Tough grader on the assignments but he provided me very with helpful feedback when grading them.
His journal clubs weren't my favorite, they are time consuming and he grades them hard. However, we did very poorly in one of them and he gave us a chance to edit it, resubmit it and improve our grade. He cares that we learn and do well, but you have to 100% work for it.
Dr. Roach was a good professor. He is very passionate about Medical Microbiology and wants his students to do well. He offers some extra credit for assignments or tests that you may not have done well on and participation is a must.
If you can't handle a high level of sarcasm, don't take him. He gives extra credit here and there, so make sure to participate during class. Don't try to learn all the information the night before the exam and put in the time for the assignments. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Not the most inspirational or enthusiastic during class, but the information is interesting and engaging. Not only learn but also understand the material, forward and backwards. Memorizing isn't gonna help.
Interesting class. Your grade is based on 4 non-cumulative exams and 4 or 5 journal club assignments (answer questions/create questions about a scientific article). The articles can be interesting but he grades pretty hard on abstracts and the questions you come up with. Tests are pretty easy if you take notes.
Exams are fair, journal clubs are hard and/or he grades them harshly. Good luck with getting a reply from him when you email him. If you need anything from him, its better to speak up during class (and I dont mean typing it on the Zoom chat).
Dr. Roach was a good professor. The material he presented was always very interesting and he did his best to make it relevant to what is currently happening in the world. Participating in class could earn you extra credit! Exams were tough but fair. Be prepared to put in a lot of time and effort to really understand the material.
This class was fun and lecture were Interesting and test were fair. Assignments a bit more difficult but get easier as course progresses. I took this class online and struggled to participate in discussion.
Professor Dwayne was great overall.
He is very straight forward with what he teaches but you need to study to do well on his tests. Not the minuscule details but the bigger picture concepts to do well because he continues to build on top and does not got back
This guy has a god complex. Sarcasm aside, in every single lecture he tells the class to "google this" so he doesn't have to because he can't be bothered. Also, in terms of tests, they are way more specific than the generality of his lectures. He emphasized in class to "get the big picture" however his tests are not designed this way at all.
Dr. Roach is super accessible outside of class and will help you with anything you are having trouble with. He makes lecture interesting and easy to sit through. Exams can be challenging so do not wait to study the day before.
He doesnt like answering questions that arent good. He gives a real chill dude vibe but in reality because of that hes vague in regards to his entire lecture. I checked my exam after wards by rewatching the lectures and going through the slides and a lot of the questions couldnt be answered. He seems friendly though.
He's a pretty good professor in contrast to the first half because he actually takes his time to talk in a normal manner and goes in depth with the material. He wants you to understand the bigger picture and the concepts rather than remembering all the little details. If you just watch his lectures and look over the lecture slides for tests, u b ok
Pretty good lecturer, however he covers a lot of material and doesn't narrow down what is going to be on his tests. Not having a study guide isnt the end of the world, but with so much material you have to prioritize, and its hard to know what to prioritize. Sometimes lectures are cut short so you have to learn the last 20% of the lecture yourself.
hes chill
Some lecturers may lecture as if there is no person inside, but he definitely will talk to you and lecture you as a real person who knows what they are talking about since he has a great amount of experience in the microbio field. His lecture slides have a small amount of content which is good because he doesn't bombard with information.
Dr. Roach is an awesome professor. His lectures are very clear and he tells you whats actually important to know and whats not. Attending in person lecture is very recommended.
He gives a lot of extra credit if you attend his lectures. He is also very understanding and caring.
Dr. Roach is a great lecturer and he encourages class engagement. There is no study guide for exams so you really have to narrow down on whats important. However he will mention certain things that you need to know for the exam during the lecture.
Very good teacher to take this class with.
His lectures focus on the bigger picture and are more conceptual. The tests are tough and don't come from the lecture slides. The averages on the tests are very low, but there is extra credit. Don't wait to study the day before.
Dr. Roache was overall a very good professor and I am taking him again in the Spring. Don't focus too much on specific/tiny details. Just make sure to understand the big picture and overall concepts. I learned a lot from his lectures and he keeps the material relevant and interesting!
overall, I think Dr. roach makes microbiology interesting and relevant. His pp slides are great and not hard to understand. The only thing you need to study is his pp in order to do well on the exam.
Honestly, terrible professor his test questions HAVE NOTHING to do with the material and then he basically told us we were dumb
I really enjoyed the way Dr. Roach lectures, especially because he is very thorough when going through topics. You will definitely need to go over the slides and understand the concepts on your own, but his tests are very fair. I wish his office hours had set times each week but he is good at communicating if you email him.
He is the best professor at SDSU , very calm and peaceful lecture , exam was fair.
Professor Roach is a good lecturer but when it comes to the exams the information seems to be 10x harder. He comes off as really chill but can be rude when asked questions.
He's a terrific lecturer, however, the test questions were 10 times harder than his lectures, and some of his questions weren't even on the slides.
He often says we've gone over x material but in reality, we haven't. Information seems straightforward in the lecture, but make sure you read the textbook or review his slides for the exams. Really chill and respectable professor, but often harsh on "dumb" questions. Makes you feel kinda bad about asking.
Hes nice and approachable. His exams are very difficult, you are going to have to do more than just study his lectures. There are no extra assignments that he assigns. Since barely anyone goes to lecture he will randomly give out extra credit. This class is treated as if this is the only class that matters.
Dr. Roach is a really good professor and his portion of the class was super interesting. I found that he was well spoken and he spent a good time on each topic to make sure we knew what he was talking about. Overall, I would 100% take him as a professor again.
Seems like a good guy outside of class but can be pretty condescending during lecture which makes it hard to learn/ is discouraging. Exams are rough but content is interesting
Took Dr. Roach the first semester back in person after covid. The course overall isn't that bad because half of the grade is from Lab. The content of course is difficult because it is an upper div bio class but Roach keeps things straightforward and forms his test questions from the slides but you have to understand the content to pass
I enjoyed Dr. Roach as a professor, the class became much more interesting and well organized once he began teaching the second half. He does emphasize discussion in lecture which can be helpful. Sometimes E.C. opportunity for showing up to lectures but they are very beneficial for his class anyway.
Dr. Roach keeps things interesting and makes it easy to pay attention in class; however, his exams are tricky and I found myself struggling a lot. He offers extra credit sometimes (not often) if you attend class. He replies to emails quickly and is always open to helping you.
When studying for the tests start at least two weeks in advance. The lab is a big portion of the grade so the lab reports and post lab questions are important. The second half could use more assignments to help study for the exams like the first half.
Roach is a big switch from Marina. It was tough to adjust to the exams because of how he words his questions. His questions are a lot more general and you need to know the overall picture of what he talked about in his lectures. Previous people told us that he was extremely easy but that was a lie.
