Dr. Duke is awesome!! Be ready to do daily short assignments on readings but believe me its worth it. This class was super fun, informative, and interesting. If you show up to class , participate, and do your homework you will pass. He gave us really good study guides and mid-termfinals were online. DO YOUR STUDY GUIDE!!
Amazing professor. Knows what he's talking about. Reading journal due almost every class but simple enough to do since you have to do reading. Very clear about expectations and content of class. Would def take again!
Loved his class! He makes you work for your grade but all the material is interesting and often profound. I really enjoyed the activities that he would have the students engage in every class. Made you actually learn and digest instead of just lecturing. I would take him again for sure.
dr. duke is the best teacher I ever had! so love him :) there was only two exams which consist of key terms have to define and give example & some essay questions, but its take home exam and given study guide in advanced so have time to answer questions ahead so day of exam just have to copy and paste :) theres weekly readings and journals
Weekly reading journals that can be time consuming. Only a final, with a study guide a week ahead of time (key terms, and essay). One paper, and lots of opportunity for extra credit (only allowed 2). overall good professor, is very passionate about Sociology of Gender..I definitely learned A LOT
Dr. Duke is a wonderful teacher, his class wasnt as bad as one would expect BUT he still give lots of work and makes you work for your grade. dont come in later than 10mins because he wont let you in! purchase the books because you use them for every class (homework not in class) overall sociology of gender was a great class i highly recommend him!
Duke exposed me to so much new information, I will absolutely never forget this class. There is a lot of homework (multiple summaries due every single class) but every single reading is worth it. I cannot wait to take another class with him.
I enjoy his classes, even though it can be a lot of work, but if you do the work you will get a good grade. He has reading journals due every class and his midterms and finals are papers. He is very precise in what he's looking for in your work and likes you to use examples to make sure you understand what he's teaching.
Dr. Duke is one in a million. He's the first Sociology teacher I've had who assigns homework for every class on top of attendance, but he's a cool dude and wants you to get the most out of your education since we are paying him to teach us something. You don't get out early, but he gives extra credit and is relatable. His lectures are funny too.
Let's put it this way... If you're not intending on majoring in Sociological Research I would NOT reccomend his class in particular if you need to fulfill the Research Methods requirement. Expect a TON of work.
This is the first time this class is being held at East Bay. It was amazing class, amazing experience. Every class there is a journal due and its super easy and straight forward. Textbooks are expensive but necessary. He makes me glad I am a sociology major. Loved this class and professor!!
HW & Quizes based on book, totaling 45% of your grade but he NEVER lectures on the material. Picks on you when HE thinks you're distracting, which is SUPER distracting to everyone. PP's useless. He is a good teacher and good guy. The class looks more intimidating than it is. Its very interesting class. I wish it was mandatory. Id take him again.
I get the appeal of him but I personally found him hard to deal with. Lots of reading, makes everyone in class talk, berates those who want to contribute more then others and isnt clear on essay expectations. I consider myself a decent writer and student and was put off my his attitude and teaching style.
he is cool but get ready he's workload is that of 3 classea put all together. your to busy trying to pass class than i assure you; you will not pass the rest of your classes.
Dr Duke is a very passionate professor. He knows his stuff and he encourages students to learn more about different ethnicities. He gives great feedback. Will definitively take him again.
This was my first quarter at EB and I am glad I took Dr. Duke. Amazing professor. With his lectures, he helped to clear up any questions you would have before you even asked. There is a lot of reading, but honestly, it is worth the workload. A very interesting class that teaches you a lot of immigration background if you didn't have any or much.
Dr. Duke is an AMAZING professor! His class isn't easy, and you do have to work for your grade. However, his syllabus tells you EXACTLY what he expects from you. Every assignment that you have to do, every quiz and every test (midterm and final), is laid out for you. If you're willing to do the work, then I definitely recommend this professor!
Second time taking his class and I would definitely recommend. Weekly reading journals are due but it isn't a crazy amount of reading. Keep up with the journals and ask for help whenever possible, he is great and giving feedback and helping with assignments .
Great Professor. Reading Journals due every week. Journals are sometimes long and boring but help you better understand the lectures, and write the essays. He isn't really a hard grader. Tells you exactly what he wants you to do, and gives you the whole midterm and final so you can come in and receive feedback before you submit.
