Wonderful Professor! Entertaining, but still able to teach hard material.
funny dude, talks about his own life as he relates it to the class
Great class... hes sooo funny!
You gotta love this guy!
Great guy, funny as hell, would take anything he teaches!
Talks so quickly it is easy to get very confused

This Profs awesome. Funny as hell, I would definitly take more classes with him.
Definately one of the better / best philosophy teachers. Grading structure of 2 or three essays per term is very good as well.
best teacher ever
Tried so hard to get me to understand philosophy, never gave up - almost had me too! Sadly I slid by with a D, would loved to have taken more classes with him, but obviously philosophy isn't my thing! Great prof, wish there were more out there like him.

This guy is great and said he isn't religious because then he cant **** and.. "there goes my weekend" .... how much better does a philosophy prof get? lol didn't study a word and got an 88 on the midterm, Duncan is the shiznit people

what a brilliant guy!!
he is great. The best teacher here!
Great guy, great lectures. Recognizes when he isn't connecting with a student's line of thought, and will adjust his thinking. Great comments on essays. Always appears desperate for a smoke break, so often lets you out early.
Brilliant, thoughtful, dedicated. I credit Duncan with transforming my writing style. He not only addresses your arguments in papers, but also makes excellent stylistic suggestions. He constantly challenges students.
My favourite prof at dal, his classes are interesting and he makes the material relevant to student's lives. A truly gifted prof.
The perfect picture of a phil prof. He will gently tear the numb veil of your former life away and expose you to the world. Take a deep breath, and take this class. Who thought a science student would ever fall in love with philosophy...
Very laid back, casual, and engaging.
Loved him! And I don't even like philosophy. Everything a teacher should be.
Definetly the coolest teacher I have had yet at Dal.. He explained everything thoroughly in his class several times (anything that was to be on a test he clearly repeated at least 3 times) and was extremely helpful and encouraged involvement. Brilliant, fun & hilarious! Take him any chance u can get
wonderful, just wonderful
Hilarious, Love his Lectures
He's the type of teacher that will make the class, and the tests pretty easy for you as long as you just memorize the work (for those that aren't interested) but for those interested in the subject, you have the opportunity to get much more indepth with the studies and he will help you learn and experience all that you want and can! Best prof ever!

less than helpful. even after putting in lots of effort, his instructions were unclear and he wasn't really willing to help.
Amazing Prof! The best one I can say I've ever had at my 3 years at Dal. He's so smart and so funny. He makes the material way more enjoyable and understandable. Take a class by this prof is you can, you'll love him.
An inspiring prof. His style makes you wan to get interested. Hard but very fair.
Amazing prof. Very funny and clear.
I love Duncan...I love his elbow patches, his references to himself in the 3rd person and how he smokes a pipe. He is clear, funny, helpful....yeah!!
I loved Dr MacIntosh! He is brilliant, hilarious, and made me not want to miss a class. Grading is fair, content is hard (what do you want? It's a philosophy class)If you are unhappy with a grade on a test, he'll regrade no problem. He returnes e-mails more promptly than any other prof I've had. Duncan is an excellent professor, plain and simple.
Dr. MacIntosh is awesome!!! His lectures were great, always very funny and entertaining, yet very relevan and intelligent. He made philosophy very easy to understand and related well to his students. He was very clear, welcoming and helpful to us all. He rocks, definitely take this class with him, he will make you love philosophy! Very caring!
An excellent prof. Goes over everything three times if he's going to test you on it. Makes answers to the midterms available so you know where you went wrong. Very smart and interesting but not at all condescending. Listens and takes class questions seriously. Really funny too! Highly recommend!
I have taken every class taught by MacIntosh. He is an amazing Professor and always ensures that there is sufficient time for each student to ask questions in class. Is always available during office hours, and gives insight into papers and course material. Take one of his classes, you won't regret it.
Im a science student and he was by far my favorite prof during 1st year. The material is a little hard, but he gives plenty of time for questions and narrows down the topics for the exams so that you have a good chance of doing well. recomended for anyone even slightly interested in philosophy. His great sense of humor is a bonus.
I love this man. I named my cat after him!
Duncan is potentially one of the coolest people I've ever met in my life, as well as a completely brilliant professor. You'll be won over in the beginning by his charming elbow patches and philosophy jokes, but you leave the course knowing you had a remarkable experience with an unmatchable prof.
Best speaker I have ever heard! very inspiring! Funny and keeps you interested!
Very good professor. Projects well, explains concepts clearly, answers questions promptly. Best professor I've had. Also very personable and easy to talk to. Very rare to find a professor with this much regard for his students.
