He thinks we're two yrs. old. Tries to teach life lessons! Tests were o.k. puts alot of weight on the final
No Comments
Teaches as for high-school level. If you're dumb, and don't know math, you won't pass. I got an A, but was the only one in the class.
He's very unclear with his teaching. I had to drop. I took the class over with a different Prof and I got an A.
He talks alot . he is a very interesting man. He likes to show you how life and math coincide. He is a great math teacher. He could be a lil more thorough, though. I would refer him to anyone. He was very entertaining.
he is an ok teacher, but if your are not good in math you will failhis class. He is kind of confusing and some times boring; if u have him and u fail the first test just drop the class.
Coulda been better!!! but do able =/
good teacher
Ok professor, overall nice guy, he does give you encourgement and talk about life and intertwine them with math. He rushes, tests are tough, doesn't review, gives exams on things we never go over. I dropped the class doesn't give make up exams. He just rushed too much for my liking and didn't even stop for questions b/c we "didn't have enough time"
he talks wayyyyyyyyyy to much. real nice guy he moves kinda quick and lied about extra credit. if u have him now and math is not ur subject drop it like it was on fire however if u love math u should have fun with this guy. tests r extremely hard.
This professor is hard, he rushes through the work. This professor dosen't take his time to review or go over a math problem. He will go over once, than he moves on to something new. THAT IS NOT TEACHING!!! so I drop it because I don't need the headache.
kool guy, but he has a PH-D in math and has that attitude of "well, i know what I'M doing." He's not much help review also. He'll only go over it if you ask him to. AND HIS TEST ARE CRAZY HARD!!
This professor is way to hard. He teaches to fast. we were 2 weeks ahead of all the others classes and most of the people were not passing. the class started with 35 students or so and ended with 11 students. more than half dropped. we If you need to take this class consider another teacher. if no choice do the class work ahead of time & good luck.
Great professor, had an easy A. He explains everything really god, you just have to ask him. Very intelligent man.It was a pleasure to take his class
Don't even bother taking his class unless you have a PHD yourself. All he does explain things once and has no time for you if you dont understand him. QUALITY TEACHER right there. There are alot of of math courses you dont have to struggle through find ONE and get out of his!! He's not worth it , he's a self centered man thats all.
This professor has been by far the worst I have had in college. He rushes to much. Everything to him is baby stuff. He teaches new material with minimal explantions and does not like to repeat himself. I was forced to withdraw in order to maintain my GPA. If you fail his first test you should consider dropping it only gets harder... good luck!
Very hard tests. he doesnt collect homeworks. dont need the text book.
his talking is excessive. and its hardly ever pertaining to the work. he does move type fast. and as for his test, it can be hard. but he knows his stuff. sometimes its important to make him repeat himself, but prepare for an unnecessary lecture with it. and he laughs at his own stupid jokes. once again his talking is excessive. VERY.
It was a horrible experience i learned more about his life history then i actually did math n he pulls his tests from harvard text books. this is coming from a person with a 3.8 gpa ...Don't take him i repeat run it's horrible and devasting especially when he tries to make a joke
Knows what he is teaching, if you have to take pre calculus next you have to take him he will give you a good base otherwise if you want to get the grade easily you may take others
Don't take he's class if you are not a math person. DON'T!!! I just took he's class Fall 10', and I wish I have'n't. The test are very hard, and he thinks math is "cute", and he teach too fast. Don't take him! Save your time, money and GPA grade
Great teacher but extremely hard. It was easy at the beginning but it gets extremely hard later on. If your not good at math like that try another professor. The good thing is that is that he is real straight up. He tells how his class is going to be. But trust me if you are failing or see your self falling behind. RUN and don't even look back
Too Fast, doesn't care if you get the question or not. He pases by looking his test score Only. I wont take him even for free next time.
