Easily one of the best professors at UNC. This class is a seminar and until now, I had never seen a teacher establish such a bond of trust with their students that students were comfortable enriching the class with details of their private life and experiences to such a large extent. This class made me feel valued as a person and gave me a voice.
Dwayne is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. Besides giving amazing lectures, he is emphatically passionate and knowledgeable about his area of study. His class changed me in so many ways and it was one of the few I looked forward to going to. One warning I would say is that he assigns a lot of reading.
Dixon is one of the most passionate professors I have ever had. His lectures are interesting and engaging. He truly cares about the subject and his students. At times, there is a lot of assigned reading (but they are almost always captivating). His tests are FAIR, not meant to trick or fail students. It is necessary that you are engaged in class
Dwayne is a great guy and the assignments you have are easy and graded leniently. However, he gets up there and preaches his political agenda which is kind of annoying. If you can deal with that though, it is definitely worth the GPA boost. The final is only worth 10% of your grade and the only reason he has one is because it is required.
Dr. Dixon is the most passionate lecturer and most well spoken professor I have had so far at UNC. Take his classes, he won't try to hurt your GPA, show what you have learned and you will be rewarded with a grade and some captivating lectures.
Dwayne is a very kind man and a captivating lecturer who truly cares about his students. The course content was interesting and the grading was quite lenient. He tends to ramble about his strong political beliefs, which did annoy some. The lectures and GPA boost, however, are totally worth it.
Dwayne is a kind person, but as a professor, he was incredibly disorganized & the course overall felt chaotic. There are many readings assigned, & depending on which grading schema you choose, there are different assignments & he is a lenient grader. The course was not what it appeared to be advertised as, and was very complex and abstract.
Professor Dixon is a captivating lecturer who facilitates profound discussions during lecture. Although there is a lot of readings assigned, they aren't required if you go to lecture and pay attention. If you do the small amount of work he asks of you, you will be rewarded with great lectures and an A. This class is a great GPA boost/GenEd provider
The best professor I have ever met in UNC. Graduate-level papers but easy A as long as you finish all the assignment (you could pick any themes you want). Treat students as human and share all of his own stories and perspective to the class deeply and truly. RESPECT.
Attendance: Lecture is not mandatory, recitation is (this is where you get your "pop" quizzes) Workload: Weekly/daily readings, midterm, 10 page paper, final -- midterm was very easy and straightforward Professor: very understanding, funny and kind of quirky, he's very open and really advocates for students/listens to our concerns
Dwayne is the goat.
Dwayne is super woke and cares a lot about what he teaches. It is easy to not pay attention in class though. He allows you to basically choose how you want your class to be structured. Schema 1 seemed easiest to me. Easy A and you learn a lot
He is an understanding, passionate professor and just expects you to put in the work. You get to choose how you get graded based on different schemas. Although his lectures tend to be confusing at times, if you try to understand and do the work correlated with your schema it should be a relatively easy class for the gen eds.
Dixon was an amazing professor. He is very passionate about Asian studies and you will learn a lot. You also get to choose how you're graded and the final was a 10 question super easy T/F. Easy A and engaging material.
Dwayne is the goat. Super easy class. Grading schemas were very fair and the final exam was a breeze. There are lots of reading but they are not necessary if you pay attention during class. Easy class.
He is a great guy who is very passionate about the topic but is extremely disorganized at times. Some of the topics are explained in a confusing manner, but if you do the readings, you should be fine. There are readings before every class, a few pop quizzes, a recitation presentation, midterm, 10-page paper, and a final. Overall, would recommend
Professor Dixon discusses a lot of intense social concepts, and he really challenges society's thinking. He is an amazing lecturer and his class was easy to get an A in. There are not many grades in the class but the ones he gives he grades leniently.
Too political
Dwyane is a Leader of an Antifa Group. He is a far-left individual. Most importantly, he's a chill ass professor. Take him your first semester if you are new or looking for an easy class. He assigns readings, but you can honestly skip them if you just come to class and pay attention. He has one paper (easy, 5 pages) and the final is easy as cake.
