Makes astro WAY interesting. Some homework, challenging tests, but he gives you study guides that tell you everything to study. You must go to class to do well, but class is *actually* interesting, not a drag. He knows what he's teaching and it shows...makes it very understandable. Highly Recommended.

His Class is very interesting. Homework is not too bad since you can go to his office hours where he practicaly gives you the answers. Exams are not hard if you go to class everyday and actually listen to his interesting lectures. Overall i would say it was an enjoyable class and sparks new interest in Astro.

Douglas Leonard's teaching was superb. Attending his lectures every day should be more than enough to understand the class material. He was very helpful in office hours and tries to help his students succeed.

If you're looking to take a physical science GE, astr101 with leonard is your best bet- there isn't much reading, and despite what others say the math component of it is nothing to worry over. I thought this class was so interesting! I really liked this class. The class is made up of 3 midterms (you drop your lowest score), a final (worth 40% of your grade), and weekly HW assignments. Prof. Leonard is quite the nerd, but he's a great teacher and really enthusiastic about astronomy.

Lecture is not mandatory and does not help. If you do the reading outside the class you'll do fine in the class. There's an online quiz every week,3 midterms and a final. You drop your lowest midterm and quiz grade. This class isn't too bad but the material is somewhat difficult.

Unlike other subjects, there is plenty of AST info available on the web so I only needed the web-key for online hw+tools instead of the whole book. Leonard is the best! Okay, so i fell asleep quite a bit in the class, but he is still sweet and knows what he is talking about. I got an A and didn't have much trouble doing it. Just go over the slides and you should be fine. class=boring, but leonard is a cool guy and not too hard.

This class was actually soooo easy. You dont really have to go to the class because you buy a book with all the slides in it anyways and if you read the textbook you can kind of figure out what they each talk about (although going to class is extremely helpful because sometimes he explains things VERY clearly).

He is an incredible professor who lays the course out for you on the first day by telling you to get the course reader. He has every piece of information you could need unlike other professors. Go to his office hours because it can literally raise your grade from a B+ to an A... I know it certainly did for me.

I have always HATED and SUCKED at sciences my entire life, but Doug made me enjoy & understand everything. Going to class + doing online hw = A,B+ GUARANTEED.

Leonard is a very nice guy. Definitely makes time every week to help students. However, if you really aren't into astronomy that much like I was don't take this class. I skipped a lot of classes during the semester and my grades suffered. 1st midterm 20%, 2nd 30%, and cumulative final 40%. Online quizzes are 10% but you can find answers on quizlet

This guy is awesome. I usually don't like science, and he actually managed to make me interested in astronomy. His lectures are great, and he often does hilarious demos of concepts. Tests are easy if you prepare properly (read, do the quizzes, attend lectures).

You will learn a lot from simply going to class (which I SO recommend), but you will have to study a lot outside of class because the exams were really challenging.

Professor Leonard was hands down the best professor Ive had at state so far. he incorporates the subject of astronomy occasionally with philosophy and I ended up actually wanting to go to class every time. He is hilarious and the most organized teacher i have had. he wants his students to succeed and learn. The course is challenging but rewarding.

Doug is the best. Although his class can be difficult at times if you get behind, it's by far my favorite class. Participation isn't mandatory (which doesnt even matter because I choose to go anyway), he makes astronomy really interesting (as if it isnt already), and he does so much outside of class that you can tell he really enjoys his job. 10/10

Awesome teacher rose my grade from a B to a B+ because I went to every lecture and showed an interest. Go to class and do some studying for the tests and an A is more than possible.

Professor Leonard is easily one of the most passionate, inspirational people I have ever met. I am no a big science person, but I was captivated by every lecture and really enjoyed the class. A lot of people think it's hard, but if you understand the information, you're guaranteed to get an A!

I took this class so that I could be at full-time status and it was the best decision I've made! Really enjoyed his class. The material can get tricky and exams can get tough but he lays out the entire course out for you from the very beginning. He is passionate about his classes and hosts fun events throughout the semester. Best professor!

