Great class, Dr. Sims was fun, energetic and helpful with questions. He was also very funny and kept the class laughing from time to time. I would take another class from Dr. Sims in the future.
He is a super funny and helpful professor. His test is kinda hard.
Very funny teacher, really easy to understand, and his class is really easy as long as you somewhat pay attention. You also get no assignments in this class.
Dr. Sims is actually a good teacher. Currently taking his class. I would recommend taking his class, then again I would also recommend studying. The exams are pretty tough but NOT complicated. Multiple?! I love that you do not need to worry if you miss a class. He sends ALL lectures to you. Just study and you'll be fine! Easy A if you ask me!
I really enjoyed Professor Sims's class! He made the material interesting, but take good notes and stay on top of your studying for the test. I would recommend his class to anyone!
Great class, wonderful teacher. I would recommend his class however, you have to read the book, take notes meaning come to class, and finally, pay attention.
Dr Sims is one of the best professors ever. No homework, no attendance, or final. He is very clear about the material in the class, and one of the nicest guys there. Finally there is someone who knows how to teach a class.
Dr. Sims was an incredible teacher and genuinely cared about every student. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to meet such a great person. Great personality and sense of humor. Tests are fairly easy if you read the book and take notes. Attendance is not mandatory. He motivated me very much and gave me a lot of hope.
Awesome professor! Dr. Sims spells everything out crystal clear throughout the semester. If you fail an exam (which are where your grades come from) it is because you didn't study his slides, or the text. Thats it! Power points and reading text and you pass. He always cracks jokes (some funnier than others) but keeps the class interesting. Take him
Need the book. His lectures dont reflect the book at all so you have to read and teach your self on your own time. On his test it will have book and lecture questions. it pretty hard because if you dont understand the book he wont go over it. no assignments just test. take someone else.
Awesome professor! Teaches objectively, knows his stuff, and is funny. Also, Professor Sims is fair! You must pay attention and study (welcome to college)! All around great guy. Would gladly take any class he offers!
Very hard course. If you love to study and memorize a whole load of notes then take him. He's a great guy, but hard. First 2 exams are the toughest! When he saw his whole class failing he gave extra credit. Took course with 3 friends and did study sessions, but studied without knowing what to expect. If you're absent prof doesn't give notes to you!
Very understanding. Just make sure to study but overall an amazing teacher. I'd take him again. :)
Funny guy. Take notes everyday. No Homework or assignments. 5 tests. First couple are hard & cover lots of material. Other tests are easy!! In beginning of semester everyone basically fails til middle. Attendance mandatory. Gives an extra cred assignment. Good overall! Just study notes and textbook.
Professor Sims is full of information. He is very interesting and shares many of his experiences with the class. Read the book to get understand the class. You must go to class to pass the professor's exams. He gives ample chances for extra credit to bring up your grade. A great class to take.
Dr. Sims is an AMAZING! There was never a dull moment in his class. The first two (2) of five (5) exams, were extremely hard. Thankfully I read the book and re-read my notes from his power points. The last three (3) exams were easier. I HIGHLY recommend him! I'll definitely take my next science course with him!
Took his Env 101 class during the summer '14. Very 'fun' class. His tests are super easy if you study his lectures and READ the book. He's a number type of guy so i would recommend to study percentages and dates... Highly recommend this teacher!!!!
LOVED this professor. Such a funny and interesting guy. Really smart and into his field, made me consider switching to a science major. Lectures were always interesting and I actually wanted to come to class. This guy really cares about his students. Learned a lot in this class and wish I could take it again. Just study lectures for test!
dr. sims is the homie!!! come to class to pass.
Dr. Sims is a no-nonsense kind of professor. Read the chapters, take good notes, and make sure you understand key concepts. Tests were organized and reflected the chapters and notes. He's a good guy and he cares about his students. Lectures are fun. Do the work, folks.
