This guy sucks.
This guy is not liked he needs to go back to long beach
The greatest teacher in chemistry department. His lecture are briliant, his explanations are very clear, he provides a huge amount of helpful material. He is always avalable to help. Yes, you have to work hard in his class, but he is very, very fair.
A really good teacher. Will help you when you need it, is a fair grader, tests are medium- hard (but I suck at dimensional analysis!). Would definitely take 200 w/him if he taught it!
Really good teacher;demands a lot;strict in grading. If you really want to do well in his class, you need to read, ask questions, take notes on everything. He offers help if you are willing to learn. He likes who tries hard in his class. After his class, you will be fully prepared for the next class!!!
He is a excellent teacher. He knows a lot of material. The smartest chem teacher at Mesa. He can answer any questions that you post to him. He is stingy in his grading, but that helps you improve in your work next time.TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A CHALLENGE.DON'T EXPECT AN EASY A.Expect rude comments.
He loves to hear his own voice but he is fair and nice, he know his stuff.
v. helpful & willing to take xtra time with students & likes to see you at office hrs. but he made mistakes at the board, mistakes on exams, students had to correct him. not good. gave us an INSANE amount of handouts, overwhelming & confusing. tests are exactly like the pre-tests which is great.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! He is all over the place, disorganized in his thought processses and expects you to know everything he knows about Chemistry. He tests you on things the day after he throws them at you. He tests you on things he hasn't taught yet. It is horrible.
Dont take him if you can avoid it. I would take Toto. Gergens is not very nice or helpful.
Better be able to mind read and accept that everyone else is confused and struggling just like you - too much to list, some have been already said - tests on materials JUST or NOT covered - errors upon errors in powerpoint and typos on tests - makes it more stressful than has to be, esp. if you truly wish to learn the subject of chemistry. TRUE!
Just be prepard to do a lot of computer assignments, WebCT and CPR - this is different but will prepare you with higher educational skills. Serious and dedicated students are bound to benefit, but communicating with prof is crucial if you run into problems with his style. YOu will get lots of info, plenty of handouts and great info 4 now & later!
The '3 hours out of class for every hour in' holds true. This class (along with lab) felt like 3 classes. An enormous workload, but always fair.
He is tough, but you will learn a lot in his class
If you have a passion for chemistry, then I guess you can go ahead and take him if you have no choice. Other than that, I dont recommend this guy honestly.
i was very interested in chem and i was looking forward to this class, but this professor turned me away. He was very rude, his tests unclear, and he wasn't helpful. I recommend not taking him unless you know everything about chem, like he thinks he does.
He is quite difficult and leaves everyone in the class very confused. Be prepared to not know when anything is due or what exactly he expects you to do. Every question will be followed by a page # of the assigned book or of his terribly constructed lab manuel that has more errors than anything I ever turned in to him. He's an idiot.
This truly was the most poorly taught class ever. He is very smart and could be a great teacher, but he is terrible. You will never know what you are doing in class, when things are due or what you should be working on. It is the most frustrating class ever because of this, but you wont fail the class unless you really dont do any work.
This teacher does not want to teach. He knows the material but thinks that we should too before he teaches it. And if you ask questions he makes you feel very stupid. Homework is assigned but no due date is ever given so you have no idea when things need to be turned in.
HORRIBLE! The class material was hard enough and he teaches as though we've taken years of chemistry! He is unclear about when and what material to cover. He does answer questions but the answers are often more confusing than the question! AVOID HIM!
He's disorganized, and he can't stay on topic in lectures. His packet and old exams are quite helpful; he doesn't even use the textbook. You can get an A, but you basically have to teach yourself or use a tutor.
I just can't believe the comments I've read about this guy. Chem 100 is tough, but his explanations are very clear and he's relaxed and friendly. He takes time to answer questions and goes out of his way to be available in his office, by phone or e-mail for help. He's a great teacher and a nice guy.
by far the most horrible teacher I have ever had, avoid this guy at all costs. His lectures bounce all over the place his expectations are never clear, you pretty much just teach yourself. He is completly unhelpful and will not work with you as far as lab packets. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
this is a hard class but if you want to learn chemistry you will. lots of powerpoints to help study, plus old test to study from- he basically uses the same format test every time. does cool demos in class with fire and stuff, usually available in his office to help with problems, not bad looking either!
First of all, the subject is extremely difficult. Challenges students with lots of homework, online quizzes, and exams. Only two exams in the classroom - midterm, final. Provides a lot of info in class that includes methods behind the madness. He wants students to be capable, thoughtful chemists not cookbook chemists. Opportunity for presentations.
OMG i f*king hate his guts! He's disorganized and unclear in his lectures..he jumps around from topic to topic until I don't know what he's talking about anymore. He's not a great helper, and acts like a snob when you ask him questions. O. Chem is hard enough, but he makes your life a living hell. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!
Don't listen to the people that say he is great. This professor will screw you over. Especially if you take his Lab and Lecture together. His lectures do jump all over the place. He does get snobby when you ask him questions because he thinks he so up there with his PH.D from Irvine and CSULB. Trust ME ...DON't TAKE HIM !!!!!!