I took professor Dixion FALL 2020 at UNC. He was amazing. I thought his class was interesting and it was easy to remember material. His class took me the least amount of time and could be considered an easy A as long as you do the work. This is definitely the GEN ED class you want to take (with this professor).
Although Dwayne is a super chill guy, he is extremely political and his lectures are basically just his leftist opinions and he goes off on many tangents to the point where its confusing. Don't take this class unless you're actually interested or you will just be annoyed like me.
I loved this class! Dwayne is so nice and really cares about his students. His lectures are so interesting and the quizzes are NOT hard at all.
He is one of the most amazing lecturers I have ever heard. His goal is not to make his students memorize a bunch of useless facts, but to really cause them to think about the world in a different way. Though he talks about serious topics, he does not assign a ton of difficult assignments to stress you out or hurt your grade. Amazing and fun class
This is a must have professor right here ladies and gents. Content is easy and life-changing If you hate discussing politics in a class that surrounds the topic of Asian nations, that might be your own problem. Either way, I can guarantee that you'll learn something new. Dude does not miss.
DWAYNE is OG LEGEND Super Prof who is SOOO OUTSPOKEN with principle in academic teaching and caring/understanding for students---especially in COVID season. He is so eloquent and knowledgeable and is passionate about what he teaches and stands for! He is open minded and will never impose beliefs on you. EASY CLASS, so meaningful!! TAKE HIM! :-)
Easily the most understanding teacher I've ever had! So approachable and engaging. Some reviews say that he's "too political," but Dwayne is open-minded, and we're living in a politically demanding decade. Plus the class is literally based on an entire continent. Everyone was so sad when class ended- now we stay connected on Discord! TLDR: Take it!
Dwayne is amazing! He is very caring, understanding, and so passionate about what he teaches. Dwayne genuinely cares about us as human beings and taught us to think critically about the world. Dwayne definitely prioritized our learning and having an outlet to have fruitful discussions despite ZoomU rather than stressing us out with grades. Love him
I loved his class. It was very interesting. There's a lot to read, but he goes everything in his lectures so don't worry if you don't understand everything.
Dwayne is literally the coolest ever. His class was super chill and relatively easy. You will have to do the readings and listen to the audio lecture(s) every week, but if you take notes on the audio lecture by the end of the class you'll have no problem passing the relatively easy final. He really cares about his students and it shows!
This class was super easy and enjoyable to take. This is the second class I have taken with Professor Dixon and I suggest to everyone to do the same. There was minimal homework and the assignments were graded nicely. The professor and the TA's want you to do well and they are quick to communicate whenever there are questions.
I absolutely love this man. He is by far the most caring professor at UNC. He cares so much about his students and is so passionate about what he teaches. He makes the topics so interesting and I cannot recommend enough that you take any course taught by Dwayne.
Dwayne genuinely cares about his students so much and he is not a tough grader whatsoever. He always made his students feel cared about and if you listen to the lectures and grasp the concepts from the lectures even if you don't from the readings, you can easily get an A. Would highly recommend taking ASIA-150 with him, and his other courses too!
Dwayne was very chill and so caring to students. He's very passionate and knowledgeable in this subject and the class gives 3 gen eds too. The TAs are also very nice. The work itself is very easy - couple forums, couple 5 question quizzes, and typical final paper and final exam. There is a presentation in your recitation. Highly recommend!
Professor Dixon is one of the more chill professors at UNC. He is easy on grading forums and the quizzes are simple as long as you pay attention in class and read the assignments. Finals are a walk in the park as well. Highly recommend for a gen ed credit or an easy A.
Professor Dixon is a very interesting and caring Professor. This class has a small number of assignments, a paper, and a presentation, which are easy to get high marks. His quizzes and final exam are very simple.
Taken 2 courses with him in one semester, Best Professor ever!!!!
This semester was really hard for me, and only his course saved my days. I felt like I was actually learning, and I didn't feel a lot of pressure. He was understanding, and he pays attention to each of his students. If you can and want, take a class with him.
