If you can't pass this class something is wrong with YOU now the teacher.U may feel u know everything and the class is too easy but you learn a lot from his lectures. he's a lil too clear so you can't fail! if he taught every subject I'd take him. The class was kept interesting with clear, concise lectures and the encouragement of group discussions. I didn't get a lot of writing experience, but he does give excellent feedback on papers, which makes it easy to get an A.

Dr Hanvey is clear on what he wants and very helpful, he is more then willing to help his students when they want it...all good!!! I highly recommend him, if you are an ESL student.

This professor was fantastic, always there for conference times, answered all questions, he followed his course outline so you were never surprised. I am hoping to take him for english 1A too. If you have to take english 100 take Dr. Hanvey he will get you ready for the next level. I was really scared about english classes but I'm ready for 1A.

Those people that make bad comments bout Professor Hanvey are judgmental. I think he teaches very well and always prepares for his lectures. I take his 1a and 1b classes, and I feel that he is very helpful, and he gives you lots of chances to see him during the office hours for help. His class is not easy but fair. Everytime When I using the writing skills which I learned from Dr. Hanvey, I feel so great. He is a knowlegeable English Professor and you really learn a lot from him. He's a great teacher that brings new ways of teaching to the calss. Though his grading on essays are tough, he makes you do fairly easy journals to make up for points. There may be lots of work, but he makes the class fun with activities and discussions.

TOOK HIM FOR SUMMER SESSION ENG 1B HARD GRADER, ONE PRESENTATION, CLASS DISCUSSIONS AND DAILY JOURNALS. TO GET AN A IN HIS CLASS YOU MUST BE PERFECT VERY PICKY. I WAS ABLE TO SURVIVE. HE'S A GOOD TEACHER BUT HE NEEDS TO RELAX ON GRADING. TAKE HIM FOR A 16 WEEK SEMESTER.

Very good professor. We get to do fun activities, including visiting a mall and watch Seinfeld Episode "Soup Nazi." Essay topics can be strange, but can be useful. Hard grader on first essay, and you get a chance to improve on your essays.

He's not an easy grader and is pretty specific with what he wants in your writing. However, his class is fun and he touches on a variety of topics outside of classical literature.. so it's pretty interesting. his essay topics are kinda dumb though.... but he's nice =)

Dr. H is a great teacher. Very easy to pass his class, just have a basic understanding of the English Language. Tells you exactly what he expects, test are very easy w/extra credit always possible. Just read what he gives you. It's an easy A. Though the journals can become tedious, especally at the end of 16 weeks.

Dr. Hanvey explains things carefully in detail-though sometimes a bit fast-and conducts regular class discussions for each reading he covers. He comments thoroughly for each essay I turned in and encourages his students to come to his office hours for any questions. Very down to earth. I believe this class is the reason I begin to like English.

He's a very clever, helpful, and entertaining teacher. I used to hate English, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class. I highly recommend taking him!!!

super cool dude. he grades hard on the first essay but easier on the others. read the assigned essays and pay attention to the class discussions b/c they help on the journals. i highly recommend him. his class was really fun and never a boring moment. oh and he loves satire essays if you can do them correctly(hint hint).

A really sweet and helpful professor. His British Lit class is really fun, and always asks the class interesting discussion questions. As an English major, all the readings are ones you NEED to know. The only thing I noticed is that he seems a little nervous about taking control over the class. Overall, though, it's been a great class.

I like english to begin with, but he was very helpful & just an all around great teacher! I learned alot especially w/the book chosen for our class to read. If you come to class on time, do all the work, and pay attention you can get an A, & if you need help just ask. He's approachable and nice!

I'm an English major transferring to Cal, and Dr. Hanvey is one of the BEST english professors I've had at pcc! He's genuinely enthusiastic and passionate about his subject, and as long as you take good notes, show up to class, and work hard on your essays and journals you'll be fine. p.s. He also gets points for being into music and traveling!

this ain't an easy class, but you'll enjoy it very much. read the assigned book essays cuz you'll be writing 17 journals throughout the sem, but the topics were really interesting (with a hint of social psych). do work hard on your 5 essays, and prepare for 5 quizzes. not a very heavy class, and teacher's not hard grader. highly recommended!

