The best class I have ever taken! Drew is hilarious and taught me so much about our US History. He made the class a blast. He expects you to study if you want to pass. The class was so interesting you really wanted to learn. I highly recommend this instructor! I use to hate US History classes before, Now I am thinking about making it my major.
Awesome guy. He teaches at Chico State, too. Class was extremely well organized, making it much easier to get a good grade if you wanted to. You'll learn a lot and a lot you wouldn't learn everywhere. It seems he pieces most of his lecture material together himself. He's hilarious and he's willing to pretty much give you the answers on tests.
Take this class!!!! It was amazing! He's a great teacher
Great guy, easy class, no book, no papers. Just reading assignments with like 5 questions to answer. He's very sarcastic. Pretty much hilarious!!
funny guy. Def take this class, its easy but interesting and you learn alot.
down to earth and keeps your intrest and attention from beginning to end
Bad ass teacher!
Powerpoints were engaging and easy to understand. He provided the general gist of historical events which made the class more engaging. Daily (open) quizzes seemed to be arbitrarily graded, so watch out there. Included music of the time period which made class more fun. Overall, great class. Received an A.
Professor is too arrogant and portrays a holier than though attitude.
I was dreading taking a History course this semester, but Drew made this class fun and interesting. I found myself laughing every day at all the commentary he provided during his lecture. I would recommend him to anyone. No text book, but there is some reading on black board. Tests are relatively easy. Attendance is definitely mandatory!
Great teacher. I would take this class again just because it was a great time. And I love history and how he teaches it. One of the few classes I look FWD to going to.
Two thumbs way up!!
This guy is AWSOME!!!! Coolest teacher EVER!!!! He's really chill. You can call him "dude", and he'll respond, and he's hillareous! I didn't go one day in that class without laughing. He should be a comedian! He's funny, but also gets the job done, and he's really passionate. I was just mad, 'cuz we fell behind a little, but it was worth it!
easy but horrible
he will tell you not to buy the book on the 1st day of class. U must attend or he will drop u. TAKE NOTES, or you won't learn anything! he dose make the notes available on college website, but dont rely on them they are VAGUE. MUST Be good with writing or u will fail. 4 units, 4 tests, 4 papers, 30 daily quizes (thats how he takes roll) good luck!
He rude to student and talk about radio too much. not a good teacher.
Very interesting class with a funny teacher. If history bores you, take this class. My only complaint is that the papers were really annoying. Being a good writer is mandatory.
He's a really cool teacher just hard at grading!I understand his lectures. you just have to pay attention to what he says and be a good note taker! :)
Drew is one of the many Butte College instructors who suffer from part-timers disease. Drew puts forth minimal effort in his courses, and he seems disinterested in whether or not his students learn anything. His class is easy to those who are proficient at writing, but I didn't really learn much. Even though I got an A, I would not recommend Drew.
Drew is great! I loved this class. He's the only teacher that has ever made me interested in US history, it's always been my worst subject. I found him to be quite helpful and I liked his teaching style. TAKE NOTES and show up everyday is all the advice i can give. Good instructor, I learned a lot.
You only have to write a rough draft for the 1st paper. He said the rough draft wouldn't effect your grade but what he did fail to mention was that if you don't write the rough draft he will take 66% off of your final draft...Doesn't make sense to me! Attendance is mandatory, no book, online tests, powerpoint lectures. Hard grading on papers.
Great material, bad teacher. Friendly during lectures, rude any other time. Very unapproachable. 18 writing assigns, only grades 8 (esp. hard on grammar). They're very time consuming too. Tests are made to fail, questions are int. tricky, and can't see wrong answers w/o apt. Complains constantly about being part-time teacher. Keep looking!
Just a horrible teacher! The kind of guy who enjoys seeing his students fail. Has a know-it-all, superior attitude. In reality he's a below-average, part-time, history teacher. It's too bad there's teachers like him. Can't express enough how bad Drew is. I regret taking Drew, and would recommend you find another teacher. Just bad!!
I thought Drew was a great instructor. He made history exciting; it was like hearing a story every class. There is a decent amount of writing but the school has writing requirements for classes like this and it helps you prepare for the tests. No textbook, but primary source readings are interesting and relevant. I would recommend him to a friend.
Great guy. No textbook. Writing assignments are easy if you go to his office hours for help. All exams are online (except the final). If you go to office hours you can view your wrong answers. He loves history - that's for sure. Highly recommend the class.
Awesome. Highly recommended. Drew was very helpful. Visits to office hours made my grade go up from a low C to a high B. The writing assignment are like a portfolio of work. You get to choose things for him to grade and he chooses some things to grade. The class was easy as long as you listen, ask questions and visit office if you need help.
