he's a kinda weird, but he makes o-chem more interesting
Very enthusiastic
can't get what the hell he's sayin most of the time, book's a lot clearer
you dont have a choice
great professor
Great teacher, challenging tests, but allows class to lag with too many ques.
Good teacher and teaches well
grotjahn made this easy class even easier
if you have to take it, take him! he makes every effort to help you understand.
allowed class to fall behind, tests were fun to take
Best Chem Prof Around,Makes Things Very Clear If You Ask!
Grotjahn is the coolest of the cool. He brings his personality into one of the most difficult subjects present in the sciences. He loves to help people and have he or she understand organic. Take him if he is teaching..!! Just keep up on the info...
professor always unprepared, lecture topics seem random, does not grade all assignments and then assigns final grades subjectively, does not show up for appointments
prepare to teach yourself, no structured lectures, i suggest someone else besides this fruit
He guides you through self directed learning, but O chem is hard to teach to yourself! expect to do a lot of work. He tries to help, but he doen't lecture. Ask questions- he likes that.
just dont take it w/ him.... he's horrible
absolute worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't lecture. Expect to learn ochem by yourself.
Well o chem is tough as it is, and Grotjahn decided to teach this class by having us do problems out of the book and come in and ask him questions. it works if you do that regularly, otherwise don't come to class. a lot of the people who complain haven't ever asked a ? in class.
He was awsome in 231, but not to awsome in 431... What up with that dude???
he really knows his stuff when he teaches... but oh wait.. he doesn't teach! apparently he feels that u needed to learn ochem on your own and he'll just sit back, show up to class late, answer 2 questions per class and reel in the nice professor paychecks for doing nothing... what a life!
It's a Hard Subject !!! So you're expected to be an active student. Don't sit back and wait for someone to tell you what to do. On the good side, the curve for an A is 75-100% and get to drop 1 test...good luck!
This guy is a complete tenure ****! His job is safe so he doesn't do****. O Chem is hard to start with and you need a teacher to teach you, not to point to the book and say his cute little acronym for B.O.O.K. (Bound Optimumly Organized Knowledge)... use it... His class is a waste of time. If you get him, get a tutor.
Dr. Grotjahn is the best ever!! He is the best at answering one's questions as well as providing a clear explanation when need be. He does want you to think things out for yourself....which is the way things are supposed to go. I LOVE CHEMISTRY!!
Shitty teacher, i usually can deal with crappy teachers, but this guy didnt even teach! He expected everyone to learn 2nd semester Ochem without any lectures at all.
This teacher does not like to teach. You basically teach yourself from the book. Every other lecture is Question day in which he manages to answer about 2 problems. There is no structure to his lectures what so ever.
worst teacher I have ever had.U have to teach yourself ochem from the book cuz he says its our background info. Every other day is 'lecture'day,he doesnt even teach on these days & every other day students ask ?s when you ask him a? he never directly answers it and takes forever doing it, and usually doesnt know how to answer it&has to think boutit
This class is super hard--you have to teach yourself the book, but the book makes NO sense. My advice, get a tutor from the beginning of the semester. Grotjahn doesn't prepare his lectures very well and is confusing.
he is very smart and funny. organic chemistry is going to be hard no matter what instructor you have. he is very helpful
Dr. Grotjahn is awesome. Of course it's hard, it's organic chemistry. If you read the book and do lots of problems, you'll will do fine. Dr. G will sit and explain things to you over and over again and never make you feel stupid. He is willing to help if you are willing to do a little work. The curve is phat, so dont worry about it.
Horrible Lectures. im not sure if they are even considered lectures. this is a hard class. so dont expect the teacher to make tht much of a difference. dedicate your LIFE to this or else you will do bad. sorry but its true. grotjahn sucked in my opinion. id pass on him being my teacher EVER again. Reji the Chem 231 TA is the best EVER!! love ya rej
of course this is a hard class but Dr G makes it harder! he doesnt even lecture. he covers hardly any of the material we are responsible for and spends most his time for "discussion" which isnt helpful if you dont understand anything.
