He does a great job of teaching math even if you know nothing about it,and he really seems to care about the students learning. He is very helpful!!
very hard....not hlpful at all...rude and annoying...if you struggle in math DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
he does ALOT of examples in class so if your paying attention you'll get alot out of it ..and anwsers the homework questions before theyre due..i found him to be very good in helping you understand..i thought he was a good teacher and very helpful!

Can not explain anything well. He tries to teach a concept without explaining WHAT it is.
Do not take his class if you are bad at math. I had to drop the class because I was going to fail miserably, but I spent most of my time in the math tutor center. I learned way more in there than I did in class. Hes good about doing examples on the board, but a lot of the time he assumes you know things...when I usually didnt. The tests werent TOO bad, but webwork has absolutley nothing to do with what we did in class. I dont know how the hell he decides to put the probs on there that he does.
If you have a hard time understanding foreign professors, stay away from the Williams. He is a great teacher and knows a lot about math, but his accent causes him to say things like "terd" instead of "third" and "tengs" instead of "things" This class was just okay.
Hes a rude little man from Belize. His class was hard...he assumes you know things, and his webwork probs have absolutley nothing to do with what he taught in class. I have always been really good at math and this class kicked my ass, I had to drop it.

Ugh. Don't take him if you can help it.
He gives extra credit and allows you to make up homework. DO THE HOMEWORK! He will work with you if you do your part.
I enjoyed being in his class. I thought he was a good teacher. He did have a little bit of an accent, but I often found it pretty funny. He usually gives alot of answers to homework and reviews completely before tests. There are probably way better teachers than him, but overall he's pretty good.
Love me some Williams. Clear in translating formulas into simple English. His accent lightens up the class. The first day I thought the class was going to bore my mind, but I soon found that Williams has a great personality. He sets WebWork back weeks, so the class is not fast paced. Only set back is that he gives quizzes (easy) almost everyday.
He is a very nice person, but tough to understand. He generally extends the homework period. Do the homework, because it is youronly shot doing well in the class.
Williams is the best teacher in town. He gives you weeks to do homework and his tests and quizzes are the easiest things on the planet. The guy also loves extra credit. If you show up and do the easy work its A+ all day. And if you ask him about his past the guy will talk all day. Love the guy.
His accent and manner is fun and approachable. He isn't laxed, but is helpful. The tests are challenging, but that's the homework and quizzes are just to keep you on top of the material.

he is a decent teacher, the class wasn't easy but if you do the homework and stay on top of it you should do fine.
Really disliked this teacher. Said he was willing to help but when it came right down to it he always acted annoyed when questions were asked of him outside of class. He was condescending and I wouldn't recommend him. Class on the whole is decent as long as you stay on top of the homework.
Prof. Williams is a very good professor and extremely fair. He is generous with homework assignments, and is happy to help if you visit him during office hours. Does he have a slight accent - yes, but it's not a problem at all. He's one of the best professors in the ASU math department, and I highly recommend him to any student.
good teacher if your going right from high school into calc expects you to be up to data on all your algabra only rough part.. but good teacher
awesome teacher. he made math enjoyable and easy to understand. i totally recommend him. he'll explain anything if you have a question. seriously, AWESOME teacher.
he was pretty clear and very lenient on homework. i thought that he explained the material well and was fairly willing to help.
He was a pretty good teacher! He would always extend homework if someone asked him do. He gives extra credit on the exams which helped a lot!! And a big curve at the end for the final grade! He's really helpful and cares about his students! The only bad thing is that he teaches fast in class. So it's a lot of material all at once!
Williams explains the material pretty clearly with plenty of examples. He is pretty lenient on homework and uses it mostly to help students learn the material. Probably one of the best professors I've ever had.
Great teacher. Great guy. Both in MAT 210 and 211 gives real world applications of material learned. Tough subjects but wants students to succeed and thus is very generous with points. I would take another class taught by him in a heartbeat!
I am a mathphobe. This man helped me learn to like math. I now understand the material. A true educator!!
This class was so easy and Williams is a great teacher! Math is obviously challenging for most people and the ones who did poorly in his class were the students who just didn't pay attention or bother to study. He gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed. Most of the test questions come from webworks so do the homework. Easy A!
Williams is an adorable man! Even though he is hard to understand, he is soo willing to help you succeed in his class. He tries to crack jokes and it is so cute with his accent :) I absolutely hate math but feel like I was okay in this class.
This guy is not a good teacher at all. He goes way to fast explaining material in class and its way to hard to follow. The three tests plus the final exam are worth 70% of your grade and he's one of those teachers that tries to trick you on tests. Homework isn't that hard but I WOULD NOT recommend taking this teacher.
I only got a B in pre-calc in high school and got an A+ in William's brief calc class. High workload of hw but it's online and gives you step by step directions to the problems. His lectures were clear and I understood him. Make sure you can do the study guides/pratice tests he gives you and you'll do well on the tests. The final was hard though.
