I loved this class. He is taking classes at CU Boulder as well. Best class of the semester. Simple lectures, yet very engaging. Loved it.
His lectures are very intriguing and entertaining. The tests are tough but if you go to class, it's an easy B.
He was very available to students that needed help. I'm bad at history but as long as you memorize the vocab and make sure you know the significance you will do great. If you don't understand the significance, ask he will tell you exactly what you need to say. He occasionally has writing assignments in class which are like pop quiz paragraphs.
My favorite class. This was probs a tough class for freshman, but after figuring out his teaching style (his lectures are key, you need to know themes), it was a great class and he is always up to help, even an email on the night of an exam would get answered. His tests are essays and key term, so study them and you're fine. text book- don't buy
You don't have to read the textbook but just make sure you actually come to class (he manipulates the notes online vs. notes in class).. To do good on tests just fill out the study guide and you'll be fine, he's rally a good teacher so as long as you put in the work the class requires, you will do fine.
Its a more difficult class but the his lectures are great! Don't worry about the book too much just show up to lecture every time. I didn't do well on my first test but if you put in the work to improve on the next tests he notices and will help you improve and boost your score.
Douglas Sheflin is my favorite professor at CSU. He is passionate about what he teaches, and makes boring material interesting. There is no need to read the textbook, but it is important you go to class because part of his lectures are more audio based than in the power points he posts online. Take notes on everything, helps you out on test essays.
Amazing teacher, Professor Sheflin is the best teacher I have had at CSU. He is kind, well prepared and cares not only about the class but the kids too. its important that you go to class and if you just do that he will notice and you will be rewarded for sure. Enjoy a class for once and take it with Sheflin
Took AH since 1865 online with Sheflin and he was awesome. He is straight forward about what needs to be on the exams and his lectures were short and sweet. Cant say anything about his teaching in person but if youre looking to take online, definitely take with Sheflin!
One of those professors who has specific needs on his paper. It's not about how goof your paper is it's about how much he liked it. Once you meet that requirement your fine with the rest of the course. Content is very interesting and i got what i wanted out of this course
Sheflin is awesome. He doesn't load you up with tons of homework (though if you don't take what he does give you seriously, then you're screwed) and he is always there to help and give feedback. Of all the Professors at CSU his classroom has had the highest atmosphere of respect I've seen, don't skip class, you'll miss out.
Exceptionally knowledgeable and more than willing to work outside of class with every student who seeks help. Keep up with the reading and get engaged in class. If you don't know what is expected of you, re-read the syllabus and ask him. Very approachable and understanding, as long as you put in the work
You have to work for your grade but it's a fun class and everyone wants to work for the grade. He is available to talk whenever you need it and grades on improvement. Many students who didn't do well on the first exam improved significantly on the second and third. I loved this class.
He teaches everything unbiasedly and in a way that gives you an idea of the big picture surrounding an event. He teaches the facts and has a talent for making it interesting as well. He is a tough grader though. His tests are a lot of writing, and he also assigns a few papers too. Note: he just wants info dumps of facts in good quality writing.
One of my favorite professors in the history department. Great guy, good class, and always helpful.
I had Dr. Sheflin my first semester at CSU and I wish all my professors could be like him. It was clear that he was more interested in the big picture, the "why" of U.S History instead of just glossing over with a bunch of facts. He does 3 tests throughout the semester, which isn't bad but they are all written. You have been warned
Very knowledgeable and always helpful. He has 3 handwritten test throughout the semester but as long as you know the terms and material you will do fine. There are 4 papers and he expects you to analyze the history, not just give facts. You can tell he really loves teaching history and will always help you when you need it.
Cannot recommend this prof enough. He is hands down one of the best teachers/profs I've had in my entire education experience. He cares so much about the material he teaches, and does an amazing job at connecting American history to the big picture, as well as to what's happening in the world today. Sheflin is THE BEST.
