Don't take his class. He was snarky and rude to students who didn't understand, his labs were disorganized and made no sense (and if you had a bad TA you're screwed). The final was one of the hardest things I've ever taken and despite studying for hours it brought my grade from an A to B and he even got mad at us for the average being so bad.

Required way too much work out of class; 10-15 hrs/week just doing post labs. Very snarky and rude if you don't understand a concept. Egotistical and doesn't understand that we don't have unlimited time to dedicate to a two credit class.

I don't know whether Dr Mulford is any good at lectures (never attended his lecture class), I can certainly say that he is just awful at CHEM202L. For a 2 credit course he expects you to work as if it were a 4 credit course. Worse, he never bothers to explain some very important concepts. Such professors make students loathe chemistry. Sad!

If you don't REALLY need to take a Chem lab, don't take it if Mulford is the instructor. The difficulty is outrageous, he REALLY doesn't explain much (and sometimes anything at all) so you either have to go to office hours or you fail. Doesn't care much about students. Coming from Chem 150L, I expected the lab to be fairly easy. Hell reigned after I was assigned the first Pre-Lab and Post-Lab assignments, which took a total of 15 hours every week. Worst professor Ive had at Emory. The way he organized this lab was dreadful, with the lab often lasting nearly 4 hours due to problems in the methods given. Additionally he spends too much time in the lecture which is almost unbearable. The pre and post labs were often just ridiculous, testing us on topics above our current level and with no help.

Typical Chem labs are supposed to be challenging; however, professor Mulford's class is unreasonable. You will not be able to complete a post-lab without attending a TA office hour and will still spend 5-8 hours a week on it. One of my labs have gone until 7:30 pm (5:50 is the end time) and I learned nothing. Also, his jokes are not funny!!!

The new chem curriculum at emory is HORRIBLE. The chem 202 class and the chem 202L lab are on different topics each week, and it is up to the student to learn everything almost independently. I am a pre med student but I also wanted a life, Douglas Mulford made sure that was not possible. The work takes hours, and the class is only 2 credits, AVOID

This class was a ridiculous amount of work for only being 2 credits. I easily spend 4-5 hours a week doing pre and post lab activities, go to TA sessions and Mulford himself and still get terrible grades . The labs themselves are extremely long and often end late. The lab is not reflective of what you learn in lecture and you are left feeling lost.

The pre and post labs take around 5 or more hours a week which should NOT be the case for a 2 credit class. His lab notebook checks are also pretty unreasonable so if you're stuck with him, make sure to put all your calculations and observations in the book. The written final is very calculations-based and the wet-lab portion is UNFAIR.

This is the worst lab I have taken. Mulford is nice in person, but his class is not. People are not joking when they said they spent AT LEAST 6hrs+ on assignments a week (not including office hours). The lab final was hard. If you get a bad TA, you are done with your grade. The worst part is, Mulford does not understand how difficult this class is.

Disorganized, unfair, mean, uncaring - there are so many negative things you can say about Dr Mulford. The lecture part of his lab is bad explanation going hand in hand with even worse science jokes. His assignments are crazy hard & take too much time for a 2 credit course. There had not been a single lab where something didn't go wrong. Terrible!

The GSIs do all the grading. Each pre and post lab took HOURS. The class is 2 credits and somehow more work than every other class I had. The Theory and Practice test is extremely difficult and 25% of your grade. The actual assignments are difficult, time consuming, and the lab notebook is also a time suck. Good luck!

Even though people are saying he's changed his lab around, I disagree. It's still an insane amount of work for a 2 credit class, and he's a very harsh grader (he graded my lab section after my grad student bailed). The worst Lab I've ever taken. Mulford does not care about the well being of his students. I did more work for the lab than chem lecture, which was ridiculous. This should be a 5 credit course with the amount of work he gives. On top of that, Mulford and the TA's are such harsh graders. Most people don't have a choice but just get ready.

Chances are he'll be the only prof. available for 203L, so since you can't choose someone else I'll just say be prepared to put in a ton of time into this class outside of lab. He teaches at a level way above what most students can understand. Office hours w/ grad students are the way to go.