Dixon gives phenomenal lectures that turn into very fulfilling discussions. He also understands that we are human beings and is very caring and understanding of personal circumstances. Daily readings or videos are assigned, but all the material is very engaging and interesting. Highly recommend taking a class with him if you can!
Love Dwayne so much! He is a wonderful professor and I highly recommend him! :) There are very interesting readings and he makes discussion very fun and interesting!
Best Professor at UNC!! Honestly nothing else to add! Take this class if needed or interested! :)
Professor Dixon is a very funny and unique kind of professor - the kind that doesn't care about grades. He likes to introduce people to topics in Asia and Japan but doesn't care too much what you take away from it as long as you learn something. Just make sure to do the assignments since they are each worth a lot.
Dwyane is understanding and cares about his students hes more focused on their wellbeing than anything else. He's super disorganized and the format of his lectures is him just talking at us no PowerPoints, textbooks, etc. which kinda made it hard for me to learn. we had an essay with no rubric and he never told me why he took of points, no feedback
AMAZING!! He really cares about his students and will make sure they know that. Easy class, but you get to learn a lot.
This guy is a little weird but the class is very easy. Got an A without going to most classes or doing any of the readings at all. The class is fully online unrelated to covid rules, and involves very little actual work. The only real assignments are a short essay at the end and a short presentation in recitation; both were very easy
Smiling everyday, he is super nice and caring! His lectures are awesome! I always learn a lot and never feel boring. Respect every student from different countries. Encourage everyone to participate in the welcoming discussion. Nothing much to say just love him sooo much! Best professor for me in UNC! Really recommend this class!
This professor was the best I have had at UNC. He truly cares about you and the issues we face in the world today and hoe we are impacted by them. I have never met someone with something even remotely bad to say about this guy. He values you, your background, and your time and it shows with how he structures the class and assignments.
Poor instruction!
I absolutely LOVE this man. He's the best. Take his classes if you can.
Take any class that Prof Dixon offers. He is passionate about what he teaches and that passion is reflected in his lectures, if you are at all interested in the course content like I was, you will LOVE his class! His JAPN 482 class was also amazing and a good step up from ASIA 150 in terms of rigor. Do your education a favor and take his class.
Dwayne was absolutely amazing! ASIA 150 is one of the most engaging classes at UNC, but also one of the easiest. Attendence not required, he posts everything online and quizzes are super easy. Only 1 paper what was 4-5 pages, super easy to write. Readings were long, but you could skim. Recitation had 1 presentation per person, was short and easy.
Really easy class, and really nice and caring professor! His teaching/lecture style is kind of disorganized, but he's clearly very passionate about what he's teaching. The class is just a bunch of readings, a couple of essays, a final project, and the final exam is really easy.
The class honestly has like no structure. We had to read a lot of stuff, but Dixon was somewhat vague on what exactly we had to retain. On the first day of lecture he literally said "the content material is too vast to really learn anything." Regardless, still an easy A and the readings are optional if you go to class.
Dr. Dixon was extremely accommodating to student needs, always responding to emails and understanding of student conflicts. There are 3 short research posts, 4 five-question quizzes, 1 long essay, and 1 presentation during recitation. Great professor as well as a great and easy course.
Very... eccentric character of a professor, but super easy grader and very accommodating of anything. Gives extensions for any reason. Class was basically just a discussion about random stuff lol and the class had no structure. Showing up to recitation gets you all the points. Did not try at all, extremely easy A for a GenEd. Definitely recommend!
Super great professor. The class was definitely a moderate load, but this is because we actually learned. I don't know why the reviews say the class was super easy. It definitely encouraged learning.
I think he's a great professor, my only issue is that there are so few assignments that if you even mess up one all of a sudden your looking at an A- or a B+ even.
Dwayne is the easiest professor I've ever had. I took both JAPN162 and ASIA150. Dwayne's super animated and engaging. Final grade consists of a few online quizzes and forum posts, a presentation graded by TA, final paper, and a take-home final. Readings assigned weekly, but only need to skim them, especially if you go to class. Highly recommend!
Professor Dixon cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He can get sidetracked during lecture but they are interesting and valuable and some of the disorganization occurs in this class because of the sheer amount of content being covered in one semester. Readings can be long at times but they are always good, digestable texts.
