Very good teacher and very helpful. Just be sure to be organized and prepared. Made an A in the class.
Very Good Teacher. Made an A and is funny. Great Guy.. recommend taking from him!
Very fun class! Enjoyed it very much! Makes talking in front of people less nerve-racking!
Make a good impression right away or he can lash out his harsh sarcasm. We were pressed for time with our speeches and had to finish the last group speech in two weeks, which was really hard considering one of the weeks was finals. If you miss your speech day, for any reason, you'll end up failing the class. I was on his good side so I managed an A
Mr. Burnett is a good teacher. While he sometimes may come across as condescending, it is only because he is so knowledgeable in his field. His class is challenging but do-able. He clearly outlines his requirements and expectations, taking out any guessing work.
Very good at teaching speech. The requirements in the class are clear, and as long as you attend class and put forth your best effort, you'll do well.
OK guy. Attendance is mandatory, especially on speech days. If you put forth good effort and talk to him about problems you may be having, he is good to you. Take the class seriously, apply a bit of thought to your topics and preparation to your presentations and you should be fine. Can be killer to people who are trying to slide by.
I don't think he was very good. He had poor skills, there were many students that didn't like his arrogance and this class was supposed to be almost like an elective, it felt like we were working on a PHd. Very bad experience, it's a shuffle if you will do well. Roll the dice and hope he's nice. Either he will have a good day or not.
Professor Burnett taught at HCC Fall 2008. His class is easy if you complete your speeches on time. This class was much like my Speech Class in HS. The Final will consist of a group presentation that is at least 20 Min. long. Lectures in class are long and boring but you don't need to take notes. No Textbook needed. Highly Recommendable.
Enjoyed his class. Had to teach myself PowerPoint but I did. 2 PowerPoint presentations along with 1 speech and 1 group project. HCC Fall 2008. You can make an A if you put the time in. Did not need the book.
One good advice, never walk in during a speech presentation. Just wait outside till it's over. He likes people who think outside the box. Remember he has heard hundreds of speeches. Do your presentations on what you know!
Good class. He's not easy, but he's not exactly that hard either if you put some effort into things and actually follow the guidelines he gives you. You get what you put into the class. If you get B's at HCC you'll get a C probably, but you probably deserve a lot more C's than you've been getting(because HCC is cake).
iF YOU DO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD AND COME TO CLASS THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON TO FAIL
Just got through with his class today. 3 week mini-mester, had a blast in the class, laughed had fun but actually learned alot about what it takes to write a speech and deliver it. The man wants what he says he wants if you dont do it that way he'll take off, put in an effort and youll do fine..Definitely would recommened him to anyone.
Excellent teacher, I enjoyed his class tremedously and gained a vast amount of lasting knowledge. I would definitely take another class with him.
Overall I enjoyed being in this class. You learn a lot of material that will come of use throughout your life. He was easy to communicate with and a great sense of humor. Make sure you show up everyday and turn assignments in on time. The best part of the semester is the end when you have a group presentation this was laid back and fun!
I know you are reading this Mr. Burnett to the class but I believe you need to change your speech grading criteria. If you miss a speech wither it was your fault or not you can basically fail the semester unless your other 3 speeches at 90+. Other than that very helpful class and the teacher has a passion for his craft.
Attend every class, spend a few hours preparing each speech, don't use slang.Very easy to make A or B. Thinks he's funny, but isn't, at all.
I enjoyed his class. Making speeches were easy and passing them was even easier. If you miss a speech there is a way to make it up, but it's hard to do so. He hardly gives any slack, but he's a good guy and it's an easy class. :]
He's a good teacher. I think some people don't care for him cause they can't take a joke. No homework & offers extra credit, but you must prepare for ALL speeches if you want an A. As long as you follow his directions you should be fine. I really enjoyed the group speech, made friends on campus, & ended up having a blast in the class!
I had him this past fall, '09 and we had a blast. He was very helpful and knows his subject. I would recommend him to anyone. I don't recall him calling White people birds. I think whoever said that was asleep in class that day.
DOCTOR Burnett looks just like Bernie Mac. First week of class he pulled up the city data to show us that Alvin, Texas was "lacking" black people. He talks a lot about the unfairness of minorities. If you are white, do not take this class.
Ha, ha, ha! My friend told me that some of the students who take him would feel the way these two nuckle heads would feel. What a joke! I learned a lot in his class. I'm a white student and I had no problem with this man. I would recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Burnett is a great professor. You can learn a lot from him. If you place a good faith effort into the class, you will get an A. Conduct good research on your topics and prepare before all of your speeches. You will have a blast with your final speech assignment.