Dr. Sims is an excellent professor who understands the material.
Cryptic syllabus, he's not helpful at all. I read the syllabus back and forth many times. When I asked him, he'd reply with "read the syllabus, answer is there". Looks like syllabus hasn't been updated in years, he used the same syllabus from the 15 week course for mine (8 week intensive), with all wrong dates. Super expensive book, barely used it.
Dr. Sims is a good instructor. Lectures are in-depth and he stresses the importance of good note taking skills. He has clear grading criteria; everything you need to know is in the syllabus. Students are always aware of changes made to the syllabus (assuming they even show up to class). He is a smart and nice man. I'm thinking about taking ENV!
Great professor. He's a really funny guy. His passion and knowledge about the subject make his lectures fun and interesting. All you have to do is show up, take notes, study the notes, and you will pass the class. I never once read the book and I passed with an A. Would definitely take his class again.
Great professor. Show up to class and you will pass with flying colors! He always makes the class aware of test days and what will be expected. First two exams are considered "hard," but I thought they were simple. Take notes, study, & you will get an A.
He's not very communicative, even when asked questions. But the 50 question tests are all about the powerpoint presentations (didn't use textbook). As long as you download those and read through them, you can pass the tests no problem. There is one extra credit paper. And 10 discussion posts, which are graded as participation, rather than content.
I liked Dr. Sims. I thought he was funny and very intelligent. The class was well structured and he was very clear about what he expected from his students. I would take another class from him again.
Doctor Sims is a well knowledgeable professor with a vast amount of experience. Ex military, with a sense of humor. "He doesn't give F's, you earn them" will come from his mouth and rightfully so. If you are lazy and don't want to do the work please don't take his class. If you are ready to learn and want a professor who will give you 100% take it
No homework or essays, only test. The test are really easy as long as you study his power points beforehand, you don't really need the textbook. Everything on the test will come from his power points, just be mindful that he adds percentage questions on his test, so know those. He came off as grouchy at times, like he didn't want to be in class.
I took his 4 week summer class and I had to study every day few hours to get an A. I liked his sarcastic jokes and the fact he is not a tree hugger. First test was really hard, second one a bit easier then 3 and 4 were easy but the last one was difficult and tricky so be well prepared.
Very nice guy and Great ENV professor. I wish I could take him again.
Absolutely amazing prof! Inspired me to become an env. major! Very straightforward, discusses world events relating to env, quite knowledgeable, etc. 4 4-5 tests, questions are from powerpoints mostly but 10-15 are from the book. Looked forward to class every day. He goes a bit fast on notes sometimes, so I took them on my laptop. Overall, great!
Dr. Sims is a good professor! Im thinking about becoming a science major now
The class is an easy A as long as you take notes and study them. He is a really awesome professor and his class is actually very interesting. I really enjoyed his class!!
I really like Dr. Sims. Im not an science major but he made the subject interesting to me. hes hot too
The professor requires you to buy a CSN specific book but none of the material in the book talks about CSN. His syllabus states what chapters are required for each exam. Right before the exam he sends out an email stating which chapters to read but they never match up with the syllabus. When you ask him about it he is rude. Would not recommend.
Even though his class was tough, he was helpful and funny. If you don't understand something, he breaks it down for you. I would take his class again. If you do study for his test, read the book three times, and do the discussions, you'll pass the class. He is pretty awe some teacher.
He is an awesome teacher. I would definitely take him again.
The class is fairly easy, but your grade might suffer because it is hard to communicate with Dr. Sims. Especially if you are an online student. He is very short and rude. Syllabus sometimes does not match up with exams, he would direct you to chapters to study and the exam would be on a totally different chapter. Did I mention that he is rude?
