Mr Willoughby is not a bad professor by any means. The semester I took his class was the first semester he taught at Texas State. He was kind and tried his best to make things interesting. I personally had a hard time learning from him as he had a tendency to get off topic or teach with the expectation that we had as much knowledge as him.
Professor Willoughby is such a great guy, everyone loves him. So so so nice, cares about teaching, gives curves on tests. Take his class if you have the option to choose your professor. Chemistry can be tough for students, he makes it easy to understand.
Professor Willoughby was a great professor. I had him for his first year at Texas State and he was really good at lectures. He would write notes with you during class and that helped me a lot. He really wants everyone to pass, so he curves test grades and gives enough homework to help you keep your average up. Highly recommend, especially for chem.
This professor was amazing! The class was super hard because there is so much information given and not enough time to learn it, and you may get behind in his class because he really wants you to understand the material. His homework, quizzes and test are hard. But, he is very caring and tries his best to help all of his students.
Professor Willoughby was an amazing teacher, he did great for his 1st year at this school. I did all of the extra credit and ended up with my final grade being over a 100! As for the textbook I didnt really use it much. His lecture notes were enough for me, I like how he takes the notes with you majority of the time. His personality is refreshing.
So glad I had him for my first year of Chem. Must attend class to understand the material. He gives you ample study material and resources. Very kind and understanding. Class cannot be passed without studying so don't expect to listen and learn from him only. Would recommend him to anyone taking Chem 1.
Very glad I got him as a professor. I had taken two chemistry classes in high school and never understood a thing before his class. 100% take his course if you struggle with chemistry.
First time taking chem but worked very hard in this class. A good professor and cared but flew through the lectures and I had a hard time learning a lot of the material. Tests are decently difficult but all are curved. Lots of online homework and quizzes but honestly can be a grade booster so not bad. Overall opinion is just went way too fast
Good guy and professor give lots of extra resources to learn if you don't understand his way of teaching with videos, powerpoints, and notes. He does go fast so you must attend lectures to know what is going on.
Probably the most amazing professor at Texas State! He really takes his time to make sure you understand the material and provide many resources. Weekly homework assignments but unlimited chances on them, along with extra credit, quizzes are online and exam are in person, and he curves exams! Definitely recommend to anyone going to take chem.
Chemistry is one of the hardest courses I've taken, and Willoughby made it seem so easy! His office hours are super helpful! He's very patient, will be happy to help, and make sure you have understood the material. He is very well organized as well. He gives practice tests and reviews for exams. Definitely dedicate time to study this course though.
whatever you do, DONT take this class. 3/5 people I know who took this class with me failed. I also know people who have taken him TWICE and still failed. He does give a lot of extra credit but you're better off taking another professor to be safe.
I love Prof Willoughby and I wish he taught chem 2 so I could take him again. Chemistry is super hard but he gives lots of extra credit and amazing curves on the tests. And attend his office hours with missed hw or quiz questions!!!! That is the sole reason I got an A.
Should've listened to the comment about 3 out of 5 failing the course. DO NOT TAKE unless you are a Chemistry major. This class will eat up so much of your time only for you to be tricked on tests. Chemistry is already tricky enough no reason to trick more. Class moves QUICK, if you fall behind on one topic you are essentially done for the semester
Class was an absolute mess. Started the class off super behind and its difficult to keep up with his constantly changing due dates. The material is difficult, but nothing that isnt manageable. His first semester teaching this course, and the only word to describe it is unorganized.
Professor Willoughby is a great professor. This class is a lot of difficult material, but he gives so many resources to help you succeed. He also curves the tests, and gives out extra credit.
If you do the homework and go to lectures you should be okay, just ask for help if you need it. He offers extra credit and posts tons of resources. He really wants his students to do well, but the grade you get will reflect the work you put in.
Chem is not my strong suit and was hard for me. You have to attend every single class or else you will fall behind. SI sessions are required, and the exams are taken in person and are hard. Made us do assignments in groups and some iclicker questions. Does give out learning curves and some extra credit. Expect to spend a lot of time studying. Funny
I initially failed chemistry with this professor the first time I took it bc I didn't attend class or do the HW. I chose this professor again bc he was nice and respectful. He truly cares about making sure the class understands the topics. DO NOT take his 8am class/50min period class bc he tends the fall behind due to in-depth explanations.