Horrible. Unorganized. Can never remember due dates, sometimes forgets to collect stuff, takes weeks to grade anything. Picks favorites, expects everyone to do extra on every lab, and if you dont, he marks you down. Is unclear about what he wants on assignments, and throws out test questions completely from left field Dont take him!!!
TERRIBLE. Not only is he EXTREMELY weird, but he just expects you to know everything about chemistry even before taking this class. Plus there is over 20 quizzes and tests are hard. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!
He is very helpful for finding new ways of explaining things. But he has some very odd opinions for a chemist such as not believing in global warming!
Dr. Gergens was pretty laid back and very nice. He was clear on what was to be learned and had a website. He even made an Itunes video for the class to download. Chem is a difficult course but he was excited about it and taught it well. I got an A
don't take him or u will be regret......crazy grader....check for grammar and stuffs......OH GOSH.....
You should probably go into this class knowing a little bit about chemistry, even though its basic, still. if you don't know anything he isn't the teacher for you. He is a good guy though, quizzes pretty much every week. no tests except midterm and final.
DO NOT take this teacher. I took him in spring 05 for my 1st semester. Just before the drop with a W date, he gave the take home midterm out a week early w/o prior notice. I was out for my 2nd time in the semester. He gave me 3hrs to do the take home or fail so I had to drop the class.
Great guy, but unfortunately a very poor instructor. Very difficult grader too. Suggest you try Prof Zand instead - he is very good at actually teaching the material.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL!!! He is a great guy, but not a good teacher! Very unorganized, unclear, and hard.
I like the guy but there isn't much else I can say about him. He's extremely knowledgeable and for that reason I think he has a hard time teaching a beginning chemistry course. He puts a lot of his lectures in podcasts and when asked questions he refers you to them instead of explaining it right then and there.
Dr. G was very fair prof. Ochem is challenging & requires A LOT of time but you will definitely get out of it what you put in. His tests can be tough but he gives you plenty of opportunities to bring your grade up and he's always available to answer questions. He may not have a set lesson plan but he follows the book. Read ahead and you'll do fine.
He once told me I didnt have what it takes. He told me I wasnt cut out for his class. Guess what! Now im in Pharmacy School after recieving a bachealor at UCSD. I guess someone isnt cut out for teaching. Horrible teacher. Rediculous class. This guy is no real teacher. The school board should remove his liscence.
He is a great lecturer, explains things well. Still his class is VERY tough. It's very demanding, lots of work. He weeds people out in the beginning but once you establish yourself as a good student, it gets better. I wanted to pull my hair out at times, but I'm glad I took him now because I was well prepared for Chem 233.
Come 2 class, do the wrk, ask questions & use resources offered, ie podcasts he makes for the you & you'll pass. Maybe easier w/lil' chem knwldge. Willing 2 help u succeed, but as w/anything u must put time & effort in. Tk home mid-term. Online quizzes, tests (w/practice)Few class quizzes. Enjoys teaching!

I took this professor a few years ago. He was absolutely horrible. He actually decided to fail me because he said he felt i needed to take his class again. What I did was I took it at U.C.S.D. where I was accepted. I got an a. Now more than 5 years later im at pharmacy school working on my pharmD. This man simply cant teach.
DO NOT take this course.. This is my second time taking this course with the same teacher. The first time I took the course I had no idea that there were so many requirements online(BC he nvr mentions it) and I failed! Even after getting As and Bs on all in class tests. He is rude to students and expects you to know EVERYTHING that he knows!
This is my second time taking this class with this teacher because I had no choice. Big mistake!!! Quite difficult with all his exercises and too much questions, you'll run out of time. He is not helpful at all and I suggest take someone else if you want to pass Chem. Read all the ratings on him, pretty much sums up what he is. GL!
I got an A in this course but the Professor is awful. It was my only class and I wasn't working and I still spent about 15 hours a week studying ( I took his class online). Even if you have the time I wouldn't take this class, he is very disorganized and takes forever to respond to questions. Take any other professor but Gergens
He's actually a good lecturer. He explains things well. He gave us a sample midterm and a sample final both of which were extremely helpful. He didn't give homework. Watch his pod casts and read his Power Points to do well. Also his supplemental lecture packet will help too. I took him Spring '08.
i love this teacher. he is very easy, and he will not move on to another topic unless everyone understand. just ask questions if u dont understand and he will be happy to help u.
DO NOT take this professor. He is absolutely insane when it comes to homework, quizzes, etc. You should only take this professor if you have no other choice. REALLY HARD GRADER.
Do not take his class. The worst of all professors I have ever seen in my life. He does not have time for anything. He leaves the lab, comes late, and is not organized. Whatever bad adjective that you know matches with this guy. He gives you stress. He is here to disgust people from all science subjects not to teach them anything.
Not an easy class, but me and the other students who took him for Chem 231 were better prepared(got better grades) in Chem 233. Many young students had personality conflicts with him. Does not grade and return material quickly. Was worried about taking him because of this website, but I learned a lot
I would not recommend taking Gergens unless you have a lot of spare time on your hands and want to study a lot. Like other people said, he is pretty vague, condescending, and thinks he is God's gift to Chemistry. There are a lot of online quizzes, no hw, and his midterms and final were pretty difficult. Not recommended.
