He is the best teacher that I have had at BYU. He is animated and excited with the subjects. With a little work you can get an A. I've taken two classes from him.
Definitely one of the best teachers I've had. He loves the subject, cares about the students, and gives reasonable, and helpful, homework. Also, fast feedback (grades on assignments, tests, etc.) Take him!
Weatherford is very positive and a fair grader. He has a sincere love for the literature, especially poetry. The readings are relatively small, and he goes over most material in class. I enjoy his class.
I've had Dr. Weatherford for three different classes. He is always very well prepared, his lessons are interesting and you can tell he cares that his students learn! I HIGHLY recommend him!!
LOVED HIM!! he is passionate about literature and he shows it in class. I highly recomend him!!
He's a great teacher. His tests are well written and if you study you should get an A. He grades the papers harder. Great guy!! He is one of the Best Professors at BYU!
He is a great professor. I don't know why people call him easy, I thought his classes were very hard, but VERY rewarding. He really gets you excited about the academy. His Spanish is perfect. I highly recommend Doug Weatherford's classes. It was worth the B+ to take his excellent class
The worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He favored latin students and was not very helpful. He doesn't give you any breaks on any late assignment or anything. He was mostly rude whenever I asked for extra help. Another guy that took the class with me feels the same way. I think it was because we didn't participate very much in class.
I really loved his class. He made literature very interesting for me. He just gets so excited about what he teaches. His tests were comprehensive and actually test you on what you know. This class was not easy but I learned a lot. I had to work hard but it was worth it.
Great teacher - his enthusiasm for the subject matter really helped me get into it, too. Tests require a lot of studying and the paper takes some time, too, but I would recommend his class to anybody.
Amazing class! There is so much to go over, but he never makes you feel overwhelmed. His enthusiasm makes you enjoy it. the reading and as you do it, fill out the study guides- It is what you need for the 3 short papers and for the tests. Different than any class you will ever take, enjoy!!!
Look, if you are looking for an easy Spanish class, steer clear! I don't know why everyone is saying he is so easy, when his classes require a lot of time to read, study for tests, and the massive paper. Sounds like everyone reviewing this class is so in love with spanish they are blinded by this guy's difficulty, honestly go eslewhere!
One of the best classes I have taken at BYU! Dr. Weatherford is so smart and entertaining. I learned SOO much from him and from the class. While the tests are a lot of material, he gives a study sheet that helps you get through it. It is not too difficult to get an A if you go to class prepared, and study for the exams. This is the best teacher.
If you love being tested on trivial information that by no means is transferable to any other type of learning this is the class for you. On the other hand if you are looking for a class that will focus on the concepts behind the trivial information of the subject, which in turn can be compared to other areas of learning take it from someone else.
His exuberance heavily outweighs his talent as a teacher. Information is presented very casually, but hard facts, names, and dates are expected on quizzes. There are countless assignments and quizzes. His Spanish, though correct for the most part, is incredibly overdone and poorly pronounced. Lectures are irritating and hard to sit through.
Tons of reading, impossibly hard pop quizzes, ridiculous amounts of busy work. He likes to listen to himself talk, and spends an absurd amount of time on Mexico, neglecting many notable events in other countries. He expects dates and details, so study up.
I got a C, along with a huge portion of the class. Nice blow to my GPA, I've never worked so hard with so little reward.
Great professor to learn from. While his tests are difficult and require a lot of studying, it is worth the education and knowledge gained in this class. There are many pop-quizzes but they are straightforward from the reading. Great class and great professor, highly recommended!
His class are challenging, but they are worth it. I learned so much and recommend his class to everyone I know taking Spanish
His class is kind of a joke, if you want to waste lots of time reading, take it. He doesn't cover much in class and his tests are way too broad and almost all of its from the reading. I would tell you to go take it from someone else.
I totally agree with the last review. Absolute waste of time.
GREAT CLASS. THE PROFESSOR WAS HELPFUL ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS. SOME OF THE QUIZ AND TEST QUESTIONS WERE HARDER THAN NECESSARY, BUT OVERALL THE QUIZES AND TESTS WEREN'T TOO HARD. I WOULD TAKE CLASSES FROM THIS PROFESSOR AGAIN.
Weatherford is a great teacher and makes his classes as entertaining as possible. if you do the readings and listen in class, it should be no problem. he is a cool and funny guy
If you enjoy literature and some philosophy, his lectures are excellent and thought-provoking. Selected readings were also interesting. He says his grading is holistic, though his expectations are somewhat unclear and his grading inconsistent and sometimes critical. He lectures in very clear Spanish and sometimes English and is easily understood.