Gives his own one sided perspectives to ongoing issues. Prefers teaching about certain ethnic groups over others. Certain groups were only discussed in a negative light and often villainized. Talks about Middle East more than Asia. Tries to relate to experiences of POC. But if you don't care about that not a difficult class.
Professor Dixon was an amazing professor. He was very caring towards his students and made sure to prevent stress throughout the semester. He offered multiple extra credit opportunities during the semester as well as being very forward with his grading. He was inspirational throughout the semester and I would highly recommend to take this class.
Dr. Dixon was a great professor; he always made an effort to engage the class in meaningful discussion and gave ample opportunity for extra credit, etc. Definitely one of the most stress-free and understanding professors at UNC. Would totally recommend this class, especially if you need something to buffer between more advanced/harder ones.
Dr. Dixon is the GOAT. Please do your college semester a favor by taking this course. I guarantee you will love this class more than any gen-ed you have ever taken at UNC.
The class was soooo easy and I learned a lot (if you pay attention in lectures). He clearly cares about his students and wants the best for them. He does get sidetracked a lot in lectures which is very offputting. You have like 4 actual graded assignments which are easy. I def recommend him.
Easiest class to fulfill a gen ed!! Lectures are very interesting but only recitation is mandatory (you do have 3 attendance drops so it's pretty lenient). Class has a few discussion posts, one presentation, a final paper, and a final project. TONS of extra credit opportunities that are weighted quite high! highly recommend for an easy class
Extremely easy class. Attendance is not mandatory; hence, many people do not attend his lectures. However, the lectures were so interesting that I wanted to go just to hear his insights on current global matters. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and is very understanding.
There's a lot of reading, but the professor is really cool and knowledgeable. He tries to help students as much as he can and is clearly passionate about what he is teaching.
I took ASIA150 with Prof. Dixon, Fall 2023. Prof. Dixon is a really passionate professor who isn't afraid to give takes to students who care to hear and listen. Throughout his lectures, from modern issues to material covered in weekly readings, I love him for his caring attitude towards. By far one of the most influential courses I've taken at UNC!
Probably the nicest professor I've had so far, considering how he is a lenient grader and accomodating to deadline extensions. Prof. Dixon is also well-informed on the subject and makes it both interesting and topical. You can tell he cares every lecture, especially during his personal anecdotes There is no reason NOT to take a course with him.
Professor Dixon was super nice! This class was fun and interesting and was not stressful, very good class to take if you are looking for a GPA booster. Everything is online, all quizzes and tests, there was one paper and one presentation for a recitation but overall totally recommend!
Super funny guy who tells stories about his past. There are a few research posts on Canvas (super easy), online quizzes, and a recitation presentation you have to do based on a topic covered in class. Take a class with him if you want an A. There are some readings and films but honestly don't spend too much time on it. Overall recommend!
One of the best professors I had so far. His sincerity and enthusiasm about topics could be felt by the class. His lectures are fascinating, and he sometimes talks about his experiences too. Graded on a few essays and short posts about current class topics, which he grades very leniently. Definitely take his class if you can!!!
He is great! Quizzes are very simple, and so is the Final Exam. Essay grading is dependent on your TA. There is 5 points of extra credit on the Final Exam which are not too hard to get which could boost your overall grade by 5 whole points!
Professor Dixon is my favorite professor I have taken here. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and has many interesting tidbits from his personal life relating to his lessons. However, he frequently refers the class to current national and global events, such as climate change, that stress some students out.
One of my favorite professors. Dwayne is so engaging and is so willing to talk about anything, clearly passionate about what he does and really cares about the students. Material can be a little challenging at times without background knowledge but I really recommend putting in some effort since the course can be rewarding and pretty low stakes.
Really easy class, all the quizzes are asynch, and the final exam is too. Professor Dixon cares a lot about the class and is generally a very nice professor. Take this class!
So easy, i never study but get a 100 for the final grade
Wasn't exactly an "introduction" to Asia - you need to have some background knowledge to understand his lectures. It was still an easy class and you can tell he's really passionate about the subject!
