bad professor. doesn't teach very well.
If you study and know his textbook inside out, you will get an A. The things he talk about are pretty interesting. However, he is a bit arrogant and insensitive. Take him only if you are willing to study!
i dont agree with the rest of the ratings on here. you DO have to read the book -- but it's like 50 pages, his lectures are pretty interesting and he gives tests of 25 questions each. if you get a 70%, that's an A-. the paper is easy.. 90% pass 1st tim
BORING... semi easy test, read the book! go to class!
just read the book
boring, hard, detailed tests. but if you memorize his book-it'll be ok
I think Douglas is a very smart teacher. I took him three times. He’s an easy grader and the coffee and teacart does help me stay awake at times. The topics he teaches are interesting unlike the other reviews, it’s just that he lectures and doesn’t make i
really good, he goes over the book in class, the tests are a little tricky but if you go over the test after your done a 2nd time you will do pretty good hes really nice too
Great professot. Generates a lot of enthusiasm for his subject. Funny, interesting. Tests are somewhat hard though. Read his book and take good notes.
Very smart teacher. Poses interesting questions for discussion. Even though the class itself is rather challenging, he constantly makes jokes and seems very like a very nice guy.
Hes a smart man. Very nice. He brings coffee and tea in the morning. Hes clear. All you have to do is go to class and pay attention and read his book. He is very fair and straight forward . If you have a choice take him
3 tests only, reading H.W. not that much tho. He is easy. Philosophy is boring no matter what and he is very easy
very interesting class if you are in to philosophy exams are not difficult if you don't understand the material you won't do good. but he gives a curve on his exams
take him
this is my 2nd time with prof.Lackey and he is very interesting. Philo is an interesting topic and prof. Lackey explains things well. His tests are very tricky tho but he prepares us as well as he can. I like him and i would recommend.
unbelievably boring, but easy; he curves, so like an 85 average is an A; u only need to take notes for the 1st test, after that it all comes from his book, u can do hw for other classes instead.
prof lackey is lacking. very boring and i found not helpful. i feel like he just makes stuff up out of his a**. dont take him. take Perricone.
uhhh this guy is nice, brings coffee etc etc but his exams are pretty tough, 150 multiple choice questions?! gimmie a break, i think if u like to study hard this class is for u, but if ur lookin for ur typical BS philo class, this one is not for u =)
He is the ONLY prof for the capstone course, so if you minor in Phi, you have to take him. Hes pretty boring (monotone voice, boring issues) but overall it was ok. 1 Midterm and 1 Paper, easy class to sleep through or walk out in the middle to go to the bathroom. Attendance is taken, and coffee is served. Trust me you'll need the caffeine.
very interesting class. His tests are crazy detailed, but if you study enough then you'll get a good grade. You just need to do better than other people in the class to get a good grade, thats how he gives grades. He brings in coffee every morning and is a nice guy. Recommended.
Horrible prof. doesnt go over exams and test harder than reading. I wouldnt recommend at all. took notes and studied and got a D+
He is a great prof. Easy if yoy take notes and do your reading. He is funny and brings coffee for everyone.
Worst prof. i ever had in my life. this guy is isnt helpful. he just keeps talking and doesnt explain the exams or questions. dont be fooled by high ratings this guy will give you a bad grade, who needs coffee and a D. He dont listen when you ask. He just goes on with his BS! worst ever! i hate him.
That was my first philosophy class and professor Lackey made it really interesting. I like listening to him even though the class was early in the morning. I didn't have to be active.Take his class during summer so you can avoid paper assignement.Take him!!!He will make you think about stuff that you didn't ask yourself before!
he is a cute little man and rbings us tea and coffee every morning and he is relatively easy if you study for his exams. he has good inentions and wants you to pass the class so just do the work
he's a tard. doesnt know what he's saying and you will get a bad grade. its true he isnt helpful at all you need to study a lot to "compete" and still get a 70. retarded class and subject.
good professor, easy if you take notes and pay attention, don't know what other comments are talking about
He is unbelievably boring, it is almost impossible to stay a wake to take notes. Worst of all, he assigns a phi book that he wrote himself. It confusing, just like his exams, and filled with sentence fragments and bad grammar. But the Tea he brings to class is good.
