He was kind of rude in class, but outside of class he was a really nice guy. Also his weekly quizzes weren't that difficult. You do need to study relatively hard for his midterm and final tests though. Still, the final paper is nearly impossible to get anything less than an A on and it's a major part of your grade!
Pretty traditional teacher. Talks about the subject, gives homework about it, and then the tests are basically the same as the homework problems.
he is great he will help you all you need and if u fail the 1st two test and do good on the last one he will drop the 1st to he is funny to you have to work in the class but not that much take notes and you will do fine i got a a and never even bought a book
Great teacher! Knows what he is talking about. Boring lectures, but take notes because what he says is exactly what is on the test. He shows you how to all the problems that you need to know. Don't use book that often, but I suggest glancing at the review sections and quizzes before test. Strange sense of humor, but he is a cool guy!
Very clear on what he is saying. He explains everything very clearly so that students will be able to understand it the first time around without confusing them. He allows for extra credit opportunities to allow you to raise your grade if ever needed.
I absolutely LOVED him! If he taught something other than econ I would def. take the class. He makes lectures fun and interesting. Also he is pretty understanding and helpful. Be sure to take notes and do the readings, they help a lot on quizes and tests. I like Economics a little bit more now that I've had him.
Great Teacher! He really got me interested in the subject. His class where easy to follow and you knew exactly what was expected of you showed up to class, paid attention, and did the reading. Very easy to get along and very helpful when you need it. I would totally recommend him! I am actually taking for Macro next semester.
He wasn't the nicest guy. Not very helpful and he makes you feel stupid if you ask questions. His tests are hard and so is his homework.
While Mattson can appear cynical and sarcastic, he is the most knowledgable professor I have had thus far. He is clear in his teachings and always willing to help you. His class is hilarious with a twisted sense of humor, and if you're willing to put in some effort, I would take it. Very good Professor.
Best professor I've had, which I have had many. He is extremely knowledgeable in his field and is very funny. His humor as people say is quite odd, but it makes the atmosphere not as uptight. His tests are from the notes and little on the book, it is recommended to go to class everyday. If you need help just go to him, he's easy to talk to. 5/5
Somewhat of a hard course. He has a sick sense of humor, and always looks stern and crabby, which makes him seem hard to approach for help and questions. He's not very thorough in lectures, and doesn't clarify difficult concepts.
Great teacher. He made class fun and interesting. This class has me debating to switch my major to economics. Exams are not to difficult with a little bit of studying.
Great teacher! He has a very dry sense of humor that some people dont like. Weekly quizes are hard, make sure you read the book! It makes a huge difference even looking over vocab before a quiz. Overall not a hard class!
Drew Mattson was a great teacher. He helped me understand the basics on economics, and really just helps you as students. I would recommend him for every student. I never really used my text book, i still got an A. aslong as you take notes and do the homework you should get a good grade. he was the teacher i have ever has at ARCC!
This guy was awesome! Super sarcastic too :) very clear. Not too hard to pass, just pay attention, take notes, and read the book.
Mattson :) He's hilarious. Very helpful. Took his class while doing PSEO & it was my favorite even compared to my high school classes. The book is a huge help, read it. He has a couple participation point activities with partners so make sure to attend class.
Class Lectures are easy to follow, you have to read very carefully if you want to get how to do the homework. funny guy, willing to meet up to help you with homework. only complaints on his macro class is that team problems are difficult and not shown how to do in class or in book and dont know what to study for on the multiple choice q's on tests.
I don't understand why people say he's the greatest professor he's ever had..!? I took his intro to econ class online & I hated it. I'm so glad it's done in a few days. If you get a bad grade, he doesn't really explain why. When you ask, he basically says because you did the problem wrong. Overall very bad! Don't take his class.
Drew is a great teacher. In his lectures, he uses a lot of dry sarcasm- it becomes hard to know if he is being serious or not. With that being said, that makes the class difficult. He tries to explain things well. If you do not understand the lectures, he provides help outside the classroom. I recommend him.
