Class was easy! The homework is optional, but it's better to do it for the experience. Gives plenty of examples in class. Easy tests, but the final was kinda harder than the three midterms, in my opinion. Lets anyone in the class as long as there's a place to sit, so don't worry about being on the waitlist. Take him if you are given the chance to!
Lectures are great. Straight and to the point. Doesnt prove the formulas but gives handouts to better understand where they came from. the test was basically problems from the optional hw and the discussion sheets. In 17B things get way harder. Concepts are still taught well in lecture but midterms become exponentially harder. B range was 64% curve
(He looks better in person without the facial hair. Pops his collar.) Lectures are very worthwhile--going to them and just getting the notes will probably earn you a C in the class. The rest is up to you to practice.
Kouba is a very good teacher. He explains his material very well. You must attend lectures and you must do the homework and discussions which he does not require you to do or go to. If you plan to get an easy A this is not the class for you, but if you are willing to do the work, Kouba's a great choice.
Well, umm, he pops his collar which confused me. other than that, he teaches well. Don't like that he doesn't give hw credit. he does tell you what kind of problems are on the test, so that was a big help.
Subject is hard. His tests are easy, curve doesn't do anything. BUT you MUST do your homeworks or else you're screwed for his tests!!! do the discussion sheet, and meet with him to solve some problems. He's easy compared to others. So take him instead of Larripa
KOUBA IS SIMPLY AMAZING!!!! His style of teaching is wonderful. He is extremely helpful, and his office hours are extremely flexible. He is the best math instructor I've EVER had!!!! I <3 KOUBA!
Lectures are pretty fast, but are very good. Tests are fair. Not too easy not too hard. Nice guy.
Kouba is a great math teacher - he should be teaching people HOW to teach math since so few actually know how to do it adequately. He explains things so that they can be understood and he is funny and personable. 16A would only have been better if the homework had been collected, but I think that this is a department thing. Take a class from him!
Professor Kouba is a great professor, he teaches a lot every single time you are in lecture, so if you have a question, you must ask it immediately or he will move on. The availability of his office hours are phenomenal. I never went to his office hours, but he offers a multitude of times. Overall, he is one of the better professors at UC Davis.
he's a good teacher. the class is fairly easy, but the final is really tough, that's why it's good to do really well on the midterms.
Kouba is one of the best teachers I have ever had. It takes a while to get used to his style of teaching, but no worries, because he has office hours every day and he is very helpful. Once u get used to his style of teaching though, it is a pretty easy class. Study hard to get good grades on the tests. I would recommend him to anyone.
He is the best teacher i ever had in davis. As long as you go to lectures, and do the homeworks you will get an A. I had 17B & 17C, and i got A in every single midterms and finals. Go to his office hours, he is very nice and friendly.
excellent professor, lectures are very useful, homework assignments and disscussion sheets are beneficial to do, go to office hours they help out a lot, he is very flexible with office hours and offers a lot
Kouba is tight! Really good teacher and cool guy.
Kouba is a great professor. Lectures are very helpful. Practice test are helpful, they have the same format and problems as the real test. Website is also very useful. Kouba's lectures are funny and he makes calculus easy to understand and easy to learn.
Kouba is awesome. He teaches you what you need to know, and tests straight out of his notes and practice exams. His lectures are very clear, even at 8 AM. Highly recommended.
I had Kouba all 3 quarters of mat17 because hes great! He teaches you exactly what you need to know. Discussions are not mandatory and if you don't like your TA, just go to Kouba during his office hours (might even be more useful) Exams were long but fair. Curves very nicely. He's funny and keeps you awake, even at 8am.
Dr. Kouba is very easy to talk to. Even at 8 AM he's still jumping around and making the class very intesting. Quizzes and exams are fair. I was never good at math, until I sat down and listened to Dr. Kouba's lectures. Have fun and good luck in Dr. Kouba's class!
Professor Kouba is a great guy, he is quite energetic and he is willing to joke with the class. He makes the class really interactive, and he completely ignores the fact that he is teaching such a large lecture hall, so that if you ask a question, it is virtually personalized. I'm really bad at math, but he taught me more than I knew in AP Calculus
brilliant professor..also very personable and helpful especially during office hours...office hours really helped me feel extremely confident on tests. go to office hours.. get there early if possible cuz his office is small. Do worksheet questions. don't bother going to discussions unless u have no clue what is going on or u think ur ta is hot

Professor Kouba is probably one of the best teachers to go to for help. Office hours are very helpful and lecture is clear and succinct if you pay attention. I had a lot of trouble with calculus in high school but kouba made it crystal clear. Kouba is probably one of the best math professors ever so take him!
i've been promoting this teacher to everybody. he's funny and a great teacher. i got an a in a calculus class and that's a sentence i never thought i'd say
One of the absolute best math teachers I've ever had. Very clear and effective with his teaching methods, and his lecture notes are great. Lots of examples, really helps get the concepts to sink in. Tests are more than fair, and his personality is great. Get him for math any chance you get!

Great Teacher!! Really helped me to understand the material well.
great teacher. really helpful. also funny and intresting
Great guy, pretty good teacher. Midterms and final not too difficult, just easier questions from the lecture notes. GO TO THE LECTURES, DO THE HOMEWORK- it's not mandatory yet it is to get a good grade. He has a lot of office hours, and his website is very helpful.
His lectures are clear and concise. I learned a lot during lectures! Although, I can say that he can do a better job in picking his TA's... And for prospective students, do the homework and the practice exams. It's worth every second you spend!
was he really as great as everyone says? he is an alright teacher, but i found him to be condescending...stop lecturing on how to study and just teach calculus were not in high school...its not that easy to get a good grade...way easier and more likely to get a c d or an f (look at the grades) than an a or b.
every assignment helps and go to OH if you don't understand. he truly puts a lot of effort into his teaching.
I loved Kouba. He was a very good teacher, very clear and helpful. Tests were fair, except I wished there was a little more time. Even though I got a B, it's because I didn't study enough to get an A. But his practice exams, homework solutions, and discussion sheets were extremely helppful. Take advantage of them!

he's a really good calc teacher. he's willing to help you in anyway especially during office hours. he posts all hw solutions online & he also posts practice exams & solutions as well. the practice exams are VERY helpful because the tests are practically the same thing but just with different numbers. go to class & take notes & you'll do fine
He is a good teacher but sometimes he is a bit harsh with people. Got an A+ for this class and didn't study at all. Missed several classes. Did practice exams the night before midterms and final.
Kouba is a great professor. He explains things very clearly and he has really neat notes. He tells you what is going to be on the midterm and final so you can prepare for them well. To get an A in his class was pretty easy for me. Take him!!!
KOUBA IS AWESOME! Allows calculator on midterms. Midterms are just like the practice exams. DO HOMEWORK!! Very accessible, he has office hours even on weekends during midterm time. Very nice and cute. Very good teacher! Don't talk in class or let you cell phone go off in class. GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY!
BEST teacher @ UCD! Go to class and do the hws n you'll do good on the 3 midterms. Study for the final from the midterms. Curves are great! I was lazy and hardly went to class and studied the night before midterms and final. I got Cs on 2 midterms n failed the 3rd one and most likely failed the final, but I still managed to get a c in the class :)!
this class is pretty easy. No required homework so you can just scan through the solutions (just make sure you know how to do them). DO the practice midterms, they're really helpful!
He's one of my most favorite professors in UCD. Pay attention in class because he explains things pretty thoroughly and clearly. I got As on his exams from studying his practice exams, paying attention in class, and skimming through his suggested hw problems.
This guy rocks! Seriously, he is really easy to understand and helpful if for some reason you don't understand. He holds OH almost every day, but if you go, get there early, because his office is small.Tests are fair and he provides practice tests. Only neg. thing to say, is that he writes A LOT on the board. Hw isn't collected. DO IT THOUGH!!
BEST math teacher! SO organized and clear! im TERRIBLE at calc and i got an A- for 17A and its looking pretty good for 17C so far. grade based only on exams and they are tough but as long as u study really hard and understand the methods of each prblm. youll do great! TAKE KOUBA! u wont be sorry! be aware, 50 mins for an exam is REALLY short!