His teaching style require independent studying from the student. He allows much class time for asking questions which helps if you keep up with the text (a must!). Good lecturer on the occassion he does. Got an A. My acctual percent was an 80% not counting the extra credit. Get to drop a test. Put in at least 12 hrs a week. Curve is generous.
It doesn't matter who teaches this course, it's effing hard. I had this guy the 2nd time after getting a C- with Cole. Although I still don't feel like I learned much, Grotjahn at least seems to mean well for his students, and is a nice, helpful guy. Just remember everyone else is sucking as much as you, and the curves are generous.
This man should not be able to teach Chemistry majors. He skips NMR and provides no fundamental basis to build upon! He caters to the low end of the class. I learned everything on my own and with the tutor! Why do I have to pay to teach myself?? The question sessions are playgrounds for the dumb and show-offs (pre-meds). AVOID CHEM MAJORS!!!
Dr. Grotjahn is by far my favorite chemistry teacher. I think he's the best.
He is the best and knows how to lecture. Just because most people can't get off their ass and not study doesn't mean that the prof is bad. He rocks.
Dr. G. is a nice professor. However, he doesn't know how to teach. There's no structure on his lectures and he is so unorganized. O-chem is just really hard especially for those who don't appreciate it. Dr. G. is generous with his help but he just doesn't know how to teach. Take someone else if possible. I don't recommend him if you want an A
WOW! Dr. Grotjahn is an amazing professor. Seminar style discussions instead of lectures so you LEARN the material and don't just listen to him talk. Great curve, exams take studying but are passable. I easily got an A. Plus his lectures got me interested in chemical research which I never thought possible when I started the class.
absolute worst chem professor in SDSU. he cares more about learning his students names than teaching organic chemistry. there are better profs. at SDSU that can do a whole lot better job at teaching o'chem than he can.
The best ever.
Dr. G is great! He truly cares about O-chem, is a well respected researcher in the chemistry community, and knows his stuff left and right. He doesn't have the largest chem lab on campus for nothing. Take his class and you will see that as long as you study and ask for his help, you will LEARN organic chem.
I'm not sure what lecture the other students attended, but I must have missed those. This professor teaches, if you want to call it that, by Q&A. You teach yourself the material, he just kind of stands up at the board and makes ridiculous jokes. If you're mindful of your grade, care about actually learning the material, STAY AWAY!Absolute worst!
He is a nice guy. You really need to study the book and understand the material. I don't like his lectures. I had to learn on my own.
hard class, but practice a lot and make flash cards and go to office hours he's helpful.
he doesn't teach at all. you have to teach yourself if you want to pass the class.
Seriously take the other professor. He claims his teaching is seminar-style(meaning you ask ?s & he answers),but that's just his excuse not to teach and he uses the whole class time answering like 2 questions. The class averages were ridiculously low(like 40-60%).He curves the class but its still insane unless you dedicate your whole life 2 O-chem
He knows O Chem but has NO IDEA how to teach it. Curve is good but that is just because no one knows what they are doing! Go to class because you get A LITTLE more information than if you do it alone. Expect to work hard just to pass...
During lecture he just answers questions, but he has trouble being clear and precise, and his answers can take him a long time to explain. the class is basically teach yourself...your textbook is going to be your best friend if you have grotjahn as a teacher. test averages were between 40-60%. the lab is ridiculously hard and stressful
He has no formal teaching system. You come to class, ask questions and he will answer that is his style. He knows Ochem but he doesnt know how to teach. He will spend 30mins on 1 question and unclear how to explain it. This class requires you to teach yourself to acutally pass. Hes the worst out of all the ochem teach. Dont take him!
Chemistry is hard, end of story and if you expect a teacher to feed it to you with a teaspoon then this class will be hard for you. Dr. Grotjahn is a great teacher only if you read the sections he gives you before the lecture. He has a pretty mean curve so don't be surprised if you get below 50%. Go to class prepared with questions.
Not a great professor - really terrible at teaching. Will spend the whole class period answering one show off's questions. This class is realllly tough & u have to teach yourself. Make sure its your only class and you don't have a job cause it will consume your lif! Got a C with a B,C,F,F,F on exams and A in lab. He drops lowest test.
