What I have to say about this professor would not clear the censors. There are no clean words in the english language strong enough to describe how terrible his class is. He can't even give correct solutions to his own freaking problems!

The first week of his assignments are spent clarifying all his typos, grammatical innacuraccy, and general inability to actually say what he wants. His reference materials are not up to date and contain glaring errors. His sample/required code will crash.

Taught the class at much too high a level and assumed we were all Unix Gods who only needed a mild refresher. Skimmed over the material too quickly and gave assignments without explaining how to do them. Arrogant, egotistical. Avoid at all costs!

Inarticulate. Can't write clear assignments. Has a bad temper. Maybe a "great guy" outside class, but we're rating his teaching in class ... where he's useless.

He is a 1st class jacka**, his marking is ambigous. overall I'd avoid him if you can, b/c you might as well take the class as a correspondence course.

Class was qutie fun. This prof. puts a lot of emphasis on the real-world (employment). I go to school for the sake of learning, and so what if I don't get a job, it isn't the end of the world. This guy can't teach very well either, I don't think he understands half the**** himself.

He owes atleast 50% of his paycheck to google. the class consists of assignments, labs and lectures.. all of which have really nothing to do with each other. first assignment he spent half an hour each lecture changing it. in his class... sink or swim... get used to learning pearl, c and bash on your own..

Look, some here would have you believe that Dwight teaches with hard knocks, because that's how it is in the 'real world'. I'd quit if my boss was like Dwight. I did well in both his classes, he's still a terrible professor. You'd learn just as much finding assignments from other universities and using google to do them.

Dwight's assignments are awful and his attitude is even worse. He expects perfection from his poorly constructed assignments, and then does not mark and return assignments and exams in a timely fashion. He has 1 set of standards for students, and another for himself. I did dual-bach degrees, and he was the worst Prof. I had during that time.

Gives unspecific instructions while expecting specific results. Is quicker to blame 70 students for not getting something right than place even partial blame on himself for not being explicit enough.

If here allows 0 I would definitely give him 0. Terrible lecture, assignment itself not that bad, but he tried his best to make the extremely long hw even worse, forced you spend time on meaningless stuff. If you get 60 in your exam, you already did quite good. Avoid him and take any online OS course instead, you'll learn much better

I stopped going to class just before the midterm(skipped it), and dropped after I got A1 back; It took about 4 weeks from handin. His assignment specs are vague; beware of not handing in something he didn't ask for. Although I may not be the most credible source as I didn't stick the class out, know that taking 332 with Dwight is a huge workload.

Vague lecture style like he's talking to himself, very little written notes. Argumentative and dismissive on the forums, extremely unclear assignment specs which are graded EXTREMELY harsh, refuses to clarify details. Very hesitant to give exam marks to anything that isn't 100% correct. Expect to spend all week working to get over 50% in the class.

He is fine in lectures and in person but does not come across well on the forums. The assignments were incredibly long and vague. They had little to do with the lecture and test material, requiring you to commit a large amount of time to the assignments that does not at all translate into knowledge about the tests. Feels like taking two classes.

If your partner doesn't finish their part of the assignment he will tell you its your fault for not covering them. If something is corrected wrong on the midterm its your fault for not explaining it better. He is actually delusional and would rather be an ass on the forums then fix his content.

Don't take this class and any his lecture, just don't. If you want to learn OS, goes to other universities or study online. Any of them is better than Mr. Makaroff. And I don't think he is qualified for teaching in University. All the teaching material he posted on the blackboard are from online, hehe If you want to learn OS, don't come to UofS.

Absolutely the worst prof I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. Just recently took 50% of our mark for our most recent lab away for not changing the name of a directory from what HE GAVE IT TO US AS. In general, will never admit he is wrong, and is quicker to blame over half of the class for his mistake than admit he was unclear.

His lectures lack any sort of structure and he assumes you already know about the subject, which makes it difficult to follow along. His lectures are terrible. I would say you should just skip his lectures and read the textbook, but he probably knows that so he has quizzes on random days that count towards your participation mark.

He acts like students don't take any other classes except his. He's proud of the fact that students need to learn all the material on their own by reading multiple textbooks and spending 15+ hours per week doing labs and assignments that are intentionally unclear.

Only prof I have ever had where the class average was 56 and he still never curved anything. I didn't even know that was allowed.

Just terrrible. AVOID at all costs if you want your sanity. He completely refused to answer a student question in class. His replies to the discussion posts are unprofessional. He doesn't seem like he wants to teach the class at all. The assignments will take you forever and you'll be punished for ambiguous things that he didn't explain.

Unreasonable amount of work. Most people spend more time on this than our other 4 classes COMBINED. He is super unclear with what he is asking in the assignments and then takes off marks because you can't read his mind. Avoid this class if at all possible.

If I could give a 0, I would. I've had my fair share of bad professors but he is the worst professor I've ever had. He is rude and arrogant and expects students to be absolute masters and extremely quick thinkers. If you even pause to think, you will not have enough time to complete quizzes and exams. He makes a difficult class unbearable.

Absolutely insane that this man is still employed at the university. I've had my fair share of bad professors, but Dwight has been, by far, the worst. Need help with something? Dwight will just tell you to figure it out yourself. He makes exams very difficult and, for some reason, doesn't allow cheat sheets nor calculators..in a number heavy class.

The only professor I've met so far that will actively belittle you. He also babbles a lot during lectures.

