I was kind of surprised that he wasn't on here, but am glad to give the first review. I took Geometry with him and it was overall a fairly easy class. His grading system is generous (replaces one test with the final--DO YOUR HOMEWORK!) and he will always go over something as many times as you need (even if you have to stay late). Good professor.
GREAT TEACHER! I've never been good at Math, but he certainly changed that. He's extrememly helpful and is very straight to the point with explainations. Grades fairly. Helpful when it comes to preparing for test. You'll enjoy him for Geometry!!
He is warmhearted. very healpful. crystal clear about grade. he'll turn the math into something really light and easy. his class is easy but it doesn't mean that you can be lazy, thought.
Mr. Silva is really good at explaining the details. As long as you do your homework you can pass the class. He goes over some examples on what to expect to be on the test before hand. He is funny and allows plenty of time for questions before each class. He is a fair and fun techer...MUST TAKE HIM!!!
Mr. Silva is a really nice teacher. He gives a lot of homework but it ends up helping out your grade if you don't do so well on tests. He's also insanely smart.
Study his lecture notes, study guides, & complete the assignments. He's extremely helpful. He has a good sense of humor. Don't get discouraged just because he's from the other campus. It's worth the drive.
Here's why you should take Mr. Silva's class: You will receive credit for turning in homework (which boosts your overall grade and helps balance out bad test scores), he gives partial credit for wrong answers on tests, and he is a great teacher who will help you learn the material if you are having trouble.
Not a good class to take if you require taking slower steps in math. I felt overloaded and annoyed when having to go over the next chapter before a test would be assigned. Way too much work.
HE WILL EXPLAIN EVERYTHING IN FULL DETAIL. MATH WAS AND STILL IS MY WEAKEST SUBJECT BUT HE MADE IT INCREDIBLY EASIER TO UNDERSTAND. IF YOU CAN'T GRASP THE MATERIAL FROM HIS LECTURE CHANCES ARE YOU WON'T GO VERY FAR IF YOU'LL TAKE IT UNDER A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. DO ALL THE WORK AND YOU'LL PASS. IF YOU DON'T. THEN YOU DIDN'T DO YOUR PART.
His class is super easy if you are someone that likes math. He lectures for a very long time but you are given time in class to do the homework. If you understand Math like I do you will just skip his lecture and learn on your own in the book. He gives reviews for test and they are the same. Do the homework it helps a lot.
WILL TAKE HIM AGAIN IF I NEED ANOTHER MATH CLASS. HE WAS VERY PATIENT & WELL-ORGANIZED. YOU HAVE TO TAKE HIM... IT'S THAT SIMPLE. MATH ISN'T BUT HE'LL MAKE IT EASY.
Mr. Silva was very nice and helpful. He seems shy at first, but if you get him to talk its a fun class. He takes his time lecturing and will stop to help anyone who doesn't get it. He hold study sessions before each test which are also very helpful. I suggest you do your homework and show up, and you will do fine.
Good teacher. Ask questions, he will answer. This class is not for you if it's been a while since taking a math class.
Prof. Silva is an awesome teacher. He will answer homework question. Never makes you feel any question is dumb. Allows time for homework to be worked on in class. Great Teacher!!!
Mr. Silva is very generous of his time. He gives review sessions apart from the scheduled class before an exam. He will patiently answer all questions. You'll pass by answering all the homework & study guide. Blame yourself if you fail because he does his job well. College is not spoon feeding.
Math 070 was terrible, but Prof Silva made it (finally) passable!! Very helpful and a great teacher. I highly recommend him. He dedicates his time to his students. One of the greatest.
He is an okay professor. He has about 5 exams and the final. There are NO make-ups and NO extra credit. However, he does offer lots of help before class and before exams.
He is probably one of the best math teachers that COC has. We hardly use the textbook, just for homework. Homework is only collected the day of tests, so he gives you time & answers your questions very specifically. He is willing to spend extra time with you, he wants you to pass! Tests are easy if you pay attention to his printed notes. He's GREAT
Professor Silva is simply the best!! He works with the entire class and explains everything so well. If you don't understand something, he will stop and focus on where you got lost or what you don't understand. I highly recommend him, especially if you are taking PAL math classes.