Dr. Duke is pretty straight forward in terms of letting you know what he expects from the students. The reading journals may see like a lot of work but they are extremely helpful if you start them early. I would definitely take him again if I could. I learned a lot about race and enjoyed his personality through out the course. Great Guy!
Dr. Duke's courses are very academically rewarding and challenging. His classes are not easy but as long as you put in the effort he will return the favor. Be prepared to read and show up to class every day! His rubrics and syllabus are easy to follow and give you plenty of time to prepare for materials and class lectures.
Very good professor. His coursework is mostly reading journals that are due every week, 2 exams and 3-4 vocab quizzes. He expects a lot from students but he makes this clear on the first day of class. I would definitely recommend him just be prepared for the amount of work you will have to put in.
Duke is a great Prof to learn from. He's classes are not fluff classes and you do have to work. That said you will learn things here you won't learn else where. Weekly reading journals are required, do these well before they are due! The readings in the beginning are dense, but they get easier! Give yourself time to do them properly, have fun!
Dr. Duke is amazing! Yes, you have to read a lot but they aren't boring. They are insightful and helped me learn a lot. Class discussions are inclusive and he respects the class' point of view. He tries his best to accomodate everyone. He's also accessible outside of class, and replies to emails promptly. Just keep up with the assignments!
I took his Immigrant Community Engagement class and really enjoy it. The way I could engaged with the community I volunteer was an experience in which I learned many new things and skills. It is one of the best courses I have taken.
Took his Soc 3520 and it was amazing. He really is a great professor because he is super passionate about this subject. Take him if you can! Promise that you'll learn a lot and have an amazing time in his class!
I've had Dr. Duke for two classes already, both for Immigration and for my Race and Ethnic Relations course and I loved it! He's very clear on his grading criteria and if you need any help it's as simple as contacting him on Blackboard or going to his office hours. Dr. Duke is amazing, he gives a lot of work however it's super interesting!
He is an amazing professor. I can truly say I learned a lot from his class. He is straight forward since the beginning and makes sure you know that you must earn your grade. Make sure to do the reading and homework on time and you will be good. He truly cares about his students and their education. I would definitely take again.
He is great. This is the first time I've had him, too bad I am a COMM major or else I would take him again. I took this class to fulfill GE area but overall great. Over all, he's great its an easy A if you actually do the work and study! If you don't care and don't go to class this isn't the class for you.
This class requires a lot of ready. Class attendance is vital and graded. If you are late points will be taken off. You know how sometimes you take a class and you can pass with a solid A and learn nothing. This isn't the class. You will learn and earn A if you do the work. You can't be a procrastinator to pass this class. He is nice & respsectful
Disclaimer: I took this class during a shorter-than-usual summer class. This class was intense. Dr. Duke DID NOT go easy on us because it was a 3.5-week session. An entire 11-week term was smooshed into less than a month. There was a lot of reading and a lot of writing, but it was worth it. I learned a lot and highly recommend this class (maybe co
Great professor! This class is a lot of work but its do able . He'll break everything down for you. He takes everything step by step. He gives great feed back. If you have to take research methods i highly recommend taking it with him.
One of the best professors on this campus honestly. He is difficult and will make you work hard but he is so helpful and genuinely cares about his students and wants everyone to pass. Amazing person!
If you're planning on taking Duke, be ready to the best experience. This class is toughbut trust me when I say it's worth the stress. If you don't attend class or do the assignments don't enroll in this class. This class will push your limits and help you become that much better. If your lazy this is not the class for you. Best experience ever
Amazing Professor! This class is literally an internship class, so if you don't have any experience in the field that you're interested in this is the class for you. Very generous and very helpful when things go wrong. This class will give you experience to put on your resume. Recommend this this class!
Amazing! I have taken Dr. Duke for Race and Ethnic Relations, Immigration, Research Methods, Community Engagement, Capstone Project and Capstone Support. He is seriously the best sociology professor at East Bay. That doesn't mean he is easy, but trust me it is worth it because you learn such valuable material. Take his class! I learned so much.
