Uncle Doug was one of my favorite professors, he has awesome stories to tell and is a funny guy. Don't expect him to tell you straightforward what's on the test so don't even ask. Grade was based off of 3 exams and the final, that's it. Tests were promised to at least be 50% multiple choice with usually 60 questions or more. The tests are curved.

Great Psych class! Matthews passion for psychology keeps you engaged during lecture; he's quite funny too! His tests are difficult (multiple choice and short answer), but overall not too bad. No hw or papers, just the exams and final. I have definitely learned quite a lot from him. Highly recommend!

He is the chair of the PSYC department. I think if you are passionate about psychology, this is the prof to take! He will be your favorite professor at UWEC. He is caring and his lectures are amazing every time. Such a genuinely great professor.

Dr. Matthews can sometimes use superfluous language to describe something, making it more confusing if you don't have an extensive vocabulary. He is very passionate about psychology which makes his lectures more enjoyable. Only 4 tests make up your grade, so study hard and read the textbook. If you work hard you'll get a good grade.

get ready for yelling. not like, at you, he is just VERY enthusiastic about statistics. he's a pretty tough grader when it comes to homework and tests. you won't get much homework in this class though.

Doug is a very eccentric and funny professor. You can tell he really does care about his students and is very passionate about psychology. But the content that you learn in this class is not easy & either are the tests. Not the class to take if you aren't willing to put in time to study and really understand the material.

Hilarious and brilliant professor. Never a dull moment in his class. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Tests can be challenging, but not unfair.

Professor Matthews is so funny and makes class exciting! The short answers on the exams are toughly graded, so be thorough on them. If you make flashcards and read the chapters (and listen in lecture), the MCQ should be fairly easy. Just put time and effort into it. Also, he has SSAs which is helpful.

Show up to class. He gives good examples that help you on his tests. There are only three tests and then a final, so you need to do good on them. Easy to understand and will explain another way if you don't understand.

I've had two classes with Doug, and he's easily the best prof at this university. He makes every lecture interesting, and he has a great relationship with his students. Although his tests are not easy, it is definitely doable to get an A in the class if you study and scan the textbook. Keep your exam answers short but as precise as possible.

Doug is an energetic prof who definitely keeps the class awake especially for an 8 am. Enthusiastic about what he is teaching and good at giving real life examples. Gives lots of extra credit for Psych 100 but be prepared to study quite a bit and read the chapters if you want an A

Funniest professor ever. Only problem with the class is your only grades are 4 tests, worth 25% each.

Professor Matthews was hilarious, however, sometimes he could get a little rude. His class is based on 4 exams ONLY so if you do bad on the first exam you're pretty much screwed. However, lots of good information and he always told stories and we watched videos. He made class time fun, even when it got boring.

He is a great professor. I would recommend reading the textbook chapters the night before lecture,it will make the lecture flow very nice and definitely help you on the test! Its very easy to pay attention because of how engaged he is, and although there is only four tests to be graded on he offers lots of extra credit. Write the reaction papers!!

Matthews is a GREAT guy. I looked forward to going to his class every day. Although he does tell you that its going to be an incredibly challenging class, he also tells you it will be incredibly rewarding which is 100% true. He was the best prof I have had and he made lectures fun and interesting. Wants you to succeed, work hard and you'll love it!

I thought Doug was an awesome teacher. You only take 4 tests, which include the final. He gives you small extra credit opportunities for each test. He was super funny in lecture and seemed to really care about the students. Overall, as long as you pay attention in lecture, you'll do fine.

Matthews is a really good professor! He's funny and makes class interesting, but you have to go to class or you'll be behind. Print off the slides!!! Take good notes and study hard and you'll do fine. Your grade is made up of 3 exams and the final. Also take advantage of the extra credit options, they're usually just going to UW sporting events!

High quality prof but extremely difficult. He makes you work and learn a lot but he's also hilarious and pretty helpful. Ask a lot of questions and take many notes. Good professor to make connections with. Also took for winterim ADDICTIONS course (highly recommended, not as difficult but very informational.) If you care/know how to learn, you will.