The class is pretty easy. There is a bot of homework every week. He gives a ton of extra credit. He has a very dry seance of humor but is incredibly funny. Favorite class of the semester.
He is a funny guy. I laughed a lot during his class but it is pretty hard. He has a lot of extra credit opportunities though that can help your grade dramatically. It was not a terrible class and he lets you know what to study for the exam.
He apparently is great in person, but I hate his online class. I take all my classes online and his is the only one I have trouble with. He basically just says you did it wrong for an explanation, and he hasn't handed out any extra credit. Apparently, go for the class but don't do it online!!
Unapproachable and very disrespectful towards students. Tests are hard and barely goes over the tests. Gives harsh sarcasm to those who need help with the subject matter
I took this online. I had good tests and bad test. I had good assignments and bad assignments. Once I finally asked for help he was there to check up on my work. But I always felt that he thought I was stupid or doing something wrong constantly. The reading is very easy to understand and essential to the class, but the quizzes are slightly puzzling
He is a good teacher. He explains things clearly and is there to help you. He might seem scary at first but he is actually really nice. He has a somewhat creepy sense of humor.
He has a very dry sense of humor, but it is hilarious. He seems tough and cold, but he is actually a cool guy. Really knows his stuff about Economics. Tests are focused on the short answeressay questions. Always go to his lectures because he breaks down the text book and most of the questions on his tests relate to his lectures.
He does not explain the criteria for what he wants graded at all. His class is a load of bull. He tells you to take a test, but the test will have barely anything to deal with what you just read about, and his way of explaining what to do is not present. You basically have to guess and pray that what you did is correct. Don't ever take him.
One of the hardest classes I have taken. Drew is very clear with what he wants on his tests and what he wants in the homework assignments. Show up, Do your homework and you should be fine. Don't take his class too light though or you will fail.
He understands that the material is hard and helps you untill you get it. Reading the textbook is a tremendous idea but if you don't you'll likely be fine.
Had him for an online class. This required a lot of assignments in order to demonstrate competence. The assignments were time consuming and it took a couple assignments in order to figure out what he wanted. But after I figured it out, he dropping A's and B's. Hated the class but atleast it was bearable.
I took his Econ1100 class fairly simple and he is very clear what he wants done. He is a fair grader. (put some work into assignments) There is one weekly problem per week and a quiz as well generally. There is one 5 page paper in the class. Over all good class and on a very important subject
Drew has a dark sense of humor, but he's really funny. He likes to make jokes at Trump's expense. He seems hard and cold on the outside but if you ask him for individual help, he explains it well. The tests are largely based on the essay questions (80% of it), so make sure you can explain the concepts well.
Mattson is THE hardest grade Ive ever encountered. He is really picky and specific on WORD CHOICE when grading free response questions. Exams have multiple choice questions that are 20% of your grade while the free response is 80%... good luck if you want 100% on the response part. Additionally, he jokes but does not take others in consideration.
I wouldn't recommend taking his class. It was a very hard class and I worked very hard but only received a B when I am an A student. Do you work and the quizzes are the hardest part.
I would not recommend taking this course online from Mattson to anyone. He was inconsistent with grading and offered little to no help with questions. Much of what was read in the textbook had no correlation to the heavily weighted quizzes, and I truly felt like I didn't learn/retain anything from this online course. (Thank goodness it's over).
He has a dark sense of humor and you'll notice after the first day even, but he is a genuine guy, don't be afraid to come to his office to get help or have him doublecheck anything. Gives plenty of extra credit. 80% of the exams are free response, 20% multiple choice, just means you have to understand and explain concepts. Overall, great professor!
He is a pretty tough grader but offered so much extra credit I can't really complain. Almost every week we had a quiz and an assignment. He has a super dry and sarcastic sense of humor which some may enjoy but, personally it made him a little hard to approach.