He goes really fast with material. Sometimes you can't really understand what he's saying, but he's an interesting guy. He is also very slow with grades and doesn't fix them when he messes up until the very last minute.
really wants students to succeed - moves at a very fast pace tho - it is hard to learn anything bc u are so focused on getting the notes copied before he erases them. daily quizzes are easy points if u show up. ALOT of online hw. multiple choice tests.
This teacher bites. I took his online math class and right from the get go you can tell he's one of those professors who puts the class on "auto pilot" and doesn't want to be disturbed beyond what the syllabus and his online math program tell you to do. Not responsive to e-mails except in short, curt, unhelpful one-liners. Take someone else.
He's hard to understand at first, but you get used to it. His classes usually consist of him going over examples and problems from WebWork. You don't need the book AT ALL. The tests are okay and can be challenging. He checks attendence everyday and usually has a quiz once a week.
Prof. Williams is from Belize and speaks some dialect of English that was completely incomprehensible. I dropped and found the material much easier to learn from the next professor.
This class I did not learn anything. Williams goes way too fast when explaining material. When you ask him question, he responds in a negative tone. He messes up all the time when teaching equations and the smart Asian classmates correct him, at least 5 times per class.
This is probably the worst math teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Hes extremely hard to understand because he is foreign. He's really rude and has NO idea what hes teaching. He means well but really sucks. On the bright side you don't have to buy a textbook bc you wont use it. But he does take attendance every single day!
Mandatory attendence, homework online unlimited attempts, foreign but clearly speaks english, is a nice guy, understanding toward rotc and military personnel, Took Fall of '09
I have always suffered from math phobia and Prof. Williams has a relaxed style that took the stress out of Math. He will go over it until you understand and not once did I see or hear him make anyone feel stupid, even me.
Calculus and math in general has always been a weak point for me, and taking it online terrified me. I love the format of this class and Professor Williams is amazingly helpful. The midterm was extremely difficult (as it had to be taken in person), but overall the class itself has been wonderful.
Took class online. Midterm and final are ON CAMPUS. You need to know how to take an online class to be ready for this (you need to really study, it's calculus). The prof is good about getting back to you, and was very, very generous in moving due dates with our class (our original prof bailed and he had to make adjustments for us: understanding).
Good math teacher. Go to class take notes and do the mymathlab stuff. You shouldn't need the book.
cool teacher the class started off as an easy going class and the subjects were so easy later on the HURRICANE started and the class started to get insane he will explain subjects as if he's talking to himself the online homework is a pain and takes alot of time !
Took the online summer session. Professor Williams was very helpful and also gave opportunities for extra credit for students that needed extra points.
Great Professor! Easy to interact with and I would recommend this course. Lots of resources at ASU for help with this course too!
Hard to understand.. Goes through materially quickly and tends to jump around subjects. Would not recommend!
Hard to understand.. Goes through materially quickly and tends to jump around subjects. Would not recommend!
He's relatively easy, and I'm not very good at math. He's gives extra credit ALL THE TIME and even gave extra credit the entire semester for attending class. however, attendance is mandatory. He also pushes back your homework due dates all the time! If math isn't your thing, take him. He's funny, easy and you'll pass.
He is a decent professor. The class is not very hard, but sometimes he makes it hard because his lectures can get confusing. He jumps around a lot. The online homework often has to teach you what is going on. Tests are easy and just like the reviews.
He goes through material fast. You get extra credit for being in class and he pushes back homework dates. he is hard to understand sometimes and he yells at students during class. Try to find a better teacher if not hes not absolutely horrible.
He's really funny, teaches the material kind of fast but taking down the notes helped a lot with the online assignments. He gives you lots of time on homework and gives extra credit often.
Truly the BEST math teacher I could have asked for during my first semester. All homework is on MyMathLab, aka a joke of an online homework system. He pushes back dates, explains things if you ask. He's boring sometimes but he's a nice, funny man who is just really kind. I found him to be a great teacher and he gives out extra credit occasionally!
He is a great professor. He is very kind and he is willing to help students. If you attend class, pay attention and do the online homework then you will do fine in his class. I am not a fan of math but he is a good teacher and I really enjoyed his class.
He is very nice, willing to offer help, and is always pushing back due dates. I took this class online so I only know him through helpful emails and announcements.
As long as you pay attention and do the homework (online) you'll do fine. He covers everything you need to know and will explain it as many times as it takes for you to get it. Professional and funny, takes roll religiously and utilizes class time up to the final minutes. Ample time to do HW, plus let us redo tests for some extra points.