He is a great teacher! What you put into it is what you will get out of it. He show's your examples and explains everything...and if you don't understand you can call or email him. He loves his career! I took him during a mini session (i recommend this!!) and within 3 weeks its OVER!! Take him!!
I HATE public speaking but I really enjoyed his class. One should not miss any classes but if you do talk to him and he will help you. I thought he kinda reminded me of my dad, or Bill Cosby. I enjoyed the last project and I made an "A" in the class. I felt that my speeches improved over the semester. It helps if one is acquainted with power point.
As long as you do your work, you'll get an A. I got a 99% for the entire semester. I loved the class and his method of teaching. I would take him again in a heart beat. He encourages the students to interact during class so its not too terrible when you have to get up and give a speech. Can't say enough good about him. Take him!
I do not like speech, but he mad it very fun and interesting. Another plus no need to purchase a textbook and no daily homework. Your speech is your test. He is a very GREAT teacher. As long as you come to class and do your speeches on time you will pass.
I took Public Speaking during a mini-semester. It was extremely fast paced, but we rarely had homework, and his sense of humor made the class very interesting. I highly recommend taking Dr. Burnett!!
This guy was impossible. I got C's on the 2 best speeches I did and then our group got a B on the final, we didn't even rehearse. He doesn't understand each person as an individual and I think that is a problem and he isn't clear on what he wants as far as paperwork from anyone. He causes more problems than solves. And he doesn't return emails!
so great! :) he's really funny and very passionate about what he does.. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Business Speaking, this class was way better than I ever dreamed a speech class could ever be! He is very easy going and his teaching style is to encourage your thinking skills and opinions. Very nice guy. He does love his job!
Doesn't reply to emails and doesn't use black board. Impossible to understand what he wants. I passed every speech and then he failed me on the final, even after I emphasized on the weaknesses of my previous speech.
Listen this professor is a great teacher. I have taken him twice..If you apply yourself you should be fine. As for as returning emails, It would probably be helpful to go n see him in person during office hours.
Took Bus. and Prof. Comm with Dr. Burnett. Book was needed for the first two weeks. One exam, three speeches, and many extra credit. Simple class, just follow guidelines on speeches and you will be fine. Make sure you go to class everyday as it is counted against you. I am not a speech fan but I was able to pass with an A.
took him for the summer, but he is very hard...if you don't mind applying yourself that thats great, but i think he requires way too much and I won't recommend him. But he's def a nice guy.
Professor is careless. I completed all my speeches by his guidelines and made low grades on them. My final grade was an F, I went and talked to him after the semester was over and after he looked over my grades he realized I had actually made a D. So if you want to risk accidentally being failed then take his class.
Dr.Burnett is a great person, he just ask for way too much, requires alot of work, and has to be exactly what he wants.
Dr. Burnett is a very interesting lecturer and takes the class content very seriously. He makes the content apply to real life, and you will learn a lot. One of the best classes and professors I've had.
Unless you are highly creative, enjoy working under impossible time restraints and vague guidelines, don't take this guy. He is nice and funny, but his teaching is awful. Dr. Burnett, Public Speaking is to build confidence and teach basic speaking techniques, it is not supposed to be a pro debate class with 20 minute debates. It's just crazy.
I was doing fine on all my presentations, and then on my last one he failed me. I could not get a hold of him to discuss what he thought I did wrong. No one can tell me what they think I did wrong either.
Took this class last semester and made an A. Hes a very good professor, and as long as you go to class and follow the rubric correctly, you will pass. He also gives extra credit opportunities and lets you rehearse your speeches with him before the due date which I strongly recommend so he can tell you what to work on. Highly recommend!!
He's confusing and the group project will probably kill your grade. Beware!
Each speech Is timed. Making the time is VERY important. He has a tendency to get off topic during lectures. He does show examples of how you should do your speech. MIMICK THAT!!! Lectures can be a little long due to his story telling but they tend to be humorous so it's not as bad to sit through. FOLLOW THE RUBRIC,MAKE THE TIME AND CITE YOUR WORK!
I was not a fan of his grading style. Whatever grade you get wont change if you ask him about it later. Dont make your presentations too complicated as he may not completely understand what you where talking about and MAY have an affect of your grade. The first speech is the hardest. past that the class is alright
Dr. Burnett is a tough teacher... so don't go in expecting this to be a blowoff class. My only complaint would be the group project. My grade should never be tied to some baseball player's who doesn't give a d*mn about his grade. The group project almooooost cost me my A. Regardless, super cool guy! I'd still recommend him and this class. :-)
Took his online Interpersonal Communication class. Class was not difficult but I did not enjoy him as a professor. He liked to insult my class via mass email, it was quite unprofessional. Not very clear at times, especially with his essays. Video project was a pain. Happy to be done with it.