Dr. Duke is an amazing professor. I have taken him for at least 4 classes and he's the best Soc professor at CSUEB. He really makes sure you understand the material and will work with you if you are confused. Dr. Duke is truly passionate about his student's success inside his class and out. f you don't pass his class you didn't give any effort.
Really understanding and committed to his students doing well in his class
Yes, the class is load work heavy and you do have to read a lot along with reading assignments but they compliment on helping you grasp what you need to do with big assignments. But he is always open to helping you during office hours and answering your questions in class. He gives the best advice, challenges you, and prepares you for grad school.
Community Engagement is a great class to take. It is ideal volunteer work is needed if you have zero experience. Take advantage! Weekly Journals once a week! Dedicated Professor you wont regret it!
The classes that Dr. Duke teaches are very good and they you always get out of class thinking a new different way about life and social issues. He is inspirational. He is a little strict but he pushes to do your best.
Dr. Duke is absolutely amazing you will be so glad that you take him.
Amazing teacher, strongly suggest to take his classes
A very knowledgeable and easy to speak with Professor! He is very real and honest. He is not afraid to share personal stories of his own journey. If you want to learn in a fun challenging environment Dr Duke is your man!
Dr. Duke is an awesome professor! He knows how to make the classroom environment feel very welcoming, including, and empowering. The work load is pretty common to how a standard class is, with an assignment due every week, as well as community service hours due every week. Overall a great professor and inspiring individual!
Dr. Duke is a very understanding professor. If you don't finish all the homework he will give you some credit. His class is worth taking because he is very clear on what he wants. Make sure the reading is done because there is homework on it but very easy.
Half of the attendance was meeting once a week and the rest was volunteering with a community partner. Weekly readings and exercises from the book. Workload is appropriate. He is understanding & cares about student growth. Drops lowest attendance/journal grades. Gives 2 extra credit opportunities. Attendance is 20% of the grade, come to class!
His lectures are very interesting and awakening
He is a very dedicated and well knowledged professor who also cares about your grade. He gives great feed back and is always accessible outside of class.
Dr Duke is a phenomenal professor! He gives a reasonable amount of work and makes your earn your grade, but he is reasonable and clear with what he wants at all times. He is always readily available and very attentive as long as you seek him out. His classes are very engaging and fun and he offers extra credit. His lectures are very helpful.
Dr. Duke is amazing. Yes, the class involves a lot of reading and participation on your part but it's all worth it; and if you put in the time/effort, you will get the grade you want. 2 opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester. His lectures and class activities really help you learn the material. And he drops your lowest grade 3x.
Take his class(es) only if you want to be serious about your education. Improved collegiate reading and writing skills are a by-product of taking his class. All the course work (assignments, quizzes, and exams) is relevant to the readings and lecture materials. The class equips the student with theories that can be applied practically in the field.
Professor Austin is honestly a great professor, he knows what hes doing and talking about, his class isnt hard but its also not easy. Its a lot of work but its not impossible to do. His midterms are a little more difficult but he does give study guides before hand so USE THEM. Overall great professor would definitely take his class again !
He is a great teacher and the journals are super easy to do! Attendance is mandatory but make sure to write the essays before the actual test because he only gives 2 hours for those! But overall, great experience in learning from him!
Dr. Austin is a great instructor, he is accessible outside of class n makes sure that every student participates. He tells the students @ the 1st day of class what will be on the exams n the students are giving the opportunity 2 complete the exam before they are handed out. Don' t get me wrong you will have 2 earn an A in the class but it is doable
I took the 2 week winter intercession class with him and woah, A LOT OF READINGS! (like will make u pull an all nighter kind) His class is definitely not an easy A class but TOTALLY WORTH IT! He is also very inspirational and you wont ever be bored in his class! He also gives out 2 extra credit opportunities!
I took this online class during the covid-19 lockdown, so the in-person experience might be different. There is a LOT of reading, but if you do all the reading and take notes, you'll be fine. The "exams" are essays that you write beforehand, and quizzes are open-note and not too hard if you take notes. He's very passionate about race and justice!
Requires to read two books. Turning camera on for zoom isnt mandatory. He made us do weekly reading journals that consists of summaries within 100 words and definitions. His grading was based on the reading journals, 4 quizzes (multiple choice), an advocacy letter (rough and final draft), attendance and gives several extra credit opportunities.
