Hilarious and cynical, greatest class ever
Willing to help with all your needs

He makes the information really interesting.
He's not cute
Good teacher
very entertaining, my favourite class
Tells stories using funny voices...like kids' stories, but with legal info!

Arrogant, crappy prof...

Arrogant Mormon, but v. intelligent, witty and knowledgeable, best blaw prof ever
No Comments
best prof ever. stories alone make it worth coming to class.
He's great!
He's a no-nonsense prof. He believes that for him to lecture from the text is a waste of our time - more profs should take notes on his teaching style. Give lots of easy to understand examples. Loves his job and it shows. Would take his classes again.
great guy, hard classes
Great prof...really knows his stuff...and is good looking
Great prof. Learned a lot from his classes. Exams are tough but the curve will help.
Arrogant, but hilarious. Uses tons of examples, however all exams are m/c and are tough. Awesome prof.
Hard exams. Study hard.
Awesome stories. The only class I look forward to going too. But tests are kinda hard; sometimes ambigious questions.
Great prof - loves his job, and it shows. Exams are tough but fair. Learned more by going to class than anything else. Applies concepts to real-life examples. Wish he taught more courses.
Tough exams, great examples...I won't get an A in his class but I learned more than in most courses I've aced. Great prof.
One of the best profs there. He makes the material relavent and interesting. Great examples, fun lectures. I'd take any course offered with him. He is an example to all profs.
Amazing prof. you won't believe how much you'll learn from him and how much you will long for each class of his. I don't think you'll even care what mark you'll get in the course cuz you'll walk out of it with more than you'll ever get from any other course! I wish the Univ had more profs like him.
One of the most entertaining profs I've ever had. His examples and stories are reason enough to go to class. He's not afraid of letting his personal opinions slip through, it's nice to see a prof that isn't afraid to shrug off the politically correct bandwagon once in awhile.
excellent!
Excellent instructor. Great stories that entertain and teach. Really Hot.
Some profs in this school are too academic and don't know what their really talking about... but Peterson is not one of those. He gives us real advice and useful information that you won't find in a textbook.
Incredible prof. If you can get into his class, you will not be disappointed. Invest your money here for a huge return. He brings incredible practical and useful learning to law in the business and everday context. His courses should be a core component of the business programs.
Wow, quite the Doug Fan Club we have going on here! I'm almost frightened to think how big Mr. Pederson's ego would get if he were to read this. Lord knows it's big enough already... in any case, Doug is friendly, personable, and certainly makes class interesting. Highly recommended. I just wish he would give real exams instead of multiple choice.
love this prof. hes cocky but knows his stuff and knows how to teach.
Peterson tells a lot of entertaining stories that will make you want to become a lawyer. He's surprisingly approachable and really wants his students to do well. He also keeps the class averages low so it's not impossible to get an A. He's an awesome prof and is indeed very hot.
Great Prof, because you never have to go to his class. For Blaw 301, I didn't go to a single class after the first mid-term (when I saw that all his questions were directly from the book), and I got an A+. Take the extra time you have (since you're not going to class) to read the textbook and his notes, and you're set.
Great prof, one of the best in the faculty.
unbelievable teacher. Could make any class interesting. The only class in University I was never bored in. Tests aren't hard, and are NOT cumulative. I'd take anything he was teaching.
Dry humour and sarcastic but he's very clear and his exams are fairly straightforward.
His exams are straightforward, but kind of tricky too. If you study well you'll do good. He makes the classes very interesting and is a genuinely nice guy!
I seriously doubt there is a better prof in the faculty. The workload is very light, but despite that you will learn more useful information in this class than the other ones you are taking combined. Also, if you are ever planning on opening your own business this class is an absolute must.
I found his class to be very interesting, and would love to take another one of his classes. I found his tests fair (you need to know the material really well) and would definately recommend him.
Awesome prof; great stories about real life business. Will give you free legal advice if you need it. The class itself is really easy; tests are straight from the text book so beware the curve. Really high class average.
I can't believe how many people are raving about Doug. To say the man is an egomaniac is to call an elephant "big." He has a very high opinion of himself an delivers rant-filled lectures. I suspect he makes up answers when asked hard questions. Still, you can't help but like him. Read the textbook - he uses the textbook exam question bank.
best teacher i have ever had. makes class fun. uses great real life example. Funny as well.