Mandatory to attend class, especially since there is no required textbook used. In class lectures are quick and important for comprehension of material.Primarily lecture as method of learning.Allows for test redo for 10 xtra pts, ample time on homework, takes role, horrible at replying to emails. He was an okay teacher, pretty easy class and tests
Very nice guy who really does everything he can to help you get the best grade possible. Does attendance thru quizzes but they are super easy and you can work with other students so it's a guaranteed 100% if you just show up. The subject is pretty boring but he tries to make it fun. Just show up and do the homework and quizzes and you'll pass!
Easy tests, re-do's allowed for 10xtra points. Quizzes gauge attendance points. Very thick accent which can be difficult to understand, also gets very frustrated with students who don't immediately understand the material. Overall good guy and really easy class if you go to class.
I got an A in precalculus, and when I took Professor Williams for MAT142, I didn't understand anything. He can't explain the concepts in any way that makes sense, and he refused to email me, contact me, help me, or explain anything. Worst math experience I've ever had. His thick accent made it even harder to understand. I don't reccommend him.
Whoever says its hard to understand him, give me a break. His accent is by no means thick and hes an extremely intelligent man. Quizes are in groups and easy extra points! Plus, he lets you use a cheat sheet on tests. Uuummm, how much easier do you want? The grade just handed to you? If so, get out of college.
Like he said in the beginning of class, show up, pay attention, do the work and you will do fine. The tests are kind of hard, but you are allowed a cheat sheet so it compensates. He's a great teacher and his accent is by no means hard to understand. I can tell he wants you to understand it. Therefore, if you want a good grade, hes your man.
he's great, wants everyone to pass and understood that most of us did not want to take the class. he tries to simplify it as much as possible.
Great Class, Great Instructor. Gives adequate time for lessons given. Wants everyone to do well. In class assignments nearly everyday. Tries to be funny, which makes him even funnier. Show up and do the work and the class won't be a problem.
SUPER EASY. It was a pain to have to go to class, but there was no reason to do badly in this class. He literally tells you what to do for each procedure and gives you plenty of examples and practice problems to work on. Take with this professor, you won't regret it.
His course is not bad but he does seem to wonder off subject and not make clear sense of the material passed the first exam. Also, do not use the book to take his exams as his questions are in a different format than questions from the book. Do not follow the HW assignments to study as well. Listen in class and focus on his questions covered.
Unfortunately he does make attendance mandatory, but you definitely want to come to lectures to keep up anyway. He's a nice guy, really tries to explain every thing and give enough examples. He even allows you to use a cheat sheet on the exams.
Was not clear in his instructions, and did not teach. Had student aides wandering around, helping people for him. Professor would talk down to you if you were struggling to keep up or did not understand the material. Dropped because he didn't consider helping my father while he battled cancer a viable excuse to not come to class.
Class is rather simple. It's basically all online and you only have to do worksheets once a week. Professor Williams is from another country, so he has a slight accent but you can still understand him. He is really helpful if you ask him questions and is a really nice teacher.
This class is almost all computer based, it is not like high school. He is there to help you, however, there are no lectures. I waited for my summer semester my Senior year to take this class and without Prof. Williams I probably would've failed. If you go to class everyday and work hard he will help you. He's a very kind and helpful instructor.
Doesn't care if you pass or fail. Barley teaches the class.
No text book. All 110 Math classes are online but you have to go to Hayden or where ever where computer time is reserved for you to work. If you have the chance, as a freshmen, go to math 117. 110 causes problems if you're in WP Carey. Easy as hell. assignments due at the end of the semester. 1 test at the end of the semester. Take late in the day
Took it during Summer session (B) and it was easy. Eveything is online except for in class assignment which were once a week and we did them in groups. Also if you finished all the lesson before due date you can do the exams in class which made it even easier! Take it with him if you can !
This class is so unbelievably easy. Work on it for the 6 hours a week as it suggests, and you'll be done before your even half way through the semester. As for the professor, he is not much help. He is very difficult to understand because of his accent. But again, you do not interact with him very much.
He was not clear on what he wanted from us. He would make you feel awful if you were behind, or needed help. His students aids just wandered around the classroom, pretty much doing his work. Almost all of the work was online except for the problem sets, that were much harder than they needed to be.
Worst class I have ever taken. Extremely unclear when teaching and makes you feel incredibly stupid when you ask questions. Jumps around from problem to problem when giving lectures and goes super fast. Also very hard to understand because he is from India. Definitely avoid taking this professor if you can. Only good thing about this class is EC.
Word of advice: practice as much as you can and the tests will be a piece of cake. He was very gracious at the end of the semester as well. Would love to have him again for a math professor.
Worst teacher ever, even calling this guy a teacher is a compliment. He does not teach, or help. All the issues I had in this class were because of his incompetence. You have to constantly email him, and most of the time he will not respond. If he does, he misses the point of the question. How this man ever completed middle school is beyond me.
If you're horrible at math like me, you wont have any trouble with this class. Just go to tutoring if you have trouble and stay on top of the hw. He gives you three attemps on the final. the final is the only test that you take for this class. He is easy to get along with. If you go to his office hours make sure that you bring your laptop with you.