Awesome teacher! Explains things nicely. Involves the class, which is cool. Lectures are valuable; go to them! Tests are hard, but he tells beforehand how many of each type of question is going to be on the tests. He cares about his students and how they do and everything. Awesome guy. I'd take his class again!
Kouba is a great teacher and easily the best calculus professor on campus. Just be sure to do all the practice midterms and homework problems in order to pass the midterms.
He's the GREAT! He's easy to get along with and he learns your name by looking at your papers! Plus he provides lots of CANDY at office hours! He's pretty laid back and cool to get along with! If you go to office hours most likely he'll give you a question that's similar to the real test if you ask for it! :D
Seriously the best calculus professor in Davis! He has had a lot of experience teaching. Very passionate about math. I had him for an 8am class and his lectures woke me up every morning. Go to office hours. It is very helpful and FUN! Kouba is definitely a professor I recommend to every math student.
I had kouba for 16A also. His lectures explain everything! take the practice test over and over because it is very very very similar to the exams. GREAT PROFESSOR! no homework required. makes math easy and fun.
Kouba rocks! love the dome wax. Popped collar is awesome. He has less hair now than in the picture. But seriously he is very easy to understand and clearly cares about your success in the class. Practice exams and homework are very helpful. Highly recommended.
Great Teacher. He is very clear and involves the class well. Do the optional homework. Take his class if you can.
LOVE KOUBA. Best class of the day. Hilarious, informative, crystal clear, extremely helpful during office hours. Go to class and do discussion sheets and practice tests. The book isn't great, just for extra practice. I enjoyed his class for 17 A and B a lot!
Best professor I've had at Davis so far. His lectures make the material very easy to understand. Discussion sheets are helpful for studying for the exams, which are are pretty hard but not unreasonable.
Professor Kouba is absolutely amazing. He involves the class during his lectures. Plus, he has office hours almost every day. He does not collect homework and his practice exams are alike to the actual exam. Wish I could take 16B with him, but 8:00 is too early for me.
He posts practice exams online. They are very helpful. Midterms are just like practice exams with harder numbers. Homework is not mandatory, but is very useful. Tests usually not curved. Writes on chalkboard, so get a good seat. Really great professor. Just do the homework, study, and you'll do fine.
Kouba is really humerous and keeps you awake in class. very good teacher who gives clear instructions. Fair grading. i found the practice exams posted on his website extreamly helpful. do your homework, attend lectures and you'll do fine
best teacher i've had at davis. He cares about how you do in his class. His office hours are really helpful and i definately recommend you go as often as possible! Although class is at 8am, its totally worth it. - i'm not a morning person. He keeps you awake with clever and humorous remarks. TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY!!! You're missing if
So he is a great teacher and everything he teaches is very clear. I really understood everything he was teaching but is final exam was hard! I got a B, B, A on the 3 midterms and ended up with a C in the class because of the final. It is hard but he is a good teacher.
I've taken him for 16A&B. I go to all the lectures. It's easy to take good notes. His lectures are clear and helpful. He gives sample midterms and finals for all the exams. If you can do them, you'll do well on the exam. He posts "recommended" hw, but it's not mandatory. SO helpful during office hours and gives you candy. approachable & friendly!
Great prof. he is able to give clear lectures even at eight in the morning. he's very reasonable. Even though exams may be a bit tedious, it is guaranteed that you will learn a whole deal from this class. he can be funny, but most of the time, i find his jokes a little embarrassing. still. great prof.
kouba is loud and clear. he gives numerous examples of math problems on the board. his tests are like the homework problems..the homework problems are optional to do. there is extra credit given: a one page survey and/or a three page essay if you want to help your grade.
He was the funniest math teacher I've ever had, and it was the only math class that I wasn't bored out of my mind in. The examples he does during class are a lot like those on the test, and doing the homework is very helpful. Math is a lot of work, but I think Kouba makes it easier. I would take him again if I had the chance.
Moves very fast. Tests are hard
He keeps his lectures interesting with his sense of humor. Finals and midterms are very similar to his practice midterms/final. He's very organized with his own web page. He doesnt collect homework but posts up homework solutions and test solutions on his web page if you need help. Provides plenty of office hours, even on weekends.
Awesome teacher! He's friendly and cares about the students. He teaches stuff clearly and goes through many examples. He also provides practice exams which were pretty useful.
Honestly the best math professor I've ever had! He's extremely clear and the examples that he uses in class are the same level of difficulty as the problems in exams. Keep up with the optional homework, do the practice problems given in class, and do the old tests. Best thing is that he tells you exactly what you need to study for before each exam!
Like any math class, you MUST MUST do the HW. He didn't require HW, so it made many slack off. As a result, poor test grades. Tests aren't exactly like sample tests, but somewhat close. Examples on board are pretty clear, but writes kind of fast. Good prof.
HE IS AN AMAZING TEACHER!! HE MADE ME LOVE AND MATH AGAIN. IF YOU GO TO LECTURES AND DO THE HOMEWORK THERE IS NO WAY ONE CAN FAIL. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, HE GIVES OUT FREE CANDY!!! HE IS VERY FUNNY TOO!!! I LOVE KOUBA!!!
Good professor, but in some instances tries to unteach you. He gives wrong answers and tries to trick you in a pretty annoying way. If you have taken Calc AB, or another class, this is a breeze and there's no need to study. Extra credit on the exams makes it beyond easy too. 110/100 on 2 of my 3 midterms. Seriously, take this class.
He is great at teaching calculus. His lectures are always clear and understandable. He gives exams with basic problems that are easy to do if you know the main concepts.
he is a good math teacher! he explains everything really good! yay!!!!!
Best math teacher ever. Go to lecture and you will never have to open the book unless its for homework. Very helpful and clear.
Really, unless you have a specific reason, take the 16 series over the 17. Kouba is a wonderful prof and keeps lecture s interesting. His office hours are super flexible (even holds them on weekends). This class is in no way easy. No homework collected. Weekly discussion. Fantastic prof, but do not recommend this series.
class was ok. tests not to far off from practice. skipped class sometimes and still did ok,. textbook never used, no assigned hw. lectures understandable, lots of office hours, class easy for me because had math in high school
Kouba has changed my perspective of math. I wish i could have him for all three secions of the 16 series. He is very clear and approachable when you have questions. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! He is a great guy to get to know, and he is amazing at helping you understand the subject at hand.
Really great teacher. He explains material well and emphasizes common mistakes that people make during tests so you can reduce your chances of making those mistakes. His homework solutions online are very helpful. Only thing I didn't like was his changing office hour times, I when I can count on a certain time I can ask for help.
Take math 17 with Kouba. He is very clear and organized in lecture, and the work that he provides for discussion is also very helpful. He grades fair and offers optional extra credit assignments at the end of the quarter. If only he is now teaching 17b...
Truly a great professor!! He is one of the best teachers that I have ever had in math. He makes lectures so clear and interesting, it's obvious he has a passion for his subject. Homework is optional, but it definitely helps to do it since the solutions are worked out and online.
extremely good teacher. very clear in lecture and does tons of examples. gives out many handouts, and midterm/final are pretty similar to the practice tests. highly recommend :D
Kouba is a great teacher. He's very clear in lecture, tells you where past students make mistakes so you don't make them, and homework is optional. He gives two practice tests for each exam which are pretty similar to the real thing. Tests are pretty easy compared to some past teachers I've had. If you can get Kouba, I would definitely take him!
Pretty nice guy and good teacher. His notes are all over the board and most of the lecture is spent on examples but tests aren't too hard.
I took prof. Kouba spring quarter. He rocks. One of my fav teacher. If you do the homework and go to lecture you will do fine. Duh... Do the homework and go to office hours. He has the coolest office. Kouba Rocks!
Very enthusiastic and helpful. Clear explanations and examples.
Hella funny dude. Total goofball in office hours. Tests are so fair and he tells you exactly what types of questions to expect. As long you are prepared and put in your time an A is not too hard to get.