He taught me that arrogance can be a viable subsitute for knowledge.
Smart man. Interesting & applicable rants in class. And if you don't agree he doesn't care. I love that-because we all need to develop our own opinions, and we're entitled to them.
Is very arrogant and cocky. He is the most overrated prof in the school but is really a poor lecturer at best. He does not bring ouyt the best in his students.
Excellent professor, one of the best at the UofA, sure one could argue that he's a bit arrogant but he has the knowledge/experience/credentials to back it up. He's actually extremely helpful in and out of class. I would DEFINITELY recommend taking his classes.
Pretty good prof. Would often go off on tangent stories in BUEC 342, which were way more interesting than the material. The midterm and final for this class weren't too hard, and I ended up skipping most classes and just reading the text. Attendance isn't mandatory at all. Can be a bit arrogant, but he's a lawyer, so it's expected I guess.
Great prof, tells it like it is. Interesting to listen to... one of few business profs with actual real-life experience! Doesn't just teach out of the textbook. Very fair, funny and informative prof would highly reccomend. Study pretty hard though his tests arent hard but sure aint easy.
great class can apply concepts learned easily to the real world. great prof teaches in a way in which you retain the information really well. loads of reading and exams totally difficult so probably don't expect an a, but if you looking for a great prof peterson is the man!
If you are about to enter into a class with Doug, take his 'life lessons' with a grain of salt. Students are too busy idolizing him or being mesmerized by him to realize that the guy is too dam lazy to administer real exams and that his classes are used as a platform to propagate his right wing views.
Seriously one of the best profs I've had so far. He must be the most likeable arrogant person ever. Going to class isn't necessary since the tests rely heavily on the textbook, but it's good to show up for his rants.
Wow!! This guy is the most amazing prof ever!! His lectures are entertaining, you will never be bored and you will definitely learn a lot. He is also extremely helpful, which is great. Taking a class with him is a must!! I wish he taught every B Law class, he almost makes me want to change my major, or maybe even go into law myself.
No doubt he is one of the most entertaining profs and his lectures will never bore you. But I have to admit his exams were hard. He really tests your ability to apply the concepts. Its NOT one of those read your book,do your easy multiple choice type course. You get one minute per question for the midterms. If you are a slow reader you are screwed
His classes are very interesting and entertaining. Highly recommended.
Very entertaining. Highlight of my day to go to class and hear a story. Tough course but worth it in the end.
Amazing prof! I never wanted to miss a single class with him. Very entertaining and very helpful. highly recommended!
No need to go to classes memorize the text and you have a guaranteed A!
Definetely dissapointed of the the huge fan club doug's got, the most egotistical, arogant people i've ever seen, uses the classroom as a platform to propegate his beliefs and business interests
Definetely one of the best professors I have ever had. Teaches using real world examples. Class stories are entertaining. Exam questions can be a bit tricky though. Make sure to read and understand textbook and you'll do fine.
Clearly intelligent and a skilled prof, but he actually said to a mixed-race class that the 1950s-1960s was the best time to be alive. It was not meant as ****, but showed a bit of an economist bias.
By far the best prof in UofA School of Business. His classes are so interesting and you learn unbelievable life applicable skills. Exams are difficult but his classes are absolutely worth it- so refreshing to have a knowledgeable, well-spoken and passionate teacher.
Doug is the funniest teacher EVER! It really helps the material stick. Exams are hard, but doable as long as you read the questions carefully and study hard..I guess easier said than done.
Great prof. - really interesting. Uses examples to help make the material stick. Exams are hard, study & read the questions well.
If you are not ready to thoroughly learn theories instead of memorizing terms you will do horrible in this class. I felt like i spent more time trying to change my study habits than actually learning about blaw. disappointing class.
Honestly the most intresting useful lectures ever. He's so amazing honestly best prof ever. I wish I could take ever class with this guy. His lectures are real life examples and as long as you attend every class you'll do fine on his exams. His class was my highlight of the day and honestly didn't want to miss a single class. Highly recommend Doug
No doubt that Dougy P knows his stuff. Very hard exams though
super interesting lectures, definitely learned a lot! but his exams are brutal! if you don't know the textbook and lectures inside and out don't expect a good grade.