I am awful at math and took mat 142 online with him, and if I had any other professor i wouldnt have passed. TAKE HIM! he is understanding with the workload and if needed will extend due dates, and goes through each test to reward points back if they were close. Seriously, one of the most flexible caring professors at ASU.
Prof. Williams is extremely helpful and understanding and he cares about his students success. This is a tough class and was extremely discouraged because of disappointing test scores. Math online is not easy it takes a lot of motivation and work. Prof. Williams curved test scores and worked with all the students to help ensure their success.
Math online is intense and is time consuming. Get ready to complete those mastery points and take the unit quizzes, plus weekly homework as well. He is a nice professor and will take the time to help you if you ask for it. He wants you to succeed but he makes you work for it. He is fair but there is a lot of coursework.
I think Professor Williams is a great professor. He is actively involved in the class. I am irritated by other students and their complete lack of respect though. Especially in using discussion boards.
Believe me when I say that I am terrible at math but wouldn't have passed this class if I took any other teacher! As long as you complete the ALECKs math lab exercises and have a friend help you with the 4 (Problem set) homeworks, and try your absolute best on the tests. You will miraculously pass like me!
Doug was a great professor for Stats online. he was very helpful with the use of Piazza. Expect a lot of chapter work - sometimes two chapter hw, quizes and worksheets a week. completed this class in 7.5 weeks - very time-consuming and frustrating but worth it. completed with a B!
MUST TAKE THIS PROFESSOR if you suck at math! As long as you complete the homeworks to the best of your abilities and get 100% on all of them you can pass the class without having to take the exams. I took the exams, got 60% on all of them, but managed to get a B as my overall grade in the class! Take this professor!!
Have a life? Do NOT take class. The syllabus states the amount of hours you'll spend on homework, quizzes and worksheets. It is far more work than that. I had trouble working a job and tending to other classes. It's really a shame that even if you do all of the work, 2 tests can trash about 200+hrs of work. You don't have time to drop w/out a W.
Taking this online class was extremely disorganized. Due dates were confusing as well as the syllabus. The online program this professor uses for math questions was extremely fun. The discussion board he used was not what I was used to from my other classes and seemed disorganized as well. However whenever I asked questions I would get a response.
The class doesn't involve a lot of interaction with him, but he was very helpful
I don't recommend taking this class if you are taking other classes/work at all. 55 topics a week (each topic has 2-4+ questions depending on if you get it right the first time) and they get harder and harder towards the end of the course. The instructor responds to the questions, but doesn't answer them properly. I have never been so stressed.
I hadn't taken any math courses before this one for about 10 years but I have always done fairly well in math. After about the second week, this class online course was TERRIBLE. You pretty much teach yourself. The hours put into this course were OUTRAGEOUS! When I finished the course, it said I averaged about 23 hours a week!
Take his class online! Theres only one homework and one quiz every week, and mymathlab gives you endless amount of tries on homework. Also, the questions on the quiz are exactly the same as the homework, so you can keep the homework open in a different tab. The final was pretty hard though.
The online course is done through ALECKS exclusively. It does get progressively harder to earn the bonus for completing 55 topics a week. Expect to put a lot of hours into the course if you're wanting a high grade. It has been 25 years since I took a math class so I was scared but walked away feeling confident.
Very helpful on Piazza, instantaneous feedback. The online portion is all on the Pearson website. If you have problems with this type of learning environment don't take this class. Grades were curved in my class.
He is very helpful! he helps you learn what you need to learn. He let me take my final exam 3 weeks early and I did not have to continue coming back to class after that. He even gave me extra points on my final exam because "he could see I knew what I was doing". would definitely take him again.
the professor is okay, he does send out clear communications about weekly topic goals and when the tests are due. some assignments don't have a set due date of "due by end of class or X date" instead they're marked as "you should be able to by X objective" it causes a lot of confusion because its unclear
He answers questions almost immediately, which is pretty rare for professors of online classes. I didn't use the textbook at all, anything I needed help with was either in the homework itself or in the powerpoint posted on Blackboard. He gives you ample time to complete everything - I finished the course over a month early.
Williams wasn't too bad of a professor, but I had some issues and was offered no assistance from him. Other than that, the class itself wasn't too bad, but just know you'll be teaching yourself. You need the textbook to learn the concepts; quizzes after every chapter; two exams (midterm & final). You can work ahead/pace yourself which was nice
If you're terrible at math, TAKE HIM! He is the most caring/fair professor I've ever encountered at ASU! Quiz's are identical to the homework. Homework is heavy and can be difficult at times, but it really prepares you for the midterm and you have multiple tries. final is rough but he will consider curving. Utilize the tutors! Highly recommend him!
I took the Session A class. A homework and a quiz were due tues. & fri. One midterm for the first half of the chapters and a final for the other half. The hw can have up to 40 questions and quizzes are based off hw questions. The midterm was based off quiz questions and the final was in a different format, but still was related with the chapters.
