he is one of those professors who does the "All of the above" 'Some of the above" and "none of the above" type of test questions.I was frustrated because of his tests.they are geared to drive you insane, especially if you look at the results and find that one of his questions stumped you.Frustrating
Seemed confused when asked a question, he knows his stuff just hard to relate what you don't understand to him. He's so geeky he's actually funny. Final was comprehensive but he lets you drop a test including the final if thats your low. Overall good class and prof. Easy to get an A

It was the hardest class of my life
THis class was not to hard..he just put things on the test that he didn't review enough. If it wasn't for the SI sessions, I would have not done well.
Pretty easy class if you study before a test. He's pretty entertaining too.
He's a pretty cool guy and he really wants to go out of his way to make sure that you pass and get a good grade. His classes are really entertaining because he makes jokes and really has a passion for what he's teaching.
I really liked his class, review before the tests and you'll do fine.
He will very unhelpful!! Is on some sort of power trip of I'm the high and mighty college professor! Will NOT work with any type of conflicts with his class no mattar how large it is! Was very frusterateing to work with. The class was not too hard.
funny
If all professors were like him, this would be a better school. He loves to teach and is very easy to understand if you do your part. its the way college should be
Very helpful
Doug Harris is the Mr. Rogers of the chemistry department. His goody-two shoes demeanor and humorous approach made this a pleasant class. He is stubbornly unhelpful--asking questions was pointless. He followed the text religiously so the practice exams on the text website saved my butt. This class was an easy A if you did the work.
I must say I have never taken a Chem. Class before but after his i dont know why everyone hates chem. Its not bad at all and yeah he gives you plenty of prep with the practice exams
He has a great personality, you need to sit toward the front to see his little smile. Attendence isn't mandatory if you read the book. But you should go because it is very entertaining.
Harris is a great professor. He is really nerdy funny and knows his stuff inside and out. His tests are tough but he gives plenty of opportunity to ask questions about he material. He also does a lot of experiments in class to keep you interested.
Very good teacher, knowledgeable, and able to explain things in a clear and simple manner. I found his exams very easy, yet I still learned a lot. He does a very good job of following the text without making it boring or repetitive.
I hate chemistry and dont understand it, but Dr. harris has somehow made it understandable and enjoyable. very good at teaching the material. his practice exams are pretty much the same as his real exams.all the test questions come from his lectures so there is no need to buy the course textbook. i would definitley reccommend him.
IMO, Harris is a horrible teacher. He addresses the class like they're a bunch of 2-year-olds, with comments like "Do you guys like applesauce? How about devil's food cake, that's my favorite!" He takes so long to make a point that by the time it's made, everyone stopped paying attention. Tough tests, poor lecturing, not a fun class.
Really funny guy. Explains everything really well and tests are easy if you study material and do practice tests. Great class!
I started out really enjoying the class & the professor but he got really annoying. He got off on tangents a lot which got confusing. His tests started out easy & got more difficult as the semester went on. I had to put in A LOT of time in out of class in order to get a good grade. The prof was enthusiastic about the subject...almost too much.
One of the most helpful professors I've ever had.
He is a good teacher. He had great energy and love for chemistry. This class is not challenging. His tests are pretty straight forward.
I had Dr. Harris for summer Chem 1210. He was a a great teacher, and his quizzes and tests were very straightforward. He only tested on things we did in class. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
LIKE: -Tests directly from slides -Textbook only necessary for extra help if needed -Posts slides online -Willing to give extra help if you need it -First time I actually understand Chemistry DISLIKE: -Corny jokes - Says "there" in unnecessary places I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!
Subject matter has some dry points, but this professor kept things moving enough that it was hard to get bored. Overall, a great class, and this professor made it all the more enjoyable.
Okay, I think Chemistry is such a dry topic, but at the same time, I cannot believe this guy is real! He's almost too good to be true. All in one day he quoted (and correctly I might add) Harry Potter, Finding Nemo, and Emperor's New Groove. Hilarious guy who keeps the class interesting. However, he does say "there" after each sentence.