This guy should not be responsible for teaching such a difficult class. He doesn't lecture, so you have to be 100% self taught and bring only questions to class. I wish I could go back in time and postpone taking this class with someone else...even if it screwed up my grand plan. He is a horrible teacher and can't commit to a grading method.
I love Dr. Grotjahn. He is the greatest Organic Prof I've ever had. Go to class and abide by what he says...and you will be fine!
This guy is terrible. Totally a self-taught class. Pretty much everyone fails except for a few students. His TA's even know he's a horrible professor. My test scores were F, F, F, F, A, F and I got a C due to the huge curve. I'm gonna take the class(431) again w/ Bergdahl since I didn't learn one thing w/ Grotjahn.
Dr. Grotjahn's teaching style is very relaxed, which makes learning easier.Read book, do problems in book,go to office hours, and ask questions and you will do well and actually learn the material. Need to get into book. He works out problems on board which is how you also learn (not on PDF! as some profs. do).
He's a nice guy, but he really doesn't know how to teach. There will be material on the exams that he never went over in lecture, so be prepared to teach yourself. The curve will definitely save you, I went from a C to an A in the end. If possible take Bergdahl or McAplpine.
Dr G is a very very nice person. I can't believe people are bashing him, during the fall 08, his father passed away so the class became unorganized. And he did make it up by making a huge curve, nearly passing everyone. He is a brilliant man and o-chem is just a really hard class.
Cant teach chem very well. I tried so hard to keep up w/the class and read, and studied so much for the tests, but I give up! His lectures are just a huge ramble over 2 peoples weird irrelevant questions, and his tests are not straightforward. I spent over a week studying for an exam and I still failed b/c he asks a lot of trick questions.
horrible professor. has NO idea how to teach the class. he's really random and all over the place. if you take him, prepare to teach yourself the class. the curve is huge so most will pass in the end. avoid taking him if possible!
this class was hard because he doesn't teach much and you have to teach yourself by reading the book. every test is cumulative so stay on top of the reading.his tests are hard but they really help you learn when it comes time for the final.there are always people that throw off the curve.the online wiley homework was a waste of 80 dollars.
I enjoyed this class a lot. People complain about organic chemistry because they want to be spoon-fed with information. Well, believe it or not, you're in college. The professor simply don't have the time to finish everything in 3 hours per week. Dr. G is very good at explaining things. The class is pretty easy if you just study and practice!
There is no way around the fact that this is just a hard class with hard material. This prof isn't a very hard teacher. Be prepaired to read the book and do all the practice problems. He assigns assignments through a website that are helpful. Tests are hard. Tests 2-5 have TONS of review so make sure to review old the previous tests you've taken.
Good professor, if you're willing to learn that is. Read the textbook, do homework, and ask questions. Read. Read. Seriously, READ. Oh, Curve will help a lot.
Dr. Grotjahn is a genius and definitely knows his organic chemistry. He just has a terrible teaching style.
How to get an A. Average over 100pts out of 150 on each midterm. One midterm is dropped. Get over 150 out of 250 on the final and you'll get the A with the curve. Lecture is bad but you should still go. Dont expect to be taught this stuff, because it requires you to learn it from the book. His HW is hard but its good study before the tests.
This is obviously a very hard class. But Grotjahn doesnt do much to make it easier. Tests are harder than hell and nothing like the online homework. Tests are cummulative. Curve is insane, although he doesn't commit to a set curve until the end of the semester. You must learn EVERYTHING from the book because he literally will go over 5% of material
This class is obviously extremely hard. And you'll only understand the material from lecture if you read the material before class. The test are extremely hard, so don't be surprised if you get a 75/150 on the first test. You can drop 1 test. Theres about 1 hw assignments per week (helpful). Test is mostly based on the book and is irrelevant to hw
No doubt the hardest class I have ever had. The class average on exams are usually a D or an F! I barely passed with a C thanks to the extra credit. I failed to attend class due to Grotjahns horrible jokes and bad teaching style. The amount of material is overwhelming. Lab is really easy though on the bright side!
lec is not thorough at times , but u shuld definitely hav the reading done prior to class. Attend all lecs. Make sure to do the hwk online. If you dont understand how to do them ask for help in lec or office hrs. Go over the pract exams he posts on BB. He uses some questions from the previous exam on the next exam, so go over ur past exams.
