Shes an awesome teacher take her for any section. Shes young understanding and very helpful.
This class is pretty tough. If you want an A, you will need to come to nearly every single class and you will need to submit your papers early for a proof read. The tests are very tough as well, but Dr. Utley is very nice and very helpful.
If you r a comm major this will be one of your most challenging classes. Dr. Utley is an AWESOME teacher though! Attendance & participation are important, however, she is flexible and very helpful. SUBMIT YOU PAPERS FOR HER TO PROOFREAD(she does have a deadline tho), fix what she tells you to fix and you'll be fine. overall very interesting class.
If your interested in hip-hop at all, its a great class all you have to do is read, and the reading is very interested, only a couple of journal writings and the test are take home which you use your notes from class to take, highly recommended
Took her for Hip Hop criticism and she is an excellent professor. This class requires a LOT of reading, but it is worth it. The midterm is a take home essay, there is a cumulative in class final and and a final paper. As long as you come to class, ask questions if you are confused, and take good notes, you will do fine.
Attendance is a must for this class. She did not do a good job spreading out the work for this class. The last month of the semester we had something major due or some sort of quiz. Here it is a week before finals and we do not have half of our points counted for (300 out of 600). Combines this class with hip hop which got to be annoying. Helpful!
You may think Hip Hop is easy, but this class is not for the faint of heart. Don't take it if you are looking for an "Easy A." Dr. Utley is funny, and the class is challenging but she WANTS you to do well and gives you all the tools needed to succeed. She was very organized, unlike another poster claims. Just come to class every day, like U should!
GREAT PROFESSOR! SHE IS NOT EASY, BUT YOU WILL LEARN ALOT. I REALLY ENJOYED THE CLASS. SHE IS HELPFUL, CLEAR, AND ORGANIZED. YOU NEED TO ATTEND CLASS BECAUSE SHE HAS THESE RANDOM "POINT DAYS" BUT THEY WILL HELP IN THE LONG RUN. READ READ READ!!!!!!
I ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED HER CLASS. SHE REALLY MAKES YOU THINK & CHALLENGE YOURSELF. THIS CLASS IS NOT AN "EASY A," YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO HAVE TO WORK FOR IT, BUT IN THE PROCESS YOU WILL LOVE IT. AND THE VIDEOS THAT WE WATCHED WERE HILARIOUS/MEANINGFUL IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE COURSE THEMES. YEAH, ITS ALOT OF READING BUT THE ARTICLES ARE INTERESTING!
hip hop crit was great and so far Dr. Utley is my favorite female teacher for the comm department. she is great and extremely helpful/caring. she loves her job and is great at it. YES the class can be difficult, but Dr. Utley is ALWAYS willing to help you improve & give excellent advice. so dont feel overwhelmed, she has your back!
Dr. Utley is one of the greatest professors at CSULB. she will make u work for your grade, however she is very willing to help all of her students. Do not miss a day of class, you will regret it! Take her for any section. She's young, smart, and a very caring person.
This professor is horrible - one of the most one-sided people I've ever met. If you like to have a VERY slanted liberal view constantly shoved down your throat, than take her. I cannot understand how her teaching is allowed at a state school. She has a huge chip on each shoulder and wants students to constantly pat her on the back.
This class is VERY hard and has a HUGE workload. Total of 5 essays, speech, midterm, cumulative final, uses Turnitin, "in class assignments" worth 10 pts that take you 45-1 hr to complete (you usually have to finish it at home). Nothing against Dr. Utley personally, but she is a very demanding teacher!
Yes, you will work hard but you will learn so much. Dr. Utley is very intelligent. She is clear and so helpful. Take her if you really want to learn! Excellent class.
She is a very nice young teacher... she was really helpful but her class is not the easiest. I got an A but it was because i made sure i followed directions and worked hard. i learned so much from her. she is open minded and thinks out the box , if you dont then you wont get it.
I was extremely excited for this course. She is a great professor in terms of the research, however as far as helping students, and giving feedback. SHE SUCKS! her "Grown Folks Policy" gives her an excuse not to help students. Just go to class, take notes, and do the work and you'll pass, but if you want professor feedback DONT COUNT ON IT.
