very well. however, i've hardly learned anything from this class and some assignments arent very clear.
a really boring class, he was a funny and friendly guy but the material was so boring, difficult to read and irrelevant to life. good guy, bad subject.
Glick seems like a really nice person. However, he is just an awful teacher. It's really easy to get an A on the midterm and all of the work throughout the semester. But basically the final sucks. You are expected to memorize pages of sentences that seem in a different language. Not fun.
Mistake I made: I didn't expect the comments here to be as true as they are. It's as if he speaks another language, gets distracted easily, and has weird mannerisms. No point in going to lecture, it'll just frustrate you and confuse you almost as much he confuses himself. Having a good TA makes all the difference.
Seems like a really smart guy with good ideas, but he really likes to hear himself talk, even in his writing. There was one assignment that was supposed to be 3-5 pages long. His instructions were a convoluted and single-spaced 6 pages. Really nice, but expect the lectures to be repetitive and unclear.
terrible, he is very disorganized, but if you have a good T.A like Jen, you'll get an A in the class. I guess he is too overwhelming about this subject. I definitely think he needs to take Teaching 101..intro to teching...lol
funny, easy (never got less than a B), just stay up on the easy work
he's been my professor for ling 114,118,3??,249, pretty much responsible for my minor, he's easy and funny, don't be an idiot and you'll have a good time
I liked this guy... he was really funny and a good teacher... and the class was interesting too. The only thing is that this guy LOVES to hear himself talk...
The Frame is the bible for the class. Don't need to show up to lecture except on assignment due dates and his exams are pretty easy. The TAs do everything.
don't overthink this class...it is WAY easier than it seems. glick's definitions and outlines make up the final. listen to the tas.
the man
This guy is so awesome. He tells great stories and i swear it is the only class i have ever been in where i felt it went too fast. He has a story for everything and really keeps u paying attention, i never wanted to fall asleep once! Take this guy!
He starts out funny but eventually you have to stop going to class because they make you want to die right then and there. You don't need the class to get an A, just do the readings/work and go to discussion sections. He seems kind-of sleezy, too.
I love this man!! he is so funny, and he always has a story to tell. makes the class go by so fast, and it is easy material. id go to class even if i didnt have to just to listen to him speak. prob one of the best classes i have taken so far at school, i def recommend it to someone who wants to enjoy class and get an A.
Great Teacher
This teacher is funny, but I had no idea what he was talking about half the time. Likes to hear himself speak, takes for ever to answer a question, making everyone more confused in the process. Still, it's not a hard class if you do the readings (DON'T PUT THEM OFF!) copy the argument mapping examples closely and you'll get an easy A.
The Master. This is the sort of professor that can really blow your mind AND make you laugh. And what a guy! If you're a linguistics major he is 100% by your side & will help you fulfill requirements like no other. Those that get confused by him, there is not much to say for you. Increase your intelligence quotient? Glick classes = purely the best
After spending first 3 weeks complaining about the structure of school and explaining the structure of his course, the class got much better. Makes class laugh a lot (to make it worth it for you to attend). All about getting his hard working students good grades. Extremely responsive to e-mails. Readings are interesting. Would recommend.
interesting prof, funny, really knew what he was talking about. readings were interesting, just dont put them off
Talks a lot about his own thoughts. Could talk for hours. Tells funny stories, but you feel like lecture is kind of pointless.
very easy online course. easy A.
There's some thought provoking stuff covered in his class. Otherwise, the book that he compiled/wrote is a joke and sort of insulting. It clearly wasn't proofread, it is filled with typos. It's hard to care when the teacher doesn't.
took class for gen ed. should be an easy A for most, helps to have a good t.a. first test avg is literally about a 98 and final and hw isn't bad. he is a nice guy and funny at times
I was in stitches practically every class...and still managed to leave with an A and a completely new outlook on linguistics. Fantastic professor who clearly loves what he does.
You really don't need to go to class at as long as you do the little bit of work he assigns outside of it. The only reason you SHOULD go is to hear his funny stories. I hardly attended class and still managed to get an A-. Study for your exams and do the short, tedious exercises and you'll do fine.
it simple, if you can deal with learning something that you will never, and i mean NEVER have any remote use for in the entirety of your life then take this class. make sure you pay attention in class when he teaches us how to complete the exercises, but the other 90% of the words that come out of this guys mouth are from a foreign language.
Glick is really funny. He also is really great about being helpful and available for questions. The class is very do-able. The assignments are just not that interesting. Overall good class though.