Great teacher. His class can be challenging if you've never taken calculus before. Even if you've taken calculus, I'd still advise you to study and do the homework because it does not guarantee you a good grade, i.e. me for example. Homework solutions are all posted online so it's in your interest to do them. Go to office hours if you have time.
Good math professor. No assigned homework but I still recommend doing it as it helps alot and he writes really good solutions. No proofs on tests which is a plus from other professors I have had in the 21 series.
pretty chill and funny and really interested and passionate about subject. he really carries that over to his students. recommend
Really good lecturer, explains things in terms you can understand. Pretty inviting during office hours, although he tends to pay more attention to people he knows well. Overall, great teacher and pretty easy tests. His practice exams mimic his actual tests pretty closely and one of the midterms was the practice text word-for-word! Same values!
lecture is super helpful. great teacher and always willing to help, even students that aren't in his class.
Kouba really knows what he is teaching and he teaches crystal clear. Everything you need to know is mentioned in lecture and written on the board. Tests can be challenging but as long as you finish the homework and memorize the formulas AS WELL AS the question format it is pretty straightforward.
Professor Kouba is the best math professor I've had in college and probably all of my life. He makes the material so easy to understand! He's really nice and gets the class involved during his lectures. Midterms/final are pretty straight forward. Study from his practice ones and you'll do well. First A I ever got on a math midterm was with Kouba :)
He's really great. He's animated, he knows what he's doing, and he makes a great effort to make math comprehensible to his students. If you do the homework and discussion sheets, it should be relatively easy to get a good grade in his class.
BEST professor thus far! Extremely helpful during office hours! Make sure you get there early if not you'll be trying to get help even from outside the hallway!! I highly highly recommend him!!! you will NOT regret taking him!!!
Great professor! Knows his stuff and does his very best to help explain concepts and keep class focused on what to learn. Tests are hard, but if you do the practice problems (no excuse because he provides plenty!), you'll do very well in his class. Clear and covers all the material you need to know for tests. Highly recommended!
Kouba is such a great professor. He usually has daily office hours and he's very clear with his lectures. I had a horrible professor for 17A, and coming to Kouba I greatly appreciate his helpfulness. He's great in office hours and makes every effort to help you succeed
Awesome prof. Great office hours. Lucky if you get to have him as your professor.
ANOTHER awesome calculus professor. He is a must have! He always reviews each lecture prior to continuing on to the next lecture which is very helpful. He also goes back and recalls certain formulas that not every professor will do. He is very clear and understandable. And I love how he always wears collared shirts and pops it up.
KOUBS IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! his lectures go step by step multiple in class examples. Always provides office hours and gives more practice problems. super down to earth and loves to have fun. come on hes the assistant basketball coach wat else could you espect!! He's awsome take him if you get the chance, wish i could have him for 16b :(
Awesome teacher and awesome dude! Take his class cause it's pretty easy as long as you do the homework and take the practice exams. Attend lecture cause most of the questions on exams are from lecture!
I was kind of scared of Kouba because he yelled at me on the 1st day of class since I asked for the exam ID card because I was late. He later apologized, and I understood. Overall, he's a cool guy and really cares about students and their learning process. His exams aren't hard, as long as you study the stuff on his website you're good.
easy class. just go to the lectures and read over your notes and you're good. his tests are really fair.
AMAZING Professor. He went through examples in detail during lectures, a lot of the problems he went over were on the midterms. Very helpful during office hours. He gives you practice midterms to practice, EXTREMELY helpful. If you look online for more practice tests, you will find he reuses his questions on tests. Highly recommend.
Must take Kouba for any calculus class. I just took 16A and I liked him better than my high school teacher. Clear and concise. Practice exams are slightly easier than actual exam. Office hours are the best!!! Do all your homework and you will be ahead of the curve. Favorite prof at Davis by far.
Kouba doesn't throw any curve balls for his exams, as long as do the homework, do the practice exams, and go to office hours (which he has a lot of) when need be. Lectures aren't mandatory, but helpful. Tests may seem long for the allotted time because for the most part, you don't get to check your answers. Grading/partial grading can be tough.
Go to lectures! He goes through examples in class step by step and they're really clear. Make sure you copy down all the notes, they're really helpful to study from. Try to do all the problems on a test because TAs usually give you some credit for trying. Use the practice exams on his site and do the homework.
HANDS DOWN, BEST PROFESSOR/LECTURER. Everything you need to know is in his lecture notes and handouts. His practice tests are SPOT ON, nearly identical to the actual tests. It's not that he's just easy, I actually felt like I really mastered the material. He's that good at teaching.
He is the best professor in Davis!! If you want an A go to office hours and lecture (If that isn't working then do the homework). Do all of the practice exams because the midterms and final are VERY similar! He is a great guy and has a fair grading scale. :) I absolutely loved this class!
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!! I am not a math person but still understood/enjoyed his lectures and got a B. Such a nice guy. Very clear what the tests will be like. Practice tests are very similar to actual tests. PLUS he offers extra credit (an easy paper on a math subject and a survey). Practice the concepts,go to office hrs, and you will do fine.
Duane Kouba is a fantastic instructor. While possessing some quirks like requiring the class to be basically silent, he manages to make complex concepts understandable through a skillful use of language, analogy, and demonstration. He is extremely accessible, holding long office hours nearly every day, and truly cares about helping students learn.
Amazing lecturer for 16A! :) Is highly helpful, has straight-forward lessons, and fair midterms. All of his lectures are based off of the book, but he clearly explains every step. The practice midterms are almost exactly like his real midterms. Final was a piece of cake. Is helpful and quite upbeat. Go to OH if necessary.
Awesome professor!! He explains every thing very clearly!! If you do all his practice exams, then you will do fine!
He is a great professor. Honestly one of the most clear lecturers that I have had in my time at Davis. If you do the homeworks, practice exams, and attend lecture, you'll be fine, and honestly, that's the way it should be. No curveballs on the midterms, they are exactly like his practice midterm, and he's so easy to understand.
great lecturer but practically impossible to get an A in class. I took calculus in high-school and 17A the previous quarter. Got an A in both, but no matter how hard I studied, too many points were taken off for trivialities.
Great professor, you will learn a lot but it is SO HARD to get an A because of the difficulty of the exams.
Kouba was a good lecturer, but made the class extremely difficult. He will not discuss grades/tests with you, and often comes off as impatient when you ask him questions. Graders for the tests were nit picky, taking off points for trivial things. Very hard to get an A.
5-6 days a week office hours, example-based lectures, practice exams and posted homework solutions all help to make Kouba a GREAT professor. Class is hard though.
If you want an A, don't take him unless you want to work your butt off like crazy. Even regent scholars I know have a difficult time getting A's in his class. There is no curve to get an A (you need a 90% raw score). GREAT lecturer, but comes off condescending when you ask him questions, and makes 17 series sooo difficult. (16 not so much?)
Best math teacher I have ever had! Actually, probably the best teacher I have had period! His lectures are very clear and he is extremely helpul in his office hours. We had 350 students in our class and he could call on a lot by name in class. Loves his students-- I ran into him buying Halloween candy at Rite Aid for office hours. Take his class!
Idk why everyone is saying his exams are hard b/c they AREN'T! They are pretty fair but there are curveball questions. He gives prac exams which are almost exactly like his real tests, getting an A is hard but fair curve.Great for office hrs,he is the best and funniest prof ever! great math prof GET HIM!it is hard to get an A tho, i always get B's
His lectures are crystal clear. Do the homework, the discussion sheets, and the practice tests! (I did that and got A's in both 17B/C with Kouba without ever going to office hours.) However, his office hours are abundant and I hear they're helpful. Tests are fair but can be tricky. Almost no curve for an A, so you need a raw 90% to guarantee an A.
Had him for both 17B & C. He is one of the best teachers at Davis because he actually knows how to teach. Clear on what he expects you to know so no curveballs. DO THE DISCUSSION SHEETS. Make sure you know how to do the disc problems & go to his office for clarification. Great guy & always willing to help. Wants you to do well. Take him!