So, math is not my strongest suit and taking an online STP 226 class, was a poor decision on my end. With that being said, the class was extremely fast-paced! I highly suggest taking it in person if you have to over online, but Professor Williams isn't bad at all. You just have to really stay on top of your assignments and tests!
I took this class, and I was thoroughly disappointed with the online platform used for homework: ALEKS. It is set up so you have to get 2-3 answers correct in a row to move forward. This took a crazy amount of time. I would make sure to find a math professor for MAT 142 that uses Pearson/MathXL instead of ALEKS.
Too tough of a grader. Lost points for simple things. If three questions are asked on one question, such as 1a. 1b. 1c. and 1a, 1b is correct, but 1c is wrong, you will be marked wrong for the whole question. Worksheets that are submitted for class, marked wrong for not have an "explanation," (Ex: I added all sides and got..) but correct answer.
This class will take you literally 2-5 hours daily (I think I skipped 3-4 days in the 6 weeks including weekends). The Aleks program does a good job teaching you, the lectures are very clear. Read the notes given with the lectures when doing written problems. Do NOT get behind in this class. Do the work and you should pass.
Professor Williams is a great teacher and the homework is a pretty simple walk through. Quizzes are a bit challenging but, if you can maintain through the word problems and homework. You'll be fine! He doesn't communicate to clear though per email which sort of got me in a bind. But hey! I passed
Professor Williams was pretty solid. There's a lot of homework in ALEKS and the written problems but, if you stay ahead you're good. The exams are challenging but, if you can maintain, you'll be good. Not the best communicator when it comes to emailing him. Takes a bit to get a response but, he'll ensure you make it out this class
This is a very easy online course but don't expect the professor to be much help at all. I had to use youtube to look up how to solve the problems because the power points and videos he provided were not helpful at all. Just be prepared to learn the material on your own. Exams questions are directly from the homework.
This online course was wildly difficult to navigate and set up with little help from the professor. Easy A as long as you do the assignments (multiple attempts per question) and you get a paper with notes for the only 2 tests. Professor was not helpful and would not answer questions on the board. Highly recommend this easy class, not the professor.
There wasn't much contact with the professor during the class, but he helped out a lot at the end with grades. If you deserve an A, he will get it for you. Do all the homeworks and quizzes and take notes. You get a page of notes and a formula flashcard on the exams. Only two exams (midterm and final).
Homework and "quiz" due every week with multiple attempts. Two tests, midterm and final which were hard but he curves grades at the end of the course as long as you do all the work. One page of notes allowed on exams but if you take it online you are recorded. Would recommend this course if your major is not math-heavy.
It is an oline class so there's lots to do especially to meet topic goals. ALso you have to attend but if you finish your topics you can finish the class whenever you want during the semester. Tests are easy and he will go through it after and mark is correct if he thinks the computer messed up or if you say you meant to write something else.
All the quizzes as well as homework assignments allowed multiple attempts on each problem for full credit except for the final, which ended up being curved anyway. Take stats online, its so much easier
Professor Williams was the nicest teacher I had this semester. I have always done terribly in Math and with him I got an A+. You will need to work a lot on the Aleks platform, but I found it great for working on your own speed, as long as you keep up with the weekly topic goals, and do them properly (not cheating), it's an easy A+!
Professor Williams really cared for students to finish the class on time and just do the work. He's a really nice guy when you need help. The system used to do homework/test are all online, but it's a lot of work! Don't slack on it and you will finish the class early. Overall this was probably the easiest math class I've ever taken.
I had to use youtube to figure out how to do most of this class. As i've noticed in most online math classes. Quizzes follow homework directly as do exams. You are allowed a full sheet of notes front and back, and a sheet of formulas provided by the professor. It was easy for me to get an A with all the resources at my disposal.
This class is challenging but the professor is generous. Grade went from a b+ to an a+ with the professors final curve. That is a HUGE curve. He is responsive on piazza, although most of the material you will need to learn on your own. Notes allowed on exams. Recommend this teacher ! Easiest math class online, and I have never gotten an A in math
Amazing class!
Online class was all 20 HW assignments, 3 "Quizzes" (Exam Reviews), and 3 Exams. Exams were weighted fairly heavily. Definitely have to make sure you are comfortable with the course content prior to taking the exams. The exam questions were a lot of vocabulary and fundamentals questions with about the same amount of actual problems to work
Its not listed but I took STP 231 with this professor. DO THE HOMEWORK, you do the homework and do well on the first exam, and the practice exams you will pass this class! the 2 other exams are pretty hard but as long as you do the homework and perfect it to the best of your ability you should pass! He will curve the grades at the end!
Math is a struggle for me and this class was no walk in the park. Be prepared to spend three hours a night doing homework. The majority of your grade is the midterm and final. Luckily the professor went back And gave partial credit. Overall he was fair and I feel like he truly cared that I passed his class. I recommend him.