All I have to say is go to class, be on time, and follow the rubric for every speech.
If you have any questions about an assignment dont bother asking him. He will just ask you if you read the instructions even know the questions didnt pertain to the instrustions. VERY RUDE!
Dr. Burnett is a really cool guy, but he won't hesitate to deduct points. If you miss more than 4 days of class, you automatically fail. Grading is usually from specific rubric, but still mildly inconsistent. Overall, he is a good teacher, but be prepared to actually have to try in speech (bcuz I bet you don't want to).
Dr. Burnett is very clear in what he expects. It's fairly an easy class. You do have to put your part to show up every class and do the speeches.
If you contest your grades at all, he becomes a very demeaning person. He was a horrible professor, and like other people have stated, he has a superiority complex. Public speaking should be about speaking well and organized, but he turns it into this specific, nonsensical process you have to conform to. Don't take him if you wish to improve at all
So here is my rundown on professor Burnett His style is ludicrous this is a public speaking class it's not very mandatory i am mad that i even have to take this class but this teacher proved my point this class is useless and the teacher solidifies that point perfectly How this professor is still working here is beyond me i am so dissatisfied
Dr. Burnett is the best! I dont understand how he is getting negative reviews on here, but I am overall very satisfied with his teaching style. He is hilarious during lecture and is very down to earth with students. The class can be difficult at times, but if you put in effort youll be fine. I would definitely take one of his classes again.
The professor seems like a really cool guy until he grades your speech. He is very specific on what he likes and doesn't like. I recommend taking a different professor.
Not clear with instructions on assignments and does not give good feedback.
Rude, arrogant, and acts superior in order to mask his inferiority. He is the last person that should be teaching a communication class as he demeaning and does not care to listen. Good communicators place as much emphasis on listening as they do talking.
Has to be the worst professor ever. Kept arguing with the class all the time, and didn't communicate very well despite being a communication professor. Kept changing things up a lot too at the last minute. Don't take this class with him! Or any of his classes. Such an awful professor.
Not a blow off class, show up put in an effort you will do well, take all extra credit he gives. Miss 3 classes FAIL. Email all your assignments to him and he will review them and send back notes before you submit for grade. No reason to fail you put in an effort, do extra credit, email assignments before due. I also thought he was funny and cool
Professor Burnett was understanding at times, but overall I feel he could have been more clear when it comes to directions. I also feel he nitpicked while grading, marking off for the slightest mistakes. Overall I did not enjoy the class and couldn't always find the information needed for the tests in the textbook or lectures. Find another course.
I took the class online and he took forever to respond to emails. We only used the text book at the end of the course. he followed the syllabus tho
Professor Burnett is a very tough grader and is not always clear on what he expects. He emails back fairly quickly. Overall a good professor.
If you are needed a speech class for your major, do not take this professor. He is incredibly rude when you ask for feedback, and he grades harder than any professor I have ever had. If something is not to his exact standards (which he does not make clear), you will fail. I would definitely choose another professor for this class.
Professor Burnett does a very poor job of communicating how he wants things done in his class. If you do the assignment based on how he told you to do it, he will email you saying you have done it wrong. His emails are very defensive and he is not professional in the slightest. The material is easy but his teaching style is awful.
He is an extremely tough grader that is not very cooperative.
Professor Burnett is not very clear in what he expects and does not respond to emails. He is very critical and not very understanding. Overall I do not recommend this course
Doctor Burnett is very cooperative and is very clear with what he expects and is an extremely inspirational person. Overall he is one of the best professors I have every and I would definitely take again.
For an interpersonal communications instructor, he is INCREDIBLY unclear in his communication in every single aspect of the course. He's unclear in what he expects from his students in particular assignments, he's unclear in the rubrics, his blackboard course is incredibly disorganized, and even his syllabus was unclear regarding the discussions.
Put in the time, you'll be fine.
Burnett is the most disrespectful person Ive ever met. If at all possible take another teacher. He is a very though grader and takes points for things clearly shown in the assignment submission. He raised his voice at me and when I spoke with the dean he played nice and received no repercussion. He is defensive, rude, surprised hes still there.
Dr. Burnett is a very thoughtful and respectful instructor. What I like about him is he will go out of his way to help you if you ask him. I know that I could have gotten a better grade but in all honesty I just added too many classes to my schedule that's on me. So if you want to be inspired and motivated and learn take him!!