Hey constantly complains about being a part time teacher and clearly lets it affect his teaching. Also, pretty much boasts about how many people have failedbeen close to failing. Drew's writing assignments are extremely specific and difficult to get a good grade on. Finally, some of the test questions are extremely deceptive. Don't take him.
Drew is one of the best teachers I've ever had! Everyone is saying the writing assignments are hard, which they are if you don't pay attention. In class he clearly states what he wants on the assignment and gives examples. His lectures are really helpful for someone like me who dislikes history, he makes it fun! I would totally recommend him 100%
Drew's a good teacher. His class is very straightforward, and he lets you know exactly what he expects from you. There is no homework, but there is one paper due for each test (4 total) The papers themselves are not difficult, but he is VERY specific in what he is looking for. Ask for help before you turn it in! Lectures are interesting.
Fun teacher. I would take his class again.
Teaches with a LOT of bias towards his views. Can turn the class almost into a political science class. Can be very interesting to listen to. Gives long writing assignments that must be written how he likes them, not necessarily how you were taught to write. But, he does make it clear what he wants. Gives online tests, but you only have 20 - 30 min
Teaches with a lot of bias towards his personal views. He can be very entertaining to listen to, and can be funny, but will push his views in class very strongly. Also makes you write essays in the way he wants them written, not necessarily the way you have been taught. Will help if you ask for it. Overall grade: C-
Our 1st exam was online and he wants to make sure you don't cheat so he gave us 50 questions with 25minutes to complete it. I thought the test was some what easy but you have to read really fast to get through all of it. Also he was a high school English teacher so he seems to act highly of himself and grades very hard on essays. Regret taking him
There is no book for this class. The writing assignment is hard, you have to do it exactly to his liking. Asking for help is just as hard as the writing assignment. Test are timed and are difficult to answer. I would not recommend. But lectures are great!
This class was the most hardest class i ever took. If your not very good with history to being with like me i was clueless the whole semester he grades super hard. There are four units which there is 4-5 writing assignments he is very bias with what you say on them. Exams 50 Q's 25 Min. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone he is super picky.
No textbook, which is nice, but don't think that means you won't have material to read. Tests are manageable if you use the study guide, but the writing assignments are almost impossible. It seems like you have to ask him for help in order to get a decent grade. No matter how much you feel you followed the prompt, he will most likely wont agree.
WAS DIFFICULT AT FIRST, BUT AFTER SPEAKING, WE BOTH BECAME MORE CLEAR OF ONE ANOTHER. HIS EXAMS ARE A BIG DEAL BECAUSE IT GOES TOWARD YOUR OVERALL GRADE FOR THE CLASS. THERE ARE DAILY QUICK WRITES, SO IF YOU DON'T SHOW, YOU LOSE 10 POINTS. I REALLY LIKE HIM, HE IS FUNNY AND AN AWESOME DUDE. COME TO CLASS, TAKE NOTES, READ THE SOURCES, YOU WILL PASS
Drew constantly talks about his radio show, which has nothing to do with class. I will say that this guy does know what he's talking about though. He adds things in his lectures which really bring it to life. His assignments are difficult and tedious. No textbook though. TL;DR Hard grader, good lectures, long hw assignments
First day of class it's "only half of you will pass" and constant talks of you will all probably fail or quit. Half do quit and the other half are fighting just to pass. Writing Assignments are RIDICULOUS. Test questions are misleading (enjoy all the misspellings). All A's in every other class and I barely got a C with him. Save yourself!
Don't take his class. Petty grader and doesn't know how to grade properly. Will mark off points for the smallest things, and those points will add up. I am really good at History, I have gotten Bs in other classes that are harder than his. You can answer his questions and simply and he will always find something small critique
Not your typical teacher.. However I learned more in his history 8 class than my entire school carrer. He teaches THE REAL HISTORY.. Not the history we have all been lead to believe. He does get off track sometimes.. But his passion is history.. And you can tell. His other history course isn't on my ED plan.. But I'm going to pay for it myself.
There sure are alot of haters on here. Drew warned us that the class and writing was difficult on the first day. He also told us to ask for help. I failed the first writing assignment. On all the other writing assignments I asked for help and he worked wih me and I got B's. I assume most of the haters never asked for help. Their fault, not his.
Always double check your writing assignments
I can see where people think his assignments are hard, but that's college. After I got a 'D' on the rough draft, I asked for help on the other writing assignments and never got less than a 'B.' Drew was easy to work with and I learned more about U.S. History than I ever have before. I liked the class so much, I plan on taking History 8 with him.
He is an amazing funny person, However, his wife is an English teacher and pretty sure she grades all the writing assignments. No matter what you are not going to get a god grade on his paper. I am passed honors English and have nothing less than 100 percent on my English papers his, no 48 max out of 100
Class is very interesting because he cares about history, he just doesn't care about you(the student.) He has shifty exam questions so if memorizing all the little details isn't your thing, you're effed. The papers... very unclear on the criteria for the papers, even when you ask him to look at specific part. Lol please just don't take him.