Silva is AMAZING!Very organized, does 3 starter math problems beginning class, then ansr HW questions, hands out notes, teaches STEP BY STEP so one knows where they went wrong,VERY fair grading exams, provides current grade on homework, classwork & last exam when exams are passd back, ansrs questions aftr class, speaks perfect English(hard to findnowaday)
GREAT teacher. Taking 070 for the 2nd time. Last teacher made 070 impossible and Silva not only makes it passable but easy! Very dedicated to his students, not just the material, takes his time and is very patient. Moderate amount of hw, tests are easy if you listen and take notes. Simply the best math teacher! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... and I hate math
Mr. Silva is a great great teacher!! he is really helpful! answers questions for any problem you have! i took the pal program classes which is 058 & 060 together in one semester & it was really easy cuz of his help!! the test aren't bad at all! he gives a fair amount of hw but its easy tho!! RECOMMEND RECOMMEND RECOMMEND! i wanna take him again!!
Very organized, goes over ANY question in HW and will wait patiently until someone asks. Gives FULL notes to help and does problems on the notes STEP BY STEP so its crystal clear.Out of 5math professors ive had,no one compares.gives fun worksheets to practice and tests are just like notes he gives.EXCELLENT!
He is honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. I have always been horrible in math until taking his class. He actually makes you like math if you don't already. I wish he was teaching the math classes i still need. I would definitely take him again if I could!I took his PAL Math 58/60 although fast paced i still passed with an A & B.
He is honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. I have always been horrible in math until taking his class. He actually makes you like math if you don't already. I wish he was teaching the math classes i still need. I would definitely take him again if I could! He helps you in any way he can.
He is honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. I have always been horrible in math until taking his class. He actually makes you like math if you don't already. I wish he was teaching the math classes i still need. I would definitely take him again if I could! He is always willing to help in any way he can to make you understand the material.
Mr. Silva will go over a problem until you understand it. He bends to your learning style. I highly recommend him as a professor. He doesn't make you feel dumb and welcomes questions.
GREAT TEACHER! I HATE math with a passion, I had to re-take the 070 class, got a D the first time I took this class with another teacher. He made the material easy to understand and does NOT make you feel dumb when asking a question. HIGHLY recommend this class! Tests are straight forward and hw are easy pts. THE best math teacher I have ever had!!
One of the best math teachers I've had. He is very organized and willing to help and go over material until you understand. He welcomes questions and makes you feel comfortable asking. Although I put easy, you do have to put in your end of the work to pass, he won't give it to you. He just makes the material easy to understand. Take him!
Real nice guy. I really hate math and it's one of my weakest subjects, but Silva makes it look so easy. Lets us use note card for final, study guides he goes over with you, and note packets for every chapter. Never had a math teacher like him before. Am looking forward to taking him again.
Took Mr. Silva for the PAL 75/140 class and he's a super nice guy. Really wants you to learn the material and make sure you understand it. He didn't give piles of homework like I was expecting. Take him if you can
Took Him for a PAL class math 75/140. He is an amazing teacher very nice, and helpful. i used to be a real slacker is school so i was trying to get back in the rythym through this class. i got a D in 75 and he still continued me to 140(changed my grade to a c) cause he saw i was trying hard and because i participated. I recommened him for anyone
Before taking the course,I had a strong dislike for Math. Professor Silva made de class interesting, he took the time to make sure each student fully understood the material. As I took the class I looked forward to attending and expanding my knowledge of Math.He is the best professor ever. I highly recommend his class and him as a professor.
Hands down the BEST math teacher on campus! He made time before and after class to tutor students, and always made sure the class understood the material before moving on to new new concepts. The classwork/homework was designed to reinforce the concepts, not just "busy" work. I would HIGHLY recommend Professor Silva!
Great professor. Very well organized and would recommend him to anyone.
Prof. Silva is truly a gem. I have never had a professor that cares so much abut the topic they/re teaching and that TRULY wants his students to succeed. He will go over material over and over again until everyone understands. But don't expect an easy A. I think many of the people in my class saw the comments on this site and expected an easy A
One of the best math professors at COC. This is one man that truly loves math and wants his students to understand. He is always open during office hours and that time helps for exam. His test aren't easy but if you pay attention and study then you will be fine. I wish he was teaching 140 but I recommend him!!!
AWESOME TEACHER. As an adult returning to school, I had to take Statistics after not having a math class in 20 years. He goes step by step and doesn't leave anyone behind. HIGHLY RECOMMEND :)
Best teacher I've ever had! One of the fewest teachers ive seen and had that actually cares about his students success, he is very helpful and never makes you feel pressured or dumb. Take his class!! Request for him he is awesome and such a great teacher! If you go to class, pay attention and attempt the work you'll do great! He will make sure of it. He honestly is amazing! So happy he's at COC
Its his 1st semester as a calc teacher. He explained theorems as if we should've already mastered them. He was great in stats. horrible in calc. Test questions were extremely difficult, hard to comprehend, and even when asked why we never went over such questions in class, he would respond, "just apply what you've learned in class to the questions.