Very hard, he teaches way too fast, I had to drop the class because I was failing, I wouldn't recommend him, and he grades off from your test scores
his a great professor but not for every one only if u like math if u dont like math dont take the class with him
I took mr hill for my remedial math class last semester. He solves problems on the board way to fast. He doesn't take time to explain the work to you. He acts as if we knew the work already. He never had office hours. We tried to ask him questions after class he would say he had another class or he didn't have the time. He would talk about being a
If you have a good math foundation than he is a great professor to take, but if you don't, take someone else. He doesn't baby you, but then again this is college, not high school. He also drops your lowest grade if you have good attendance.
he didn't explain his work, he assumed that everyone knew what he was talking about, thought the class super fast, he would do 2 to 3 lessons in one class, did not help anyone in the class
Great Professor! If you like math you will do great in his class. Hill is a funny guy and cares a lot for his students, you just have to ask for help when you need it. He is also very honest/straight up with his students and his grading system is fair.
resting professor, fair, articulate, with high standards. Will hold students academically accountable.
Overall a fair professor. Gives a review sheet with answer key before every test. Explains everything in details. Does many problems. Must keep up and take notes! Cannot fall behind. Doesnt collect the homework but you should do the problems either way because its great review for his test. Takes most problems from hw. His test are fair.
Took prof. Hill's class during summer; it was a 5-week express course. what a ride! Prof. Hill was thorough, detailed and encouraging. Dropped the lowest score of 3 regular tests; nevertheless, one had to keep up and do homewrk in order to pass. I would like to take my next math course with him.
I took MAT1180 during Spring "12 under Dr. Hill. He is very encouraging, but a no nonsense, professor. He does not coddle students, but expects them to conduct themselves as real college students. To do well, one must keep up and do homework, because several test questions may be those that may be overlooked in the assigned problems.
Took MATH1275 during fall '11 withis professor. he grades primarily on th ebasis of test scores; homework assignments are not collected nor figured in the final grade. When extra credit problems are given, greater effort and possibly more insight are required than regularly assigned/disssed problems. He is a tough grader, but generally fair.
Don't take Dr. Hill's class if you are not prpared to study regularly and pass very challenging tests! As some have said, he is a tough professor;but he is also straight up with students. He lets you know in the beginning what you will face in he course. I worked hard for my A-, but it as worth the effort.
Very helpful when explaining details about problems. Encourages to be focus, and a very good professor.
Dr. Hill is a Great professor. He is Amazing at explaining the course material. As a student, I advise you to do your BEST. Eventhough he doesntn't necessarily check the homework, make it your best interest to do it. TRUST ME, it's to your BENEFIT. You will be prepared for the exams if you do ALL the homework, assignments and understand them!
Wonderful Professor. Really NICE. Do the homework!!! Don't be Lazy. Math is a subject you have to put down time to study. The best way to retain the knowledge is Practice, Practice, and Practice! That's the best advice I can give you. That is how it'll get into your head. Good Luck! :)
Very serious professor, not lenient at all.
I really regretted taking his class. I feel like he's always mocking college students for having "high-schoolish" attitude. I was determined to work hard and I'm a straight A student but it seems that his lack of passion for teaching made me fail this course. I'm never taking his class, ever! You have been warned.
This is the worst math professor I've ever dealt with. He's old fashioned, strict, and not lenient. He doesn't care about the homework, doesn't check it. He doesn't give you extra credit or assignments to make up your grade. He's an old man and doesn't grade easy. He failed majority of his classes. Please if you care about your gpa, don't take him
Dr. Hill is a very interesting professor. He has high standards and moves through material at rapid pace. He fields all questions and provides detailed, on-the-spot answers. I earned an A- in his precalculus class, but had to work like heck to get that grade. I liked his no-nonsense attitude, and would gladly take one of his classes again.
Prof. Hill has a "take-no-prisoner" attitude. He does not coddle students; he is definitely firm, but fair. Unlike some teachers/professors, he gives challenging tests that you have to really study for. I earned a B+. If one is looking for an easy, "high-school" way out, forget about taking Dr. Hill's class. This professor is the real deal.