Take this class if you want to be able to pretty easily fulfill the gen-ed and learn something semi-interesting along the way. The class demands VERY little of your time (ESPECIALLY the first part of the semester...) and should be an easy A for most people. I probably attended around 10 lectures in all, and ended up with an A in the class.
Glick's ling 114 class is perfect for freshmen. Its pretty easy, however, it is important to reach out. The concepts as well as the essay are confusing. But if you ask, he will edit your papers as many times as you want and that guarantees an A. As far as lectures, they can get boring. My advice is to go to the first 8 and the last weekof lectures
Dr. Glick is one of the most fascinating lecturers I have ever had. He does ramble sometimes, and some parts of his lectures are virtually incomprehensible. His great sense of humor, though, and thorough knowledge of his subject really brings the lecture to another level. This class is the reason why I'm a linguistics major now. Brilliant man.
he is great he is hilarious and tells many stories so in the beginning of the semester he isn't too focused on the work but after the first month he really starts to do work and although it may be a lot it really does prepare you for his exams. He gives review sheets and tells you what will appear he doesn't try to trick you he wants to help you
The class itself isn't very interesting but he is a very intelligent and knowledgeable man. Lectures are not mandatory. The writings for this class are confusing and difficult but he is very willing to help. Conclusion: good professor, stupid class.
Glick is a funny guy with his stories, but he can be quite boring at times. When he speaks it's like he's using another language half of the time, as he speaks very academically. The class is extremely easy. The argument mappings aren't bad if you make an outline, but at first it's hard to know what you're being asked, but he's willing to help you
Douggie was adorable! Funny and lively. A lil bit confusing at times
It took some getting used to the class' very academic concepts, but Glick is truly a very intelligent teacher and you can tell he's both knowledgeable and dedicated to his field. Witty sense of humor and stories, but still your deeper understanding will probably come from a TA. Not the easiest class, but a very sharp prof. with a lot to share.
Useless professor. Don't go to lecture - he doesn't take attendance, rambles on and on about nothing, and everything you need to know for first test can be learned from the text and your TA. Memorize the terms and you'll ace the first test. Argument mappings are confusing at first but once again, if you get a good TA you're all set. VERY easy A.
towards the beginning he was very confusing and only really went over the frame which is hat the first exam is on and during this time you'll need to attend discussion later on you'll have 2projects and presnt them in discuson and attend class to know the argument mappings of each reading which is on the final. just read & study definitions.
Pretty much the most confusing class I've ever taken. He is quite a funny guy, but the terms and material are so confusing. Up to this day, I have absolutely no idea what we've been studying. And as far as everyone saying it was an easy A, I would hope so, but from what I've seen from my TA, I don't stand a chance.
So, do you want to spend hours listening to a middle-aged man spout incomprehensible nonsense? Want to read some pseudo-intellectuals' professional opinions about linguistic phenomena? Want to memorize a long set of "academic" terms that virtually no one uses (even in academia)? If you answered yes to any of these questions, take LING 114.
The first half of the semseter, don't bother going to lecture; discussion and the textbook will teach you more. Argument mappings are difficult, so don't save them to the last minute, especially since the TAs are very helpful. Easy gen ed.
funny, but no interest in attending class. class is very boring. t.a's are really helpful and the teacher is really disorganized. he's one of the most unorganized teacher. we didn't do anything for first 2 weeks (not complaining) and kept changing around the schedule...
Dr. Glick is one of the funniest and most brilliant professors I've ever studied under. He really has a deep understanding of his subject material, but you have to pay attention to understand what he's talking about, as many of the concepts are abstract. He's very fair and receptive to questions.
What everyone is saying is true… he RAMBLES! And his explanations are useless… don't worry if you don't understand anything he says, because you'll learn everything from the (mandatory) exercises and going over them in each class
You don't need to show up to lecture or pay attention. He gives you all the information on the tests THROUGH THE TEXT. If you read you can get an A. Don't think you can get away with skimming though!
The class is a joke. It is based around memorizing definitions of terms that he made up and definitions that he made up. Absolutely no real world application.
This class is the most boring, complex, abstract, awful class I've ever taken. I thought we would be learning about actual linguistic terms, like phonemes and grammar and the actual ways people physically speak. Instead, I have to try to comprehend some pseudo-intellectual's hifalutin nonsense. It's all too erudite and ridiculous for me. STAY AWAY!