The Dunkster is incredible. Although sometimes speaks at a mile a minute and is hard to hear, his wit will make up for it! He makes the subject hilarious and so interesting. He is very approachable and helpful. He's a rare prof who very obviously loves the subject but is also able to teach it very well. Favourite so far!
amazing lectures! funny! involves class! time for questions and discussions at end of every class
I went to many unis and studied for 14 years. Duncan remains one of my all time favs. It was his class that turned me on to decision making research; now I teach it myself. I had the pleasure of being his TA once. He'd deliver a great class, then head to his office to correct the unnoticeable mistakes he made. Near perfection. Truly inspiring.
Amazing, passionate about his students and his subject, great speaker, makes the dullest of philosophy exciting. Great and simplifying things, all you need to do is show up and study and its a breeze. No real homework, readings are always complimentary, great interesting person, one of a kind professor
Amazing prof! He keeps the class entertained, is extremely brilliant and I slowly find myself falling in love with him.....
Where to begin! Duncan is absolutely amazing. He's hilarious, intelligent, and modest. He is genuinely passionate about the material he's teaching and it shows. He's entertaining & makes hard concepts very easy to understand. He allows students to write tests at a different time if they are stressed, & will gladly re-grade your test if you want.
My favourite professor at Dal! Classes are entertaining, and I remembered all the material because of his enlightening stories and analogies. Take a philosophy course for an elective! You'll enjoy it, and probably get an A.
very nice and understanding, great overall prof
Most interesting teacher I've ever had. Makes everything interesting and opens your mind to things you wouldn't have even considered beforehand
Dr. MacIntosh is an amazing professor. He's funny, approachable, encouraging and can make even the most dull philosophy interesting. I wish he could teach all of my classes!
Great prof! Very little textbook use which is nice. If you show up for class you will do fine. He's great at explaining everything, hilarious and really open to questions. If you ever can't go to a test he'll do his best to accommodate you or help you if you need it. Fantastic prof!
Duncan is the most understanding professor I've ever met. I had an extremely rough semester and he gave me extensions when I didn't even ask for them, and breaks that . I will forever be so grateful for him, and will always regret not getting the full advantage of his amazing teaching.
amazing prof, makes class interesting, xplanes everything very well, is funny, overall great prof
Prof MacIntosh was the best prof I had a dal. I had no knowledge of Philosophy before his course and I loved it. Sometimes the topics were difficult to understand but he was more than willing to see students outside of class to go over notes/papers/exams. Gave me extensions without me asking for them. He is an amazing prof. Definitely his class
Amazing professor! He was extremely interesting to listen to. If you go to the classes it's easy to do well.
Love this guy. He's very interesting and blunt. He does talk a little fast, but it's manageable.
The best prof I've had so far. If I were to take philosophy at a further level, I would definitely try to attend one the courses taught by him! I enjoyed listening to him very much!
Amazing prof. Makes difficult concepts clear and easy to understand. It's a very note-heavy class, so get ready to be writing nonstop! Also very accommodating - always tried to make sure all his students were comfortable with the exam time.
Amazing professor - he's thorough (always reviews what was learned in the class prior), hilarious, makes what a lot of people would find a dry subject much more tolerable!! He's extremely easy-going and friendly...and just really cool. Helps you out however he can. I wish he would teach me another course!!!
Best prof I've had so far. Crystal clear, and willing to help students as much as he can, aka makes deals and is human : )
loved him as a prof! did everything he could to make you do well! did reviews before tests! made dry info seem interesting! could pass the class with flying colors and not read the textbook because he did such a good job in explaining the material! good-hearted, and friendly! overall and amazing person who does what he does great!
helpful professor, does review before tests, does not use powerpoint or any online tools, speaks too fast.
Greatest of all time!
While entertaining, I found that most of the material was spoon fed and very superficially covered. Additionally, some of his off color jokes were a bit off putting. Overall, great prof if you want to be entertained without having to think too much.
Best professor of my entire university experience hands down
He's by far the best teacher I've ever had, and maybe the smartest man I've ever met. He is almost too accommodating, you never have to worry about losing a grade just because something is late, he'll always make arrangements for you.
Best prof. Wastes no time, loves to engage with class, and truly knows what he's talking about.
This is the best prof I've had at Dal so far. Duncan is hilarious, cares about the students & takes time each class to individually ask every student if they have a question. He reviews the important stuff from the previous classs & clearly outlines what you need to know and the lectures are interesting. This class has saved my view on philosophy
God he is the best prof at Dal, he'll even tell you himself. This class is made amazing by him as my last philosophy professor completely ruined my view on philosophy, but Macintosh revived it. If you can, def take a course by him. He's so funny, and he'll make sure your ideas are heard. This is one of those classes where anything said isn't wrong
Really great prof - Interesting lectures, great sense of humour, super understanding about tests/grades/attendance.