Prof. Weatherford is a great teacher. He knows everything about Mexico and his lectures are fun. Theres almost always a cool documentary that he shows.Tests are a pain to study for because each test has a several page study guide which you have to practically memorize, but the tests pretty much come off of it word for word. Great teacher and class.
Professor Weatherford is an amazing teacher. He has a passion for latin america that shows through in all his lectures. he is willing to help, and is very personable and easy to approach with questions. His tests are hard, and you do have to study. If you dedicate the time necessary to this class, you will succeed.
If I had to choose a favorite professor from my BYU career, I would choose Prof. Weatherford. His tests were fair and homework was very reasonable. I am a business major and have always hated poetry, analyzing films/stories, etc. His passion for the subject completely changed my opinion on all of that. He's a GREAT teacher all around.
This guys is amazing. He is very interested in all his students and providing them with fair opportunities to receive the grades they earn. He provides a list of terms of everything that will be on the test.
This class is not easy, and you'll have to do the readings carefully, but the lectures are fascinating and you'll learn a ton!
Expect to spend at least 4 to 6 hours/week on his homework and another 4 to 6 hours/week preparing for his exams (if you don't spend 12 hours outside of class on homework you wont get a A or B). You will do well if you are crazy Latin America Hungry or want to slack in all the rest of your classes. I DO NOT!! RECOMMEND him. Not a pleasant person
This guy is a stud. He teaches well, and with clarity. If you are somewhat smart and work hard you can easily get in the A range. His tests are straight forward.
This class is awesome and Prof. Weatherford really loves it. Hispanic Cinema is something really interesting and he makes it really fun to learn about. The class wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. Just make sure to use the study guides and pay attention in class. I hardly took any notes and the reading was pretty interesting. Two thumbs up!
Hated the class. Hated it. Mostly because of my own bias against Spanish literature but I needed it for my minor. As a teacher he is pretty interesting and engaging, extremely passionate about what he is doing. Tests were extremely tough
I took this class a year ago and it was really enjoyable. Dr. Weatherford really knows his stuff and loves teaching and he's good at it. He made study guides for the tests which really helped. Some stuff in class you can't get from the readings, so don't miss class. If you study hard and keep up with the assignments you'll get a good grade.
Professor Weatherford has a passion for Latin American literature and is very knowledgeable and helpful. His tests are very doable if you read the assigned material, take good notes, and prepare well. He also requires a final research paper, cultural activities, and does pop quizzes on the readings. Most readings come from packets he has prepared.
Professor Weatherford is very passionate about literature and helps his students to be as well. He makes lectures so interesting. His tests are straightforward and he tells you what to expect on them. The papers are the only frustrating thing about his class. Make sure to start early and ask him for help! I would take another class from him.
Dr. Weatherford is the best. He will make you fall in love with spanish literature! (I didn't think it was possible). So enthusiastic, very clear, and not a hard grader. I want to take all of his classes. Not a demanding load at all (Three tests, some quizzes, and a few compositions)
Professor Weatherford has been one of my favorite professors at BYU. The content of the course was not something that I find interesting but his passion and attitude for spanish literature is contagious. If you read the readings carefully and attend class you will do well in this class. He is excellent and I look forward to taking him again.
Professor Weatherford is wonderful. He is not an easy grader, but he is very willing to help you and gives lots of extra credit. He is very passionate about what he teaches and expects you to work hard. There is quizzes in class and lots of little assignments throughout the semester, so attendance is a must.
Prof. Weatherford's enthusiasm for Spanish literature is contagious. There was a good mix of class activities that helped me to be involved and give input in class discussions. Class discussions were very helpful in unpacking/ complex writing. Professor Weatherford was sensitive to students' needs and went out of his way to be fair in grading.
Very enthusiastic. Super clear about his expectations of the students in order to get a good grade. It is necessary to read the homework carefully because he gives several quizzes throughout the semester to test comprehension. Really helped me understand and willing to answer questions. Very fair. Knows a lot and inspired me.
I put this class off for several semesters because I was dreading it, but with Dr. Weatherford I really enjoyed it in the end. It was one of the more difficult spanish classes I have taken, but he does an excellent job keeping it interesting. He makes his expectations very clear and if you do your part you will have no problem.
He is very passionate about literature and makes the class enjoyable because of his energy. He knows a lot about the subject and helps students get into it. He grades really fair, and lets you know exactly what you need to study before the tests. You do have to put in the time, but it's doable and you learn a lot.
He is an amazing professor. Class is so fun! He is so passionate! The only drawback is there is SO much content for the test. The study guides are enormous and a lot of the info to fill them out you have to look for yourself. He is not helpful outside of class at all which surprised me based on his passionate character and I didn't expect that
Dr. Weatherford is very knowledgeable in his subjects and has a strong passion to share it. His class is strong in content so take good notes and have a study group if you want to survive. The only problem I had in his class was that he doesn't post any of his PowerPoints, so be in class! He was helpful outside of class for me.