First off, I'm married to a 3rd year chemical biology/genetics PH.D student from SCRIPPS (#6 top chem program in U.S.). One online test 2 Post Docs, Hubby and I all got a 91%. And these people are doing top notch research and are published! I don't think he's even published. HE is unorganized, pompous, goes off on tangents, useless, ambiguous, etc.
He does seem like a teacher who knows his stuff. Just doesn't have a good lecture class.I feel like it's a waste of my time to go to class, because he just rambles on about things that are not related to the course work. The only reason I am passing this class is,because of all his pod-cast. If I wanted an online class I would have taken one.
It's funny that my review keeps getting flagged...I wonder who is doing that. Anyways, the negative comments on this site are completely accurate. He's a horrendous teacher...I'm thankful that I had some Chem background or I wouldn't have passed. It's now 2 weeks post semester and we still don't have our final grades...pretty sad.
He is really not that bad. If you keep up with the work and come prepared to class, then you will do fine. He knows what he's talking about and he will answer your questions if you just ask. he looks intimidating, but he's actually a good professor. If you are a slacker, then I wouldnt recomment him. Work hard and you will be rewarded!
He is really hard! Saw tests for other professors and they were much easier.
Most if not all of the people took his class not by choice but because they need to take Ochem and there are no other option. He's all over the place with all the handouts and lecture. He is a firm believer in more is better when it come to assignment even though lot of it is just paper pushing. He will try to imtimidate you if you let him.
You will learn a lot about chemistry. If you are not into Chemistry I wouldn't suggest taking him... he thinks chemistry is the most important thing in the world... other than economics of course. He will try and put his beliefs on you and can get pretty preachy. If you put the time in you can get an A. Just do what he asks
This site keeps removing my posting-very frustrating b/c I am telling the absolute truth about this teacher! This class was very hard to succeed in--he made it very difficult b/c he doesn't explain/teach well. You really have to teach yourself & use you tube. He tests on material he hasn't taught. He doesn't give straight answers to questions. Bad!
He explains the material really well.
Get to know him, you will do well in the lab. He gives out a lot of hands out that will help you eventually in masterning organic chemistry. He's the best teacher so far I've got in college.
He is AWESOME! He writes everything he says so take good notes, if you don't understand something in lecture ask him, he is more than willing to clarify. Make sure you read your book to be prepared for lecture and do your online assignments, he's pretty easy going and gives you everything you require to be successful in his class.
He readily prepares you for upper level Chemistry. Attend lecture for excellent notes and a clear understanding of the chapters. His quizzes and tests are fair if you take good notes in class, study them, and review online assignments. I highly recommend visiting him during office hours, he'll truly ensure that you understand the material.
Establish yourself EARLY as a hard-working student and life will be somewhat easier. Truth is, Gergens is a bully and does not create a comfortable atmosphere for learning. Despite this, I did feel more prepared next semester in lab. If possible, avoid. The torment was not worth the small difference in preparedness between me and other students.
I wish I could turn back time and not take this professor for online chem 100. The way he formats his schedule is so confusing I spend a lot of time figuring out WHAT to study. He sneaks 30 questions into one question (worth 30) right at the very end so if you run out of time you can guarantee a bad score. If I were you I'd reconsider taking him.
I couldn't agree more with the previous post. Gergens is inconsistent with scheduling, grading and testing, He is rude & condescending. He sets his students up for failure via test layouts and confusing lectures. He makes the subject far more complicated than it needs to be. He holds students to very high standards, but makes mistakes all the time
He is the worst teacher I had in 30 years. This was the first time I ever dropped a class. He makes EVERYTHING way more complicated than it needs to be. He does not know how to address people on a human level, I dont think this person should be teaching, he should dedicate his life to science.
Hard class, I got a tutor and studied a lot, and barely passed. He makes you watch tons of videos of him lecturing outside of class. Lots of online homework. Exams are hard, but the formulas in the study guide are just like the exams except he changes the numbers or element. I think he's a narrsaccist. I really didn't enjoy this class at all.
He is full of himself and will dock you on points for weird reasons. He's got a lot of pet peeves too. He's said come to class with thoughtful intent so many times, its annoying. This class is passable, just put up with his personality and you will be fine.
This Professor knows his stuff and can give a student who wants to learn Chemistry deep knowledge on the subject. He will help train your mind to be a good chemist, but you will work for the grade. He is very passionate about the subject and his strictness in grading helps the student to pay attention to detail and properly analyze data.