One of the most influential profs i've had. Saved my mark and view on philosophy after the X semester of the course. Inspiring, understanding and so wise. Delivers the material in an interesting, straightforward and humorous way which makes it easier to engage in the class and do well. Knew he would be an amazing prof from day one.
Prof was an inspiration after the previous semester when I almost dropped the course, I'm happy I didn't because I really like Philosophy. He has a natural way of delivering his lecture and the discussion segments after each lecture are very interesting. You won't be disappointed.
Truly amazing professor, changed my views of philosophy after almost dropping out after first semester with different (awful) prof. Every single lecture was top, I even shed tears at the end of his last lecture. Do yourself a favor and take any of his classes, such a pleasure!
I thought he was a great professor. He was funny and easy to understand. I'm really glad I got him!
If you're in any way considering dropping out because you had a boring, low-energy prof (like I did with Professor Jeffers), then stick with it so you can get Professor MacIntosh. He explains things in a very easy to understand way, and tests are relatively easy as he makes sure to grind the information into your skull, in a funny, interesting way.
Honestly, MacIntosh was an incredible professor, he was super funny and says things multiple times so that you completely understand the concepts. I would totally recommend taking this course even as an elective, as it is interesting and so long as you show up to class and listen you will do well.
Dunc is honestly such a G. Absolutely HATED the X segment of the course and Dr. MacIntosh completely changed my perspective around and made me love philosophy. He makes everything very clear and prints notes for the class so you don't have to write your own. Take his class if you can!!
Professor MacIntosh was fantastic this semester. His exams were fair and he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He's very enthusiastic, and it shows throuhgout every lecture which made me enjoy coming to class. After the first semester with Prof. Jeffers I was thinking of dropping it but I'm glad I didn't.
Best philosophy prof at Dal
Im not a fan of philosophy but i would definitely take this class again
Very passionate about the subject. Can tell he cares avout students and them doing well. Everyone should take one of his classes if they can
My favorite prof I have had so far
Duncan is so intelligent. You can't help but be intrigued by everything he says. He not only is incredibly smart but he's extremely kind. I went to his office hours skeptical because he is so sure his students will do well in the course but after discussing content with him, I was completely relaxed. He truly cares about his students.
Duncy D is honestly such a gem. Made me realize I didnt actually hate philosophy after the X part of my course, I just didnt like the teachers until him. Really engaging lectures and a funny guy who genuinely cares about students
Great guy, loved DJing his class, good humour and actually cares about his students!
best prof I've ever had. such a good teacher and made philosophy interesting!
Dr. MacIntosh will always be my favourite professor. The way he presents the content makes it fascinating, he interacts with students throughout the lectures, makes up the funnest jokes. In my class, he saved the last 20 minutes for questions and discussions about the material, easy grader, he cares about his students and the way he teaches. 12/10
Professor MacIntosh is undoubtedly one of the best professors at Dalhousie, if not, the best. His teaching style compared to other profs is very unique as he does not show slides or write on the board. He just talks and at the end we discuss. He is a great speaker. The tests are fairly easy, just study off the study notes.
Duncan was one of the best profs I had this semester. He was able to make a pretty boring subject interesting. He wants his students to succeed. There was two tests and one final exam. Just go to class, take notes and you will pass. PS. Sit at the front of the class, he is a very fast talker and doesn't use a mic.
Dr. MacIntosh is easily the most respectful and compassionate prof I've ever had. Not only are his lectures interesting and easy to engage with, he is a prof who truly appreciates his students ideas and cares about them as people. Would take a class from him again in a heartbeat!
Really cares about his students and wants them to do well, even in a class of over 100. Anything that you will be tested on, he'll make clear and repeat many times. Any question you ask he'll make you feel like you're the smartest person in the world. an amazing prof
Great proffessor. He will make you feel at home and welcomed in the classroom, meanwhile he will spark a curiosity in you that you didn't know was there. He has an incredible way with words and it usually only takes him one attempt to explain almost anything in a perfectly clear manner. Highly reccomend Proffessor MacIntosh!
Excellent prof, super engaging lectures. Super knowledgeable and passionate about the material he teaches. Genuinely cares about students, and if you are unhappy with your marks he will look for ways to help you improve them. Would highly recommend anyone to take his classes!
Ducan is the best! His lectures are always interesting and it's clear how much he cares about what he teaches and his students. He made me want to learn more and always made sure to answer questions and clarify where needed. Couldn't have asked for a better experience, would totally recommend this course to everyone! GREAT TEACHER!
never a dull class. he engages with students' ideas/questions sincerely. some of his jokes are unprogressive/off-putting but if you can look past them it's worth it (plus you can challenge his ideas in class in a judgement-free environment)
This is the most amazing professor I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, he is absolutely brilliant and it is so refreshing to see someone so passionate about what they teach. I genuinely looked forward to his classes and his insight was always so encouraging and well articulated. He encouraged student participation and input.