Great professor. More than willing to help if you have questions and makes sure you understand the content. Tests are straightforward and based on what was learned in class. Really nice guy and keeps class interesting and entertaining. I'd recommend him to anyone, even if you don't like chemistry.
Doug Harris is a great instructor! He is the best at teaching chemistry to all levels of beginning students, especially those with no chem background. The first test is easy, and then the others hit you. Study a lot and always show up to class, as he doesn't post review answers.
Professor Harris is a pro at teaching Chemistry. He goes off of the publisher's powerpoints. I thought it was okay to miss class because of this but he explains things amazingly well so it is definitely in your best interest to attend as I failed one of my exams from not going to class and aced the others.
The teacher seems to love what he does, but he gets off on such random random tangents that just make you not want to pay attention, and uses the word there in random places and way too much. He said it 148 times in less then 45 minutes.
Doctor Harris is great! He drops one of your five exam scores, including the final. Like already said, the slides are online but still go to class becuase he explains concepts so well. Use the slides and practice tests to get ready for exams, and also read and do the text book problems, and you will do awesome in this class!
I could count on one finger the total MINUTES Harris spent in our lab. The instructions and procedures for lab were confusing and too long. Lab was taught by a graduate student completely. Must be nice to be a professor and have graduate students do all the work! The lab was useless but is required. Overall the class is fairly easy.
He does well with making the subject understandable. He does a lot of practice problems in class and reserves the first 10 minutes of each class to answer questions. However, he does tend to get off topic...A LOT. Tests are only 25 questions, but he will drop the lowest. I didn't go to the last week of class or take the final and I'm getting an A.
Very good professor. He does have cheesy jokes he loves to tell, but he cares about his students and tries to help you do well. Explains things so you can understand and will answer any question you have.
Good professor. Taught straight from the powerpoint slides, so attendance isn't necessarily important if you can get incentive to study on your own. Super cheesy jokes, and an all-around good guy. Highly recommend!
No homework, easy tests, however, tests and quizzes make up your entire grade. There are practice tests online that are basically the exact same as the test he gives out in class.
Great teacher! SO HOT!!!! I get distracted in class because I day dream about him. Soooo dreamy!
He has a quirky personality, and he keeps things light and interesting. I had him for both 1010 and 1100 and have gotten an A- in both which says a lot since I came with no Chemistry background. His tests (except the third one in 1110) are very easy. Attending lectures is not mandatory, but there are pop quizzes and he explains things well.
Only time I saw him was the last day of class for evaluations. Labs were fairly easy, finished most of them early. The grad student that was the TA for my section was helpful. No final lab test, and we finished with the labs 3 weeks before classes ended. 1 for helpfulness and clarity because he was never actually there but the course was easy.
Great professor. Likes to tell jokes. Very very helpful. His lectures correspond with his tests and he is very good at explaining concepts. The class was easy because of how well he teaches.
If you are looking for an easy Chemistry class, Professor Harris is the professor to get. However, the whole class is based on quizzes and tests. Not one assignment due in his class. Also, if you don't mind studying on your own time, class is not necessary to go to. All of his lecture slides are online.
Dr. Harris is the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had (getting a Minor in Chem.) He is funny, well he thinks he is. The class is great comical relief! I'd recommend this professor
Gives 1% extra credit. No homework. 3 tests and final. He is really funny and thinks he is too! He really wants you to understand. Tests are often similar to the practice tests he gives. Dont get the textbook. Its expensive and I have a 98% just from attending class every day. His lecture slides are from the textbook company anyway.
Professor Harris is a good instructor, but his lectures dragged on for me. He has a really quirky personality and can get off on a lot of tangents. If you have the motivation to read the textbook and work out problems, going to class isn't necessary. Every test is easy except the third one. Professor Harris is willing to help, you just have to ask.