I loved this class. It was a 7am class and i still woke up excited to go to class because it wasn't boring at all! Dr. Hanvey is a great teacher who is passionate about what he does and you can learn a lot from him.Yes, you have to do the work, but it is truly rewarding. Take his class! It is a great experience!

Out of Eng. classes at PCC, his 46B class prepared me the most. There's a ton of reading and writing in his class, but now that I'm at Berkeley, the workload and level of close reading in his class has given me a step up on other transfer students. His passion for the work is contagious and if you're an ENG major at PCC, his class is a must.

Dr. Hanvey totally rocks. He will let you know what you need to improve on in your essays and journals. if you need a scheduled time for a conference, do not hesitate to ask. Highly recommended for english and non english majors alike. He is the best for classes.

Dr. Hanvey is crystal-clear when it comes to what he expects, therefore he gives you an essay format for every essay he assigns (I found this to be the most helpful aspect of his class). Does seem to grade harder on the first essay compared to others. Cordial and approachable, Dr. Hanvey's class will undoubtedly improve your writing ability.

Prof Hanvey is a great teacher. He really lays out his expectations for you. He is not uber-easy but not difficult. Read, take notes, improve your writing, you can get an A if you put in the appropriate effort. Easy going and understanding. Could be more critical of individuals writing and demand more improvements from students. Id take him again.

HE is really helpful and clear! Essays are what really define your overall grade. Journals, quizzes, projects don't really matter much. Just try to get As on essays and you'll get A. A lot of busy work and grade is based on pure writing skills.

this professor is not easy. but fair grader. i have learned so much from him. in order to get an A u have to write as a college student. and have ALOT of people proofreadin it. trust me. 5 essays total. 2 out of 5 in-class essays. the topic of this class is mainly about globalization just letting u know cuz i did not know when i took this class

Dr. Hanvey is such a great professor! He is fair and very clear in what he wants from his students. Grading is heavily based on essays (Five total, two in-class, one research paper), and the rest is based on journals and class participation. I really recommend people take his class because they will learn so much from him.

Professory Hanvey is quite a phenomenal professor, even though getting an A in his class was not so easy. It takes work and dedication to achieve in his class, and I perceive Professor Hanvey can easily tell who put in the work and who didn't. So to get an A, just show it. Prof. Hanvey knows English like the back of his hand. He's very energetic about his subject & truly cares about his students. Your grade is guaranteed to reflect the effort you put in, but he's a fair grader & tries to help all students, especially on essays. Medium hw load. Quiz/Tests are based books, so READ the books! Grading is fair, pay attention to comments about your writing, study w/ other students, & take notes. He's very logical but quirky. Made me a better writer. He also gives scholarships for English majors, although I chose Math/Computer Science instead. Recommend his class for Eng. majors.

He is one of the best teachers I have ever had and have learned a lot. His class is demanding however his teaching style is great! He uses a lot of class discussions and participation and minimizes on lectures.

Dr. Hanvey is an amazing professor. It is only my 2nd year of college but I can definitively state that he is the most involved professor I've had thus far. With most professors sadly it feels as if they are lackadaisical in the running of their classroom and grading. Dr. Hanvey goes out of the way to clearly and concisely assist every student.

I took his Utopic/Dystopic Literature class and, despite picking it only to fill up my schedule, I really enjoyed it. Although he keeps weird hours, I enjoyed it regardless and had my opinion changed on the dystopic genre.

Hanvey's class is difficult, but it is a great introduction to the 4 year style. His work is challenging and his class discussions are in depth. In spite of the difficulty, his class is very informative and thought provoking. To put it one way, if you're ready for college level work, his class is a must for Eng. majors.

One of best profs I've had. Took classes as a part of the Honors Transfer Program (highly recommend it-they have great profs) Discussions make class interesting and he really preps students for the essays. Gives clear directions and pointers. Know your weaknesses as a writer tho,& if essays arent your strong pt then be sure to get help in advance

My writing skills are decent and I was able to get a B in his class but that's because I didn't spend a lot of time on my essays and I always did them last minute. He's a fair grader, lectures are interesting and engaging. He likes to have class discussions. Go to his office hours, he'll explain your weak points. All in all, he's a good teacher

Dustin is one of the best facilitators of the classroom environment I've ever experienced, making sure the class is fast paced and engaging. He asks stimulating questions which consistently the students want to answer, and there's always a million hands up in class. Definitely take him!