DO THE HOMEWORK, AND DON'T FALL BEHIND!! He's a super lecturer and gives lots of examples. He also makes his own handout notes for you. His practice exams are very similar to the actual exam, so take them and make sure you understand every type of problem. Offers some extra credit. Highly recommended professor.
I also had him for 17B, but my 17C experience was scarier. The actual exams were not as similar to the practice exams as they were in 17B, and left me feeling crushed after taking the test. Not what I expected, but luckily I did triumph with an A from the curve. Probability has always been my nemesis, but he did do a great job teaching it.
Tests are very similar to practice tests on website. Don't really need to buy the textbook because all of the homework solutions are online. I still bought it and did use the book some though.
Prof expects most of his students to already have taken calc in high school (and done well). You have to keep up with ALL the homework, although its not mandatory. There are practice tests but the real tests are trickier versions of the practice test. Hard to get an A unless you are naturally good at math.
His office hours are amazing. This man truly loves his students.
Not easy but if you do the work, show up to class, and take good notes you should be ok. He explains things pretty well and has office hours often if you need help. Practice tests are very good at preparing you for the actual ones. I really appreciated that he put up solutions with explanations to the homework problems.
Great Professor! Very clear and on top of teaching exactly what you need to know on exams. He moves at a pretty fast pace, but HW extremely helps if you do it. Best professor I've had at Davis so far.
Kouba is one of the best calculus teachers at UC Davis. His lectures are easy to follow and extremely clear. Unlike many other professors, Kouba focuses more on how to do math than why. His explanations are concrete. Tests aren't too difficult if you do the homework and go to class.
Best Math Professor I have ever had,Explained things in a way that seemed easy and made you want to learn how to do the work. Great guy had office hours all the time.
Great professor! Very concise and clear explanations, tons of office hours for extra help, exams similar to practice tests. Do the homework and go to lecture and you will do fine.
One of Davis's finest. If you get Prof Kouba take him. If you don't do well in his class, then its completely your fault. He has office hours during weekends how much more dedicated can he be. Also he teaches the practical side of calculus shows us how to do it rather than the theory which overwhelms most students. His tests are easy
Kouba is awesome. Clear lecturer, and has office hours that are INCREDIBLY helpful. Loves getting to know his students and is really funny. Hard class though, expects you to learn and be able to use the material.
He is an amazing professor! One of the best professors I've ever had. TAKE HIM! He is dedicated and explain calc very well. He also has a lot of office hours. As long as you do the practice tests and homework. You will be fine!
FANTASTIC! I have poor math skills and was scared to death of calculus. He made me find it really interesting. He has a lot of office hours and is just a lovely person. One of the best professors I have EVER had in any subject. I want to math marry him and only take him for calculus classes!
LOVED having him as a teacher. Though the material is challenging, he makes the process very clear and easy to work on outside of class. He is very energetic and makes it practically impossible to do anything BUT pay attention. He also offers lots of outside help and makes accommodations for students.
Kouba is hands down one of the best math professors I've had. He's funny, caring, and extremely helpful. He does a ton of sample problems during class and explains every step to solve the problem with clarity. Homework is not mandatory but I think is crucial to understand the material. Sample tests online are a lot easier than actual exams.
Great at putting complex concepts into very simple terms. Exams are difficult for students without prior AP Calculus experience, but he offers extra credit and a lot of office hours. Definitely get into his class if you can.
Kouba is a a fantastic lecturer. His class is almost all example based and he is really engaging in class. His tests are really similar to the examples provided online and he posts the answers to all his hw's. His office hours are SUPER helpful and he holds them 20+ hours a week. Hard class but totally worth taking it with him. ALWAYS TAKE KOUBA!!
Very enthusiastic for an 8am class. Knows what he is talking about. Study your notes/recopy them and you'll do fine. Office hour wasn't helpful for me. Felt stupid coming out twice. HW wasn't mandatory, but did them anyway.
Wonderful, enthusiastic and very helpful teacher. Thus far, my favorite professor!
I thought this class was easy because it's basic calculus, but I am not a fan of Kouba. I went to his office hours one time and he made me cry. He is condescending and makes you feel stupid. I would not recommend talking to him one on one because he is rude and pretentious.
Difficult exams and no assigned homework, so all of the points come from exams. There is a curve but it is still a challenging course. Office hours were not helpful, there were always tons of people just there talking to him for fun.
Kouba is one of the best math professors at Davis. His lectures are really engaging and he explains the material really well. If you have the option definitely take Kouba. His exams are fairly difficult but if you go to class and do all the optional homework problems then it is not that bad. Kouba is a really great teacher.
He is very clear with his notes. Practice exams are all provided, the tests are very similar to the practice exams. Just do all the homework and you should get a pretty good grade.
His teaching style makes learning calculus effortless in lecture. I got a B without doing the (optional) homework and studying for tests last minute. If you take him and do the hw (which he has the solutions available for on his website) you're almost guaranteed an A!
Kouba is an amazing professor! He is probably the best professor in the math department. He explains the material very clearly. Homework isn't collected, but is very useful, and he also gives plenty of extra practice problems on his website and in office hours. The extra problems in office hours and the practice tests are very similar to his tests.
I've taken Kouba for every math class I've had at Davis. He is the best!! Alwas take him if you can. Clear, funny and very approachable and helpful.
Prof Kouba loves his job and it shows in his enthusiasm when lecturing. He has office hours daily, even on weekends. He gives his students everything they need to succeed.
I was expecting great things from this professor but I was extremely let down. He is not helpful and actually refused to help me understand why I got a problem wrong. Don't take him if you like to do math your own way; it's his way or the highway.
He definitely knows what he's talking about, but he goes over the material so fast in class that 1) it's really hard to keep up and 2) he doesn't explain the process very clearly. He writes in cursive so it's really hard to decipher sometimes. I had taken 21B before switching series and after his class, I wish I had stuck with the 21 series.
Kouba definitely is one of the better calculus teachers at Davis. He has tons of office hours if you ever need help. His tests were also similar to the practice exams he gives. Overall, he is one of my favorite teachers at Davis so far. Definitely take his class if you can!
Took the whole 16 series w/ Kouba. Straightforward in class and on exams. Exams are slightly curved through a point-scale. It was one of my easier classes but you still have to work for an A. Just do all the hw and practice materials even tho they are optional and follow the way he does the problems. Seems intimidating but he's a considerate guy.
extremely rude in office hours, you will definitely regret going. Intimidating and a very harsh grader. I tried very hard in this class, went to every lecture and did ever hw and discussion and still got a B. His tests are horrible and he asks questions on material he didn't even go over. DEFINITELY OVERRATED!
Great professor, but his tests are tough, hard to get an A.
I LOVE KOUBA! I'm a math major, so this class was really easy for me, even though not so much for others. His website is amazing. It has all the homework solutions and practice tests, so you know what to expect. Nothing is mandatory, but do homework and go to section, it helps. KEITH WAS THE BEST TA TOO3333
Kouba is great. Even though he isn't easy, an A is really doable. You'll learn a lot more in his class than other professors. People might have a hard time as he goes over a lot material very quickly (however it's thorough). Homework isn't collected but should definitely be done along with practice exams in prep for midterms. Exams are curved
Kouba is literally one of the best math professors at UC Davis. He is very friendly and always asks how you are doing. He shows that he cares for his students. His office hours are helpful but are usually full. Do the practice exams because they are very similar to the test. The final was very challenging. Overall, KOUBA IS THE HOMIE.
I had him for 16A last fall and for a freshman seminar last winter. I continued to attend his office hours for other math related help for the next two quarters and he was more than willing. Can be intimidating until you connect with him. His website is lifesaver, use it even if you don't have his class. Exams are tough but similar to real ones.
This class is pretty basic calculus, and I was right in thinking that my year of AP calc in high school would save my neck. Boy was I right. The class is hard, but Kouba was clear and concise. He's also a pretty cool guy in lectures (cracking the occasional joke here and there), but some said he can be intimidating during office hours.
