He's great! will open up his office at any time just ask! A great great great great guy!
Calculus is a tough subject especially calc 2 and 3, if you are going to take it I recommend taking it with this professor
Prof. Belt has been a great first impression of Mizzou. I would highly recommend taking his class. He is very willing to work with students and wants the bests for everyone. I recommend you go to office hours and get to know him, he's great!!
Very very good at explaining information with examples. I'd highly recommend for calculus 1 students!
Dustin Belt was wonderful and infinitely better than my calc teacher in high school. The guy has a super chill no bs attitude and witty dry humor. He breaks things down step by step and explains concepts super clearly. The tests in this class are very fair but can be challenging. It's really easy to lose a ton of points b/c of silly mistakes.
Good, solid choice. Couldn't have asked for a better first math professor.
This was my first time taking calc. While it is a challenging course, I couldn't have asked for a better professor. He explained clearly and gave fair tests, even though they can be challenging. You typically get 3 HW a week, but it is for a grade and helps you learn so I found the HW to be beneficial. Overall, I highly recommend this professor.
Dr. Belt is a great choice for Calculus 1 (Math 1500) students. He teaches all material very thoroughly and prepares you well for each exam. It is important to come to each lecture because each section is only covered in one class period, so it would be very easy to fall behind if you start skipping classes.
Lectures were easy to learn from and practice exams were very helpful
Professor Belt actually made it enjoyable to go to a calculus class, which is not what most students would probably say. He could move fast at times, but having 2 discussions per week made it easier to break down slowly. One drawback is that his practice tests aren't very comprehensive, so prepare to do extra work.
Dustin is a Clac God and really breaks what could be a hard a scary subject down and makes it easy. You should really study and start doing his practice problems about 4-5 days before the test and if you can memorize what the answers are and how to get them or just understand how the homework problems should be solved you will pass for sure.
Dustin Belt really is a calc god. Go to every class if you haven't taken Calculus before. The practice exams are useful for learning material, but will likely not be very similar to the exam you are given. There will also be a small curve at the end of the semester, but don't count on this to change your grade much. An 88 is an A- this semester.
I took AP calculus in high school and barely passed. I took Dr. Belt this semester and all of sudden every thing was explained clearly and very easy to understand terms. Very unlike my highschool teacher. He is amazing at what he does. He goes slow enough for kids who don't understand but fast enough for kids who do.
He is funny, helpful and intelligent. And all around good instructor.
Dr. Belt is the way to go for Calc 1. Lots of people retake Calculus 1, like me, and if you retake, you're in good hands. If you've never taken calculus, you're still in good hands. Belt is very patient, thorough, and organized. Amazing Canvas page to help yourself stay on task. Show up, study the practice exams, ask questions, and you'll succeed!
I should start with his eyes. The way they sparkle when he talks of maximums and minimums. How his voice booms through the lecture hall and fills your soul with an undying passion for second derivatives. The subtle assertiveness you sense when given a tough grade, but you understand because you know you would never be good enough for Dustin Belt..
Professor Belt is a great professor, and I'd recommend him to anyone. He's clear about expectations and runs his classes well. He's also easily accessible outside of class. Show up to lectures, because it's difficult to decipher his notes, even if you're sitting in class and attendance is mandatory.
Hes a great professor
Dr. Belt was the best calculus teacher I could have hoped for. He was very accommodating for my flights and illnesses, and really cared that the students understood the material. He is very knowledgeable and the class is fast-paced, but if you get lost, the TAs are wonderful and happy to help. An amazing experience for a challenging subject.
What a great teacher, he makes calculus easy to understand and explains WHY things work instead of just asking you to memorize formulas. Took calculus 1 in high school and learned nothing, but now I feel very comfortable after taking his class.
he gives good examples of problems that would be on an exam and he explains things very well
This was my first calc class at university, and I am so glad he was my professor. Answers any and all questions, his lectures are always very engaging and funny.
Great professor!! Really wants everyone to be successful in his class by giving them all the resources they need. 10 quizzes, 14 HW, 4 exams, iclicker. Drop 2 quiz, 2 HW, & 2 iclicker. If you have 85% on HW & iclicker then you drop lowest exam.
If math is not your forte, then yes, you might find this class difficult. However, Professor Belt is an incredibly amazing professor. He will help you get the grade you want to get. His lectures are very straight-forward, incredible teaching style, very friendly. If you're taking math classes, take as many classes from Belt as you can.
Prof Belt is a really great teacher, you will definitely miss him when taking calc II. His tests are very straight forward and as long as you do the practice exams and the homework you should be fine but watch out for some random true/false or multiple-choice questions that are over the stuff you talked about briefly in lecture.