The best prof I've ever had. Everything you need for exams is in his online notes or in the textbook. I only went to lectures because I wanted to. Exams are pretty easy. Little memorization is needed and if you have any reasoning ability whatsoever you should get an A without much effort.
Doug is so awesome! His lectures are amazing even though they are not necessary. Everything you need to know is in the text or notes. But he gives wonderful examples and encourages the class to participate in hypothetical scenarios. He may come off as a bit arrogant but hey, he's a lawyer. Intelligent. Witty. Learned a lot from this class!
Fantastic professor. Peterson can take a dry textbook and squeeze out a glass of fine wine. He has much to share through his life stories, and his a teaching style is phenominal. I found myself talking about his lectures on multiple occasions outside of class. You must work hard to do well, but it is definitely worth it.
Douggie clearly enjoys this class above all others he teaches. His lectures have little to do with the textbook and what will be on exams. However, his lectures are something much more important - business and life lessons. He bestows upon you invaluable information in each lecture. Attend for your own good. Not for your grade's good.
B LAW 442 International Law. It's about GATT, WTO, Law of Armed Conflict, Treaties, etc. etc. He does not enjoy this class compared to his others and it's easy to see why. The slides are not from the textbook publisher so they are a little more jumbled. Overall pretty hard class. Lots of reading.
Great professor, everything needed was given in textbook, had notes he put online to summarize it. But his lectures were amazing and explained everything. Had him for 8am on tues, thurs, and yet he'd keep full attention.
Great prof! Loved going to Douggie P's class, tests are a little hard but not to bad if you do all your readings with the PPT notes beside you and go over end of chapter questions. Overall, awesome lecturer, was a little sluggish with email responses however.
Great lecturer. Although really, his lectures are not related to the text or exams, he is a really great person to listen to. He teaches you the real world stuff. Exams are fairly hard and he's quite the stickler for giving marks or even letting you see your exam. Do all the chapter readings!
Best part of this class is not having to go. Second best part of this class is the curve. Exams are harder (and more subjective) than you think they'll be, but read the book, understand some concepts and you'll 4.0 it based on the low averages. Workload light. Not cumulative. Instructor overrated and pompous, but still a good lecturer.
Dont go to class. Just read the book before exams. not cumulative. Averages are low so dont stress. the curve helps everyone. Good stories if you go to class tho. entertaining fellow.
Int'l Law. Quite dry and boring. He doesn't talk much about the exact material in class. Talks more about real world business life, lessons and tips. Invaluable lecture to attend, not for your grade, but for your career and future success. The best lecturer at the U of A.
Difficult course. Most people have said read the textbook and you will be fine. This is true - you do need to read the textbook. However, Peterson throws curve ball questions on his exams that no matter how hard you studied, you might not have a clue. That said, leverage the strength of the curve and you should do well. Nice guy, arrogant though!
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken, BLAW 444 would be the other hardest class. He's so awesome, his stories are great and keep you interested even when the subject matter can be dull. He's a little arrogant but that makes him that much sexier.
Material in class is pretty decent, exams are tough but the curve helps. Attendance is not mandatory but you will get more real world knowledge from 1 of Dougy's classes than an entire semester of any other classes. Go to class for your future, not for your grade.
This instructor is quite good. He is very learned, he makes a concerted effort to get students to understand the material, and he has a great sense of humour. However, he does supplement his lectures with a great deal of gendered generalizations - a habit which may alienate some students.
Great sense of humour. Extraordinary teaching skills.
A fun guy but some people may think of his teaching coming off as a bit arrogant. For me however a pretty good prof. The lecture attendance is not mandatory but they help understand the concepts a bit better. Its better than reading the textbook for the course.Pretty hard exams but the curve helps. (60 percent avg)
Class attendance is a definite must! He tends to get side tracked a lot though so make sure you read the text. Some exam questions are tricky but the average is usually pretty low. He is very helpful if you have any questions.
Loved him! He was very interesting and had lots of interesting stories that helped illustrate what he was trying to teach. Some people will say he comes off arrogant, which he sort of does, but he's a lawyer. Make sure to read the textbook though - he always has one question based on the footnotes of the textbook.
His lectures are phenomenal. I was never bored and he's hilarious. He explains all the concepts VERY well. He follows the book so it's very easy to follow along. Also, he's sexy. Too bad he's not in my age group. I'd tap that.