Dr. Roach is a solid professor. The lectures are dense and will be on the exams. His questions are a bigger picture of what the lectures encompassed. I never read the book and did pretty good on the exams
Pretty good class. The material Roach teaches is a lot more interesting and you can use it for future stuff like medical school. He seems like hes willing to help, I just never asked. The exams were hard
Dr. Roach's class is tough. His exams really make you dig deep and you have to understand what is going on to do well. He doesn't really offer any assignments to help out your grade so prepare well for his exams and go to his office hours. Assignments done in lab make up half of your entire grade in class.
Dr. Roach is good at explaining things, and he takes the time to make sure students understand what is going on. However, tests are difficult to study for since he provides little to no references or assignments to help practice the material
Roach is very personable. He engages with the students during lecture. Hes very different from Marina and that shows in his tests.
Dwayne's attempts at giving students a sense of autonomy was misguided and resulted in grades/marks that were "the worst he has ever seen". Regardless, Dwayne is clearly knowledgeable on the subject, however his, unironically, microscopic approach to the subject neglects his emphasis on approaching microbiology from the larger picture.
His slides are very generic, however the tests are more specific. Really need to study outside the slides in order to understand the information for the tests.
Professor Roach is funny and cleaver. However you really need to study outside of the classes to earn a good grade on exams. His slides are helpful in learning but will not get you an A on the exams. Also come to class and participate! He gives out extra credits in class.
Hes not a bad professor hes just not a great one. Theres like two HWs and no quizzes so the exams are all you have. He doesnt create study guides and his exam questions arent super difficult but theyre unexpected when compared to his slideshows. I think if he created study guides or preexam quizzes he'd have much higher ratings.
Professor Roach was a great lecturer, but his exams were the total opposite of how simple the material seemed to be. Also does not give practice problems in order to help you get an idea of what he may ask.
He is ok. Lectures don't really help but his slides help for the tests.
Dr. Roach's section of this course is very test heavy. Outside of exams, I think there were an additional 1-2 assignments but that's it. His exams are tough so do not study the day before, you will not do well. He offers extra credit sometimes to the students that attend class.
Very calm class, talks clearly and at a good pace. All exam material are in the slides but you really have to connect ideas to answer some right. He gives hints in the questions so don't get hung up if you don't know a species, or anything specific like that. Offers extra credit to students who go to class and explains well during office hours.
No assignments. Tests are majority of grade.
Dr. Roach is a good lecturer (calm, good pace). His exams go over what is on the lecture slides. You need to be able to connect the material and apply it rather than just regurgitating definitions. They are not something you can study for in one day. Assignments are sparse (1-2). Gives out extra credit if you attend lecture.
Good professor, makes class interesting. Lectures impt to go to, offers extra credit occasionally.
He only taught half the semester, but grade for that half is determined by 2 exams and only a few hw assignments. Lectures don't say much, he'll often tell you to look something up on your own time. Exams expect you to connect ideas, so harder than straight memorization. Offers some extra credit.
Go to his lecture, you might get some extra credit! Don't try to memorize all the details from the slides (didn't work for me), his exams are more of big pictures. Be careful reading the questions in the exams, they might be confusing and tricky. There are not many assignments/quizzes to improve your grade so try your best for the exams!
He records all the lectures, attendance is not required, but he gives extra points sometimes for coming to class. There are not many assignments, no quizzes, only exams. He doesn't offer study guides or practice exams so you will need to study from the slides. His exams are more about big picture, so don't try to memorize every detail.
Dr. Roach's lectures are interesting and it isn't hard to pay attention; however, his exams are really tough and I found it hard to do well based on how he taught/what he taught us. I found myself studying his lectures until I knew them by heart but still didn't do as well as I thought I would.
Dr. Roach's exams are tough so do not wait to study a couple days before. Lectures are recorded so attendance isn't mandatory but sometimes he gives extra credit if you do come to lecture. Course is very test heavy.
Dr. Roach is the second professor for bio 350 and is easily the better of the two. Fewer assignments but I found lecture more important. Moves neither slow nor fast but presents information in a reasonable and study-able way in my opinion
Dr. Roach wants you to do well so take advantage of his office hours. I found his section of the course to be more difficult than the first half and your grade is pretty much only based off of tests. attendance is not mandatory.
lectures are interesting but the exam can be tricky. Questions come from a huge pool so no ones tests are the same. Attendance is not mandatory and lectures are recorded. I found it hard to do well on exams even after studying for days. His section is very test heavy.
The grade is heavily based on exams but provides a lot of good information during lectures. However, there is a lot of self-learning and studying that needs to be done to do well on the exam. Exams are pretty difficult but manageable and not made to trick you. Also doesn't focus on the small details but on the bigger picture.
Roach is a good professor, but the majority of your grade is based on exams. He does not give study guides or any practice quizzes, you have to rely on his lecture slides and your notes. He is funny and his lectures are easy to follow, but you HAVE to study, study, study if you want higher than a C.
The tests are very conceptual. Memorizing the lectures does not help as you need to understand the information and be able to recognize differently worded questions. He does not give many homework assignments and almost no practice problems. Go to lecture, ask questions, use supplemental study tools.
His tests were decently unfair and not pertaining to the lecture slides. He did not post study guides and he did not guide us for the exams.
He tries to make his lectures engaging, and actually cares for students to succeed in the class. His tests are a combination of highly specific questions and tricky questions that seem easy at first. Paying attention to the details in his lecture might be best to prepare for the tests.
Roach is a good lecturer and keeps you engaged but his exams are hard. His portion of this course is pretty much only graded on tests so it can be stressful. offers extra credit sometimes if you go to class
roach has office hours where you can meet with him and discuss material or go over tests. His lectures are interesting but i found the tests are harder than marinas portion of this course. Dont rely on memorization .
you need to go to class to do well. His tests expand on prior knowledge but are fair questions. He's a pretty good lecturer but sometimes can go off an tangents when students ask questions.
Lectures were interesting and engaging, but he expects you to have a lot of previous knowledge to fully understand. Tests were online despite the class being in person. I would have preferred to taken these tests on paper.
You can tell this guy cares but it wont be easy to pass if you dont put in the work. The class is in person but all of our tests are on canvas. You definitely wont get by if you skip. But his lectures are pretty interesting so theres no reason to.
Great professor and lectures are interesting. Exams are so hard even if you study and watch lectures.
attendance is not mandatory because of covid but he wants to see students and have them participate in the class. exams are hard, he throws a hint-two in the question if you read it thoroughly Nhave solid microbiology background you will do fine otherwise no. didn't know how to take notes in his lecture so can't help w/ that. go to office hr
He lectures at a good pace and engages with the class. There is no study guide for exams, so make sure you understand his powerpoints well. Try to remember the big picture when it comes to answering exam questions.
Attendance is not mandatory but he gives our extra credit randomly if you attend. He teaches at a fair pace but it is a lot of information crammed into one lecture. Tests are pretty hard, there is no study guide. He's a better lecturer than Marina.
He makes the lecture a lot more interesting because he lectures at a much slower and easier face for students to follow along, Although the class is difficult, he asks questions in class and tries to get students to say what they believe is correct. Attendance is not mandatory because of covid but it definitely helps to attend in person.