Yes she is a hard teacher. She makes you work every day for your grade. But she is very helpful if you don't understand something just ask her. The students that don't like her don't ask her for help and just think they can skate though the class without really doing anything. You have to work hard to get the grade you want
Dr. Utley is great! Don't be fooled by biased opinions! Many complain, but are the same students that are lazy, close minded, and not willing to think outside of the box. You learn many things in her classes and she prepares you for the open mind you need in this world. I'm thankful I took her classes. Among CSULB's best hands down!
Dr. Utley is VERY challenging. She's a genius when it comes to rhetoric. It almost makes her intimidating--but don't be! She's very caring and helpful. Pay attention in her class, and be prepared to work. If she see's that you are working hard, she'll try to bump up your grade at the end of the semester--but you have to earn it!
Rather boring and pretends she knows everything. More of a con than genuine.
This class was interesting to attend and I enjoyed the lectures, however her tests (although online and open note) were impossible even when taken as a group. Her lecture contradicts the text book making the tests harder because you never know which answer is correct because she switches it up every time.
Utley definately knows a lot about his subject. Her lectures are fun and very informative. However when it comes to her test, shes slightly ridiculous. The tests are open note tests but she makes them near impossible, putting in multiple correct answers and making the student choose the BEST answer. Otherwise, class was extremely fun.
Her lectures are really interesting. Usually the classes you are interested in are the ones you receive good grades in. NOT THE CASE W/ DR. UTLEY! I'm a good student, only missed 1 lecture all semester.I worked hard, studied, participated in discussions and barely got a C in this class. crazy workload. dnt take if you want an easy A. or an easy C.
This class was super interesting but the work load was a lot. Learned a lot from this class and Dr. Utley has been one of the greatest professors in the department.
I found Utley to be very passive aggressive. She's a good teacher of the material, but I found myself not even wanting to ask her questions because of the condescending and annoyed tone of voice I would get in return. For that reason, I will never take one of her classes again.
TA was absolutely horrible & rude. communication w/this professor is mere impossible. She is never in her office.won't return emails tests are ridiculous. take w/groups, youre only chance. "best" answer is her opinion (not the actual book). there will be ?'s about things you never even heard of, its just stupid how this class still exists.
Absolutely loved her class. Hands down one of my favorite professors in the comm department at CSULB. Her intelligence is a bit intimidating, but she is super helpful. She is a difficult grader but she is AMAZING at explaining the hard material in class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she does test about examples used in class.
This was definitely the hardest class I have ever taken at the University. She seems like she's cool at first but very hard to work understand the material. Do not take her unless you want to do an insane amount of work throughout the semester.. Never again :(
Dr.Utley is one of the toughest professors I've ever had but don't let that fool you. She's extremely helpful and knows what she's doing she will push you to do the best you can do. If you fail it's because you didn't try. I absolutely love her and recommend her. She breaks down the huge paper very comm major has to write. She s a published author
so unhelpful. It was a drag even emailing her. She would act like I was asking her to donate a kidney. She is stingy with her office hours. Asked me to leave once so she can go and get lunch. I wouldnt take her ever.
This is one of the toughest core classes in the program regardless of the instructor, but Dr. Utley made it manageable with her clear directions on all of the papers. As long as you follow her criteria, you'll succeed in the course. I was able to meet with her throughout the semester and she was friendly and extremely helpful. Great professor!
Online class with only 3 papers and a couple exams, so not much room for error. The trick is to get feedback BEFORE papers are due to pass. No matter how good of a writer you think you are, making some office appointments are the key to passing. 30 mins a week or so beats sitting through any class if you ask me.
Dr. Utley is a great professor. She takes attendance daily so you need to show up to class. I loved how specific she was on rubrics/grading which leaves little room to mess up. Follow the rubric and you will get a good grade on the papers. Also has interesting topics and readings incorporated. She has things graded for you in less than 24 hours.
She's a solid professor. She's funny and really knows how to relate the communications studies with real life scenarios! She's very tech savvy so a lot of her stuff is online and is rarely on paper. She's one of the best professors at LB!
