Theory - final exam will kill you!
Explains things *VERY* well (as long as you read the book for background 1st)..class pace is very reasonable (won't feel behind)..prof is a very nice guy overall, answers questions well and so far having a good time in AFM101
can somebody give him an award? he's one of the best profs in waterloo. very clear and organized all the time!
Very clear portrayal of accounting topics and midterm was quite simple. Weekly assignments are not difficult but nonetheless a pain to complete.
He is a good teacher. He doesn't go too fast and he explains things well. Won't stop talking about this cough he had for a month. The midterm was long but not too bad. The assignments are okay, and you have tutorial help if you need it.
Awesome prof! If you pay attention and keep up with the material, you'll be more than ready to get a good mark. Midterm and assignments are more than fair - no reason you can't get an A
Keeps your attention and tries to make everything relevant to real world issues. Very nice guy, mid-term was pretty easy.
A very nice prof, clear/organized lectures, if you miss something the first time, he'll always repeat it seconds later. very helpful, and funny too.
I would recommend any one to takes accounting courses to take his courses. he is the best accounting professor and maybe the best professor at this school. they should nominate him for president of university
Gosh, what a nice guy! He's so friendly and approachable when you want to ask him a question, and tries to make content as less dry as possible...he definitely made me feel good about UW! Oh and he's very smart and knowledgable too...I agree, he should be president of UW! Great job sir!
Excellent prof. Very good at explaning concepts. Keeps slides simple and to the point. Uses good examples and analogy to explain complicated aspects of the course. Always on top of things.
Duane is one of the best accounting profs at UW. His material is clear, applies it to the real world, gives hints on what may/may not be on the exams, and provides excellent help. A very nice guy. *Beware*: Final MC exam was a lot harder than expected. Lots of tricks. Final exam was way too long.
awesome prof. midterm was easy. made the final more challenging though - it was multiple choice, but most of the questions were calculations!
duane was my best lecturer eva...he make accounting enjoyable to learn..the exams were so long though...apart from that..he is excellente
Informative prof. Approachable. Midterm was good - but avg was too high so exam was harder. But it was not more difficult, just a lot more questions (longer). Repetitive and explains concepts really well so it stays in your head. Do practice problems - helps alot. Nice guy! You'll like this class
very good prof! really caring and nice. extremly helpful if you approach him and always fair! cares a lot about his students. if you do the work - ull be fine. he explains things really well.
Kennedy was super enthusiastic about Accounting, something you don't see too much of. He was great at explaining concepts and was very helpful. Anytime I had a question he could answer it, he knew the subject really well.
Very good prof. Very Good.
Funny, and a good teacher.
he's really good at teaching :)
Excellent Prof!!.. Though i recommend taking an accounting course before taking this one. The Mid term was really hard for this class, but you learn alot!!
very intelligent guy (hard to cheat with)...other than that, his charms and good looks makes the course worthwhile ;)
Definitely knowledgable...he knows so much it's kind of scary. I wish he'd spend a bit more time in class on the trickier concepts though, since they're usually focused a lot on tests! The midterm's okay, but the final is no piece of cake. Overall, I liked his class...I would not mind having him again as a prof later on, he's a nice guy.
I would probably give him better ratings if I had actually listened in class. I was so behind in the course that it made attending class useless. If you have never taken any accounting courses in high school and don't spend time reading the textbook, this course is really hard.
very hard prof............gives hard midterms and final. don't take this course in fall term otherwise (_!_)
Accounting is definitely a hard course but this prof is great and he really knows his stuff. It is hard to catch up though because of how hard the materials are but attending his lectures is really helpful if you actually listen that is. Always do the classroom questions assigned in the text and if you know how to do them then you will be fine.
great teacher, with fair exams.
Fair professor, but it is highly recommended that you have taken an accounting course in high school otherwise be prepared to read and work quite a lot. If you have taken an accounting course, still, do the classroom problems and the readings, and a 70% + should be no problem.
hes soo damn annoying its not even funny. He ll stop during his lecture and pik on ppl to stay quiet. He teaches really good and knows his stuff really well. His exams and midterms are really long and hard so watch out. If you havenot taken an accounting course before dont take his course because he goes at a really fasst pace. Not recommended.
he's a good prof
This man is amazing. He is very helpful and is suprisingly passionate about accounting. Overall if you do all the work, you can easily get an 80 with this guy. Excellent Professor.