Professor Sheflin was amazing all semester. Most passionate professor i've ever had. Cares about the material and the class. He is a tough grader on content, more than structure. 4 papers 3 written exams. Best Professor I've ever had (70+ Credits)
Dr. Sheflin is a Really great professor! His class was very writing and reading heavy: three 5-page papers on the books you read and one final 12-15 page paper, however no exams. He made the content very interesting so it was easy to come to class. Grades fairly but you will have to work for your grade! Highly recommend him!
Great professor. Not too difficult, but not so easy that you don't learn anything. His lectures are consistently interesting.
Sheflin is by far the best professor I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and their well-being, and is incredibly passionate about history. If you have to take a history class, I can't recommend any of Sheflin's classes enough.
Slides are available online, so there's little motivation to ever go to class. Overall, good but strict professor. Tests are paragraph form and there's 4 tests throughout the semester.
Loved this instructor- Lecture was enjoyable to be in and he was always very well prepared. Highly accessible out of class, but grading is tough. Read 3 books- one essay on each of them. 3 exams, and a fourth final essay. Very few other points in the class. Very enjoyable class though, made an AUCC enjoyable.
HES AWESOME and got a dry sense of humour.
He definitely cares about history and wants you to understand the material well. There is just A LOT of work. There is no textbook but you have to write 3 different book reports. Only two tests, but they are essay/short answer format. He gives good feedback on both test and paper which is helpful. The class was interesting and would take again.
Awesome Professor, clearly lays down the rules and gives you honest feedback and openly admits when he doesn't know the answers. Highly Recommend because of his knowledge, his demeanor, and his feedback.
Dr. Sheflin is probably the best professor I've had yet at CSU. The class itself is a lot of work. We are required to read three books (each around 300-400 pages), write four 5-page papers, and create a website. However, despite this, I don't regret taking this class at all. Dr. Sheflin is an extraordinary lecturer and can make anyone love history.
Doug is chill, and I would highly recommend him for any class. He is very relaxed, and always willing to help. Go to the lectures (full of info )if you don't go you won't pass. The papers and essays require some time so don't procrastinate and send your thesis to him because he'll help you out. Show improvement and he'll bump up your grade!
Doug is such an incredible and caring person. Due to personal reasons, I had to reschedule my final, and he was more than willing to work with me. Your grade is mainly based on four papers and three blue book exams, so get ready to write. There are three books you read over the semester. This class isn't an easy A, but Doug is great!!
Took HIST150 Fall 2019. Enjoyed Prof. Sheflin a lot. Lectures done through PowerPoint, no textbook but have to read 3 other books for papers. Exams were a bit tough, studying is required to get a good grade. He provides good study guides and feedback.
I took his online class during the pandemic and he does a good job of explaining things chronologically and in a way that makes sense. The exams are pretty easy because they're take home exams and you can use the lectures and book to complete the exam (it is not multiple choice though). He seems like a good, caring guy!
I've taken 2 classes with him, one at the beginning of the pandemic. He does everything he can to make sure everyone is dialed in and okay with the material. He does check in with students when they drop off the radar. The papers aren't too hard. It is a good chunk of reading but go to the discussions on the books. They will save you!
Doug is one of the very few teachers I have had who loves his job loves to teach and cares for his students. He will help you with your essays and rewards those who show effort. I am double majoring in CIS and Finance graduating in four years and I still am going to find a way to take one of his history classes again.
Hist 355 is a great & hard, Sheflin makes you work but it's worthwhile. There's an article to read every week, you write an essay on it abt every other week, 3 books are also read that you write essays on. Participation is highly encouraged & graded. Prerecorded lectures. No tests. Final is a researched 10-12 pg paper or 6-8pg paper + website.
The lectures alone last around 1.5 hours. You usually get one lecture & about 50 pages of reading per week with the occasional discussion post or essay. Sheflin grades his writing assignments very hard and he has very specific requirements. His lectures are not engaging at all and he didnt make really any effort to connect with his students
Doug is a fun professor to have just because he has a good personality and he can make boring subjects more engaging. He assigns a lot of reading and expects you to participate, but if you keep on top of work and try to contribute to class you should do alright.