Professor Douglas Williams is by far the most attentive to email than any other professor I have ever had. He answered every email I sent within no more than 8 hours. He will help you with anything you have questions on, and will continue to explain if you still don't get it. Lots of Homework, lectures aren't helpful, but grades generously.
This is not a difficult class if you read the chapters, and do the work. There is a heavy load of work as this is a short class. You have homework and a quiz every three days so don't allow yourself to fall behind, and don't wait last minute because it takes some time to complete. Maintain open communication with the professor and you'll be fine.
Overall, great professor! You have all the deadlines at the beginning of the semester, but don't fall behind. Your lowest homework and quiz score gets dropped so there is a safety net. Take advantage of the study guides. He is very understanding and wants you to succeed, just try your best!
Professor Williams is so nice! You can really tell that he cares about his students succeeding. Williams is a very generous grader and gives partial credit points if you almost get a problem right on a test. This really helped my grade. Just do the homework on time and you can easily get an A, even if math isn't your best subject!
Stay on top of your topic goals every week!!!!! How well you do in MAT117 depends on your time-management. Because you set your own pace, I was able to finish this class before Fall Break. Professor Williams is a great teacher! He responds to emails quickly and is super flexible and understanding. Utilize the study guides for every single test.
Doesn't teach at all. You literally sit on the computer snd complete math topics through Aleks the entire class. TRY ON THE FIRST KNOWLEDGE CHECK so that you don't have so many topics to complete throughout the semester.
This professor has taught at asu for 20yrs and cannot figure out ALEKS. He doesnt care about student success, and will not return emails timely. He is the laziest professor I have encountered. He wouldnt listen to class that he set Aleks up wrong until day of midterm, with no forgiveness. He blamed the program and said its complicated LOLOLOL
He uses the ALEKS system for his class and it is truly the best system for an online format to teach mathematical subjects to yourself. Honestly, if you stay on top of your topic goals and learn the material while doing it, you won't have much to worry about. Use the review section of the ALEKS system and you're golden for tests. Great class.
Entire course is on ALEKS and the only things that are not are the problem sets, they are loosely based on ALEKS. The professor does not tech or lecture at all. The entire class is just breakout rooms with students taking tests but even if you are not testing that day you still must attend. 25 ALEKS topics a week that you teach yourself.
The man assigns an enormous work load that he expects you to accomplish and he will offer you no assistance or advice in. He sets up his online program and checks out for the rest of the semester. He's regularly unavailable and rescheduling his office hours. The man can't even handle two hours a week of doing his job.

I took his course during the pandemic and I had a lot of issues going on outside of school. My grades were reflecting that in his course and he reached out to me before I even had the chance to ask for help. Super understanding and helpful. My time zone is only an hour off from his and he was pretty much always accessible through email.
Prof. Williams is so caring and, as long as you have a reason he will grant extensions. He also cracks the occasional joke, but not excessively. You can tell that he does care about his students and wants them to succeed. I love the tropical island zoom background!
The actual course is hard because I took it online and there is not really a tutorial on the math problems. But what made up for it is prof Williams. 10/10 great guy. Helps you no matter what and will work with you to pass you even at the end of the semester. Reply to email are super quick. I cant say one bad thing about him. Take his class!
Prof Williams was a major breath of fresh air after my last math professor. Most of the bad reviews seem to have a problem with the ALEKS system, just fyi, every MAT117 class uses it, there is no escape no matter who you take. Prof Williams was always helpful, gave lots of reminders, and was extremely encouraging and kind. Highly recommend.
I took this course online, it's a remidial math course for me and then I have to pass MAT119. Dr. Williams is a really nice professor, I completely agree with the other positive comments that he replies to emails immediately and is always there for you. He is not rude or sarcastic and let's you know exactly what you need to succeed.
A very nice guy and seemed to be understanding but I struggled heavily in his class whereas in another instructor's same level math class, I passed with flying colors. Not much help with Aleks math and felt unprepared for exams.
Easy A
The overall class was hard, but I believe that has more to do with ALEKs than the actual professor. If you stay on top of your assignments and weekly goal you can pass, but you have to work for it. Fall behind and you will struggle, however, Professor Williams was extremely helpful and sympathetic.
I took this for session B and there was so much work on ALEKS. The better you do on the knowledge test the less you have to do, take it seriously like you would a test. Me and 50 other students fell behind on assignments and Professor Williams put us all in the session C so we could complete our work and pass the class. Hes very helpful and cares.
This course is mostly based on ALEKS but Williams is an AWFUL instructor. The amount of times he has said I have over 1000 students was his go to answer for being absent, not grading assignments timely, and giving you one word answers. Maybe he shouldnt take on as many students, he clearly cant handle it. He is rude and doesnt care if you fail
I enjoyed this professor so much! He responds to his emails so quickly. He is very understanding and accommodating. I would absolutely choose him again!