Hands down the best professor at SDSU. I was considering dropping this class before I went to the first lecture but after sitting through the first class, I was hooked. Professor Leonard has such a love for his work and it'll be hard to find another professor with such commitment and love for teaching. One of the best educational experiences ever.

Leonard was the best professor I have ever had. He makes astronomy so interesting and it makes you want to learn more. He has such an amazing passion for astronomy and is able to explain things really well. He goes somewhat fast during lectures, however, he is available for office hours and will explain things to you until you get them.

Doug is hands-down my favorite professor at San Diego State. He is a very respected professor with a big name in the astronomy community. This class was not only an easy A for me, but I also thoroughly enjoyed learning from him. As for tips for success, I managed to get an A without buying any reading materials by attending every lecture.

This class was amazing! I have never met someone so passionate about the sky. You cover some complex topics, but he does an incredible job explaining things. Attending lectures is a must, make sure to do the readings and attend all "extra activities" he offers! If you show a solid effort throughout the course, he will bump your grade. Love Doug!

Professor Leonard is a super smart guy (corny joke alert). He truly cares about your grade and encourages showing up to office hours. Your grade is 2 midterms, a final, and a weekly online quiz. Lectures can put you to sleep or have your full attention depending on what he's talking about. I recommend taking him; hes a nice guy and it's an easy B.

Professor Leonard was a great professor. He is well respected in the astronomy community. He tries to make lecture more interesting by showing models and telling jokes, but it can get quite boring. Read the book and study the lecture slides and you should do fine even if you skip lecture.

Doug is a great guy. He really loves the subject and his lectures are always interesting. I would recommend getting the textbook and using that to study in addition to the course reader he has you buy. Overall, a great class that I actually looked forward to attending.

Definitely one of my favorite classes. Doug is really passionate about astronomy and makes the class super interesting. Gives an extra 6% curve on exams, and rounds up too. Class isn't hard, just don't skip class all the time and you'll be fine.

Really great lectures

I love Dr. Leonard! The only reason I gave him a 4 instead of 5 is that a few lectures are a complete snoozefest and I have trouble keeping my eyes open, but others are so interesting and complex that I think about them for days after class. He has plenty of corny jokes and understandable demonstrations, and he is overall just a great teacher.

Dr Leonard is a super nice guy that makes astronomy very interesting. He is super easy to talk to approachable. 100% go to his office hours, he will round your ground at the end if you go. Cool class, go to lecture, not going just means you have to read the textbook.

I really enjoyed how he taught this class. It is very clear what you need to know week by week and he is very helpful for preparing for exams in office hours and with the course reader.

Best professor I've had at university. Clearly shows the subject being discussed, and has everything planned by week since the beginning of the semester. Explains everything and only the things you must know for the quizzes and tests. Simplifies astronomy so it is understanding to someone who has never taken it.

He takes his job seriously and actually wants to teach his students. No, he's not an easy professor, but he cares about astronomy and passing his knowledge down to his students. I had to work extremely hard in this class, it was probably my hardest one of the semester. If you just study, do the readings, and work hard, you should do well.

He truly cares about his students and makes it clear with how beautifully his class is designed. Pay attention in class and do the online quizzes and you'll pass!

Animal in the paint for sure, he is more likely a secret agent then an astronomy Dr. but boy does that kid know about the stars. Occasionally he will talk about his son Oliver who is on the forefront of astrophysics push-throughs and soon he will be recruited by SPACEX to be the face of interplanetary colonization. Take while he's still around!

BEST PROFESSOR AT STATE! I took this class to fill a GE requirement and I highly recommend taking this course and taking it with Leonard. His lectures are amazing interesting and everything is easy to grasp because its easy to break down. I did not open my book once and I'm sure if I did it would be really helpful but he really goes over everything

Professor Leonard is actually really great. Lecture material is interesting, and when it gets dull he finds a way to keep everyone paying attention. He is insanely organized and makes it super easy to see exactly what you need to do to get an A. Exams are curved and there is minimal homework.