This guy is amazing lol. Made me happy I picked environmental science as my major. He's very insightful and quite funny. You definitely need to go to class for the lectures or you won't do well. He emphasizes on reading the book but I skimmed it and did well on all my test. But for sure if you need env101 take prof Simms. You won't regret it
5 exams very tough tests does not grade on curve you have 2 days to take make sure you study lectures and powerpoints along with chapters over as most test info in there. Only a few discussions through whole course nothing major. Just be warned tests are tough class average was only 70's. Only homework is studying and reading no assignments.
Great professor. He is a fair man and expects his students to put forth the effort. I would like to take another class from him.
If you are a online student, this professor will make your life miserable. His syllabus will not match up with none of the exams. He would email the students telling you what chapters to study and the exam would be on totally different chapters. I would not recommend this class and do not take online.
As an online student, he came off as rude. I asked for a study guide for our first exam told me,"I do not provide a study guide for the online class." Our whole grade was based off 5 exams and each one was based off about 5 long chapters and 5 powerpoints. I thank google for passing this class.
This class consist of 5 exams and a couple discussions on canvas. Show up to class, take notes, and study before an exam. Simple as that!
Dr. Sims can seem intimidating, but he's actually a pretty good instructor. He doesn't put up powerpoints on Canvas, he wants his students in class to take notes. Most material on exams will be from the textbook some from his power points. He offers a few chances of extra credit, not a lot, but it helps your grade.
Dr. Sims seems tough at first but is actually pretty easy. As long as you study for the test they are fine. There are weekly assignments and 5 test. He has an EC paper in the beginning. He is pretty funny and loves what he does. I plan to take more classes with him.
This professor has to be the worst professor I have ever had through multiple colleges. If you are an online student, you mean absolutely nothing, and he won't help you whatsoever, and is incredibly rude if you try to email him about anything at all. So bad, I'll be going to speak to school officials about him. DO NOT TAKE ONLINE.
Dr. Sims seems like a good professor and I wish I could have taken him in person. He was straight forward about expectations and I really liked learning about the environment. Seems like the complaining is coming from people who expect to be babied in college. Grow up.
I took the Geog 103 class from Dr. Sims. I definitely recommend using the textbook, and going to class and taking notes from his lectures. He really wants to give you an A, but you will have to work for it. There was a mid-term and a final (not accumulative). A few pop quizzes. Weekly class assignments. And very lecture heavy.
Great professor, makes Environmental Science interesting to learn about. Is very accomplished in his field and really knows what he's talking about. Super relatable with students. Can makes some sassy jokes. I really enjoyed his class. Take a lot of notes, 3 quizzes.
I loved this class because he allows you to turn in things you missed. He's hilarious. His lectures are practically ripped from the text. Assignments are text heavy but they're super easy. You have to try hard to fail this class. He wants to help you, he wants to give you a good grade. I wish I could take him for every course.
I would not recommend this professor if you are taking online. The exams don't match up with the assignments. During one of the test, I thought I read the wrong chapters because the test did not align with the chapters. The modules are extremely long, 40- 70 pages & read all materials 3 times.
I loved being in this class every week. This professor is one of the best. I went into this thinking omg this is going to suck and be boring, i was wrong there is rarely a dull moment. While you must earn your grade. This is not an easy A so keep an open mind. He is not a coddler. But you will love and respect his no nonsense yet encouraging ways.
Took this class online. Very clear about what he wants. Sends out email reminding you of test dates. Doesnt give much feedback on discussions but grades them pretty easy. I had to put in the extra work to understand what's on the test because it did not always match up with lectures. Google helped me out a bunch with this class.
Worst online teacher I have ever had. I read the entire textbook and all of the power points there are no lecture notes with 1350 lecture slides. There are many of his test questions that were not part of the curriculum taught. You could answer with info from the book and still get some wrong. I don't get it. I would avoid taking his class online.
This my first time rating a professor. (Usually I'm not prone to do so.) However, I thought I'd give credit where credit is due. Prosser Doug Sims is an amazing teacher who knows his subject. He provides you with a clear view of the environment and your place in it. With the use of your resources and effort, one is sure to pass his class.