Great Prof. Really knows his stuff. One midterm and one final. Going to class not essential b/c he does use the textbook, but his lectures are extremely interesting and you learn a lot by just sitting and listening.
50% midterm and final, non cumulative. Textbook reading essential. class average ~60% which is a B+. M/C and T/F question only. It has been said a million times, best prof in business and more useful info in 1 class than anything in any other business class you will take in university. attendance not mandatory
Good prof, keeps it real, exams have low averages but curve helps you out. Good stories and interesting lectures.
Without question one of my favourite professors at the uofa. Interesting lectures, lends a lot of perspective. Very candid, even brutally honest at times, but has your best interest in mind. Gives you practical, applicable knowledge in addition to giving you a good sense of what doing business in the real world is like.
I was very disappointed with this class. This prof is overrated. There are tons of people with real world experience, he is not the only one. Spends most of the time talking about his days working here and there. His opinions are very narrow-minded. Exams are hard and subjective. The FOB needs to hire fresh, innovative and diverse profs.
Dougy P is like Dr. House except a lawyer. Totally awesome course and a very interesting lecturer. Went to every single 8am lecture which is unusual for me.
Interesting anecdotes, but sometimes overly opinionated. Exams are MC and T/F only and completely based on textbook content. Exams questions get more difficult from one exam to the next and averages drop. Curved and average in the 60s, so easy A with minimal relative coursework (just two midterms and a final, non-cumulative and 4 chapters each).
I never did Business Law before taking this class, so it was a lot to take in at first, but the work is totally worth it. Peterson is the best professor I've had in all of my years at University. And to sum up in three words - I love him.
B LAW 301 requires a lot of memories. Douglas is a very knowledgeable professor. Many real and interesting stories.
Dougy P is a fun prof - definitely knows his stuff. Tests are difficult, but the curve is nice and low.
PPT slides are of low quality with little detail for the first half of the course. Just lists terms with no definitions or explanation for first few topics. On exam, some questions were intentionally designed to trick students or were questions which are subjective, ambiguous, or even test specific content not in the textbook or lecture.
Useful and impressive life lessonsif one just finished highschool and is graduating university without having a real job first. Very anti-government and pro off-shore tax evasion. Exams easier than 301 due to large number of truefalse, but still a few trickyambiguousunclear questions to be found. Exam not reviewed nor shown in class.
The hardest midterm you will ever write! Some questions designed to trick students with multiple combinations of answers or unclear wording. Others are intentional trick questions. Lots of truefalse which is easier. About half the content is from what he says in class or details on the slides, not the textbook. Midterm feels like the LSAT.
If you are going to school to actually learn useful information and not just get a piece of paper at the end of it, take any of the classes this prof teaches. He provides entertaining examples that almost always relate to the course material, and when they don't, they will be useful life lessons.
Dougy P is an amazing prof, with lots to offer in his classes. However the exams are really difficult. 50% midterm, 50% final. Get about a 60 and you'll pull off a B+ with the curve. Do not need to attend lectures to do well, exams are based out of the book. Would defintely recommend !
Doug is the best professor at the UofA by a long shot. He is incredibly intelligent and presents his lectures in an interesting and engaging way, and is very helpful. Only 2 exams, they're tricky, but fair. All in all, A+++ prof. On a side note- he's extremely attractive, another huge incentive to attend class :)
Doug is an awesome professor. If you're looking to get more out of your degree and actually learn and apply concepts from class, take this class. His midterm was very hard, you must read and understand the textbook really well. Final exam was a notch easier. I recommend taking this class.
Pros: Awesome prof! Interesting stories and not bad on the eyes :) Attendance is NOT mandatory, you can get an A just by reading the slidestexts & understanding the concepts. Only 2 exams & both are MC format (and the questions are entertain Cons: Some of the questions on exams are tricky & ambiguous, but other than that, I recommend this prof!
Be ready to read and re-read the test questions as they are tricky and the exams can be tough. His class will normally have a low average and he curves it nicely (I had a low 70 which got me an A-). Class is helpful for clarification and interesting but not mandatory, I missed a bunch of them and as long as you read the text you should be good.
Sexy.