He cares about O-chem but does not know how to teach the subject the class average on tests was 60/150!Stay AWAY
Lecture classes are a waste of time... you get more confused... he is all over the place, and can't understand a thing he says... doesn't explain anything... most things on test, he doesn't go over in class... so you are on your own....
Get ready to teach yourself everything the material is hard and he didn't cover any of it clearly. His lectures are long and it can be hard to stay focussed and there's not nearly enough practice material given to do well on the exams the average scored for the 4 midterms were 85150, 70150, 60150 and 58150 despite low exam scores small curve
Hardest class ive taken so far, switched off professors mid semester but grotjahn is not at all a good prof. He is smart but quite dreadful at staying on topic and getting the point across. This class is a lot of material in a short period of time. You're better off reading the chapters yourself and teaching yourself.K.A helps a lot.
1st Test: 70% 2nd test 50% 3rd test 35% 4th test 20% Final 30% Final grade: C He drops your lowest test score. I honestly did not deserve to pass this class because I did not attend class NOR read the book at all as you can tell by my test scores. HARD CLASS. You will pass if you do hw and extra credit regardless of test scores.
I ended up getting the highest grade on the final and 2 of the 4 midterms. I did that well by reading the textbook and my doing the back problems a couple of weeks before the exam. Everyone brought up here that class average was below 50% but if they just put in as much effort as the class deserves maybe things would of changed for them.
How I got an A: Read the book, did the problems, attended office hours. All 4 midterms & final are cumulative so go over your past mistakes cz they WILL come back (saves you tons of points). HW is not related to the exams. Hes a terrible teacher, very confusing, but that doesn't cover the fact that hes a genius. He is also friendly and approachable
Pros: He's kind and approachable. Very smart guy and passionate. Cons: Cannot teach, homework is not related to exams, exam averages are extremely low, class is a waste of time, studying more than you need, and online hw on WileyPlus will drive you insane. Take with Bergdahl, even if it's over summer. I wish I decided to. Curve gods save me, plzz
As others have said, he's very intelligent, but he cannot teach. If collecting a paycheck via absolute minimum work was an Olympic sport, Douglas Grotjahn would be a gold medal winner year after year. Do NOT take organic chemistry with him, you will learn from the book and TA's than him. He was also gone for a good month of the semester.
Grotjahn is passionate about his research , but he REALLY does not know how to teach a class! I'll be honest, about 30 students would show up during his lectures, whatever he teaches in class even if he does not cover it during lectures will still be on the exams, and the averages were always an F. What I recommend: USE CLUTCH PREP! My grade: A+ .
I've had MANY horrible professors at SDSU, but I just accept my it and study everything MYSELF (I have a 4.0). I say this because a lot of students complain about teachers when they get bad grades, but that's just THEIR fault for doing poorly. But THIS is diff - LOADS of irrelevant HW and exams that do not reflect the material. WORST PROF EVER.
He doesn't cover much of the material in class because he goes off on some other topic that only confuses you more, let alone the answers he gives which never answer what the question was. All of his powerpoints are from Wiley Plus, and you are forced to get Wiley as well which comes with the book that is way more helpful than he is.
I don't doubt that Dr. Grotjahn knows what he's talking about, he just isn't the best teacher. He cannot clearly explain answers to the questions you ask and he is very hard to learn from. He says you can debate your exam grade but honestly will not change your points even if you are right. He wants it to be done how he does it. Also, read the text
Probably knows what he's talking about but couldn't explain it to anyone if his life depended on it. Lecture is completely useless. Recommend a tutor or you're screwed.
Lecture is absolutely useless. Groddy is undoubtedly smart but there is a certain intelligence in being able to explain a complex subject in simple terms that he does not possess. Best lectures were taught by students in the master's programs. I only got an A because of my tutors.
Avoid taking Organic Chemistry with Grotjahn. His lectures are very unhelpful (I stopped going after exam 2), he randomly assigns a BUNCH of homework with no warning. I read the ENTIRE textbook, worked on homework every day for hours, and essentially sold my soul to this class. Yes, I got an A, but it was so much worse than it needed to be.