Expects you to read his mind & very rude! Gives 0 for very unclear mistakes that he never mentioned in class anywhere in the whole course! Things as petty as your commits being longer than 80characters on git log, your pdf named differently, your submissions being bundled under a folder in tar, file permissions;you get a 0, 8%of your grade, gone!

Why is he so disconnected from students? He is at the level of condescension built from his ego of defeating students. Lectures are boring and he is constantly being corrected. Any wrong answers and he shatters you yet he has room for mistakes for himself?

This professor is the most unprofessional and condescending person I have ever met. Avoid him at all costs, his reputation from the past 20 years speaks for itself.

Does not want his students to succeed, confrontational and aggressive to students and faculty! He makes assignment instructions incomplete on purpose. The worst person in the department of computer science. SO disrespectful and makes the learning environment uncomfortable. If this is a required class you really cant avoid him. Good luck

Dwight Makaroff storms in, chaos in tow, Assignments a mess, directions? Who knows. Confusion reigns, you can't find your way, Trapped in his class, you'll suffer each day. Ask a question? He'll mock with a grin, Leaving you lost, no chance to win. In his tangled grip, there's no release. Dwight's disarray offers no peace.

He is SO RUDE and I just don't feel respected, also he grades you harshly and sometimes gives you a 0 for unreasonable reasons. AVOID HIS CLASS at any cost, unless you want to be verbally abused for the whole term or you simply want to see how bad can a prof be.

You can't believe how bad he is until you take his class. He hates everyone and wants everyone to fail, I suppose that's his objective in his life. Failing students and making things hard for them makes him feel powerful. I really hope he sleeps well at night because what he does is not ok.

It's absurd the self importance this man has. Class degraded from alright to horrible fast. Often belittles any questions from students. Expects students to read every message on canvas like this is the only class they take. Don't bother with the department they won't help you. Positive reviews sounds like he wrote them. Just stay away honestly.

Avoid if possible

he doesn't care about students at all, our midterm had some stuff that wasn't even taught to one of the sections, and one of the lecture slides that was required for the lab exam was released after the lab exam. If you can avoid this class, avoid it. If not, take this class with electives. He believes that we should know everything he "teaches".

Textbook definition of a psychopath. Saddest human I have encountered in my life. Desires you to fail, quoted: "thanks for paying my salary with your 214 tuition, year after year after year". Disgrace to the department and even University. -Best wishes to your time at the retirement home :)

The only people who like this guy are the ones who are scared that the industry they've always dreamed of joining is not what it has made out to be. Dwight is merely a fart in the wind. Don't let a grump get in the way of your degree. Take it on the chin, the tech industry is full of great people. Smell the roses, not the farts.

Bad course

Most unorganized class I've ever been in. Likes to make announcements about assignments and tests last minute. Very rude and lacks professionalism. I wouldn't say it's a waste of money, as I've learned quite a bit about C, bash, make, ect, but the way he runs the class is very frustrating and is not fair to the average student. Don't recommend.

literally half the class dropped it/withdrew because failing rate was so high. went from 400 to 150 students by the time finals started. good luck though!

Truly the most awful class and prof. This man acts as if his class is the only one that matters. Extremely disorganized, unprofessional and rude. Expects so much homework to be turned in, as well as surprise quizzes AND discussions, but if you want grades back on time forget about it. My opinion of the department wasn't high but has gotten worse.

He has been witness to modifications made to the course syllabus during the class term, which is against university policy. He should be ashamed of himself, and deserves no respect for his actions.

If you can stay away, STAY AWAY. I'm pretty sure he hates his students and thinks it's some kind of prize that so many people drop/fail his class. If you'r taking CMPT214 learn C, bash scripting, Makefiles, and get familiar with the terminal over the summer or before the class begins so you don't fail!!

Worst course ever! Numerous assignments just worth 2 or 3 percentage of the total grades. There is not even enough practical demonstration of the topics taught unlike other colleges where proff. shows you during the lab on how to code and make programs before they give you assignments. This course could have been divided into two courses.

I truly don't understand why this class has become as cutthroat as it has this semester. Over 50% failure rate, and the students are blamed for "not wanting to learn". There is outrage from students justifiably, but again and again students are blamed for poor grades. Take accountability, this should not be happening with 6 instructors.

Strange guy. I understand his motivations but his execution is lacking, and the psychology of Dwight is unprecedented in the worst way. Don't understand how we are meant to hand things in on time but we didn't get marks back from labs/asns we did from Oct 'til the new year with no repercussions. Harsh marker, but interesting class. I learned a lot.

Horrible prof ever. He just likes and wants to teach the students who are expert, who can answer all the questions in the classes, otherwise , according to him, "DROP THIS COURSE/ THIS IS NOT FOR YOU/ THIS DEPARTMENT IS NOT FOR YOU". He is very unkind. You can't leave his BORING class before him, if you do- "YOU WILL BE UNEMPLOYED IN FUTURE."

had a terrible experience with this professor and strongly advise against taking their class. The professor is incompetent, disorganized, and fails to teach effectively. They falsely accused me of misconduct without evidence, creating a hostile and unfair environment. Avoid this class at all costs.

The worst professor i have had in my entire life. Assignments take time of 4 classes and labs which, according to him, are for quick feedback, were graded after final exams. The guy does not answer any question directly. managed to pass the class with great difficulty. Heard he is going to retire soon, thank god!.