Quick to reply and grade. Read - take notes and you'll do well. For a communications prof, he is a very poor communicator. Goes against things he's previously said and make you feel foolish for it. Replies to peer discussions due at midnight and he expects you to stay up till 11pm to reply, no respect for your time or schedule.
If you enjoy happiness do not take this class. This teacher grades horribly. He does not stick to a rubric and will give you a random grade that's most likely failing. He is not clear on instructions which makes the class way more difficult than it should be. With a different teacher, this class would be very enjoyable. Basically, STAY CLEAR.
Dont take this class. Pick ANY other teacher because this teacher will drive you crazy. Yes, this class could be easy but he makes it very difficult. He grades assignments randomly, doesn't stick to any rubric, and is rude. I took A&P, Stats, Gov, English, and Speech 1315 and I was most stressed and afraid I would fail this class.
Professor Burnett was very unclear with his grading criteria. When you look at the comments he makes on your speeches he never follows the rubrics and takes off points for things he never said you needed to include. He constantly would come to class late or in some instances not come at all.
Overall - good effort 0.2/15 I really do not know how he has any good ratings to be honest. Like are we talking about the same guy? I want to meet that guy instead! Maybe he will actually respond to my emails. Maybe he will stop being so rude. Maybe then I can be happy. The work isn't hard isn't even hard, it's just him. Please take someone else...
Was very unprofessional; there were several times where his grading was questionable. For much of this course he was also confused by his own assignments. If you take him it is crucial that you email him your work before submitting it. Overall this I had a very negative experience in this course and would never recommend him to anyone.
On the final group project, the directions were very unclear. Additionally, he took of several points because we had a section that he specified he required. When looking at the comments he said, "you could have done without the commercials because they were not very good". This is just one of many examples of poor ethics and grading. 0/10
He gets very defensive if you question his grading. This often leads to the grade remaining unchanged. Good luck trying to talk to him, he doesn't listen and gets confused by his own questions. Also, on the first day he says RMP is full of liars but it's not. He really is one of the most frustrating people I've met. Would never recommend. -15000/10
Not bad at all
He often gets very confused by his own lectures. He doesn't open quizzes until the same day they were due despite saying we have plenty of time. Very wordy doesn't answer the questions you ask. This class is very stressful. He often spaces out or ignores what the students are saying unless it's an assignment in class.
Very sweet guy, but a tough grader. Almost the whole class is group projects, and he requires equal participation, or the whole group fails. In group speeches, he'll require certain things within the speech, and then take off points when you include them. He's will work with you through things, but his "helping" will just make you more confused.
Lots of group projects and homework. Not clear with his instructions and will remove points that are not even stated in the rubric. I would recommend signing up for another professor.
I am taking the class currently and the professor is a pain in the neck. He is not clear on what to do, makes you watch over an hour long lectures when most other online classes do not require you to do this. He is also an extremely tough grader and is unclear about instructions. he gives 3 or more assignments a day while others give 2 at most.
Dr. Burnett's workload was heavy, but rightfully so since I took the winter mini-mester. I received A's on all my speeches, including the group speech, but it did take time away from my family over the holidays since there was work due every day except for Christmas & New Year's. He does take off points for small things, but overall not bad.
Professor Burnett is great, yes we have papers and group speech but we signed up for a speech class. Looking at these reviews, I see that students are getting mad about group work and speech assignments. It's a speech class we are going to have to do speeches. This class prepares you for the real world. He is very understanding and patient with us.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR! For a professor that teaches communication and speech courses, he sure doesn't know how to communicate very well. I had an issue during the 1st exam where it ended prematurely. I asked if I could retake the exam and he said it would be reopened for me. I would never be able to retake because he never reopened it.
I took Dr. Burnett SU23. I had to work for my grade but it was well worth it. A lot of students say that he's unfair and rude but I did not get that from him. He want the best for his students or at least that's what I felt. Without the videos, I would have been lost! Thank you Dr Burnett.
He grades very hard for a class that is supposed to be an intro class. I am a straight A student and I am barely scraping by with a B-.
I had taken this class online for 2020FA. Right during covid. I recently saw an email where the professor used a condescending tone towards a simple question I had asked. That reminded me of how difficult this prof was. I had problems with internet and his course structure was hard to follow online, just 1 hr+ videos. Also nitpicky on submissions.
I took this class in person. His lectures were funny, but he would get off topic. He would lecture using his slide shows, but the tests were mostly from the book. The tests were hard because he ran out of time and did not get to mention things that were on the tests. He said he would take it off, but he did not. There are a lot of projects.