I would actually give him a 2.5. Really tough at grading-you say one thing wrong and he docs you quite a lot on a question. However, he is good at getting his grading done at a decent time. There's a big position paper and final each worth 20% of your final grade. Just do the readings he gives you and work hard on the paper and you should pass.
the worst professor i have ever taken. i would rate him a negative 5 if i could.
The literal worst ever
very fun class!
He is easily accessed outside of class and always ready to help. His assignments are fairly easy as long as you take notes in class, read the book and pay attention in class. He is super nice and like to make jokes in class. Super great teacher that really inspired me to learn economics.
Drew is an alright professor but his humor is hilarious. His lectures can be hit or miss. They are sometimes not clear and irrelevant to what is on the exam. The most helpful part of this course is the assignments and team/practice problems. By the final, you should have developed a sense of how to solve an economic issue. Also: go to his office.
I took this class online and hated it. The readings were long and boring. Although the questions on the test generally came exactly from the reading, they were often misleading and worded weird. The final paper is worth over 100 points - with only 5 points coming from the actual paper. It wasn't the worst class ever, but it definitely wasn't good.
Projects are all well explained. He knows what he's talking about. Light homework load, if you do your part, it's an easy A or high B in the class. Very understanding of situations, and is on your side when you need to explain something. I would highly recommend him.
One of my best Professor's I've ever had the privilege to work with, always ready to help and explains what he wants to see in your assignments!
I'm not a big fan of him. He made jokes at students expense, and he thinks he's hilarious. Easy A if you show up to class and listen. Do the extra credit, it adds up! And don't skip the Friday mini assignments. They're typically easy, so no use in losing points over it.
Drew Mattson writes all of his course material, and provides them with the course at no extra fee. This class is not an easy A, but if you work hard and apply yourself, he will respect you and provide the proper help when needed.
He's not very nice. I would recommend not answering any questions unless you are 1000% sure that you are correct because he will mock you in front of the class if you are not correct or sometimes even if you are. You have to overexplain everything in the class, but Mattson does not believe in the sentiment himself as he does not. Don't recommend.
Professor Mattson is a difficult grader. He expects you to explain everything in EXCRUCIATING detail, however he himself does not explain anything. He will put questions on the quizzes that you have not learned yet. I would not ask a question unless you for sure know the answer, even then I would be wary.
He sucks! He expects you to be detailed and he doesnt make any sense what so ever! Thinks he is funny but is not at all! Jokes about his dead mom. And dont answer any questions unless you want to get made fun of. One of the worst professors in history.
I asked him for help and his comment was well that sucks. He didn't care to help me or explain things more clearly to me. He Sucks!!!
I stopped showing up to classes on Mon+Wed b/c I ended up teaching myself how to do the Friday assignments. He doesn't take attendance BUT go on FRIDAYS team projects. After teaching myself (from textbook), I started passing. I like how he grades the exams, if you do bad on any of the 3 exams, he disregards them if u do better on FINAL, vice versa
Some lectures for me personally were hard to follow. He moves pretty quick and he uses a lot of abbreviations when writing which can make notes kind of confusing when trying to study. There are group problems every Friday that definitely help you better understand the chapter, plus they're free points. He also offers a lot of easy extra credit.
I was a happy person until I took his class. I had hopes and dreams, now I have breakdowns. Do not recommend.
Professor Mattson is a pretty good choice for a Macroeconomics class. The class at first may appear to be very tough, but if you put the work in, you will do fine. I wasn't a huge fan of the tests mainly because they seemed a little unfair sometimes (some had a few minor errors). Extra Credit is offered and that helps immensely.
Professor Mattson is an amazing teacher with clear guidelines and expectations. He uploads all the readings (which the quizzes are based off), gives homework which is similar to the test, and offers lots of extra credit. I was able to reach him outside of class easily. As long as you put the effort and work into his class you will pass easily!
