He's very energetic.
Great teacher. Very excited about genetics, and wants to help students as much as possible. Skipping class is a bad idea, his tests questions are practically right out of the notes. Doing the problems out of the book is a very good idea!
Very tough, but interesting course. Sometimes difficult to reach for outside of class help.
Best class I've ever had. Clear, enthusiastic, great teacher. Has inspired me to major in genetics!!

Quite possibly the WORST professor at Oakland University!
Great prof. always available for questions and makes study guides to help study for the test that are exactly like the test! Definitely recommended. Nice guy.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had.
Don't take him.Very disorganized, and confuses things a lot.Very interested in Genetics...but less interested in teaching Biology 111!Unapproachable.Tests are hard.Study sheets do NOT help! You better get ready to read outside materials!
DO NOT take this teacher at any cost!
Do not take this teacher!Cares too much about advance biology classes, and not enough about his own Bio 111 class.Hard to understand, skips around, and often contradicts himself.Half the class failed first exam...curved final grades, so grades looked decent
rehash of everything you learned in bio 1. No new topics! Basic terminology class. Very boring.
Please,do not take this teacher for Bio 111.He is very confusing, does not explain things well&is irritated easily. There was a 50% failure rate in my class on exams! This class will not help your GPA especially if you're in the nursing program!
He is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. He is really good in Genetics and is always available to answer questions. He is the best for Genetics!
I had him for Bio 111 and he was nothing like the above statements. I dont believe his class is that difficult unless you dont do any of the homework. My GPA was actually pretty high in this class however it is necessary to do the assigned homework.
He confuses material a lot. Makes study questions that are some what helpful. Test are kinda hard. You really have to work in this class
worst teacher i have ever had. tests too hard for an intro class. expects way too much as if grad students. don't take if you don't want to have to re`take bio!
ALmost complete waste of time. If I didn't have friends in class I woud have dropped. Ridiculously simple class, to the point of being useless and a waste of money. No new material and old notes from bio11 are almost exactly the same.
He is a great prof. Not the best at lectures but he always makes himself availabe and puts sample problems and homework on line! You will be hard pressed in your bio career to find a prof.who takes the time and cares enough to do that. Just study,go to class and do the HW its not a hard class.
This is a horruble professer. By all means dont take this persun for BIO111

I am not very happy with this professor. My friend is taking the exact same class with a diff professor & they are moving a lot slower (tests are over 5 chapters as opposed to 8) their class average is a 80something.. guess what, ours was a 67% or something right around there.. he often says "i dont know" when you ask questions. BOO
too many things to remember! Expects you to be prefect, when he himself took the class more then once.
clear and moves at a good pace for people with previous bio, but could be difficult for people without previous bio
Pretty easy teacher for a 300 level class. His tests are pretty easy if you put the work in. The lab is extremely easy. Very little work out of class for the lab.
His lectures are pretty boring and unorganized. The tests are pretty much all from the homework assignments he gives you. If you know how to do the homework problems then you should do fine on the tests and in the class.
He is pretty difficult. When you ask him a question- he gets way off topic, and never answers your question. He is just all over the place. he cant stand in one spot, and seems to be a little unorganized. there was a lot to review for the 1st test. he talks to his students like they are in their 3rd year of bio. :(
Good Teacher... Hard to stay focused because he doesn't stay on topic long, but interesting when he does. Is excited about biology, knows his stuff. Tests require a lot of effort but easy if u do the study guides.
Good teacher and the tests are easy as long as you study.
Dr. Wendell was one of my favorite professors. He is kind of scatter-brained, but is always happy to help explain something. Do the work on WebCT, it will help greatly in the tests. He pulls almost all of the information on the test from his notes in class and WebCT. The lab was ridiculously easy to get a 4.0 in.
Terrible professor, his lectures are merely based on what came to his mind. His exams are ridiculous, the class avg was always a C. I wouldn't recommend him unless you are willing to put in a large amount of effort.
If you're taking this class just to fulfill a gen ed requirement...don't. But if you're a bio major or pre-med then he's a great teacher. Although he does go in depth, he's pretty clear. Take good notes, and you'll be fine. I got a 4.0 and barely read the book, just did the study guides and took a lot of notes.
I think Wendell is a good instructor and his quirkiness is humorous to me. He gave good supplemental instruction to our lab which was primarily taught by miss julie, the best TA i've ever had. The lab is straight forward and Wendell's expectations are made clear. Pay attention and take your time and you will do fine.
Very disorganized and introduces material in a very confusing and scattered manner. Very disappointing =[ Got a 1.8 with this prof...re-took the same class with a different prof and got a 3.6.