His lectures will not prepare you well for his exams and he bullies and is narcissistic... but the things he drills into your head WILL stick. Taking his class before the MCAT was useful because he teaches conceptualization of O-chem as opposed to rote memorization. That being said, take if you want to drill concepts; don't if you just need an A
He is a very laid back, funny guy. if you take lab with him, he STRICTLY uses blackboard so you watch videos online before lab and take the quizzes/test/final online and open notes. in lab, he's sometimes clear about what's expected but make sure you got a smart partner. sometimes when you ask for help, he's sarcastic
Yes,O Chem is hard, but this guy makes this subject nearly impossible. Has been teaching so long that he has hundreds of videos you will be watching outside of class & packet after packet you need to print out and do. Makes subject way more difficult than it needs to be. Overwhelming. Docks LOTS points for tiny things. Refuses to answer questions
Be warned there will be tons of busy work and videos. For homework, you will usually have to watch some videos for a secret code and fill out a packet. Gergens knows his Chemistry but his teaching methods seem outdated. He takes off points for the smallest errors, but some of his exams were online. Wouldn't recommend unless there was no one else.
awful!
Awful!!!! He is condescending. Not one thing in his disorganized lectures have helped in ANY assignments. He just expects you to know everything he does about chem - can't bring it down to a intro to chem level. Told me that I shouldn't require tutoring if I read the chapter and that he wouldn't provide any extra help. Avoid at all costs!
Lots of video work the video resolution is really low and half the time I can''t make out what''s in the video because it is so blurry. This professor really knows his stuff but sucks at teaching it. Really harsh on grading while he barely teaches. Would not recommend.
He touts "accuracy and precision" in everything students do, yet his website and handouts are rife with grammatical errors and misspelled words. He goes on tangents rather than teaches. If you ask him a question he will direct you to one of the hundreds of poor resolution, poor audio quality videos he made 10 years ago. Take someone else.
This class was impossible. He is the most terrible instructor I have ever had. WARNING - this class is 90% online work!! All assignments, tests, and handouts are online. He barely does anything in class!! Instead of giving us a good lecture and notes, he makes us watch his videos which are choppy and hard to hear. If you ask me, he's just lazy!
I took the on line class with him, and the lab with a different teacher at Miramar. He referred back to the lab manual on one test (different manual at Miramar College) and I lost 38 pts, also secret word on other 2 tests did not appear and I lost 20pts. He does not respond to emails (5 e-mails) at all. The amount of links will make you dizzy.
Gergens is a terrible teacher. Amount of online assignments were insane. Always so unclear. Our final was an 8 page long test given 1 hour and 30 min. Students stormed out the room. I got the highest grade in class on midterm and completed every online assignment with mostly A's and STILL got a B. If you MUST take him be ready for a LOT of work
I took this class online &it was A LOT of work! There were quizzes for every single chapter we covered & I don't even remember how many tests we took! The final is comprehensive and sucked :( and he is bad at responding to emails, but he knows Chemistry well and makes very good videos to help you understand the material as well!
has horribly vague assignments, relies heavily on his "website" which he boasts about constantly. His website is riddled with broken links, false links to invalid calendars of assignment due dates. Will spend majority of class time going on tangents and not covering material adequately. However, when he does teach you generally get it.
spends far too much time lecturing and on tangents. likes the sound of his own voice. does answer questions well though. Treats the class as if it's taken by highschool students and treats the students as if they are high school students as well. Uses a website which is hard to navigate and even worse to read, but does have helpful videos.
Gergens overall is a good professor, he will explain something if it doesn't make sense. He does tend to be a bit condescending but if you show him you care, he will help you out. He is super laid back for labs. Just don't show up late and don't interrupt him during lectures.
Dr. Gergens is a great professor. I wish I had him for lecture as well. Chemistry has always been challenging for me and I understood everything he taught; he made it easy to understand. Super laid back, very knowledgeable. "It all comes down to Chemistry and Economics, or I would be out fishing right now." :D
Took Gergens for OChem Lab and the class had its ups and downs. What I didn't like is that he doesn't lecture much about the lab. He had videos on his website that would go into detail about each lab and if you didn't watch these videos, you'd be lost on lab day. You learn a lot here, but the grade probably won't reflect that.
He is one of the worst teachers I've had in my 3 years in college. He is very obnoxious and does not seem to really care about how his students do in the class. If you do take his class, I would recommend learning the mnemonic devices he recites in class because they will be on the test. Overall, I would not recommend him.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. I am an A student, I'm used to working hard for my grade. He doesn't follow his syllabus, he hands back graded work weeks after you've turned it in. He is pompous and rude! Don't even try to ask him questions in class, he'll make you feel like an idiot. He says one thing and does the other. Dissapointing.
91 Rating with 2.5 GPA that explains something is not right
OCHEM is hard so you need to watch his videos and take good notes on his lectures. His lectures are awesome, everything you need to know for a good grade are there. Visit him in office hours. He is super helpful and is willing to work with you. Because of him I had an easy time in OCHEM II. He had good mnemonic devices to help you with the basics.
Belittlement is real with this one. You want to know what it feels like to be stupid step right up hes got you covered. His online formatt is ridiculously unclear and gets defensive when you tell him this. You can do anything ahead of time. Literally was 1 or more assignments due daily. I do NOT recommend him. I pity those forced to take him.
He grades fairly but inconsistent. Some online quizzes dont allow the test taker to revisit questions. The online schedule is very confusing with broken links. Assignments and HW due dates change. Cant do HW or study in advance. The class is overly stressful and challenging. It does help prepare you for CHEM 233 but is not worth it in my opinion.
