Prof. Clark is amazing! He just moved from Colorado. He's one of the best professors I had! Read the notes and listen out for his examples they are really funny and hard to forget. Do not be afraid to ask him questions! Study for his tests and exams tho
Its true, he's an incredible professor. Very funny. You will really n'joy this course. I was kind of forced to take it cause I needed another elective to graduate but by the third week of classes, I was SO happy I was taking it. You will learn a lot. He actually makes the information interesting. The US can keep sending their profs to Canada!
He's one of the best profs ever at UTM! Very smart! funny! very knowledgeabe! learned a lot from him...I'd consider it a previledge to be taught by him! He actually cares for his students and wants them to do good on the exam! He's just an amazing human being! I'd say the best of the best at UTM!
He's the best prof at UTM. I just love him! his teaching style, his way of lecturing, everything! he's a great human being! He cares about his students~I wish I had him for ANT101 as well!
He's Okay.. he's not organized an i just think he needs more experience teaching
The best professor I had in my undergrad study.
He's knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. Best prof I've had so far! Lectures are interesting and humorous. You won't even want to skip! He's very helpful, and even makes study sheets to summarize the textbook material. This is considered a writing course, yet the most writing I've done all semester is the SA portion of the midterm!
I was dreading this class before taking it, but this was one of the best classes I've taken in my undergraduate studies. He is a wonderful professor, who cares about his students. He explains concepts clearly and makes the material very interesting. I would love to take more courses taught by him.
Prof Clark is the reason I want to go on in cultural anthropology! There is no doubt that he is the best proff UTM has had by far. His passion and knowledge in his area surpasses any other lecturers, and anyone would be be missing out if they don't take his class if they get the chance!
Best Prof i ever had
excellent professor... cares much about teaching, is nice, cool. If you pay attention and do the readings you might discover amazing things in ANT204
GREAT PROF. LOTS OF PASSION FOR HIS WORK. TALKS ALOT IN LECTURE. READINGS ARE VERY HIGH PRIORITY- AS IS PARTICIPATION.ATTENDANCE VIA WEEKLY QUIZES. HAD HIM FOR 3 COURSES- ALWAYS GREAT & INTERESTING
His passion will inspire you and keep you interested in lectures. Please, don't take this course if you aren't going to keep up with the many readings and go to tutorial!! Otherwise you will be very disappointed with your grade
Although he is a good professor, I don't see the big fuss about him on here. He repeats himself for most of the lecture, and asks students questions for the last part of class. I'm not paying you thousands of dollars to hear the opinions of my classmates, I'm paying you so I can hear what you have to say.
I have to admit, he is a good Prof. He talks to students like they're people. He's so sweet. He lectures for the first half and we have a discussion during the second half. Prof Cody did it tht way too so he's following what we're used too. I think he's awesome so far. im a bit scared of the test though. dun diss him.study & ur $ will be worth it.
This prof is absolutely terrible! He picks favorites and if your not one of his favorites then forget getting a good grade. Its not particularly hard but he marks based on who he likes. Too bad he's not a great teacher because the material itself was pretty interesting. I would never take a course with him again.
He's amazing. This is my first time taking his classes. He's the best Prof I've ever had! I'm taking two courses with him and I feel very lucky to have him as a Prof. He's so warm hearted, kind, intelligent and the least **** person on earth, no joke! He's cute too.I love him. It bugs me when people say bad stuff about him. He's so pure, cool &real
great prof, great course. smart guy and tried to get to know students names which is neat. fun material. ta jessica was smart too but she takes forever to grade our stuff. must be busy which is fine then
wonderful course and he know my name!!! it's not the easiest name but he knows it. i feel so special. take the course! you will love it.
smartest prof ive ever had. need more of him in this world. great guy. great person.
good course. there was a lot of reading, but i learned a lot. the prof was very knowledgable and tried to know students by name, even weird names like mine. felt like he talked to me like an individual who mattered to him. very passionate about his work and loved to talk about his daughters. they have a really cool dad. take the course.
If you come to every class and do the readings you will do really well in class. He is the nicest guy and is really enthusiastic about the subject. Get to know him, he will lean your name and look out for you. He wants you to do well in his course!