Dr. Roach is a very interesting lecturer to teach, and doesn't overload the lectures with a ton of information. He's very straightforward with test questions and also prompts participation, making it seem less like a lecture. Overall he's a good teacher and a decent person.
go to lecture or watch the recorded ones, very important for exams which is the majority of your grade
Great professor. Very conceptual exams so don't memorize details but integrate ideas.
This is a heavy course so be prepared to spend a lot of time studying, especially the lecture slides.
Professor Roach held interesting lectures & was committed to making sure students understood the material. He offered some surprise extra credit for attending lectures. The tests were a bit difficult and mainly focused on the power points presented during lecture. Keep up with the material and attend lecture for potential extra credit.
his portion is very test heavy. Sometimes doesn't finish the powerpoints so you have to teach yourself the material. Tests are tough.
Dr. Roach is a good professor and he tries to be funny (sometimes his jokes dont stick lol). The exams are based on his lecture slides so make sure you go to lecture or watch the recordings. Sometimes he doesnt go into detail about some processes because time so you might want to look it up but he also doesnt ask super detailed questions on test
Would give random participation points based on attendance. Pretty chill but you need to pay attention to both what he says and whats written on the slides
Honestly one of the worst professors Ive taken during my college career. He absolutely does not care about his students. Half the final grade was supposed to come from assignments (he had none). Hell give a brief introduction about a topic, tell you to look it up on google to learn more & then test you on details he never discussed. DO NOT TAKE!!
Funny dude, lectures were engaging but tests were difficult. I studied a lot and it didn't help much at all. Hard to switch professors halfway through the semester especially given their completely different teaching styles.
Roach only teaches the second half of the class. He is a very engaging lecturer but does not verbally cover all of the material on the exam. Other sources besides the lecture material will be needed to study. Lectures are recorded and optional, however, he gave two surprise extra credit opportunities for those who were in class.
He is one of the best professor i had in Sdsu. Very knowledgeable and nice person. The exams are challenging and tricky. Study and follow the instructions you will be fine.
He's a very engaging lecturer and is funny, so it's easy to pay attention to a subject that can be less than thrilling. He only taught the send half of the class but he was definitely the easier professor. Not many assignments to do once he took over the class to boost your grade, but the lab assignments help and the lowest exam of 4 get dropped.
really cares about his students being up to date on medical micro world and tries to show how class is applicable outside of class. really great professor.
really great professor who cares about his students. exams are a hit tricky
This class was very informative and all exams were lecture based. Dr. Roach encourages you to participate in class lectures and provides office hours to go over exam grades. Exams were tough and requires outside of the box thinking
The information is very interesting and he tries to be engaging. You have to be prepared to memorize everything that is on the slides as anything on it is fair game. As long as you stay caught up and try to understand the concepts you should do pretty decent. He does take pride in being a difficult class and there aren't any curves!
Rewatch all applicable lectures before exam. Journal club is an opportunity for an easy A on an assignment worth an exam grade. I had a situation where I missed an exam for legit health reasons. He was very understanding and accommodating.
This class is pretty laid back. It feels like one big discussion with open communication between the class and the instructor. The exams are surprisingly hard, do not just memorize the material but really know what is going on. The journal clubs are pretty easy and the topics chosen were very interesting. Attendance is a must!
Dr. Roach cares about his students and wants you to learn. His lectures are very helpful in learning the material. Exams were tough but I would recommend rewatching the lectures to target key things to study for.
Overall, this class was one of my favorites as I really enjoyed the material presented as well as the discussion part of the class. However, the tests were pretty difficult and I found you have to study and memorize not only the information on the lecture slides but also the information he talks about in lecture, so attendance is key to passing!
I thought this class was a great class and aptly challenging for being a 500-level course. The textbook that is assigned for this class was not used at all as all of the exam material comes from his lecture slides. The exams are tough, they require more out-of-the-box thinking than just memorizing the slides. Great lecturer!
Dr. Roach did a great job teaching this course. It is challenging but if you interact with the lectures then the material will make sense. Necessary to understand concepts as a whole rather than just memorization.
You must apply yourself to this course. However Dr. Roach does make lectures interesting and ensures that you think about concepts as a whole. His feedback is helpful but you must be proactive about reaching out to him.
This class could be difficult at times but Dr. Roach does a good job of organizing the material. It is important to understand concepts and have a general knowledge rather than memorizing the slides. Dr. Roach does offer some extra credit so make sure to show up to class.
Dr. Roach is a laid back professor who loves microbiolgy and his career. However he can be lazy.
He is a good professor just beware the exams are hard but manageable if you put in the work. Highly recommend going to office hours to go over exams. Really helpful and will prepare you to take the next exam.
This information in this class was easy to understand, but the tests are an application of the material so you need to have a deep understanding. I loved Prof Roach and the set up of this class. He wants you to attend lectures, so participation matters. Also journal clubs are a big portion of the class and graded in detail. Not an easy A!
The lectures are very beneficial so show up to class. Tests are based on the lecture slides but make sure to listen to Dr. Roach because he does discuss other aspects that are not listed. Overall the course is very doable if you apply yourself in lecture.
Difficult exams, interesting lectures, and he takes forever to grade assignments. Overall great professor though.
Dr. Roach definitely teaches Medical Microbiology as a test and lecture-heavy course, meaning that the material and concepts are interrelatedly focused on one another. The questions on his exams need some thought, as the phrasing of the question plays a huge role in what is being asked. Students should make sure to ask questions and attend class.
Dr. Roach cares about his students' success.
Overall this class is doable if you put the effort. Your grade is based on a few assignments and mostly exams. Prof Roach makes the lectures very interesting and is always open to suggestions. His exams were pretty difficult and at times seemed unfair. Overall not a horrible class!
overall this class was not too difficult. Lectures are a must if you want to succeed. The exams very pretty difficult and heavily lecture based. Dr. Roach makes lectures really interesting and fun! Biggest con to this class is that it is test heavy and so if you don't do well on the exams you won't pass!
Only a few assignments so you have to do well on them. I'd say 4+ hours of studying each week on top going to the lectures will help you succeed.
Dr. Roach's tests can be tricky and after two semesters with him, I still don't quite know the appropriate way to approach his exams. Be ready to study hard, focus on overall concepts, and attend office hours!
Journal clubs are very interesting, especially discussions about methodology and study designs. Exams are difficult with some questions focusing on little details in the lecture, but some questions are straightforward and are directly from the lecture. Lots of questions require logical thinking and application of knowledge
exams were tough and tricky. although the lectures were interesting, they were slow at some times. dr roach is a cool guy, pretty fair, and respectful. made me feel more aware of my surroundings. overall good class, do recommend taking it.
This class if very lecture heavy, I suggest really focusing on what he says during the lecture versus what is on the slides. Overall, the class material is very interesting and his lectures are engaging. Do not study for this class last minute because it is a lot of material to cover. He is also a slower grader, so expect to wait for grades.