Taking Chem online was great because I don't have a lot of spare time. That being said, you have to work your butt off in this class. It's stressful and a bit all over the place. If you are organized, u will be okay. There are tons of tests and HW and they are HARD. Be prepared to work for your grade, but it's over in 8 weeks so that's a positive.
The worst teacher you would see in your academic career, he does not want to teach at all, he makes fun of students who ask questions, he keeps asking students to drop his class for no reason . Everything is disorganized in his class, if you can not teach yourself Or not used to it, you would fail for sure
Terrible instructor, he does not do anything in the class, he will ask you to watch his videos from 2006, which have a bad quality and not really helpful to do his assignment online, take different professor if you really want to learn anything
he is brilliant , not in chemistry but in bragging about himself. Take a different Professor because he thinks you could learn organic through his online videos.
AVOID ONLINE CLASS AT ALL COSTS! Disorganized course content, due dates don't correspond to syllabus, tests are often available for 48 hours or LESS and when it's gone, it's gone! Not helpful via email. Makes you watch poor quality videos made by himself with codewords like COUCH hidden in them. Seriously! Do not buy lecture packet, it's USELESS.
He will make you hate everything that is related to chemistry, very rude and disorganized , take different professor
this guy is out to ruin your GPA and your learning. he does not teach, he "teaches" through his websites and blackboard. Feels like an online class. avoid him if you can.
Organic chemistry is a hard class, but he makes is more complicated and harder to understand .
He makes organic harder than what it is supposed to be. He thinks he is teaching an online class
This instructor should never be allowed to teach any courses, he does not want his students to learn any information.
a lot of teachers seem to be convinced that making a fairly easy class unnecessarily impossible presents them as intelligent How can you turn a class that is solely dependent on memorization into torture? By being all over the place, unorganized, unrealistic.
Very disorganized, he makes organic chemistry unnecessarily hard
very disorganized, you will never know what chapter he is teaching because he does not have a syllabus or a schedule to follow. IF students ask him question during lecture, He will answer their questions, otherwise, he will talk about the same concept for the whole semester. His electronic calendar is very confusing. Do not take him
if you want to spend 50 hours every week just to study for his class, then take him. he assigns too much homework even though he does not cover all the material. He expects you to know everything about organic before you take his class. it is impossible to even get B in his class
I would definitely take him for lab because he has videos on his website about the set-up and he has sample reports too , he really makes lab pretty easy. However, I would not recommend him for lecture , because he does not know how to lecture and he does not want to talk about organic at all.
try to avoid this class as possible. Alot of homework, and every small simple mistake " such as date" will lose points. I had very bad experience and I don't want to you live that stress.
He thinks students take only his class during the semester. The amount of homework he assigns in unbelievable, you will work for hours and hours on your assignments just because he does not like to teach in class and he wants you to watch his poor quality videos from a decade ago. you will be stressed the whole semester if you take his class.
The only students who would not feel stressed and would get A in his class are the one who already know everything about organic. It is impossible to get A , plus you will not even have time to study because the amount of homework he assigns is unbelievable.
If you take his class, be ready to spend 50 hours just watching his poor quality videos because he does not like to lecture like any other traditional instructor
Please avoid taking his class, I have no idea why this instructor is still teaching a hard and important class like organic. Every time I ask him question about the materia, he refers me back to his old quality videos. If you want to understand organic, do not take his class because you will spend so many hours teaching your self the material
If you want to torture yourself and have diseases , then take his classes. There is no way some one could get A in his class. Plus, you need to teach yourself organic because he retired from 2004 and he does not like to teach anymore because he recorded his all lectures and he makes students watch them instead of teaching the concepts in class
One phrase you will hear it from him every time you ask him a question abou the material is go back and watch my videos because obviously do not like to teach any more
his one period labs rush you to the point where you feel you did not learn anything and there is emphasis on the speed on how you do the labs rather than the quality and at the end your grades suffer because you were trying to finish before his set time where he keeps reminding you he would deduct a lot of points if you do not finish on time.
very hard to pass the class with even a B not because you do not study but because he does not teach the material. He should list his class as an online class because he refers you to his videos all the time.
I should have dropped after the first week, organic chemistry is a hard class, but this instructor made it 10 times harder
I do not really recommend taking Organic chemistry with him. You need a peaceful and friendly professor to learn organic because it is not an easy class and you will to go to office hours all the time. With this instructor, you can not even ask a question without him mocking you in front of everyone. Not helpful in his office hours. Hard A
His tests are extremely hard. And he is very unhelpful. When you see him in his office hour, he acts like he does not care and when you ask for help, he tells you to figure it out on ur own. I've never had a professor like him all my college year. Regret taking him
I wonder how such a good school hire an instructor like him. During the laboratory, he sits on his chair for three hours without even asking his students if they need any help, and if you go and talk to him, he will say, " did not you watch my videos before you come to the lab" needless to say, his videos are poor quality videos.