If you are truely interested in phil. you will enjoy this course very much. Prof. Lackey teaches you everything you need to know about ancient greek philosophers and you will be suprised how much you actually learned in the end. The course is lecture style and there are 3 exams, not cummulative. Attendance is taken but he brings coffee!
He's nice. Test are ok. He brings coffee and tea to class. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Hes great. I took him twice and Im about to take him a third time.
Honorable guy. Great professor(he's also the chairman), he knows what hes talking about and he is not biased in his teaching, he tells it as it is. Take him if you want to learn intresting things. Just a reminder, every philosophy professor in Baruch loves what they do and in my opinion will do their best to teach you. COFFEE AND TEA!
He is a very interesting nice guy. I loved listening to his lectures because he makes it exciting and is very into what he teaches. Take a lot of notes and read the book to help you on the exam. His tests are alittle hard because they go into a lot of detail and they are very very long but you learn alot though.
nice guy -- a little weird though like all philosophy professors. Midterm really long + 10 page final paper.
TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!JUST READ THE ASSINGMENTS BEFORE THE EXAMS.U HAVE TO BE A****TO NOT PASS OR GET AT LEAST B
Take him! If you read the assigments before class, and if you take good notes, you should not have a problem. His tests are hard, but he curves. There is one paper (pass or fail) which you can rewrite until you pass it.He is funny, and allows open discussions in class.I took him at 8 AM in the summer, and I can say that I enjoyed the classs.
It's intense but interesting. His tests are indeed very tedious and difficult. If you read his book from beginning to end and pretty much memorize it, then you'll do good on the tests. Take good notes too. Has a nice sense of humor and makes lots of jokes.
This guy sounds like a freagin robot that just fell in a pile of sesame. This bean's tests are difficult and if you take notes for the whole period you will still get a C+ wate of time and effort. I dont agree with him in class and i do not like him. I got a C+ and i studied the most for this class. smashed my GPA hard.
If you are a serious student don't take him, he will kill your G.P.A. He thinks whatever only he says is right. I made a mistake looking at his previous rating, Pls make sure you don't do it. Take his class only if you like free coffee not grades.
He is a wonderful knowledgeable professor. Clearly the previous commentors did not do the reading as well as others did. Yes his tests are incredibly hard but that is why there is a curve. The top 8 students get an A, the next 8 an A-. He gives very few Ds and Fs, about 2 or 3 each, so a student getting a C+ must have done very badly.
Just Run! Don't even think to register , run, run for your grades...............
Honest opinion: I didn't even find Medieval Phi in the course list. And the person who posted in 7/31/06 (A-) explained just like professor (very very fishy)! But to be very honest it's better for your G.P.A not to take him.
i love this man! forget those comments before me...he's so good..made teh class really interesting, very clear on the subjects, curves the tests and brings coffee for his students...also he's so funny...but be prepared to study till 2 am in the morning for his tests..cuz its pretty hard...but it was worth it in the end cuz i got so much from it!
Good professor, great class, hard tests, easy grader and no paper to write
Amazing prof. Funny, extremely interesting, knows what he's talking about. Fascinating & beautiful mind. Many ppl are majoring/minoring in PHI cuz of him. Test r straight to the point + he curves. I got A’s in both of his classes & looking forward to take more! Take him, u'll have a great time! Coffe & tea every morning. Helpful outside of class.
How unethical it is for an Ethics professor to rate himself!
great guy. coffee every morning. may come off like a dick if u argue against him, but always an understanding guy, and if u have a problem he'll help. would definately recommend him as much as i do zelcer
Actually, there is a Medieval philosophy and I believe it's called christianity/judism/Islam so who ever wrote that is just being a $^*%. The class was intresting and he is a good professor. Yes he is helpful and no do not argue with him unless you know what you're getting into. Coffie & Tea!!!!