Good professor. He lectures, you take notes. If you don't take notes you don't do good. Other than that theirs a test every few weeks over the material he presents on his power points. You have to study or have a photographic memory theirs no slacking in his class that results in an A. Grades on a curve witch is nice.
He's very clear on what he wants. Class isn't hard but you have to work. The first lecture of the week is note taking, the second you do some sort of packet in class then you leave. He's a really nice guy, he's super funny too.
I found Dr. Sims to be an informative and energetic teacher who cares for his students. He provides ample extra credit for his students, if you choose. You must come to class and read the book to earn a good grade. He say's "I do not give grades, I assign them based on your effort." I would take courses from this professor again.
I took GEOG 103 as a required science credit. The professor was wonderful, patient, and vary helpful with work, guidance and patient. Sims was a great teacher and help me relize that science was not that hard when you have a good instructor. I recommend this teacher.
I found this course on environmental pollution to be vary informative and wonderful. He is not an easy grader and would always grade down if he wanted more of an answer. Overall, if you did not put the time into the homework that was open for over 7 days he would hammer you. Put in the time and you'll do great.
Dr. Sims has been one of the most inspirational, competent and respected professors I have ever had. He wants you to do well. He grades on effort and he grades fairly and offers extra credit. The course calendar and work are clearly outlined and very easy to navigate. He always responded quickly when asked for help. More teachers like him needed.
This professor was great and I would recommend him as a professor. He is kind, understanding, patient and the most helpful of any professor I have ever had. He is the best!
This was the second science class I have ever taken, second one with this professor as well. Dr. Sims is a great teacher and very helpful. I would love to take more classes from him in the future.
This was my first online class and it was a ton of work however, as long as you did the work, put forth effort, and the time into your assignments, you will do well. I found this class to be the most helpful when it comes to environmental pollution of any course I have taken at this college.
This class had clear expectation set out in the syllabus buy Dr. Sims. Do the assignments, on time, and you'll do well. I had to really study for the exams however, but it's college so I did what it took to get a good grade. I recommend this teacher highly.
I loved this class, what a teacher. I was an english major but now, I might switch to environmental science.
What a great class and professor. Dr. Sims is clear on expectations and his class syllabus. Exams are from both the book and lectures so you have to come to class.
I loved going to class every day, what a wonderful professor. I had to read, study and really work for my grades but Dr. Sims makes you want to learn. I wish I could take other classes from him.
The first day of the week is lecture with the second day of class being in class work to help you learn the topics. He helps you learn through the in class worksheets and is always available to the class. He is also funny.
His quizzes arent too difficult and are open book/ open notes. He lets you make up assignments and missed quizzes. You have one 3 page paper for the course... not too hard to get done. Overall, great class. I wish all professors were as easy going as he is.
Very responsive and helpful when I didn't understand something. I also enjoyed the lectures and modules, as a lot of them related directly to our Las Vegas environment. It was easier to understand when you could relate to a topic like that. I also enjoyed the assignments as they were ones that really got you thinking about a subject.
The professor does his lectures with a powerpoint so you have to take notes. The grade you get is based off of 4 tests he gives throughout the semester, so make sure you read the chapters that correspond to each test.
Professor Sims is an amazing educator! He truly cares for his students and his lessons are extremely important. If you dont show up for class not read the chapters, you will fail. The class is very easy if you apply yourself and follow the syllabus and Professor Sims directions.
He give great lectures and is very helpful to students on any assignments.
Dr Sims is an good professor. He is straight forward with how he grades and makes his tests. There are lectures typically every class period and they are crucial to getting the top grades on all his assignments but some manage to get by just with the textbook reading.
he is a really good professor he acts like he doesn't care at first but as you go more and more as long as you show up on time every week and listen and answer questions he work pretty well with you
Great professor, really enjoyable class. Awesome lectures. If you apply yourself and study hard You can pass. Pay attention to every lecture, read the textbook and you will pass this class.