He's a pretty chill guy. Not going to lie; his lectures were kinda boring, but the class itself was enjoyable over all, and easy too. He does a good job of teaching you what you need to know.
Absolutely no need to show up to lecture besides to hand in argument mappings. Just read the textbook (that he wrote) and memorize his made up vocabulary and its an easy A. Argument mappings are kind of confusing at first but TAs are very helpful if you ask for it. As long as you show up to discussion and do assignments you'll have an A.
Class is entirely based off of the syllabus. If you read the instructions you'll do well. Glick always lets out early and you don't always have to go to his lectures. He is very approachable and if you go to talk to him he will be very helpful .
Honestly, his rating on here doesn't even matter because the quality of your TA is really what'll make or break your grade. Don't expect to understand anything he says in lecture. Hand in papers, teach yourself from the textbook, read the articles, and you'll get an A. I stopped showing up to lecture after the first test, and I still got an A.
"Show up and pass" is an understatement. I did not show up to lecture the entire semester and got an A. Go to the discussions, and they'll tell you everything. My advice? If you need to overload one semester, take this class as one. Glick is a v good professor, but he also writes the textbook and makes you pay for it, which I didn't think was right
If you want to take a gen ed that will teach you something you can apply in the real world, don't take this class. The professor makes up his own vocabulary and we have to apply it to everything we do in class. And after the semester is over all of those terms you've learn become useless. This class is just a freshman writing seminar in disguise.
no need to go to class. he just spews some random stuff that isn't applicable to the real world. the 3 argument mappings are easy and you get a chance to redo it for a bump in the grade. 2 discussion presentations. TAs barely understand the class either. its fine though, just wing it and you will end up with an A or A-.
Glick talks a lot, and if you go to class you'll start to pick up on his lingo and his train of thought which makes the class easy. You'll probably end up doing all the writing assignments the night before they're due and if you copy the structure of his model essay you'll do very well. Take this class remotely seriously and you'll do fine.
Pretty easy but the entire class structure is confusing. Very smart but doesn't think the same way as most people. His writing assignments are like nothing you've seen before or will see again. Group presentations are annoying. Tests are pretty easy as long as you read the frame and articles. Overall an easy A as long as you have a good TA.
Very useless class. Half of the material is made up by him. He writes the textbook and owns it, then makes it mandatory for you to buy his book. Not even a class it's more like a personal scheme for him. Class material doesn't make sense and you forget it the second the class ends.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you're not a Linguistics or Anthro major. The two gen eds aren't worth it. The other reviews are right, he makes his material up himself and most of it doesn't even translate into the real world. 3 argument maps (pretty easy and you have the chance to revise later), 1 midterm and 1 final. Worst class I've taken here.
Not very interesting but easy class for a gen ed. Textbook is written by Glick but still required to purchase. Class includes 1 test, 3 written papers, 2 powerpoint presentations done in section & final. Grading criteria is very clear and allows rewrites for papers. Tests are very structured & made clear exactly what you need to know.
I took Language, culture, and communications in the US, oh how I was deceived. Boring, but not the worse. Don't need to go to class the first month and a half, do the papers and group projects. Show up to discussion and study for the first test, and for the final he tells what you need to know every class for the last month of the class.
This class was an easy A. The class is based off stuff he made up but you really don't have to go till the last month & the work is minimal. If you know someone who already took the class get his argument mapping outlines & it'll be an almost no effort class. Do the LxC program if offered, minimal effort & easier than discussion presentations.
He's a funny guy and is helpful as well. He will give handouts before exam which make it easier.
Prof. Glick is low-key very funny. He's generally boring when he lectures, but he slips in some quality jokes here and there if you pay attention. The class is extremely easy, and the material is interesting. Would recommend.
I, personally, LOVE Glick. He's an odd man and goes off topic quite often, but he knows the material well. He also gives review sheets right before an exam that tell you basically everything you need to know as well as clearly explaining the structure of the exam. I had Glick for LING114 as well. He truly & genuinely wants his students to do well.
good professor, he's very approachable but his lectures are extremely confusing at times. if you follow the syllabus and study 5-6 hours before every test youll be fine.
This prof is very funny, intelligent and doesn't take the course too seriously. You have three papers, midterm, final and a presentation in your discussion. All the papers your able to re write and no attendance in lectures. One/two presentations that are extremely easy (bc its also an O credit).
Dr. Glick is a hilarious professor, though some may not understand his brand of humor. It tends to be more academic and poking fun at his age. He loves participating students who ask him questions, just taking an interest in the class material puts you at the top of his list. He's always so accessible for office hours and gives great feedback.