I took the summer online version of Professor Belt's Calculus 2. His absolute mastery of canvas and comfortable class format made even a beast like calc 2 manageable even while working and still enjoying summer. Take his tests and homework seriously. Every point and question will count in the long run.
Despite how difficult the class is, Belt does a great job at at least trying to make it fun and enjoyable. His famous ukulele session is legendary. He's a funny dude and great lecturer.
Visiting student here--I took Belt Summer 2020 and the guy really has mastered Canvas which made learning completely online so much easier. I wasn't optimistic going into this course because I had failed Calc II twice before but I actually did well in this class and I learned a lot. Trust me--if you're afraid of Calc II but you have Belt, don't be.
Dr. Belt knows what he's talking about but he's great at putting things in the homework that he didn't cover in the lecture. The WebAssign and worksheets every single week get old. The whole class was honestly just a pain and I'm glad it's over.
He's a good guy and he knows what he's talking about. Calculus II is hard, but he teaches in a way that makes it a lot easier to understand. I think I could've gotten a much higher grade if I was able to spend more time working on things for this class. WebAssign and the worksheets can be a bit tedious, though.
Professor Belt was the calculus teacher of my dreams. His performances (although some call them lectures) were filled with everything from wizard hats to cupcakes. His class may have been entirely online and asynchronous but I felt entirely comfortable thanks to his dreamy teaching abilities.
Prof Belt's lectures were always concise and to the point, and he obviously knew what he was talking about and explained it very well. Prof Belt is the definition of a true homie, and he rounded my final grade up from a 86.9 to a 90 (when i asked him to round it to a 87 lol).
Prof belt is amazing, exams are similar to the lectures but the homework's can be tedious he'll put things not covered in the lecture and he might put 1-2 similar homework questions into the exams but most of the exams are similar to the lectures also watch out for T or F questions he puts on the exams... watch the lectures carefully!!
Dr. Belt made a very difficult class so much easier and I loved his class. The WebAssign sheets were very self explanatory and if you need help with something he is more than happy to explain it. If you are taking a calculus 1500 class I would recommend Dr. Belt.
Prof Belt is a chill guy and knows what he's teaching but he makes his lectures easier than the WebAssigns which will be 20x harder than the lectures... so I suggest do all the examples from the WebAssign and lecture because questions from those were similar to exams he also throws in some T or F questions so actually watch the lectures
Professor Belt is truly a wonderful teacher. His class is very well organized and he really does a great job teaching the material in ways that suit every type of learner. Class has an organized structure and due dates are the same every week. Exams are nice but if you are gonna do your WebAssign all in one day, be prepared to work for 6-7 hours
Belt is amazing! Take any math classes you can with him! I still sing his quotient rule song to take derivatives to this day. He literally performed it on his ukulele
I had belt for Calc 2 and his tests were fair but the webassigns were hard... the examples given in his lectures were easier than the ones on webassign Adding on when Belt record his lectures sometimes he makes conclusions without mentioning how he made that conclusion Overall, Belt is a good professor but makes his webassigns ironically hard
Dr. Belt is a great professor, he really seems to care about students and was extremely accommodating for an online class during a pandemic. Calculus is hard, but he taught in a way that made everything easy to understand. The homework is tedious and kind of sucks, but it's really good preparation for the exams.
I took this class over the summer and it was a lot of work. I barely got an A in this class so be prepared to work hard.
Amazing professor, even though this class meets 5 days a week, he makes every lesson worth it.
10/10 would take again
I had Belt for Calc 1 (online) in Fall 2020 and the way he uses Canvas is amazing... under every lecture video module there is practice problems for us to try out which were similar to questions on the exams/quizzes he also gave practice exams but they were not entirely similar to the actual exam.
He is amazing! His class is a little difficult if you havent taken Calc before but its good. Test are a bit difficult. Tons of homework but not strict due date.
Such a caring professor. He makes calculus easy to understand and even fun. He sings for his students and always has a fun anecdote. Would fake the class again just for fun.
Mr. Belt is a great guy. He's great at his lectures, and is relatively approachable if you need any assistance. There are 3 assignments in Calc 1 per week (I per lecture), which isn't ideal for a busy schedule, but the discussion hour allows you to get extra help and clarification to get you the grade you want. Would definitely recommend.
Took AP Calc AB in high school, so this was basically review for me. Belt made class fun and engaging, so I wasn't bored. Exams are way easier than the homework, and are exactly like the practice exams. He doesn't take off points for late work, but there's participation in every lecture through iClicker.