Dr. Utley was my favorite this semester. She relates the lectures to real life stuff and is very funny. Majority of stuff is done online. Attendance is important so do not skip class. This is one of those classes that you actually look forward to going to.
All of her test questions are found on quiz lets online. Attendance is mandatory as it counts for a big portion of your grade. Must take notes since they are not posted online. Overall easy A.
this class was pretty easy attendance matters a lot towards your grade so don't skip because you can only miss 21 points in the class to keep an A. there is also an activity section. 3 tests, 1 presentation, 4 assignments, 1 group presentation, and 20 points of clicker q's. tests challenging but online. some answers on quizlet. TAKE NOTES.
not much in your grade/online tests/read to pass but it's so easy to read because it's everyday things/easy lectures/doesn't upload lectures/engaging lectures/the lecture before an exam is usually a guest speaker/wednesdays are exam days no class/clear powerpoint doesn't get distracted/one big graded assignment per exam (about 4)
not much in your grade/online tests/read to pass but it's so easy to read not that boring/easy lectures/doesn't upload lectures/engaging lectures/the lecture before an exam is usually a guest speaker/wednesdays are exam days so no big lecture class/clear powerpoint doesn't get distracted/one big graded assignment per exam (about 4)
Heavy lecturer, she doesn't grade everything her TA does. She's pretty straight up in her lectures, assignments were relatively easy. She'd do iclicker questions in class for attendance.
Dr. Utley is so cool but she makes you respect her. I really enjoyed the material of the class. It's simple enough if you keep up with lectures and browse through the book. Make sure you come to class cus she takes attendance through iClicker questions. She also brings in cool guest speakers sometimes.
Did not like this class. Forces you to come to class by using clicker questions. Will waste lecture time waiting for someone to answer her questions (literally stands there for 5 mins) she could easily answer herself. 3 exams made up of 50 random questions from the textbook that she gives 1 hour to complete. Regret taking this class with her.
She is very hip and entertaining, but her policy on attendance was a little much. She uses CourseKey and you have to check in by the start of class and answer all the questions during the class to get attendance for that day. If you go to the bathroom and miss one question you don't get any points. Pay attention to what she says in class for tests.
It's not her that does the grading, but the section facilitator that does. Other than that, she's amazing, lots of laughs and goofs, along with some good life lessons. No cumulative exams, though they are tough and if you don't read or take notes, you're done for. There was a speech and group skit, too.
Never felt like this was an interpersonal class. She always found a way to make the lesson political and likes to push her opinions. The section that you go to is entirely dependent on how cool your grad student prof is. Uses clicker questions for attendance. Dumbest thing ever.
I was intimidated at first, but once I applied myself and really paid attention to lectures and the style of written material, I was able to ask her questions without fear. This is an amazing class and I would recommend it to everyone and anyone! Dr Utley is very dedicated to her students and her study. Tests are fair. Papers are hard.
Dr. Utley class was fun to attend. She was funny and very nice. She does take attendance so it is mandatory but the class is fun she makes it interesting, and the GAs are always there to help. There are small quizzes but its during lecture and if you attended the previous lecture its easy points. Would definitely retake the class!!
Althoigh Dr. Ebony Utley is well learned in pop culture, she certainly is narcisstic and an overacheiver. Materials reviewed in course was informative but her expectations for completing Padlet assignments was unrealistic. We mever really truly knew what she expected with the fluctuation with comments once complete. Glad its almost over !!!
You take clicker questions almost class time, they are easy if you did the reading. Points for attendance. Tests are straight forward and you are allowed to use your notes and the textbook on them and you take them online. 3 tests, 1 speech, 1 group role play activity, and 1 paper. Do the work and put effort and you will do good.
Lectures were always fun. Iclicker quizzes are easy if you do the reading. Assignments are doable, so are the tests. 3 tests, non cumulative. no midterm or 'final'.
Knows her stuff. Lectures are entertaining. Quizzes are easy but show up to big lectures so you can actually get points for them
Dr. Utley is a great professor and is care about what she expects. The class is really straight forward, there is 1 speech, 1 group role-play, 1 essay, and 4 online exams. Attendance is not mandatory for the lecture but you will miss out on the quiz points which will add up at the end of the semester.