Professor Glick makes up his own terms and definitions, and he defines many of these terms with other made up terms. His concepts are unnecessarily confusing, and throughout the semester many of us were wondering how it was possible to pass this course. Needless to say, he gives review sheets that lay out how to ace his tests, so I got an A.
Extremely easy class, he and the TAs provide exam reviews before the midterm and final so you're definitely sure what will appear on the exam. Has a lot of made up terms on the required textbook, which he himself wrote. Only relatively hard thing is the three argument mappings, which are 3 essays you have to write to basically pass the course.
The class is an easy A. Just read the passages and study what he tells you to study and you'll do fine. You have three essays for the semester, but I did them all the day they were due and still got an A. Glick just reads from the textbook and shows you videos in class, so the lecture isn't that mandatory.
I took this class for my Pluralism Gen Ed. I would recommend taking this course. I took the LxC subcourse (French) also, which I would also recommend since you can continue a language study and it gets you out of the presentations. Pretty straight forward. 3 papers but you get to choose which ones fit your schedule best out of a group.
Honestly I loved him. He was kind of boring as a lecturer, but the class was so simple. My TA didnt grade that well so it was kind of annoying. I sat with him for one of my papers and he told me it was great and my TA gave me a B. The 2 Tests were straight forward. Definitely an easy A
He provides a review for every test, it is quite helpful. In order to do well in the class you need to be good at memorizing stuff. A lot of the reading of the reading are unnecessary but there is about 15 pages before all classes and an assignment due before all classes.
Even though you don't need to go to lecture I would seriously recommend going in the beginning/end of the semester for the content for Exam 1 and the Final. Argument mappings were WAY harder than I thought, took a lot of time to learn how to write them. Exams are easy if you study the right material (he tells you in class). Try to get a good TA!!!
Glick is definitely a meme of a prof. The most monotone man you'll ever meet. The class is composed of two exams, 3 flexible papers "argument mappings", and two group presentations. He gives basically everything you need to know for both exams. Get a good TA and you'll be set.
Definitely go to class around exams!! He spells out so clearly what is going to be on the test. He also cancels class a ton. My TA honestly made the course and made everything much clearer, but if you dont like your TA, the textbook is also super clear. The readings kinda sucked and took awhile, but I did very well on all of the papers with them.
Glick is awesome! He cares a lot about his students and is very open to answering all sorts of questions in class and over email. His lectures are a bit monotone but for this class all you need to do is read the textbook and its pretty straightforward (and its not a lot of reading). He's just a funny guy. Would definitely recommend taking his class
Easy A, but not worth it. I went into this class with the most open mind possible, but I cant express just how little you will learn, and how unrewarding it is. This whole class is common sense, but worded as complex and confusing as possible. You're better off taking something harder but more interesting.
Extremely monotone but spells out exactly what is on the two exams and explains all the readings. Argument mappings (which are a big part of the grade) are definitely difficult and time consuming but I did them the day before and didn't get below a 95. Online version of this class was definitely worth doing for the gen ed
Such as easy A class and Glick is a sweet man. I honestly did none of the readings except the ones I did the argument maps for and barely attended his lectures and got an A. Take this instead of a history class Glick is great!!
Dr. Glick is a bit hard to listen to because he has a very monotone voice but once you get past that his lectures are very easy and he is very clear about what you need to know. The TAs are usually helpful as well. I also really liked our textbook, very easy to read and understand.
Possibly the most boring professor you will ever have but it's an easy A, so might as well take this class if you need the credit!
Douglas Glick is such a bestie. Greatest of all time. This man is so wonderfully kind and understanding it's incredible. Truly one of the chillest professors I've ever had, you can tell he really loves what he does and enjoys the subject. Don't be afraid to ask for help, an extension, etc., he cares about his students and is v accessible/flexible!
Professor Glick is pretty monotone, but if you are listening, he is really funny. He starts off slow and eases you into the class, and will integrate a bunch of different vocabulary words that are new to almost everyone, so be ready to read if you need to understand more. It is 90% interesting so don't be worried about reading about boring stuff.
Yes for GenEd (easiest one i've taken, i highly recommend) Yes for lecture (but he sounds boring? okay but he's very clear and to the point) Yes for textbook (easy to read, clear and concise, many exmpls, stay on top of it!) Yes for HW's (you can skip like 3 before it's costing) meh for TA's (not the best at answering questions, ask the prof inst