You must attend ALL CLASSES, ask questions and partner up with a fellow student to go over the OLI assigned homework. (You'll thank me!). He explains all the material and will push the exam if he feels like the class isn't ready. Trust me I hate math with a passion but I recommend him to everyone who needs to take 075/140 Math! -E
An all around PHENOMENAL teacher. I was very nervous about my first calculus class but he made it so simple, clear, and understandable. He would go over problems in class, in his office hours, even over e-mail. Homework was kinda a lot but made tests doable. Overall a top notch math professor at a school with not many of them.
Best math teacher in the school. If you are looking for someone who really knows the material and really cares about his students this is your guy. Professor Silva makes math understandable and almost fun to those who dread it. He is a fantastic professor and I would highly recommend him to everyone.
Silva is an absolutely wonderful professor, especially for a subject as advanced as Calculus. Everything I have to say has already been said- lots of homework, kinda hard tests, but if Rate My Professors was looking for a model for a 5 helpfulness rating, this would be their guy. He's tough, but that's natural for the subject. I highly recommend.
Honestly, Ive never been part of a class that is so interactive and so fun. This class is interactive when it needs to be, but he also allows us to enjoy ourselves. Ive made great friends in this class and he is always there for his students. If he taught every course i needed to take, i would never pick someone over him. Take his class.
good teacher good guy a little silly at times but he means well. and he brings cookies occasionally its awesome.
Professor Silva is by far the best math professor I have ever taken at COC. He cares about his students and want to see his students pass. He is passionate about what he does and is well respected amongst students. He likes to make a lot of math jokes and likes to have fun as well. He is a great guy and an amazing professor. I highly recommend him.
I took Math075 and Math140 PAL with Silva and he is an amazing professor! He makes sure each student fully understands the topics covered and he is very caring. Has a great sense of humor and has a very interactive way of teaching. Highly recommend!
He is a nice understanding person that is willing to help you thoroughly understand the subject. He tries to make the class as interactive and interesting for the students as he can. However he does make you take online math quizes and read a lot online and grades your online participation.
Dustin Silva is one of the best professors. He makes Statistics fun. His class was never boring. He is very helpful, passionate in his teaching, and has a great sense of humor. Take his PAL Math075 and Math 140. Highly Recommended
Great teacher I took him for a PAL class and he really tries to get students to learn and participate. He'd also bring us food which was a plus. Gives out a lot of worksheets to do during class and at home so be aware of that but if youre willing to work hard you should be fine, some people did struggle more than others but hes always there to help
He is my favorite Math teacher I have ever had. I am not good at math and do not like it either but he made class enjoyable. You can see how much he cares about his students. He wants you to succeed and will work with you no matter how little or how much help you need. Over all great teacher.
Such a great math professor. Very willing to help his students and makes the subject fun and easy to learn. Even if math isn't your strong suit, he'll help you understand each concept. Very kind and would definitely take him again!
He is the best math professor I've ever had. Lots of homework, but it is easy because he goes over all of the concepts very thoroughly in class. Tests aren't too hard, and he makes it very possible to get at least a B in the class. He is very caring and I can't recommend him enough
Professor Silva is a great, math being my weak subject, he is very clear. He prepares you for everything. He cares about your success and will always help you NO MATTER WHAT. He is genuinely a nice, silly little awkard guy who makes bad jokes. But, his teaching is on point!! Definitely reccomend
He explains things well. Though, I feel that he ran his class quite like a high school class. He assigns tons of homework and demands a lot of time from his students. Overall, a pretty good experience in his class.
Professor Silva is a great professor! His class is somewhat difficult but do-able. Sometimes things are a little unclear in the class but overall great professor and he really cares about helping his students understand statistics. Overall would recommend.
Professor Silva is an awesome instructor. He cares about his students, he's engaged, he loves to teach and it's obvious he loves stats. I'm not great at math but this class is unique in that it uses technology and more critical thinking skills rather than formulas - although there are some. His way of teaching is very adaptable very all. Take him!!
Professor Silva is one of the best math professors I've ever had. He makes the material easy to understand and tried to make the whole class have a fun time learning. He uses a flipped curriculum which works really well for the class. He's not a push over, but if you show up and do the work you'll do well.
He is amazing. Such a great teacher and enjoyable human. He really wants to set you up to succeed and wants to help you learn or with any questions you have. Great video notes. Gave extra credit opportunity. Let us use a note card for tests. Does assign a group project which he outlines very clearly. Seriously take him!