No homework in this class. Your whole grade is from tests. Make sure you do NOT miss these, for whatever reason! He will not work with you in making these up, and won't even let you take tests beforehand, even if it's your brother's wedding or you have to be out of town. He gives out pretests, and if you do well on those, you'll do well on the test
The problem with this class is the grading scheme. There are 3 exams and a final and those are the only grades. There is a ton of material and he basically outlines the textbook in lectures. He is pretty funny, but that isn't going to help your grade. You need to read to pass and if you aren't a good test taker don't take this class.
No homework, grade is based off 3 tests and a final. One extra credit assignment. Study guide is basically the test but don't skip class. FUNNY guy.
Dr. Harris really cares about his students. He is always cracking jokes. If you want to pass you will have to put in a lot of effort with no grade boost in the process. The only grades are tests.
Dr. Harris works hard to make sure his students are understanding the material. He opens up the first 15-20 minutes of lecture to anonymous questions that he then answers for the whole class. He only grades off of 4 tests and gives no other assignments to boost your grade, but as long as you pay attention in class you should do fine.
Chem 1110 was a great class, I learned a ton! But, you will not pass if you do not do the reading and the practice problems. the class only has 3 tests and the final and those are the only things graded. STUDY FOR EVERY TEST. Professor Harris was a great teacher, funny, and always excited about chemistry. I would recommend his class to anyone.
He is so funny, very understanding, and gives great lectures. Always answers ever question you have. Only three exams and a final, no other homework at all. Its a great class and he is great.
Your grade for the class is based on four test. Each test is worth 100 points except for the final which is worth 200 points. It is lecture heavy and everything on the test is discussed in lecture. However, in order to stay on track Dr. Harris goes through slides fast and does not post them on canvas.
He doesn't use a canvas page so you don't really know what your grade is. The only things that go toward your grade are the exams and a 1% extra credit opportunity. Harris is a great guy, and really nice, but I had a hard time in the class.
Dr. Harris teaches a pretty standard intro chem class. It's not particularly difficult or particularly entertaining. He tries to spice it up by making a dad joke every now and then and does some nifty demonstrations for the class. I hate huge classes, so I wasn't a big fan of the setting and course, but I have no unique beef with Dr. Harris himself
Take the professors advice and work out as many in textbook questions s you possibly can and there wont be anything on the test (4) you can't do. Make sure to bring any questions to class, he will explain them until you understand. Seriously, a great teacher.
The shortest way to sum up Dr. Harris is "dad jokes." Lots and lots of dad jokes. It made it difficult for me to follow what he was saying about the material, so I stopped going to class. I just worked through all of the end of chapter problems in the textbook, showed up for exams, and got Bs.
Professor Harris is excellent at breaking down the complexity of chemistry and making learning fun.
Dr. Harris is an amazing chemistry professor! Your grade is based only on the exams, but he is clear about what he expects you to know for each exam. His exams are based off of practice exams that he hands out during class. Attending lectures and reading the book are a must. Would take a class from him again!
Dr. Harris really loves what he teaches. He wants to spread that to his students and tries to make an unenjoyable subject less brutal. Harris gives good prep for exams however the course is only based on the 4 test grades for the final grade. If you don't test well, you need to study hard and be well prepared because that's the whole grade.
I really liked Dr. Harris. He is super funny and witty. His class is just hard because you only have 4 tests and that's your whole grade. Every problem is worth 4 points so if you miss three you're already at a B+ Just read the book and do the in text problems and you'll be good
Dr. Harris is THE BEST. He is so funny and I loved his class. He tells lots of silly jokes to help you remember things. I would never take cham from anyone else. If you have the option definitely take chem from him.
Dr. Harris makes many dad jokes throughout lecture to try and be funny but overal was kind of annoying. The class is strictly exam grades so be sure to study, he gives you a practice exam of basically exactly what is going to be on the exams which is nice. He answers questions at the beginning of class which is super helpful.
Do not buy the book for this class! I never used it and it wasn't an issue at all. Professor Harris's class was really fun toward the beginning of the semester, but it got a little harder to stay motivated by the end. He tries to make entry level chemistry as interesting as he can and is a really nice guy. Overall a good prof for a general course.