He was great! Wanna know why??? because he CARES!!! He needs to teach his colleagues to try that. And he rewards hardwork. If you put in the effort you will do well. No question. He doesn't put any trick questions on the tests. He tests you on what you learn and you can do well w/effort. EVERY student loves this guy!! He's fair and soo polite!!
A lot of reading for a second year course. However, it was worth it!! This prof is incredible. I've never had a better prof. The material was so interesting and he was so passionate about his lectures. He sure has a good heart. Totally the coolest prof eva and he's really nice to his students.I'm taking his classes this yr too. his kids are lucky!
Great prof, always makes the course information interesting and exciting.
I?m posting again because he is the best prof ever! My heart loves him. I loved the bracelet story. He?s so attractive, smart, warm hearted and kind!! Definitely the best at utm. And he is soooo much nicer than the average person. I love this class and the courses I've taken with him in the past. I wish there were more people like him.
& I just like this prof sooooo soooo much. He's an amazing human being. There is no one nicer than him out there. I wish everyone thought about things the way he does. He has so much care for others and he's soo good looking. I just love him. His courses are awesomeness. I hope he teaches forever so more people will see things the way he does!
The best prof in the history of the universe!!!!
He's not just an amazing prof, he is an amazing person- he cares about the world. He wants a better world for everyone. I really like him so much. He is THE BEST. And if you come to class, read, study you'll get a good grade. He seems to really want his students to do well. He is so real and human and just stunning in every way.
nothing new learned, just digested the old general ideas of what the "world" is and gave alternative ways to perceive it. No real connections between subjects of study, yet due to charismatic approach to the course, blinds/confuses people with metaphors, making them believe they learn new ideas. If philosophy is your thing, take the course
I'm personally offended when I hear anything negative said abt his class/him because he's one of the few profs who cares and he teaches stuff every person on earth should be taught, but isn't. He wants humans to live in harmony and he does such a good job teaching. I love that he does not see skin colour. He is awesome x infinity and he's my fav!
I want to take all of his classes. He is SUCH a great teacher and even though he didn't use any slides he was so interesting and easy to listen to.
He is an AMAZING prof. He's beautiful from the core. I take certain courses only because he is the prof. He's one of those people you only meet once-he's so special. And he's so darn nice, polite and respectful and he questions everything. Very smart. I just love everything about him. He's handsome too and just really into teaching &so good at it.
Repeats himself way too much, if you want to actually learn something, avoid him.
Awesome prof!! Very helpful with reviewing course materials and tests, and is very engaging with class material! he rocks!!!
BEST prof ever! So sad I won't be able to take more classes with him. Expects you to work hard, but the material is so interesting you will want to anyway. TOO GOOD =)
No textbooks were used but he provided article links and scans from books. YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS. LISTEN AND TAKE NOTES!! YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU DON'T.
I took a few of his course and he repeats himself soooo much. if you take one course you have taken them all. no lie. and he told one story about his daughter close to 20 times through all the courses ive had with him. u will think he is great after his first/second course, but after that you are wondering, what's new?
Typical lecture: mentions 3-4 defintions and spends 2 hours talking about them, providing a variety of examples while doing so. You really don't learn much from this as his lectures could all EASILY be completed in less than an hour. Easy course though, just complain about inequality during lectures/online discussions and you earn 15-20% for free!
the answer is capitalism. seriously nice guy.
Took this as a summer course & it was a whirlwind! You had to attend every lecture and do every reading or fall behind, even by missing 1 class. That being said, his lectures were extremely engaging and interesting! He was easy to listen to even though he lectures at a fast pace. An easy marker over all. He also gave lots of help outside class.
Great speaker. 1 hour, bi-weekly classes that kicked ass. Never a dull lecture. Tells interesting and insightful stories.
Great, engaging, bi-weekly lectures. He is a great speaker.
4TH year picking up a few credits to finish an anthro minor, probably dropping the minor after this class and its a first year course. The lack of lecture slides and the quick speech of Clark has left me severely confused as to what it is we are actually supposed to know. By far the most frustrating class I have ever taken due to lack of clarity.
He is very enthusiastic but does not have any power points. It was a first year class and he was very tough and treated it like a 34th year. You must go to lectures or you will be lost. His midterm and exams are BRUTAL! Regret taking his class.
Prof. Clark was my favourite UofT Prof. He's brilliant and friendly, but his best quality is how deeply he commits to trying to get students to actively engage in and think about the issues and ideas he's teaching about. If you take his class truly absorb it, you will be graded fairly, and def away with a renewed outlook on everyday life.