Professor Silva is the best choice to go with for Stats. He makes the class engaging and fun by allowing us to socialize with our fellow classmates. Notes are done at home and class time is used to work on worksheets and hands on activities about lesson. There can be a lot of homework sometimes but its manageable. Overall, recommend him 10/10
Prof Silva is a really caring and funny guy. This class was difficult at times but manageable. He encourages group work and interaction with the whole class. The format of the class is different from many classes because you do most homework and assignments in class while you do notes at home. Prof Silvas passion for stats makes class fun.
Best math professor at COC. He is extremely into statistics and cares so much about his students. Yes, there are a lot of assignments but they are engaging for the most part and broken down very easy. There is no textbook for the class and everything is done on canvas.
Prof. Silva really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed so if youre having problems, ask! Dont fall behind because you think its an easy A: you need to WORK for it! Wish he would have spent more time preparing for tests. The group projects felt unnecessary. I highly recommend taking him for honors though!
Professor Silva is a solid choice if youre not the best at math, hes kind of an awkward guy but you get use to the dad jokes. Hes very nice but the class does require a lot of work, including WEEKLY inspirational discussion boards. Definitely not an easy A.
He doesn't actually teach, he just makes you watch outdated videos created by him and his wife. In addition, there are so many typos and misspelled words on the exams. You can't review your exam without him hovering over your shoulder and he constantly accuses the class of cheating. Very tough class to pass.
Mr. Silva is easily the best math teacher you will ever have. You will not regret being in his class. I used to have a difficult time with math with other teachers but not with him. Hes INCREDIBLE, and doesnt hurt hes kind and funny. TAKE HIN
Dustin Silva is an amazing professor who cares about his students. Exams are worth almost half your grade, so make sure you study and show up to lectures. Lots of homework, and hell make you work for a good grade. But hes super accessible, funny, and he wants all of his students to pass his class. 10/10 would take his class again!
I took a hybrid class with professor S. Don't be afraid to ask for help he will help! He is very caring towards his students and wants everyone to be successful in his class. Study very hard and do your homework! Overall, he is an awesome professor!
Hands down one of the best professors and the best math professor I have ever had the pleasure of taking. He makes a tough course easy to understand, and as a person who struggles heavily with math, I was surprised to see how well I did in his class. Don't miss his lectures as he goes over everything and answers any questions you may have!
Prof. Silvia is really nice yet he can give ALOT of homework which can be overwhelming. I took a hybrid class for him and he will hand out ALOT of in class and lecture packets. Be prepare to get 15-20 assignments online and note packets due by next class. He's very hard on grading if you have a 77% or 79% he won't round it!
Silva is a legend. I had a crazy math fear and he helped me a lot. Theres a crazy amount of homework, but it's free points. they're easy and most have multiple attempts. His tests were fair and he was really good at engaging and explaining.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He is smart and bright. Also very funny. Before taking his class I hated math and would do anything but math. Now I'm still like that but I have learned that math can be fun and awesome even if you hate it. Highly recommend him.A lot of homework but they're not that bad, do them all and you'll be fine
This was one of the most enjoyable classes Ive ever taken. I dont like math at all and I looked forward to his class every Tuesday and Thursday night. His class is so relaxed, he jokes with the students and gives them candy, and he cares about every one of his students. I absolutely recommend his class.
Professor Silva is one of the best professors I have ever had. I have taken this class before, and failed so i was terrified to take it again. Mr. Silva made a difficult subject very manageable and I actually enjoyed coming to his classes. He is funny and always willing to help his students. There is a lot of homework but it helps you understand!
I've failed Math 140 once. Math isn't my strong suit at all but Professor Silva genuinely wants you to learn the concepts and pass his class. Because of him keeping class fun, clearly and simply communicating material and constantly encouraging us to collaborate with others -I did way better than I thought was possible. Take this guy!
HE DOES NOT TEACH THE CLASS! Pro. Silva had us watch his or his wifes lectures on YouTube. THIS CLASS WAS DIFFICULT! 277+ assignments for a math class... Tests were scary. He has a thing about cheating (he cut someones index card because it wasnt the "correct size". Honestly I would take a different Professor all together. Not sure how I passed.
if you're planning on taking this class i'd suggest you find someone else. Ridiculous amount of homework with unrealistic due dates. His lectures are you filling in the blanks and not helpful you're left with more questions than answers. if you ask for help he tells you to go back and read again. take someone else!!!