Just a note for students saying his exams are tricky or tough. The exams are very basic in content, non-cumulative, have lots of true-false on top of the multiple choice, and are almost exclusively based on textbook content. The exams are easy, and even easier to do well in the class since it is curved to about a 60ish average.
Douglas Peterson is a LEGEND! Hes the best prof you will ever have! Great stories and interesting anecdotes during class time. Pretty funny guy so lectures are not dull. In Business he teaches: B LAW 301, B LAW 422, B LAW 442, and B LAW 444. Easy classes due to non-cumulative multiple choice only exams and easy curve with a 60ish average.
If you can ignore the arrogance and sexism, he's not terrible... He knows the law, but other than his random stories, everything he says is from the textbook, so is he definitely overrated. 50% midterm and 50% final.
Dougie P is by far the best prof you will ever have. Took a mandatory blaw 301 course for my degree with him and completely switched my major to Blaw just to take more classes with him. Tip to succeed in his class is to take note of everything he says or record his lectures. Low average so just beat the average (usually 55-65%) and you will do well
As others have said, his exams are tough. They're meant to be. Legal material and understanding also being being very careful with wording. His exams test your critical thinking. Great (imo) if you're considering a JD. His lectures, are always engaging. Subjective yes, but he speaks from his experience. If you want neutrality, just read the text.
Honestly this is the second semester I've had Doug P, and his arrogance just shot through the roof. His examples given in class frankly are not relevant to the course, and his "truth"s are just annoying to hear over and over again.
The best best prof I have ever had! Dougy P gives the most engaging and interesting lectures of any prof in the school of business and uses his real world experiences to teach real world knowledge. Two exams worth 50% each arent hard if you read the book and listen in class. Highly recommend taking his class if you ever get a chance to do so
Doug Peterson's examples in class were not relevant to the exams. The midterm averages were incredibly low for a 50% midterm and he didn't even bother commenting on them or asking for feedback of why the class did so poorly. Does not seem to care if people understand the concepts. Didn't even show up to the midterm or final.
Spends the few classes he actually shows up to going off on irrelevant tangents that are not based on fact and are not on the tests. Much of the course material is covered in other courses, so if you have taken BLaw 402, you already know most of the content in this course as well. Dont take it unless you want to hear Doug brag about his life
This guy cuts+pastes a diff tbook into a new tbook "written" by him which he sells you. All exam questions r from the tbook he cuts+pastes from. If you find and study that tbook youll get an ez 4 if not the exam questions will make no sense. I figured out only for final lazy prof but hey thanks for free grades. Useless/interesting lectures though
Doug is the best proffesor in the school of business. The amount of knowledge he has from his years of experience will help you outside the classroom as well, learning things it would take years to experience. Take great notes, read the textbook, and broaden your knowledge with outside sources to do well. Best proffesor Ive ever had.
Have taken four classes with Doug already, probably my favourite prof at the Alberta School of Business. Really knowledgable of the law & how it operates. Makes difficult concepts easier to understand by putting them in real-world contexts. His exams are pretty hard but if you know the material you just need to apply if and you are good to go!
Spends the entire class going off on tangents about irrelevant topics, and brags about his life. Class averages have historically been very low. Response: it be like that sometimes. Doesn't post any grade distribution so you don't know where you stand till you get your final grade back.
Doug is a hilarious prof and gives real-life examples for concepts. Grade is based on 2 midterms and final (non-cumulative). He gives the impression of being cut-throat ("If you do poor, you do poor. That's life" type of person). Tests are very challenging so a lot of studying is needed to prepare. Would take him again though.
His class is basically about him talking about his life expereinces in Canada/US/Barbados/Japan all the time. The class average is super low in terms of percentage but he curves it.
Dougy P is hands down my fav prof ever. His lectures are really interesting and he touches on lots of things briefly that aren't in the textbook but do show up on the exam so write down everything he says! Exams are tough, make sure you understand the material thoroughly and can apply your knowledge! Wording is super important too so read carefully
Doug is not a good prof if you are looking for fair exams. His midterm and final are difficult because they test on arbitrary topics that often aren't included in the material. Average is low and is curved, which helps, but leaves a lot of ambiguity about what grade you will receive at the end of the course. Overall would not recommend.
