I had her class for Math 124 and 125. She never finished her examples. If you learn through examples like me, try to get a different teacher. She is nice and I know she was trying but she is not helpful with learning this material. Teach yourself through the textbook.
if you try to review her metrial after class, you will find many notes are useless and hard to follow. It is said that her 124 and 125 is easy, but I got to say that her 126 is hard to get a very high score. She try to control the average, therefore in her midterms you will always bump into some hard problems. Recommend Alexandra Nichifor's lectur
If you like math, her lecture is your choice.
This class, for me, was MUCH harder than 124 and 125. Her examples aren't that great and quiz sections were not very helpful either. I was never really able to wrap my head around the concepts covered in this class and barely passed.
NOT RECOMMEND. Her lectures are not clear, and very careless with her students. She doesn't post all the answers of homework. If u want challenging, this is her.
Exams are definitely harder than other 126 profs. Lectures were not the best, sometimes hard to follow and never finished the examples she says she will. Much more helpful in office hours than in lecture. I found this class harder than 124/125
She is very clear and concerned about explaining things well in her lectures.
If you do the work and study for the tests, the class is very doable- the professor is helpful and the expectations on exams are well established. Be careful not to fall behind on the material. Took this class straight out of high school using AP credit, and had no trouble.
She is really nice and seems to know a lot about her topics. Lectures are not all that bad but I will say her midterms are very difficult and I don't think she cares much about student success rates.
Pretty good. She is pretty clear about every step she takes when she does examples. However, some lectures she neglected to mention at the start what she would be covering, so it was a bit difficult following. Tests are kind of difficult, but you get a cheat sheet so no complaints there. The grading is ok. Not too harsh or too lenient.
Such a great Math professor!!! Absolutely enjoyed her class. She has the cutest way of explaining abstract things and her explanations do stick with you. Midterms are not easy but definitely resonable. Work hard and you will succeed!!
Bekyel will teach you all the material that needs to be taught. She will also give you a lot of basic examples so you understand. Homework is more difficult than her examples, and her tests are harder than her examples and the homework. Can be ditsy. You have to do a lot of self study and make study buddies if you want to succeed with her.
She is a pleasure to be around. Very helpful if you go to her office hours. Class is not easy, but she makes the most of it with examples and a (dry) sense of humor.
Bekyel's lectures makes concepts more confusing than it should be. Her midterms are unreasonably hard, even if you understand the material, she will put curveballs in the midterm that you've never seen/practiced before. Most professor's makes the midterm easier than the hw, but she makes it harder. Do not recommend her AT ALL.
Sure, she's a nice person, but that is not a qualification for a job as a professor. She makes everything unnecessarily difficult by solving problems in the most roundabout way and not even explaining why. Her tests are more difficult than anything she does in class. She should not be teaching.
Great teacher but bad lecturer. One on one conversations with her are great, but lectures are almost useless. Examples are slowly performed and sometimes uncompleted. And her quiz sections are unorganized. But she is a very nice professor, highly experienced and knows what she is talking about. Overall, she seems to have a better class than others.
Bekyel tries to explain concepts through examples, but her examples are sometimes confusing. Go to her lectures, practice all types of problems that she demonstrated then you can easily ace this class like me!
I would not recommend her. Confusing lectures, hard tests, hard quizzes. None of her examples come up on the tests. She is great person to talk to though. She should rather be a counselor.
Her explanations step-by-step are super clear and detailed! She loves and understands math, so it is interesting for me to listen to her! Also, math in general requires a lot of self-study and patience, and it is important to get her "simple examples" (as some other comments say) to move to harder ones.
Absolutely sweet professor, but not the best at teaching math. I wish I took another professor. Avoid her if you can, especially if you're new to the course. Her lectures are confusing and you're better off asking the TA/self studying the material rather than going to lectures.
Her explanations are clear, and the grading policy is fair. Also she drops out the lowest grade for the quizzes, worksheets, and hw. I've got much better grade for this class than for Math 124, which I took with other professor. Attend the lectures, do the hw, do practice exams, and you should be good. Good luck!
her notes is really IMPORTANT!!! read and review all her notes are helpful for midterms and final!! Although her writes lots of "extra" words, when you get review, it is really useful for thinking! I really like her class! She is nice too~
Really great teacher! She makes sure you are prepared for your exams. She is easy to follow and really nice. The only negative thing is that she tends to write down EVERYTHING that comes to her mind, but she does take really good notes!
GREAT professor! I didn't have to read the textbook once through out the quarter because she was very detailed and clear in her lectures. The only down side is that her tests are incredibly difficult (which doesn't matter much since it shows in the curve). Highly recommended!!
Horrible professor. Had a 4.0 in class all the way up until the final (based off of me teaching the concepts to myself) and Ebru wrote an extremely terrible final exam that was way off topic. She excluded huge concepts we spent weeks on, and tested over half the test questions on minuscule details. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
She is honestly really awful. The language barrier is enough that she doesn't really understand what you are asking. She doesn't go over sections and then puts them on the test.
Great professor. The class itself is really easy and Ebru just takes everything a step further and dumbs it down for you. Im not the smartest kid and I got a 4.0. Midterms were super easy, you just got put forth the effort and study. Final was pretty hard, don't underestimate it.
I adore this professor. She is enthusiastic with a mild yet engaging sense of humor, and she's always so cute about it! She shows care for her students and gives clear, concrete examples to explain concepts. Her tests were always challenging, but certainly not unreasonable. I like that she has high expectations without being intimidating or mean.
If you've taken math up to Algebra 2 in the past, the concepts should be mainly review. After making it to the first couple weeks of class, I really only went whenever I wanted a refresher. She gives many examples but the homework is extremely time consuming. Her second midterm was also unreasonably hard for the material covered.
Wonderful lady! She is so sweet and has a way of being so funny and entertaining during lectures. Yes, her midterms are more difficult than many of the other profs but she gives you access to all her previous midterms so if you are willing to put in the effort you will do well. I would love to take another class with her!
Only took two calculus classes at UW, but was the better one I had. Explains material well most of the time and posts gobs of supplementary on her website. Tests are extremely difficult, but are very generous with partial credit.
Good instructor, very clear. Uses dual overheads, which upsets me as someone who likes having computerized notes to print and write on. Getting down all the notes requires a lot of focus in lecture. Unless you like asking questions, I wouldn't bother going to non-exam quiz sections, your time is probably better spent practicing out of the book.
Great, friendly professor.
This professor is hard to understand during lecture. She goes over fairly easy examples during class, and then puts extremely hard ones on the exam. She does not prepare the class well for exams, and when the mean score for a midterm was a D, she did not curve it. Overall unfair compared to other math professors.
The second midterm was ridiculously hard because the problems were extremely different than the examples she gave in class. The curve is not helpful either. I would take it with another prof if I could unless you're willing to accept an average grade of 3.0-3.3.
She makes this class much more difficult than it needs to be and the tests are ridiculously hard. Avoid taking it with her at all costs and try to get with another proffessor.
Took her class during Autumn 2013. Her first time teaching MATH 111, and she teaches the simplest examples in lecture and gives easy quizzes. Midterms are extremely hard and her final was hard. She never finishes her examples from lecture. My overall percentage was in the 60s and I still had above a 2.0. Overall, she's okay.
Professor Ebru is very friendly and helpful. Although sometimes she can be a little ambiguous, mostly she is pretty clear throughout the lecture. This class was hard as hell though. Don't take it unless you're going to major in mathematics.
I thought her math 112 class was easier than her 111 class. Quizzes are always very easy, homework is hard and time consuming, and midterms and final were really hard and tricky. Do as many practice problems as you can in preparation for the tests. class was curved so even with a Midterm score of 50% I got above average
I don't recommend taking her class for math112. Her lectures are easy to understand but judging from the first midterm we took today, it's significantly more difficult and had problems that don't resemble questions from previous exams. No Bueno
DO NOT TAKE CLASSES FROM HER! The examples she gives in class and on homework assignments(which by the way are excessively long) are super easy but then her tests are extremely difficult with super hard questions and you don't even have the time to finish. Again, AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.