In all honesty, as an individual who is taking this class as a GE, I feel more mentally inferior than I did in the beginning of the semester. The fact that our grade in this class is determined by 3 tests honestly feels inadequate in determining a student's intellect, especially when everyone just ends up memorizing and regurgitating material.

I thought this class would be a cake walk but the tests are deceivingly difficult. Nonmandatory attendance, no textbook but there is a course reader you should buy, and EASY online quizzes weekly. Teacher is nice and very well educated/respectable but the tests will have questions that will catch you off guard when you thought you were prepared.

One of the most caring professors I've had. He wants his students to pass and understand the material. The tests are somewhat difficult, and the cumulative final is 40% of the grade which is tough. Attendance isn't mandatory but lots of his test questions are pulled from lectures. Didn't ever use the textbook but definitely but the course reader!

Great professor no doubt but the course material is incredibly hard. Lectures are sometimes hard to stay awake in and there is a lot of reading to be done. He is very nice and genuine during office hours when seeking help. Again, amazing professor but the class is hard to earn a grade you would like. The class averages are under Bs but does curve.

Doug is a really great professor, he is SUPER prepared for lectures and he really wants to make sure you understand, he's willing to put in the time for students who also put in time by studying. His class does take some work and you have to actually study and read, but if you do it's worth it and you can get an A!

One of the dopest and most caring professors you'll find. Super kind, intelligent, and is willing to do anything to help you succeed if you just ask. Alright if you're dead set on taking astronomy, take Leonard! He is an amazing lecturer, obviously knows his stuff and provides plenty of visuals to explain the concepts in his lecture. THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A. I attend every lecture and maintain a high GPA and won't end with a strong grade. 90% of grade is based on 3 tests, last test worth 40%

A GREAT professor! His lectures are easy to follow and he doesn't speed up so that way everyone can understand what he's saying. The class has two midterms, a final and weekly online quizzes. The final is cumulative so study and understand the material throughout the course. If you pay attention on the class and do the readings you should be fine.

Professor Leonard is my favorite professor at State. I'm not majoring in Astronomy, but I did know a fair bit about it before taking the course. He was always happy to answer my never-ending questions and his lectures were fantastic, always super engaging. Some quizzes and a few tests, but all very doable. I definitely recommend his class!

Prof Leonard is a super nice guy and really cares about his students. I definitely would've liked this class a lot more if I had any interest in astronomy but it's doable. I loved this professor! He was extremely caring and was really eye-opening. The whole class is based on quizzes, and there is one reading quiz that you take on your own each week (60% of grade). Then there are two in-class quizzes (20%), and the final test (20%). A ton of reading, but if you pace yourself it's manageable. A super interesting class!

He made class fun and interesting and was incredibly knowledgeable, but not in an annoying or show-off kinda way. He's a huge supporter and help to all his students. Eager to answer questions and really wants to help. Don't be afraid to go to office hours.

Good lectures that cover material in the reading. Midterms have amazing guides posted the week before covering where all the material learned is located for ease of studying or cramming including all the sections read and terms learned. Interesting lectures that are all recorded. He gives all the tools necessary for success, just put in the work.

Coming from a student who doesn't typically give their all into classes, trust me do the work for this class. The teacher is amazing and literally a genius. He knows his stuff, gives amazing planned out lectures, and makes really difficult concepts understandable. If you put in the work, the class is so rewarding and extremely interesting.

Professor Leonard is by far one of the most inspirational and well-organized professors I've come across. My biggest suggestion is to attend his office hours!! He is just amazing at explaining difficult concepts to people who have never taken anything astronomy-related before. An incredibly intelligent and humble guy who wants to help his students.