If you read any other comment on this forum from the Spring Semester 2021, please note, I was in a massive group chat with all of them and they all refused to do the lectures and papers until the last minute. This is a 300-400 level course, it isn't going to be an easy pass YOU HAVE TO WORK "Professor didn't try to connect", online class COVID, yea
Very passionate about history. Although his lectures would last between 1-1.5 hours per week, I enjoyed them as he made history bearable and understandable and why it is so important to know. I learned a lot about US history after 1865 from him and I would highly recommend him if you don't mind putting in a little effort and actually learning.
Sheflin is a great guy with a lot of depth, a lot of passion, and a lot of enthusiasm for his students. He consistently checks up on his students. I had to take his seminar because no other class would fit, and even though I hated the reading, I loved his lectures. Great dude.
He's a great lecturer and made me care about boring parts of history. The most important thing is showing up to lectures, but doing the required reading is also important. It's clear he wants everyone to pass and he's willing to read over drafts and give feedback, but the grades aren't easy. Not impossible either, but it requires some real effort.
Doug facilitated great conversation during book discussions. He takes time with his comments on your papers, and he is willing to look at them even before the due date so that you can fix things for a higher grade. Hes a nice guy who likes to joke around, and he often laughed at my jokes. I would 100% recommend taking this class.
Professor Sheflin is a really nice guy and the class was mostly lectures but he is passionate and knowledgeable about the content so he makes it pretty interesting to listen to. There were a few essays but he wants them between 750-1000 words so they're not bad. If you need to take a history class, Sheflin is a pretty good choice.
Sheflin was my favorite prof this semester, hands down. He led great lectures and really let the class have control of the floor. There is a LOT of reading , but he does make it quite interesting nonetheless. Lots of care for students' wellbeing, very approachable. Grades work pretty quickly with good feedback. Take his course!!
Doug is one of the best professors you can have in the history department. He is very engaged in the content&will answer any of your questions open-endendly. Make sure you show up to every class and participate every once in a while, it will greatly help to understand the material and prepare your papers.
Very down to earth and relatable. He is willing to help with every assignment.
Solid honors seminar prof. Knows what he's talking about, and is passionate abt the material. Will assign 100 pages a week, but its expected that you skimmed it, rather than memorized it. Workload is reasonable for 3 credits (3 smallish? papers, a speech, and a final research paper).
Assigned lots of books to read, but absolutely my favorite professor to date. He's hilarious and kind and really good at working with you to improve essay scores.
I loved Dr. Sheflin, as a professor, he is very understanding, and his lectures are really interesting. It is a hard class to take early in the morning though. You have to read three full length books in this course and write three papers on them which is difficult and time consuming. The exams are short answers and essays no multiple choice
Dr. Sheflin has become one of my favorite professors! His lectures are to the point he makes sure everyone is on the same page. He is accessible outside of class, especially before an exam or paper. Dr. Sheflin was enthusiastic about his content and knew what he was talking about. The class has 3 papers on books, so make sure you time manage well
Professor Sheflin is the best professor that I have had. Once you take one class with him you will want to take them all. He is incredible and gives a wonderful perspective on U.S. history.
This class is pretty tough for an intro level class but he is also accessible outside of class. It is important to get him to read your thesis or part of your paper before it is due because his feedback is helpful. Going to lecture is very important because his exam questions come from it and he will not have all the details on the slides.
Dr. Sheflin is super personable and knowledgeable in his field. I respect him as a grader and enjoy his lectures. I think where he really shines is in discussion-heavy courses, he's a great facilitator.
I do not feel the online class is structured in a way that is successful for distance learners. This course felt like a copy-paste from an in-person course which I felt did not support online learners whatsoever. I went from a high 90 to a 69 after 1st exam. Perhaps he's wonderful in person, though I'd pass an online course with this professor.
He's just a really down to earth teacher that actually cares alot about his students. You'll learn a lot in his class and just do the readings and prepare for the essays. Highly recommend
Such a fun guy and feels like you're actually learning something with how passionate he is. Lectures don't feel long and everything he tells you is important for exams and papers.