Professor Mattson I respect even though there's a lot of work that needs to be put into this class from the student end. Overall his lecture points are clear with interesting examples that makes it relatively easy to follow. Be aware though that there is a lot of typing done in the online version whether its assignments or the final position paper.
I took the online version, which I do not recommend. The first month I got horrible grades because his grading expectations were not clear. No textbook and the readings are not helpful. The paper is easy and requires not much effort. The exams are written so make sure you explain in detail. All in all, explain your thought process.
He is very clear on what he expects from each student and is a fair grader. The assignments and position paper are graded quite generously, but the tests were more difficult. The in-person quizzes and tests are very difficult, but his online tests are much easier. Although he can be condescending and odd at times, he is a good professor overall.
Professor Mattson has a deep knowledge base on economics. His lectures can be dry, and he has no patience for excuses, but he provides opportunities for extra credit, and the homework schedule is manageable. There's usually one essay style assignment due each week, as well as group problems/review weekly. Ask questions at office hours for success
the class consists of reading some stuff and do an assignment every Sunday. The tests are just long assignments, there are timed quizzes, and you got to write an essay about a topic. Tbh I just watched the crash economics course on Youtube. The class was not very interesting or engaging, but I guess it is because I already hate economics.
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He does not answer emails and does not answer questions during office hours. He is not helpful with assignments during office hours or in class. He likes to make fun of you and will put you down to make himself seem better. His quizs have nothing to do with what you have learned in class or the book.
On test days I had the thought that I would rather have my car blow up than attend. I cried at least three times during his lectures because he directly made me feel stupid. I am a straight A student and have never failed a test. I failed all of the tests, and homework but still ended with an A. Also, the textbook had spelling and formula errors...
This class was the hardest class I've ever taken. Luckily I showed improvement over the semester.
I showed up to like five lectures at most and passed. Theres homework/quizzes due every Friday. You can teach yourself and youll pass, thats what I did. Professor is kinda boring but hes available every Friday if you have questions. I never went to one though.
Dont ask him questions. Hell just tell you to look in the textbook. I dropped his class right before the semester ended because he wasnt helpful when I needed it. Also, he calls tests, exams and will act like he doesnt know what youre talking about if you call it a test instead. Made kind of rude jokes and undermines his students A LOT.
This was an extremely difficult class. Lectures were no help at all. However, the readings were helpful and was probably the only reason I did well. If you take this class, be prepared to do a lot of learning yourself. I do like that he is available for questions frequently. Easy grader on papers and assignments. The quizzes were very difficult.
Many people don't like him, but I do. I don't have any zoom settings so it is mostly me teaching myself through his online PDFs. I do think that he can be a tough grader, but overall he is very helpful. Wheneve I come across a question he always sends me an email and helps me. He will normally give me the answer when I email. ASK HIM FOR HELP!!
I enjoyed this course. There is a lot of bigger assignments, you have to read a longer paper and then answer a 3 question in paper format with explanations. Those questions do have sub-questions. It only takes an hour to complete and the reading is not that bad. I recommend attending the lectures. sometimes he will give you all the answers.
This class wasn't too hard. There are weekly quizzes which were difficult, but the weekly assignments were easy. Exams weren't too hard. There was a short paper due at the end of the semester. He's a fair grader and overall I'd say the class is an easy A.
Professor Mattson was fine, you have to work in his class. His readings sometimes did not really correlate with the work he gave out. He is a tough grader and your grade will reflect on how much you worked in that class.
Took this Macro class online over Summer, so it was a lot to learn in one month (not recommended). The class was 6 pieces of homework and 3 tests, so light on the work but the textbook wasn't great, (McGraw Hill-Macroeconomics 22nd). However, Prof Mattson made sure he had office hours during tests and days when homework was due. Friendly & helpful.
Definitely wouldnt take this class ever again, he grades unfairly and makes weird inappropriate comments/jokes. He is mean and makes snarky comments to students. His lectures make no sense all he does is ramble.