I've taken Dr. Roach for Bio 350 and 584, and his tests are difficult, but I can say that I've learned a lot. You need to understand overarching concepts instead of just memorizing facts for his exams. The class can be difficult and stressful at times, but I can definitely understand and critique research papers a lot better now.
Class is grades by 3 exams and 3 journal clubs. Does not require a textbook. Tests are based solely on lectures. Gives a little extra credit at the very end of the semester. Attendance is mandatory and if less than 60% of the class does not show, he will deduct points. Records his lectures but if people don't show, he will wait to post them.
The class is not hard, he does a great job in making things clear and everything he teaches is not hard to follow, by far my favorite class this semester
This was one of my favorite courses. Attendance definitely matters & tests were lecture heavy. As long as you study & participate you will be fine. Dr.Roach is a great professor so he makes the class more interesting
Dr. Roach is a great professor and did a great job explaining & teaching the material. Attendance definitely matters and he docks the entire class if less than 60% of people show up. Tests were difficult & very conceptual so you need to really understand the material and not just memorize things when studying. Regardless, very interesting course.
Dr. Roach organizes the material for Med Micro really well, and the material is interesting to learn about. Tests are quite difficult, even with understanding of all concepts discussed in lecture. You will need to study materials outside of just the lecture slides to do well, and even then, some questions are ambiguous.
This was an extremely interesting class, and Dr. Roach is a nice/funny professor. There is a lot of material to cover but the exams are very random and not a good indicator of what you actually know. You have to study what he actually says and not only off the lecture slides. 60% attendance is required or he docks points, but he just gave warnings
Terrible teacher. Boring lectures. Exams are totally random and all answer choices are literally identical but somehow only one is correct. Never replies to emails. Good luck.
Class (584) was bonkers. Lectures seem like they did not have much information and were easy enough to understand, but then exams had info that was never mentioned in class or questions were worded so poorly that people did badly.
Exams are more then regurgitation of info!
It was a difficult class, but very rewarding. You should do fairly well if you put in the work.
Tough grader but interesting lectures
Tests were pretty difficult as it requires more than just memorization, but lectures were very informative and I enjoyed the journal clubs.
Dr. Roach is really nice and this class is interesting, however the tests can be tricky. Put in the work and you should do okay. Journal clubs are also graded toughly.
Confusing class lectures leading to even more confusing exams, I was saved by previous bio and microbiology knowledge
Exams are very detailed & more in-depth than the lectures themselves which made exams tough. Does not really give guidance as to what is on the exam & believes everything is important. Also I get the intent behind journal clubs but I would say it is a bit unfair as he does not cover it too much in class and it take a lot of time away from studying.
Interesting lectures but exams are tough.
Dr. Roach teaches this course well. His tests are based on the lecture slides but it is important to understand the material as a whole. It is a 500 level course so expect to put work in and attend lectures
Dr. Roach did a great job teaching this class. He ensures that the students understand the themes of the course and gives good feedback for improvement. Make sure to be proactive about learning the material
Pay attention in class. Lectures are important to do well on the tests. Dr roach can be helpful when you reach out to him
Class was lecture based and tests were difficult at times. Spend time learning the concepts rather than just pure memorization.
Dr. Roach's lectures were interesting, the material was engaging and he knows his stuff. Your overall grade is based on 3 exams and 3 journal clubs. I felt his grading of the journal clubs could be inconsistent and he took off points for some things but not others that were similar.
The class gets graded based on 3 exams and 3 journal clubs. 25 of the journal club points come from just showing up to class, but he takes forever to grade them. The exams are really difficult no matter how much you study
Professor Roach has a very straightforward structure for his class which helps you when you're learning and studying for the material. His lectures are very informative so I would suggest attending lectures. The exams felt fair if you studied on the material that he focused on. Journal clubs are important if you are trying to get into research.
The class as a whole wasn't extremely difficult. There are 3 main test and if you attend lecture and study you should do pretty good.
Need to pay attention and take notes to do well in this class. Going to class helps as recorded lectures are not posted until right before the exam, and he gives extra credit in class. Make sure to study your notes for the exam -- not overly difficult; fairly standard for an upper division biology class
The course was difficult. He did not make it easier, he knows what he wants to teach, but you don't know what he wants you to learn specifically. He won't baby you but he at least he doesn't make the course harder for the sake of it being hard. His exams make you think you're taking the wrong class. The questions look easy but they're not.
This is my second course with him and I struggle with his teaching style. Lectures can be disorganized, his expectations for assignments lack clarity, and exams are designed to trick you. He will offer a few points extra credit for participation throughout the semester. His research is interesting and exciting, but teaching is not his niche
Very straight forward and fair. The material can be dense, avoid memorizing every detail on his slides. I recommend getting involved in lecture discussions bc he makes it very clear what will be on the exams. Plenty of EC if you go to class, 2 easyish assignments worth ~40% of your grade. If you hate chatty classes or sarcasm dont take this class!
His teaching style is very different. Not your standard professor reading off PPT slides. Class is more relevant to hot topic diseases/microbio discussion and probes you to think. Exams aren't always like lectures, altho Q's are straightforward, & more studying on your own is needed. Offers EC, friendly/funny, but the class is hard as expected.
Attendance is not mandatory but come to class if you want extra credits (3-5 points). He doesn't read off the slides, and his slides don't have much information, so takes notes during lectures. His exam questions seem easy, but most of them are traps, so be careful reading the question, then think deeply, and CRITICALLY, and DON'T RUSH through it!
This class covers a lot of material so be ready to spend a lot of time outside of class to make study guides and prepare for the exam. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you might give up extra credit and participation points if you skip. Skip the textbook all together. Just study the lecture slides and take notes on what is said during lecture.
No group projects or lots of homework. Lectures are really interesting, but packed with a lot of info. No open office hours, just by appointment. Grade is focused on 3 big exams which is pretty standard. Overall he does want you to succeed and will sprinkle in some extra credit. I like how the class is one big conversation vs a long lecture.
Lectures were the best part of class, it was fun, engaging, and made you do a lot of thinking. Dr. Roach provides everybody multiple opportunities to get extra credit. Lectures are important to attend and participate in because exams are heavily dependent on them with the addition that his exams are difficult.
The bulk of your grade in this course is based on three exams. The lectures for this course are very engaging (no reading off slides) and class participation/discussed is encouraged. The exams are difficult because they require you to think critically. EC opportunities are offered so be sure to go to class! Office hours by appt!
Your grade for the course mainly depends on three exams. The lectures are pretty interesting and the professor doesn't just read from the slides. The exams are tough since they require you to think critically, but there is extra credit. If you need to talk to the professor outside of class, you can schedule a meeting with them.
Dr. Roach is definitely passionate in what he does but that passion is not lecturing. Albeit he provides a constructive and thought-provoking environment in lecture, a lot of the content provided does not translate to the exams. Material covered in class covers microbiology topics but when exams come around, I find myself questioning...