Belt is awesome, he makes it to where you can get whatever grade you really try for. If you want an A you can get it. With extremely minimal effort I ended up with a B+. There is a lot of homework and it can sometimes be extremely difficult but the tests are much, much easier than the homework and he does a thorough review before each test.
belt is a great professor. he explains material in perfect detail that is easy to understand. class is pretty hw heavy but if u keep up with it, no worries. i always struggled with the T&F on exams but they were standard exams. in lecture he uses real life examples as much as possible and that helped me personally. loved belt and you will too.
made math fun to go to
Professor Belt is incredible. He somehow made calculus lectures entertaining. His incredible understanding of techniques is obvious. There is a lot of points outside of just tests. He puts all lectures on zoom so even if you can't be there in class you won't fall behind and you can still receive full class points even while virtual.
As long as you show up the class is very easy. He makes boring calculus somewhat fun and is easily accessible outside class. Very clear on what is expected.
Professor Belt is someone you want to take for Calc I. I had him last semester and he made the subject bearable. Tests were multiple choice (they're not tricky if you studied well) and homework could be submitted right before the end of the semester. You don't want to miss out on a single lecture either. It'll be rough at first but you will be fine
Dustin is the best mathematics professor I have ever had. I took Calculus 1 at another university and barely passed it. Took it at Mizzou and passed with flying colors. He explained concepts in a way that my previous professor was never willing to do. I was extremely engaged and demonstrated a willingness to relearn the material.
Great teacher overall! He's a great introduction to college and makes it less intimidating. Objectives are clearly laid out and practice exams mimic the real exam. He's very friendly and cares about his students and is willing to work with them. One of the best teachers!
The class is challenging but Dustin's teaching makes up for it. Class is weighted 60% exams, 20% homework, 20% video assignments. Exams are multiple choice and you get a cheat sheet for the exam. He curved the grade of our class which helped me out a ton. The exams are very hard though so make sure not to fall behind.
Uses iClicker, and correctness counts for points. This means you can't miss class, but oftentimes he gives the answer before closing submission so don't worry if you're bad at math. He's pretty funny though, and definitely wants you to succeed. Pretty generous late work policy, drops lowest scores. Exams were all online/mostly multiple choice.
He's one of the best math professors at Mizzou. I've had him for both Math 1500 and Math 2300 and both classes were excellent. His lectures are always very clear and he gives great examples. The homework assignments are a little long, but they aren't too terrible.
Made a horrible class good
Has a clear syllabus, class is not difficult but is by no means easy. Belt has some subtle humor in his lectures which can make them a lot better if you can catch it.
Even if you hate math you'll love Belt. He clearly wants his students to succeed. Lectures are great, show his understanding of the subject and methods used in the class, as well as include a few jokes that always land. Prepare for hard exams with no curve, tedious but easy homework, iClicker for a grade during lectures, and a great professor.
I took Calc I in high school and I think I just didn't prepare enough for his exams. Otherwise the class is an easy A. Show up to lecture, do the HW, and you'll have so many points that if you do bad on an exam you can recover from it
He is a great guy and the lecture part of the class wasn't bad, Tests were not too bad, and he gave nice practice tests for them. DO NOT SKIP HW. It dropped my grade more than I thought because I thought they didn't mean much to my grade but I was wrong. If you pay attention in class and don't fall behind u can def get an A.
Fun lectures, nice professor. The multiple choice tests were brutal for me, I spent a week studying practice problems for 2 to 3 hours a night in preparation for the final (not cumulative) and only got a 52% on it. But I'm exceptionally bad at calculus, if you're reading this you'll probably do fine.
He's got a great and very interactive teaching style, I'm just bad at math so I didn't do well. If you want to get iClicker points (13ish%) of your grade, you need to go to class. He's pretty good at pacing with teaching. His exams are great cause it's just whatever you learn from the last final to this one. ie we didn't have a comprehensive final
Dustin's teaching style for the online class was mainly online lectures as you would assume, but the online lectures were all 30+ minutes with very little useful content. He also doesn't show his steps well on examples, and has not written notes to follow so you have to follow the lecture or you have nothing to go off of.
I absolutely loved Dr. Belt. I'm just bad at calculus, which is why I didn't get a good grade. He's very entertaining and makes the lectures not miserable. I would retake Calc 1 just to have him as a prof. He even brought in his guitar to teach us songs about how to remember certain math rules.
Love Prof Belt, I had him for Calc 1 and again online in summer (Calc 2). It was tough but he explains very thoroughly and grades clearly. He also cares and responds quickly! I forgot to turn in the last assignment of the course and emailed him 2 days before the semester ended; he reopened it for me and I got a perfect grade. Amazing professor :)
This man is amazing, not only as a teacher, but as a person. He tries his very best to help you succeed.