Bekyel is clear in her examples during lecture. Her quizzes and HW, which seem to be the same regardless of the professor you choose, are easy. However, that's where the pros of taking a class with her end. Her first midterm during Winter 2014 was not similar to last year's midterm, which she told us to use to study. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES.
Bombed her midterm (Most of the students did) Her class examples and homework are super easy compared to her tests & quizzes. I went to talk to her about my grade and she was very rude and said there was no way I could pass her class. It seemed like she was out to get us giving us 2 page quizzes and only 10 min. I would NEVER take her again.
She is really passionate about mathematics and business calculus. MATH 112 is required for business school at UW. Compared to MATH 124, it is more like applied calculus. Material is not that hard, just calculus I stuff. Eburu is great lecturer and she always give clear explanations. 4-5 quizzes and 3 midterms. One midterm is harder but do-able.
Test prep doesn't cover the actual test material. Can't understand half of what she says in lecture.
HW & Lectures helped most. Tends to be rude at genuine (ez) questions frm students (expects you to know already). Makes many mistakes during lecture (a lot). M1 hard - misled every1. M2 ez - straight to pt. Overall, I understood most of the stuff. Wouldn't recommend if you have a hard time with math already (fast pace). Good luck
Ebru got her PhD from Brown; she is smart. However, she is not the best professor. She goes super fast in class, so you just copy down notes without absorbing anything she's saying. She makes lots of small mathematical errors on in class examples and on answer keys as well. Her tests are LONG and hard, and she has no sympathynever gives pts back.
I had to teach myself and work very hard in her class to end up still not doing well. I had never struggled in math before, but she made everything very difficult. Hard to understand her in lecture and very rude towards students. Would certainly never take a class from her again.
Lectures and homework were straightforward. She told us the first midterm would be extremely similar to last year's midterm but it was MUCH harder. Second midterm was okay, but final was also hard. As someone who did well in AP Calc in HS, I thought this class was going to be easy, but it was much harder than it should've. Avoid her if you can!!
I had Ebru for 111 & 112 & dreaded both classes. I'm good at math so I had no difficulty w the class, but if it's not your strong suit, you will need help. She also was stubborn. Lecture got behind the HW & she wouldn't listen to us, so we got graded on assignments we hadn't learned how to do yet. If you have a choice of profs, don't take her.
Is passionate about the content but does not always come across clearly. Works very quickly during instruction and questions are answered with repeats of prior instructions. Overall the TA was more clear than the professor for the course.
She is the worst math teacher I have come across. She messes up frequently during her lectures and her homework assignments are ridiculously hard.
She skips steps and messes up often when working through problems during lecture. The WebAssign homework is lengthy and 20x more difficult than what she teaches in lecture. Expect a majority of your time to be spent on WebAssign homework. Class average on the 1st midterm was an F (20/50), as well as a majority of the weekly quizzes so far.
She is the least helpful math teacher I have ever had. I learn more in quiz section then I do going to lecture.
Worst math professor at UW. She does not teach you at all. Her lectures do not make any sense and do not match the webassign homework. She sometimes gives out 3 chapters of homework out at once all due on the same day while other professors do 1 chapter due at a time. A lot better off learning the material on your own. She messes up way too much.
I think I was very lucky to have her as my Math 328 teacher because math 328 is a very hard class. The topic itself is already bloody hell difficult but she tried her best to make student understand everything. The most important thing is that her office hour is very very useful and she is very patient. As long as you try your best you will succeed
Fall2015 Math 120, Homework: is usually one chapter due every tues and thurs. One time there was three chapters due where there would usually be one. that was the tues before a thurs. midterm. Her lectures most usually have to do with the hmk. She tells you what kind of problems to expect on the midterm.
This professor is awful by far the worst math professor I have had. She gets simple math wrong all the time in class and doest care at all. The tests and HW are hard and she doesn't teach them in class. She frequently leaves out information that is necessary to do homework. The tests are not at all like the HW but similar to practice midterms.
Literally decided to rate her in the middle for studying my exam. I already know I'm going to fail. Had to ask my high school math teacher for help the entire quarter.
Her lectures are in no way indicative of what you can expect from WebAssign. IF her lectures are easy to understand, then it's not what the homework will look like. Tests are extremely difficult. Only real help I got was from the Math Study Center.
TEST ARE HORRIBLE! Lectures don't match the homework, and the exams she gives are harder than all other professors. If you go to office hours you'll have a chance though.
She's the worst instructor I've ever had. Lectures are basically useless, homework is almost unrelated to lectures, and tests are much harder than expected. Expect to self-teach most of the material if you want to have a shot at passing! Avoid her class if you can!
Expect to do a lot of homework and have to reach out for help to pass. Using on campus resources such as CLUE and the Math Study Center are highly recommended. Since when you sign up for math it doesn't display the professor at UW, just hope that you get someone else. It was very difficult but I did get a grade good enough to go on to 124.
Spent hours doing homework and spending money on a tutor to find that I ended up failing the class. Would not recommend Ebru at all! she will ruin your life.
Has good intentions but she truly is a poor teacher. Makes a lot of mistakes during lecture and makes the tests really difficult.
Lecture is literally useless. She makes mistakes while teaching and gives easy examples that are nothing like the homework. If you go to office hours she can be mildly helpful. Homework is the hardest I have ever had to do, and I received an A in AP Calc AB in high-school. I made it out with a B, but I had to work pretty hard.
Terrible teacher. First day of class she said no one would come out of her class with a GPA higher than a 2.4. I believe she accomplished that. Her teaching style is set to prepare someone for Math 125.
Ebru did an okay job teaching MATH120. I would say she could rely less on the textbook for guidance of her lectures (would literally write pieces of chapters word-for-word). Doesn't utilize the given technology - writes lectures on projector. Made lots of mistakes. Pretty careless in her teaching. Didn't seem like she cared if we succeeded.
I honestly liked her a lot! She wrote the notes up in front of the class and did her best to help explain. She also reviewed before the Midterms and Final, if you spoke up she'd go over any problem you asked. The only problem was her tests were very difficult, but she always cared about how you did and asked about it next lecture.
She's a very nice person, but her method of teaching focused on giving light weight examples and then dishing out massive complex homework assignments that were due within days of each other. It would require lots of reaching out for help to pass a class with her as a professor.
Boring lectures. 2 midterms. Hard homeworks. Few help provided online(except that she did post lecture note). Information about tests was so little(she didn't even send out any info about our 2nd midterm, which my friend and I were so speechless about.... ). Do not recommend!
Bekyel is the worst math professor I have ever had, Perkins class was the same quarter and his students averages were amazing compared to our class. She over complicates everything and makes you leave class feeling stupid, and her tests are extremely hard, way different from the review! This class caused me a lot of stress and anxiety, avoid her!!
Love Professor Bekyel! She color codes all her notes and is the clearest, neatest math professor I've ever had (A rarity, I may add). She is incredibly intelligent and explains things very well. Wish she was teaching 126 next quarter!
Lectures are boring but essential. Shes cute in a little old Turkish mom kind of way. Weekly quizzes, but she tells you exactly what's on them. Midterms are fair, challenging but not at all horrible. Gives you the website that has all of her old tests. Records her lectures and posts notes online. Homework is hard but its easy to get outside help
If you want to have math125class at uw. You must choose her class!!!! Her lecture is very clear to me and I got 4.0 this quarter.
Worst math instructor I've met at UW. Hard and extremely time-consuming homework. Unreasonably strict on both homework and tests. My friend got 2 points deducted for a spelling mistake in test. She expected us to memorize more than 70 definitions and theorems and utilize them well during test. i.e NO cheat sheet at all! Do NOT take class w/ her!!!