Amazing prof, tho there's a lot of reading, he explains the stuff really well. Extremely passionate about ant and geniunly helpful. A very fair marker, however you MUST attend all lectures and read! He's one of the best profs I've had so far and I wouldn't think twice before taking a course with him. Absolutely amazing person!
Awful prof. His outline states things like dont want your opinion for essay, dont bother explaining why you are not in class. He speaks to hear his own voice. Never felt so disconnected to a course. Just talks for 2 hours summarizing the readings no analysis. No coherence is lecture or his points.
His lecture style takes some getting used to, and the content is pretty radical, but if you can take it in, it'll change how you see the world. Clark's an amazing, inspirational profperson, who truly lives and breathes the stuff he lectures about. Bonus points for his generosity to students. His class was a game changer for me. Highly recommend.
There was a lot more reading than I expected but it was all very interesting. His lectures summarize the readings and expand on them. He is very passionate about what he teaches so if you ask for help, he'll be more than happy to help you. Also, he made us a buy a cheap book ad gave us the other readings we needed. Really nice. :)
He does not use any powerpoint slides and can get confusing and overwhelming at some points during lecture. He does offer abundant help, but tests are extremely challenging. Excessive required readings. Concepts seem straight-forward, but he somehow makes it complicated. Probably wouldn't recommend this course unless you're looking for a challenge
Enthusiastic prof who loves what he does and it shows! Cares about the world and his students. You'll do well if you try. Most definitely a favourite of mine.
Rewards hard work. Amazing human being. Cares. Do what is expected and you'll be good. Unforgettable type of prof/person. Gives you hope. Really good person. Experience him. You won't regret it. There is nothing I don't like about him or his teaching. Institution is fortunate to have a prof who'll make time for his students. I'll never forget him.
brilliant :) Loved his class. Take it!
HE IS AMAZING!!! He is such a good lecturer who speak enthusiastically and throughly about the material. Dr. Clark takes time to know his students and remembers most of our names. He is clearly passionate about the subject and I would highly recommend going to his office hours! DO YOUR READINGS!!! Or you're not going to end up well in his class.
Has minimal experience in the field he teaches and it shows. I eventually researched his background and my suspicions were confirmed. My guess there is a serious lack of available teaching prospects in this area and they chose him because of his *rather preliminary* work in Indonesia. Still very odd.
oH my goodness this class is challenging... there are so many readings each week! usually 3 per week, often 15+ pages each. midterm was brutal: multiple choice testing you on all the readings? woeijfoiwen he has so much prepared and lots of great things to say but its kind of hard to follow his lecture style (no ppts) thankfully cas is my minor
very hipster and humorous. Can be very unorganized with constantly updating syllabi throughout the course. very accommodating
Tests (1 midterm, 1 final) are heavily based on lectures. Very personable and nice guy, and the contents of this course are fascinating though not necessarily easy.
God tier prof. Best lectures, very entertaining and makes you rethink everything you know about the world. 11/10 would recommend. 12/10 would take again.
An absolutely exceptional instructor with passion and a desire to see students succeed and treats everyone the same. Very possible to do good if you study and come to class and do the work. Smart prof and great class
he is always on his a-game as a professor and open to meeting with students outside of classroom to discuss topics which is helpful to understand the readings
Smart, passionate guy and student-oriented
Terrible prof. only cares about students who are able to memorize the readings. Gives complex readings and says these are light. one of if not the worst prof i have ever had. Will never take a class with him again. Almost like he's happy when people are failing his class.
DO NOT CHOOSE DYLAN CLARK. I was taking this course very seriously, I read every single material. Materials are tough. However, I got an 18% percent on my final, I am sure I got many of questions at least half mark, and he refused to provide any grading rubric. He just wanted to fail someone and he picked me and dramatically lower my grade.
smartest prof and class a breeze. focus on the lectures and if there is reading he mention focus on reading and some points from reading he mention in class. i did good and nice guy overall. focus on readng and lecture too and u do good too
Worst Teacher Ever, irresponsible, careless
He's amazing as a prof (engaging, caring) and chooses really good material, but the tests are VERY difficult. Do not expect his classes to be easy.