Wishing I was able to take Teachout. Dist. learning class is 100% w/ no textbook. WAAAYY too many lectures, articles to read, and a Mt. Everest size list of HW assignments (of which the "lecture" never prepares you for. On top of that, there is no zoom meetings and no consistent office hours. A plethora of discussions on top is an insult to injury.
Professor Silva was very helpful when it came to statistics. Math is my weakest subject but during COVID we were a hybrid class at night. Alot of homework and quizzes but you had a chance to take it 3 times with the highest score kept. Very fun and nice professor who cares about his students!
The 8wk summer virus sess. experience lacked cohesion. Often I found a disconnect between the lectures split between 2 different professors, vs. the classwork + hw. Got a standoffish vibe when contacting prof. silva for help. Canvas poorly structured, terribly organized and like some mention, there are a lot of assignments. The most I have seen.
I literally suck at anything math but professor Silva made stats so easy to understand!! Definitely recommend taking his class.
I took this class during the online quarantine time. And I was scared to take math online. You work on your own time and theres no mandatory zoom. The discussion videos were so fun to listen and so informative. I hate math but Professor Silva made it really easy and helpful. You dont need a textbook.
Kind of disappointed by the rate my professor when I first enrolled for this class. This class wouldn't let anyone of us breathe. Each week we had a discussion, 2-3 activities, 4 hw assignments, 10 pages of modules to read, 2-3 hours worth of video notes to watch and fill in, 4-5 quizzes, 4 exams throughout the semester, and a project. GL.
I really like the Professor and appreciate that he accepts late work but I am absolutely drowning in work for this class. There are 2 discussions, a bunch of notes that each have hour videos (usually 5 videos), bunch of quizzes, and practice work that is still graded every week. He has 4 tests that are open note but don't give a lot of time to do.
Although this course requires a lot of work and time, it's not that hard; just pace yourself. Prof Silva is super kind, caring, and incredibly helpful. There are two discussions most weeks but the topics are interesting; lots of homework and quizzes; four exams. He does offer extra credit and there is one "group" project, but you can do it alone.
Simply put, if you watch all the lectures and do all the assignments you will pass. The discussion posts were not difficult or time-consuming at all. For the final, they had an entire Study Jam that gave recaps of all the lessons and was surprisingly helpful and refreshed my mind. Everything is organized and I wouldn't be mad if I had to retake it.
There are 3 exams and a cumulative final (you can use your notes but it is proctored), 1 group project (it's optional to do it by yourself), 1-2 discussions per module (also have to reply to 2 ppl), and lots of homework, quizzes, and reviews (you get three attempts on homework and reviews but only one attempt on quizzes). Offers some extra credit
His class was pretty easy and straightforward. I took it during winter and the workload was HEAVY! He drops your lowest exam grade and replaces it with your final grade. He gives A LOT of hws. Overall, his class was easy! If you want to get a reasonable A, you can actually earn it. He takes the highest score on your homeworks.
Lots of homework and lectures, but made the concepts easy to understand. Prof. Silva was very organized and the lecture material very well. I wish I had more prof. who actually cared about their student's success! Do the work Easy A
Professor Silva is amazing! His lectures are easy to follow and he explains everything well. His lectures actually go with the assignments. There is one group project, but it's easy and he gives you the option to do it alone if you prefer that. Overall, I definitely recommend him!
Taking Intro to Stats with Prof. Silva was really interesting and fun! I learned a lot in that class, and it made me more confident in my math skills. His lectures are videos, and they're really easy to understand, along with the video notes that go along with it! There are a lot of assignments, but it's easy to manage.
Always struggled with math until I took his class. He's a lenient grader: up to 3 attempts w/ most assignments and quizzes, allows late work with some percent reduction. Lectures are easy to follow, and notes can be used on the proctored exam. Seems like a lot of work but I was able to knock out 1 of 2 weekly modules in one day.
Took his stats class during the 8 week summer semester. Lots of work due each week but if you plan on doing about 1 hour to 2 hours of work each day it is pretty manageable. If you do every assignment in the modules, you'll be prepared for the exam. I never felt the seen to study for his exams. There is one group project but you can to do it alone.
Super easygoing and great prof. Took the summer course but was super easy to knock out material. Final was super easy too, just make sure you are taking notes.
If you have the option of taking his class I highly recommend! His online stats class was straightforward and he was extremely flexible with test. He even allowed me to retake one after doing poorly! I also really liked his discussion post that went beyond just learning math and more about evaluating your current mindset and goals!