Great guy. Funny, free coffee and tea. If you don't understand anything, simply ask him. I'm so happy that he's not a Religious Fanatic. Excellent prof. Take him, you'll learn something.
Excellent professor. Pay attention to the details and don't argue too often. He likes to lecture and will often talk over you, if you take offense to that don't start arguments.
I am taking him right now, so far I agree with the negative comments. He wrote a textbook very confusing, we have a test tomorrow and I have no idea whats gonna be there. He haven't prepare us to the exam.
I am taking him right now, so far I agree with the negative comments. He wrote a textbook very confusing, we have a test tomorrow and I have no idea what's gonna be there. He haven't prepare us for exam.
Professor Lackey is highly intelligent and funny. The only thing that anyone can fault him on, really, is that he seems somewhat jaded about the topic (except when he gets to Socrates). There is a lot of reading, so if you're lazy and get a bad grade, blame yourself.
Smart man, but teaching doesn't appear to be his calling. Honestly, I think that he teaches to placate his ego. Choose your questions carefully because he can be subtly condescending when he responds. If you can avoid him. Our textbook was simply a series of essays that he wrote which were full of typos and ambiguity. This class is torture.
This is the second time I am taking him. I like him and I can definitely say that I learned a lot in his class compared to other philosophy classes that I took. The problem with Baruch students is that they are lazy and all they look for is minimum work and a good grade. This prof. will show you what philosophy is about.
I took logic with this professor. He is very arguementative. Try to prove him wrong and he will just rebuttle what ever you say (sometimes contradicting himself.) There is no textbook, no defined syllabus, and no structure to the class. Your grade is based on how well you do compared to everyone else. I got an A. But I wouldnt take him again.
Are you people kidding? His grades are curved. For each of you who complained of a low grade, somebody is laughing at you because they did the work and received a high grade. His class is simple if you actually like philosophy, and he'll talk endlessly with you after class is over if you wish. I took him last term and signed up again for next term.
Had dis prof 25 yeers ago, no problem. Goog teech. If ya ainted unda stands him, ya shoodent be in Baruch. jesus
Professor Lackey is the nicest professor you will ever meet. Our class started early in the morning and he always brought coffee and tea for everyone in the class.
It is a great challenge for me to stay awake in any class, except this one! so interesting! so awesome! I wish I could take it over and over again and I wish I had Prof.Lackey for all my phi classes. The best class i?ve ever had!
Wonderful class! Professor Lackey is one of the nicest professors at Baruch :) Interesting topics. The book was extremely useful.
EASY capstone class. Lackey is such a NICE prof. Early class and there was always tea and coffee =D such a loveable man. Very laid back discussions, I got a B because I messed up on the midterm but that was my own fault. Final was a 10 pg paper but i only wrote 7 and i got an A lol. TAKE HIM!
Take this professor! He's really cool and only assigns reading assignments. 3 tests, including the final and one 500 word writing assignment. Grade is based on class rank, if you read and write down notes in class, easy A, which is what i got.
Highly knowledgeable professor. Read the book and take notes. Work hard for your grades. Recommended if you are willing to study deeply.
I rated this pro with an A-. But I god dam hate the class. 15 page at the end of the class WTF? Here is the deal he knows his stuff, clear nice, but he will make you work. If you HATE writing get the hell away. On the other hand if you like talking about stuff that if you would have mentioned outside the class you would be called insane be my quest
Took him for Ancient Greek Philosophy, Christian, Jewish and Islamic Philosophy of the Middle Ages, and my Senior Seminar. Sharp mind, and patient with students. Head of the Department for good reason. Tests challenge your recollection more than recall. He expects you to know well the thinkers he covers. A must for serious Philosophy students.