One of my favourite profs ever! Readings were fascinating & really make you think critically. Dr. Clark is clearly passionate about what he teaches. Content can be complicated but is definitely manageable if you make time for the readings.
nicest guy and helps u succeed if you want to succeed. He is really into the stuff he teaches and really the nicest guy. good experience
fantastic course and wonderful experience. he is a great guy and will help u do good if u ask for help. very possible to succeed if you try
Good prof who makes an effort to include readings from scholars who live or study in the countries discussed. I enjoyed the readings and lectures, but the two tests are very challenging and worth 75% of your grade. You must read and understand every single assigned reading. Valuable course, but I would never subject myself to those tests again.
ABSOLUTE GEM OF A PROF. Dr. Clark is amazing at what he does and is a passionate educator. I liked his teaching so much that I'm taking two more of his courses next semester! Honestly, he's a godsend for CAS majors who love little, weighty courses - midterm, paper, final - that's it. It's quite a bit of reading, but worth it. You really grow a lot!
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He's a guy that genuinely cares. He's more than a fair marker and is really generous with his marking since there are so few assessments. I absolutely love his energy and passion. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand and gives readings that make you think. Great vibes. Take his courses and you'll grow a ton.
Most rudest and unreachable prof ever
He messed up his own syllabus so the midterm was moved forward about a month. Also, he's obsessed with citations, he thinks you plagiarize everything and just gives you a zero. For any problems you have the only reply he gives you is 'I'm really sorry but there's nothing I can do'. But yeah, he does teach enthusiastically.
He is a crazy prof, every materials in his course is a mess. His outline is constantly changing. The lecture is very chaotic and often makes mistakes. He never responds to students emails. The exam is very difficult. In the 500-person class, more than 200 people eventually dropped the course, and many people eventually failed the exam.
A passionate lecturer, but every weekly lecture lasts for about 2.5h, too heavy for a br course. Closed-book and one-way exams, pretty hard. Getting high marks is definitely not easy. I put in a lot of effort, did all the readings, and took a lot of notes every lecture. I believe I spent 5 hours on this course per week.
if you watch the lecture and do the readings then it is not hard to do well on his tests. make sure to understand all the concepts and remember examples. the essays were marked a little hard tho. however a nice prof that cares for his students and a passionate lecturer
Prof Clark is very passionate about what he teaches. He has also stated himself that his tests are hard and his papers get marked harder than usual. Unless you are very passionate about the subject being taught or if it is required, I would steer clear. There are no PowerPoints, just him talking. Lots and lots of reading. Hes cool, just hard
He is extremely rude and unreachable. He never replied to students' questions. The exams were extremely hard and half of the class ended up dropping this course. Course average was C. It used to be B- or B+ before he taught this course. Btw. He's obsessed with citations, if he thinks you plagiarize, he'll just give you a zero.
His course was a mess. He constantly changes his syllabus and the midterm got moved around one month ahead. He was extremely irresponsible and didnt care about his students at all.
One of the worst profs I have ever had. Unreasonably hard tests for no reason. Doesnt care about your options as he says. Do not take a class with this prof. Absolutely terrible.
Easily one of the best professors I've had at UofT. While classes are quite reading-heavy, he makes material very accessible to students, and is well-known for fascinating lectures that will permanently change the way you conceive of development in Asia. He's also very helpful in office hours, and is a prof who you truly feel wants you to succeed
Professor Clark is absolutely my favourite professor so far at the U of T. You may expect to read a lot, but he is an expert who helps you comprehend the dense readings and makes readings entertaining. Professor Clark always responds to emails in time and he definitely cares about the well-being of his students no matter where they come from.
lectures are fun but repeating the same info, again and again, makes it boring. The course heavily depends on readings so if you have a busy schedule, don't take this class as you won't be able to get anything from the course. Assignment instructions are very unclear so you have to get your head around and basically guess what assignment's about
Dr. Clark is an amazing lecturer. Even though this class may seem hard because of the heavy readings, he always makes sure to details the most important points during the lectures. He is always reachable for questions, and gives the opportunity to participate in class.
He is probably my favorite prof at UofT. I've taken most of the CAS courses he teaches. He is fair on tests and projects though I did find that there is variety in how the TAs mark across his courses. His lectures are great.
this professor is a gem. He cares about his students and gives quality education. If you are looking at the bad reviews from ant204... is because a bunch of them got caught cheating. My advice? do the readings, go to class and enjoy. His material is so applicable to real life, which makes it very valuable. I loved this class. LOVED it.