This professor was extremely hard with grading criteria. If you do not have everything he wants you to have in your homework, you get a 0%. I also once joined his office hours and he basically was silent the entire time as it was just me asking questions and him giving a simple one worded answer with no explanation. Extremely hard class, bad prof.
He is very discreet on what is on the quizzes and it is NOT easy to understand through the lectures. He is sassy when people don't answer his questions. A LOT of his course work is based on opinions and what you think. The quizzes are SUPER hard and this whole class is so hard. DO NOT take this with him because it is a HARD class for an intro class
I do not recommend Prof. Matson, During the semester I had plenty of bumps and tried to reach out for additional help, each time. would reach out the response was always similar to "read the notes again". This was a difficult response as I had already looked through the notes that weren't helpful. I reached out and got no additional help.
This professor expects you to answer your homework questions with an immense amount of detail and gives you zero feedback on your assignments. If you're taking this class online, expect to get no help understanding the material unless you're free during his zoom hours. There are no lectures to watch or read either. He doesn't seem to care.
If you can take anyone but Mattson, I highly encourage you to do so!!!! He doesn't respect his students in the least and your grade is based ENTIRELY on some barely explained, confusingly worded assignments and four exams. The key to answering the questions is either hidden in the textbook or something he assumes you to know. It's horrendous.
No lectures, but you are expected to read the textbook. I slacked bad in this class and only read the first two chapters, but still got an A. He has meeting availability and allowed me to double check my assignment and exam answers with him before submitting. Basically gave me the answers if I got any wrong. Teacher is fine but subject isn't easy.
He doesn't know how to teach.
1 minute late to class? He gives you a death glare. Lots of homework. Lots of team problems that he doesn't help explain.
There's lots of reading. The quizzes had some questions that were way more complex than the textbook & felt impossible. Ask for help with assignments in office hours and write down what he says. Don't leave until he's satisfied. For the quizzes, watch crash courses. If you don't get the concept, good luck. He's nice, explains well, & replies fast.
His quizzes were nearly impossible. The explanation he gave for the right answers was beyond an intro course and not in the textbook. Go to his office hours for assignments and exams, he explains well and basically gives you the answers. He replied fast and knew A LOT of complexities (which puts his intro students at a disadvantage imo). Nice guy.
This professor expected you to do the above and beyond. Was really frustrating to work with.
Prof. Mattson leaves all the learning to you. He's hardly accessible outside of class, and provides no helpful feedback whatsoever. Read the textbook, but don't expect anything from it on the test. Tests are inconveniently scheduled (10am-4pm) and he's not very sympathetic to the reasons one may take an online course. Be ready to fend for yourself.
Dr. Mattson is a good professor, but for an introductory course this class was fairly challenging. You were expected to firmly understand concepts, and he appeared annoyed if you asked questions on material already covered. However, I've enjoyed his class so far and feel as though I've learned a lot about economics!
If you want to be happy do not take this class I think I cried everyday.
Don't recommend. You can't ask him any questions because he will tell you that you should know it. Boring lectures. Textbook only helped me so much. I have no idea how I passed. I feel like everything had to be difficult with him. You'll find yourself much happier if you take someone else.
I quite liked Prof. Mattson's course, I took his ECON 1100 in my first year of PSEO and I found the class pretty easy, as long as you take notes, do the weekly assigned homework, and participate in group work, some of the things I didn't like is that he would show up to lectures late, and the quizzes and tests were copied off of homework
Made a girl cry on the first day, kicked her out because her phone wasn't on silent. Group quizzes were fairly easily, but lectures were very difficult. He didn't use slides very often, so he usually rambled on about nothing for an hour and then expected you to know everything. I passed but he's definitely a tenured prof waiting for retirement.
I took Professor Mattson Econ coarse number of years ago, but i find myself referring back to the 3 econ classes I took, in understanding the economic world we live in daily. Professor Mattson is an awesome professor. Be prepared to be challenged!