Great professor just put in the work! Attend lecture!
The exams were fair. Although class is not mandatory, make sure to attend class because the exam questions are based on the lectures. And he also gives a lot of random extra credits in class which helps boost up grades. Take good notes during lectures and use that for the exams
Definitely go to his lectures, a lot of extra credit, and he does not read from the slides. Helps go through the logic of microbiology, way better than memorizing concepts.
584 is a challenging course, but Dr. Roach strives to make it fun and relevant. He likes to lead thought exercises on the pathogenesis of microbes and encourages conversations on infectious disease current events. To do well in this class attend lecture, engage in discussions, and schedule office hours to analyze your test taking strategies.
He is encourages discussion, asking questions, and not too heavy a lecturer. His exams can feel tricky, but not really. 3 exams, but everything covered in lecture. Two assignments but not bad reading with a question set. Advice would be read slides thoroughly and try to engage in class. I learned a great deal and actively enjoyed it. Recommend.
his name matches his personality
He is brilliant and he knows it. The exams set you up for failure. It is as intense as an open book exam, but there is no notes allowed. There is an occasional curve that helps people out. Make sure you fight for every single point from your lab. It is always the difference between an A- and B+.
Very clear and enjoyable lectures, Slides will go into details but he will make it clear which details he actually wants you to memorize/understand. Go to class, avoid heavy note taking and participate in the discussion (he offers plenty of extra credit).
The topics are difficult but Professor Roach does his best to get you to actually learn and understand the concepts instead of just memorizing. During his lectures he likes to try to strike up discussions and get us to make the bigger connections so the classes are more active learning than passive. If you want to learn biology, take this professor
Great professor overall! The lectures are in-depth and really require you to think critically. Definitely try to study for the exams as much as possible, as they will test more than just your basic knowledge of the subjects. Easy to schedule office hours and wants you to succeed. Show up to class as he offers lots of extra credit!
This course definitely contains a lot of material that requires a lot of studying however Dr. Roach is great at explaining difficult concepts which makes it possible to do great in this class. Attendance is not mandatory, however, he does offer a lot of extra credit through attendance and in class participation which also helps boost your grade.
Lecture slides are rather more general, best to come into class to understand concepts more in depth. Some extra credit in class participation given at random. Definitely more of an interactional class given the smaller amount of students, which is more interesting than just hearing the lecture slides being read through the entire time.
Professor Roach knows what he is talking about, he can come off as arrogant but makes the course easy to learn for such a difficult subject. Make sure you watch the lectures as that is what the exams are based off of. He also gives out extra credit when you attend class.
Professor Roach is interested in educating his students beyond just the basics of the subject matter. He cares about helping them learn and does a good job of engaging those who come to class, including offering extra credit to those who attend. The exams really test your understanding of topics and ability to connect concepts between lectures.
The professor knows what he is talking about and teaching but has difficulty conveying such. He tries to teach students through discussion, but many of his analogies and discussions in classes can confuse someone learning the content for the first time or someone who doesn't know how to connect it all together. Exams can be just as tricky.
I've taken both of his class (350 and 584). I like his lecturing stye: interactive and helps you connect the dots from the previous lectures. The test are tough if you only memorize things without any context. If you want an easy A class, this is not it. If you want to learn, this is it.
If you took BIOL350 with Dr. Roach and enjoyed it, then I definitely recommended taking this class with him! Majority of the concepts are similar to 350. This course takes some of the 350 content and goes deeper into the concepts. Dr. Roach is easy to contact for office hours and gives opportunities for extra credit (gotta show up to lecture tho).
I've taken both 350 and 584 with him and really enjoyed both classes with him! 584 is a really interesting class but is hard so make sure to ask questions if you don't understand. He is very generous with extra credit so make sure to show up to class. Tip for future students taking this: think of the overarching theme of the lecture!
Dr Roach is easy to understand and fun to listen to. His tests can be complicated but if you go to his office hours you can understand the style of his tests more and the types of questions he asks.
I took Dr. Roach for 350 as well as 584. I enjoyed 584 much more than 350 and he seemed to engage students more in this class with more thorough lectures. The class is graded heavily on exams that can be tricky, because he really tests students full understanding of topics. Come to class and you can be rewarded with some extra credit!
There are a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester so make sure you make it to most of the classes. The concepts for Medical Microbiology were not difficult, but Dr. Roach helps you cultivate a deep understanding with these simpler concepts, and demonstrates interconnection with the microbial world and us.
Lectures are discussion-based which gives you more of a chance to make connections to daily life/ clinical experience than a traditional lecture style. Course is graded test heavy which requires making connections between the lectures particularly even when not outwardly discussed in class. Not an easy A but definitely a great learning opportunity
Dr. Roach runs a straightforward class. It is challenging material, but he is clear about the information that will be tested on. Dives into research while focusing on overarching themes across different modules. Communicates if there is a deviation from the syllabus. Although lectures are recorded, go to class it is for your own benefit.
Dr. Roach's lectures are straightforward and aim to engage us in discussion to better understand the content. There are study guide assignments due before every exam, so be sure to take good notes throughout the lectures. The exams were not too difficult; the study guide assignments definitely helped a lot with exam preparation.
Dr.Roach cares if the students are understanding the material. He can be very sarcastic but if you can get past that he's actually pretty nice and helpful. He gives EC when you show up to class if he thinks too many people are absent. Also, on exams if people didn't do well on certain questions he will remove/give points back.
Dr. Roach is a great professor by helping his students understand the concepts of lecture beyond just memorization. Even though lectures are recorded showing up and being a part of the discussion really helps and might earn you some extra credit. Exams are a bit tricky but if you put the time in you'll do just fine.
His lectures were clear and straightforward. The course was mostly composed of 3 exams, 2 quizzes, 3 study guides, a 2-page paper, and sometimes extra credit for attendance. Overall, he's quite a good and chill professor.
Overall a solid lecturer and good class organization. Extra credit is available randomly if you attend in person. Exams weigh heavy on grade.
The lectures are straightforward and have common themes. Participate and ask questions because his answers are clear and connect concepts. This grade is mainly exam and quiz based but there are opportunities for extra credit, like attending random lecture days and a second attempt on exams.
One of the few professors I've ever had at SDSU that genuinely seemed to care about student outcomes. His lectures were straightforward, the material was easy to comprehend, and there was ample opportunity for extra credit.
Dr. Roach focuses more on how students would understand the concept of the topic, not the very specific terminologies. He makes the topics less complicated and uses fun analogies for better understanding. He prioritizes review sessions and does not give heavy workload, but expect to spend more time studying the lectures.
His lectures are fun, makes the concepts less difficult, and always welcomes questions. He likes class participation and only requires three study guides and one article summary paper. He explains topics in an easy and modern way for our better understanding.
Dr. Roach is a great professor. His lectures are very straight forward and ensures students have a clear understanding. The lectures are recorded but I recommend attending class as he randomly gives extra credit for attendance. It is a test heavy course so make sure to take good notes and pay attention to the materials he emphasized during lectures.