Dr. Hill is a wonderful professor who truly is "firm but fair". One must study regularly and seriously prepare for tests to do well. I earned an A in his class; but it seems that the students who complain the most do the least and are not willing to do the necessary work to succeed. I plan to register for my next math class with this professor.
It is true, Dr. Hill is old fashioned, strict and not lenient - all admirable traits. I respec him very much because he is not wishy-washy and not inclined to lean in every direction in which the wind blows. In his classe, one has to actually earn his/her graqde. I applaud Prof. Hill. We need more like him. College is college, not middle school.
I just finished the 5-week Summer course in MAT1175 under Dr. Hill. He completed the course outline as promised, and we had very lively review sessions prior to each test. He frequently emphasized traps/mistakes we should look out for. I made a B+ in his class. He is an excellent professor with very high standards. What more can one ask for?
Professor Hill is a very unique teacher. I respect him and his teaching methods in which there is no nonsense. He does not treat us like high school students and this course is not that easy and it is not impossible. If you study and work hard you can manage an A. That is what this professor wants is for all his students to work hard.
The worst professor I've ever had to deal with. Please if you care about your GPA do NOT take Hills's class. He is incompetent, arrogant and disrespectful. He is completely oblivious as to what the students are having trouble with and refuses to assist them when asked for help.
Don't take his class
Dr. hill is a really nice guy, very lenient. He is also old. In the beginning of the semester he missed about 1 month due to him having surgery. Attendance is NOT mandatory such as lateness, leaving class early because he takes attendance at the end of class! 3 In class exam worth 60% 1 exam gets dropped! One final exam worth 40%. I got a B+
Prof Hill is thorough, he is also understanding and wants all his students to pass. He takes attendance at the end of class. I do recommend.
Excellent professor, takes the time to make sure every student had a clear understanding of the work, he covers everything that will be on final exam
He is the kind of instructor that assigns h.w and doesn't check at least every other week. So if your a student that does h.w don't bother selecting. And another thing sometimes his test deviate so much from the class work that the tests are overwhelmingly hard. Just terrible!
Never had a worse math professor than professor Hill . He clearly lacks knowledge on math as a professor ,doesn't explain anything at all expects you to know everything about . Makes lots of mistakes while solving problems in class
TAKE HIM! HE IS THE BEST! HIS TESTS ARE DIFFICULT BUT HE IS SUCH A HELPFUL TEACHER AND I JUST LOVED HIM! HE WAS SO GOOD- AND HE TAUGHT REALLY WELL! 5 STARS
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! Please avoid this professor ... You can b very good at math and he can still fail you... one main reason is because of his exams... one question can b worth as high as 20 and make one minor mistake on it he marks it completly wrong even takes off points on sketched graphs... Again PLEASE AVOID!!!
not the best but not the worst. ok overall. hard tests. but explains ok. would take again. gives extra credit for homework so do it if you need it..
If you want to understand math take a class with earl hill. He explains tha best I ever had. If you're looking for an easy a you have the wrong address. U must work hard but you will be rewarded accordingly. He is fair. Again If you're serious would recommend if not not.
He's a good teacher who is willing to explain if you ask. Otherwise, he would not explain further. He has smile on the face all the time which make us more comfortable in the class. Sometimes the way he used for explanation is confusing, so you need to ask to clarify it.
I would never take him again. His teaching method isn't clear and his exams are hard. He would make his own exams. He gives a review sheet before exam but there will be nothing like review sheet. The final is pretty easy because it is from the math department. If you do well in the final you probably get an A. And do homework, he gives extra credit
I attended his class everyday and partcipated , did homework and ended up with a bad grade his exam where very tough nothing like what he taught in class , dont suggest you take him unless your really good at math and understand it.
Exams are hard, review is done a class before the final. Not a bad grader does apply partial credit. does give extra credit. you can use your phone during exam but do not be out there with it have respect.
Earl hill is confusing, he will say your doing great the BOOM you find out you failed!! The reviews are a 100% easier then the test! The test is really hard and he LOVES TAKING POINTS OFF!