Show up to class for quiz points , lectures are interesting because she makes them enjoyable! Interacts with the students and actually tries to answer their questions .
She is an over-educated and pretentious professor that spends more time in lectures advertising for her books on infidelity and her dubious app "StayGo" which is designed to help users decide whether or not their romantic relationship is worth saving. When she's not shamelessly hocking her books and app, she's an okay lecturer. Tests are easy.
Worst professor! No extra credits at all and papers are hard!!! Will not take her again. Never!
The textbook is Reflect and Relate 4th edition and you can find the free link online in a reddit thread. Fr don't buy the book the free one is legit plus you never use the book anyway. The tests are okay you can look up some answers on quizlet. Utley is a good professor but sometimes the lectures are boring.
Took her in Fall. Online book that was very cheap. There is quiz every week based on the reading which is very easy. The quiz was on the app called reef and you could use the book. 3 tests which were online. Lectures were entertaining and funny. There was a speech and group role play during activity and an easy reflection essay.
5 tests and 5 padlet assignments. The lectures and sections are well organized and you can finish this class the first week of the semester with little effort. The problem is they did not give clear directions for the padlet assignment. The padlet is the difference between an A and a B and they failed making a clear grading guideline.
Her class consists of 5 exams and 5 padlets. Her tests are hard and at first it is hard to understand what she wants in the padlet. If you follow the example on her instructors it will get you a B on the padlets. I took 110 with her thinking this class was the same but i was wrong. The course is intersting but very difficult.
Overall just not a very good Professor I think she tries her best but does not really explain directions too well. 5 tests and 5 padlets. The padlet directions were hard to understand and she graded them tough. The test questions were pretty difficult you definitely need to read. Some of the reading were optional but they would show up on tests.
Ive taken Professor Utley for lower division classes before and did well. I think she just started to do upper division and maybe is trying a little too hard. The padlets she assigned seemed to be a problem for everyone the whole semester. The tests (25 questions) were worded in a way where you have to look up certain vocabulary to understand them
Great professor, she leaves no room for negotiation its her way or the highway; activity teachers change from each semester so good luck choosing a good one; 3 midterms noncumulative open book open note, textbook doesnt help so just search answers on quizlet; 3 iClicker questions abt reading every week count as attendance; 1 speech 1 group projects
She comes off as condescending and commands your respect for her. Shes constantly self plugging her books, yoga, and other activities. Id take comm 130 or comm 110 with another professor. Her beachboard exams are worded so that youll be confused. Dont take her class.
Easy class, the harder part is the tests she gives you have 3 question quizzes every lecture that are relativity easy. She gives 2 extra quizzes at the end of the semester so you can be able to get the most points possible. In class yoga exercises, she invites everyone to her yoga studio. Overall an amazing professor.
Course was mostly based on the activity section, but there were really easy quizzes at the start of the lectures for points. They make you buy a relatively cheap online book. There were 3 exams that were online and open book. She's a pretty chill professor and I enjoyed going to her lectures.
I dropped out because I felt her tests were biased. Exams are worded with extreme vagueness. IF you are analytical or read carefully, I would not recommend her comm course. She also has her own (I think questionable) definitions of many words that don't necessarily mean what she thinks they do on exams, but she treats them like dictionary truth.
Utley is very sweet and funny but also has a very stern and confident side. You'll like her class. Lots of class participation in her lecture - she asks a lot of questions and has online quizzes and polls to take and shows the results in class. 1.5-minute easy quiz at the start of every lecture. Very open and respectful to all students.
She's a good professor. The class consists of reading quizzes due every week, 3 exams, and 3 assignments that are graded by your activity leader. The exams aren't that hard as long as you read the chapters. Lecture isn't mandatory, but activity is
This class was fairly easy but she offers no room for negotiation or empathy under any circumstances. There were things that were out of my control and I still received penalty for it.
Honestly shes just an amazing teacher all around she gets down to the point there was a couple of assignments regarding the script a paper but theyre all extremely easy to accomplish you have a couple exams but theyre not too hard theyre all multiple questions overall shes just a really good teacher Just show up to the class and do the hw
Dr. Utley is great and her class is very easy. You can either choose to attend lecture and not open the textbook once, or read the chapters thoroughly and not attend lecture. Either one works. Majority of your grade comes from the lab section, so participate well and pay attention. Very easy class, a lot of it is common sense.