A sweet professor with the best intentions but I found it difficult to follow along as he likes to go on in circles and dance around your question without actually answering it. Daily quizzes will hurt you whether you read or not- I found it very discouraging.
Anyone who walks into this course thinking that medieval philosophy is 'easy,' or that a minimal effort is enough to get by, will definitely suffer. Material is dense, but Prof. Lackey does a great job of covering the proposed topics and tries to condense complex ideas to make them easier to digest. DO THE READINGS, take notes, and you'll be fine.
Excellent. As chair of the philosophy department, Prof Lackey is outstanding. He teaches eloquently and with energy, and keeps the class engaging. He's a funny guy with a good sense of humor and is very knowledgable (in general). There are daily quizzes ( = free points). Class is structured very well. I highly recommend him to anyone!! Great prof!
HE IS THE MAN. PERIOD. If you love philosophy, take him. If you don't, take him anyway. You'll be smarter for it.
He doesn't value participation at all, he will try to make you look like an ignorant. But other than that, he is amazing. You will learn a lot. You have to read a lot, so you can pass the daily quizes, and exams aren't that difficult; however, the final: even though he says isn't cumulative IT IS, be prepared to answer 100 questions.
You will learn a lot from him, he has a pedagogical method to make you love philosophy. There are daily quizzes, so make sure to read, and be prepared for the final, which it's cumulative and with a lot of questions. I assure you you will be talking about the presocratics, plato and aristotle throughout the semester. Make sure to ask questions.
You have to read tons of papers and make sure to understand whatever he says in class
A knowledgeable professor but talks way too much. He does not stay focus and likes to go off on tangents. It's hard to ask questions when he's talking because he will not pick on you until he finishes his 10 minute tangents, and by that time you've already forgotten what you wanted to say. Cool guy, but a pretty mediocre teacher.
Best philosophy professor ever. He is very knowledgeable and explains everything in a way you stay focus. His lectures are really interesting if you, of course, are interested in the class. For medieval philosophy, he showed us videos, songs, pics, and explain the historical context of the philosopher so we could understand the philosophy itself
He wasn't sure about grading, even syllabus didn't specify anything about it. He took a midterm and asked for a 15 page paper. but the grade that i got, wasn't expecting at all. Good luck taking him.
Prof. Lackey is a mixed bag for me as someone who loves philosophy. I think this particular course was unorthodox so he accommodated as best as he could. Some lectures are dry but interesting. Overall, the man has a world of experience and a lot to offer curious, young minds. He is a worldly man and usually has an answer for everything.
He is the man. He knows everything and his experience could teach a lot. The life and art class was quite interesting, since he gave us the opportunity to go to museums, concerts and stuff. For this class he asked to write down 10 papers/1 page each one, but they aren't that difficult.
Guy only likes it if you share his opinion. Super condescending to anyone who disagrees with him. Just likes to show off his own knowledge. Steer clear of this self-centered, egotistical maniac
He's smart with a good sense of humor and tells you everything you need to know for the tests. It's annoying that you need to do all the readings because he takes attendance with a daily quiz. (If you're late, you miss that quiz). He goes off on tangents like people said, but it doesn't prevent him from teaching what you need for the tests.
Guy gives coffee in the beginning of class, two classes so far and i fell asleep in lecture , so hes off to a good start
Loves himself, in fact you'll learn he went to Princeton on more than one occasion. Condescending, talks about irrelevant things that are of no concern to the class topic. Tests you on things that are absolutely not relevant in a philosophy class. Preached pragmatism but obliviously doesn't apply it to his own life. Avoid, better options exist.
If you have to take his class, make sure it's offered in the morning because the best part of his lecture will be the free watery coffee. Went to way too many lectures before I got the hint that going to class did not mean I was gonna do well on his tests. He rambles about irrelevant topics that wont show up on the test. Do not recommend at all.
hes one of the most genuine people i've ever met so i feel bad saying anything bad but philosophy is definetely hard for business majors to grasp so i basically thought this class was impossible but hes so passionate and willing to work with anyone
Hell give a quiz on the readings every class. Readings arent long. I love him hes such a sweet man and hes very smart. Pay attention to how philosophers ideologies compare to one another. Two tests.