GREAT professor. Clear, concise class structure. Took in Winter Intercession '20 which was super hard--do not recommend unless you have a free month to dedicate to it, but the material and teaching style were all above and beyond. Especially given the current climate, I'm really glad to have taken this class. Do the work, you'll pass.
I took Dr. Dukes environmental sociology class and it was amazing, I wish he taught more classes! Two required books, weekly journals (100 words per chapter + vocab), and an advocacy letter essay (draft and final). Gives detailed feedback, quizzes are based on the books so make sure to read. TAKE HIM! Extremely caring and accomodating professor!
I took his winter intercession course. I got no sleep and lived off of caffeine. SO much reading and writing, but he's a forgiving grader. If you show that you care and put in the effort, you'll get at least a B in his class. Instructions and grading criteria were clear. Only complaint was how hard it was to get the textbook, there's no digital one
Dr. Duke is the best professor I have ever had. He is very passionate about his work and really cares about his students. Great experience!
This was my first class with Dr.Duke and honestly it was one of my best classes I have taken at CSUEB. He does assign a lot of reading but its not that bad and definitely manageable. He has weekly journals from the readings that are due at the beginning of class. Overall great experience, highly recommend !
I took Dr. Duke's Soc_325 course on Race and Ethnicity and it's been one of the most eye opening experiences i've had at CSUEB. He gives well written readings and as well as lecture videos that provide a better understanding of the topic and gives a study guide for the exam. Just make sure to follow up with the reading journals and attendance!
Dr. Duke is passionate about the material, lectures are context on reading and responsive to feedback. Everything is laid out and structured day 1, with there being about 1 assignment a week except on weeks with quizzes. He is open to dialogue and forgiving when it comes to deadlines if you need it. My favorite professor and class this semester.
Dr.Duke is a good professor, lectures are great! Just show up for attendance and do the homework. Its not hard work, just time consuming.
Professor Duke cares about you learning and engaging in class outside of class. He wants you to gain knowledge from the reading material and to become a critical thinker and writer. Citing correctly is important and of course sticking to the syllabus, oh and communicate! Thanks for a great fall 2022 semester Dr. Duke!
Great understanding professor. Weekly reading journals can be a lot at times but I got through it.
You will learn a lot about himself and others, especially for yourself. The more you learn the merrier. He offers Hybrid class, it's important to have in-person environment, and he is very well-organized. haha everyone in class gets a turn to speak their mind or ask questions. There's extra credit, and you can enjoy lunch with your professor.
I love Dr. Duke bro, he's very helpful and understanding. He isn't the average professor who will watch you try and fail, he will see where you need help and work with you to make that area better. When you want to give up, he inspires you to keep going . VERY HELPFUL PROFESSOR!
For Fall Semester 2023, he's amazing!
You have to be MENTALLY BE EFFICIENTLY PREPARED. This class is a lot of research in-depth based subject learning. I am an under-grad student & he expects graduate level student work achievement. His main assigned research project is very advanced especially for an under-grad! Attendance & participation matter it is 10% of your grade! Be careful!
One of the best professors I've had in my years of uni. Dr.Duke is not only an inspirational professor but he is definitely passionate about his course, which makes the class run smoothly. Be ready to read, the book we had would sometimes have long chapters and sometimes short. But if you have a steady schedule there should be no problem.
Great teacher seems like he actually cares about his job and his students which is rare. His passion for the subject really shows. The only thing I didn't like about the class was the flashcards. There were moments I had the answer but it seemed like the only time I ever got picked was when I didn't know the answer. I love this dude though.
I initially took this class as a requirement, but Professor made me care about the environment. You can tell he's passionate about teaching. Only downside is that he has flashcards with your names in order to call on you, so pay attention
I took this class due to the recommendation of my advisor. I never expected to gain so much knowledge about the professional world. Dr. Duke's assigned textbooks really help you prepare for the workforce and prepare you to apply to grad school. Dr. Duke cares immensely for his students and it shows. I highly recommend taking any of his classes.
in person, once a week, course. In person courses, are the best I would say. You get to know your professor, classmates, and the environment is different than an online course. Dr. Duke, is far by one of the best full time professor in the Sociology Department at Cal State University, East Bay.