Very smart guy but had an EXTREMELY difficult time articulating his thoughts. Didn't do a problem on the board in class until the end of March. Don't take him if you can help it but if you have to READ and get a tutor ASAP!!!!!
Very nice and respected professor. You should do practice problems and homework + sample exams and you will have very high chance to have high grade. Boring lectures though that's why I deducted 1 point. Still you can ask him anything on office hours and he will answers to each and every question fully.
I study at SDSU Georgia campus where we don't have an option to pick a professor we'd like to have. So Chem432 is the second class I take with professor Grotjahn. I have to say that he really is a nice person and knowledgeable. but as a professor... if it was up to me I'd NEVER EVER take his class ever again.
Professor Douglas Grotjahn is extremely knowledgeable and smart professor. I am currently taking chem 432 (I failed last year) with him online and professor Ani Goletiani at SDSU Georgian Campus. As I see, Grotjahn is really underscored professor. Maybe angry students come here and write negative reviews. Orgo is hard Grotjahn is cool professor.
Actually maybe he is knowledgeable prof but I could never listen to his extremely boring lectures. Biggest weakness of his course is that no matter how hard I tried to cover all the things that was in the textbook I still came across absolutely irrelevant things in exams. Unfortunately I have to take his course again
Worst professor I have EVER taken at SDSU. People ask him questions and he stands silent and says "the book goes over it. Come to office hours." Super unclear, scattered lecture style. If you can take Bergdahl over Grotjahn DO IT. If you want to do well in this class, the book is your best friend. I have learned more from the book and YouTube.
No joke, worst chemistry professor in SDSU. Cannot explain any concept even if his life depended on it, you pretty much rely on the book because he has a very scattered lecture. You will learn more from watching youtube videos and the only point of going to lecture are pop quizzes.
I had the misfortune of having to "attend" his online lectures from SDSU Georgia campus. The lectures are impossible to watch due to his lacking oratorical skills. The text book we had was atrocious. It felt like someone read an actual chemistry book and wrote a blog-post about it and called it a book. He also did not provide final score grading.
He does try to answer questions but he is so unorganized, the book is horrible and he gave so much HW on wiley (released the week of the exam), on orion, and on BACON. He was gone for more than half the semester and did not communicate with the professors who lectured in his place, his exams were fair, i did khan academy to actually learn something
Don't take him if you have the option of taking another professor instead! He is a very boring lecturer and doesn't answer questions well. His review sessions for exams are confusing. On exams, he expects you to know a lot more than what he lectures about. The textbook sucks! If you really have to take his class, invest in outside review sessions.
Organic chemistry needs mastering in mechanisms and behavior of atoms, so the exams test your ability to use your skills. Grotjahn knows his subject very well, but you need different viewpoint to understand the whole staff.
He is extremely confusing ! He rushes through lecture. Never has time to answer questions. Instead hell provide some cheap "answer" and waste more time asking if he answered your question than actually taking the time to answer someones question. During office hours everything is recorded so goodluck asking about your grade (everyone sees it)
If I could Id rate this whole deportment w a 0. This professor in particular, while he is admittedly very knowledgeable of the subject, cannot teach to save his life. And his exams are far more difficult than they need to be. And while I know hes not in charge of the lab, there was very little coordination between the two
Nice guy but sucks at teaching.
-Class is curved HEAVILY (70% was an A) -GO TO ALL SI SESSIONS YOU CAN. They are incredibly helpful -Read the book -Go to Kris' tutoring sessions -If you can find a different professor, do so. Grotjahn is kind and smart but not a great teacher -Don't stress. I thought I was failing the whole year and ended with an A! :)
Horrible teacher, honestly one of the worst if not the worst teacher Ive ever had. His lectures make zero sense as he expects the students to already be knowledge about the subject. Not very helpful with questions as sometimes he doesnt even know the answer. Tests are impossible and there were 5 total including the final. Do not take if possible!
I took Grotjahn for Chem 232 & 432. Ochem is hard regardless of the prof so you NEED to study. The material we learned in 232 was about the same as the other profs, but 432 material is very different. G is not the best, but he is sweet & he curves the class a lot. I didn't choose to take him again for 432, but I also didn't not take it bc of him.