Bad prof! Not accessible outside class. Exams are tricky and difficult. Does not put effort in to help understand material. Dont take a class with him
His exam questions are hard/confusing although all MC & T&F. The notes and textbook didn't help. (basically the same content, book has the cases but some are also talked abt in lectures) I would never recommend his class to anyone. would def bring GPA down but he would still pass you. (read his syllabus abt that) i took this during spring
His lectures are very entertaining and worth going to just for the life lessons. Not an easy A. However, if your interested in actually enjoying a class plus getting value for your tuition you should take this! To study, memorize the powerpoint slides AND THEN read the textbook + write down what you missed.
Dougy P is a straight up G. Can't you see? Lectures were genuinely Very interesting for me. Make sure you thoroughly read the questions on the exam. He goes at an incredible speed and your mark will leave you like, "DAMN".
Lectures are entertaining but the tests are somewhat unfair. Not sure where he gets his questions from but they often seem subjective and have multiple possible answers. Some don't relate directly to what we learned. Midterm average was 55% and highest grade was 65%. Course is good except for tests which can easily screw your GPA.
The test questions are confusing, they have multiple right answers. The teaching was fun but the testing was awful.
Absolutely would not recommend this prof. He would frequently make uncomfortable comments and conducted himself in a way that was obnoxious and condescending if you did not agree with what he was saying. Honestly, I stopped showing up after the first midterm and just used the textbook to study- and did better because of it. Worst prof Ive had.
Doug is an interesting guy, but his lectures are filled with stories rather than clear examples. He often talks around his point without making it, leaving you to fill in the blanks. Warning- this class is HARD. 50% midterm, 50% final. Luckily he curves the class- the average was 58%. Don't take if you're looking for an easy option.
He is a such a funny prof and his lectures are very enjoyable. I didn't buy the textbook, just went to class and studied the lecture slides. Read the questions very carefully because they can be tricky but all in all, the exam questions are mostly common sense so it's not terrible.
Great professor, funny and knowledgeable. Super interesting class. Test are hard and confusing though. I read the whole textbook but the testing was still a lot harder and there were some things on it that I just hadnt seen before or that I felt had more than one correct answer. I had 66%, and still got A.
Doug P is the best prof I've ever had. Tells it like it is and some people can't handle that so as long as you're not hung up on being politically correct all the time you'll be fine. Exams are hard but he curves the class to make it as fair as possible. Also teaches you things that are actually relevant to real life, not just facts on an exam
Doug Peterson is a real gem. A rare breed of professor who actually teaches you the theory and real life application. He has great examples for every topic almost, and will go into detail to make sure you understand how it work.
STAY CLEAR.
While you can tell Doug is passionate about what he teaches, his tests are brutal. I really wanted to like Doug as he engaged with content really well and constantly threw in some great real world examples, however the exams were just out of this world awful. I would probably choose another prof over Doug in the future.
Great lecturer but exams are tough; he teaches everything you need to know but applying the concepts to certain situations can be difficult. However, since exams are difficult, you can get a good mark if you understand concepts rather than just memorize definitions (class average was 61 so a 75 got me an A).
I really enjoyed this class with Doug, would definitely take another with him. The exams were reasonable but you have to really read the questions. I never purchased the textbook but his lectures were sufficient for studying and a lot of the questions could be answered with common sense and basic, everyday knowledge of law.
his lectures are interesting, but exams are really difficult, there was typos and really confusing wording in the final, and we were limited to less then a minute per question as per his time limit (which was shorter then was originally promised via email to the whole class).
good stories relevant to topics discussed, interesting lectures, respects students, explains topics in an efficient manner. 33% midterm, 8 duplicate questions, 37% final with multiple typos. 53min to do 70 q's, i feel justified in expecting a proofread so we don't add confusion to already wordy/difficult questions. notable as exams made up 90%
A lot of people complain that his tests are very difficult (and they are) but I feel like I leave Doug's classes having actually learned something. You definitely have to work for your mark but he curves the course, so I think it's arguably easier to do well in his class as opposed to other blaw profs at ASoB because his averages aren't stupid high
People will say that his averages are extremely low (and they are), but the tests are fair if listen to lectures and make sure to read the assigned text. More importantly, the lectures are engaging and you really learn something from them. Doug provides lots of real-world examples and tells it very much as it is - no mincing words. Solid professor.