I took this class for a FC, and it was interesting. Professor Dixon is clearly passionate about the subject, which I appreciated, but he often got sidetracked with tangents seemingly unrelated to the lesson plan. There was a PowerPoint, 6 quizzes, and a final paper and exam. Overall, the class wasn't too difficult and challenged deeper thinking.
Really odd professor. Didnt know if class would consist of actual learning or off-tangents he'd go on based on current events. Would openly talk about his political views and be passive aggressive to those with diff beliefs. Final consisted of material we covered maybe 1% of class time. Wouldnt recommend, wouldnt take again
Professor Dixon goes above and beyond to help us be more culturally aware of what is going on in the world around us. His grading criteria is fair and reasonable and he tries to get to know every student on a more personalized level as well.
he was the goat. take the class you wont regret it
even though we disagree on many things, i have become good friends with him. he is an amazing teacher, and i actually enjoyed the class, even though it was taken for gen ed, and i would take it again. he is so passionate about teaching, not just in the classroom. he is amazing at fostering different ways of thinking in his class as well.
Professor Dixon is a spectacular lecturer and does make his class worth your time. Not completely necessary to attend lectures to receive a good grade but it does help for quizzes and building knowledge of information about topics. Would 100% take his class again and is an relatively easy focus capacity.
Such an amazing lecturer, and the content was really interesting.
Great teacher, easy focus capacity. TA's grade very easily and the first quiz may be hard but they offer extra credit. Take home exam with 5 extra credit points.
EASY AF...TA graded leniently and generously offered numerous extra credit opportunities.
Awful... the professor makes you feel super uncomfortable in class. Im not paying him for him to rant about his personal opinion on the political situation of the world. Definitely not a beginner's class, you need to have some basic experience with the material beforehand. DONT go to his office hours, he's incredibly judgy and rude.
Took this class in the spring, very easy class as long as you keep up with it. It can be TA-reliant, but I've never heard of somebody having a tough time in this class. Dwayne is definitely an interesting guy, but I'd say the people in these reviews trashing him are overreacting.
Dixon was my best professor to date. Period. As a premed, asia 57 was an opportunity to explore something worldly and expand past hard sciences. Dwayne knows his place and doesn't make this a hard class, but provides more than enough space to make this an exceptional exploratory course. Talk to him after class; he is truly inspiring.
Excellent human being and teacher.
Dwayne is one of the most inspiring and talented individuals I've ever had the privilege to learn from.
One of the best professors I have ever had at UNC. He was extremely caring and very respectful of all students. It is evident he wants all of his students to succeed and is an invaluable member of the UNC community.
The goat, no more needed to be said.
Good prof, easy class
Dr. Dixon is amazing and incredibly passionate about his work. I really enjoyed his lectures and the class content, I definitely recommend this course to anyone especially with it's light workload.
Overall, Professor Dixon is a very passionate and caring professor. But my issue with the class is that he assigns too many very lengthy readings, especially for a 100-level course. Like 1-3 40+ page readings before each MW class. Do not take this class if you have a busy schedule or hard classes and are looking for a chill class.
He wants you to succeed. He really cares for us.
GOAT! AMAZING!
The class is so chill, take home quizzes and short responses every so often. The final exam is online but its so hard. I recommend doing as much Extra Credit and get 100s and all the assignments so your final exam grade doesnt really matter.
Dwayne is the best teacher I've had so far at UNC and probably the nicest guy I have ever met. Take his class, you will not regret it!
Highly recommend taking Asia 150 with Dwayne. One of the best lecturers and provides generous extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Grade is made up of 3 discussion posts, 4 short quizzes, a paper, presentation, and the final.
Dixon is a great professor with interesting lectures! There are a lot of readings, some writing assignments, and a presentation but nothing too hard. Pretty easy class with an engaging professor.
Very interesting lectures
Do your bonus and you don't have to go to class. Respect for my GOAT professor
Dwayne is awesome. He is so passionate about his subject and was engaging even tho this is a gen ed for me. Final was in person on lockdown browser, but only like 25 questions.