I had him for CHEM 202 Lecture during COVID and CHEM 203L in the fall. The lab had so much work. I know so many that have just dropped the class, not even lecture. None of the reactions worked and you received points off for his own faults. He's so enthusiastic, but that's for the pleasure of teaching his class, rather than helping his students.

Don't be tricked by his enthusiasm, that man only cares about his course, despite his failed experiments. It is only lab but he acts like it is the most important class. Is this A worth it? Life? Torn apart by 7h/w assignments. Lectures? Confusing, even irrelevant. Breakdowns? Lost track counting. Thanksgiving? Didn't even go home to max out study time for the final, which covers 95% of material he fails to explain. Douglas cares nothing but himself, and would genuinely take pleasure in our suffering.

Be prepared to spend at least 9 hours per week on pre/post lab work and notebook. Spends way too much time lecturing before the actual lab and sometimes unable to finish the wet lab itself. Labs are super fast-paced and are graded by TAs not by the professor. Super stressful for a class that is worth 2 credits.

This professor is by far the worst educator I have come across during my time here at Emory. The class was incredibly stressful and took up a minimum of six hours each week for the pre-lab, post-lab, and notebook. This professor is inconsiderate, out of touch with his students, and an inadequate lecturer. I'm glad to never have to take him again.

Class is really difficult - be ready to spend 8-10 hours on assignments outside of class a week on top of 3-4 hours in lab (I got out of class early or on time only a few times). Grading criteria is really unclear and Mulford is super unorganized. You probably dont have a lot of choice for lab, but be prepared to be VERY confused.

The workload for this class is absolutely ridiculous and took the most time out of my week even though this is a two credit class. At the beginning of the semester the grading was also super strict but got better over time. A professor that starts a small quiz at the 0st minute of the class. So if you don't run fast never come! Also, note that the grade is distribtued so that you get 0 or full credit for each question, so be an asslicker to the pf and the ta so you get grade, or u get nothing (though this is typical of all other classes)

The sheer amount of homework is insane for a two-credit course. Procedures were almost always confusing and LONG (lasting the entire lab) and Post Labs are graded HARSHLY. You can't really avoid him bc he's the only 203L teacher but just be prepared. Go to office hours and DON'T procrastinate

Terrible professor. He does not care for you to do well. One of the only professors who willingly curves down at the very end of the semester, in addition to the harsh grading from the TA's, just to land a certain average among classes. Mulford fails to empathize with students at any level. He is unforgiving, condescending, and harsh. This was my worst experience of any Emory class. I sincerely regret taking this course, and I am taking a semester off chem just to avoid taking him again. May seem like an euthanistic professor but is cold and rude outside of class. My friend waved and said hello to Dr. Mulford and the best he could muster up was a grunt. If there is one thing I learned from 203L with Mulford, it is that some people go into academia for the pleasure of torturing their students. (Most of the high reviews on here were written by Dr. Mulford himself, he is going to have to write a lot more them after this semester.)

I think I'm a diligent student. I haven't had much trouble with the course itself. However, I can't help but notice how strict and insensitive Dr. Mulford is as a teacher. During our final, he pranced around in a Santa hat, and he seems trigger-happy in referring people to the HC. To offer some pragmatic advice: do the HWs early and you'll be fine.

This 2 credit course destroyed my mental health. The assignments demanded so much mentally and a good grade is not guaranteed even with 3+ TAs' help during office hours. He destroyed my mental, physical, and spirtual health. The audacity and irony of him to preach mental health during the last lab despite being the one to rob mine all semester. Mulford has single handedly ruined my life. There is absolutely no reason for a lab class to be this difficult. Dr. Mulford has by far been my worst experience at Emory. I am literally a chemistry major and dreaded coming to lab every week because of him. Some professors assign fair grades (understandable), but he takes PRIDE in his dismal course averages. Very willing to curve down if we all did well but will not curve up if averages are bad.

avoid this class, and if you can't, cry about it now so you don't have to waste time crying about your lab final grade when he so conveniently releases them in the middle of finals week.

I would say avoid this class if possible, but unfortunately he is the only option for 203L, which is a mandatory course for pre-med students. He puts on a happy-go-lucky facade, but is truthfully a very mean-spirited person, which is reflected in the way he individually treats his students. It's a tough class and can be a little bit on the ruder end sometimes, especially when you ask him about things regarding graded work. Not very forgiving either, I put a really good amount of work into this class but he still made it impossible.