Dr. Harris is the King of bad dad jokes. He is really passionate about what he does and answers questions quickly and completely. Not really available outside of class, but his TA has SI sessions once a week at night. The only downside is the material is a lot harder than I anticipated, I had to work hard for the grade, which is entirely test based
Very nice and funny. Lots of cheesy chem jokes. The only grades for the class are the 4 exams (study hard!). One easy extra credit opportunity. Attendance not required but recommended. Posts slides online but not lectures. *Do the practice problems in the book to study for exams.*
Professor Harris is one of the best parts of the University. Chemistry will never be an easy course, but he makes it worth the time. Be aware however, not assignments or attendance points, this class is graded entirely on tests. His jokes will keep you entertained, he will work with you, and his class is full of fun and experiments. Great guy.
Honestly, the sweetest human being on the planet and SO positive. Whenever anyone asks a question, no matter what it is, he always makes sure to answer and never makes anyone feel dumb. His class is hard to get an A in simply because the grading is just exams, no assignments or quizzes to cushion your grade. I liked it like that though. Loved him.
Douglas Harris gets off on tangents and is very distracted. His tests are the only thing you get graded on, and they are strictly lecture based. Although he does not take attendance, if you miss a day, you're screwed and confused.
He bases your grade off of solely 4 exams, which is frustrating when don't do well on a certain exam it's super difficult to bring your grade up. No assignments, quizzes, or participation. Makes it too difficult for a general class.
Doctor Harris is an awesome professor who cares about all of his students. His lectures are straight to the point with funny jokes here and there. If you want to get a good grade then you will. If you show up to the lectures, do the readings, and study for the tests (make sure you know the concepts!!) then his class will be just really easy! 10/10
Dr. Harris barely teaches and doesn't make it understandable. The only way I made it through is because of previous chem experience. You might as well not show up for any of the classes and just read the textbook on your own. The Grade is based entirely off four Exams with one extra credit assignment worth I point. this class is not worth it.
Dr. Harris did not care about me, my schedule or any of his students. His lectures were 90% uncomfortable, unfunny jokes and 10% material. I'll give him points for a straightforward grading system, all points were up to 4 exams and that's it. If you can help it, don't take chemistry from Dr. Harris.
Professor Harris is an okay teacher. He gets distracted with a lot of dad jokes and goes off on tangents. The grade is solely composed of 4 exams and 1 POINT of extra credit. I didn't need the book. Take the practice exams since many of the questions will be on the tests. The final exam was just questions from previous tests and practice exams.
Skipping this class will not hurt you at all. His lecture slides are all on Canvas and if you read the book you get the same information. Going to class does give you an opportunity to ask questions and see the few experiments he does. Recommend taking with friends. Plan on going to every SI or self teaching through the textbook.
If you go to lecture the tests will be easy. He answers all of your questions during lecture and is very helpful. Make sure you take the practice tests, some of the questions show up on tests. Dr Harrison is very helpful, and wants you to succeed. Chemistry is hard but he makes it as fun as possible. Study from the textbook and you'll pass the test
He's a really sweet guy who makes chemistry interesting. It's a bit hard keeping up with the videos and reading but it's really like that in all classes. He's really interested in what he's talking about so he makes you interested. And he's always wanting questions!
Pretty much remedial high school chem. Not too hard but self motivation is key. There's the set of pre-recorded lectures and then the TAs have SIs according to when the class said they could. If you watch the lectures and take some notes, then do the practice questions in the textbook, an A is pretty much guaranteed.
Canvas page for online learning is horribly designed. Deadlines are not clear. If you fail your final, you fail the class.
Four exams. Three chapters per exam, except that the fourth exam is comprehensive. Online lectures were consistently interesting and informative of what you needed to know for the exams. Also, the chemistry jokes are pretty good. (Oh and I think it's possible to survive this class just through lectures and no textbook)
Don't take the online version unless you are ready to stick to a schedule of at least an hour or two of study a day for a good grade. All necessary content is presented in lecture and Professor Harris has a passion for chemistry and teaches well, but practicing problems and review of material is essential to learn the content.