This professor is great. He keeps it real. Show up to class and take good notes. If you want extended info then you could buy the book. I never opened the book and did well in the class. His test are literally on his lectures. He is always willing to he sees you are trying.
Long lectures. Study for the exams.
Accessible. Study his modules for tests. Possible to get good grades but you have to work for it.
This Professor was great, his class was structured well with clear criteria for grading and work. He was supper responsive, helpful however, you have to read the book, powerpoints, and do the work to pass.
This was my first online class. Dr. Sims was great, his course was organized, grading was well presented in his syllabus, I did not read the chapters or much of the lectures for the first exam and my grade showed it. I started to read, read, read and review and ended up with a grade of B+ at the end. Great teacher!
Great online class with clear expectation from the teacher. I had to read and study to earn my grade but it wasn't that difficult as long as you do the work.
Wow, what a great class. This was the second class I took with Dr. Sims and I highly recommend him as a teachers. I ready every day, put a great deal of time into my assignments and exams. He is an AWESOME professor. CSN needs more like Dr. Sims
Dr. Sims is the best! He was fun, informative, helpful and always willing to help students. The class is well organized, planned and run.
I took this class as a required science credit and found it to be so fun that I enjoyed going to class. Dr. Sims lectures the first day and then has in-class assignments the second day with an open turn-in policy. He says that he wants us all to pass and provide that environment however, you have to work for your grade.
My first online class and I had to read-read-read to pass. Overall Mr. Sims was a great instructor. He is responsive, helpful and engaging when you need help.
This was the second class I took from Dr. Sims and all I have to say is "What a great teacher". If you have to take a science class and Dr. Sims is the teacher, take him.
He is a great guy, but he needs to work on his pedagogical skills. If he takes couple of teaching and communication courses would be beneficial for him self as well as for his students.
This class was very hard. I berly managed to pass. The assignments and quizzes are fairly easy. The exams make up most of your grade. Exams are 50 questions in 50minutes. You have no time to look up answers. So studying is very important.
Great class, easy to learn! The professors way of teaching is really helpful.
What a great class, going into the final with an A! Dr. Sims is a wonderful teacher an always availble to students, even online students.
Worst online class I've ever taken. Only 2 days to complete assignments. Powerpoints clearly designed to accompany lecture and have lots of slides that are meaningless out of context. Course could be taught with better powerpoints and accompanying video of the lecture to greater effect, and save us all the absurd cost of the poorly written text.
Great teacher the best
This class is very easy if you show up and do your work .
Best professor I have ever had ! If we are struggling In the class, he will do everything he can to help us. Hes also hilarious ! Thank you Dr. Sims!
Excellent professor I would take his class again
The best
if you do not pass this class it is because you do not want to. He actually understand college students and give us opportunities to do better. Professor Sims, looks like he doesnt care about you, but if you do not take advantage of what he does, you are probably the one that doesnt care, not him. Read the book, take notes & you'll pass!
Class was great, learned a lot. Dr. Sims is awesome I suggest taking this class with and any other he teaches!
Great class, lots of reading, would take again
Lots of work to do but not hard if you stay on top of it. Dr sims is so helpful and wants you to do well but, he will not hold your hand. Quizzes are open book while test are not.
Hands down, best science professor at CSN! He is very understanding, even though he doesn't look like it. Take advantage of every single opportunity he gives you & I guarantee, you will pass. Do your work, take notes, read and you'll pass. I am not the best in science but taking his class makes me believe that I still have a chance. THANK YOU!
It took me a while to give a review of this awesome professor. My second online class and this professor was great. He grades supper fast, he's responsive, and his course is laid out in a simple format. I will take another class from Professor Sims.