Excellent Prof.
Duane Kennedy is an amazing amazing prof. He is just so good, both as a person and a prof. He is one of the best profs. It is recommended, however, that you take accounting before taking his course.
Great prof. He's thorough, has a great deal of practical experience and is very enthusiastic (which is great in an 8:30 accounting course). Midterm was very easy but his final exam was INTENSE. We're all pretty sure he bell curved it though. Take him for AFM 101, no question.
Excellent prof!
He explains really clearly and he answers questions very thoroughly.
Awesome prof. Repeats himself to help you get everything in lectures. Answers any questions fast with clarity online. Makes difficult concepts easier to grasp in lectures.
Kennedy is an awesome prof. Really knows his stuff and can simplify it for those who had no prior knowledge of accounting like me. The online assignments are really helpful, makes you learn the stuff, so do them. Love his simple and to the point powerpoints. Very organized prof. Carefully outlines what you should be doing to succeed. Thumbs up.
Not only does he make the world of accounting super interesting, but he explains concepts and theory in such a way that those paying attention will not forget how or why certain things take place. Very well organized, and a real fun class.
great prof. really into accounting. extremely helpful and monitors ACE all the time. REally nice guys, but his exams can fool you, be prepared
THE PROFESSOR IS REALLY GOOD.
He's a nice guy and his lectures are actually quite informing. THE PROBLEM IS.. I can't help falling asleep in his class.. It's really hard to stay awake!
Fantastic! He is the best (not one of the best) accounting teacher which I have ever seen. His Lecture is extremely clearly and helpful. And he is a nice guy, difinitely. Im definitely enjoy his lecture even though Im not really good at accounting.
Defnitely a great prof, knows exactly what he's talking about, makes sure the class understands the important stuff. I think the midterm wasn't bad, but I have 2 years of accounting. Def. helpful, very nice guy. Lyryx assignments are basically a free 10%. Kinda hope he taught more upper years, but I'll prolly have to wait til masters.
Fantastic Prof! Best in AFM. Too bad his not teaching AFM 102. Knows a lot about accounting. Don't try to bugging for marks with him because he'll not give you any extra mark, especially if you didn't put all your effort in the midterm. If you study hard, you will do great in this course. Good luck.
Lectures don't seem that necessary. Everything's in the textbook. But then again, I've had 2+ years of accounting experience.
Even though I am terrible at accounting, I am actually learning quite a lot from him. He is extremely helpful and great at explaining concepts.
Excellent Professor
Great Prof!Lectures are very clear and organized. He knows the course is boring so he tries hard to raise interest. Exams are reasonable if you attend lectures and read the textbook. He also posts previous exams, and if you do them you should be set. Nice person too! Extremely friendly and approachable. Always available for help. Superb prof!
Very good prof, although the final exam was too long and there wasn't enough time to check everything.
Good prof. Pulls more tricks on tests than you'd expect from such a nice guy but a great prof for introductory classes.
He truly, truly LOVES afm. You can tell from the way he teaches. Listening to him talk so intently about afm definitely affects your own interest as well. I hate afm but loved his lectures. CAREFUL--his midterms/final are not hard, but TRICKY. Do previous years' exmples and you should be fine. Expect 1-2 chapter(s) of textbook reading/week.
Great Teacher. Explains all theory required. Concise notes. Make sure you go to his lectures!
Nerdlinger!
great prof!
Hey, you can tell the guy really knows his stuff. INCREDIBLE lecture notes given in class. They keep up with what you can write down, and are incredibly concise. They really prepare you for the exams, since they can throw unbelivably difficult questions and you'll still be able to answer it. Take his class, and you'll be prepared!
Clear, concise notes.
Kennedy is a great prof. He knows his stuff, and is very helpful when you don't understand something. Tests are also very fair. If you attend class and keep up, easy A.
Very helpful Prof. It really will help you if you took 2yrs of accting in highschool prior. Attending class and doing your homework is a MUST.
Amazing prof. Very easy to follow what he's talking about and take notes in his class. Really knows his stuff, and is great at explaining it.