Willoughby is the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. Lectures are face paced but he is dedicated to making sure his students understand what he is teaching and will explain in depth. He provides a ton of supplemental instruction on his canvas page. Exams are hard but have heavy curves and extra credit opportunities.
Hands down one of the best professors I've taken. Do the Practice Exams (if you do these there is no reason you shouldn't pass) ,stay on top of homework. This is a class where repetitive practice is needed, once you practice enough it comes easy. Beware this course is time intensive. He shows alot of enthusiasm and will answer any questions gladly.
BEST professor, make sure to go to class and keep up with the homework. Make sure to go! There is extra credit, and he does everything in his power to make sure class is passable. He is super caring and passionate about chemistry. It is still a really hard course, and you need to spend time studying and practicing it
One of the best professors I've had. he gives so many resources and extra help. It is up to you to do it and learn it but he gives all the resources and more to help with such a hard class. Very lecture heavy, wouldn't recommend skipping not even once.
Professor Willoughby was fantastic! The course is definitely lecture-heavy so show up to class. He gives lots of extra credit on the exams, and his grading policies are set up to the point where it's very hard to fail the class as long as you put the effort in. He gives a lot of outside resources and has consistent office hours. Definitely take him
6 tests, homework / quizzes due sunday night. Do the practice exams, if you understand those you will do fine on tests. You must go to every class, participation is heavily graded in this course. The tests pop up every 2 weeks until the end of the semester where you have test 5 the week before your final exam. Rigorous course. Time Consuming.
Best chem professor I have ever had. Never has someone made such a difficult and confusing topic so easy to digest. TONS of resources to help and has practice tests EXACTLY like the exams. If you can do those you will be ok. A LOT of extra credit but you have to work for it. Attendance is not mandatory but you will struggle if you skip.
He is a fantastic professor who genuinely cares about students and will answer any questions you have. He is a heavy lecturer but he doesn't bombard you with too much information that is difficult to understand. You will have to dedicate time outside of class to study or you will barely pass. This class is difficult but he guides you through it all
It's a difficult course that takes outside time and effort to do well. Despite this he does a great job of making things understandable and giving outside resources for different methods of teaching the same topic if you don't understand his way. Take notes the entire lecture, grind for the 100's on homework, and study for the tests and you'll pass
I took him for chem 1335 this year , he was ok , exams were not hard nor easy , no extra credit , lectures were terrible , i would rather take him over the other dude Paterson or some shit he failed half of the people who took his class for chem 1335
He did what he could to ensure teaching was effective and time was used efficiently. Many online resources offered to help with outside learning. This is a hard subject to learn, but this professor made it interesting.
He is one of the greatest professors at Texas State. His lectures may move fast but he gives so many opportunities to receive redemption on exams and practice worksheets.
Professor Willoughby is amazing!! His lectures are great, in my opinion. he has youtube videos that are helpful to watch before class. You can tell he's passionate about what he does and cares a lot about students. He offers a lot of extra credit and redemption exams that can help you boost your grade. He's also extremely sweet and easy to talk to.
Willoughby is my fav professor by far at TXST. His class will require outside studying, but it is just a lot of material. He wants everyone to succeed and is so available to help in his office. He makes videos that helps and offers many paper assignments that help. Will replace lowest test with final and drops a couple of assignments.
This class requires a lot of studying and preparation for the exams, but Professor Willoughby made it so much more enjoyable. He goes pretty fast and then even faster so make sure you know how to keep up. Do any extra credit he gives you and make sure to go to class and watch the videos he provides. Definitely my favorite professor!
Dr. Willoughby is an amazing chemistry professor! He speeds through lectures, but he makes sure to cover everything in detail. You need to do homeworks, exit tickets, and group assignments or else you will easily fail. His practice exams are the best way to prepare for the actual exams, and he gives respectable and fair curves. Take him if you can!
Exams were a little difficult. He'll refund the most missed questions and offer extra credit. He provides lots of resources including recorded lectures which are invaluable in this class.
Professor Willoughby is an amazing professor, he truly cares about his students and gives us all the resources we need to succeed. Chemistry is a hard subject especially to teach but he made himself available as well as taught in many ways to make sure we got it.