Best chemistry professor. He makes the subject fun.
I really disliked the teacher. I felt that he spend more time trying to appeal to the students with his humor than explained the material. I felt really lost in his lectures and I didn't get any help online when I went to the TA's meetings or reading the textbook. Maybe it would a good class in the classroom but, not online.
Not a fan of his style. I wish I had read the textbook instead of watched the lectures. That screwed me over.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE FROM THIS PROFESSOR. My biggest regret of college so far.
The semester I had him was weird. He posted lectures on canvas (videos) and class time was spent answering questions. The lecture videos are hard to keep up on and class time is boring. The only thing that was graded was 4 exams and the final. THAT'S IT! No homework or anything. Just exams and the final on your grade book. You can't fail one exam!
Summary of lectures: *Bad chemistry joke Did you like that one? You didnt like that one? Lets try another one. Worst class I have ever taken. I was optimistic based on other reviews but this class was awful. The material covered was not the material on the test. And your grade is solely based on 3 tests and a final. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
The lecture videos are awful. He will happily answer any questions you have but he's really not good at explaining things. The class is only 4 exams so if you fail one exam good luck passing.
He is very passionate about chemistry but is HORRIBLE at teaching. Get ready to teach yourself almost everything because his classes only consist of bad dad jokes and dumb stories that have nothing to do with chem. The only grades in the class were the exams so you can't even fail one test or you'll get a bad grade. Don't bother going to class.
He was such a happy guy who, you can tell, loves to teach. But he isn't the best at understanding the questions asked and his teaching is not easy to understand. I pretty much had to teach myself.
I don't think I've ever had a class as bad as this. Teacher is nice, but cannot teach. He makes it very hard to understand the material and grades you only on exams. Prepare to teach yourself everything, read the text book, and study every single day. I stopped attending the lectures because it was a waste of time. Would not recommend!
I don't think the material is hard. would read over material for the first time right before tests & still got a B. Dr. Harris is really nice and eager to help during office hours. THAT BEING SAID: I did not like this class. I stopped going to lectures quickly because they were useless & the jokes were painful. you only get graded on tests. pain.
IDK why Dr. Harris has such low ratings here (maybe they are bc of his past TA's?) He is one of the greatest lab professors I've ever had at USU. He is funny (be prepared for dad jokes) and really cares about the progress of his students. If you ask him questions, he is more than willing to help. I really enjoyed it whenever he popped into my labs.
One of my least favorite teachers. His lectures are confusing, full of dumb jokes and doesn't always answer your questions. The tests are very similar to the practice exams but his lectures are beyond painful to go to and so confusing.
He's nice but he's a terrible teacher. For an intro class his lectures are hard to understand. When students ask questions he responds without answering the question at all. It's so weird and super frustrating. Too many terrible jokes. Overall, the material isn't too tricky, but you will have to teach yourself with the online textbook he provides.
I did not get the best grade in this class and honestly that's on me. Professor Harris is probably the best professor when it comes to simplistic teaching. His lectures are a little hard to follow sometimes because he is a goofy guy with lots of jokes but that makes him more personable. He is more than willing to work with the students.
Your grade is based solely on 4 exams. However, he covers all of the test material in class and it's all pretty easy.
Dr.Harris is great! Well he's great at telling dad jokes, 100s & 1000s of dad jokes, if it was a test about dad jokes I would of done great, sadly it is a chemistry class, he won't teach you, he will read off slides & won't answer ?s well. Has no homework, but 4 exams, attendance is optional, nice dude just needs a reality check of his actual job.
3 exams and one final. No homework or assignments. Professor Harris is super passionate about the topic but his lectures are hard to understand because they are filled with dumb dad jokes and random tangents that have nothing to do with chem. Would not recommend. Also, only 1 point of extra credit opportunity which is very easy.