No need to buy the textbook, he never really uses it
Duncan is by far the best professor you will ever have. This is my second course with him and I loved it. He is one of the most well-spoken, charismatic, and hilarious people you will ever meet. He cares so much about his students and thoughtfully engages with everyone. I recommend that everyone take his classes because Duncan is amazing.
Simply put: Duncan MacIntosh is a gift. Expect amazing lectures, interesting topics, a caring professor, very reasonable tests, small readings, and an engaging question period. Study in groups for tests, ask questions about the material back and forth. The textbook can be useful but he makes sure to provide good explanation and notes in lecture.
Don't get me wrong; Dr. MacIntosh was extremely funny and was obviously invested in the material he was teaching. However, the grading scheme was quite odd (3 tests that make up 100% of your grade, with no final exam but the final test happening right before exam period, which I don't know is allowed).
Duncan is the goat, nuff said. Very helpful if you're having trouble and is very nice and funny
I legit made an account just to leave a review on how much I love this guy. He is such a kind man who truly cares about his students + their success. I genuinely am so excited to go to his class every week. He makes taking tests like a dream; he gives you everything on the d2l and his review lectures are amazing! if you have a class w him get hype!
This is my first year he is the best teacher i had since my high school. You can give whenever you want and if you feel scared you can reschedule it. He is funny and has amazing lectures . I attended almost every class and didn't even need to study after class. No homework. Amazing prof understands students and actually helps.
My favorite professor, I have had him twice now and I love his teaching style. He understands his students and has a lot of respect for us, and will treat you like an actual person. One policy I really loved was that if you didn't feel ready for a test or paper due that day, he would always give an extension so you can do the best work possible.
The test structure for this class was two 20% exams and one 60% final. Which may sound crazy but actually isn't bad at all. He's an absolutely amazing lecturer and by far my favorite professor I've had in university.
This dude is literally the goat. His lectures are super interesting and engaging and he's funny. He cares a lot about his students really wants them to succeed. Favorite professor at Dal for sure.
Professor MacIntosh is the king of the charitable reconstruction. All of his courses proceed by reconstructing an argument for the class, then prompting and engaging with discussion. Any topic in his specialties is a must take. He can be hilarious (not always on purpose) and is not stingy with awarding excellent grades. Thinks highly of students.
Professor MacIntosh's PHIL1500 is a gem - engaging lectures, reasonable tests, and a great support system. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the textbook.
I'm conflicted. Duncan's lectures were amazing and I actually felt like I learned something, However, when I wrote the tests, I thought I did well but got lower marks because I didn't write enough. It was only a 50 minute class and there were quite a bit of questions so if your a slow writer beware or make sure to get accommodations.
He's a good prof and cares about you doing well, but this isn't an easy elective, you HAVE to study a ton for the tests, and it is a lot of material. He will test you on every theory so you have to know everything. There are only three tests, and you have an hour to complete them. He is very kind and will let you redo tests or get an extension.
Professor Maclntosh is an absolutely amazing professor. He is very flexible with evaluation, hilarious, and has very entertaining lectures. He is so respectful and truly passionate about what he is teaching. Very wonderful professor!
Duncan MacIntosh is the best professor at Dalhousie. Especially in his upper year courses, we get to interact with his own papers and he guides inspiring discussion each class.
The greatest professor I have ever had. This man is absolutely brilliant, inspirational, and so damn caring. He goes the extra mile every time for his students. His lectures are absolutely entrancing, and I wanted to be present for each one despite undergoing health issues.
Amazing prof! If your thinking of taking this class my advice is to attend every lecture the content builds on top of itself and will be confusing to you unless you put in the effort. Best philosophy class I've ever taken the and the way Duncan explains things is very effective and entertaining! Couldn't reccomend it more.
Still the best professor I've had yet. If you cant go to lectures dont bother with the class, they are by far the best part.
Took his philosophy class and it has truly been such a great experience! He tells you what you exactly what you can expect for tests and is open to accommodations. He gives amazing lectures that are super interesting. Definitely would love to take a class of his again! Highly recommend for an elective class
Amazing, amazing, amazing. We loved each lecture and found the tests to be very relevant and fair. I would highly recommend to anyone to take the course or any course by Dunc. Extremely accommodating and he cares for students. Also, extremely funny. Hall of fame for professors!
Best teacher I've ever had at Dalhousie.
Professor MacIntosh is the best prof I've had at Dal so far! His lectures are super engaging and he gives clear review videos and notes to ensure that you know exactly what questions will be on the tests. Really funny and makes concepts easy to grasp with lots of examples.
He cares about each student
Great class would definitely take again. Very very engaging and learned a lot