The amount of HW and videos I had to watch for this class was insane. This class had the equivalent work load of my other classes. I've spent hours upon hours doing notes and I don't have time to review any material because of other classes. Also you get new material up till finales week. Very stressful class even when managing your time properly.
This class had so many hours of lectures to complete and on top of that 10-15 assignments were assigned each week. It gets pretty difficult to balance work and this class along with other classes.
Good professor, explains the material in a straightforward way. Homework can be a lot but most are relatively easy as long as you took the lecture notes! All of the assignments are due on a specific day of the week so you're able to complete them at your own pace! Many of the tests are open-notes and follow the same structure as the homework.
Probably one of most unpleasant and most stress-inducing courses I've ever taken in the time I've been working on my associates degree. 56 assignments and an exam due on week 1, showed no empathy to students after being told the class homework service was offline nor after being emailed by multiple students regarding the extreme week 1 workload.
Great and Helpful Professor.
I took Math140 over the winter semester so it was condensed and tough. This is not an easy class and you have to stay on top of the assignments.Silva, D is a fair professor and does all he can to help you succeed. You can't skate in this class. I would not recommend the accelerated class if you aren't good at math. Take the regular semester class.
I loved Prof. Silva's class. The work is by no means easy but his videos and structure of the class makes the material understandable! I took it over the summer while also taking Anatomy. The course load is manageable, you just need to be organized. Lots of homework but they're small assignments. Open note exams. 10/10.
Professor Silva teaching style is unique because he's thorough with the material he teaches. Although there is alot of homework, this helps alot for exams. If you take this course online, you will have plenty of video notes, but these present alot of detail which helps grasp the subject matter. He's an amazing math teacher. I highly recommend him.
Online class was made up of many small assignments. It was easy as long as you keep up, coming from someone who doesn't like math. All assignments (except quizzes/exams) allow 3 tries. 3 unit tests & 1 final, each are remotely proctored. 1 group project, can choose to work alone. You'll have to buy access to StatCrunch for $15, but no textbook.
Overall difficult class, the videos were made by a different teacher. There is not enough practice or examples to understand thoroughly.
Lectures were long but thorough. I bombed the first exam and he allowed me to retake it but the highest I could get was a 75% or something. Exams were proctored and open note, but make sure you actually understand the material so that you don't waste time looking through your notes. Final is cumulative but I thought it was easy
The work load was INSANE. 10-15 assignments each week along with 90+ minutes of video notes. The professor is nice and understanding, but the work load is often too much to handle. Even when managing your time it can get extremely stressful. There are three exams, one group project (you can choose to work alone) and one final exam.
Prof. Silva is a gem. Though his class does have a hefty work load it is very manageable. After the 1+ of lecture notes which he goes very in depth with so its easy to understand the assignments only take like 10 mins tops. He always explains things really well and is a really nice guy and care if his students do good. Take this guy if you can.
Professor Silva is amazing! The 8-week class has a pretty high workload but it's manageable if you stay on top of things. He cares about his students and I loved the discussions. Tests were overall pretty easy.
Professor Silva is the best! Not only is he very understanding of his students but takes the time to get to know you. The material is very easy to understand and you can easily ask him questions if confused on anything. I highly recommend taking him. Do the work and pay attention and you will do great.
This class is tough, and you have to really pay attention to the lectures and take thorough notes. However, the assignments that follow the lectures are simple and straight forward. The exams are tough, and they are proctored. Professor Silva cares about his students mental health, and is easily accessible.
Ngl you work for the grade you want. Math-140 isn't an easy class but nothing against the Prof. You will need to print a lot of papers if you take this course online. He drops some of your lowest grades and you have a project which will be using StatCrunch data.
What a wonderful teacher. He truly cares about his students. I let him know that I struggle with math and ADD and he took extra time to help me understand the material. Also, he's a Whovian which is rad.
Great professor overall. Gives you enough material to understand and reinforce whatever new topic you are learning. Stats is one of the easier math classes and he really teaches everything you need to do at a digestible level. Exams were fair and open note.
Mr. Silva is very chill. His online course layout is simple. All tests are open book, including final, but all are remotely proctored. Only one group project with the option to do it by yourself. Must buy StatCrunch which is only $15. Lots of work, but is very manageable. Overall, just watch his videos, ask your questions, and you'll do great!
just finished the class, DONT underestimate the amount of work, 15-30 assigments a week, and I was on vaca sm places. I am a MASSIVE PROCRASTINATOR, its my fault i got this grade, many ppl got A . At least I passed, thats all I care about. He responds typically fast if you have questions, and he said final grade replaces worst exam, theres 3+ fina
Tests are open note, relatively easy multiple choice. Did all the work ahead of time and typically had no homework for 2 weeks at a time. Make sure you take notes on the videos, typically ~3-5hrs a week and the CW/HW is straightforward. Allows late work, but it is easiest if you finish stuff ahead of time.