I've had Wendell for BIO 111, 341, 342, and now 419. He is very straightforward. There are no surprises. If you do take good notes in class, you will be fine for the tests. He knows what he is talking about, and knows how to teach it, which is refreshing.
Took BIO341,342,and 419, now doing undergrad research with him. Great professor- yes a bit scattered, but if you're prepared and intellegent you can follow along just fine. Quirky, yes, but its amusing. Realistic expectations, Exams are ALWAYS written but that leaves room for partial credit. Fair grader. Good Professor. very knowledgable.
A bit scatterbrained and hard to follow in his lectures. But he's fair with his exams and its all straight outta the homework that he gives. Genetics is simple: read the chapters, do the hw, go to class, get a good grade. Its not bad at all. You gotta put in some effort but he won't cheat you out of a grade. Would def take again.
Ok here it is- dont take during fall b/c there is 3 exams only, take it during winter w/ 5 exams...no exams are dropped....honestly, he's not a good prefessor but he also isn't a bad one. Study class notes and look (not read) inside text for refs. Must put in effort if you want a good grade. His exam/ hw questions are not all that clear, sometimes.
Very knowledgeable and straight forward.. answers everyone's questions in class and even offered study sessions after class before test day.. his tests are kind of difficult because they are conceptual questions
Took the online class during the summer. His notes were mostly useless, study the study questions and read the book. If he writes about a topic it will be heavy on the exam. If you have ques, use google. Teaching is not this guy's calling (Not friendly, doesn't care). Avoid.
Great bio course. Involves picking apart papers related to the topics covered. This is much more effective than the typical "lecture and regurgitate" course. Genetics is a very active field, but Dr. Wendell makes it a point to stay on top of the newest techniques. It's refreshing to have a professor who doesn't just repeat old, outdated, material.
Okay, I am an average student. Everything you need to know is on the lecture notes. He assigns hw problems that are very similar to exam questions. Fair grader. No need for the book, unless you are looking for a way to blow your money.
He's rude and doesn't know his material well. He struggles to answer questions in class and the lectures are extremely boring. Do the homework questions before exams cause they're similar, make sure you know everything on the homework extremely well and you should be ok.
Very good. Highly Recommend. He cares a lot about his students and appreciates students attending office hours. He even takes notes on the text and puts them online. So the book was a waste of money for me.
I don't know what the other reviewer was listening to, but this guy definitely knows his stuff. The content of this class is pretty difficult but his study guide questions are basically the same as the exam, so just review those and you're good. I would definitely take him again. Don't waste money on the book, his notes are posted and thorough.
I wasn't all that impressed with this professor. I went to his office a few times for help. He's smart and definitely knows his stuff, but he's not very good at teaching the material and pretty awkward to talk to. Don't waste money on the book, I bought it and only used it once. Use the homework questions to study, they help!
Easy lab. Never saw the professor which is understandable because its an easy lab taught by a TA. The TA was helpful and nice. Wendell's quiz/assignment questions were misleading sometimes which was frustrating...
This class is not hard & not easy either. Lectures are boring but try to pay attention & write as much as you can bc the notes he posts are good but not detailed. I would fill in the notes w/other sources. Half the exam is from the study ?'s & the other half are fill in the blanks, short response, defining vocab from notes. A 4.0 is not impossible!
The professor himself was only there for the first day of lab. The TA, Stacey, who ran the labs was a greattt help. She's very thorough and detailed when answering questions. The only downside is that there are weekly quizzes that are weighed heavily.
Took this class online over the summer. His syllabus was very clear cut and easy to follow. Lots of work, but expected in short time span. If you actually do all the reading and (optional) homework assignments, the exams are very easy & are based off of the homework questions. Would take again.
Pretty straight forward professor & class overall. There's a vast amount of information and concepts to know, but for the most part they're not too difficult to learn and understand. Take notes on the topics, do the associated homework and you should do well. The exams were fair and very similar to the homework problems.
hardest thing i've ever done
I truly enjoyed myself in his class. I would take a class with him again any day. He is an amazing professor. The professor of my dreams.
This professor is very helpful whenever you need him. He is always available for you. His exams are very tough but you have to work hard. You don't need a book for his class because he post his own lecture notes online. I highly recommend to take with him but be prepared to study a lot.
Dr. Wendell is amazing. ALTHOUGH I do not get to experience his awkward lectures, he is still quite helpful. HE is overly compassionate about his field and has high expectations for his students. STUDY OFTEN because those exams creep up on you quickly. He will take some of your technology struggles into consideration when extending deadlines.
Genetics online is an online textbook with problems and ALL fill in the blank tests. It is easy to get behind because of the quantity of reading, and the illusion you don't have to study the material well, since tests are non cumulative. You have to go through the material thoroughly and do ALL study problems. That said, VERY fair grading.