Awsome accounting prof. He makes the boring stuff much more interesting than it could hav been
Excellent teacher... explained everything very well. Highly recommended
Really great prof. Sometimes can go a bit slow because he tried to make sure that everyone understand the material. He also knows very well the material he is teaching.
Great prof! Really knows what he's talking about. Very considerate and speaks slowly so you can write down everything he says. Very clear. Made it interesting by talking about real world accounting issues. Still need the textbook cause he doesnt really go through the financial statements. Midterm was easy, but watch out for the final exam.
He is the best prof! He speaks slowly and makes sure everyone has time to write down what he is saying. He also says things in a really understandable way. His powerpoint slides are concise yet contain everything they should, and he really prepared us well for the exam.
Loved this class; it was super easy (assuming you have prior accounting knowledge, otherwise it might move a bit fast). Kennedy explained things very well, and if you didn't understand, he clearly explains it. Overall: highlight of my course load.
Great Prof
Professor Kennedy is the best professor I've ever had. He explains stuff thoroughly and I learned a lot from him. I want him to teach every single one of my classes.
This professor is amazing. He explains everything so clearly and is really helpful whenever you email him. I wish I realized earlier to switch to his section. Best prof that gives an amazing impression of Waterloo.
He teaches things pretty clear but his exams are really hard.
Kennedy is awesome!! You have to attend the lecture because his slides are simple version and you have to or add more details on that.He explains the concepts clearly.Examples are important in this course. He show us the work, how to get the answers. He always encourage u to ask question and willing to answer any. He is very nice!
Amazing prof ! clear with ever concept, gotta attend lectures to make use of the slides . Fair exams overall
Duane's a good guy, but not the most interesting prof - repetitive. same thing over and over again, reworded three times each - talks, so, slowwww - assignments are like... he teaches you 1+12, now go guess how many atoms are in this jar - "uh huuuuuuuuuh" - only response you get when you participate - Whole course: relevance vs reliability
DON'T KNOW WHY I ATTEND CLASS, LEARNED NOTHING THE WHOLE TERM. The prof is okay, but the course itself is a snoozer.
Preaches all semester about how "accounting theory doesn't have an exact answer", but then gives you 0 on a question because "it didn't match the marking key". Good prof though, seems to know his stuff, but the exams (which are worth 80% of the course) seem to be up to random chance.
Worst professor ever. Encourages discussion on questions and nods yes to basically half of the classes' answers. Come exam, write the same answer - given 0, because it doesn't match marking key.
Participation is dumb, raise your hand and stay stupid things to earn points. Say one or two smart things and its as if you didn't participate at all.
Wow.. some really ugly things being said here.. There is definitely some disconnect between the assignmentsexams and the material discussed during class because it's a bit vague and it seems like he's looking for very specific thing, but Kennedy himself is a very nice prof who is more than willing to help if you have questions.
Great at explaining concepts, he goes at the most amazing pace in his lectures that you can basically write down verbatim what he says for your notes. But his exams are hard as he marks questions that seem to be subjective in nature so objectively.
Fairly interesting course but midterms and exams are marked at a next level. In class he facilitates discussion and agrees with all opinions but exams are his opinion only (which you don't know) so it's up in the air.
One of the worse courses I've taken in my undergraduate. Professor does not care about students at all and rambles in class about the same thing. He says there isn't a right answer but his marking key for exams are very specific.
In the midterm and final exam, he is looking for very specific answers. Dumping answers will cost you marks. Participation matters in this course. He will not hesitate to give you a 020 in participation. Honestly, the course concepts are very applicable, but the way he tests is not reflective of your knowledge.
Great prof, explain difficult concepts with clarity. I also like the fact that he writes out the problems on the whiteboard so it's easy to follow. As someone has mentioned before, try to do the problems before coming to class, it will help you to achieve a better mark
He taught the material so well, you can really tell he knows what he's doing. I actually wasn't registered in his section but I sat in his lectures instead of the other prof's. Totally worth it.
Appalling
Everything previous reviews mentioned still hold true in 2022. Very tough marker, and doesn't care about your wellbeing at all. Worst course of my undergrad period.
Did not explain material, does not care about students. Professor does not care about student health. Worst, worst course and professor I have ever encountered. He truly has permanently damaged my mental health. Beware of this prof.