Prof. Williams responds to email promptly and cares about his students success. He is easy to approach and can go to him for any questions. I felt very supported this quarter and would absolutely take him again.
Professor Williams was very understanding and responded to emails with compassion. This class has a heavy workload, but if you are dedicated, you can pass.
This class was a hefty one. I took this as a freshman and for all the future freshmen coming to ASU, please give your best shot towards the ALEKS exam required for entry to this class. If you fail, then you'll have more work to do. If you do well on the test, this class should be easy. There's an option to leave class early if you complete all work
Professor williams is a nice guy but I did not feel like he was very involved with the class. He sent out emails telling you what to do but it was mostly all done on Aleks. When you want to take the exam make sure you let him know ahead of time he takes a long time to respond. I one time had to wait over an hour for him to unlock the test.
Kind of strict and unorganized and expects a lot out of students that are only taking the class because we have too. I finished the class in October because you learn online through Alek. Use your time wisely so you can finish early!
A lot of homework and very difficult as it goes later in the semester.
Good professor, but TONS of homework (55-65 topics due per week). Need to email instructor to unlock exams, all homework and exams are done on ALEKS, which is annoying (paused in the middle of exam because I had music playing in the background on my computer and said to remove the person in my room and move my phone, also did not have near me).
This professor is very quick at communicating with you when they are needed. I have to say that this Math class is hard class in itself. Overall the course materials and Professor Douglas Williams has been a very smooth term.
If you want to take Mat 117 online with him, I would strongly advise against it unless it is literally the only class that you are going to take. This is an extremely time consuming, and content-heavy course with little to no help offered. Prepare to do 40-50 topics a week that you are essentially teaching yourself on a very finicky platform.
Everything is done on ALEKS. you have to put in the work in order to pass the course. 4 exams (Unit A, B, C, and D). A certain amount of topics are required to be met each week so I recommend working ahead. Every unit also has a problem set worksheet you have to turn in.
Professor Williams is great! He responds pretty quick when you have a question about the course. If you want to take a exam, just ask him a few days before you actually want to complete it so you can study. Exams may take 2-5 hours to complete but they aren't timed so you can always come back to where you left off. 10/10 Class.
Pretty easy course if you're willing to put in the time and effort. The majority of the class is taken through ALEKS including the exams. There are a decent amount of "topics" that need to be completed (My C session had roughly 310) and each week there is a Topic and Time goal. He responds quickly to emails, sometimes within minutes.
I took the summer stretch course and it was much easier than taking it in person. Finish the topic goals as soon as possible then you are basically done with the class. The only other assignments are Problem Sets (answers found on chegg) and the exams. He uses lockdown browser
He is slightly humorous and very caring. He responds to email very fast and usually leaves a smiley face. I really like this class because it is self paced. He has a handful of tutors that are usually walking around to ready help. He usually just starts the class with some introduction and then leaves us alone. Work is very easy.
The class work is all on ALEKs, so it's not like he does any teaching, however he is very attentive when it comes to answering questions and responding to emails. He always keeps grades up-to-date and allows flexibility in the course where we can take exams whenever we are ready. Very chill, non-stressful class
Honestly I really hated this class. The Aleks program is just insane. You must get 100% on every single homework problem(topic) or you cannot pass this class. There are over 300 topics. The workload for the 7.5 week course is nearly IMPOSSIBLE. If you have a job or are a full time student I would highly recommend taking this as a session C!!!!
Would you like to teach yourself without ANY participation from a professor? Would you like to spend 12 hours a week learning calculus without ANY help except tutoring center? How about memorizing 45 equations and calculus theory every few weeks? Take Mr Williams class! Youll find you waste your time preparing for exams that are set up for failure
The class was mostly a "teach yourself" kind of course so he was really only their to grade stuff.
It's hard to rate him because literally every MAT117 teacher doesn't teach. There's TA's but you teach yourself using ALEKS. He's nice, and gives extra points on exams if you show your work. Lots of homework but easy to get done. Exams are hard because they're not multiple choice and again, you teach yourself so it is hard to remember the material.
Professor Douglas wasn't very involved in MAT117 because the class is all based on an online program, but he responded to emails quickly if you needed any additional info, and he was always supportive of his students - the class was a little annoying though
Honestly I think I talked to Professor Williams about 3 times during the whole course. He is nice and pretty funny, but definitely seemed very stressed in some interactions I had with him. This class went really well for me and I actually finished a few weeks early, but I know a lot of my peers are failing or barely passing.
Professor generally had little interest in students progression, and was not accommodating. He served more as an observer and a disciplinary, and did not ever teach in his class.
rude and unsupportive. I have never been disrespected by a prof the way he disrespected me- I am not going into detail but do not expect to do anything extra for you. He ends every email with a smiley face and it is very condescending. I never felt supported in his class at all. I am retaking this course with a supportive teacher and have an A.