Really a great professor
Excellent Professor who displays a clear passion for the subject he is teaching but more importantly, he cares tremendously for the students. Changes your perspective on the topics he teaches. Take good lecture notes and do the readings!!!!!
Study if you want good marks.
1) hes a white man teaching asian genders he has no nuanced understanding of the cultures he is teaching and makes baseless, vague, and offensive statements about asian cultures 2) he thinks colonialism is "complicated" and wasnt all that bad. u can fill in the blanks 3) repeatedly calls asian people orientals and uses "n*gro" to describe black ppl
Don't listen to the bull you see on here. He's patient, attentive to students, and one of the most eye opening and inspirational profs I've had the privilege of learning from. He is one of the rare professors that you remember and appreciate, through his passionate and engaging lectures to his arguably reasonable (to say the least) assignments.
fav prof at uoft! so sweet and great lectures. if you put in the work, you'll see results - not easy A but not unattainable.
This class was extremely disappointing. For an introductory level course, he lays it on thick with 3 readings a week that are anywhere from 15-35 pages a piece. They're interesting enough readings, but he expects students to be able to conduct upper-level analysis with very basic instruction from him. Figure out what he thinks and regurgitate.
This class is really interesting but that's where the positives end. The professor is nice and I enjoyed talking with him but omg the grading is atrocious. We were only graded on a midterm, essay, participation, and a final. You have NO clue if ur failing before the drop date. TAs are no help and grading is all over the place. womp womp.
The content is exciting but this is a heavy 200 course. The readings are essential for the class (no lec slides). Tutorials/TAs werent beneficial, youre better off relying on discussion Qs. Marking was all over the place and you had very little chance to improve your mark, you either did awful or amazing. No clue what your grade is in the class.
Great lecturer and caring professor! He gave me a great extension for my final essay when I partook in a Divestment occupation. The course material in CAS360 was very intellectually stimulating -- the readings are a bit long but it is so worth it if you put in the time. Classes are awesome, Prof Clark makes hard material digestible and relatable.
such an insightful course -- you can tell that he really cares about what he's teaching. appreciates and notices who participates but doing so isn't mandatory!!
Professor is nice but his lectures are a bit disorganized. Going to the lectures are necessary bc he doesn't post lecture slides/notes. Don't be afraid to ask questions and overall the topics were interesting.
Professor Clark is truly one of a kind. His lectures are delivered without slides and are heavily reliant on the readings. However, the content and lectures are very eye-opening and worth every minute. Would recommend his lecture to anyone as he is very accessible, understanding, and caring outside of class.
a great prof! lovely lectures has a solid british accent
Didn't know what to expect as a CAS100 pioneer, but it became one of my favourite classes. Engaging lectures and insightful content. Prof was super understanding and approachable. Weekly readings are a must. Not a bird course—grading is tough from the TA, but with effort, an A is achievable. Would recommend!!
What can I say... literally one of the best! Amazing curated syllabus, engaging lecturer. Encourages critical thought. Never condescending, unbiased. Transparent grading. The best that U of T anthropology has to offer. Give this man tenure please! I would take any of his classes any day. You do have to do the work, and if you do, you won't regret it
HORRENDOUS at giving assignments, all the papers had incredibly unclear prompts and would give the worst possible grades for the pettiest reasons. Attendance is mandatory, unfortunately, because the lectures suck. Could have had a great class in a subject I spend all my time studying but no, he just wasted all of my time
Professor Clark is genuinely one of my favourite lecturers I've had here at UofT. He is an absolute gem, his syllabus is quite accurate, his grading his fair, and often enough he will try his best to get to know you by name. Admittedly there is a solid amount of reading each week, and they are deinfitley nessecary to succeed on midterms and tests.
A lot of reading. Lectures are a must. But worth it IMO. He introduces new and interesting concepts with great in-depth analysis. Only downside is he's very strict about lectures (arrive on time and don't leave early!).
I loved Professor Clark! Lectures were very thought provoking, and readings were always interesting. Though they are long, as long as you attended lecture, you could get the general gist of them. He did his best to ensure students were as prepared as possible. MAKE SURE TO ANSWER DISCUSSION POST QUESTIONS!! Responds to emails fast, very affable.