He has bad handwriting. He forgets procedure very often. However, he's willing to help whenever you have questions.
Very tough grader even though he told me you are doing really good and u can get an A i did really good in class even got 98 on the test and still gave me B-. He does do the review before the test but the test is very much harder then the review.. take him only if you're good in math otherwise will end up dropping or failing
Earl Hill is a great professor and a really nice person. The material can be confusing and he might not be very clear trying to clarifying. My advice is to try to participate in class because he gives credit for it and do the homework throughout the semester because he will ask for it at the end.
Flys through the material didn't give us a chance to ask question since he was on to the next thing. Tests are harder than the review, doesn't collect homework at all and decided every student in the class for not studying and being lazy. Extremely disrespectful towards the students, extremely unprofessional. 80-90% decided to drop because of him.
He needs to be more clear and beware he writes in confusing script. Be on point with everything with a tutor.
He teaches really well but His class tests are way harder than the final. The questions he gives are so tricky. Even though you learn a lot from his lectures it's always hard to pass the exam.
He's a nice guy and is caring for the students and will gladly answer any questions you have. He tends to start class with what feels like a 20 min sermon on how things were in his days and how we should put in effort into our classes. He knows his math but isn't that great in explaining it and gives harder tests than the other professors.
I loved Professor Hill. He was awesome and cared about our grades and futures. He was straightforward and very informative.
In my experience he isn't a good professor at all he doesn't even allow us to use calculators at all during exams and his exams are extremely hard his lectures and his reviews are nothing like his exams worst professor ever doesn't even care about the students all he cares about is flying through the syllabus skip him he can't teach either
Best professor ever
Earl hill lectures are straight forward and informative take him you won't regret
Professor hill is such a nice professor he always goes straight to the point and it explains everything so well I found his lectures crystal clear i would love to take his class again
He covered everything that was gonna be on the final exam and his lectures are crystal clear he breaks things step by step to show how he wants it done I would highly recommend taking him for 1475
His exams are really easy most people say that his exams are hard because they didn't try all this professor wants to see is effort I would highly recommend him 1475
You don't have to hand in any homework but you are expected to do them on your own time. He gives extra credit here&there. He seems like a good professor but his teaching style is not for me. He doesn't go step by step; he likes to skip steps because he's used to it. He doesn't get that students are learning step by step so we get confused.
Prof Hill is too fast during class. He doesn't engage with the class enough, meaning he solves problems instead of letting the students solve and be challenged. Always comes late.
This professor is a real Professor he knows what he's doing and if you don't understand the method he would try helping you out in explaining it in a different way.
No, dont believe students who are saying he doesnt allow students solve problems he always says once you enter the class write any problem you found challenging then he would ask if any one wuould volunteer to solve it. He also gives reviews and allows students to solve the question unless no one wants to an d noe one raises hand then he will solve
Hill is a very nice man however that doesnt necessarily have anything to do with you passing He has a tendency to skip steps he assumed you learned in prerequisite classes so yes he does go extremely fast. If his teaching style does not match yours you will struggle. does not grade hw. The class is very exam heavy I ended up dropping.
The good thing about this professor is that he's very nice. That's about it. As for lectures, he teaches very fast and does not really explain things well. He's one of those professors who are hard to reach over email and he's even late to his own office hours. In addition, expect pop quizzes. It will happen. I would not recommend this professor.
So first and far most, don't take this class, to me he is an unqualified person in the math department. I've caught him making too many mistakes and unable to answer student questions. He follows the textbook and expects you to know everything. Also TESTS are 100% of your grade. IF you can avoid this class DO IT. I had no choice.
Very lazy professor. Smart, but lazy. For me, it was fine because I'm good at math, but everyone around me seemed to struggle. I seemed to be the only one doing really well in his class while everyone else struggled.