Class was an easy A for me, but can definitely be a borderline A/B for a lot of people. He takes the course too seriously for what it is. Grades pretty easy for the most part but takes off points for stupid nit-picky things. He also thinks he's hilarious and will crack jokes that nobody laughs at. Great guy, just thinks his class is the super bowl
Due dates from a year ago, no organization in blackboard, condescending, and frankly lacked tools we needed for assignments. It was bad to the point where another department reached out to me. He is the epitome of academic elitist. As students we deserve better. The Irony was we were in a speech class.
Terrible organization, vague guidelines, snarky comments to questions, barely responds to emails, somehow this communications class was made as hard as possible for no reason. Do not take this professor. The rest of the reviews can correspond with this.
This teacher is absolutely god awful •not very helpful when contacted for questions •leaves snarky comments when asking for help and or leaving his own thoughts on assignments •not helpful at all when you actually are able to reach him •flat out has spelling errors and improper grammar in some instructions •personally felt unprofessional
He is extremely difficult to work with and does not communicate well. You can never get a hold of him and if you do, he seems unaware of his own class material and gives you incorrect information.
The professor can be hit-or-miss - confusing lectures, nitpicky grading, and a heavy workload. However, if you stay engaged and use study tools like unstuck ai, you can do well. Not the easiest class, but manageable with effort.
I highly recommend Dr. Burnett. A lot of people on here are mad because of the workload. I got an A because I ask lots of questions. I was in a group last year and they talked about this man so bad to where I almost went to somebody at the college and told for the disrespect that I heard in one of our virtual meetings. Take him!
This professor is a tough grader and is very nitpicky about everything, he hardly follows his own rubric and is incredibly rude.
He can be funny however; he is a harsh grader and is not always clear on what he wants done.
Having him as a professor felt like the school robbed me of my money
Old school! He is corny hip. Too old to be tryna keep up with this Gen. I liked him though. Cool old dude. Take him!
I personally feel that he is too tough of a grader and does not provide clear instructions or expectations. Most professors who do have high expectations tend to be detailed in what they are looking for. Unfortunately, I don't believe Dr. B is that way. I was able to receive a good grade in his class due to continuously asking for clarification.
Avoid this professor like the plague. For being a communications professor he lacks any abilities in the field. Multiple times will give you the wrong information. Had us write a cover letter and resume and said to look in chapter 8 which had no information whatsoever. Gives very little feedback and is very condescending at times. Take anyone else!
Avoid at all costs. Grades on points and not an average, 1500 total and 1400-1500 for an A. Takes off points for dumb things like including multiple slides for your subject. Awful with communication, never clear on expectations. was then tried making us redo it. Feedback like "do better" or "why did you write it this way?"
Rude and pessimistic. Lectures over 30 minutes long of him trying to figure out how to work his computer. Did not even try to motivate students. For a speech prof, communication was very unprofessional. He asked for an apology when I sent a very professional and respectful email. Final assignment provided ZERO textbook examples or guidance. AVOID!!
- chooses which emails he wants to reply to - little to no instruction on blackboard but expected to dot every I and cross every T - expects nothing but perfection prof takes the course so insanely serious for an online speech class, if you're half a percent away from the next letter grade don't expect it to get curved up don't waste your money
Workload was excessive for an introductory elective. When a professional and polite request was made for consideration to adjust the excessive number of assignments, the response was rude, and offensive. 0/10 do not take this class as an elective.
AVOID!!! He is a really tough grader. He doesn't follow his own rubric, and spends days, to even over a week, to respond to emails. He removed points off of my speech, and his response on that rubric was, "i don't know." As a person of perfection, it's frustrating. For those who aim for perfect grades, I'd honestly avoid this professor for peace.
When I look at my high school peers for Summer One, 2025 I can tell you based on my group project, they were lazy and they said a lot of horrible things about him!! I can tell you that every time I ask for his help he was there for me. Thank you, Dr. B.and I feel sorry for our high school students moving forward. Go Dr. B.!
Tough grader. Do NOT take his class! Instructions are not clear.
If you do an assignment for him to the best of your ability, but make a mistake, get ready to fail the assignment. If you email him about a grade you got he will blow you off because to him he does no wrong. Doesn't give good instructions on assignments so it is very tough to get a good grade. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This professor is god awful. Want a life outside of school? Good luck with this class. He posts 2-3 discussion posts weekly. Multiple quizzes weekly. Short essays and a paper weekly. Critiques everything you do and gives you barely to no feedback. He should be fired for how awful he is and banned from teaching ever again.