She goes fast and isn't always clear about where she is going. If you pay attention, you'll get it. Office hours were also a must for me.
Professor Bekyel is the one of the best professors i've had at uw so far. She has a great accent, is funny, and her lectures are clear and to the point. She records all her lectures and puts them on her website too which is a plus, so attendance isn't mandatory. I heard her midterms are easier than other classes as well.
This professor is for all those who want to gain an application-oriented approach towards linear algebra. Prof. Bekyel is well-prepared for lectures, but her exams are super easy!! So if you want to score high in this class pay attention to every detail! But if you want a more theoretical approach then this would be disappointing.
I was skeptical at first by taking Ebru's class but after I did I felt like I learned a lot. She is very standard with her lectures, defines key terms/properties then does a bunch of examples. I like this a lot, others don't. Her midterms were relatively easy and she tells you exactly what will be on it. Homework is a pain but is so for all math.
Test were very difficult. Lectures were not very clear, she basically had notes directly from the book. Midterms were very hard compared to the other Professors.
Great!
Wow. One of the worst math teachers I have had so far. She is nice and will help you if you go to office hours but lectures are terrible. She barely covers the conceptual material in lectures (which is unclear) then expects you to go off and do the homework with little to no idea of what to do. Would not recommend at all.
She seems nice, but doesn't have much clarity in lecture. Be prepared to have 3 homework assignments due on the same day.
Class moves very, very quickly due to UW's quarter system. Teaching style doesn't help that. Does not conceptually explain things in lecture, but gives plenty of examples. All homework is submitted on TTh through WebAssign. Hard to prepare for the midterms as she doesn't tell what'll be on them (things never mentioned in lecture sometimes show up).
really sweet and kind teacher but her tests are way toooo hard. homework is way toooo hard. you will be expected to know how to do things you havent been taught. really hard to pass her class especially if you are a freshman.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. She doesn't give a slightest crap about making her students learn. She thinks her job is to throw material to students and expect them to know everything without teaching anything. Seriously take my advice and never take her class
My first calculus class in UW. She explains a lot and gives examples not only theories. A lot of homework but I dont think its her fault it is just how math 126 works. She tells exactly what would be on the weekly quiz and gives approximate grade before final exam and after 2 midterms so we would know where we stand. Do the HW by yourself
Professor Bekyel gives good lectures, but the homework and tests tend to be much more difficult. The homework is the same for all Math 124 classes though, as well as the final . She makes up her own midterms, which tend to be a bit different from other professors, but she has an archive FULL of past midterms which is extremely helpful for studying.
Professor Bekyel's class was difficult; her style of lecture was interesting (draws a lot of pictures on the overhead) but the material covered in lecture and on the homework did NOT transfer to the tests. Incredibly hard midterms. If possible, get another professor! The class was not worth the tears (seriously) and stress I endured all quarter!
Bekyel is a very good lecturer and I felt like I did learn a lot in the class. The tests were hard but it was clear what to study (there are countless practice midterms online) and the curve was lower than the other classes. If you are a visual or auditory learner, I would recommend her.
Just Don't.
I absolutely loved going to her lectures. She would explain each concept in good detail. Textbook use is not mandatory although I used it to practice for the final. Her midterms and finals archive is very good and the exams are not very hard. Going to the lecture helps but is not required.
I took Calculus in high school so it definitely helped with this class. 124 in general has a lot of homework that's hard than the tests. Bekyel wasn't as bad as people said, but if you haven't taken calculus before, beware: 124 and Bekyel move quickly. Her midterms are hard than the other professors, but it results in a lower curve. Just work hard.
Makes really simple concepts really difficult on exams. The final was un necessarily hard and she tends to grade pretty tough as well. Put more work into this class than any of my other ones & still didn't get the best grade.
Awful teacher. Tests are heavy part of your grade, and final was nothing like any of the review material that she gave out. I worked hard, and got above average in every category but finished the class with a low grade. I never want to take another one of her classes again. If you can change your professor, do it.
The final test was nothing like the review!
Just a typical math prof -- she wasn't super outstanding either way. I passed the class just fine but probably would have suffered if I didn't already know the material. She's a little removed and doesn't seem very approachable. I'd take a class from her again but I'd rather find someone with a little more passion.
Lectures and homework/exams did not line up well. Attempts to get additional help and ask questions about tests were given short and rude email responses with instructions to simply 'ask your TA.' Not super helpful.
Solid! Her lectures were sometime confusing and she was not very thorough in her explanations. There is a lot of homework, which was sometimes frustrating, especially during midterms. There tends to be surprises in her tests, not too crazy, but rather a mashup of many different concepts. I had her for Math 111 & 112 which helped my expectations.
Ebru is a fair professor! If you attend the lectures, study EVERYTHING (like all classes), and just pay attention, you'll do fine. I thought her midterms/quizzes/final were all pretty fair. You HAVE to know everything she teaches though, but that is like all classes. I am not great at math, and I did not even have to study that hard for this class.
i don't see why there're comments saying her classes are confusing. She's very clear on her illustration and materials are organized! she always post hw and deadline at least 1 week before so i have the flexibility! she's a great professor and i would like to take her class again!
The lectures are not helpful for the homework or exams.
She dashes through her lecture that no one understands what she is saying. Her lectures do not really help you for homework and tests.. Good luck if you have her
The disparity between the lectures and homework is a lot. Two huge assignments per week. She'll help out during office hours. Midterms aren't easy.
One of the better professors in the intro calc series. She posted videos of lectures online which was great for review, but I recommend going in person if you want to do well (she answers a lot of questions and review problems). A lot of homework and tests are more difficult than problems you see there or in class but pretty straightforward.
Her texts are ridiculously hard, expecting you to instinctively understand how to use geometric concepts for calculus use. She will give you questions you have never seen before on the test. I feel like this better prepared me for the final, but webassign and quizzes were a real adjustment due to difficulty.
Ebru is clearly a very intelligent person and she has a very firm understanding of mathematical concepts but she doesn't give off vibes that suggest she cares about students learning. She also expects you to have very strong algebraic background and has no mercy if you don't immediately understand how to connect algebra to calculus..
In this class you are only graded on homework, worksheet, quizzes and tests with the tests making up for most of the percentage. Bekyel doesn't help prepare you very well for tests in class and they are very difficult. Her office hours may be helpful, but her office is hard to find and crowded when she is available
I love how she wrote using different colors to denote different things! I never had to use the textbook as she covered everything in lecture and her exam archive is great. She's also very accessible during office hours. I personally think that she is as good as Andrew Loveless, if not better. I definitely recommend her for visual learners.
One of the worst professors I have had. She does not explain ANYTHING. I was better off not going to class and figuring out the information myself. During lectures she works through examples and gives no explanations as to what she is doing. Quizzes and finals/midterms are not graded fairly and she never says what material is going to be on them
In the first half of the quarter, I found that not going to lecture and learning everything on my own on Webassign made the class easier, lectures are more useful towards the 2nd half of the quarter when some of the stuff gets a little more complicated (or just watch the recorded lecture, there's no participation or attendance for lectures.)
She's unfair in midterm exams and made one test noticeably more difficult then the other, and was really rude to anyone who would ask her about it.
Professor was absolutely HORRIBLE. If you have the choice do NOT take this class with her. Her class is very unorganized test and quizzes never match up with the homework or class lectures. I feel constantly all over the place in this class because she never focuses on just one topic. Reading from the book is the only thing that helped me.
excused none of my work when i had a doctors note and was told i wasn't allowed to attend class. old exams/homeworks were nothing like her tests. made two versions of midterms (1 was significantly harder) and then graded them on the same curve which screwed half her class. if you can get any other professor, i would HIGHLY recommend doing so
Ebru has some good jokes. But thats about it. If youre good at math naturally, you may actually succeed, but if youre not, youre gonna have to work extra hard. And maybe even that wont be enough. Exams across the sections vary in difficulty (which should be like.. illegal?) and she isnt straightforward. Avoid this teacher AT ALL costs.
makes a class that could be an easy 4.0 into an incredibly stressful class. i hardly go to lecture because i'm better at teaching myself the concepts. ridiculous amount of assigned homeworks and tests are not comparable to other math 111 professor's tests (her's are remarkably harder). she also has literally no sympathy for her students. AVOID!!!!!