I took Professor Silva's online Math140 class and it was great. I spent about 2-3 hours each day doing work that wasn't hard at all. His lectures introduced concepts really well. I can't say one bad thing about him.
Genuinely love Silva! He truly cares about his students and is transparent with how he grades. Gives EC opportunities. Assignments are not hard, spent 2-3 hours on them. Exams were straightforward and easy for the most part. Online videos as lecture which is so helpful. Easy to contact, and grades fairly. Highly recommend!
There is a lot of material in this class between quizzes and homework due two days of the week in the 8 week course. However, Professor Silva is very caring and makes himself available when you need help. Very responsive to emails and office hours. If you put in the work, you will do well. If you're taking this class, take it with Professor Silva.
Such a good stats professor, defientely who you want to take statistics with. He really goes above and upon in terms of his teaching and the resources he provides for his students. There's a good amount of assignments assigned each week, they're easy to stay on top of, and videos are given as a guide for each new concept taught. Do the video notes!
Would be a 5 if not for his use of Honorlock. This forced me to purchase a camera to connect to my monitor in order to take his exams as well as forcing me to disconnect my second monitor from my computer. It does not allow for any tabs other than approved ones to be open. Slight invasion of privacy as well. Otherwise he is a fantastic professor
I loved this class. The professor is very caring and truly wants you to succeed. He reaches out to all his students giving them a chance to improve on tests. Would 100% recommend to anyone
Professor Silva has a very straightforward grading curriculum, DO NOT procrastinate in this class, there is so much material to cover and if you are not following it you will not do good. I'm a big procrastinator and I didn't put much effort into the class resulting in my B-, He has lots of opportunities for you to succeed so take them.
Overall easy class. Don't take the online format for granted. Work piles up if you're procrastinator, so stay on top of it. Make sure you watch the video notes, and study for exams. Exams are proctored by Honorlock, but the tests are open note thankfully. Just study, and watch the videos and you'll be just fine.
This was a great class. There is a lot of work to do, and the exams are proctored through honor lock online, but Professor Silva truly cares about his class and wants people to succeed. I still had to put in the effort and study for my A, but Professor Silva made topics easier to understand and put in the effort to answer any questions I had.
Professor Silva is great! I am not good at math but I managed a B in this class! He gives a lot of assignments but they are usually small. Like a multiple choice with 10 questions. Tests were tricky for me but if you do your notes and assignments you will be fine. He values mental health and cares for his students! Choose him!
Class was a lot of work, but he had good lectures. I do not like math but he made it pretty easy for me to geta good grade. The exams are proctored which is not fun.
Took his winter course and tbh I think it was simple. Sometimes the videos were VERY long but his hw/cw assignments were not challenging whatsoever. His tests are straightforward but some questions are tough. If you stay on top of the notes and do the hw assignments youll do fine. I am not a math person at all and found it to be light work.
Super nice professor and always helped when needed. Stats can get confusing but I was easily able to understand the concepts. Lots of assignments but they help. Lecture videos can be long but pay attention so you can understand!
Professor Silva was one of the best professors I have had. I took the hybrid class which I enjoyed. We learned the material at home by watching his video notes and filled in the blanks on the worksheets. Then in class we did activities and went over the material/ any questions we had. Overall I really enjoyed the class and would recommend him!
I took professor Silva's MATH 140 class online during spring 2025 and it was great! Lectures are simple and easy to comprehend, there is lots of homework though, so make sure you stay on top of all of it! The exams do use honorlock but it is open note as long as its on paper, and they simple but make sure you understand and can do everything alone!
Professor Silva is really nice, always be there to answer questions. However, TON OF HOMEWORK. Exam are pretty hard. More than 10 paper printed each module. And why do we have a project in Math class. Require a lot of time to study in this class and barely even have time for other class. It might not be that hard but prepare to study hard.
An A is possible if you put the work in. I wouldn't suggest taking this class if you're already taking a lot of credits in the same semester. it's hard to keep up with the multiple 1 hour long videos and lots of assignments. Exams are proctored, timed, open note. Also the lecture vid notes aren't SUPER helpful on exams so don't rely on them.
He is a good teacher, but his grading can be a little picky and there is so much homework. If you have a lot of credits and multiple classes it is quite hard to keep up. Other than that I did learn a lot!