Professor Sheflin was awesome and cared about everyone in the class. He was flexible and understanding and offered a lot of outside help if you reached out. To do well in the class, just keep up with the readings, contribute to the discussion as much as possible, and get feedback on your essays before turning them in!
Dr. Sheflin is easily my favorite professor at CSU. He's entertaining to talk to and listen to, which makes the material very interesting. His classes are lecture-heavy rather than discussion-heavy. In UD courses, the prompts for his final papers are often very vague but there are benchmarks throughout the semester to keep on track.
AMAZING if you're into history! Sheflin was entertaining and loved when I would ask questions regarding the material. I felt we were well prepared for the midterm and all exams. I would highly recommend this professor and I look forward to adding another one of his classes to my future schedule.
Professor Sheflin is a passionate teacher that is very knowledgeable about history. His lectures are interesting and he doesn't just read off the slides. The lecture is very fast paced and the slides don't have a lot of information on them which means you have to come to class to take good notes. There isn't any extra reading and 5 discussion boards
Doug is a great professor, by far the best I've had in the history department. His lectures are passionate and engaging and there are frequent discussions. There are 4 papers, 3 books, and some other writing assignments but it is well worth it for the fun, entertaining classes. Doug also explains things well and I learned a lot.
im a pretty good student and do great work, but oh my god was his grading so hard. I never got an A and his comments on your papers are so vague and can come off as insulting. I never had such a tough grader and is very hard to please with your writing. Granted I took his online class, but just keep this in mind.
Idk. I didn't really like him. He failed me because he believed that I cheated on the final, I WASN'T EVEN IN THE STATES.
He is an amazing professor. His lectures are enjoyable and engaging. He is an incredibly tough grader, but you can send him a draft of your paper and get feedback, which is helpful. He cares about his students and wants you to leave the class having learned something. Attendance isn't mandatory but going will help you get a better grade.
Probably my favorite history class ever just because of Sheflin. He's funny and is willing to work with you to get caught up. Participation is a part of our grade, but showing up consistently and talking every now and then is good. I loved him and recommend. There is a lot of reading, but its history and he explains it all well.
While I took his course online, the grading was very tough. For a History class, papers were graded as though you are in an upper level, writing composition class. Feedback was very vague and professor sent out announcements through the semester that were contradictory to each other. I would not recommend his online course.
Dr. Sheflin is a great teacher but he grades as if it were an upper-level history class instead of 100-level. I did not do well on any of the papers because the questions were very vague, and I was often confused on what he wanted because many of the things he told us for the tests and essays contradicted themselves.
Good lecturuer and person. Wou
Prof Sheflin was wonderful! The class is strictly lecture-based but he does well at keeping them interesting by adding in jokes. 3 book reports throughout the semester were probably the most challenging part. The 2 take-home exams were easy. Attendance isn't required but I would recommend going as the slides themselves are a little blank.
Dr. Sheflin clearly cares about the success of his students. There are a lot of essays and three separate books so if you are not a fan of essays, like myself, this may not be the class for you. That being said Dr. Sheflin will give you all of the infromation (and more) nessecary for the exams, essays, and your success in the class.
Sheflin was an amazing professor. He's very understanding, and respectful. He encourages students to reach out to him with questions, and goes above and beyond to provide adequate help for his students. This class has a good/somewhat light workload with only 2 exams, 3 books to read and write a paper about, and reviews for exams and the papers.
Dr. Sheflin was great at lecturing but the class was tough at times. Work load is not too bad but he is harder on grading. You can always send in your drafts that you write which helps and he cares about his students. Attendance is not mandatory but it will help you in the future if you show up. Overall though I would recommend this class!
Great teacher, hard grader.
Best professor ive ever had lectures are genuinely interesting and i dont really like school at all if youre looking for an fairly easy class for credit this is the prof for it
Ridiculously difficult professor. Not flexible and was insane on grading papers, could never get higher than a B even though I went to office hours, spent hours writing them, and got help. Lectures were okay, he is passive aggressive.