He gives a lot of handouts which really make you understand the concepts. Two portions for his exams, out class and in class. The in class is very similar to the out class, so you could get As in his exams. He answers all your questions in the class. I do not recommend his labs. Almost 4 hours was spent writing a prelab . He is the nicest teacher.
One of the worst instructors I've taken in my life. Cares more about his syllabus than what he needs to lecture in the course. Puts in the minimum effort as a teacher, with everything being online and him being practically useless in lecture, but expects students to give everything like they are only taking his class. Feels like a 6-7 unit course.
In the first half of the semester, I felt he did not care about his students, but on the second half, I could say he was a different person. Best lecturer I have taken in my whole life. Need to read the book and work on his handouts to get A in the class. His exams are really easy. I would definitely take him for lecture. Partcipate a lot
This is not a normal organic class, you do not follow a certain structure but instead you learn methods on how things happen instead of why. Be ready to accept things. Definitely form a group to survive this class and always watch videos online. you practically will teach yourself O. Chem. While remembering his methods. you do not need his textbook
Please avoid this professor if you care about your future and also your GPA. He does not teach at all in the lecture, and you feel clueless because he has not taught anything. He says "We have already gone over this" even though he has not taught anything and goes off on tangents about seminars on soap dispensers !!! AVOID
Try to avoid his lab, it is just too much unnecessary work for easy experiments. If you ready to read the book and watch a lot of videos, then take his lecture. He does not lecture on everything but his handouts would help you to master the material. His handouts are really useful. He has office hours, but not helpful at all.
His handouts are helpful but he does not go over the concepts at all. So if you read the textbook and watch videos elsewhere, the exam should be fairly easy. However, you have to do a lot of learning on your own. He puts the minimum effort but expects maximum effort from his students. Do not ever take his lab, he will make you suffer.
When you're registering for classes and the department puts STAFF at the time of registration in place of the professor's name, that means you end up taking a course with this professor, who is by far the worst professor in the entire San Diego Mesa College Chemistry Department. Please avoid him as much as you can, he does not teach the material.
Instead of teaching Chemistry, this professor prefers to go on about mantras that are not helpful for exams. It feels like he should have been teaching an English class because he cares more about spelling words and handwriting more than actual lab coursework and calculations. Please avoid if you are a Chemistry major and you actually want to learn
What is the point of getting A in the class without learning any thing !!!! Exams are take home , everyone gets A,, students form study group, so it is easy to get As in the take home exams but the final inclass and is 32%.You will teach your self organic chemistry since day one. Do not take his class
If looking for a decent Organic Chemistry class, do not take this class. He adds assignments that were not part of the homeworks that were part of the "calendar" that he uses. This professor does not go over examples that could help us in assignments and tests. He tests you on things that were never taught to the students and is significantly hard
Chemistry online - the best thing since the creation of H2O! Chemistry is a hard subject, but Prof. Gergens class is great. He's respectful, and promptly replies to emails. The key to get a good grade is to be competent, and always look at blackboard when assignments are posted to check due dates. Most quizzes untimed, and exams are fair!
Hardest lab I have ever taken. It's so much unecessary work. Pre-labs take about 3 hours to do. He's very sassy through email & always refers to his online calendar even when the directions aren't clear. He's a nice person, but a horrible professor. Very unorganized, barely gives back any graded work. Always makes us watch his boring videos.
If you take Prof Gergens class you will have to hurdle through video/online content of poor quality, a very hands off teaching method, confusing quizzes and tests. Personally I would not take this Professor again, as I had to spend more time navigating his maze of a course then focusing on the concepts of Chemistry.
If you do the work, prelab and take notes you can past the class. Most of the stuff is online such as prelab lab , quizzes and final exam. I think he grades pretty easy with not much effort needed.
Wastes time talking about ridiculous theories about life. Totally disorganized, instead of putting directions in one place he scatters links all over his messy blackboard page to make things as difficult as possible. He makes simple concepts complicated, he is obtuse on purpose.
Omg currently sitting in his class. HE JUST MAKES SAYINGS TO REMEMBER THINGS. DOES NOT TEACH. Gave a functional group test the second day of class using his own dumb hand gestures. EVEN THOUGH FUNCTIONAL GROUPS ARE IN CHAPTER 3.
One of the worst professor I have taken in my life. He does not teach, but he likes to assign a lot of homework that he has not explained. if you have to take him, try to read the book and watch a lot videos.
I have never actually put anything up on this site before because honestly I have never had too. However, this man has changed that. Please do not make the same mistake that I did by taking him. If you have other options please by all means go with the other options and save your G.P.A. This professor does not care about your well being! Run
OMG It's finals week right now, I thought we were clear and CHEM 100L is done. Out of nowhere without warning us, preparing us, or even giving us a study guide, He just gave us a surprise timed final exam. By all means even when you're desperate for a lab class like I was, don't take him, i'm a straight A student and is struggling with him.
Just the facts: For lecture he just scribbles on blank paper. Changed due date of assignment w/o warning One assignment was 8 hrs of videos Doesn't follow the book Tests on material not covered 1st MT- 15 pgs, took all S-break 2nd MT- 11 pgs Gave us extra hw halfway through weekend, due Mon EC on final was about a card game A's in all other classes
Exams are not relevant, they cover information not reviewed in class at all. They are online and timed, with not enough time to finish. The professor wastes time in class off topic. Online HW is hours of 10-20 y/o videos, another waste of time. Second half of semester was totally disorganized. The schedule is ever changing, even up to the day of.