The lectures were just him reading from the slides, anytime we asked questions his response would be a smart a$$ one. Most people have not taken chemistry since sophomore year and he skips the important basics/ concepts of the units. I have had better professors and teaches teach science classes, With all honesty I recommend taking someone else.
Available after class; very sweet; has tons of resources and practice questions(might be failing BC you aren't trying); does curve;
He's really nice and passionate about chem. The only thing is that the course itself goes really fast so it might be difficult to keep up. Homework is all about practice and you have infinite tries until you get a 100. He also posts a lot of resources and practice problems. He does his best to help as long as you put in the effort.
Amazing professor! He was really easy going and made the classroom environment safe enough for people to ask questions. I took him for summer session and he was very understanding about how fast paced the class is. Curved exams and gave extra credit opportunities. Take him!
This class was the best chemistry class I could ask for. Professor Willoughby gives you all the resources and more to succeed. I recommend watching his videos before class and taking notes on those then having class lectures be a reiteration, it might take some time this way but it helps A LOT. Definitely take his class for Gen Chem 1.
Gives good and plenty resources. Attendance not mandatory but exit tickets and group activities done in class are a good portion of your grade. He gets off topic often and ends up rushing the material. I feel like he sometimes shows the harder way rather than the easy way. Overall great professor though.
Willoughby is an amazing teacher. Yes, the class is hard, but it's chem what do you expect? He posts everything from lecture videos, slides, extra examples, and worksheets. You literally have everything you need and he is very kind and caring. I would take him! He does rush through materials but he only has so much time to lecture.
His lectures aren't the most organized, but a little time outside of class, watching other videos on the material helps. He gives extra-credit that can bring your grade up half a letter, so do them. Test can be hard, average on them was around a 70, but if you study a B isn't too hard to get. Not the best professor, but far from worst.
Chemistry is a hard class. Prof. Willoughby, while frazzled most of the time, makes the class structured to assist you in the best way possible. Attend class! Do the extras outside of class and you should be fine.
The best chemistry teacher I have ever had, just wow. Do yourself a favor and take him
You generally get out what you put in and that I do appreciate. Hes a very kind guy and good professor. He loves what he does and gives lots of practice opportunities.
Mr. Willoughby is able to explain the information in a way that makes the concepts at hand seem almost easy. He grades in a way that allows for you to replace your previous test grades with the following exam grade as long as it's higher. As long as you go to class, you will definitely pass.
I'm going to be real with y'all. Do NOT take Willoughby if you're not strong in chemistry. He goes extremely fast and expects us to know a lot of the material already. I will say, the extra credit and other assignments helped my grade so much at the end but I struggled all semester. He's a cool dude but he was not the right professor for me.
Willoughby was amazing for gen chem 1, and I wish he taught gen chem 2 so I could take his class again. Was not an easy class, but he offered extra credit and BIG curves for every exam. His lectures were very fast paced, but he was well-organized and funny. His canvas offers PLENTY of additional resources if you don't understand something.
Willoughby is an AMAZING professor! The first time I took chem was with Mcvay, and I got a C. I had a wonderful experience with Willoughby my second time. He lectures exactly what's going to be on the exam, and hands out practice papers to make sure the students understand the concept. Went to his office hours multiple times and he was very helpful
Willoughby does his best to teach the material well to students, he has lecture videos that go over important topics, skill sheets that are extra practice and study guides for exams. There is weekly homework, exit tickets that count your attendance and group activities that you have to participate in. but easy to get a good grade
He was a great professor, he puts lecture videos online because lectures are really fast, he also puts other you tube videos if you want more information. He also gives you many opportunity to be successful you just have to make time to study the materials he gives you. GOOD LUCK
He's a pretty good lecturer, definitely cares and wants his students to understand the material. It's a lot of material, but he tries his best to explain and cover it all. You'll do good in this class if you really try
While the class itself is super fast-paced, the professor cares a lot; Provides an abundance of extra resources and worksheets to help you practice the content. Pay attention, study and go to the office hours when you can. Make sure to keep up with assignments and take advantage of the unlimited attempts on homework and seconds chances on quizzes.