If you think you can take this class and just try hard and do a good job and pass you are sorely mistaken. Straight A students will struggle to pass and any other student will fail. As stated by the teacher, at least half of you will fail. He is too busy with his other job, classes, and radio show to care about his students to help them to pass.
One of the best teachers I've had in a long time, I wish he taught more classes. Hes a tough grader but is willing to work with you. Super funny guy, and very enthusiastic about his subject. A lot of people fail, but a lot of people don't put in 100%. He wants you to pass. Excited everyday to go to class and you don't have to buy a book!
His lectures or some of the most interesting lectures Ive taken. His communication with students is a little bizarre, because Ive tried to speak to him face to face a few times and he is a little reserved. Grading is super tough, you have to awnser questions on the writing assignment as spefic as possible, makes it difficult to get a good grade.
He is a really funny teacher and gives very good lectures which make the tests easier, but if you don't do his papers EXACTLY the way he wants, you will fail. so just ask for help from the beginning cuz odds are you will fail them.
This class itself was very interesting but he only has 4 assignments and 4 tests all semester and does not make it a priority to remind you of the upcoming due dates. His lectures were very interesting to me but you can't miss a day of class or you'll be lost. He is also very hard to contact outside of the classroom. Plus only 50% pass the class.
The classes lectures are interesting, but the teacher is a tough grader. He boasts that over half of us will fail. We have to write exactly as he would or we fail. The biggest problem is he is not specific on assignments, doesn't excuse absences unless you have it basically notarized. Would not recommend anyone takes his class. Very poor teacher.
Gives awful instructions on all of the writing assignments and brags about hows he is gonna fail over half of us. Even if you follow his written instruction to a T he will make you down for some rule that he thought would be implied. To pass anything you will need to run them by Drew before turning them in. First Butte Prof I've had a problem with.
I am struggling on my writing assignments and I see a few reviews here saying to ask him for help. This is a quote from his writing assignment instruction page, "6) I am not a writing instructor. For assistance with your writing, here are several resources available to you:..." He directs his unwanted, struggling students elsewhere.
He is not a good instructor. His grading is ridiculous. He talks about his opinions a lot for a history class... He is very confusing. His exams are weird and very hard. His study guides are vague and not helpful at all. I would never take a class with him again or recommend him to anyone.
Drew is a tough grader, having said that he lets you know that at the beginning of the course and provides you all the tools you need to be successful. Participation matters so dont miss very many classes.
Worst professor I have ever taken. He wants you to fail and is very specific with his grading. He will pick out the smallest things to mark you down for. He constantly brags about how he has a high failure rate. He tells you that you will need to be very proficient in your grammar but is not willing to help you. I reported him to the dean too pass.
Although Drew has interesting lectures, he is the worst instructor i have ever had. His grading is so unfair its clear he wants you to fail the class. He also doesn't have any office hours so if you want help with the writing assignment, its nearly impossible to meet with him. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Cant say enough bad things about drew. Wouldnt really recommend him to anybody at all.
This teacher is the type of teacher that doesnt care about you or your grades. He doesnt do any effort into helping you with assignments and will not make any time to do so. He grades pretty hard and expects you to know most of the things.
The professor is great. He explains at the beginning of the year, the expected reading and writing levels. His teaching is undisguisable from the best.
Drew has fun lecutres, but unfortunately he goes off his personal opinion on many matters. Grades very tough, but if you ask for help he is willing to help. The thing that irks me the most is his quickwrites, says they have no "major" impact to your grade, yet does anything to make sure you don't get full points. Might as well skip class.
Very interesting and comical teaching style. Is very knowledgeable on the subject and gives good insight, but he is a very hard grader. This class is basically an English class and a History class rolled into one. Start your homework early and work on it everyday. Would recommend if you want a challenge.
Drew doesn't lecture in class on everything that's on the tests, but that's true for most college professors. All of his assignments are ONLINE, so if you don't have access to computers or are terrible at online assignments, consider a different professor. Get to class on time or you forfeit your Quick Write (10 pts) for the day, which adds up.
Worst experience ever with a college class. He brags about how half of his class fails and thinks that its funny that the average grades for his tests is a D. Half of class he spends talking about his personal life and his radio show. He says if you have trouble with his writing assignments you need to find help elsewhere.
He is very opinionated. He makes you feel belittling
This is the worst professor ever. He said, I dont care if you dont pass, I am still getting paid. His grading is insanely hard for no reason, tests are all online and assignments are due online, but if you arent specific enough with your answers its an automatic F. You will regret it, do not take this course. DO NOT.
There is not enough bad things to say about this professor. Dont take the class.