His format is pretty different than most chemistry classes, but its not necessarily a bad thing. He explains material in metaphors that will might reinforce your understanding if you know it like how a textbook would teach it. He also gives plenty of real world applications. Homework is no more or less than any upper level lab course (alot).
Do not take this professor. He makes you watch a pointless hour long video on top of doing an assignment that takes another hour before you even do the lab manual assignment. His assignments are pointless, repetitive, and a waste of time. His website is also difficult to navigate, too many links. Do yourself a favor and pick another professor.
Never responds to emails and expects you to just know everything and how to do everything the way he wants
I had Professor Gergens for my Chem100L (different instructor for Lecture) and let me just say, I have NEVER worked so hard for an A in my life. Get ready to spend hours and hours for each homework assignment. Overall, extremely nice guy, available for help when needed - but just be forewarned, dont take if you arent prepared to work for it.
Where do I even start. My Dear LORD if you want to save your GPA and your inspiration, I suggest you do take another professor. Gergens does not care about his students, and he will guide you to nothing but misery. Take it from someone who took him for Chem231, don't waste your time with this professor, I literally want to quit school.
From the beginning of the semester he started giving an absurd number of assignments due on blackboard. By absurd I mean about literally 25 assignments that he had never taught us anything about. He has these weird videos with hidden key words that he forces us to see even though we have a lab manual to read everything. AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!
Currenlty taking Dr. Gergens class, chem231L. He makes us memorize functional groups by using his hand gestures and MANTRAS for "success in his class." The only way to be successful in this class is if he's not teaching it.
My first impression of his was wow this man is so narcissistic. And I was right. He sets his students up to fail. He is unethical with regards to grading and immoral how he treats his students. Take a look at his syllabus website for yourself for the amount of work this class is Google: dgergens chem231 mesa. IT'S REDIC
He is loves the sound of his own voice, so talks to waste time. So unorganized has three sets of different directions: one on his youtube page which is mandatory to watch, second set of directions is on the lab manual which he created and third is on this blackboard page. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! O chem is hard in general but he makes it x10 harder
If you are comfortable with a rambling professor with uninteresting stories, take this class. I can't believe the amount of time he wastes for 1 credit of lab. He makes you write out lab procedures! The videos he makes you watch are boring and get ready for 15 second pauses when they aren't necessary. Did I mention the 12 page syllabus?
This is the second semester I've had this professor. Luckily I only have him for lab section this semester but he is still just as awful. DO NOT pick him as your professor. He is the WORST professor I've ever had. Don't bother asking him for help, he'll just talk to you like you're stupid. Makes you watch hours of youtube videos of himself talking.
This teacher has inspired me to really demonstrate what it means to push flaws inabilities and short comings on to a teacher. I cant wait to see what will happen next in his teaching career!
Work hard study a lot and watch all videos he provides. The text book is a life saver! Stay organized because he gives out numerous handouts and worksheets that will help for the final. Exams are free form and some are even take home. He is super unorganized so stay on top of assignments and go to office hours/ participate in class and Youll pass
He provides many different resources for learning but most are on the very basic level and then he will test on 10x more advanced rxns and problem sets. The course in general is difficult no matter what professor, all memorization and super frustrating labs that will make you want to jump off a bridge. Expect to be in a constant state of confusion
The absolute worst professor! He's unfair, doesn't really care if you pass, and he assumes that you know everything on the tests and quizzes. I'm literally border line failing. Please avoid this professor. I had no choice but to take him since he was a last resort.
I was a straight A student before taking this class and I really hate saying negative things about anyone. But, do not select him for your teacher if you care about learning or your grade. His assignments are tedious and in no way prepare you for your actual chem lecture. He was the worst teacher I have ever had.
If you need to take chem and there is no one other than professor gergens? Wait another semester. He is disorganized, condescending, narcissistic, and a waste of your time. You aren't learning from him, you are using Google and the back of your book. He does not teach, he posts old iPod videos and papers with scribbles. In lab he rambles & insults
Dr. Gergens is an awesome professor who goes the extra mile to ensure the success of his students. He provides resources and videos that take up his personal time that he does not need to do. Chemistry is hard so naturally his course his hard. But if you study, work hard, and don't complain about the hard work then you'll pass with an A.
He's misunderstood. First half is prep work heavy going into lab. Second half of the course you realize why the first half was hard, since ochem builds on itself. Put in the effort outside of class, you will learn a lot by taking him. Provides ample online resources to learn the content on your own. Earned my respect as a professor. Chill dude.
He literally dropped me the last day we were able to add any other classes, so here I am, last minute trying to find a replacement. He gives lots of confusing work.
Confusing website. Videos are unhelpful and low quality. Does not guide you during lab so it gets pretty overwhelming because he expects you to know what to do. It can be discouraging, so stay strong. I did not find it challenging I found it uninspiring. The comments here are useful but I wanted to give it a chance; it was a mistake.