10/10 would take him again. His lectures move very fast, so you have to pay attention. Tests are cumulative. So, 2/3 are from the current unit and 1/3 is from past units. However, this helps you because it keeps you prepared for the final exam. Amazing professor, cares about students, and I highly recommend him! Come to class and you will be fine.
He's a good lecturer, but you should know that the class is extremely fast paced. He gives 5 points to your total grade if you do some online extra credit. He gives lots of resources to do well in his class, so make sure to take advantage of those definitely! If you put in the work, you'll do great. He can be moody sometimes, though lol.
Professor Willoughby will SAVE you in chemistry! He is one of the better professors. Class isn't mandetroy but there is a lot of in class activities and exit tickets that will serve as extra credit at the end of the semester. They literally saved my grade, went from a 84 to a 92 with a 74 on my final. He is very likeable and very approachable.
This man is truly a godsend professor. He is the reason I became passionate about Chemistry. I just changed my minor from biology to chemistry after taking this class. He is knowledgable and you can see just how passionate he is about sharing his knowledge for chemistry. Genuinely cannot recommend him enough. You won't regret taking this class.
He gives so many opportunities for success. So much extra credit is given and each topic has varying methods of explanation incase his first try didn't resonate with you. He has spent a lot of time on this course and perfecting the material for his students. Love him
Phenomenal professor. His lectures and lecture videos are very clear and easy to understand. He genuinely cares about the subject and the students. Best chem professor you could ask for.
Best chemistry professor I have ever taken in my life.
An amazing chemistry professor. Gives extra credit and curves tests substantially. You do a lot of in class problems that help prepare you really well for tests. He gives practice tests that are super helpful. Homework is time consuming but prepares you for tests. Make sure to go to class because group assignments are a big part of your grade.
He is an amazing professor! 100% would take his class again.
He provides so much ungraded material and videos to practice with, and he really cares about his students. Chemistry will not be an easy A but taking it with Willoughby is the closest you can get to that
Willoughby was a good professor. Although we were behind for majority of the semester, he made sure to cover everything we needed to know. Personally, I am bad at chemistry but somehow ended up with an A. The homeworks are manageable and your tests can get replaced if you do better on the next one. I would very much recommend him!!
Does not reply to emails, No extra credits(not at least in 1341), nice lectures, engaging
He changed all grades from unweighted to weighted 2 hrs before the final. My grade dropped from a B to a D-. His homework and quizzes take SUPER long. and exams are 75% of your grade. don't fail them or you will not pass. Attendance not mandatory but there are exit tickets and in class work so It kinda is.
genuinely the best chem professor i could ask for. very heavy lectures but nothing too hard. overall very good at teaching and has so many resources in the modules if you're confused. to the people mad abt his error with the weighted exams, yall should've known something was up when yall were bombing every exam and still had an A...anyways..
Professor Willlougby is an exceptional professor because he puts his best foot forward but you won't do well if you don't do your part. Attendance is necessary because you will miss a lot if you skip just one class and there are exit tickets for each class. Not really any homework and the tests are worth more. His grading style is kind of generous.
I TOOK HIS CHEM 1320 CLASS LAST SEMESTER, not 1341. Outstanding professor ensured I understood the material, but it was a foundations class so it wasn't too difficult to begin with. Very lenient with exam grades, as if you did badly, study for the next exam and get a better grade, which will replace the previous exam grade.
He teaches very well and is easy to understand, but if you don't participate you will fail. He crams a lot of material into lecture, so it's very fast paced. There are exit tickets, in class activities, quizzes, and online homework, but it's very easy to get 100's. If you pay attention and practice often, it's not hard to succeed in this class.
Willoughby is an amazing professor only because he offers a lot of resources for studying and exams. His lectures are very fast-paced, but he offers videos to watch beforehand which are much more helpful. His grading style is test-heavy, with 75% of the final grade based on just exams. Without passing exams you are not passing the class.
Mr. Willoughby is fast paced and this is a class that absolutely needs studying, however he is accessible outside of class and is happy to help. I personally got over a 100 on all the exams by taking the practice exam that is given to us multiple times. This is NOT a hard class if you study well and use your resources! Best professor I've taken.
I came from a very weak chemistry background I knew nothing, I didn't even know how to study but let me tell you professor willoughby is by far the best chem professor at Texas state! Chem isn't an easy subject but as long as you study and attend lectures and work hard you will succeed please don't hesitate to choose him!