I recommend him to everyone. Teaching is very structured and clear. Prepares you VERY WELL for his essays, gives you an outline for EVERY essay but isn't as picky about writing as other profs(except for the basic things like grammar, flow of essay etc.) If you aren't good writer,write your paper weeks before it's due and go to his office hours!

Dr. Hanvey is a wonderful teacher. He is a kind man and cares a lot about his students. He rarely goes off tangent, and always tries to help you when you participate. He may seem slightly goofy, but he is very intelligent and will guide you to an A if you do your work and read your texts.

Prof. Hanvey is one of the best professors I have had yet at PCC. He gets straight to the point and tells you exactly what you need to do to well on the essays. There are 3 essays (6-8 pages each), journal assigns. from reading both in class and at home, and group presentations. Take this class if you really want to improve your writing skills.

He's amazing. I took his honors class and there were like 20 people in the class. I have to admit, I did not read a single book in his class that he assigned and I managed to pass the class with a B. Group projects are really fun and easy, helps boost your grade. TAKE HIM.

There aren't that many good professors here, but this guy is amazing. He pushes you to become better. He's pretty strict but he's not a bully. I loved his class and especially enjoyed the group work he assigned.

Most enriching english class I have ever taken. Professor Hanvey will make you work for your grade but never in an overwhelming way, or in an intimidating way. So kind and genuinely cares for his students. Never had any homework, and class is definitely mandatory. The discussions and activities in his class were amazing! I would take him again!

He's a very intuitive professor, probably the best I've had in my stay at PCC. Not only is he caring, he genuinely wants you to pass, offering you a chance to learn your mistakes. If I had to pick a favorite professor, it would have to be Dr. Hanvey! He makes english and class so enlightening and fun, sometimes you will not even feel as if it is work. This man is the man. Hanvey's got a heart for his students and he's very organized! As such, he expects that your essays are also organized and he outlines what he wants from you. He creates a sense of community in the classroom so if you struggle you'll talk to him and your classmates. I'm taking him for 1B, and ohh, he made a trip to DC happen.

Absolutely the best teacher at PCC! His lectures are in power point so you can always go back and see it on Canvas. You have to be responsible for buying & reading the books. Always there to lend a helping hand! Essays are okay if you know your stuff (lets you have 1 pg of notes!) Plans a trip to DC in Spring! :D

I was struggling with one of my assignments and he was really helpful; he took the time to give me one-on-one advice and was really down to earth. He does have three essays and you do have to do the readings, but he is worth it.

Took english 1a honors. A lot of writing and group projects/presentations. When I came into the class, I was not a very good writer so I struggled a lot, but I was able to talk to him and he was very understanding and cares a lot about the subject and his students. A lot of work to pass with a C. Dont recommend unless you like reading/writing

His wonderful feedback has made me a confident writer. & when times got tough for me, he was so understanding... WISH I could take him again. 10/10

He's very passionate, and he encourages his students to share their opinions, even if you're shy/ awkward, he makes the atmosphere less awkward. Go to office hours if you're stuck on an essay or need him to revise it. However, make sure to take notes on particular quotes and the historical background since that's part of the final. Not an easy A.

Dr. Hanvey's class is never boring, and he posts his powerpoints to canvas in advance, so you can study what he's going to be teaching. He is a tough grader, go to his office hours and he will give you specific suggestions that are really helpful. He'll even fix the first 2 pages of your essay for you. The text book is kind of expensive.

Professor Hanvey is the best teacher in the English department. The texts he picks for the class are so interesting. He is very organized throughout the course and in his assignments. He can be tough in his grading but all his corrections are helpful in improving your writing.

The texts he chooses are very interesting. Participate in his class and Canvas discussions! He gives points for those. His grading criteria is very straightforward and he's very lenient on assignments if you discuss it with him. 3 essays, 1 final group project, quizzes and journals are graded. Quizzes are mostly made by the class!