Professor Leonard is amazing I really loved taking his course! I took astronomy courses before, and I still learned a lot and gained a new perspective. He also discusses the philosophical side of astronomy in this course which I love. He is really passionate about what he teaches, I recommend attending what he offers such as planetarium shows.

You can tell Professor Leonard is really passionate about what he teaches. He's great at breaking down big concepts so they're easier to understand. The whole class is basically a crash course of a bunch of subjects (math, quantum mechanics, physics, etc.) so even if you're not strong in those you learn how they tie into the course overall.

You really have to keep on top of this class to pass. Readings are really important and so are lectures. He does post lectures on Canvas so it is not a big whoop if you miss a few lectures, but he appreciates students who come. He is so energetic and loves his line of work. You can tell he loves astronomy. Study!!!

There is a TON of reading, but if you do the reading and attend the lectures you will do fine. He does offer extra opportunities (he does not call it extra credit bc you don't earn any points) to show your interest and he will bump up your grade by 1 level. There are weekly online quizzes and 3 major tests. He also records all the lectures.

I was not interested in astronomy going into this course, I took it for credit. With Leonard, I am more intrigued with this subject and I feel like I actually learned a lot from it. He is featured in most of the documentaries he shows the class which is super inspiring and cool to see. 3 exams, weekly reading quizzes and he provides a lot of help

this class has been my favorite. you do have to actually study for midterms and finals, as they account for a majority of your grade. but, you learn so much in this class, and difficult material is presented in understandable terms. i have learned so much in this class.

Professor Leonard makes even the most complex astronomy topics engaging and understandable. While the exams are challenging, the weekly quizzes and his helpful lecture videos make studying a breeze. Unstuck study was a game-changer for my test prep!

Grade depends on weekly quizzes and 3 exams (curved). 2 lowest quizzes dropped and cumulative final replaces lowest midterm. Go to the bookstore and buy the course reader - contains powerpoint slides and vocab. You can write in it. Read the textbook every week and attend lectures. He hosts zoom reviews the night before exams.

Doug is an amazing professor. I'm currently taking this course just for credit, but it's truthfully the ONLY class I enjoy going to. You may need to attend lectures and study to get a good grade, but the content is super interesting, and Doug does a great job of explaining things during class and he's also available to talk to during office hours.

Honestly one of my favorite classes I've had at SDSU. The class is LECTURE HEAVY but they are always super interesting and he does a good job at explaining complicated topics. If you're looking for an easy A with no effort this probably isn't the class for you but if you're looking for an interesting course with a passionate professor then it is.

doug is one of my favorite professors at sdsu. he is so passionate and really cares about his students. definitely need to go to lecture or at least rewatch them because tests are mainly based on lectures and textbook readings

Professor Leonard is genuinely so passionate about his teaching, he's still actively involved in the Astronomy community, and he cares about his students. His midterms are easy as long as you actually study; they're totally doable. I would 100% recommend him for your required science class!

You need to put in the work. Take notes while reading textbook and following his lectures. Go to in person lectures. If he emphasizes an idea it will be on the test. Cool concepts, but lectures can be exhausting to think about so grab caffeine. Easy class overall though highly recommend as GE. I forgot to study for test once and still got 90%.

he is an incredible teacher but if you dont pay attention to lectures you're cooked. he is honestly super inspiring and shows a lot of clips of his own works in astronomy. he is super kind and open to help as well.

2 midterm exams and 1 final exam which could replace the grades of one of the lower scoring midterms if it succeeds their scores. Memorize a lot of historical figures, equations (these are always 15% of the exams), concepts, and astronomical things. You only receive a cheat sheet for the final which is 100 questions, but they're all multiple choice

I really enjoyed this course! Doug is a great professor, and even though astronomy is a content heavy course, he kept the lectures engaging and interesting! He was also very good at explaining the concepts, as well as answering questions

prof leonard is a great choice for astr101! the material can be difficult, but if you go to lectures and follow his study guides for exams and you will be just fine. he takes time in lecture to answer questions and has lots of office hours/ review sessions before exams. take him!