Loved this course, learned lots of topics that are applicable to my future and quite interesting. Extra credit is offered randomly throughout the semester to those who are present at lecture. Prof emphasizes understanding the patterns of microbio instead of memorizing everything. 3 exams, 2 quizzes, diy study guides (20pt ea) and a summary (100pts)
Dr Roach lectures in a very clear manner and makes it easy for students to understand the key points of each class. Come to class and you will be rewarded with extra credit possibly. The grade is largely based on 3 exams and a few quizzes. Make sure to read all questions thoroughly, they can be tricky if you rush through them.
you'll be fine if you study
This was an okay class. There was so much extra credit it's not even funny. The tests are very difficult though and even if you study the lectures you will not do well. Good luck tho!
Nice guy. Makes a hard course bearable
This is a difficult class, however, it is doable. Roach is willing to discuss any concerns and issues you have with an open mind if you meet during office hours. He is very generous with extra credit and doesn't overwhelm you with work. It will take work on your end. I didn't feel the textbook was heavily influenced, but it's a good support.
Great lecturer, provides very informative slide with plenty of information. Quiz and exams make up most of your grade and can be difficult. As long as you attend lecture and study slides, you will pass. He is also very willing to help outside of class with questions over email.
Dr. Roach is a good professor and gives good information. Make sure to rewatch lectures for the tests.
Dr. Roach is a straight forward, organized, and fair prof. The classes he teaches are hard, but he puts together every resource you need, and exams focused on lectures. 3 non-cumulative exams, 1 final project. Extra credit for random lecture attendance, I plan to take him again for medical microbio because he was put together and a good choice.
Dr. Roach is a very fair grader and straight forward teacher. He uses his lecture time wisely in order to get the big picture of the lessons to you, but does require you to look at the lectures more closely outside of class times to do well and understand the material on the exams.
Amazing prof!! Take micro with Roach
Solid class, most exam material can be found within the lecture and lecture slides. As long as you put in the work it's a manageable class.
This class was difficult. Tests were hard and even with a lot of studying you couldn't be prepared for what was on it. However, he offered lots of extra credit to make up for it in lectures so even though attendance isn't mandatory it was worth going. He was a nice professor though very engaging.
Solid class overall, as long as you stay knowledgeable of the lecture content you should be fine. Most of the exam material can be found within the lecture and lecture slides.
Great professor, exams are not bad if you study all the lecture material. So much extra credit was offered, take advantage of it.
Your lecture grade isn't held up by much. Three exams, around five quizzes, and a 100 point assignment close to the end of the semester. Extra credit is given randomly on lecture days, if you showed up; other extra credit opportunities were study guides. Overall, the class was average. Lab section is hard depending on how strict your TA is.
Gives extra credit for attendance, interesting lectures but semi-heavy material
Overall, the class is very fun and interesting for anyone interested in medicine in the future. Be prepared to put a lot of time into this class and lab and lecture are 50/50 in weight. Extra credit offered randomly for coming to class, but just come to class because it was genuinely interesting. Be prepared to take selfies!
Professor Roach is great at teaching, but the class is just hard. Definitely attend lecture to understand the material and get extra credit.
Great professor and class overall. Its a 50/50 grade split between lecture and lab. You definitely learn a lot but have to keep up with lecture material, do not fall behind or you won't be prepared for exams. Attend lecture, he gives out extra credit randomly which helped my grade a lottt, professors rarely ever do that!
Pretty good professor, the exams were just really hard. He does record his lectures, but you should go to class since he offers extra credit randomly. Both the lab and lecture required a lot of time and effort, so be prepared since your grade is based on the average of the two.
-He does offer a lot of extra-credit, but it can be sporadic throughout a term. Honestly, you do not need the textbook but try focusing more on re-watching his lectures until the material clicks with you--his quizzes ARE tough and a bit "unfair" at times....SO, take good notes from them on a weekly-basis and it will set you for success.
Professor Roach was a great lecturer and I definitely learned a lot from his class. Lectures were entertaining and he keeps the class engaged by asking questions. He also gives out extra credit at random for attending lectures. Exams were closed note closed book and pretty reasonable but required a lot of memorization.
Dr. Roach is a highly organized and fair professor who provides all the necessary resources for his course (challenging), with exams based on lectures and opportunities for extra credit through lecture attendance.
A good professor who goes over everything in lectures that are on the exam. Grading is clear, tests are medium difficulty. They're the usual biology exams that are tricky but enough study should get you through. There are extra credit opportunities by attending certain lectures. Overall good.
The lecture component of 350 is very dense and heavy material, however with that said Dr. Roach was a very understanding professor who knows this is a hard class. Gives extra credit in class (must be present!!). Caring and seems like a genuine guy. If i could do it again, I'd make sure to dedicate more time than you think for this class.
Attendance not mandatory but he gives extra credit randomly for those that show up. Grades consists of three exams, no cumulative final, 5 quizzes and a 100 point project. Test are kinda difficult and mainly over lecture material, but the book does help. He is very knowledgeable, explains things very well, and hes hilarious. I learned a lot.
Microbiology with Dr. Roach is pretty good! The exams are a medium difficulty and based off the lectures, so reading the textbook isn't necessary. There's multiple opportunities for extra credit if you attend lecture. Overall I'd highly recommend taking this class with Dr Roach:)
This course is challenging and requires a lot of effort to do well, which Professor Roach is upfront about from the beginning. Attendance is not mandatory, but he gives quite a bit of sporadic extra credit if you are in lecture. Test heavy course and the tests are difficult. Grade split 50% lecture and 50% lab assignments.
He's a good lecturer but the exams are challenging.
Professor Roach is a great professor who teaches a tough class. Be prepared to put in a lot of time studying if you want a good grade. Textbook isn't necessarily mandatory but it helps. Go to lecture because he gives out a lot of attendance extra credit!
The class itself is difficult and requires a lot of dedicated time. Lectures are not "mandatory" but practically necessary to pass the class, so make sure you show up. Notes will be extensive and detailed, so be ready for that as well. The professor takes the class seriously, and he knows it's difficult so he does a lot to help you succeed.
He's a nice guy, keeps it real, respectable. Exams and quizzes are hard though and can be very specific in their questions.
This class overall is quite difficult and information heavy. Exams are closed book and pretty challenging. If you dont study you wont pass the class. He is a good professor and understands the class is difficult. Attendance isnt mandatory but he randomly gives extra credit during lecture so definitely show up.
For a 300 level, the class is more difficult than anticipated, primarily due to the lab portion. He assigns random extra credit and requires in-person quizzes. Very lecture-heavy and requires a lot of revision. Exams can be unfair because they're from question banks, and you may receive a greater number of questions from one module than the others.