She is super inflexible and apparently her tests are harder than the other math teachers'. The concepts learned in this class are actually pretty simple but she overcomplicates everything and makes it much harder than it needs to be. Also for the last midterm had one version that was significantly harder than the other. Would not recommend.
Worst professor Ive ever had. I try to remain fair when considering professors, but she showed absolutely no interest in student success and was very rude when asked simple questions. I got mad just sitting in class because her lectures were so disorganized and her homework never synced up to the sections we were learning.
There was an insane amount of homework each week and it didn't even help you prepare for the exams. The practice problems and midterm reviews were no help for the exams either. She gave exams where one version was extremely harder than the other. AVOID HER AT ALL COST!!
She made this class way harder than it needed to be you might be better off not showing up to lectures and teaching yourself because she over complicated simple ideas. The final was way harder than any of the old ones from the math archive and some of the questions we barely did any practice on or even went over.
Online is NOT a class to take unless you have a very good background in algebra. Major discrepancy between lectures, homework, and exams. Lectures would be easily-understandable, homework would require major thinking, then you look at the first question of a test and probably just want to cry in agony and reconsider your entire life. :) cheers
Definitely the worst Professor in 126. Her test only focuses on graphs, however, other instructors focus on different aspects and test students by real knowledge. Her lecture goes really fast, I think even the best students even don't know what's going on. Stupid test + lecture that can't understand she.
I am so regretful to take her class, there are 6 friends of mine who are also in her section, all of us think she does not know how to teach. I don't want to be so negative, but it is so annoying that you can only understand maybe 20% of her lectures, and there are no recordings. By the way, her test is hardest and there are lots of graphs.
too many notes in the lecture, and she often messed up the calculation process. she even posted wrong solutions to the class, and her exams involve to many graphs. i hate graphs
It took her 124 online class the first quarter of my college career and I was lost. Unfortunately, I have her again for 126. I couldn't change my schedule already when I realized it would be her teaching the class. She has made my life much harder than it should've been.
Ebru Bekyel was amazing. I didn't think I was smart enough to pass the calculus series but having a female professor really inspired me. Her tests are difficult but the answers always collapse nicely if you do the correct process. She obviously cares for students and makes great jokes in lecture. Be prepared to work hard but also to be impressed.
explain stuff in great detail and always being inspiring
She's not the most fantastic teacher I've ever had, but she's a pretty solid choice for mathematics. As long as you go to class, you should understand the context fine. Did not record lectures. Study for the weekly quizzes, don't buy the textbook, and pay attention to the test review days in class. Easiest class in the calc series.
I took the online class. the lectures were easy to understand. The home works were harder compared to the lectures but still doable but they won't prepare you for the exam as it is much harder than the content of the lectures and the assignments. Also I bought the text book but didn't even use it for the whole quarter.
I took the online class after taking & doing well in Calc AB during high school, thinking it would be a breeze. Like everyone else has been saying, the lectures & hw were easy enough, but the test questions were sickening. It doesn't really matter if you get the concepts because the tests will ruin you. Don't take this class.
the 2.7-3.1 curve is easier to achieve than expected, if you get 87% or higher in all 3 exams and actually do your homework (never heard of anyone who does no homework with those exam grades) you will get 3.8-4.0.
don't.
She isn't good
Hardest math exam I ever took because of her. Beware of the first midterm where you have to know your graphs so don't skip over them. I think the hardest part about her class is visualising 3D graphs so while reading the textbook, pay attention. Avoid this professor at all costs.
I took 2 classes from her and got my 2 worst math grade. Tough exams. Toucgh grader.
Avoid her at ALL COSTS!!! Had medical reasons for not attending the class for two weeks and she wouldn't help me at all in understanding the course material. Instead suggested me to use my annual drop. Wouldn't recommend taking her at all.
Highly recommend her online math class. Homework is frequent and difficult, but lectures are easy to follow and she is easy to contact. Tests are difficult as well, but this is to be expected in any calc class. Online is much easier than in-class for me because lectures can be paused and replayed.
If you have a family emergency like a death, there is no make up or arrangements to be made for quizzes or assignments. Homework is online but if the graph is in denominations of 20 and you have to guess to get a number say 3.4, and the answer is 3.64 you will get it wrong. Lectures are hard to understand, I do better reading the book. RUN!!
The homework is done online and pretty easy to do as the concepts are clear and understood. Her exams are however not related to the homework and full of graphs and cost or production questions. This is an Algebra class and all the homework is a waste if you are testing for something completely different. She should not be teaching this subject.
This class is really not that difficult. It's basically a review of basic algebra that I learned in middle school. That said, you should still show up to lectures and read the book for certain concepts that are slightly harder to understand. Ebru teaches the material, but sometimes the way she explains is slightly confusing, so read the book!
This is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesnt teach at all and her test is completely different from her practice test. Be ready to get 2.0 in math 111
By far the most unfair professor I have ever had. The concepts for this class are quite simple but she is bent on making the tests as tricky as possible. The average exam scores are around 60%. The study she provides does not reflect her exams. In-fact the exams are always one step further than what she teaches us in class.
This class is essentially a review of algebra but applied to economics. You still need to show up to lectures and study the material. The exams are often harder than the homework and in-class examples, but she has sufficient past exams to help you study. I highly recommend taking it concurrently with ECON 200 because there's some overlap.
The class and lectures aren't too confusing, but what is confusing is her atrocious rubric for grading tests. I got marked down so many times for "not including ___" when it's clearly in my answer. Expect to submit regrades, each test is horribly graded by either her or her TAs and she knows it.
This class is not hard yet the grading criteria is really ambiguous. Two out of my three exams are graded weirdly. I wrote 0.06 while the question didn't mention up to what decimal we should round. I got points off just because the grader wanted us to write till 0.0603. The feedback I got back was only: I'm very sorry but there's nothing I can do.
This was the worst Math I've ever taken. Her explanations were hard to understand plus when I went to the Math Center and got her help I ended up getting the homework question wrong.
Nice lady but kind of hard to follow, and doesn't go out of her way to make this class intersting.
Not the greatest prof ever, but she explains things well enough, and gives you practice tests for the exams. Do the homework, go to quiz section, take the practice tests and you'll do great.
Professor Bekyel is a very good teacher but her exams are much harder than the other professors in the math department. She also assigns weekly quizzes and has homework due 3 times a week (more than other math classes at UW). Her teaching is very clear and direct, but get ready to study hard for her exams if you take her class.
Whatever you do.. do not take this class. Horrible professor, avoid at all costs.
I took this class online and it was terrible! Her recorded lectures are of absolute no help to the WebAssign homeworks, let alone the exams. It was a waste of time. I wish I had never taken this class
She is one of the only professors that is not understanding to the events that are currently happening in our world. She makes the exams harder then any assigned work or problems that are given. All of her lectures are not descriptive and hard to understand in a geometric stand point.
This teacher during the COVID pandemic and the BLM protests, would not accommodate for student's individual personal situations, including telling students to go to other family member's homes during the COVID crisis if they don't have access to stable internet for the exam. She is absolutely ruthless, and gives zero care about student's wellbeing.
Professor Ebru does not care about her students. She unyielding with what is going on currently and she also does NOT know how to teach. If someone wanted a high school level teacher, she is the one. Hardly explains why then does an example that is simple. In homework and tests, the problems were 10 times harder and have things she never covered.