4 in class, non cumulative exams, which each account for 15% of your final course grade. The other 40% is based on written assignments usually answering basic questions about research papers discussed the class. The written assignments are due outside of class and due to moodle. Know everything on his study guide. Study hard! Class was informative.
Wendell is a good professor, he's definitely passionate about the subject of Genetics, and wants you to do well in the class. Everyone failed the first exam so he offered a make-up exam so we can earn back our points. The class is therefore NOT easy! You have to study a lot if you atleast want a decent passing grade.
Dr. Wendell WANTS you to do well. He's a really nice professor. He is passionate about his field. Some of his lectures don't make sense, but he does post notes and assignments on moodle, which helps TREMENDOUSLY on the exam.
Easiest biology lab course at the university. Great for someone interested in genetics or exploring the medial field.
Dr. Wendell is very knowledgeable. He answers any questions you may have, although will take a few minutes of explanation to give a simplified and understandable response. The tests are not hard if you go to lecture each day and pay attention. Dr. Wendell makes example problems giving a very good idea of the style & content of ?s asked on any test.
His exams are short answer, however, he makes it very clear as to what will be on them. Attend class, take notes and study outside of class and you will no doubt succeed in the class. A lot of it is memorization with equations here and there. Super straight forward professor.
If you do all of his optional genetics homework and read all the publications he puts up, you'll get an A in this class easily. It is memorization, but it's very applicable and easy when you do the homework.
Had him for his genetics lab, i really did have to work for it lol, hated it. i had a terrible and emotionless TA and i didn't learn much in the lab as i thought i would. but im sure he's a good prof in his own class. his quizzes are graded very harshly where its out of 20 points which is fine but each question is worth 4-6 points so hard to get A
He is an amazing professor he is very helpful and cares about his students especially those who could fall behind. His tests are pretty good.
He really makes sure that the students really know what they are doing in order to pass his class.
His homework questions are the best in all the biology class that I have ever taken.
He really gives good problems that will help you be prepared for his exams which are not too bad.
Based off tests only. His readings are way too dense and his tests only cover few important topics. Written tests only and he's picky about your word usage. Few times I wasn't specific enough apparently and he didn't give me credit. Would've aced it if it was MC. Doesn't offer much help at office hours. Doesn't value effort- just test scored based.
This is the best biology class I have ever taken. He may not be a fun and goofy professor but his teaching is the best ever which is more important when it comes to teaching. He is still a very nice guy too.
Prof Wendell makes the genetics exams way harder than the rest of the other professors. You have to know super tiny details. Your grade depends only on the 4 exams so you have to study a lot and know all the details. Overall pretty good professor just make sure to do the homework and practice!!
This professor is no good. This was an online course that is condensed. Genetics being already a difficult subject, this professor did nothing to help. He literally just posted readings and gave you a time & to arrive to test. He literally did not teach the course. Exams written based & HARD. offers No EC. And doesnt care at all about your grade
The online summer class is based solely on his personal notes on Genetics. I found the readings easy and interesting, but felt the tests focused on a lot of smaller details compared to what the topics were actually about. Because the test is based almost solely on your exams, if you don't do well you will fail. Wish the tests were MC.
Wendell is a true expert in genetics. He goes off on tangents but he explains everything you need to know for the class VERY well. I didnt always go to class, but I always did the hw and read his note packets and was set. Only thing is that your grade is only based on exams, so theres no wiggle room and an A is a 95 so little room for error.
Doug was a really nice guy and a great teacher. My favorite thing about him by far is that he said significant figures don't matter and he doesn't care about them. His class is well structured and you know what to expect. I took his course when it had to go online due to coronavirus and he was very understanding and kind.
Professor Wendell is a great professor! Hes a nice guy and honestly cares about whether or not his students understand the material. The class is graded out of 1000 points and consists of just 4 250 point tests. He prepares you well for them and his homework questions are very helpful, but you still have to put in the work to do well
Professor Wendell was one of the best science professors I have had. I took the Summer 2021 online 8-week Genetics course and understood more about genetics than I have in any other course. Prof. Wendell takes the time to explain things clearly and concisely and in a way that makes sense. He readily answers student questions!
Some genetics classes teach you Mendelian genetics. In this class you learn Wendellian genetics. Had Dr. Wendell back in W19, and I am going back in time a few yrs to tell you how great of a professor he is. His lectures & lecture notes are concise, yet comprehensive, and he gives you lots of practice problems that directly correlate to the exams.
Dr. Wendell is an amazing professor! His exams are very fair and he posted lectures on each topic AND discusses them during lecture time as well. Genetics is a hard topic so you need to put some time and effort but he makes sure that you have everything you need to succeed! I would definitely take him again for a different course if I can
Dr. Wendell uses his own notes on each topic in place of a textbook. The material is concise and not too much to take on. All you need to do is watch the lecture video, read the notes, and take the quiz. He provides study questions that are similar to exam questions, but it's still an easy pass if you choose not to do them. Great professor.