I took Prof. Hanvey's 1C class that dealt with comics & graphic novels. Definitely a fun choice! There is a lot of writing, especially with the journal you keep for class, but it's very helpful. As long as you participate & show up, there's no reason not to get an A.

Love this guy!!!!! His class was comic based. He's extremely caring and only wants you to try your best. He makes a classroom setting comfortable. Requires 5 books. Discussions every week. 3 papers. Quizzes and final are based on the books so actually read them. Final project is a comic strip. Extra credit opportunity: trip to Warner Bros Studios.

It makes me feel uneasy to acknowledge that the semester is concluding, especially when I had an instructor like Professor Hanvey. He can easily identify whether you're putting in effort, and will continue to push you to your potential. I strongly recommend taking English with him.

After finishing the course I cannot believe the impact the class and Professor Hanvey had on me. There were some moments where we all got emotional and it was touching. The first day of class I knew how passionate Hanvey was with his work. He is very helpful in prepping you for the essays and provides good feedback.

Took him for fall and he was really nice. Very passionate about his job and that's what makes the class great. He doesn't force anyone to turn on camera which is nice for people like me who have anxiety. If you attend the zoom meetings, you usually complete most of the homework due that week besides essays.

He lays out exactly what's happening in class, which was helpful on Zoom. He'll let you revise your essays for a higher grade so long as you submit it on time. DrH was honestly the best professor I've ever had. My entire class connected with him because he's super understanding and truly cares for his students. Professor Hanvey gave excellent feedback on your essay. In addition, you will get your chance to revise for higher grades, and you can set up zoom to discuss the potential paper. He's really kind and sweet. He was that kind of Prof who is always there for you when you need help. There's a lot of discussions in the class (in-person), and he usually brought up interesting points for us to talk about. The best thing about him is that he respects every student and listens to our very own voice.

Probably one of the best English teachers/professors I have ever had. He is very caring for his students and understands that his class is not the only class that students have. He gives a good amount of extra credit and even lets you resubmit essays to be revised for a higher grade. Definitely take him again next Spring for his ENGL001C class :)

Hanvey is an absolute gem. He truly cares about his students and highly encourages socialization and friendship between students. His philosophy and approach to teaching is so unique in a great way that it really sets him apart from other profs. He is such an inspiration and I truly cannot recommend him enough.

Dr. Hanvey is one of the best professors I have encountered during my time here. Not only is he passionate about what he teaches, but he is also very understanding with his students. He creates a safe environment to ask questions and participate, so that even shy students--like myself--are comfortable interacting with their peers.

The best professor I ever had. He understood and cared about the personal struggles I was going through and did not hold them against me at all. In fact, he told me to put myself first. Incredibly fun class, and very fun readings. You can tell he is passionate about his work, and his passion is infectious.

Good professor. I like over achieving, so the papers were no problem for me. Four papers for his 1A class, each increasing in length. Papers are double spaced and works cited needed, so length is not a problem. Starting with 5 then 10ish. Very accomodating. He will accept more pages than needed, I wrote 13 pages on a 5. Socialize as freshmen, LOL

He's nominated for the best teacher award, that implies how good he is. He's very caring and understanding. He's like a father to our English class. We all have so much fun taking his class. There's a lot of paper that needs to be done, but he always extend the deadline if we requested. Take him and you won't regret.

Hanvey is by far THE best teacher I've ever had in my academic career. He cares for students so much and has such a strong passion for teaching. He was nominated for Teacher of the Year too, 1000% deserved. The structure of the class itself is amazing; he is super lenient with deadlines but still rewards being on time with extra credit. Love him!

Professor Hanvey was the sweetest and most understanding professor there is out there. I was experiencing a lot in my life and there were many days I couldn't mentally bring myself to complete assignments. His communicative efforts in working with me to complete these assignments were truly amazing.

I took Professor Hanvey for 1AH; he's one of the best professors you'll come across, super caring and understanding. He has a very lenient deadline policy with getting extra credit for turning in things on time. You'll get a big extra credit opportunity as well. I would say the readings for the class are reasonable, as well as the number of essays.