Lectures are funny at times, and Mr.Belt finds unique ways to get his point across. I had already taken calculus in high school, so the material was easy for me. However, it probably would have required a lot more time from me if I didn't. The homework assignments oftentimes take a while because the answers start to get long. (12-23 questions).
Lives up to his great reputation on campus. It is obvious that he tries to make lectures engaging and entertaining, and in my opinion he succeeded in doing so.
got thrown into the class halfway through the semester, still the GOAT of professors.
Great Teacher
Goes a little fast in lectures BUT he does record them so we can rewatch later. Overall a good teacher, seems to want us to succeed.
Belt was very passionate about the material during lectures and explained the proofs and applications BEFORE showing examples to the class leading to an all around understanding of the material going into the homeworks. There are 3 homework assignments a week that are about 20 questions usually and doing them all the day of will take 3-5 hours.
He was a very good professor. He lectures with iPad slides, so it goes a bit quickly, but he posts videos so you can go back after. Tests were extremely similar to questions on the homework and his review was very helpful. Overall great guy
Teaches Calculus Amazingly
Professor Belt is a sweetheart. He makes math engaging and teaches well. He is very good at explaining the same concept in at least 2 methods to help make sure that you can understand the material. He is the best!
Lectures are great, there will be iclicker questions that contribute to your overall grade. Professor is caring, even if he does look like. Takes exams and review sessions seriously. Explains everything in and out during review sessions. All you have to do is sit and focus. Lectures are never boring, always with experiments.
Professor Belt is an awesome professor. As long as you are attending class or watching the lecture videos he post, you will pass this class with ease. The material is not too difficult, you just have to stay ahead and be attendant. He provides ample opportunities to get help if you need it.
A pretty cool guy. Honestly I could've paid better attention during the lectures but from when I was, he was a very effective professor. There is a decent amount of homework but it's not too bad. And the practice exams are super helpful.
Amazing professor, very chill person. As long as you pay attention in class and complete the homework, shouldn't be too hard.
as a business major who doesn't enjoy math that often - this guy is genuinely fantastic. coursework is slightly intensive, but he teaches complicated concepts so easily that doing it feels like a cakewalk. one of the best professors i've had the pleasure of being taught by.
Belt is awesome. He does iclickers during lectures, with 3 homeworks, a quiz and a worksheet each week. The homework assignments can be quite difficult, and long. The quizzes and worksheets were pretty easy. Exams are somewhere in between. They are multiple choice so no chance for partial credit. Overall a very good professor.
I took Calc 1 online and overall I would do it again. Tests are proctored do what you will with that info. There are roughly three videos, HW assignments, and tiny quizzes per week. You do need to put a lot of effort in to do well but overall Belt is a great professor and is great at explaining his steps when he does problems!
Professor Belt was one of the best professors! I had zero calc experience walking in, and he made the lectures understandable and very clear. Exams are just like homework problems, and true/false questions on the exams are taken directly from lecture. He offers so much extra help, and truly looks out for every student!
Dr. Belt is probably one of the best math professors I have ever had. I took his MATH1300 course my first year at Mizzou in person and had no complaints. This summer I took MATH1500 online and his format was almost exactly like MATH1300. Tests are multiple choice, lots of homework but doesn't effect grade much if you don't finish.
The lectures were well organized and comprehensive. He covers everything you need to know and in a way that is easy to follow. The exams are fair and practice exams are provided which are similar to the problems you will encounter on the test.
Interesting lectures. explained concepts well. great singer
Dude is a straight pimp. I am excited to go to my boi Dustin's class every day. Would take his class 100/100 times.
Professor Belt is a very good professor. He explains things in a manner that everyone can understand, is quite humerous at times, and gives out fair exam questions. He's also a great singer! I would 100% take a class with him again! 🙂
Professor Belt is an amazing professor, who is very good explaining concepts and keeping his class interesting. Overall one of my favorite professors so far.
Very funny and charismatic professor. He's very knowledgeable and helpful when you have questions.
Made Calc 1 very bearable, amazing lectures that keep you invested and help you actually learn the material. Discussions are hit or miss and very much depend on the TA but I had good experiences there. Overall amazing teacher.
Prof. Belt is perhaps the best professor in the entire math department at MU. He gives engaging lectures for calculus (even singing for the class while playing ukulele one time). Homework is about what you'd expect from a math class, tests have good review material beforehand, the difficulty of the class is based on how fast you catch on to calc.