I never had a professor care less about his student's learning/mental health. His grading policy is extremely strict; he will even sometimes deduct points retroactively. He implied that the reason that the final median (C-) was so low was due to the student's failure to prepare when the actual reason was due to his inability to educate.

I spend 365 days a year, 7 days a week of my life hating. I wake up hating. I hate while sleeping. At night I can't fall asleep of the sheer burning scalding hatred within my heart, only falling asleep out of pure exhaustion. Then in the mornings I wake up with fresh hatred in my heart and mind so I can prepare for the next day to hate even more.

Emory needs to do something about this man because he's honestly the reason I want to drop out

This class was TERRIBLE. Finished with the pre-lab? Nope, not done. Done with the notebook? Start the post-lab! And once you've completed the assignments, be aware of the HARSH grading criteria... Giving an assignment about college students' mental health after an extremely difficult final and beast of a workload was a joke. You should be ashamed.

Genuinely made me have mental breakdowns and cry over a TWO CREDIT COURSE. who does he think he is parading around in a santa hat while students are taking a test that he provides absolutely no guidance and direction for? then decides to post a 70 something median while disregarding the fact that the AVERAGE was in the 60s? Dr. Mulford was a teacher's pet growing up and now lives to crush dreams. His quirky, nice guy persona is just a facade. I am 99% certain he and his wife get together every Friday night and bond over the points he takes off on assignments. The man sends info. about the atomic bomb that was our final and has the gall to add a ;) to his emails.

WORST CLASS EVER. I NEVER EVER EVER WANT TO EXPERIENCE THIS CLASS EVER AGAIN. THE FRUSTRATION IS CRAZY. THE WAY THE AVERAGE WAS A F AND THIS MAN HAD 0 MERCY TO CHANGE THE GRADING SCALE. IN ADDITION, HOMEBOY LIED WHEN SAYING HE COMPARED GRADES WITH BIOLAB, SO THE GRADING IS FAIR. BIOLAB HAS NO FINAL THAT CAN DROP YOUR GRADE LIKE THAT!!!!

I've never written a review until now. This is the single worst professor/teacher that I have ever had in my life. Behind his "peace" email sign-offs is someone who could not care less about his students or their grades. Just hope that you never have to miss a lab for any reason. Avoid him AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!

I took 203L for fun. Grading was inconsistent. A clear disconnect existed between Mulford and the TAs so that Mulford accused students of violating the honor code. Office hours were regularly swamped. OneNote was a nightmare to use as the notebooks. Mulford's toxic positivity exacerbated these issues. CHEM 203L with Mulford was a disappointment.

I am writing this while I attempt a heinous post lab and regret my life choices. I was happy before 204L started this semester. But as soon as I walked into atwood 240 I felt my joy and soul being drained out of my body. I should have just drank my UV compound so I didn't have to go to lab this week.

The way that my GPA dropped so much that I am not getting into summer internships sucks. All because of this man. Karma is very real:).

I could not think of a more horrible teacher that I have ever had in all of my time in school. Mulford goes beyond being the ordinary bad teacher, but rather a manifestation of all of your anxieties. Too much time is spent cramming assignments with unfair deadlines to learn the the actual content of the class, and refuses to reveal grading criteria

The grading criteria is not disclosed to students and your success in the course very much depends on your ability to go to GSI/His Office Hours (which can be difficult if you have other labs/research commitments). Strict grading and I dread lab each week: run if you can & take 204 in the fall.

This class has been a harrowing experience. Go to at least one GSI session a week (not one of his office hours) or you won't do well as its unclear sometimes what exactly some questions are asking of you. The lab sessions themselves are kinda fun and you better pray you have a good GSI. If he's the only one teaching your semester, good luck.

Like everyone else is saying, terrible class & terrible professor. It's a 2 credit course with 3+ hours of work to do before, during, AND after class (prelab assignment, prelab notebook, lab itself, postlab assignment, postlab notebook). The only way to get good grades on the assignments is going to the GSI office hours.