I rarely went to lecture, but always read the textbook. Just try on all of the activity assignments, use common sense and you'll get a good grade. Reading quizzes every week. She's a nice, funny professor. However, I do feel as though her exams were worded in a confusing manner (questions seem like they can have multiple right answers).
Absolutely DO NOT take her. You can clarify 1,000 times on discussion posts and she will still ask you for further clarification. I have had to redo every single discussion post and video upload in the class (along with other classmates who she's made redo their work).Worst experience I have truly ever had with a prof.
Dr. Utley was one of my favorite professors. She makes class fun and helps you to understand the material. I would definitely recommend to any one. She is always there to help you.
Dr. Utley's class is interesting, but the activity section is what makes up most of your grade. Her class lectures aren't mandatory to attend. Quizzes are 3 questions each and exams are pretty reasonable. The textbook is required, but can be found online for free.
Dr. Utley's lectures weren't mandatory (the activity sessions are though), however, the discussions we had in each one were worth the attendance. She also is respectful and open-minded to diverse thinking.
I had a 79.57% and she would not round up my grade. It was clear her grading process but still are you kidding me. I got 183/230 points and I need 184/230 points. I forgot to do one reading quiz(you take them before the lecture and you have one minute to complete) and that ultimately decided my grade. BTW this was the FIRST C I have EVER gotten.
Threw a fit when a few of her students emailed her asking to round grades despite her "telling everyone not to" (mind you, in a lecture of 150+ students there are bound to be absent/not listening students) and decided not to round grades for ANY of her students. Petty and unnecessary; obviously doesn't care about her students.
I liked this class except the testing format was not my favorite. You can't review questions and have to submit them before moving onto the next. The weekly quizzes were also graded out of 3 so if you missed one question, you were already down to a 66.67%. Other than that, it was a pretty easy and informative class.
The class is fine. Its just her that makes it more difficult than it should be. Tests and lectures have nothing in common. Tests consist of situational questions which can be pretty open to be honest, but she makes sure its her answer is ALWAYS correct.
Dr. Utley has a clear grading criteria, however, her exams are quite different from the textbook and the lecture. Questions on exams are very open-ended which makes it difficult to study. The activity section is mandatory to attend for points towards your grade.
I highly recommend you take Dr. Utley! I genuinely learned so much from her class, her lectures are very easy to follow and the exams are pretty easy as long as you take decent notes. The lectures are not mandatory to attend, but the activity is. Having the book helps ALOT (you can find a free pdf). There are 3 exams 3 easy assignments total.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Utley is an amazing professor, she's so sweet. It was 3 exams all multiple choice, 3 big projects that really weren't difficult at all, and 11 quizzes. The quizzes can make or break your grade, you have 60 seconds to answer 3 multiple choice questions about the reading. I would definitely take her again.
Her tests are very situational, pay attention to the lecture and maybe skim the textbook chapters and you'll be fine. USE ALL THE RESOURCES you can think of and you'll be fine. No hw, a few group projects, 1 speech, 3 exams. Gl.
I am taking this class right now and I am really enjoying it! The lectures are optional, but the activity session for the course is mandatory. I find the lectures to be very interesting, and the professor is so sweet.
I love this professor! Her lectures are detailed and organized and never fail to keep me interested. She is so respectful to everyone and shows true care and passion for everyone and for what she does. No matter who you are, you will feel seen and heard with this professor.
Attendance wasn't mandatory for lecture, but was for the corresponding activity session (which wasn't bad at all as well). Dr. Utley is a very kind and well-spoken professor, and she made it very easy to understand the topics at hand. The class overall was very simple, as long as you put in the effort to do your work.
great professor! she is a great lecturer as well. attendance wasn't mandatory for lecture, but it was graded for the activity section. there are a few activities throughout the semester, 3 exams, and weekly quizzes. do the quizzes!! they are kinda scary since you have a minute to complete it but just use common sense and you'll be good.