He is one of the best Spanish professors at the University because he causes you to learn little bits of everything. You come to truly understand Latin American history. His style of teaching is not for everyone, but he certainly has inspired me to continue learning about Latin American events and figures. I would take any Spanish class from him.
My absolute favorite professor at BYU. You have to work to get an A but he makes it possible. I have taken 4 classes from him and I have absolutely loved it. He has helped me gain a greater knowledge and passion for Latin American history, culture and literature. A MUST.
He is an awesome professor. Knows his stuff and is very passionate. He tells you exactly what is on his tests. As long as you do the readings, go to class, and study for the tests it should be fairly easy to get in the A range.
He is very passionate about Latin American Civilization, but his lectures were all over the place, the readings hardly followed with lectures, and the tests were almost impossible to study for. If you are good at memorizing lots of information, this is your class. He is also not very flexible with people with a different learning curve.
This was one of the most unorganized classes I have ever taken at BYU. The professor is all over the place and cant keep his info straight. Avoid. His Spanish is also very difficult to understand. He has a overwhelmingly strong gringo accent.
Such a fun class! Be willing to work for your grade! Professor Weatherford is a great man and makes his class very fun. I wasn't very interested in Spanish Literature at the begging of his class but because of his class I have a more open outlook on SpanishLit. Great man, Fun class! His tests are fine as long as you study the study guide given!
Professor Weatherford is great! His lectures were very engaging and he cares a lot about his students. His tests are straightforward if you follow his study guides. He does have pop quizzes but they are not too bad and he often offers extra credit on them. He can be a tough grader on essays, but between everything it balances out. Take his class!
My favorite professor at BYU for sure. He makes you work for the grade with participation, readings, and pop quizzes, but he offers bonus points too. I could really tell he cares about his students and the topic, and he has really perfected his teaching technique. I'd love to take any other class with him!
Class seems to be far more difficult than it needs to be, full of straight memorization of names and obscure facts, which are pop-quizzed frequently. Get ready to read, some nights there are multiple hours to read from a confusing textbook. Great man that is very enthusiastic but the class itself was stressful and frustrating.
I loved this class from Professor Weatherford. His lectures are really interesting, he uses lots of different video clips and pictures that make the lecture engaging. He is very passionate about the topic and is very clear about what you need to do to do well. If you do the readings and do the assignments and study for tests, you will do well!
If you have to take this class, take it from him! He requires a good deal from his students in terms of preparation; however, this has lead a great class. He knows his material and has a lot of insight. Get ready to put work in, but if you do the reading, tests and quizzes are easy.
I have taken four classes from him because he is awesome. He is extremely passionate about his courses and he LOVES Latin America. He is definitely an expert which makes his lectures very interesting. He does expect you to do the reading and participate in class discussions but his class is very doable. He really nice and wants you to do well.
Very difficult class, full of long, confusing readings, pop quizzes, difficult tests, and a 7-14 page essay at the end. Professor is a harsh grader and critic. The class requires a certain passion and love for literature that I definitely didn't have, but some students do have.
I really respect him a lot. His grading is harsh though. You can fulfill the requirements and spend hours on papers but if it's not written as HE would have written it then you won't get the grade you deserve which is really unfortunate. Pop quizzes are given for about 1.5 minutes and the questions can be on very minute details.
This was definitely the most challenging, yet rewarding, Spanish class I have taken at BYU. Dr. Weatherford is exceptionally passionate about the topic and his lectures are incredible. Readings for each class are required to perform well on the pop quizzes and exams. I recommend this class and really enjoyed taking it from Dr. Weatherford.
Old fashioned class structure. Curriculum & expectations are intense. Rubrics are literally pages of stuff to remember. VERY strict attendance & participation. Tests are open-ended. Collaborating on study guides not allowed. Lots of ways to lose points, little extra credit. Tough grader. Passionate about literature though.
LOTS of reading, detailed pop quizzes, tough grading, but a very doable class! His passion and enthusiasm for the material are super contagious. I felt like his tests were pretty predictable and not too bad though. He is a good teacher and I would recommend him to any who are interested in Spanish and not afraid to work a little for it.
Professor Weatherford is an outstanding professor who cares about his students' success and has built his course to benefit them. He is approachable, enthusiastic, and understanding, but he never lowers his high expectations for us. His assignments and test are both challenging and fair. His love for this art is very notable.

Weatherford is an engaging and interesting lecturer. He does a great job of inviting participation. I was impressed at how profound he could be in his analysis of film. He does have a distinct taste in film. He likes films where nothing happens and the camera doesn't move. I can appreciate that.