He seems like a nice guy who cares for his students, but this class was definitely not for me. There was so much work, I do not recommend taking him or his wife if you are taking other courses throughout your semester. Insane amount of work, which is oddly distributed throughout the week sometimes, rather than on sunday or friday.
Don't take his class. I promise you if you miss 1 point on his quizzes or exams your grade will drop tremendously. Hours of work and didn't let me focus on my other classes. Completely unfair when you struggle ask him for help and tells you sorry no. He never mentions his wife is teaching which throws you off completely because she makes no sense.
100% would take his class again. He does give a lot of assignments, but you have about a week to complete them and they're pretty easy. I would finish my assignments in one day.
LOTS OF HOMEWORK A WEEK 16 assignments D.Silva doesn't mention it on the syllabus but his wife also teaches this class. She's on 95% of the video notes.I didn't like her teaching. Also if you look her up on here you can see her rating A. Silva. If I would've known she was teaching it instead of D.Silva I wouldn't have taken it EXAMS ARE HONOR LOCK
If you fail or get a low grade on the first 2 exams you are going to STRUGGLE to get that grade back up.The final is worth 12% which is low so make sure you are doing all the hw and getting 100% on the quizzes. ALSO HIS EXAMS ARE HONOR LOCK! I normally don't ever leave reviews for professors but I am trying to save you by giving you a heads up.
Wow I have never struggled with a class like this one. D.Silva never mentioned his wife is teaching on his syllabus which throws you off. Most of the time it's her teaching. Might as well be ambikas class rather than silvas. She is really hard to understand and the grading is completely unfair. I never thought I had to write a review like this.
Let me save you some time and move on to another professor. Im not sure why he had his wife teaching when its HIS class. Ambikas teaching is very confusing compared to how he teaches which is very little. Quizzes and exams are proctored and are extremely difficult. Never had a class with so much work like this one ! Lots of paper YOU NEED to print.
a lot of papers to print out for hw and lectures. exams are proctored but open notes. exam grading is tough and hw is easy since you get three chances. his wife taught most of the lectures she was very confusing 4 exams total got 2 B's and 3 C's but still passed with an A. cool teacher just a lot of long lectures, tough grading
cool prof but a lot of papers to print, lecture heavy, and a lot of hw. his wife taught most of the lectures and she was very confusing. I got 2 B's and 2 C's and exams but still got an A-. Easy hw and quizzes you just got to know what your doing. he's also a tough grader on exams and exams are kinda hard. lectures could be 30m-50min long
I fought so hard for an A and he said even if u have a 89.9% he wont round. There are so many questions on the exams that don't correlate with the notes that you spend so long writing. We got ONE extra credit opportunity. He seems really nice but his class (which is taught literally by his wife) is ridiculous.
Say goodbye to having a stress free life and hello to homework and stress! I have never thought an online course could give me so much stress in my own house. For literally 16 weeks all I could think about was statistics. With the amount of work and and the hard exams, I wish I took it with someone else. But if you have the bravery go for it!
Lots of videos, but if you watch on 2x speed and knock it out for 2-3 hours a week, it's doable. Silva responded to questions in a timely manner. Honorlock for tests, but allowed to use notes. Understand the concepts, don't take hours trying to write everything down.
Professor Silva's class was honestly pretty easy. You get multiple attempts on both the quizzes and the homework assignments, and all of the exams are open note, so I found that I did not need to study that much for this class. The only downside is that there is a lot of work to complete—but like I said, the content itself is not difficult.
Professor Silva is a cool guy! He's clear with what he expects from your assignments, his lectures, and grading criteria. He can give a lot of homework, but it's not that bad. He's helpful with any confusion you might have. I'd recommend taking him!
This class was a 50/50 for me. When you did get Dustin teaching your classes everything made a lot of sense, but when his wife was teaching it (which was most of the time) it was extremely confusing. There is also about 20 ish assignments due every week if you take the shortened class. They are short assignments, but still excessive.
I recommend taking this class with someone else. There is just too much to keep track of especially if you have other classes. With the amount of work I had to do I did not feel prepared at all for exams. And if you score low he expects you to write an essay just for a chance at a retake at which you will not be able to score over a 70%....yeah.
Pretty cool professor! Had him for online and one thing you should know is that you need to watch the lecture videos and take notes on them. His exams were open note, so as long as you do those things, you'll be good. Sometimes his wife is the one doing the lecture videos and I found her style of teaching to be more confusing than his.
Awesome guy. The class is very easy and the exams are open note.