You have: 11 Reading journals 4 Quizzes 1 Group project 2 extra credits Be ready to participate in class. Good luck!
Dr. Duke is seriously the BEST! Homework is to read and do a journal every week with some quizzes. He's funny and really loves to teach. Be prepared to get called on bc he uses flashcards but he doesn't care if you get it right/wrong. Your lowest attendance and assignment grade gets dropped. You do have to interview 2 immigrants for the final paper
Dr. Duke is a wonderful professor, he is hilarious and cares about his students. While it is all a lot of reading, throughout the semester it will become much easier to read. Come to class and take notes, submit things on time, and you should pass this class with an A.
Homework is a reading journal every week. Dr. Duke is an amazing prof but there's a lot of concepts that we didn't go over which sucks. Final is an advocacy letter. The textbook is pretty expensive but the library has a copy and there are pdfs online. Be prepared to get called on but he doesn't mind if you get the answer right or wrong.
Dr. Duke is hella cool! His class is super inspirational, and an amazing way to learn about the intersection between environmental science and sociology. He's a very caring professor, but takes his rubrics and assignments seriously, he will make you participate in class at one point or another, so reading and being on top of the class is important!
Dr.Duke was amazing! Def should take his class
This class was almost unbearable. I'm uncertain if these reviews are fake, but beware; if there are any other professors available, please choose different. The professor is very passive-aggressive and belittles students who disagree with him.
Prof Duke is amazing! His classes were lectures once a week and 4 TA recitations a semester. There weren't too many assignments and instructions were always clear. Reach out to him if you have questions in the class, he responds quickly and is understanding. Would recommend him to anyone taking sociology!!
Dr. Duke was an excellent professor. Attendance is mandatory, but his workload is very light, and he gets straight to the point. We would have vocab. Quizzes every week, and it was very easy. As long as you email him about any issues with your attendance, he'll understand.
Dr. Duke is a great professor. He's clearly passionate about what he teaches and makes that enthusiasm contagious. His lectures are engaging and thoughtfully organized, and he always finds ways to connect sociological concepts to real-world examples that keep the class interested.
Be prepared every time you go to his class because you do get called on and get asked about the reading. He's a great professor and you can tell that he really wants you to succeed in his class and actually wants you to learn the concepts. His attendance is graded though so keep that in mind.
I took him for SOC100, there is a lot of reading but his assignments are easy, clear, and repetitive. Once you get the hang of his class it's smooth sailing the rest of the semester. Getting a hold of him is also fairly easy. Attendance is a big part of your grade btw.
Inspiring class lectures that always left me more knowledgeable than I walked how in.
Dr. Duke's class was phenomenally put together and he was exceptionally dedicated and wonderful in conveying the information, teaching the subjects, and making every student feel welcome!! by end of the semester I felt the knowledge I picked up was out of this world!! Take any class of his and you won't regret it!
Dr. Duke was one of the most amazing professors I've ever had. You can tell teaching is his passion and he made the lectures so interesting. I learned so much this semester. He is a very supportive professor and understands that people have lives outside of school. Hands down a GREAT professor!!
I really enjoyed taking Professor Duke's SOC-100 course, every class he always seemed to convey a sense of passion towards the subjects he taught about, and how he wanted his students to learn about what's going on today's world. Just be aware that attendance is graded, however just properly manage your time with his assignments and you're good!
I really enjoyed having Dr.Duke was my professor for soc100. Workload is very manageable. We had weekly key term quizzes, InQuizitives and 2 exams in total. Dr. Duke is kind, respectful, and creates a comfortable learning environment. His lectures kept me engaged the whole time. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
1. Attendance matters- but why pick an in person if thats an issue? 2. You read and watch videos each week for a reading journal+ vocab (which took a few hours 1x a week). Once you get the hang of it, honestly its not too bad. 3. The once a week lecture is laid back but very informative! I left more woke about the world around me! 4. Fair grader
Amazing class about sexualities! There's a reading journal + mcq quiz every week, and attendance is mandatory. Dr. Duke is the best prof and cares about his students. There's 1 group project which is a PSA video of a topic you choose. Final exam is MCQ. The CORE has the textbook; use the book scanner on 2nd floor so you don't have to pay $60.