He's nice and explains things well. He has a lot of resources on moodle to explain the topics. The class isn't too difficult as long as you watch or attend lecture, read the reading/ do study questions. The only thing is that your grade is mostly based on the exams, so study really hard for them. He'll also answer questions really well.
He is a pretty good professor, but he only grades on 4 tests. Nothing else. The tests are 90% short answer, and he does not offer any extra credit or assignments to raise your grade. Asked for ec mid semester but he wouldn't budge. Also, I ended the class with 89.5% and he refused to round my grade to an 90. Overall he's alright.
He was a fine lecturer but the exams were mostly short answer and required an extreme amount of attention to detail when in lecture. Basically write down every single thing he says that was not in the slides, as he's one of those that deliberately tests on stuff not in the slides.
Those complaining about the long-answer tests obviously weren't paying enough attention to his VERY CLEAR grading criteria. If you study the material, the fill-in-the-blank & written questions of his exams will be a breeze. Obviously, genetics isn't the easiest, but you can tell how much Dr. W loves it & that's what makes it fun!
Honestly... meh. I could have just read the book and watched a youtube video and learned the same thing. OU really needs to try to hire professors that are teachers, not just researchers. There's really no enthusiasm in the classroom from anyone here. It's sad, really.
i had him for genetics and honestly stopped showing up to class halfway through them semester. Your grade is based entirely off 4 exams which are 90% short answer/fill in the blank. as long as you read the material and do the study questions (which are sometimes exactly the same on the exams) you should be able to pass the class just fine.
All of the material is his own writing, and his lectures are just him going over his own writing. So you don't have a different perspective. He is a nice guy, but not a very good teacher. All the tests are short answer, draw a diagram, etc. It is super hard to study for the exams because you don't have an indication of what to focus on.
Dr. Wendell is super passionate about genetics, and that's what made this class fun. The best way for me to study was to really go in depth in the study questions he provides. He also gives a glossary of important terms to know-if you study their definition that will definitely give you an advantage for the exam. Overall a very fair grader.
It's not that he is a bad professor it's just that this class is tough with tough material. Your grade is based off of 4 exams, so there is little room for error. If you read his topic notes and do the study questions and make sure you really know it, you will do well.
Professor Wendell was nice, but he doesn't go over the things that'll be on the test. He talks about different topics and you're not sure what to focus on when studying. Grade is based on 4 exams & he gives slides & study guides for each topic but there is so much to read and doesn't tell you what to focus on. He doesn't try to help you either.
Professor Wendell is not a bad professor he's super nice but not the best teacher. Attendance is not mandatory. Honestly as long as you do the readings and study guide for each topic you'll be fine. His class is based on only 4 exams but most of his exam questions are from the actual study guide or are similar so make sure you go over them.
Honestly, I believe Dr. Wendell is underrated. I believe Dr. Wendell is a great professor and very caring since he is attentive to answering student's questions in class. To receive an A in the class, make sure to focus on the readings and definitely the study questions. The study questions are very very identical to the questions given on exams!!
I had Dr Wendell several years ago, but was reminded recently of this great purveyor of Wendellian genetics & was compelled enough to come on Rate My Professors to tell YOU to take him for BIO3400. A nice dude & very knowledgeable. His tests were fairly accurate to his lesson notes. If memory serves, tests were most(all?) of the class grade
As long as you do the study guides and do the readings, you will do well in this class. However, he is not a great lecturer. He always seems to be nervous which makes it difficult to understand him. You can't learn from him, but you can learn from the material he provides to you. All tests are written, no multiple choice. So, make sure you learn.
avoid him; took this 1 credit lab too serious, unlike his TA.
His genetics lab wasn't necessarily difficult-I was not a fan of how computer based it was. I wish it was more focused on the hands on labs with paper worksheets. Some students are not computer savvy and don't care to be- That's okay. The programs wouldn't work half the time too. I would be stressed out knowing we have computer stuff those days.
This rating is for BIO 4402. He kind of mumbles during his lectures but when he uses the board it ain't that bad. Content isn't super difficult to conceptualize, BUT exams are usually 80-90% free response, so you got to really know your stuff to get an A. His practice questions he gives out are very very good for test studying. Overall decent prof.
Took for BIO 4402, he was a good professor but exam heavy. Exams are short answer and free response. He is not the best at consolidating info/doesn't give clear answers to questions. Overall not the worst for the class, but get ready to work. If you read his readings, go to class consistently, and do practice problems you will be fine.