His class is fairly easy if you do everything on time and put an effort into your writing. There is a decent amount of reading, but it isn't too overwhelming. He always gives input on writing, and also allows essay revisions. There are weekly journals, which can take some time, but are not too hard to complete. He's very kind and understanding!

Dr. Hanvey's class is chill. He graded essays in extreme detail and recommend how to fix them. And also he will let you revise your essay after he graded it. He is also required to read the book; that book is very inspiring and easy to understand. MUST TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE AND GET GOOD GRADES !!!!!!!

The most caring professor ever! Understanding, kind, empathetic. A lot of reading, so be sure to keep up. Class discussions are important, so participate/take notes and journal.Four papers for the semester, weekly homework assignments, (the latter which he always extends deadlines for). Provides helpful feedback and thoughts on essays/homework.

One of the best professors at PCC. He gives amazing lectures! He truly does care for all of his students and is flexible as long as you reach out. Super clear grading criteria and offers chance to edit essays for resubmission. He is so wholesome

Professor Hanvey taught 1C through the use of comics and I found that to be an amazing way to teach critical thinking instead of using traditional English texts. If you like comic books, their is no reason to not take this class! Prof Hanvey is also a very caring person and has made it clear that he wants nothing more than to help out his students.

Dr. Hanvey is one of the BEST professors! He is super caring & wants to see his students do well. There are weekly online journals that must be completed and a couple of long essays too. However, for the long class essays, he always gives his students time to revise them for a higher grade and there are various opportunities for extra credit too.

Professor Hanvey is by far the greatest professor you'll ever encounter during your time at PCC. He encourages and brings the best out of all of his students. Hanvey truly cares about everyone in his class and has honestly motivated and inspired me so much during my time here. If you get the chance, please take him.

Great professor, super approachable & cares a lot about his students. Provides plenty of extra credit opportunities. In class time is based a lot around group discussions. Only con imo is that he does timed essays & there's a limit as to how many essays you can revise. Overall I'd highly recommend this class and would definitely take it again.

Take his class! He is the sweetest most caring professor. His class is such a great experience and his topics keep you engaged and interested. Lot of group discussion (which I liked). He is super approachable and understanding. His class goes at the perfect pace and he gives you all the information you need for essays beforehand!

I have never had a professor like Dr Hanvey before. He is the kindest, most understanding teacher you will ever meet. His grading policy is extremely forgiving, and there's more than enough time to do assignments. I'm skipping Honors 1B cause I want to take his class in the Spring again. If you have the chance, it would be a mistake not to take him

I had 6 classes but this was the easiest. Almost all of his assignments are completion credit + you get +1 EC if you turn in his weekly journals early. The only thing that isn't comp. credit are his 4 essays but follow his rubric and you'll get at least a B on them. He gives 2 revisions on any essays which can be used to rewrite for a better grade.

Professor Hanvey is a respected professor and his class was amazing to be apart of. His class can be kind of stressful at times because he does assign a lot of work, but you also have a lot of time to complete your assignments. He creates a community within the class, allowing us to be heard and respected by our peers.

Getting straight to the point-- I love Professor Hanvey. If you work hard, you will be rewarded. This man RECOGNIZES you for your voice, and he actually encouraged students to write in their normal voice! He provides valuable feedback for every essay and journal. He wants you to succeed-- I highly recommend taking his class!

SOOO SWEET OMG. Genuinely one of the kindest profs you will ever have. Participate and do the journals. He is accomodating, gives great feedback, homework is light medium and very manageable. Essays worth a lot but you can revise 2/4 of them, and not a tough grader. Does repeat himself a lot but is still the sweetest!

If you have the opportunity to take Professor Hanvey, hands down, take it. He truly cares about your success, very understanding. He is fun and really connects you to the readings and materials. Assignments were not overwhelming, and if you need help, just ask for it; he's very accessible.

He works on a reward system, so turn things in on time and get extra credit. There are four main in-class essays that you're able to write days in advance with the prompt. Enough weekly assignments to improve writing skills, but not too much to the point it becomes overwhelming. Group discussions valuable for understanding themes of assignments.