Took the 16 week course, easygoing experience. 4 quizzes & exams are easy. Grading is a little harsh on the 3 page paper, know how to write in APA. About 10 worksheets that can be turned in late and some are extra credit. Says he doesnt post his powerpoints but ends up posting them for exams. Very easy to reach outside of class. Easy class.
One of the most knowledgeable guys out there, period point blank.
An excellent professor in his field. A good sense of humor and shows true heart for our planet. Someone who loves his job and knows exactly what he wants to pass on to his students. Only wants his students to pass but you have to put in effort for your own sake, youre the one paying for this class. Make the best of it because Dr. Sims is worth it!
He does expect you to do your part, so do it. Show up as much as possible, as he does give you all the information you need and keep up with your work. He is flexible, he wants you to pass. He offers a makeup exam/quiz and makeup assignment at the end of the semester, which is more opportunity than I have from other professors. He is great.
Great lectures and a very welcoming environment.
The class was very simple in terms of class time. You just sit and take notes but he is very helpful with insight regarding the material. Great Professor!
This class is easy enough. There is one assignment due per week and it is only a couple of sentences, so those are easy points. There are 5 modules and each module has a quiz(10 questions) and test(50 questions) that are timed for online. He gives an extra credit paper opportunity. It was interesting and he gets back to you fairly quickly.
Professor Sims is a great professor. Challenging but gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed and honestly just trying will get you a passing grade. He is very understanding of all parents and caregivers. Most of the grades come from online assignments that are one paragraph responses and in-class exams. One extra assignment a 3-page essay
Professor Sims is a great professor. Challenging but gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed and honestly just trying will get you a passing grade. He is very understanding of all parents and caregivers. Most of the grades come from in-class assignments that are packets from the lecture. Do the Essay! He literally hands everything you need!
Professor Sims was an amazing professor who truly makes his lectures interesting and allows us to learn in such an interactive way! Definitely need to read each chapter in order to be successful in the class also take great notes or your grade will reflect it. He gives packets and extra credit towards the end to help his students!
Great teacher, CSN needs more like Mr. Sims
This was my first online class and it was great. Dr. Sims has clear requirements and a schedule that I was able to follow. If you miss an assignment however, you do not get to make it up so, do not miss any items you are required to do.
Great teacher and class. Mr. Sims was awesome and I will take a class from him again if I can.
Show up and take notes at least most days (I also found Powerpoints online) & skim the chapter as per syllabus and you should have no problem passing. Lots of lecturing (reading straight off the slide, which can get a little annoying). Sometimes tries to engage class by asking questions we wouldn't typically know the answer to beforehand
Dr. Sims doesnt like complaining. Deadlines are listed, follow them. Read the chapters, do online research to compliment your answers. His syllabus is crystal clear and very easy to navigate as they should be. Do the work, dont complain and youll do fine. Hes been one of those teachers who changed my life.
Best professor hands down. He is very clear about his expectations and requirements. He is the most punctual and accurate professor I've had. Attendance was not mandatory, but he would have surprise quizzes so it's all on you. There was weekly homework, the book definitely helps!
Took his 8 week summer class. His syllabus is all over the place and is not consistent. All of the exams and quizzes were at the end of the semester. Heavy grader. Got A on every assignment and B on every test and got 91% overall. 50 question exams with only 50 minutes to finish. Take his summer class if you want to be constantly stressed out.
I didn't find this course interesting by any means but the professor was professional and even though, there was a lot of reading I found it to be an intellectual course.
If you dont get an A its probably because you didnt try. He makes it easy for students to pass. Quizzes, exams, and assignments are all online (online class). Simple class, easy A
Most of the answers were not found in the text book and the exams should be up to two hours at least to look at notes and answers online including the quizzes for 30 mins (at least). Reading a bunch of chapters for back to back exams should limited to a midterm and a final exam during the summer semester. Not everyone can catch on quickly.
This man is not caring or kind. He is unpleasant and has poor grammar. Apparently they just hand out PhDs.