Plan to work on this class almost everyday. Pros: helpful office hour feedback, engaging, lecturer, sporadic extra credit for attendance and study guides. Cons: slide deck & class overall can be organized better, condescending at times, TA grading is all over the place, lab is disorganized, not great at responding to emails
Despite some things i've heard, I actually very much enjoyed Professor Roach. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities that are easy, so take them. I never thought i would enjoy this course let alone get a good grade because i have never been interested in microbiology, but if you take the time to study and go to lectures, it is easily passable
Very content heavy course, requires you to memorize a lot of concepts. Mentally prepare for this course as it will definitely take a lot of time and effort to keep a decent grade in the class. Personally found this course to be harder than my 500 level biology classes. Occasional quizzes based on lecture content so be sure to review lecture slides.
I enjoyed Prof. Roach's lectures. He gives extra credit opportunities. Exams are a bit tough, based of lecture slides but very detailed. Very engaging lecturer. Definitely need to study to pass. Lab portion is A LOT of work, between, quizzes, notebook checks, assignments and lab reports. It's a fun lab but overall requires a lot of time and effort.
This professor is knowledgeable and engaging during lectures. I recommend office hours for those who want personal feedback on quizzes/exams. Overall, the course requires lots of self study on in depth material. The lectures are more supplemental. The labs can be difficult, but asking for help from TAs will go a long way!
Dr. Roach is a great professor who genuinely cares about his students' learning. He's clear and direct about what he expects in the class, making it easier to stay on track. He offers extra credit opportunities for attending lectures, basically easy points + benefits of lecture material. Overall, a solid professor.
Dr. Roach is a great professor who genuinely cares about his students' learning. He's very clear and direct about what he expects in the class, making it easier to stay on track. He offers extra credit opportunities for attending lectures. Read questions carefully.
Awesome Professor, I really enjoyed going to lectures, class was engaging. Expect to read lots and make sure you take really good notes. I recommend showing up to class and taking a bit of time after class to go over the material, it can definitely pile up on you. Overall, fun course!
Rewards students who engage/show up to class. Beware of tricky exam questions they're tough and studying matters. Class is straight forward and you can tell he really knows his stuff and cares about students. Stay on top of the material falling behind is hard to catch up. No homework but the lab is half the grade and takes ALL your time.
Tough class and tough material but he's very light hearted which makes the class more enjoyable. I found it hard to study for class because lab took a lot of my time. Quizzes, exams, one project, and lots of extra credit opportunities. It's worth going to class but all lectures are recorded.
Attendance was not mandatory but student who attended were rewarded with extra credit on occasion. Extra credit also given before exams upon completion of a study guide. A lot of information during lectures, but taught in an entertaining and engaging way. Studying for both lecture and lab takes up a huge chunk of time.
Really cool professor, lots of extra credit for simply showing up to class and participation. Class is 50/50 lecture and lab. Lab will take up a lot of your time (2 labs a week, pre lab quizzes each lab, 5 notebook checks, lab practical, 2 formal lab reports). Exams tough but fair (lecture heavy w/trick questions). 3 exams with one lec assignment.
Pretty decent professor for a Canadian ey! Lab was the hardest part, the TA was a tough grader. Lectures were always good, study the lecture + notes and you'll pass. I had a family emergency occur and was accommodated, very happy about that. Extra credit all over the place, very nice. Basically no hw, super thoughtful.
Listen closely to his lectures, as he makes it clear what specific concepts he wants us to understand for midterms. If you sit in the front he would like for you to participate. The wording on some questions in the midterms can be confusing but he offers extra credit just for showing up to lecture so it balances out mostly. Lab portion is rly fun.
Dr.Roach is awesome. Bio 350 it's so hard with lots of material to learn, but he is a really good professor with a great sense of humor; he cares about students and helps a lot. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. easy class if you study very well.
The class is tough but he offers extra credit.
Attendance isn't mandatory but extra credit is awarded often to the people in class. Outside of the classroom studying is required to do well on exams.
Great class, very informative. Exams are lecture heavy but very fair. Professor gives extra credit during lectures.
Class is split grade-wise 50/50 into a lecture and lab section. The lectures aren't mandatory and are recorded, but extra credit is sometimes given out. The tests are difficult and are solely based on the lectures presented. The lab is the hardest portion with some TAs being tougher graders than others.
He is a great professor, has very dry humor but his lectures are interesting. I am a student athlete that needed a lot of accommodating due to travel and away games but he was very helpful and willing to help me succeed. He was always available for test and quiz make ups and very open. I genuinely felt he wanted me to succeed in the class.
very nice guy, good lectures
Attendance isn't mandatory but he does sometimes give extra credit for attending. The tests are pretty difficult and it is helpful to read the textbook along with the lectures
Difficult tests with occasional extra credit for attending lecture.
The amount of material is reasonable to study for each test but some of the topics are difficult. Dr. Roach does a good job of stopping class to explain hard topics and assigns extra credit for those who show up. It is an interesting class just put in the time to study the slides before exams.
He is a good professor, he tries to explain the material as best as possible. The tests are exactly like his slides which is helpful. The class is just time consuming.
This professor really encourages engagement during lecture and while attendance is not graded, extra credit is based on attendance. He will make it very clear what material should be focused on as well as provide feedback on missed questions for the exams/quizzes.
I enjoyed his lectures, and he is a fun. I enjoyed his lectures
Attendance is not necessary but he randomly gives extra credit. He will spend 20 min talking about random things and then crams so much material in 30 min. His lectures are very straight forward but his exams are very difficult. Definitely rewatch his lectures and do all the extra credit he offers (bumps you a grade). Overall is a good professor!
Many extra credit opportunities especially if you attend lectures. The content is straightforward and easy to follow if you stick to the slides. Very knowledgeable about the content material. The lab section was the challenging part of the class.
The class is very well structured, at least the lecture is, I cannot say the same for the lab portion. Roach teaches the material very well, and extra credit is offered if you attend class. Course is definitely dense/hard
BIO350 with Professor Roach was a really tough class. It gets difficult if you don't go to lectures and don't study! The professor gives many extra credit opportunities and his lectures are very enjoyable. As long as you consistently go to lectures and study the slides and textbook, you can pass this class.
Professor Roach is a really nice guy, and he gives lectures really well. He is detail-oriented, so it is important to go to classes and pay attention. The tests are of medium difficulty.
Bio 350 is a difficult class cause it's material heavy. Dr. Roach teaches the class pretty straightforward and simple, which makes it easy to grasp. He offers extra credit depending on the lectures. Quizzes are distributed through the semester, so it's helpful to know the dates to prepare for them. The lab was more challenging than lecture.
This class is mostly based on test grades and is a challenging course. Attendance isn't mandatory but the prof will sometimes give extra credit for attending lectures.
Roach is a super knowledgeable professor and I enjoyed going to his lectures. Microbiology itself is a hard topic, but he makes it interesting and easier to understand. Go to lectures because they are great extra credit opportunities and you want every point you can get because the exams are very hard.
Class is doable, offers good amount of extra credit (mostly by attending his lectures,) if you study for a decent amount, you should be able to get a B in tests. He's not in charge of the lab portion of the class, but I'd say that was worse than lecture in every way.