He Is Amazing and cool.
When I say "Accessible Outside Class", don't think he'll treat you with any value of respect. I think Professor Sheflin is a great teacher, but he is not very respectable and challenges you outside of the classroom. Met him for office hours to clear something up and instead of fixing the problem, he made it worse. Big ego and very unprofessional.
This dude is the GOAT. Don't listen to people talking about how mean or passive aggressive he is. He's a great teacher and the classes are actually really interesting. Exams are tough but a reasonable tough. Do your studying and you'll be fine. DEFINITELY attend every lecture though. You probably won't pass if you don't. Attend if you hate Brits.
Sheflin can seem a bit intense for sure but he's a good guy. tough grader but as long as you treat this as a real class (not a throwaway AUCC for an easy A) you're gonna do fine. there's not a lot of HW so when there is put effort in and you'll be fine. Really interesting material. Also essays sneak up on you so stay ahead on reading
Doug is fine. He is kind of aggressive and strict and he had a few times where he got really mad at the class. you have to read 3 books and write an essay for each. there's a handful of discussion boards and 2 exams but they aren't the most difficult thing in the world. attendance was not taken but you should really go to class.
He has been the best professor I have had at CSU, very accessible and willing to help students. Go to class, and GO TO OFFICE HOURS he will help you he does not care how many times you come in for one assignment. You don't like history? well this class may change your mind in the end, lectures are super engaging.
Good professor but class was pretty hard. No fun but okay for the credit. Kind what I expected
Sheflin is great. He's kind, understanding, and open to feedback/negotiating with students. His class is like any other honors seminar in terms of course load, really not bad. He will proofread your paper before submitting and make comments if you would like which was really helpful. And you don't need to have prior history knowledge to succeed!
Sheflin is great but tough. Participate, go to office hours, and advocate for yourself. The average on most assignments was 77%, with highs around 90% and we were trying so hard. Everything is heavily weighted, so it's stressful. It's a challenging and interesting class—don't expect to breeze through, even as a 4.0 student like I did.
Professor Sheflin was amazing this semester. The class was very lecture-heavy, so if you aren't in class, you need to get the notes from someone who was. The lectures are very comprehensive, and if you make it a point to try your best to be in class, you will do great. He is very kind, understanding, and hilarious. I would recommend this class.
Amazing teacher he loves what he teaches and you can tell, his lectures are really informative and he goes over the material in depth. He's a hard grader when it comes to essays especially, by if you pay attention to what he teaches and read all the books you'll be fine.
Lots and lots of lectures. Almost no homeworks other than an occasional quick discussion board. Way to harsh of a grader on a survey 100 level course. When you can't really go in depth on topics the amount we should, then you shouldn't expect students to take that much away from the course. Also 5 essays for a survey level course... Seriously?
Awesome guy, fun lectures that really engage you in the content!
The lectures are good and very understandably but the course load is a lot. There are 4 or 5 papers throughout the semester and grading is harsh. Same thing applies to exams as its more short answer but still graded harshly. I would show up to class and office hours and advocate for yourself as this is not a class you can breeze through.
Professor Sheflin is great. He's super chill and a super nice guy. The class is very writing heavy, but in my opinion the work load is definitely doable.
Amazing prof. There were 3 books you had to read which your exams (papers) were based on. Only 2 questions each exam, one question being an essay/paper about a question pertaining to the book. Lectures are important to attend, lots of exam/quiz answers given in class. Prof. was always willing to help students improve, he cares sm about his students
Great guy, lectures were very engaging. Had to read a few books for the class but it was not very bad.
Lectures are engaging and well organized. You have to read a few books and write papers on them but all the readings felt very relevant to the content. He's awesome overall highly reccomend
Dr. Sheflin is a fantastic history teacher. For 355 although it isn't mandatory show up and participate, it makes the essays a lot easier. Get ready to write and read, and it can be challenging, but it's worth it/
Every single class is a lecture so it can get boring but he's a funny fella.