She gave no time to answer questions during class and she was literally too focused on writing notes to even notice anything. I asked her for some help on the HW but her explanations were still so confusing. Hard exams. So many quizzes. The only thing good that came out of this class was that I had a good TA.
I don't understanding why all Math 308 sections had to watch her lecture videos for the entire quarter of learning. She was not the best professor at explaining things, nor to follow with. Her recorded lectures were pretty dry. We still pay the same amount of tuition for remote classes. Can't instructors give their own lectures?
she gives a lot of work to do!! homework worksheet quiz and so forth!! and she gives so many homework, it always takes me 2 hours or more to finish! and what she teaches is pretty easy, but the homework she gives is much harder than what she teaches. it is difficult!!!!!!
Worst professor Ive ever had for math. Does a horrible job at explaining problems and always skips. Shes lazy, and doesnt work hard to make her students understand material. Never take her! The rating is 100% accurate.
Generally speaking, her online lectures are fine, but the amount of content covered in the lectures are limited, which compare it to the difficulty and the amount of homework she gave, the lecture is just too basic, and the homework take long time to do. Also I don't like the WebAssign that most math teacher use, it is very confusing and costly.
Professor Bekyel is the worst professor I have ever had. Exams have no partial credit, perfect numbers only, one attempt. Material on exam is exceptionally difficult. Her TAs have many office hours for online learning, but she is never accessible outside of class. There are no regrades offered. Lectures aren't helpful. Be lucky to pass with a 2.0.
why is it so hard to get in contact with her out of class? . tried getting in touch with her out of class but no luck. Her lectures seem pretty straight forward but the examples given and the lecture notes don't help when doing the homework, spent at least 3 hours on homework. test are pretty tricky and there are no regrade requests.
Pros: she tells you what WebAssign questions to study for the quizzes which are once a week Cons: bad lectures that use the most basic examples, takes awhile to get in contact with her, homework can take up to an hour and the midterms make you work overtime
Before taking Math 124 with her, I was scared because of the bad reviews, but as long as you do the work, you should be fine. I was already familiar with the material, so I never felt the need to use office hours, but I got through with higher than a 3.0. Exams and homework are tougher than lecture examples. Be prepared to work HARD in her class.
If you're registered for their class, get out now. Hardest tests I've ever seen. Does not answer questions clearly at all, takes forever to answer them. Basically on your own for the quarter. Two midterms (35%) and final (25%) are harder than any homework or quiz you'll have in the quarter. Obvious they aren't there to give handouts.
I got an A in AP Calc the year before and I was lost in this class.
If you're thinking about taking her, switch out or wait until next quarter to change to a new professor. This class is very Homework heavy, Midterms are impossible, and there is a quiz every week. If you're thinking about just watching her lectures? Expect to learn this material all on your own / khan academy. She also doesn't provide feedback
Worst professor. When I asked her a questions she answered very rudely and doesn't provide helpful answers. It's hard to learn with her negative attitude, she doesn't care about her students. The lectures were not helpful. The tests were extremely hard. She'd say which questions to review, then use completely different ones that she didn't teach
I took an online Math 124 class with her and was extremely hard. For us, she had pre-recorded lectures which were blurry and sometimes cut off from the screen. Her midterms and finals were extremely difficult and there is SO much homework. Overall, she did not put in much effort to help us understand the material and answers questions rudely.
Very rude. Her lectures were blurry and did not help what so ever.
Compared to the material in her blurry prerecorded lectures, the homework and exams were extremely difficult. I feel like she does not care about her students or teaching the course in general. She wakes up and chose violence everyday!
The rudest professor I have ever had. The grading system is deadly strict. You need to get a 98 to receive a 4.0 in her class. I feel I am not respected at all as a student. Her lectures are HELLS. Never expect to learn anything from her lectures. Good luck to anyone who is planning on taking her courses. God Bless you.
Shame on you.
Worst teacher
Rubbish
Worst teacher and i think she should leave UW and find a CC for work.
Absolutely horrible. Midterms and final are harder than any previous examples given in class. Homework is incredibly time consuming. Lectures are blurry and have only simple problems, making harder problems (like on homework and tests) even more confusing. If you're taking her class in the future I'm so sorry, and good luck.
I've never had such a dense professor. Absolutely terrible. Embarassing professor honestly.
She was a good professor, but the section I took was completely asynchronous and had no quiz sections, which made it more difficult. She did have many office hours available tho. The weekly quizzes were very short and easy. The tests were much harder than lecture, but all the complainers probably didn't even open the exam archives.
The tests are unnecessarily difficult. The practice tests do not resemble the two midterms or the finals at all. The lecture videos are blurry and when the blurriness was addressed we were told to "zoom in." This class is very test heavy and you will need to do the assignments to even think of passing. Her grading also makes absolutely no sense.
The class is very heavily based on exams, they make up around 60% of the class grade. Focus on these. The homework is time-consuming but not impossible and she gives a lot of time. She grades carelessly. I lost points on the final for not saying the second derivative is the derivative of the first when it should be obvious this late in the quarter
Her lecture is not very exciting, but she explains the concepts. Read the book before and after the lecture would help learning the concepts. The exams are the main focus. Probably don't take intro calc with her if you're not good at math.
She is quite frankly the worst teacher I have ever had. The fact she is still employed is beyond me I couldnt recommend not taking her class more. I got a 4.0 in precalc and am not sure if Ill pass this quarter. The quizzes and homework are nothing like the exams. Her lectures are confusing and blurry, and she never responds to emails, she sucks.
terrible. she literally messed up grading my exam, and when i pointed her mistake out to her, she said that although i was correct, upon looking at another problem (which was right), she would take away more points from that if i requested a regrade. so rude and an awful teacher, dont know how tf she still has a job
Midterms are scheduled outside of normal class time. Unaccommodating to the time conflicts she caused. Make sure you don't have classes near your quiz sections or else it will clash. 3 homework a week and she expects you to use the weekend to finish on due Mondays. Overworked and confusing. Wait and take this class with someone else!
A 98% is required in order to get a 4.0. The exams are nothing like the practice tests, and she is horrible about preparing you for the exam. She released information about the exam the Friday before a Tuesday exam. Also changed the time of the exam last minute and was not accommodating about it either. Steer clear if you can.
Her lectures are boring and shes hard to follow. The homework is nothing like the quizzes and she gives barely any test prep for finals and midterms. Wont extend deadlines and is not flexible. Do not recommend if you want to have good mental health :)
Absolutely the worst class Ive taken for math. The professor shows no empathy and its obvious she doesnt care about the class. That negative energy goes off to her students. Dont ask a question because she seems annoyed, at least in Canvas DMs. Directions are unclear and confusing. Lectures are boring and no energy.
Wait and take this class with Prof. Taggart. This class is very unclear and the TA's do not even reply to messages. We basically have to teach ourselves. Heavy work for such short time. Two midterms, quizzes every week and a final. In Taggart's, there's not even midterms. This class is a joke.
STAY AWAY! Her lectures are terrible, and she is just not a good teacher. Literally have no days off. If you don't have homework, you have a quiz. If you don't have a quiz, you have an activity due at 6PM. You have to do homework over the weekend too. Also doesn't update grades. It is week 8 and we only have 1/4 of our completed work in gradebook.
Asynchronous lectures on youtube with ads made it extremely difficult. Her tests are absolutely nothing like the homework or even the practice quizzes. For both exams so far I have spent at least a week studying including taking a re-taking practice tests only to be blindsided. Refuses to accommodate resources for disabilities too.
don't take this class with this professor. the lectures are little help and there is homework every other day so you get very little time to absorb the information. the exams are nothing like the quizzes and she is a tough grader. she also has no compassion for her students and won't extend deadlines for any reason. worst class I've taken here.
worst class I have ever taken at this school. teacher doesn't care about her students and has no compassion. the homework is time consuming and the exams are hard and make no sense. I've never felt the need to rate a professor until I met her. even though this is the class is a continuation of math 111, just take it later with another professor.