Dr. Utley's main lectures were not mandatory; however, the activity sessions are mandatory. The reading quizzes will make or break your grade so try to read the assigned chapters and understand the content. There were three major assignments which consisted of a speech, group project, and video reflection. Overall, great class.
The professor is very nice and awesome. There is not much homework only quizzes that are true or false. Textbook is needed and quizzes are based on lecture and textbook. The class is based on theses assignments: 3 exams, a group project, speech, and reflection. Class is overall very useful and interesting and not once boring.
this class was one of the best if taken so far. the professor and GA are amazing and kind. The lectures are straightforward and easy to understand. Three big tests and one 3 question quiz each week, all of which as simple if you study your notes and the reading. 3 activity assignments that are pretty easy. highly recommend!!
Not great. COMM110 is itself a kind of lame class and the fact that the lecture/book content doesn't match up with the exams here is infuriating. The activity section is also mandatory and doesn't really add much to the class as a whole. Not that many assignments in this class though, so while good, there's also less room for error.
I was doing fine in this class with an A+, until one of my final projects had a technical difficulty going through on Canvas. Professor was not understanding, and refused to take my assignment, which dropped my grade to a C. Also, although the activity portion is mandatory to attend, you don't learn anything. Three projects and a quiz every week.
Extremely boring and useless lectures, boring professor overall. She was not understanding about technology issues at all and failed students because of it. Assignments were overall useless and not very relevant to the course. However the class overall wasn't too hard it consists of weekly quizzes, a couple projects and 3 online exams.
Nice class, but exams were random. 3 exams all open note & noncumulative (including final). You have to be able to look for the information quickly to answer the questions. 3 easy assignments (speech, role play, reflection video) and weekly quizzes. Lecture interesting when she has some stories related to the content. Strict deadlines.
SO EASY! As long as u followed her directions on the assignments, u will definitely get an A! There were 3 exams that were online & weekly 3-question quizzes during lecture. Attending activity is taken for points, but lecture was not mandatory. The 3 assignments (speech, role play, and reflection video) were graded by your activity leader.
Says attendance is not mandatory but after class she would give participation points. Has 1 paper due at the end, about 4 quizzes in the semester. Does not have a clear grading scale. Most assignments are P/F. She is a though grader and unclear with instructions. Work was assigned Monday and was due Wednesday by 3pm.
Tons of small assignments, discussion posts, and 3 quizzes that are averagely challenging, attendance is required. Final is an essay that is anonymous and has confusing criteria.
So many assignments, a really tough grader will make you redo assignments, attendance and participation are a part of your grade, a camera is required, fully an ENTREPRENEURSHIP class, not a communications class. No final exam but 2 presentations that are 2 minutes each, confusing criteria and will make you redo them.
Do NOT take her class. One of the worst professors I've ever had. Her grading scale makes absolutely no sense and acts like her class is the end all, be all. A really difficult grader and even more difficult professor to deal with.
Very unclear for what she wants exactly for each assignment; she will give you a prompt and then you have to go to extreme detail without her specifying or you will not get a good grade. Her instruction and feedback is awful and I would not recommend her.
Be prepared to read & have many assignments. Professor Utley gives unclear instructions and no examples & then emails the class expressing her disappointment when students struggle to understand. Her lessons and textbook do not help with the assignments. Most assignments are only 1 point but will give no credit if they do not meet her standards.
COMM 334 had a good clear structure to follow. As long as you put in effort and detail, you will do well in the online course. Professor gives feedback, so make sure to follow through on what is suggested. Asides from this, the course was engaging. I had a good time taking Professor Utley's course, there is room for flexibility though.
I wouldn't recommend this professor. Assignments are only worth one point with no chance to make up missed work. She's sarcastic, inflexible, and unapproachable. Expectations are unrealistic, deadlines fall mid-day, and communication is poor. This class caused more stress than it was worth.
Online class attendance and cameras on is usually mandatory. Assignments are worth 1 point so it's quite easy to miss one assignment and drop your grade by a large percentage. No extra credit, no late assignments, no flexibility at all. Prof is quite sarcastic as others have stated.
Don't take this professor if you want your emails read!! She's horrible i truly didn't enjoy my time in her class one bit.