Probably my favorite teacher so far. He is very knowledgeable and was always willing to help outside of the class. He is super funny and explains things in a way that is easy to grasp. There are 4 tests that make up all of your grade, but by studying you will do great! I highly recommend taking his class, he is very passionate and brilliant :)
Do not take this class if you don't like to read! He only reviews what is in the textbooks, he doesn't actually teach. Don't get me wrong he's a great guy but it seems like this class isn't his top priority. He gives out no homework, so your grade is dependent on like 4 tests. The class average was a C. Everyone struggled a little bit.
-No work -No lecture -No sense -No hope -4 exams
Nice guy. Bad teacher. No work. 4 exams. Good luck
Like everyone else says lots and lots of dad jokes like a crazy amount. He seems like a nice person but it was hard to learn what he was teaching. Ended up having to re teach everything to my self before exams and that seemed to help. Overall 6/10 good guy just not a great teacher imo.
This class isn't that bad, but the only thing you're graded on is exams so study up. His jokes aren't as bad as people say, he's just trying to make chemistry fun. My only real problem was that sometimes his answers to questions are so cryptic and vague it makes everyone more confused.
This is the best chemistry lab -- there's no busy work, the professor is present and helpful, and the expectations and procedures each week are clear and easy to follow. I really liked Dr. Harris!
Harris was a nice professor and was always willing to answer any questions or emails sent very fast. Only 4 tests are your grade plus 1 easy extra credit. Sometimes answers questions in a roundabout way, and often I had to rely on the textbook. Overall good teacher, bad class. If you study hard enough you can get an A
This lab was simple and straightforward, with no pre-lab assignments and a post-lab that can be submitted at the end of lab. Dr. Harris was very involved in teaching the labs and was excited to be there. I really enjoyed taking this lab.
Professor Harris is fun and caring. He makes a lot of jokes and tries to make everyone feel involved and welcome. Your grade is solely based on exams, so keep that in mind. He does give some extra credit. Overall, he is a great guy. The class is hard unless you love chemistry, then it's probably chill.
By far the best chemistry lab I've ever taken. Substantially less difficult than most, and I learned substantially more. He genuinely enjoys the subject and you can tell, and he makes lab actually fun.
Dr. Harris is a great guy. He likes to make a lot of jokes during class, which leads him to get on and off topic which is really hard for me personally. I had to take his class from 6 pm - 7:45 pm so focusing was very difficult. The only things that go on your grade are 4 exams, 4 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.
Great guy, mid professor. Goes off topic often which makes it hard to focus on coursework. Doesn't really answer questions or answers them vaguely. Only answers things one way. Makes lots of dad jokes. Grade is only 4 exams & 4 homework sets. Very entertaining. Does lots of experiments in class. Highly suggest the chem tutors.
Agree with a lot of other comments, he is a great guy and teacher, he is lecture-heavy and only grades 4 homework sets, and 4 exams, which are due the same day, which makes the class not very overwhelming, but you have to do really good on every assignment/exam. Not a hard teacher, it's just a hard course overall, no matter who you take it from.
It's hard to grasp the material when he keeps getting distracted and doesn't explain the material well enough. I asked a lot of questions trying to understand the material and he was no help for me. I had to get a lot of help from the tutors. He only has 4 exams and 4 homework assignments that go on your grade. I don't recommend him at all.
Tests are majority of the grade which makes it more difficult to get an A. Dr. Harris' teaching methods weren't my favorite either. He is super funny and entertaining though.
Dr. Harris is one of the most passionate and lovable people you will ever meet. His love for his job is honestly inspiring. He's the sweetest and makes his class very doable. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Harris teaches though lectures and answers questions at the beginning of class and during class. He uses our class time well and even has funny dad jokes. Students can learn the content at home or in person by reading slides, attending lectures, and reviewing recorded lectures. It's best to take notes.
Professor Harris is clearly passionate about chemistry, and enjoys lecturing his students. I'd recommend this class even if you just wanted to hear his dad jokes! The only downside to this class is that your grade mostly comes from 4 tests, all of which are taken in class on scantron paper. Other than that, I'd take this course again