I am not exaggerating. Maybe I've just had some pretty okay professors for most of my life, but Douglas Mulford is far and away the worst professor I have ever had.

He is 100% out to get his students and does not care about consequences. He does not consider talking to students first when resolving misunderstandings. Attempts to be charming during pre-lab lectures but genuinely does not care about the well-being of students. Not a good representation of the Emory Chem department.

A harrowing experience with this professor. He is vague and blames students for his vague assignments. Huge disconnect between his GSI and his assignments. Will try his utmost best to see you fail.

Your experience and success in any of Mulford's classes will depend solely on the TA you get and your ability to attend office hours. But in any case, this will be a nightmare of workload, despite the misleading 2-credit weighting. I highly recommend taking this in one of your less credit-heavy semesters. Otherwise, good luck. You will need it.

This is by far the worst professor I've had during my college experience. He assumes the absolute worst of his students, gives 5 credits worth of work every week, and he thinks that all of your time should be dedicated to his class. BEWARE. If there is ANYONE else you can take, please do so.

Large amount of work given, spends an entire 3rd of the lab time on lecture, feels pleasure in forcing the students to cram the experiments and inconvenient online notebook submissions into a shorter period, Post and pre-labs are usually quite difficult, incredibly harsh grader, does not believe in partial credit, is genuinely just extremely taxing

Dr.Mulford is the worst representation of Emory University I have ever experienced. I believe he himself is half the reason the students at this school are so depressed. Then gives an assignment at the end of the year on "mental health." Disgrace.

He is the WORST professor I have ever had. He genuinely has no idea who you are, and does not care about the future of his students what so ever. I retook the class to prove I could do better the second time and he honor counciled me for using my OWN notes when doing the post labs. I am so sorry you have to take him. My two worst grades at Emory.

Horrific professor. Needs to be fired. I have never seen such an evil man that is literally out to get his students (who plants wrong answers in his own TA's answer codes to honor council kids?!?!!?!!?). Maybe if the class was somewhat reasonable the TA's could actually feel like they understood the material and wouldn't need answer codes...

Mulford is dismissive and unaccomodating to student's concerns. Don't expect any leniency or flexibility from him. Also, he tries to seem quirky and fun, but beware—it's just a facade!

It feels like he's trying to make students fail. Example 1: I check my homework weekly with the TA, but the GSI's guidance often doesn't align with Mulford's academic terorrism, costing me 5-10 points per week. Ex2: He released a post-lab key as an excuse just to be able to grade harsher. Doesn't deserve to be in academia and should be replaced.

absolutely traumatic experience in 203L. everyone is confused about the grading criteria, including the GSIs and Muly does nothing to help. vindictive, unsympathetic, genuinely goes out of his way to honor code kids. takes joy in starting beef with a bunch of 19yos.

Unnecessarily difficult. Grading criteria for postlabs are unclear and graded very harshly. Prepare to lose postlab points even after initial grading. Rarely gives points on regrades. Points are sometimes taken at random or with no explanation. Gives very little info on the final. If you don't have to take this class, just don't. :)

Mulford isn't a bad lecturer, which is why I think he should be teaching a lecture instead. While the final is fair to the class content, the class itself is what is unfair-- grading criteria is unclear for post labs & pre-labs and TAs often can only help so much. There's only one exam and it's at the end. Also, he's an honor code junkie! BEWARE.

Mulford should not have been allowed to designed the 203 Lab grading structure. You can go to office hours, put in the work, and your grade will still not be reflective of your knowledge. Its criminal that my worst grade this semester will be in CHEMISTRY LAB??? He takes random points off of post lab assignments, and the test is impossible.

Mulford is the worst professor at Emory. Hands. Down. His grading criteria is the worst. Not only that, the final exam was ruthless-- absolutely no partial credit given. Office hours don't work, I tried. He even released the wrong answer key on purpose and docked points for our "correct answers." What a guy.

BEWARE: this dude uses this "happy-go-lucky" spirit so that he can hide the fact that he wants to lower our GPAs to feel pleasure. If this class isn't a requirement, then please don't take it for your mental and physical health. The actual lab is rushed and rubrics for grading isn't given until you turn it in so you can't ever get all the points.