Overall, Prof. Kouba was a good lecturer. I never found myself being confused. That being said, he is definitely not an approachable professor (from my experience, or course), meaning that finding help can be tough. His exams were tough, but fair. Do not take this class without prior experience with calculus.
Kouba's lectures are great and easy to understand. Show up to lectures! Also, homework may be suggested, but do them anyways. What grade you get is entirely dependent on the amount of effort you put in since his lectures cover everything that will be on the test. Exams are very fair and doable. Overall, Kouba is one of the best professors I've had!
He is an amazing professor when it comes to explaining math. However, don't expect his tests to be easy, as they can be quite challenging. Does give a bit of extra credit though, so take advantage of that!
Fantastic and funny lecturer! Explains concepts clearly, but does challenge you to think about problems. Tests are somewhat hard: lots of intermediatehard problems in a short time. Has office hours everyday, including weekends. Homework, discussion sheets, and optional practice problems (given at end of lectures) are optional, but recommended.
Take his class!! His teaching methods were straight-forward and clear. Go to his lectures. Some of his worksheets are harder that the actual exams, so doing them is helpful but not essential to passing his class. Keep up with the unassigned hw. No quizzes. Fair curve. Got a B over all, but I could've gotten an A if I'd put in the effort.
A great math teacher
Tests are much to long given the amount of time you have to take them. Do the optional homework -- all solutions are written out for you on his website. Very hard to get an A, calculated from one of his previous quarter's grades that 6% of the class got an A.
Possibly the perfect Calculus Professor; but not the easiest. Cares more for his students than the average professor, and definitely knows how to relay material more so than the others, as well. Is prompt and professional with everything he does; will always have appropriate practice material and is more than willing to help you.
PERFECT PROFESSOR! Clear with lecture. Funny. Office Hours are full of laughs. His exams are tough but well worth it for him. Please take Kouba.
To pass, you pretty much have to do the optional hw assignments online. He has the solutions for you to check if you got it right and it gives you an overview of the style he wants you to solve the problems. Practice exams are like the real exams. Pretty good curve, but you still have to work hard to get a good grade in his class.
Kouba is by far one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Do the homework even though it's optional it'll help you a lot on the exams plus the answers are all on his website. Study his practice exams because that's pretty much how the exams are formatted. Use his website because he has all the answers to homework and exams. Really funny too!
Kouba is great in that he really wants all of his students to not just succeed but to learn. If you are taking his calculus course, prerequisite knowledge from precalc is required! Don't do what I did and enter without that knowledge. He has a survey and an essay for extra credit for those of us who are less math-inclined. Very fair guy.
Not first time calculus student friendly. He has many office hours, which is the plus of having him; however he goes way too fast in class. Tests are a lot harder than assigned HW problems, discussion questions, and practice tests. If i could go back to the future I'd sneak into his class and take another professor.
Go to lectures + do his hw B+ Go to lectures + do his hw + do discussion sheets A- Go to lectures + do his hw + do discussion sheets + do everything again before midterms A+
Kouba is the best math professor at UCD. He provides clear instruction, and you know exactly what's expected of you. He is also manic and little overbearing, but you shouldn't be intimidated to ask the stupid question. He knew my name by the end of the quarter, which was weird because I never went to office hours or introduced myself. Great guy.
Kouba's lectures are amazingly clear. He uses multiple examples to explain the material, and has a distinct and well thought out plan. You will definitely fall behind if you miss a few lectures because he covers so much material in one. Tests are a bit more difficult than the homework and long, but nothing you can't do if you put in the effort.
Kouba is an amazing teacher. He teaches you the easier, clearer way to do math after he shows you the proper way so you don't waste time. He's extremely helpful in office hours and has incredibly clear lectures and notes. I wish he offered to teach each section of the 17 series because he would be my first choice teacher, hands down.
Kouba is fantastic. He is extremely intelligent and knows exactly what he's doing. Lectures and his own handouts are very helpful. Always there to help. Does TONS of example problems in class which are incredibly helpful. Shows you how to solve problems in a clear way. Chose his 8am class over every other 21C class and would do it again if I could.
He provides you with so many resources, and clearly outlines most of what he puts on exams. The homework is good practice, but I'd say that the problems he covers in lecture are more relevant to exams. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS! If you're looking for an easy grade, go to a different prof. Kouba covers stuff like error analysis which no one else covers.
Kouba is one of the best professors I have had my first year at Davis. His lectures were engaging and clear. Your grade is based on three midterms and a final exam. Discussion is optional and I never went. There is optional homework and discussion sheets, do them because they are good practice. Definitely go to his office hours. Really funny guy!
Kobe is a great teacher! I took his MAT 16A! His lectures are very clear! You can easily understand all the thing he taught ! The exam is nit that easy but not very hard. I think it's not hard to get a B. But you should work harder for A
Professor Kouba is honestly the best math professor I've ever had. His lectures are clear and concise. He assigns homework from the textbook but never collects it. His exams are pretty straightforward and are almost exactly like the practice exams he provides. If you're confused in the class then I highly recommend you going to his office hours!
Professor Kouba is a good teacher. I had the most amazing Calc teacher in high school, so this class was extremely easy for me. It was the perfect review of some of the concepts I had learned in high school. For someone new to Calc, it may be a bit fast paced. He is funny and energetic and likes to ask/answer questions during class.
This quarter is my first quarter at UC Davis and I have to say I love professor Kouba. His lectures are extremely clear and his office hours are very helpful. If you have taken calculus (AB or BC) in high school, this course will be a review for you. His midterms are very doable and the questions are directly form opt hwk and examples from class.
Kouba is a very enthusiastic lecturer. He has office hours almost every day and even on weekends, so he will be there for you whenever you need help. The math is pretty hard if you've never taken calc, but Kouba is a really fair guy. Lectures are never boring or unclear, definitley take him.
Really goes to show you that the professor matters. I hated calc after failing and retaking 21A, but Kouba went and rekindled in me that drive for success. Math lectures are never particularly interesting no matter who's giving them, but he makes them incredibly engaging. Homework isn't mandatory, but the exams are hard as hell. 10/10 recommend
I took Calc AB in high school and got a 5 on the AP test, so the first half of the course I was thinking this would be no problem. I was wrong. Three quizzes and the final are the only thing he grades. He is pretty funny and gets students involved. Overall a great teacher.
Worst math teacher I have ever had. Does not explain the materials well. So confusing all the time. Has a really bad handwriting. I do not know what people like in him. I hated every second in his class. Do not even think of taking him!
Kouba provides plenty of online resources for his MAT16A class which is a huge help for his midterms and final. If you're willing to study most of the material available you should do well. He assigns homework but it's optional. Also he'll answer questions in class if it's relative to the problem he is currently working on.
He is a great professor. His hand writing is sorta hard understand bc he writes in cursive but if you get used to it, it fine. His tests are a little harder than what he teaches but if you go to office hours and do homework, then you would probabaly get an A. You should put some time, effort.
If you dont go to office hours this class is very difficult. The practice exams are honestly nothing like the tests which are very difficult. I recommend him only if youve taken ap calc
Taken it for minor requirement. I actually learned a lot of stuff in this class. He is super funny and helpful. I was taking 3 other classes which require a lot of effort so I wasn't putting enough effort in this class however the generous curve saved my ***. I wasn't that into math but I am glad that I took his class. He also gives extra credit!
There were 3 exams and one cumulative final. He is a very good teacher and is very accessible for help. I recommend doing the homework he posts online and especially his practice exam because his exam questions all come from there.
His class is not easy. I hate math but his class was okay. He is great in office hours he dosnt give you the answers he helps you work through them. Lecture is really nice. He shows you problems step by step. Having the textbook helped me study.
A great lecturer! he knows how to teach! he is willing to help you during his office hours. there is no homework. his exam is similar to his practice exam. i start to like math. i did not make to his lectures in the second half of the quarter still got a B+. definitely will take his class again!
I've taken two quarters of calculus with Kouba and he is a fantastic instructor. His class is structured to make learning the material manageable. If you follow along with his lectures, homework, and discussion sheets, you will be just fine. His office hours are incredibly helpful, so go whenever you can. He wants his students to succeed.