Homework and quizzes aren't difficult if you watch the lectures but oh my god the midterms and final are a different breed. Like did I even learn this material kind of breed. It's like she's trying to have us fail. Schedules homework every other day and doesn't release the lectures until a day or two before hw is due! So there is no going ahead.
Take this class with another prof. The only thing keeping me from dropping this class is that S/NS for this quarter is okay for prereqs. Tests do not look like homework or lectures at all. TA's do not message back. Unfair to those who cannot attend quiz section or office hours. A test every week, and expects you to do homework on the weekends.
Super disorganized. Wasn't respectful of students in other time zones. Didn't take into account the current pandemic. Lectures sucked and looked like they were made on a 2008 flip phone. Unclear expectations. Super unfair grading. Just a horrible professor all around. If you can switch to a different Prof, DO IT!!!! I have no clue why she has a job
This class was just asynchronous videos where you didn't even see her, it was just her writing and SO BORING. Homework was manageable and tests weren't too hard. There are semi-weekly-ish quizzes which aren't hard either. I didn't put a ton of effort into the class and didn't do particularly well on tests or anything but ended up with a 3.8 somehow
Terrible, she made a mistake grading my test and deducted a few extra points from it, but when i corrected her and she saw she messed up, she said she could give me points back here but then deduct points from somewhere else because of some long made up excuse that my answer was not sufficient although i got full points for it initially.
Please for the love of all things good, do not take Prof. Bekyel if you value your mental health, especially if you're not naturally good at math. She never explains things clearly, and goes way too fast over examples and explanations. The workload is unrelenting, and she's rather unkind too. Avoid at all costs.
Online class is flexible for students, and grading in midterm is easy although you make mistakes.
Lectures are not generally expansive on topics in the textbook, or easy to follow.
Prof Bekyel throws in some witty remarks every now and then, but she does go pretty quickly through the lectures. Be prepared to spend plenty of time studying on your own to understand concepts, she only really introduces them and shortcuts that you can take after you understand concepts. She does provide fairly good review material though.
seriously dont take this class with her. everyone i know in the class hated her and she was extremely unaccommodating. she wouldnt allow a quiz retake even with a doctors note from being in the hospital. is such a hardass on grading--even worksheets that were graded on completion.
Had Dr. Bekyel for Honors Calculus 1 so my experience is different than most. She seems to work best with more advanced students who enjoy mathematics. A LOT of homework and difficult exams. Only take honors calc if you love mathematics. She is a decent lecturer, sometimes quite helpful sometimes unclear. Very helpful during office hours, so go!
This is a very hard class and your best resource will be TA's and additional help outside class. I had background calculus knowledge and still struggled a lot to get an acceptable grade. Test questions are miles harder than lectures so really try to understand practice tests and problems.
Tough but fair. The class goes really fast. Just be prepared to look at a problem and not understand for a few hours. The tests are straight forward. If you enjoy math this is your class.
Everyone I spoke to agrees that lectures are incredibly hard to follow and overall useless. It's a bit easier to understand after watching other vids like Khan, but at that point you don't even need them. LOTS of homework, and almost 60% of your grade is midterm/final. Extremely unaccommodating. don't recommend :///
Horrendous professor. Honestly believe the course would have been easier if UW instead gave me a Khan Academy link and a prayer. Lectures are incomprehensible, will solve half a problem and say "you guys do the rest." Rude, curt, and unhelpful with student questions. Everything else on here is true. Only take if you enjoy math, masochism, or both.
The other reviews are right, really unaccommodating, lots of homework. Don't find out the hard way.
Shes a horrible teacher (lectures make no sense and she never fully explains anything), extremely rude and unaccommodating. Every interaction I've had with her has been unpleasant. You can't really figure anything out w/ the textbook, theres no clear videos/examples for help with homework. Please don't take unless your good at math bc you wont pass
Hardest class I've ever taken, but Bekyel was generally helpful. Best piece of advice: go to office hours. She's very good there. (Regarding the honors calc series itself, don't take it unless you're already comfortable with calculus.)
Avoid by all means necessary. This lady is straight-up evil making sure midterm questions are on the subjects the students know the least about. 60% of your grade is the 2 midterms+final. The average score for my class on the midterms was <45%. Take this class at a CC and transfer it in if you have to. You couldn't pay me $50k to take this class.
Extremely unaccommodating and no empathy for students who have 2-3 other classes. Horrible at explaining things in lecture and expects way too much of students. Calculus should not be this hard, but she makes it hard. Even TA said that her exams were way too hard for the short amount of time we're given.
not a good teacher at all. ruined my passion for math. test questions were much harder than the lectures/practice, and it she does not do a good job of explaining in her lectures. not many study resources available. average on midterms was a 45% which is ridiculous for calc 1.
Shows you the easiest version possible of a problem and tests you on a problem way harder than you could have guessed possible while not explaining any of the topics.
I don't know how the UW could hire a person like this. Teachers like this are what make the math department low quality in terms of student satisfaction and success. It almost seems like her goal in the class is to fail as many students as she can. This is the type of teacher who makes college unenjoyable, Do not Recommend at all.
Dr. Bekyel is a fantastic professor. She cares about her students and the math, but she grades harshly and her tests and homework are difficult. The class and 13X series requires a lot of work, but is rewarding and there are lot of resources from Bekyel if you need help.
Bekyel is a menace to a hilarious degree. Everyone comes into 12x with nightmares of getting a teacher like her - she is the personification of UW's weed-out system. She takes joy in thinning the herd of incoming STEM kids. If you're not already strong in calc, stay away. If you are (and love schadenfreude) sit far back and enjoy the show.
The professor does not care for your success, the professor is not understanding in the slightest. Encountering professors with the same mindset as Dr. Bekyel's tests my dedication to my education. I would never recommend this professor, if I could switch out, I would. Beware future students.
DIFFICULT! does not give extensions of assignments even if you're really sick. her exams are specific and expects you to remember concepts learned in freshman geometry. she does not record lectures so if you're sick, you're screwed. her tests have an average of 50-60% while other professors have them in their 80's.
Probably the most work I've ever done in a class. Take Math 134 if you want to spend most of your time doing work for it. On the other hand, the lectures are very engaging, and the content/level of learning is worth it. If you like math or want to like math take this course.
I wouldn't say she's takes joy in failing students, but she's definitely very strict and not very approachable. If you have to take her class, make very good friends with your TA (shoutout to Marvyn!), make use of the tools WebAssign gives to practice stuff you did bad on, and do as many practice tests as you can before exams.
She is not nearly as mean as other people here say, but she isn't very personable (I didn't talk to her once). The midterms and finals can be really rough, even if you're comfortable with the material, so make sure to study as much as you can for those. Overall, a fine class that if you take it seriously, is pretty low stress until finals.
She gives way too much homework, and the course is weighted too heavily on exams. However, Dr. Bekyel and her TA are very accessible, cool, and helpful. The lectures are pretty dry. Solutions to homework/exam review problem sets are never posted. Dr. Bekyel is a very cool person and accomplished professor, but not a good instructor in my opinion.
Tough grader and has a lot of homework (get ready for some 10+ hours hw assignments). However, Prof. Bekyel herself is approachable and is a good lecturer. Proofs done in class are hard, but don't hesitate to ask questions and ask Prof. Bekyle to reexplain the confusing parts, she'll be happy to help :) She is very patient when answering questions.
After finishing my degree this quarter, I can officially say she was the worst Professor I ever had. BY FAR.
carelessness
Don't be afraid of her reviews.124 is a hard course no matter who you have. If you show up to office hours and make use of her resources Bekyel is a good and straightforward professor. I got a 4.0 in the class because she answered all of my questions. Issue - she does not record lectures. Do practice tests and go to her office hours to succeed!