Professor Weatherford is a great professor. His International Cinema class is really interesting and he does a really great job keeping it engaging. He does have very clear grading criteria so it is easy to do the assignments and get an A. Make sure that you are actually watching the movies. It is a bit of a time commitment but it is fairly easy.
Profe Weatherford is great! I had to work hard for my grade, but I learned the material very deeply. Favorite Spanish professor at BYU. The reading is heavy, but his lectures made my own effort worth it. If you want to learn about this subject, this is the profe for you! If you just need want credit, look for someone else. I love Span Lit now!
Great guy. Great teacher, but you find yourself every night asking "why am I doing this?". Prof. Weatherford has a passion so deep for literature and film you can't really blame him for being overexcited all the time. And beware, he writes a strict syllabus that you should expect to follow very intently. He does not like to budge or make exceptions
Took it for Spanish and letters ge. It was one of my harder classes when I took it but also the most interesting. He is super passionate about his subject and you learn to love the material through his teaching. A very good professor overall, little annoying and repetitive at times, looks like Robin Williams, is easy grader on tests IF you study
I literally love this guy. He looks like Robin Williams, he's always happy, and he's super willing to help. You do have to spend time outside of class reading and studying like maybe 2 hours per week. If you do that, you'll do just fine in the class. I don't like literature in English let alone Spanish, but I actually really enjoyed this class
Dr. Weatherford clearly loves what he teaches, and if you are well versed in film, you'll find this class easy. Make sure to stay on top of watching the movies and completing the writeups. Learn to be comfortable speaking up in both small groups and in front of the whole class. Requires a lot of time outside of class.
Not going to lie, he rubbed me the wrong way when the semester started, but he became one of my favorite professors ever by the end. Not a tough grader on essays, tests are predictable and fair if you come to class and watch the movies. Don't expect a cakewalk and put in the work and you'll be fine. Class is very interesting and fun!
He is a very nice guy and very passionate about Spanish culture. But he gives ridiculous readings and he gives quizzes on the readings without telling you. Our first two reading assignments of the year was a 60 pg reading on some boring textbook, and the 2nd was 80 pages on an old Mayan culture book that was deathly boring. Avoid this class
As a film lover, this class was a pleasure - watch films and get credit! If you love film and want to broaden your taste, this is a perfect class. Prof. Weatherford is very, very passionate about International Cinema and facilitates great discussion. He could work on pacing and managing time during class, but overall a solid teacher.
Profe Weatherford is my favorite Spanish teacher at BYU. This was my second class with him (also took 330). He's always cheerful, stays super organized, and is very clear of what is expected. You definitely have to study, but he prides himself on teaching a very doable class if you're willing to work. Take his class!!
I LOVE DOUG WEATHERFORD. I took him for international cinema, and he was incredible. From the very first lecture, he exhibited so much passion and enthusiasm for what he was teaching. It made me so excited for what I would learn. He really knows his stuff and he is able to open your eyes to new things and perspectives. ICS was an easy class too.
He is an excellent person. However, there is a lack of clear "what will be on the test." Of course, he is the kind of professor to say, well, you came to the class to learn, not to be tested. We had to basically memorize the poems and short stories because he had random quotes that he would pull for the test. The study guides are useless.
He is a tough person, being in the field for so long, he has lost touch with how students are and we learn. Very little support for knowing what he wants. He basically has you start guessing on tests and quizzes because you don't know when they are coming and don't know what he is looking for in the text. Decent person, unclear professor
He acts like a nice, understanding guy in class, but because of his knowledge of the stories and the experience in his field, it is incredibly hard to know what he wants you to know as a student. Every exam was a guess, but he still would say, "I'm clear on expectations." He will pick random quotes from each story you read and ask you to finish it.
He does random quotes from the readings but never tells you what the quotes could be. He says that we are to recognize it from the way it was written. Lectures are in-depth and discuss many things that aren't on the tests. He has robust knowledge but is terrible at relaying that information. Quizzes are at random. I would not suggest this professor
Tests were always containing a random quote section. You really have to write to what he likes, not what research supports. If you take him, good luck! He does pick favorites
He told me, as a STEM student, that he does not like how STEM students approach things and would be better if they didn't take his class. I agree with him after the semester, terribly picky with his readings. Quoting from the text as if we were to already know what he was thinking. Not a good class to take from him.
He is passionate and cheerful and loves what he teaches. There is a lot of history to know and often the material you are expected to know on pop quizzes/tests is pretty obscure. Sometimes class felt like show-and-tell of all the cool places he's been and things he's done and stuff he's written which wasn't my favorite (felt like he was bragging).