Our grade was based off of 3 exams and the final. Homework was assigned but not collected or worth any credit. He had office hours almost every day, including weekends! If you don't do the homework and practice the material, you won't do well. He gives a lot of practice problems during lecture and at office hours.
Good prof, clear in lecture & reviewed topics from prior lectures, so very helpful. Honestly kind of rude in office hours, so beware (he berated me for writing side notes on my homework to learn). Very tough tests but possible to pass, do homeworks multiple times for practice. SASC tutoring in South Hall literally saved me, definitely do it!!!
Dr. Kouba is the best math teacher i have ever had. He is extremely smart and communicates well with the class. You know exactly what to expect on his tests from his practice exams, and he is available for office hours EVERY DAY!! make sure to go to receive help:) Plus he is super interesting. If you have the option be sure to take his class!
Kouba is a god
He offers so many resources. For someone without any math background, the class is awesome and Kouba is super helpful
Best professor I've taken in UC Davis so far, I don't even enjoy calculus and I looked forward to attending his lectures. Very organised and efficient, he is hilarious and makes calculus fun! I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
I was so happy to have gotten Kouba as my first MAT prof at Davis. He gives great lectures and explains everything so well, honestly one of the best math teachers I have had. Con. he does go fast but doesn't everyone when we are in a quarter system ? First Midterm exam was in 3/4 weeks. Study up and go to his OFFICE HOURS! Helps so much.
REALLY REALLY GOOD PROFESSOR!!! he doesn't post notes online because he writes on the chalkboard, but he makes everything very clear and he is engaging. If you go to class, you're fine. His practice exams are like his exams and he has all hw solutions online. Discussion isn't mandatory. People will go to his lectures even if they're not in the clas
Great professor, super nice guy. Holds so many office hours and always willing to help. He moves kind of quickly, it might be challenging if you've never taken calculus before. Never collects homework, so your entire grade is based on tests but he is very up front about what will be on them. Puts everyone in a good mood during lecture.
Dr. Kouba's lectures are very clear and organized. The practice tests are almost identical to the actual midterms. All homework, discussions, and attendance for both lecture and discussion are optional. He does lots of practice problems in lecture so it's pretty clear what to expect on the tests.
Best teacher I have ever had!! Super nice guy and is very good at explaining everything. He has office hours almost every single day (even the weekends). I would take him for every math class if I could!
He can be really impatient and rude with students, when it is warranted he have some patience, considering he is a professor. However, no one can deny he is an excellent professor. I have learned A LOT in his class. I recommend taking him.
Professor Kouba is a great professor! He is always willing to help. He has office hours everyday. His exams can be a little hard but if you do the practice exams and optional practice, then you will be fine. Not only is he a great professor but a great friend.
I love his teaching style.
Although I don't think I did too well in this class because of my lack of calc before college, I am so glad I had Kouba. If you don't have previous calc knowledge then the Math 17A series will be challenging overall but if you're lucky enough to start with Kouba then you should be fine. If you already know calc, then its a piece of cake!
This was my first class ever at UC Davis, and I was really nervous. However, Kouba made all my preconceived notions about college profs fly out the window. He gives awesome lectures with jokes here and there, and there are no surprises; his practice exams on his website look pretty much like his real exams. Highly recommend for anyone taking 21A.
3 midterms (each 20%) and 1 final (40%). LEARN TO WORK QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY. He gives you about 55 minutes to take each midterm which may seem like a lot but there's between 8 and 11 problems which require a ton of work to be shown. Kouba lectures pretty quickly but he does a good job and his office hours are extremely helpful.
Im really not sure why he is popular at UCD. I went to his OH once because I was sick and missed 3 classes, but he told me it was a waste of his time to teach me during OH because I didn't bother getting class notes from anyone else before showing up and i was the ONLY student there. he definitely picks favorites too. Class wasn't hard though.
His lectures are clear, he writes on a chalkboard so sit as close to the front as possible. He gives practice exams that are usually very similar to the real thing. He tells you what you are expected to know and offers extra credit at the end. He curves each test.
Best math teacher I have ever had. He comes super prepared and ready to teach every class. Actually made calc entertaining. He gives so many resources for you to succeed, so use them. Do the homework, discussion sheets, and practice exams because they will prepare you. The curve & extra credit is super. Textbooks & sol'ns on his website.
Fall Quarter 2016 Class is structured primarily off of his lectures. If you go to his lectures, you should be able to understand the problems clearly DO THE HOMEWORK (not graded, helps for practice) Discussion NOT mandatory, it's meant for students to complete an optional worksheet (doesn't affect your grade) and get help NO R-STUDIO/R Worksheets
Professor Kouba's ability to convey the course material is absolutely phenomenal, since he is clearly passionate about teaching calculus and he provides more examples than you'll ever need. He's definitely a solid professor and I would definitely recommend anyone to take a math class with him, no matter what time the class is.
Kouba is legit fantastic. He's hilarious, and his command of the topics is admirable. Sometimes he's too smart though, he'll forget that you're not a Math major, but honestly, I'd rather have someone like that with math than an idiot. Don't skip class. Practice, Practice, Practice. If you need help, the man has Office Hours EVERYDAY (Weekends too)
Grading is all based on tests, which he would try to give us extra time for when he could. Great teacher should you go to class.
Kouba was amazing! He really cares about the success of his students. He's always available for Office Hours, even on weekends, and when I had an issue with one of the midterms, he noticed and emailed me later that day to ask if I was okay. Very clear lecturer, practice exams just like the midterms and final. 100% recommend!
Kouba is a great professor that has clear organized lectures and a very organized website that helps you know exactly what you're expected of. It's still a hard class and I found his tests were pretty challenging but if you put the effort you can do well. He has a lot of office hours and ways to help you out.
Homework is optional but I'd recommend doing all of them to make sure you understand the topic. Also try to finish the practice midterms before the real thing. I really like how he derives formulas before teaching you how to use them, it lets you gain a more intuitive understanding of the topic. Considering a double major in Maths because of him.
Provides lots of examples which helps understanding the concepts. Tests are difficult but fair he gives practice tests that are pretty close to the actual test. Very approachable and gives 5-6 office hours a week. Class was overall difficult but he has clear expectations which can be met if you take time to study/ do the hw.
Great Calc teacher. Gives you all the resources to get an A as long as you apply yourself. Everything is optional. Grade is midterms and final. Cares for his students
The best professor for MAT21A. He is clear and concise in his lectures, and the material he teaches in class pops up in his tests. Hw is optional, but he stresses that students should do many practice problems to learn. Understand the material covered in class and do practice tests, and you will ace this class. Test outlook: 3 midterms
A lot of students including myself appreciate Kouba because of the fact that he cares about his students and is really easily accessible. However, I do believe he teaches in a very quick manner and if you're more of a slow learner (esp in math) like I am, he's not that great of a professor.
Prof. Kouba is a great math professor. He is has a wonderful and hilarious personality to keep lectures interesting. Class has 3 exams and a final. His criteria for grading is very clear. Really accessible-lots of office hours. He creates his own material, so a textbook is not really needed, except for the optional HW, which is posted on his site
The class will take you a while working on, but his website stuff, his clear introduction are all good sources for you. Even you are the people didn't take AP Calculus in high school, he is the best helper. Take his class. BTW, he is cute lol.
Kouba's the best 21A prof for sure. He offers optional hw (highly recommend you do because it will prepare you for the tests) as well as practice exams which are very similar to the real ones, and even Extra Credit!! Very accessible outside of class, even making the effort to have weekend office hours. Lectures are super clear, easy to understand!
Mat21A Fall 16' student here. Kouba was my first math professor at UC Davis. I'm now about to finish 21D and can honestly say, he is the best math professor I've had here by a country mile. Lectures are crisp and clear. Tests are reasonably difficult. Optional HW, but do them because they really prepare you for the exams. Great professor.