I don't want to just show up and drag a professor, but honestly the worst form of instruction I've ever seen. Recycled course material from the prior semester, put zero effort into actually teaching. Just seems like they're there to collect a paycheck. Does easy examples for online "lectures" then assigns things never discussed before.
Creates very difficult tests that aren't even close to difficultiy of homework and lecture problems. Even students who had taken previous calculus classes found her class to be extremely hard and toughly graded.
Dr. Bekyel is simply not a good professor. She does not record lectures nor does she post notes that students can follow along with. Her lectures are incredibly fast-paced and she is absolutely awful at responding to emails. Her tests are incredibly difficult and contain material irrelevant to class. She is quite intimidating too.
For Math 13x in particular, she is a pretty good teacher. Relatively effective at introducing and explaining new topics, but you've got to be constantly paying complete attention or you're done for. She can be a fairly hard grader, but once you get the hang of it, it isn't too bad. She loves to throw in tricky questions on tests, which is annoying.
A good lecturer but a bit old fashioned (doesn't record lectures, doesn't have a lot of online resorces). Also I thought all the midterms were pretty fairly written but the final was a bit overly difficult.
This class sucks. I retook the online version 3 times. 0.6 the first time, 1.8 the second, and I'm about to finish with a 3.1. U know what changed? the 3rd time i watched every lecture. They're hard to sit thru sometimes, but prof bekyel is very thorough with her explanations and covers all the weird algebra tricks you need (if ur paying attention)
Do NOT take her in an online section. Insanely low test averages, M1 was a 45% average and M2 was a 39% average. Lectures are long and hard to get through but they do help, make sure to have a study buddy or a group because it will make your life a lot easier in this class.
The 13x series is interesting and very time consuming. The amount of questions on homework will decrease as time goes on, but each will likely take more than hours to solve. Don't be afraid to ask questions (get clarification when needed). Her office hours helps greatly. Strongly recommend if you are interested in learning the "how" and "why"
Absolutely awful experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone.Take math 124 with anybody else, especially if it's online!
This is my impression of her after taking Math 134. First, she's a very tough grader, it's never unfair grading, but she doesn't let small mistakes slide, which can be frustrating at times. Besides for that, she is a pretty good lecturer and I did learn a lot in her class. Most of the difficulty comes from the course content itself, not her.
Bekyel is a kind and intelligent professor. Lectures were dry. Homework was quite difficult and time consuming. Tests were mostly straightforward, but always had some tricky questions. In general, don't take this class unless you're extremely comfortable with calculus and aren't doing other rigorous coursework. Go to office hours!
-Please only take this class if you're already comfortable with calculus. Otherwise you will struggle. -Be careful on the midterms/final, as they are a large part of your grade (and don't make silly mistakes). -Go to office hours. -Don't start studying a day before the exam. -Don't start the homework an hour before it's due
Bekyel is very passive-aggressive towards students, especially when asking for questions relating to the content. Bekyel is also difficult to understand due to her lectures being conveyed on paper, as well as having a strong accent. Overall, would not recommend taking her sections, especially with her content being heavily influenced by lectures.
Bekyel was an incredible professor. Lecture style is clear and she doesn't use technical language. TAs are all very well prepared and helpful. Syllabus is short, so there's no confusion about grading. Exams are difficult - usually 1-2 curveballs, and the weekly quizzes can also be hard. But partial credit is very generous.
Does not record lectures and goes insanely fast. So hard to keep up with what she is doing. Timed quizzes in quiz section are impossible to correctly complete in time. She is also very unapproachable if you have a question.
(MATH 135) A lot harder than 134 in my opinion since all the topics are new. You won't do well if you only do the homework. Also, make sure you study for the final or else you'll fail badly.
Lectures are fast and can be confusing, and the font size on the lecture notes is tiny so having the notes on a tablet or something is very helpful. The quizzes are pretty easy and will boost your grade. Doing just the homework isn't enough.
Im currently taking Math 208 at the uw but my professor's teaching style is pretty chaotic. However, I stumbled upon a set of video recordings by Professor Ebru Bekyel and it has been a lifesaver for me. She explains every single concept in a clear and concise way, which has been extremely helpful. I really appreciate her!
Math 13x is very tough, but if you're a diehard math nerd looking to dive in, it's the way to go. Introduces proofs and honestly every math class you take afterwards will be a breeze. Bekyel teaches the course perfectly, tough but fair. She's also just a nice person and gives good lectures.
if you miss the class, you will fail.
Her lectures make less sense than reading the textbook. She also does not provide enough solutions to really know what will get you a good score. Really smart professor, but expects her students are as smart as her from the start. She does not post lectures notes or solutions to review problems. Also moved midterm 2 days early last minute.
Personally, I felt the calculus & diffeq portions were taught well, but the linear algebra portion was difficult to follow w/o extensive outside reading. Tests and homeworks are graded very strictly (hardly any true 100s from anybody on anything). Overall, enthusiastic and fun teacher, just put the honors in honors math lol...GO TO OFFICE HOURS. gl
Had Prof Bekyel for the entire 13x series, it's a tough one but very rewarding. Not only with credits but just the students are amazing, lectures are interesting, textbooks and homework problems are great, and just highly recommend. Not an easy class but it gets easier throughout the year, 134 is 100% the hardest class. Go to office hours!
Tough math class, but Professor Bekyel is a great teacher. Lectures are engaging, and the textbook is really helpful. Make sure to go to office hours and use resources like unstuckstudy AI alongside the coursework. It's a challenge, but doable if you put in the work.
Dr. Bekyel is not particularly helpful if you are struggling in math. The 134 course itself was difficult, but her being the teacher only made it worse. Her methods of mathematical proofs are unconventional and she does not sufficiently justify why it is so different. She grades your homework on the basis of her weird and unconventional proof style
Professor Bekyel is an excellent professor. It is clear that she has been teaching the 13x sequence for a while. The most important thing when taking her classes is to attend Office Hours. However, her grading is quite strict and to an extent nit-picky. But on a plus side, this will leave you extremely well prepared for any higher level classes.
Bekyel teaches very in-depth and explains things clearly. Very willing to answer questions especially during office hours. Quizzes aren't too difficult; basically just cover homework problems. Overall a very great and kind professor. Only downside is she doesn't record lectures, but it's good motivation to pay attention.
Intensely Confusing
idk why people are hating just pay attention ong
- lectures confusing - not recorded despite room having recording equipment - had to learn everything from quiz section :( if taking this prof you MUST pay attention to the lectures
She has a fast pace during the lectures which makes it difficult to follow along sometimes. Also, the homework problems were leagues harder than any examples in the lecture so the notes you take in class don't help. Also the real exams often had completely different questions than the practice and previous ones she gives you to help you practice.
She is absolutely terrible. She negative curved our class because we were doing well (not because of her by the way). I learned every ounce of material from the textbook, no help from her AT ALL. TERRIBLE teacher. A 91 was a 3.1 😭
Bekyel's lectures are clear and straightforward. She's funny and engaging in class (saddles became a meme iykyk). Quizzes are easy as she tells you exactly what's on the quiz ahead of time. The midterms and finals aren't bad and similar to past exams and HW, but highly affect your grade, so make sure to study. I don't think she deserves the hate.
No prelecture, no panopto recording, the notes were written by hand and never uploaded on canvas, though she is a smart professor.
Other calc 126 classes has their 4.0 grade at ~94. Ours required a 98 for a 4.0, even though midterm difficulties were similar on average and final exams were the same. Very tough curve from this professor specifically.
Heavy tests yet good lectures. She clarifies everything and is even more effective during OH. I got a 4.0 by just paying attention and doing past exams.