If you like philosophy you'll like the class, if not try other means of learning... kinda boring tho. He's a super fair grader though. 3 tests a year. Funny dude most times, not strict just don't be disrespectful and talk in class. One paper due but actually helps you learn more. Doesn' take attendance but most things said in class are on the tests
Professor lackey is passionate about this subject and that made his lectures very enjoyable. He does a great job of presenting philosophers and their ideas without bias, and often tells funny stories. Some of the readings are long but they're worth doing for the quizzes. A must-take for any philosophy major/minor.
Pay attention in class and you will easily pass the three exams for the class. High and low curve are set by the students, on both exams and final grade so perform just like everyone else for b's and c's, focus and try for an A. Don't stress the low curve, some pothead or rich kid future dropout will likely decide not to withdraw and keep it low.
Very interesting fellow; i would recommend you take his course, because of how passionate he is in his field of study. He makes fun jokes which adds life to the class and his lectures are always interesting to hear if you are into philosophy yourself. 100% would recommend. Professor if you read this im the kid with the adidas hat in the back.
His lecture might seem boring to some people, but it just the problem of the topics not prof Lackey. He is very nice and happy to answer your questions and has tried to explain the materials clearly. By the way, he made copies of his books as materials which were amazing if you really read them! No homework, TAKE HIM!!
Just finished my final today. He is earnest, knowledgeable, expressive, and GREAT!!! I took it at nine in the morning and have never been absent from any of his lectures, the way he talked is straightforward and pretty interesting as long as you pay attention. One of my biggest takeaways is: the unexamined life is not worth living. THANK YOU Prof!!
This teacher is very nice and passionate about what he teaches but if you dont understand what he teaches or his reading which is a dumbed down version of his teaching his exams will be challenging. He does curve your final grade. He is helpful and easy to find out side of class. Your grade comes from 3 exams. and a paper which is graded on p or F
He is great!!!!!! Love his class!!!!!
He would not let me make up for a quiz when I proved that I had a train delay. His assignments seem clear untill you get the grade which he bases off of criteria he does not share until after graded. For example, you might do everything he asks, with perfect grammar and get a 50 on a PARAGRAPH. He is short with students if they do not agree.
Professor Lackey is the worst, all he does is talk. Every class is long lectures and there is no work that goes with it. You're not aware of what your grade can be because there are no assignments. There is only a midterm and a test but it's difficult to go back and remember and recall the past info. Trust me, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I hated it.
Professor Lackey is such a gem. His lectures are amazing as he is well-spoken and has a nice voice. Mans is super knowledgeable, especially in science. He loves when you ask questions throughout the lecture. 2 exams, a final, and one paper graded on a pass or fail basis. No homework and his curve on the final grade is super high. TAKE HIM!!!!
Lackey is a caring professor who is passionate about philosophy. Take good notes and you will do well on the exams. He likes it when students have questions and is always happy to chat with you after class if you have any questions or concerns. Really good at teaching. Uses a well-writtten book he wrote himself in the later part of the course.
Professor Lackey gives really good lectures and is very passionate about the course. However, he only graded the class on two tests - the midterm and final, with no extra credit or any way of making up for a poor exam result. Definitely take the class if you're a good test taker.
2 exams (25 Q each) and a final (50 Q) all MC. questions are tricky so be careful. Graded by these exams only and questions based SOLELY on lectures so show up! 100 questions 100%. Your grade how many questions you get right on the exams. get every q right, you get 100%. final grades are curved so 70 is an A and 35 is a D so pretty solid.
honestly I dreaded going to this class, this man has no power point and does not make the class interactive. He comes to class, sits on his chair, and chats the whole time every class. Very boring. Only 3 tests and a pass/fail paper.