One of the best professors.
If you're taking gen chem 1 or 2 you have to take Willoughby. Lectures are fast and there's lots of in class activities, but higher exam grades replace the previous one and there's lots of extra credit. He's super nice and literally wrote the work book so he can answer any question you have. He's one of the best teachers in the department.
Highly recommended if you're nervous about chem. I thought I hated chem until this class. Attendance is recommended for the in-class assignments. There's long HW for each unit, but they all have unlimited attempts so it's an easy 100. He offers so very good extra credit at the end of the semester.
Highly recommend if you're nervous about chem!!! I thought I hated chem until taking his class. The HW are long but thy have unlimited attempts on each problem so they're easy 100s. He also offers helpful extra credit at the end of the semester. Attendance is necessary for the in-class assignments.
Honestly he wasn't a bad professor, it's just that he is very fast paced and often deters from the lectures. There are about 3 units in this semester that you have to learn and teach yourself because HE runs out of time. If you are a very structured and organized person, he is not for you,
This professor was actually the worst professor I have ever had. He was very rude and unprofessional at times. Wouldn't show up to class some days. Tests are 75% of your grade! You're paying to teach yourself because he won't teach you! The LA's taught more than he did. Always ran out of time. By far one of the worst professors I've had at TXST.
Professor Willoughby is one of the best professors I have ever had. Now, chemistry can be difficult, so if you're not willing to put the effort in to succeed, don't bother. There were numerous resources available to help you understand. I took this class accelerated this summer semester and ended the class with a 100.19. PUT IN THE WORK!
He is very great at teaching the material. Even if you don't fully understand it and don't do so well on the exam, he drops one at the end of the semester and gives you a bunch of extra credit to help your grade.
Races through the material and is NOT teaching; he doesn't know how to teach and doesn't see/care that rushing through isn't actually teaching. Always runs out of time. So many people fail this class; you have to teach yourself everything, the lectures are pointless just rushng through. No learning happens in that classroom. Awful teacher. Avoid.
He is a very passionate semester that goes off topic from time to time on interesting subjects to keep everyone engaged.
The test average is always an F. Professor has no sense of time and goes over every class. Constantly taking work home to complete because we didn't get to it in class. Sends out emails on Saturday's saying we must watch videos before class because we are multiple lectures behind. Because he's constantly behind he rushes through material.
Willoughby is a very passionate professor. He goes through slideshows EXTREMELY fast, however, and that sometimes makes it difficult to understand things... especially when it comes to some of the more math heavy concepts. Make use of the practice materials he gives you and you should be good to go on exams.
AWFUL Professor, DON'T TAKE. Lectures are EXTREMELY rushed and lack any value that helps you understand what's going on. No partial credit on exams; he will take off all points on a problem if you don't use his form exactly or miss any units.
Honestly he's a good teacher he just goes super fast but i understand since its a lot of content. Just focus during lecture and do practice exams they help a lot. He also doesn't do attendance codes/sheets but he does give exit tickets which are part of a grade. He usually lets you take them home though.
Great professor with a very decent teaching skill. Grading is easy and test is not that hard.
Worst professor I've ever had. He teaches gen chem 1 like it's Harvard Law. Absolutely no leeway on anything. Lectures are a joke and tests are hard. All 4 tests had an F average. He expects you to spend 12 hours a week on chem. He extended the extra credit and curved the final 16 points so people would pass his class. This guy can't teach!
great during lecture, made the subject interesting, but we fell behind majority of the semester so it felt like we just rushed through important lessons. The course felt non-linear going from one lesson to another it. Exams are accumulative 66% new 33% old material. extra credit opportunity, and supplemental resources. Would still highly recommend
Even though I did well enough in the exam, we cut off my marks by a huge factor. He doesn't care about partial credit, which students it hard to convey their knowledge. Most of the questions appear from his exam review; however, he will ask you to write the math or procedure for any answer. You have to follow his method and technique to do anything
He was an okay professor, pretty strict about showing work exactly his way. He offered extra credit, but the test averages were usually really failing. His review videos were solid though. If you put in extra effort and actually use the videos, you should be fine.