If you like lectures and prefer to sit and listen, this class is for you. Doug is hilarious, and it will be difficult to not pay attention. Although he often gets sidetracked, almost all information you need are on slides uploaded to D2L. The textbook is more supplemental and for charts. Your final grade is made up of four test grades- so STUDY!

A marvelous teacher, he is extremely passionate in what he lectures. Phd. Matthews is so funny, and very down to earth. If you are truly interested in the material (not just in this class in particular but any class he lectures) PhD. Matthews is the teacher you want lecturing to you.

I really enjoyed Dr. Matthews and Psyc 100. He wants you to know the material and gives you many resources like SSAs, SI, and his office hours. You will learn a lot in lectures, so don't skip and come with the notes printed off! He is very funny so going to his class will not be a chore!

Doug is a great professor his lectures are always interesting if you can take him for psych 100 then do it. His tests are not that hard as long as you put in the work and study the lecture outlines. You don't really have to read the whole textbook the summary's worked just fine for me. A suggestion to you is go pick up your scantons and study them.

Lectures: lectures were really allover the place and made me get lost . But after I cope with the way he delivered lecture and wrote his test, I enjoyed it. Doug was a great professor. He really loves his job and you can see it during his lectures. It is a lot of reading but make sure you listen closely during lectures and take notes, most of the tests are more lecture than book. You only get graded on 4 different tests but you do get plenty of extra credit opportunities.

His lectures are very interesting. Class is extremely hard. I had to study tons for each test and go to SI sessions. The only grades for the whole semester are the 4 exams. The final is all the multiple choice of the past exams so study those and it'll save your grade. He also tries to scare people and create anxiety about class you will do fine.

I've taken this professor for both IDIS 125 and PSYC 377 (psychopharm). Doug is a very passionate teacher. He cares about his students and wants to be sure they understand the material. Make friends and study groups in your class, record his lectures and I promise you'll do just fine. He's not rude at all, he's just very sarcastic and quirky.

Matthews mostly grades on what he talks about in class, so I pretty much never read the textbook. Of course, he says to read the textbook but I did fine without. He has very few grades so you pretty much have to do well on the tests. Sometimes his instructions are unclear, but he is a good lecturer and clearly very passionate about what he does.

I took this class online over the summer. Each week had recorded lectures, assigned reading, and an online quiz and reaction paper about the material. Because it was online, everything was open notes so the quizzes and final weren't super hard. Prof was very good about answering emails quickly. Very friendly but lectures were kind of long & boring.

Doug was a really awesome guy, even though his lectures aren't focused, at all. He goes on a lot of tangents, and attendance isn't mandatory. Doug can be a little intimidating but is a really caring professor. He says he has no empathy for students, but he's just trying to scare you. There's a ton of extra credit and only 4 tests. Exams aren't the easiest thing and there are only 4 in total. You really have to study the material and the book to do well on them. Lectures seem long at times, but he will usually make them a little more interesting. Overall a funny guy and really seems passionate about the topic. Matthews is one of the coolest guys in a lecture setting. While outside of lecture, he isn't the most approachable and is intimidating. He doesn't have office hours, and will suggest to meet with his SA's rather him. Matthews was super interesting to listen to, and he's super funny. STUDY HARD for tests (4), they're not easy. Do all extra credit!!

I was not expecting to care at all about PSYCH 100. I thought it'd be an easy A that I wouldn't worry about. But Dr. Matthews with his good will, humor and expectations made me remember this class forever, and about Psych forever which is probably the point. The exams are only tough if you don't care to study or try, which I didn't at first.

I am posting this solely to debunk the rumors about Doug. He was truly my favorite professor and I would DEFINITELY take him again. Hes such a caring guy and yes, he doesnt have majorly structured PowerPoints, but thats what makes them interesting. Yes, the class is based on 4 exams and a couple quizzes, but if you put in the effort, youll pass

Dr. Matthews was great for IDIS 125, Introduction to Neuroscience. He does a good job of making the material interesting and relevant, however he expects you to know what he covers in class. If you attend class and give a little effort outside of class to take in the material in your own way, which he helps you do, you'll do just fine.