Kouba is the best teacher ever! I have him for 21A and even though it's review for me, it still made it challenging (in a good way!). he always throughly explained himself. His lectures are the best. Best personality!!! Office hours almost every day and review sessions on the weekend. 3 midterms.1 final. difficult!(bc of time restraint)speed is key
What a great pal/professor! His tests are very long so practice taking his tests in 50 mins. Difficult tests but you will manage if you study. His office hours are the way to go! 3 midterms and 1 final. Hw optional but helpful. Study hard, even if you have already taken calculus; I got a 5 on the Calc BC ap exam and I don't know if I aced the class
Take Kouba if you can!! His tests are not the easiest but his lectures are clear. His practice midterms are what is on the actual midterms, although they are a little harder. Do the homework and they will prepare you for the tests. He is so accessible outside of class and even has office hours on the weekends. He is hilarious:)
Kouba is the coolest professor ever! Take him! He is funny and teaches super well. He goes a bit fast but he has got a lot to cover. 3 midterms and 1 final. The practice tests are a little easier than the actual midterms. Everything is not mandatory but it is all there for you! Also don't rely on AP Calc because this class is hard. Just work hard!!
Kouba is a great lecturer. He always has a smile on his face, and cracks a few jokes here and there. Your grade is based on 3 midterms and 1 final. Homework is not mandatory; however, you should do them because it helps you practice for the exams. He packs a lot of problems (on exams) into a 50 minute window, so work quickly!
The professor gives amazing lectures. He provides examples to every topic we've covered in class, and explains the process clearly. Handouts, homework, practice exams, and solutions can all be found on his website. He has office hour everyday from Monday to Friday, and it's easy to reach him by emailing him.
Dr. Kouba is an amazing professor. He's very accessible outside of class during his many office hours especially closer to exam times and finals. I came in thinking it was gonna be an easy class, but I actually had to put a lot of effort in just to get a B+. Outlook: 3 exams every three weeks (each worth 100 points) and the final is worth 200.
A legend among mortal men! Kouba gives crystal clear lectures and works many examples. Tons of awesome OH available, even on Sat. Grade: 3 100 point midterms, 200 point final. Do the optional credit he writes on the board and HW probs. Exams are challenging but very fair. Practice midterms representative. Easy B/C, tough A. Pops collar like a G
Overall, Mr. Kouba is awesome. And the TAs are awesome, too. The practice exams are exteremely like the real exams, except for the extracredit problems (and you have to do those problems if you are aiming for an A+), the class is easy for an A, but it requies some work to get an A+ Just take him if you can.
Hes fantastic and hands down the best math professor Ive ever had. Lots of handouts, has a lot of office hours, and his class is very well structured. Very highly recommended. Make sure to do homework problems and the practice exams.
The best math professor in UC Davis !!!
Dr. Kouba really did everything he could to make the class as easy as possible. He didn't seem to answer questions very well and talking to him one-on-one was pretty intimidating, but for the most part he made everything really straight-forward. Take this class if you don't really like math but have to take 17B
Kouba really cares about his students and tries to make his class as easy as possible. I would definitely recommend him. He is kind of standoffish and as a person very intimidating, but he is a good teacher and triesto make his students pass.
Kouba is an awesome teacher! He gives great, clear lectures with TONS of examples. Lots of OH, even Saturdays sometimes. Intimidating 1-on-1 but helpful. 3 midterms worth 20% each and a 40% final. Practice tests are fairly similar to the real thing but the XC problem on each test is always very hard. Easy B w/ minimal studying. HMWK HELPS A LOT
BEST MATH PROFESSOR. Kouba knows math and he makes fairly difficult concepts so easy to understand. Had office hours 7 days a week and was very approachable and open to helping students. It's so refreshing to have a professor be so clear with students. Also offers extra credit and gives out candy! A true gem!
Kouba is the greatest! Hilarious and really easy to understand! I loved going to lecture!
Kouba is definitely the best math teacher you are going to find here. He is constantly offering help with the subject and makes class fun with his humor. He gives out candy during office hours that he holds 7 days a week. Definitely take him.
A very typical college professor. Organized, grades based on tests, and clear outline of material on exams. Do the homeworks, it helps you in exams a lot.
Kouba is a great math teacher and is very clear on his expectations. He doesn't use Canvas but everything can be found on his website. Homework is optional so I never did it. His lectures were fun and entertaining and was one of the best math classes I have ever taken!
The class is structured in a very clear way, 3 exams worth 100 points each and a final worth 200 points. The grading is based on a generous curve, and he's a good teacher. He's really just mean and intimidating to talk to one on one, he makes students uncomfortable and comes off as rude, at best.
Very straight forward grading scheme, Very kind professor. I worked 40hrs/week when I took 21C and went to any office hours I could, once i walked in 20 mins late to a midterm and he let me make up those 20 mins in his office right after. He cares about his students and simplifies the content to be easily understood. OFFERS EXTRA CREDIT
You won't find a better professor than Kouba at Davis. THIS MAN IS A LEGEND. I had him for two quarters and I was actually excited to go to Calculus! Hilarious, SO MANY OFFICE HOURS, and explains concepts crystal clear. I can't express how much I'll miss him!
I've taken Kouba for two courses: MAT21C and MAT22A. Both were taught really well--like everyone says, Kouba is a fantastic instructor. He has engaging lectures where he teaches you everything you have to know for the exams. Disc. section was not very helpful though--stopped going after a few weeks. Just focus on homework to prepare for exams.
Kouba is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are clear, well organized, and straightforward. He also truly cares about the success of his students and has office hours everyday of the week, including Saturdays. Hw is optional but recommended to do. In conclusion, he is a total gem. Take him if you get the chance to.
Very clear grading structure. Gives lots of homework, but make sure to do them/keep up because they prepare you for exams. Overall an amazing professor!
Best math teacher I've ever had! I hated math in high school but only because I couldn't understand it. Not with Kouba. I grasped the concept quickly and how to apply it to actual problems. He made math seem easy to the point where I only went to office hours once even though I had him for two quarters. And there's a generous curve. Take his class!
Whether you find math easy or hard, you are in good hands with Kouba. The way Kouba presents the concepts in lecture makes it crystal clear and sometimes even fun to figure out. Always keeps you on the edge of your toes. Office hours are a lifesaver, has extra ones on weekends before exams. Intimidating at first, but genuine & great sense of humor.
Kouba is a genuinely good person that tries to make class not miserable. His tests are hard but his grading scale is pretty fair. He also moves very fast so if you don't do the homework you're going to be lost and there are no homework grades only 3 midterms and a final. However he doe post practice test online and offers extra credit.
Taking Kouba's class was the best decision I could have made. Math is usually difficult for me and I never took calculus in high school, but I got a high B in his class. You should really do the homework, don't let the fact that its optional make you not do it. His tests are usually pretty fair, only one midterm was hard but he gave us a FAT curve.
Kouba gave really interesting lectures. I bought the suggest textbook, but never used it. The homework is optional, but I would suggest you do it, same with showing up to lectures. If you show up to lecture, take good notes, and do the homework, you should be able to pass easily.
Kouba is awesome. I'm terrible at math but he explains things so you'll understand them and gives a lot of optional practice to help you get it. Go to lecture, do the homework, go to him with questions, you'll do fine.
Im not a morning person but I signed up for his 8 AM class anyways and let me tell you that being in class that early was worth my time. Kouba is a great professor and actually cares about his students. You usually get extra time on his exams and theres alot of opportunity for extra credit points too! His exams were fair nothing too shocking.
Kouba is an all around great professor. He may move fast during lecture, but as long as you do your (optional) homework, you won't get lost. A very fair class graded on three midterms and one final. Kouba offers so many opportunities, such as extra credit, test curves, & office hours. A very respectable, hilarious, and caring professor altogether.
Kouba was a great teacher. His lectures were great and everything was clear. Homework isnt graded so you are only graded on three tests and the final but it is an easy class as long as you do all the work and pay attention to him.
Kouba is very helpful. Do the optional homework assignments and use the resources on the website and you'll be fine.