Dr. Belt's lectures are very good. He is great at explaining the material and provides tons of resources for studying for the exams. Attendance is important, there is an iClicker every lecture and an iClicker or Quiz every discussion and they all add up pretty quick if you perform poorly on them.
Belt is a good guy, but goes very very fast during the lectures. It can be hard to keep up when taking notes. Curves the grades a lot though which is nice. When studying make sure you take ALL the practice exams, they are very similar to the actual exam. The exams are difficult because you have limited time to do big calculations. No calculator.
I took this course online and it went pretty smoothly. Grades were made up mostly of exams, with homework assignments, quizzes, and video assignments as a good grade booster. Exams covered many different concepts, but pretty basic questions for each topic. Considering how confusing calculus is, this class was relatively easy given the curriculum.
This dude is the goat
Dr. Belt is one of my favorite professors! I took calc in high school but didn't grasp the concepts very well, but Belt made it super easy to understand. He's engaging and makes the lecture fun sometimes. 3 homeworks a week (one per lecture). That wasn't bad for me but it could be different for others. Attendance is taken via iClicker quizzes.
I taught Calculus One very well, and it made math fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend Belt; his tests are all multiple-choice, and the practice exams are very similar to the actual exams.
Dr. Belt's teaching style is amazing. He integrates iClicker into the classes to make sure students understand the material. He made me understand things my high school calculus teacher could not. I recommend taking Dr. Belt's classes if given the choice.
Belt is a great professor for Calc one. His lectures are pretty interesting and he sometimes will do something interesting like sing a song or play an instrument. Taking notes during his lectures are not difficult. There are lots of drop assignments and the tests were almost all curved.
His lectures are amazing and he is just genuinely a nice guy. He explains things in a very concise way. His homework's are also very simple in the aspect of it's exactly what we did in class. His exams are also exactly what was gone over in class. Overall a g.
Literally one of the best teachers I've ever had. Engaging, Witty, and eager to help if you show up to his office hours (assuming you're the only one there, which isn't impossible depending on which one you go to.) Made Calc 1 tolerable and then some. Absolute legend!
Calculus was very confusing to me, but Professor Belt was very good at explaining during lectures. He gave us multiple practice exams we could practice before our actual exam. Very helpful. He sang during multiple lectures; it was awesome.
Dr. Belt is very precise with teaching what's important, he makes everything very fun to learn and constantly does engaging hilarious things that keeps the momentum going in class. All the homework is a copy of what we did in class and while attendance is graded through iClickr he does it every day so you won't be affected too much.
He's the goat
He is very knowledgeable and good at explaining things. He tries to make lectures as entertaining as math can be. Weekly quizzes, but you can use your notes and work with others. Weekly homework that is a lot harder than lectures, but makes the exams easier. Exams are not terrible, but you definitely need to study. Overall a really good professor.
Amazing professor. You can tell he enjoys what he teaches. Lectures are clear and easy to follow. Discussions have quizzes you can use notes and worksheets you can work with others. Need to study for the exams they can be difficult if not prepared.
Was very communicative and understanding to any situation that would arise during the semester. Class lectures were encouraged since they were for a small grade however, I guess they weren't necessarily mandatory. He's the goat.
The lectures were really easy to follow but make sure to study for each exam, it was my exam average that pulled my grade down, the homework's and daily work were easy enough
Amazing professor who really cares about his students. Lectures are easy to understand, and the course/homework assignments are extremely well organized.
I took this class without taking math for a year, and I was prepared. He is really funny, but moves at a very fast pace, to where my friend and I had a hard time writing down the equations. It would help if your TA would explained things thoroughly; however, I was unlucky on that end too. The tests are a massive chunk of your grade, so do well!!!!!
Probably the best math teacher I have ever had. Be sure to put in the work; this class will be hard if you don't stay focused. He makes his lectures very engaging, and I find myself laughing from time to time. His introduction to the product and quotient rule was hilarious. I won't spoil it for those getting ready to take the class.
Go to the TA discussions, that's where you learn everything and where a lot of your grade comes from, don't make the same mistake as me, but Belt is a great professor
Absolutely amazing professor. The course is incredibly well organized and carefully laid out. The lectures are incredibly structured, and he does a great job at articulating the information. Like others have stated previously, he's got the course down to a science.
Dr. Belt is a wonderful teacher. If you go to class and pay attention in lectures, you will do good in the class. He is very supportive if you ask for help. There is homework over all lectures and a worksheet and quiz each week, these will help cushion your grade for tests, and he sets you up well for tests at review sessions.
I am writing this review after taking Calc 2 and Calc 3. Professor Belt used so much visualizations in his lectures and it took me 2 semesters to realize how good I had it. Professor Belt is my best professor thus far