He is a great teacher, makes classes enjoyable in the way he teaches. Textbook readings are given but not required, I do recommend reading it though because it is veryyyy helpful and honestly pretty necessary to do well.

I truly don't understand where the criticism comes from towards Doug. He is honestly the best professor I've had. His lectures are very fast paced but go by fast. I always looked forward to attending them and I never got bored. The class is hard, but it's Neuroscience- I'm not sure what else you'd expect. I'll be searching for courses led by him.

Doug is super passionate about neuroscience and absolutely hilarious. He's a pretty tough grader and he talks super fast but if you record the lectures you'll be fine! I think he was a great guy and super interesting to listen to!

Doug is awesome. One of the most important professors on campus. He worked very hard to have this class in-person. He truly cares about his students and really inspires you to learn and become the best student you can be. Lots of work, but if you truly enjoy your major, you have nothing to worry about. I loved Matthews as a professor, he has been one of my favorites. The only grades in the class are the exams and some weekly quizzes. He is hilarious and is very easygoing. He always knows how to make his lectures entertaining. If you do miss his class often you might struggle but as long as you study it's not hard.

There's no assignments, but a lot of extra credit opportunities. Doug is a great person and hilarious. He's not very organized, but knows what he's talking about. Study, read the book, and pay attention in class and you'll be fine. Go to the SAA/SI office hours too! They're very helpful. Take an hour out of each day to study just for this class.

I really enjoyed taking Psyc 100 with Doug. He's super informal which surprised me going into my first year of college, but it made the transition easier. You can also tell he genuinely cares about his students. I would highly recommend studying and reading the book because there's a lot of content covered, but I loved having him as a professor!

Doug doesnt deserve all the criticism he gets on here. He is a very experienced professor and is clearly very knowledgeable in psychology. He comes off as intimidating but it feel like he should be. If you have questions he will definitely help you. Your grade is 4 exams and a few quizzes. There are a ton of options for extra credit also!

When I read about Doug I was intimidated. But, I made sure I did all of the extra credits and studied a lot before the exams. I would say to ensure that you are at every lecture and to prepare for the tests well. You can't slack off in this class. However, if you put in the work you will succeed, don't be too scared. He was scary yet great.

Half of the exam points are short answer based. If you mess up on one short answer section on a test, you will be doomed!

Doug is awesome. I've had him for Behavioral Neuro and Psych of Perception. Psych of Perception is WAY easier. Bunch of reading, but a relatively easy course. Take notes, memorize the pathways and anatomy, and use notecards for the simple terms and you should be fine. Doug is one of my favorite professors at UWEC and is highly recommended!

Doug gets so much hate he doesn't deserve. Go to his office hours and SI sessions, these help with exams and he gets to know you as a person. Reading the textbook is a must, voice memo the lectures, he'll say important info that's not in the slides. He's really a good and caring person. Put in the work and time and you'll pass. he makes class fun.

This class is tough. Attend the lectures/labs and record his lectures, you will thank yourself later. If this material interesting to you the class is not as bad, especially if you find him enjoyable. This class has very traditional university lecture and examinations, but he does curve. Again, study!!!!!

Doug is a great guy with high standards, good lectures, and he is hilarious. Essay tests require a lot of memorization and a lots of independent proactive work to prepare. He will also try to intimidate you into doing well. I find that doesn't always work for me, so the best mentality is to stay confident in yourself. RECORD THE LECTURES trust me.

He is a well rounded and very versatile professor. His lecture materials make sense and he is available to help anyone who struggles to grasp a concept. If you put in effort in his class, you will be rewarded.

Douglas is legitimately hard. He cares a lot that you actually understand psychology, though he cares too much at times. He is a hard grader where if you miss a few words in an explanation he will take away half your points for it. I get that some things you have to be perfect in, but I feel an intro to psychology class is not it.

This is a hard class but if you actually put in the time and study, it's really not that bad. I didn't read the book at all just used it for the pictures that he goes over. I would record the lectures because he can go through things fast sometimes and that way if you don't get everything down you can go back and relisten.