He sucks. He grades strictly on 4 test grades and hes a terrible teacher. He goes off topic, does not go over steps thoroughly, and is not active with students. He pretty much does problems on the board and talks to himself all class. Only take him if ur willing to study on your own and confident in your math.
this is one of those professors that give the easiest examples during class but gives the hardest questions during the exam. It was even worse when they switched to online classes as we only met 2 times between the end of March and the final.
Horrible, all he does is just read the text book and expect you to understand everything. Makes many mistakes and skips steps. Don't take him.
Very nice guy, BUT he goes too fast, goes off topic. He doesnt really teach you how to do it, more so, shows you and gives you the answer. Does not challenge the students to learn themselves and he reads through textbook. Please don't take him if you're ready to struggle. I've always been good at math, but online & him? I'd think again.
I have ben a student in two of Dr. Hill's classes and have found him to be an excllent professor. Even with the high standards he set in each course, I was able to make an A each time.
Dr. Hill is an amazing professor. He is somewhat old-fashioned and his online skills are not the greatest. But his teaching is at a high level. He has high standards and also seems concerned about the progress of his students. Anyone who is willing to work hard undoubtedly could make a good grade under his instruction. He is the real deal!
Prof. Hill is a very articulate and inspiring professor who sets high standards for students. He gives good lectures with relevant math properties, and is a tough grader. I have worked hard for the A I expect to make this semester, but some students right out of high school seem to want to pass without putting in the necessary work.
Prof. Hill is a wonderful professor. He does give challenging tests; but this is college, not the neighborhood high school. We must be able to compete in this 21st century. He seems very experienced and knowlegeable, and explains the material to a T. From my point of view, he is highly recommended.
Please don't choose this professor he just reads the textbook. Doesn't respond timely to emails . Very boring also
I am currently a member of 1275 and I find Dr. Hill to be a very active and inspiring instructor. He is up in age, but is definitely not boring. Many of the students make low test scores, and would probably be more successful if they themselves would actually "read the book" and practice doing problems. Prof. Hill is indeed highly recommended.
Was a bit worried after signing up for this mandatory Math Class after 10+ years of not doing any math, but if you do what Professor asks, take notes of everything even things said, do math examples (from the free online book) at home after each topic, and go over every review before exams, your test score will show exactly how hard you studied.
Professor Hill is a good person but bad teacher. I had him in Spring 2020, the first weeks in-person, his explanation of the math was lackluster. Then COVID hit, lockdown and the class was online. He didn't know how to use Zoom so we didn't even have class and by the time, he figured out how to use Zoom, it was finals and the entire class failed.
I was in Dr. Hill's precalculus class during Spring 2020 and managed to pass the class. Dr. Hill's online skills when Covid was shaking up the whole world were clearly lacking. But to judge him during that dark and frightening period when many people were dying on a daily basis is unfair. He was dynamic and inspiring during that difficult time.
Great person, great storyteller, bad professor. Honestly just needs to retire Dito. He repeats himself a lot and gets off track. and messes up problems a lot that even the students have to correct him. I withdrew from this class because I knew I was going to fail. Like I said great person but bad professor.
Great storyteller poor professor you fail one test your gpa is done 4 tests and that's it he should honestly retire he had like 3 surgeries during my semester
Dr. Hill is a wonderful professor who exhibits much enthusiasm and a joy for teaching. He is very well spoken and never sits down during the entire class period. He was an inspiration who shared much wisdom and knowledge. I hear that this amazing professor is retiring after a long career as a vibrant role model at City Tech. I wish him well!
Dr. Hill is an outstanding lecturer and a master teacher. Some students focused on the "interesting stories" without grasping the knowledge, wisdom and inspiration that could have been gained. Dr. Hill did make a mistake from time to time. Who has not? Even as teaching is thought to be God's work, I say farewell to a good and faithful servant!
Dr. Hill has been a wonderful role model for students at City Tech, especially those of color, for more than 50 years. After a successful and stellar career, it seems that he is retiring. I have taken and passed two of his classes. I wish I could have taken more. Dear Sir, may you reap your just rewards for a journey well travelled!