Mr. Lackey is a great professor who genuinely cares about what he teaches. Your final grade is based on a few tests and nothing more but if you are interested in the topic (and Mr. Lackey's lectures) the tests should be a breeze. He also gives out free coffee which is worth much more than you would think. Awesome professor highly recommend.
Great Professor, but difficult class. Professor provides students with textbooks and PowerPoints, however, he doesn't use them during lectures. For his exams, I highly recommend you to study a couple days before and use every resource you have. The textbooks and PowerPoints are great resources to use.
Lackey is a gem. His lectures are clear cut and very concise. Keep up with the readings to be ahead of the lectures. He breaks it down and also gives analogies and concepts of the topics to make it memorable and understandable. Attend every lecture as some of the info he provides is not in the powerpoints. 3 tests and a term paper (pass/fail).
Prof Lackey rocks. Take him if you're invested in philosophy and want a good grade, but STUDY for the tests.
The class was definitely lecture heavy and he tends to get sidetracked when you ask him a question but overall his lectures were interesting & organized. Attending his lectures helps you with the exams since the powerpoints isn't enough to prepare you and it can get kinda hard. A midterm & a final with an essay/short answer portion for each.
idk why this professor has good ratings, he is not good but i guess he is better than the other horrible phi teachers. if this is the best you can find than good luck
This professor's class is fantastic, and I learned a lot. If you're seeking a philosophy professor, I'd without a doubt suggest this one. His lectures were very interesting. He is pretty chill.
Kind and sweet professor, but test and lecture heavy. Test is very specific and he has his own questions. Class based on 4 tests worth of 25 questions each all multiple choice. One paper to write but worth no grade. Just pass or fail.
Professor Lackey is great. His lectures are very engaging & makes time to hear from the class' POV. He always brings in tea & coffee for his students which is so sweet and made us look forward to class. He's super understanding & is flexible to meet outside of class for missed exams, etc. I definitely recommend & would take a class by him again.
Professor Lackey is on the older side and his lectures are a bit of a drag, but he made PHI 1500 easy and thought provoking, just how an introductory/required course should be. I get the impression that he was once a far better professor than he currently is because of his age, but I don't hold this against him which is why I've still given him a 5
If you enjoy paying thousands for a class and traveling however far you come just to get an education but your professor pushes every one of his own personal opinions on you then this is the class for you. Your opinion in his class doesn't matter. Not a hard class though and no homework other than reading.
Avoid if you can. This intro class was tougher than 3000 level courses!!
Extremely extremely difficult exams. You have to actively listen to every little thing he says if you want to do good. Save yourself a headache and don't take him
Overall an interesting course. Split up into four sections. His tests are more like testing your test taking abilities than on what he lectured on or the assigned reading. He made a lot of inappropiate comments and was very rude. Definitely prefers male students and shows immense bias towards women. Focus and show up and you will do well.
If you simply pay attention (no note taking or outside studying needed) in his class, you will get an A. He talks about philosophical topics, telling you arguments and counterarguments, and then just puts them and examples of them on the test. Interesting and interactive professor.
Prof Lackey is a pretty lenient professor. There's 4 exams and one short paper. He allows you to make up the exams and the paper, and he curves your letter grade. I missed most of his classes, but passed with an A-. Read the course material and you'll score a decent grade. Great professor, has a sense of humor, cares about your grade, for sure.
Only graded on two tests, that are very difficult (he curves so I did pass the class). Classes are just him talking so it's hard to know what to study/ takes notes on. Can be hard to sit through class as it does get boring, he does provide coffee and tea. Good for someone who learns well by listening. Visual learners and note takers will struggle.
His lectures are awesome and interesting. He is very lenient so you will do fine as long as you pay attention.
The professor is pretty lenient, allowing make-ups and curving grades. While attendance is mandatory, simply paying attention in class can earn you an A. unstuck study was a big help for preparing for the exams.