Solid teacher, but a hard class.
Was a great lecturer and gave lots of extra credit.
Very detailed lectures that require at home review to fully grasp for the exams. Gives out deserved extra credit for participation and asking strong questions in class.
Dr. Roach wasn't a horrible professor. He offered extra credit for to students attending lectures as an incentive to go to class, he also offered extra credit when participating in class and getting answers correct. I would say my biggest complaint with the class was that his exams and quizzes were often not a true reflection of the lectures.
Dr Roach is a nice guy and his lectures can be entertaining but his exams and quizzes can be difficult. There's 3 exams each worth 50 points, a few quizzes 10 points each and 100 pt PowerPoint assignment. Easy to get an A if you show up since he randomly offers extra credit!
Not that many assignments that can be graded so your grade is heavily dependent on the exams. 4 quizzes and 1 PowerPoint assignment. He's knowledgeable and likes to involve the students during lectures.
Quizzes are a good perspective for what the exam is about. Overall, class was interesting and has great information that can be applicable after taking the class. Study Hard!
There is a ton of extra credit in this class that is sprinkled in when attending class with a "selfie" try to come to class every time so you don't miss out on helpful points. Lab is 50% of the grade so do well on both aspects. Good Luck!
Overall, class was fun and enjoyable to be apart of. There are guest lectures that are not taught by the main professor that are still apart of the exam so be diligent and attentive.
The professor is very well versed in what the content is being explained, this class is still a very difficult class that should have a high priority on your semester building process. Beware if you take it with another time consuming class.
How this class is set up is that there will be a clear distinction of A's and B's so beware and have that mindset before enrolling, this class is hard but it is very manageable if you do not have a heavy semester load. Be mindful.
Class was alright for what it represented, this helps anyone who is interested in medicine as some topics relate to fungal infections, bacterial infections, and characteristics of viral infections. Good luck!
This exams are not too bad but some may feel that the second exam was the hardest. The first and last exam was very manageable, so if you take this class, take into consideration of this fact and be prepared to study hard.
The professor was knowledgeable and explained concepts clearly, but their lectures could sometimes feel a bit dry or repetitive. While they were approachable during office hours, their feedback was not always as detailed as I would have liked.
Professor provided good resources and stuck closely to the curriculum, but the lectures often felt like they lacked a personal touch. The teaching style worked best for those who are independent learners.
Lab takes alot of your time and it depends on what type of TA you get which can determine a significant portion of the grade. Kind of have to gamble at that aspect but overall, class was cool.
Lab section has a lot of homework and is apart of the grading scale for the class so do not fall behind with the lab as well as the lecture portion of the class.
The project portion of the class is worth more than one exam so do not do that assignment lightly as it can also change your grade drastically, do not take any assignment given in this class lightly.
This class should be a number 1 priority in when studying and is hard to take if you are taking any other classes that are historically a "weeder course". Good luck you got this!
The professor will change a question if the question for exams/quizzes if it was weird or if many people did not get it, but do not rely on it as it is somewhat uncommon for it to occur.
Class is very interesting and it has a lot of validity for anyone interested in medicine. I think it helps for medical school conceptual knowledge but it is a difficult class.
This professor is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about microbiology, making complex topics easy to understand with clear explanations and engaging lectures. He is approachable and willing to help students with conceptual stuff
If I would put a spectrum for the difficulty out of 10, the class is like a solid 9. The class is doable to reach a grade you want, but you are going to have to fight for it. Good luck.
The professor is funny and it helps with engagement with the class, but it really depends on what topic is being taught at that day. Professor really like talking about his research (it pertains to the concepts) so it is a nice change of pace compared to concepts generalized.
Lab section, I believe TAs change over each semester so asking others for the best TAs doesn't really help, it is a real gamble, but doesn't hurt to ask others. Class will still take a lot of time in your semester so beware.
There is a good chunk of extra credit so come to class to get these points, they really help the overall score of your grade. Take your time and read each question carefully, sometimes the question has the answer in it. Good luck
Take this class with a grain of salt, it has quirks but this class is overall an experience you won't forget either it be good or bad. This class gives you grit. Good luck studying.
Class is full of character for sure, for example, the selfies for attendance before every test. This class takes a different approach to engagement in lectures.
The selfies was a new thing I did not see coming when entering this class. The class is mostly engaging and it has methods of really trying to get student collaboration with professor discussion in lecture.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives extra credit at lectures randomly. You must be present and take a selfie to receive the extra points. Make sure you follow the directions of assignments clearly and read the exam questions carefully. Be solid on the lecture material to succeed.
Mr. Roach was very inconsistent. His tests gave random questions, so you could study everything and only get questions from one section, or you could get really specific questions. Finally, he had a "Lab grade normalization" which basically means that he lowered lab grades just because there were multiple lab teachers for the class.
Professor would cram so much information in a short amount of time and should have been more clear about the end of the year project.
Tests are based off of question pools, so you may get tested on one very specific section and overall test difficulty will vary between each student depending on the questions they get. Professor admits that his test questions are intended to trip up students. Very hard to get in contact with. Overall very frustrating.
Engaging teacher who is a good lecturer, but tests are very inconsistent and focus on random details.
He uses a question bank for the exams and the exams are focused on really specific details that he hardly talks about in lecture. He tends to ramble about stuff that doesn't matter during lecture instead of focusing on the material that we will actually be tested on.
While his class is pretty challenging I found it a fun course. If there aren't a lot of people in lecture he'll do random extra credit selfies. He is a tough grader, so get ready to read a lot to keep up with this course. My only complaint is you can never see what you got wrong on the quiz grades so you have to go to office hours to find out.
He's a jacka*s is the best way possible. He'll try to be smart and witty whenever you try to make educated guesses, but it gets you actively thinking - could just be a tangent sometimes. The lecture was fairly easy with generous random extra credit. The lab component is HEAVY and requires so much time, your TA will make or break this. Solid class.
He's chill but I wouldn't take him again. The lectures were too vague or too packed. Sometimes he wasted time at the beginning of lectures. Exams were ok but had questions we glossed over in lecture. He bumped grades and gave extra credit. We didn't use the textbook and there's no homework.
He's a fair, realistic teacher compared to many of the other science professors in SDSU. His tests come from a large pool bank. You could either get easy questions or hard, it's luck. He goes on tangents a lot. Read the lectures for studying as he is vague when teaching. The lab portion is half your grade and is VERY time consuming and alot of work
His Microbiology really isn't that hard if you study even moderately. The grade is a nice mix of quizzes, exams, and assignments. There's lots of attendance extra credit. It's not hard. The problem is the content is very surface level and isn't explained remarkably well. It's hard to parse out what's pertinent test content and what's filler content
The material isn't hard, just study in increments instead of last minute as it is mostly memorizing the concepts. He gives a lot of extra credit and is very fair. Goes on tangents in lectures and his slides are condensed (most of the slide info wasn't on the test). Kinda vague in lecture but still one of the better sdsu teachers.