This class has been the most frustrating experience I've had at Emory. Points are deducted left and right for the smallest things. Final exam SEEMED fair, but was harshly graded with no curve. Professor Mulford seems to set students up for failure by finding any way to send them to the Honor Council. Don't take this class if you have other options.

I will admit that he improved since last year but still bad. he takes points off at every opportunity (minus 5% on a whole postlab for a single missing charge on 1 q?)need office hours. final seemed fair but was graded super harshly.

Mulford had me questioning my mental health the entire semester. While he did lessen the workload this year compared to previous years, I still found it incredibly challenging to do well. The final should not be as bad as it is. I'm sorry to anyone who has to take 203L with him in the future.

Worst professor at Emory. I wish they had other options for lab teachers because if you are premed, be ready to be SCREWED over by this teacher. Professor Mulford's 203L is way harder than it would ever need to be. There are tedious and unecessary pre and post-labs that require far more time outside of lab than would be expected of a 2 credit course. Professor Mulford is also extremely unaccommodating and will not listen to reason for any student excuses (even the most valid ones). -1000/10

Honestly, I preferred this lab over 150L and 202L. Only had to do like 3 assignments each week and didn't have to handwrite those bs procedures. The labs were cool but the few assignments we had were graded harshly. Make sure you go to GSI office hours for help on pre and post labs - will save you so much time and stress. Final isn't awful.

The class is fine in terms of work. However, the post-labs are a big part of the grade, and the grading is so nitpicky that it's almost impossible to get a hundred. Mulford is also difficult to get a hold of, and when you do, he comes off as passive-aggressive.

Dr. Mulford makes you feel like you have a learning disability. He also called his students entitled for wanting an A in the class. Let that speak for itself. I know you premeds have to take this class anyways though. GL.

He is evil and actively looks for reasons to take off points. One small mistake and it's a -10 on the post lab. For not teaching the content, it is strange to scrutinize every part of our work. Unfortunately he is unavoidable as he is the only 203 lab instructor. I will celebrate and maybe even make a school donation the day he is replaced.

Kinetically unfavorable class. I aged significantly during the course of this semester and felt the five stages of grief every time he graded a post-lab assignment. 203L is much harder than the 203 lecture, not for the content but for the teaching that corresponds with it.

I went into the final exam with a very high A. Like very high. After getting my final score back, I think I'd be lucky to finish with a flat B. This is ridiculous.

I hate this man with a passion unlike anything. Studied for this final more than I did lecture and it destroyed my grade.This man is evil. He spends his lectures being all happy and then is extremely passive aggressive one on one. I would cross the street without looking before his class, wish him nothing but the worse truly.

Dr. Mulford is clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about chem, but the same cannot be said on how to run a class. I said that he's hilarious because he is laughably strict on the grading rubric. No partial credit, no margin for error, and he loves to honor code people even for using the same image as their lab partner.

Takes off so many points. I can't even. Too difficult for a 2 CREDIT LAB. You have to take him though, so my advice is suck up to your TAs, don't cheat or you WILL get honor coded, and go to office hours. He'll basically give you the answers for the post-labs, but you'll be screwed if you don't fully understand it.

Good lecturer, but with very unclear grading standards and poor communication. A 2-credit course simply should not take that huge amount of time, and going to office hours should be a plus, but not a requirement to get good grades. The final exam is difficult and completely different from the previous Chem lab's final; be prepared for that.

unfortunately, there is no avoiding mulford. work hard to get full points on prelabs, postlabs, etc to cushion the final lab exam. final exam average was ~70 and there is no curve. spent more time and energy to do well in this course than lecture, which is unreasonable for a 2 credit course. decent lecturer but very harsh grader

Extremely difficult grader. Make sure to turn in all post labs on time because 1 day late = -0.5% on final grade. Usually spent 2 days a week in TA office hours and ~4.5 hours on each post lab.

Unreasonable, unconcerned, focused only on screwing students over. Sad seeing a prof that has lost sight of spirit of education & pursuing a bizarre agenda/vendetta against students—not exaggerating. This is the one bad rating I've given, & I give forgiving, optimistic ones. Has no redeeming qualities. 200+ bad ratings should alert higher-ups tbh.