Dr. Bekyel's lectures are clear and helpful, clarifying the essence of things. Quizzes and exams are difficult but very related to what she has taught in class. You prepare well as long as you are actively engaged in classes. She is friendly and patient when you ask her math questions, and gave inspiring encouragement to my thank-you email (⌯'▾'⌯)♡
Grades are heavily curved down, and lectures and notes are not recorded anywhere, meaning you must attend class or learn the material through your own resources. Nearly weekly quizzes/midterms. Do not get sick! There are no make-ups, and due to the curve you have no opportunity to get your grade up (not even with 99% on the final).
This was an incredibly difficult entrance to college level mathematics, but Dr. Bekyel was consistently willing and able to help understand assignments and course content. Lectures weren't always the most beneficial, but provided useful context for some textbook concepts. Homework and tests were graded very harshly.
MATH 134 with Dr. Bekyel is a very relevant class for students intending to do math. Covers proof writing which shows up in many STEM fields, covers some analysis in calculus which makes Real Analysis more familiar later on, etc. The class is time consuming and your gpa will probably drop, but it will prepare you very well for the future.
lectures do help, homework and tests were okay, but the grading scale was so bad.
Despite the reviews listed here, Dr. Bekyel is very engaging and a fantastic professor. She is quite the charismatic professor who cares about her students success. If you want to succeed, study outside class is absolutely necessary in addition to the homework, notes are important as her lectures aren't recorded but overall, a great professor.
Keeps lectures engaging, she has a strong focus on building intuition and good grades are in reach with a reasonable amount of effort.
The professor's disorganized teaching style, lack of recorded lectures, and failure to provide promised worksheets make it difficult for students to keep up. Slowing down, providing structured notes, and ensuring materials are uploaded would greatly improve the learning experience.
She doesn't post ANY lecture recordings or lecture notes, so if you miss a day you get automatically put behind. The content of this course isn't that difficult but she moves so fast that if you don't understand one topic, you likely will just continue to struggle. The tests are weighted so heavy that homework doesn't boost your grade. She is bad.
She's a nice professor overall, holding clear and amazing lectures, giving questions with different difficulty to practice. But the workload for her class is relatively high, and it's hard to get a good grade. But choosing her as your professor will definitely influence your ideas towards math!
First midterm and more than 89% of the class failing. She does give example on what to study for quiz so that's a pro but the midterm is difficult, she doesn't seem to listen to the TAs to adjust the quiz, "If you can't do number 3 on mt you either study really hard or consider changing your major"I don't want to put negative review but just don't .
Lots of hate here, but I thought she was fine. Took Math 126 with her during my first quarter of freshman year. The lectures were not recorded, but catching up is easy with youtube. She enjoys the subject, making lecture less of a slog to sit through. The curve is difficult, but ample studying outside of class will get you a good grade.
Best professor ever! Highly recommended 11/10! Don't listen to other reviews, they are wrong ❌. The class is basically high school math review, easy peasy lemon squizzy 🍋
Average on the first midterm was 42%, she said some of us need to consider changing career paths. She went fast and wouldn't finish problems in class. Lecture wasn't recorded and filled in notes weren't posted so don't skip. Homework assignments were nothing like what we did in lecture. She was nice, but be ready to WORK and visit office hours.
Dr. Bekyel is extremely qualified, but can be shockingly unkind, uncaring and unhelpful. Throws away notes after class, forcing students to wait up to 25 min. in a crowd of students after class to take a photo, or suffer. If you have DRS accommodations or need help at all, expect contempt. Ask Loveless for an add code & use those materials.
The contents of the tests did not match up to the types of problems recommended for review, so you end up studying the wrong things.
Prof. Bekyel is really smart and knowledgeable about Precalc/calc and is very qualified, but she couldn't slow down enough to really explain everything during this course. The average test scores were below 50%, and she was rude and blamed students for this instead of adjusting her teaching style. I would recommend her at a high level, not Math120.
I don't think Dr Bekyel is always a bad teacher, she's passionate about math, but I don't think teaching Math 120 is for her. The lack of lecture recording and of posting of her notes made this class harder than it needed to be. The midterm averages for both midterms were poor. If you take her class, go to your TA's office hours it helps so so much
This class is one of the worst classes that I have taken so far. She is an extremely tough grader. She doesn't post notes, or lecture videos and never posted even a syllabus. Everyone failed both midterms and probably the final as well. 120 is not for her
Lectures aren't recorded, so find people to exchange notes with. Works through the content quickly, but accessible office hours to explain things. Answers questions in class, but doesn't always understand the questions asked, so be clear. When using the math study center, make sure the clarify that you needs something solved with the class content
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She is rude and unprofessional. She rushes through lectures and teaches in the most convoluted way. She assigns unreasonable amounts of homework. If you have to take her, plan to go to the IC or MSC daily if possible. Also, most learning will be done in section so pray that you get a good TA.
the first midterm was so hard that the class average was like a 14% and then she said to the class "if you got a low grade on the midterm, you shouldn't be here." she didn't want students to learn. she didn't prepare us for math 124. for an introductory class she made everything impossible. overall worst experience at uw was taking her class.
Had Dr. Bekyel for 126 and 300. She is incredibly engaging when explaining proofs, always finding the simplest entry and guide through the reasoning from students' perspective. Exams aren't easy, but provides review materials to help prepare. Though there are no recordings, you'll want to attend the classes of such a dedicated and gentle professor.
if you go to class and pay attention you will be fine. she's pretty funny and the lectures are pretty straight forward and her practice exams are pretty similar to her actual midterms. her OH are very useful and she's overall a pretty good professor. don't listen to the negative reviews.
Took Ebru's MATH 124 a long while ago, when its the start of COVID. She does an okay job going through the slides, and I can understand the concept with a bit help from my friend in Math major. Exams are not very hard, and similar to previous years. But again, that's my first quarter in uni and its a very chaotic time on zoom.
It's clear she enjoys what she teaches and she's very sweet but she, and I quote, expects you to 'learn on the homework.' Luckily, for each homework question you get 5 attempts to get the right answer but doing that for 8-20 questions adds up. The TAs are a hit or miss. Textbook is also expensive for never using it (it's required to access the HW.)
DO NOT TAKE.
RUN. Her tests are so much harder than other professors' tests........she did provide past exams and study guide for us to review but her tests are so hard....
For better or worse, you will end this course intimately familiar with its content. Dr. Bekyel is an adequate lecturer (if a bit fast and prone to skipping steps and assuming you can fill in the blanks), but her lectures are very basic. Most of your learning will come from the sheer volume of homework, and difficulty and tedium of her exams.
She's a very good lecturer. If you go to class and take notes you will do well. Her tests are very similar to the many old ones she provides. The poor reviews are probably from students who either don't go to class or major in communications. The plus side is that they are lowering the average and therefore raising my grade, so I'll take that.
Good luck taking this class without having taken AP Calc.
The first midterm SO hard. I got a C, B for midterm 2, and A on the final. Studying efficiently is important, and having this prof will prepare you for the final. She cares a lot and has high quality lectures, always enjoys answering questions. Take with this prof if your goal is to learn. Take with others if you just need the credit.
Take this course if and only if you enjoy maths. An extremely rigorous introduction to calculus. Expect to spent a lot of time on homework Prof. Beykel's ability to teach the course and her personal engagemnt is beyond doubt. Her negative reviews mostly come from MATH 124, whose target audience is much different from the one of this course.
Her lectures went quickly, and I felt like she assumed prior knowledge of new material. Online homework took a long time. Weekly quizzes were mostly easy, but the 15-minute limit was tough on one. The midterms felt unnecessarily difficult compared to other 124 teacher midterms. The 124 department final was extremely hard to get a good grade on.
If you attend the lectures and take notes, she is very helpful and everything is pretty managable. The final Autumn 2025 was pretty hard, but on the other hand the midterms were pretty easy.
Her lectures are easy to follow and she gives good notes to work with. The exams are average difficulty, but she gives a lot of her old exams, which end up being similar to the real exam. She tells you what questions will be on the quiz, so those are no problem at all. I learned a good amount from her in this class and she's very nice and caring.