The class was very difficult and if you're a person who needs to see videos in order to solve the math problems, you may find this challenging. It only shows you the solution so you will need to teach yourself or search for video tutorials yourself. There are 4 heavy exams - no notes, timed 50 mins to 1hr, video & audio recorded via honorlock.
This class is easy as long as you know how to pace yourself. It's entirely self-taught, but help is there if needed. About 20 topics per week, but most can be finished in 10 minutes. Tests are graded on a curve, but are in-class and use lockdown browser.
Professor Douglas Williams is a wonderful professor! I have never came by a professor who responds in the manner of time like he does. I appreciate that he is very reliable and also a kind professor as well
Dr. W is active with the online class, sending out announcements on the regular. He checks your exams on ALEKS, adding points where he can. He's not going to take a BS excuse, but is considerate if you have a legit issue. He responds promptly to emails. His expectation are clear and consistent. I wish he taught precalc so I could take it with him.
This professor was very responsive to emails and did adjust all test and quiz grades to benefit the students. I appreciate his willingness to give an extension with a small penalty on test. This was super helpful as I had 2 unexpected surgeries during this class and the extensions allowed me to still do well in the class.
Dr. Williams is very rude and makes you feel horrible if you even attempt to ask for an extension due to a medical situation. He does not follow accommodations given to him by SAILS and is so critical if he doesn't see you have done 135 hours in this class, but yet doesn't take the time to think about if people are taking other classes.
He is ok. Class is self taught. Attendance is mandatory (IA's take attendance at start and end of class and you have to complete a quiz for attendance as well). Wouldn't take again tbh. If you are bad at math and need a teacher to actually teach it, this isn't the class for you. 2/5 tbh.
The professor was very uninvolved when it came to class, but he is still very nice. All work is done on your own online, yet you are still required to go to class, with very strict attendance. The math you do in this class doesn't get much higher than algebra II. The reviews he gives for the tests are exactly what you will see on the test.
All MAT 117 classes are a joke. They are all online through ALEKS.
Professor Williams does a good job explaining things.
He is nice himself but the class is not run well material is not taught.
The class involves you working online on ALEKS and the website itself can sometimes be annoying with its way of grading. He offered in class lectures but if you struggle with time management and are working on homework in class it can be hard to follow along. He goes over the study guides in class as well and will offer to answer any questions.
Would not let me retake a pratice quiz to boost my grade. I needed 3% to pass the class and emailed him politely explaining the situation and was given a "sorry hope you have enough points to pass" and brushed off. Terrible professor to say the least and does not care about his students. Never teaches and you sit in class to do work on a computer.
I am unsure why this class is taught as an in person class when everything is online. The ALEKS system used is terrible. I find it insane that we are expected to learn like 60 topics per unit but the test is only 10 question. So you have to learn all just in case it is on the test. Also professor is rude and does not follow SAILS accommodation.
He is kind, but can be harsh to students who don't put the basic effort into the course, which is understandable. People don't understand that it's not the professor that chooses to do ALEKS and it's not their fault it's structured that way, its ASUs fault, overall he's really great, understanding, and will help you if you need it, just ask.
It's an online class, even though you're in person, you still do all the work on the computer. Overall, it's an easy class. Think of it like high school algebra. The only way to fail is by not doing the work or not showing up for the test. You also have the opportunity to finish the class early.
Professor is helpful, but ALEKS system makes the class tough. unstuckstudy helped with study prep. Overall a decent course if you stay on top of the work.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE DOUGLAS WILLIAMS. He is the bane of my existence. He lost my quiz and gave me a 0 because of it. He gives quizzes after each class. He is so rude and has the most impossible accent to understand. This is my warning.
Great teacher who actually cares how you do in the class!
I absolutely do not recommend this class. It was so difficult and he seemed like he had little care for his students. I struggled in this class so much. It was so difficult for no reason. At this point I was basically just teaching myself because I would come out of his class more confused then when I came in.
Terrible class. Avoidant teacher. Super hard. ASU DO BETTER!! Actually insane how many people do not pass MAT 117.
A great professor overall really does care about your grade. I believe he will match your effort, meaning however much work you put in he will give back to you.
Teacher is difficult to understand if you come in with zero math background. TA's in the class are very helpful and have no issue explaining topics to you. Tests are structured the exact same as the reviews so scoring high is very accessible.
I explained prior that i have dyscalcuia, failed other maths & required accommodations. While waiting for SAILS to respond he replies "hopefully that doesnt happen again." ALEKS is impossible if youre not good at math. He provides no instructional videos. Youre not allowed to use your own calculator. Lack of empathy. This course is terrible.
Douglas Williams was a great professor to me. He constantly announced upcoming due dates and messaged if he noticed you were struggling. He also graded scratch paper and gave additional credit on quizes where applicable.