Now at Chico State I realize that students coming out of high school are not quite prepared for college. This is a college course and Drew wants to prepare his students for the future. The reviews on here reflect the inability of young people to adapt to college courses. Connect with Drew so he can help you be successful in his and future classes.
Worst teacher I've ever had in my life. The fact he has a job a Butte college is laughable. Literally FORCES his political views on the students, and is the worst grader. He gets mad when you don't ask for help, and will grade writing assignments based on if you asked for help. Don't take the class. Awful teacher
By far the worst professor I've ever had. I genuinely don't understand how he has a job. He preaches that he's there to help, but then refuses to do so. It's certain that anyone taking this class will fail his writing assignments. He's an extremely tough grader.
This class was tough! Traulsen is tough. That being said, if you want to learn a lot about history, go into this world being able to have an informed conversation about history, be pushed to be a better writer and be pushed to defend your opinions - then take this class and this prof. If you want an easy A and a light load, this is not for you.
Drew is definitely one of the toughest professors I've had, but I can say that I learned a lot from his class. He is a very tough grader, but if you pay attention to his grading criteria and follow them exactly you'll do well. Take advantage of whatever extra credit he offers, you might need it later on.
Drew is an extremely tough professor at the start I enjoyed his class and then when the writing assignments came up I actually cried as he sent a letter saying most of us will fail. His writing assignments are so tough and if its not what he wants to read he simply will give you zeros. Im speechless and so upset.
The writing assignments are challenging but he's more than willing to work with students and he's clear about what's expected. He's passionate about the subject so his lectures are very engaging.
This class is difficult but do-able. Submit your writing assignments for corrections for extra credit, show up to class, and you will have no issue in this class.
If you do not submit your paper in for extra credit and review you will not do good. It makes no sense. If you submit for review and do every assignment you should be fine. Incredibly tough grader for what is supposed to be a GE class and made me very frustrated as I have never had problems with a teacher like this before.
I try to be fair in these ratings as I understand teaching is hard and nobody is perfect, but I personally don't think he is cut out for this work. I felt he was belittling and passive-aggressive, overall he made me feel uncomfortable. his grading style was ridiculous, as there was no room for self-writing style. he made the class unenjoyable.
I enjoyed this class but it was by no means easy. There are four writing assignments and they will make or break your grade. Professor Traulsen will offer you great help with them, but even so, getting a good grade is extremely hard. Averages were even often failing so beware.
Personally, I loved having Drew Traulsen. His lectures made me feel interested in history for the first time ever. I found myself laughing and paying attention when he taught! In my opinion he was hilarious and fun. He is an extremely tough grader which I think he should be easier on students considering its a 3-unit class.
Very solid instructor. Funny guy, good sense of humor. Lectures are very reviting, he made the material interesting and easy to learn. Very tough grader, don't expect to get full marks for much of anything. But he does allow you to turn in your papers early for review so you know what to improve on before they are graded.
Completed Professor Drew's history course, engaging and thought-provoking. Despite challenges with a potentially belittling teaching style and a noticeable political bias, seeking help proved responsive. Achieved growth in writing skills through tribulations, contributing to an overall positive experience.
If you're not an 18-19 year old hipster yuppie impressed by a 50+ year old insulting the locals, pontificating about his taste in music, and forcing his opinions on you, you might as well take up day drinking because you're probably going to fail. No wonder kids are getting radicalized if THIS guy is their first stop in higher learning. Spitefulguy
Read the negative reviews on here, they basically took the words out of my mouth. Told us 50 percent of the class would fail, that he's only there for the money, teaches his narrative of history backed by his political/social views and scoffs at patriotism. His grading says my writing is an F but in college composition I have an A. How's that work?
Don't take his class, just don't..I barely got an A on the skin of my teeth...Lectures and exams were ok, but writing assignments really determine whether you will pass the class or not. He is not an English professor but proceeds to grade the "quick" writing assignments to standards way harder than any General Education class should be able to.
Don't recommend at all, his grading is ridiculous, on his writing assignments he expects you to go above and beyond when the question is asking for the most simple answer. Lectures aren't boring however he says he doesn't really care if you pass or not because he's getting paid.
Was a terrible teacher if you want to fail this class he is your teacher when asking for help he doesn't give any and grades very unnecessary hard. You will fail this class if you don't write what he wants to hear. Would never recommend.
This professor grades according to ideological purity and appears to be present only to collect a check. Their gatekeeper mentality manifests in applying master's-level grading rigor to functionally illiterate students.. He enjoys devaluing the students' belief in their own capabilities, and is clearly a straggler from the new left and theirfailure
Leck mah bawls with lawts of sal-eye-ybah, "professor" Professor is a dimwit with a myopic understanding of history bordering on PC principal. In the words of of Benjamin____09 "Fiction allows for an interplay of narratives about history." And Drew definitely makes that to make $$$