Extreme amounts of homework, he does not care if you pass or not and is a extremely tough grader. Sadly I had to take him and out of all the classes I've taken in my college years, he has been the worst and hardest teacher I've ever had.
He is just misunderstood and people like to try to do the bare minimum to pass. If you apply yourself and ask questions, you will get an A. There are several opportunities for bonus points and extra credit. The labs are time consuming, bust easy. He shows up an hour before lectures to offer additional help and can be easily reached via email.
Gergens is not for everyone. If you think the ochem series is mastered by hardly showing up to class or not paying attention or not ask questions. Science is not for you. Gergens is kooky but his lectures are slow enough to understand the material which is nice. He is very unorganized but he is willing to make sure you understand.
He's a cool guy but he made this class ridiculously harder than it needs to be. Does the bare minimum and it's like you are on your own. Disorganized and doesn't give definitive due dates on assignments. Ask him a question and he makes you feel stupid for asking. Overall, pretty discouraging class but possible A. Pro: midterm and final are online.
Decent for lecture. Kinda boring but his handout worksheets are helpful. Gives out practice exams which are helpful. 3 exams, 1st is mainly review, 2nd is take-home, 3rd is the cumulative final. Don't buy his supplemental lecture packet (orange cover), never used it; waste of $17 dollars. Be organized and textbook was helpful but not really needed.
It really shows when a professor no longer enjoys his or her job. I definitely saw that from him. It is not worth taking this class. He was disrespectful and condescending. I thought it couldnt be that bad after reading the reviews, but I was disappointed. He leaves the room to make you watch old quality videos. He does not care about students.
YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN! He provides 12 minute youtube videos instead of interactive lectures (from 10 years ago). He shouldn't be paid if he is expecting us to teach ourselves. When you reach out to tell him you are struggling, all he does is ask if you are reading the text book. I received an A in this class because I taught myself 100%.
Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Gergens is a good professor. He is traditional and basic in his teaching. So if you're into animation/graphics, and powerpoints, etc.- he is not the professor for you. He mainly goes over worksheet/packets and writes out on paper to explain his examples. Teaches you HOW TO LEARN and gives strategic acronyms.
Professor Gergens is extremely available by email and will answer ALL of your questions. Organic chemistry isn't easy. The class was hard, and he doesn't hand you everything. But he tells you what to study, and gives practice tests so you'll know what to expect. Follow along in the textbook and do all the problems. Tough class. Great professor.
The worst professor I've ever had. If you are reading this DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH DWAYNE GERGENS. DO NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT! He should not be considered a teacher. He just directs you to videos and tells you to read. No lecture. No structure. He's Lazy. Doesn't show his face except from 20 years ago. Seriously-- do not take his course. #REGRET
This class on its own is not enjoyable unless you are specifically interested in chem and this prof makes it even less enjoyable. The contents of the class are hard to follow and the quizzes and tests are confusing and tedious. You can definitely get a decent grade if you want to put the time in, but if you can you should take a different class.
Mediocre. His class is "old fashioned" but not really in a good way. He does know chemistry, he answers questions, he gives extra credit out a lot, and he's friendly. However his grading is very slow and he makes mistakes a lot on Canvas. Whenever he grades he's nitpicky. Sometimes goes on tangents during class. I cannot recommend him.
I have taken university classes in the US and Tokyo, and CC classes in OR and CA, and my honest impression: he is burned out and unwilling to update his material from 30 years ago. Inconsistent expectations, contradictory class content, an incredible lack of attention to detail. Proud of his 70% class average. Worst teacher I've ever had, period.
Prepare to teach yourself everything. He uses his own material from the 90’s and is very confusing to follow when he teaches. I learned more from Kahn Academy than I did him. He mixes up class content and misspells a ton of important things like chemical names. He is friendly but thats not worth the stress of having to teach yourself.
This is a man who simply should not be teaching. He is a poor communicator and general conveyer of information. You will have to do the vast majority of work on your own as even when you come to him directly he never seems to understand how to teach Ochem subjects. His lab class is confusing and poorly laid out.
Do not take him! He does not teach, you have to learn everything on your own. His information is very outdated. He doesn't grade any assignments until very late in the semester.
Taking an online course in person is awesome. He teaches depending how he feels and the only thing really important is the lab day.
I did fairly well in chemistry both in high school and at a four year university but his class boggles my mind. He mostly goes on tangents when lecturing so be prepared to teach yourself the material. His tests are also probably really old so updated online info won't help on his tests. I'd suggest going with a different teacher if you can.
Do you like to take chemistry lectures from a sad man? A man whose only goal is to demonstrate that he is so much smarter than you? A man who never updates his teaching materials and frequently goes off-topic on boring tangents? A man who makes chemistry even more difficult than it needs to be? If so, Dwayne Gergens is your kind of 'professor'.
Dwayne's class is a challenge, but with the right approach it can be rewarding. Staying engaged, doing the readings, and using study tools like unstuck ai can really help. The workload is heavy, but if you put in the effort, you can succeed.