Doug will bring the best out of you as a student if you take any of his classes. His classes have lots of material and he expects a lot of you(record lectures and listen over again, make your own study groups, etc...), but you will grow to appreciate and value all the knowledge he gives you. He is very entertaining and makes the information fun.

Doug is awesome! Hilarious guy. I understand why some people don't like him or his teaching style, but I prefer his energetic lectures where he draws on the whiteboard (record the lectures) over a more "normal" professor's boring slide show. He sends emails letting you know what to study, so while this class is hard, with effort you can do well.

Doug is an extremely brilliant individual. He can be rough around the edges at times and although he expects a lot from his students he gives the same hard-work he expects from them. He truly encompasses what it means to have a passion for learning, and you can see that through his teaching and works. Unlike some profs. he puts the time in.

Class is based on quizzes and tests only. Expectation in this class is to finish the reading before attending the lecture. The slides for the lecture are used as talking points and pictures for better understanding of a concept. I suggest memorizing neurobiological pathways and steps of action potentials. Tests are definition based, free-response.

He does expect a lot but he also returns the effort. He can be a bit scatter brained at times, but he actually takes feedback to heart. He now sends out emails before exams of what to go through and study since students in the past have told him doing so would be helpful. Overall, he is caring and wants to see his students succeed.

Professor Matthews is the most intelligent professor I have ever had. He knows so much and makes class extremely enjoyable. It is a tough class and your entire grade is a couple tests and a presentation. He gives you all the tools to learn so much and do well in this class but the content can be difficult. He is a great lecturer, incredibly funny. He maintains engagement through out class and its enjoyable. However, his grading criteria seems completely subjective and incredibly hard to study for at times. Studying application is important, comprehending the information rather than multiple choice. You must explain answers thoroughly in exams.

I loved Doug! I purposefully took a class with him again. He makes lectures fun and the time just flies by. All his exams are open ended questions, but they are on all the things from lecture. They are hard, but all the questions come from content you should know. He is so energetic and friendly. Definitely my favorite professor!

I love Dr. Matthews! He is a great professor. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the content he teaches. This class was much harder than IDIS 125 with him, but it is a 300 level compared to 100 level. Don't fall behind in his class. And make sure you read the papers he puts on canvas :). Great guy!!!

Matthews is awesome. He really cares that his students are learning the material. He has engaging and fun lectures. Not terribly difficult but definitely need to study outside of class.

Its true. His class was incomprehensibly hard but he also works hard to make sure you understand everything. You will spend a lot of time working on this class but it will pay off. He usually rounds grades as long as he sees you're trying. Personally, I loved the way he taught and the emphasis he places on understanding rather than memorizing.

Doug is a great professor--he's passionate about neuro and brings so much energy and enthusiasm to teaching. Grades are very exam heavy but the exam is exactly what's discussed in class so if you study and take notes there shouldn't be any surprises. He only loses points for not being very organized. Would definitely take a class from him again! :)

Doug's class is challenging but rewarding. He's an engaging lecturer who expects a lot, but provides helpful study guides. While the exams require extensive memorization, using resources like unstuckstudy can make prep more efficient. Overall, a worthwhile course if you're willing to put in the work.

Although he is a tough grader he provides you with all the information you need in order to succeed in this class including permitting students to record lectures (he does fail to provide rubrics). Psych of Addictions is Doug's "fun" class, and I absolutely recommend it. Much easier than intro neuro but he still pushed us to do good work. All the test questions are short answer but if you record the lectures, the questions are predictable. Great class for upper division psych elective!

He is very intelligent and does a great job of explaining difficult concepts in a way you can understand. A background of neuro would be helpful in this class, but I don't think necessary. Your grade is based on 4 tests and like 3 projects, including a big group project and paper at the end. He doesn't give rubrics, but it's not hard to do well.

I remember taking this class several semesters ago. I felt incredibly stressed at the time. But I've never taken a more comprehensive, informative, and engaging class in psychology since. The information really stuck with me. I learned in a way that most classes fail to accomplish. I regret not taking more of his classes.