FAT!! CURVE!!! I got Fs on TWO midterms, and a B on another midterm. Not sure what I got on the final, but I passed the class with a C. I did not do any hw, did not pay attention in lecture, and did not do any practice problems. I only studied for 3-5 hours before each midterm. This class is basically impossible to fail. Easy A if you put in effort
Although, I didn't pass the class, Kouba was an amazing professor. He does a very generous curve and I would retake his class. He makes jokes every so often and lightens the mood. Does 3 midterms and a final exam. As long as you do homework and go to class, you should be fine. I didn't do hw at all and resulted in not passing (totally my fault).
Best professor. I missed him so much. You will definitely get an A if you do the homework and go to his lecture. So many people like him so his class is hard to register. You may see over 70 students in his waitlist but he definitely deserves it. He will manage to let more students in if he can (by moving to a large classroom.) Love him!
Hardest math class I've had! I'm pretty sure most see him as a great professor due to his resources and always having multiple office hours a week. Don't get me wrong he does teach great like many math professors, but the class is extremely hard if you don't do the optional homework! Tests are hard, basically if you know the material or not.
Awesome professor! Offers lot of office hours. Gets exams graded usually within 3-5 days. Funny, keeps math interesting. Tests super straight forward and offers practice exams. Exams difficult but very doable with lots of practice or get a tutor. 16B way better than 16A (just preference on material). Overall- seriously great!
His class is really tough! He's a decent professor, but math is math, you're obviously going to use your own time to learn by yourself. Class is basically graded through 3 midterms and a final which are all extremely hard! Do his optional hw otherwise guarantee fail unless you're a math genius. In my opinion, I wouldn't take his class again.
He is the worst math prof I have ever had. His lectures werent clear. He would get upset if you didnt understand his examples. I went to his OH to ask for help on the hw. He was rude and told me I had to figure out the hw on my own. I took his class based on his ratings on here but I wish I would have never taken this class with him.
Took the entire 16 series with Kouba. Great professor, makes math interesting and more bearable. Make sure you do at least some of the problems from each of the "optional" hw. Curves every test and has so many resources available to you. Tests could have been graded easier. Go to class. Tests are exactly similar to problems in class.
He is a good teacher and really helps you get ready for the tests if you do all the homework. Some of the TAs grade tough though and give little to no partial credit. Homework isnt graded and there are 3 midterms and a final that determine your grade.
HW is never turned in, posts all the answers and how to do the problems which is really great. Only grades MTs. Lectures are funny, very passionate about teaching. Always communicates well, office hours are nice to go to. MT are a bit hard unless you practice a lot (he gives a lot of optional practice questions). Allows calculators, partial credit.
This is absolutely a class you need to attend lecture for, as none of his notes are online and everything is done on the chalkboard. Overall, Kouba is an absolute legend and he made an 8am calc class enjoyable. I really understood the way he taught and the tests were pretty fair.
Kouba is my favorite professor ever, and I failed. Do the problems, attend office hours, study your butt off. Great guy.
Great lecturer and teacher, tests are the usual. Gives extra credit on the test and outside of it. To easily pass go to office hours for even more help, do the hw it helps a lot for learning as you go and for midterms. He may seem rough and tough, but he is a great guy who really cares and will help you.
Kouba was so helpful throughout my whole journey in the 16 series. I had him for 16A and 16B and he was so supportive. While he doesn't like funny business, if you are a serious student, he will help get you where you need to be in your understanding of calculus. Plus, his extra credit surveys can make a difference between a whole letter grade!
I took his class after I had already taken the content in highschool. His class was extremely fair from my point of view and even though I already knew the stuff he managed to keep my attention. He is picky about how the work for his problems is done so make sure to keep that in mind.
I love Kouba! Best calc professor I have had this far. I had him for Spring 2020 online, and he was so understanding, thoughtful and really made math easy to learn online. If you put in the effort, you will do well. His OH are very helpful and he makes things super clear. Take him if you can!
Kouba was the best math professor I've had at Davis was far. His lectures were extremely helpful and he's great at explaining things. The final was worth 50%, which was a lot though.
Definitely cares about the well being of his students and is willing to put in lots of time with students outside of class. He grades super hard on notation which is a bummer, and doesn't understand technology.
In all my years of taking math from high school to college, Kouba is the best prof I have ever had. Gives out a lot of material that you can use as study guides. Take him!!
3 midterms and 1 final. He's great at teaching and showing you how to do problems. However, you really need to spend a lot of time out of class in order to succeed. He can be a very tough grader and he expects you to all of the problems his way. Otherwise, you lose points on the test. Overall, he's a nice professor who helps you learn calculus.
Professor Kouba was a really good teacher this quarter even though the entire class was online. Although he's a bit of a tough grader, he curves all the tests which makes it to where even if you're not good at math you can still pass the class and do well. I think he's understanding and I plan on taking him again!
kouba is really chill and all, but his class is really hard. the only thing going in the grade book r the 3 midterms/final. all his lectures are just going over math examples. and since everything is online, his lectures last up to 2 hours even though its a 50 min class. there is also no office hours, he would rather you talk to your classmates 1st
Only taking notes on what he puts on his website will not do much for you in terms of doing well on tests. Although hw is not collected or used for the grade, DO THEM. A lot of his exams are 10x harder than anything on the notes so it takes a lot of self-discipline to stay on track. He was great engaging during lectures though, if that helps.
You can't expect an easy A from here unless you are truly a math whiz. He has a very useful webpage that has notes, videos, and practice problems. It's only graded on 4 tests but gives you a curve on each test. You really have to put in the work for this class. But he is a really sweet and approachable professor. I like his way of teaching.
There are 4 tests that are graded with a large curve! Hmwk, although optional, helps u understand the material. His website is gonna be your best friend to prep for the tests! The practice tests on the website are literally the same. Really understanding and makes lectures fun with his daily kombucha ! If you get the chance, take him!
I don't know what it would be like in-person but this quarter your grade was based on 3 midterms & one final. His website is super helpful & every exam problem was modeled off a homework, lecture, or practice problem. He is genuinely fun & makes lecture enjoyable. Lectures are all walk-thru examples. One of the best math teachers I've ever had.
The professor explains the examples clearly and you are able to ask questions at any time. His website is super useful, you can find all the detailed notes and practice tests. I never did the homework questions so I'm not sure the difficulty. I just did the practice tests before the exam and everything is fine.
Professor Kouba may be a great professor in person, but his class did not transfer over well to an online format. Lectures range between 2-3 hours each, making watching them very hard. Grade based on four exams and they are graded harsh (though there is a curve). Prof is hard to reach, and very hard to connect with. Don't recommend for online.
Good teacher. Kombucha
He is a good teacher but a tough grader. He would take all the points off even if you miss a small step on the exam and it really hurt your grade. He also reject to see you explanation again after you report your confusion about your exam. Take someone else if you can.
Easily one of the best math instructors I've had. He's incredibly knowledgeable but doesn't hesitate to slow down and explain problems in an easy to understand way. He's also hilarious and you can tell he truly cares for his students. I took this class during COVID and the three tests + final decided your grade. HW is optional but very helpful.
I was scared to take calc but Kouba made the class very manageable. He has all the material youll need to understand on his website with videos to watch. I would go to his lectures even though its not required, a lot of the problems he goes over will be on the exams which are the only thing you are graded on. Thankfully the curve helps you out!
YOU WONT GET AN A IN THIS CLASS BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY, EVEN YOU TRIED TO DO 90% OF HIS HW AND THE FULL PRACTICE TEST. YOU WILL, UNLESS YOU ARE A MATH GENIUS. I DID FINE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND EVEN TOOK AP CAL AB&BC BUT KOUBAS TEST WAS LONG AND MEASURABLE. NO EC AND EACH TEST AVERAGES WERE ABOUT 60%. DO NOT TAKE HIM PLZ EVEN PEOPLE SAID THAT HES NICE
He's a great professor. He's kind and funny and always makes lectures interesting and light. His website is super useful and well done, where there are lecture notes and plenty of practice problems. He is retired now, unfortunately before I could take him again for my last 16C class, but I liked him so much that I wanted to write something anyway.