His exams are curved but very difficult, averages around 56%. Definitely good to attend classes, he's a good lecturer even online and loves when questions are asked. Almost treats the course as if it were of law school-level. He relates course content to legal work he has done before, so it helps give context to what you're learning.
You can get a pass if you skip classes and memorize the definitions before walking to an exam but you can get an A if you make an effort to understand the concepts. But if you aren't coming to class you're missing out on one of the best profs in this godforesaken province. he uses current events, his past cases, engages students and makesclassfun
I hate it
Good lecturer and classes are extremely interesting, so they're definitely worth attending. I took the class during Spring, and there were 2 exams, midterm and a final, so if you messed up one, it was hard to recover. To do well, read the textbook, listen to his lectures, and read the questions closely. Exams are hard, but he curves generously.
cool guy. do not expect to do well on his exams. the midterm average for BLAW 444 this semester was 48%. I don't think this is indicative of the student's performance or understanding of the material, rather i think it is indicative of his notoriously difficult exams. the class is curved so you probably won't fail.
Had him for spring classes and he does an amazing job of teaching. I've never enjoyed going to any class except for his. If you listen to his examples and are able to apply them in a similar way you should do fine on the tests.
I would not take this class if it wasn't mandatory: difficult exams and textbook is mandatory (you need the textbook code to access the slides he uses in his lectures). But, great lectures, super fun class overall.
I think he has amazing lectures and he makes it so interesting and relevant. He always includes lots of examples. Hardest tests that i've ever written, but as everyone else says the curve saves you.
Doug is an amazing prof. He cares about the content he teaches and does so in a matter that gives an even deeper understanding to his students. The lectures while not required are super engaging and help understanding greatly. 2 midterms and a final which are all difficult but pay attention and you'll do well. Highly recommend!
Great professor, extremely tough exams.
Best professor at the University of Alberta. Peterson made every class interesting, used humour to make lectures feel more enjoyable, and thoroughly explained each topic. Though the grade is solely based on exams (2 midterms & 1 final), he prepared the class exceptionally well. Additionally, he always makes time for his students. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Professor Peterson's BLAW301 class is challenging but engaging. The exams are tough, but he curves generously. Attending lectures and using resources like the textbook and Unstuck study for study prep can really pay off.
He is great talker and makes class interesting by talking through concepts, however the tests in this course are honestly unreasonably hard (averages of ~50%). Nearly every question on his exams is worded confusingly and very differently from how the course is taught. Also, he uses tophat and has no resources outside of the textbook and ppts.
Best professor I've ever had! He's enthusiastic and charismatic, and it truly makes his lectures enjoyable. Would recommend him to every student at the UofA. His tests are hard, and he knows that, but it's obviously curved so it's honestly not a big deal.
Good: Non-cumulative midterms & final, great lectures, good textbook, light work for most of the time, generous curve. Bad: Guy would be gone for a week a few times, exams are quite hard, can sometimes go off-topic and on tangents, you need to write notes during his great lectures or risk missing crucial (exam) information. Overall: Great prof.
Fun lectures, he connects real-life examples with class concepts. The grade is based only on 2 midterms and 1 final, which are all pretty hard. But if you score around the avg, you will get a B/B+. Definitely a course that takes hard work if you wanna do well. You do need to buy the textbooks on TopHat. Notes are not super organized but bearable.
I've done a few classes with Doug now, to be honest I don't attend lectures and only read the textbook. Works wonders for me. The exams are tough but the curve is super generous. Never done badly, and Doug himself is a gem.
Taking two classes with Doug this term (Fall 2025), he is my favourite prof by a long shot. His lectures are worth attending, even though you can still learn the course material without having to go to class. He's got some of the hardest exams you'll write while in uni, but he curves generously. Definitely would recommend him!
Only plus side is that people like his lectures. Downsides - no practice material to prepare for exams - jump around chapters often - barely use canvas - 90cad something for textbook, have 10 practice questions per chap which don't prepare you for exam Won't take again. Its more beneficial to me to study by myself than attend his class.
Lectures were useful for learning the material, but neither lectures nor textbook prepare you whatsoever for the midterm or final. Extremely hard tests worth 50% each which I wasn't a fan of either
Good lectures but really difficult tests
Great lecturer the exams are brutal but they're curved generously
