I took her hybrid class which I definately recommend, just don't forget online work. She is pretty easy, just gives a lot of busy work. Less than if you met twice a week though. She gives a ton of time for papers, but is never clear as to what your grade is in the class, so that makes it a little
She's eager to help you do your best on every paper you write, which makes your job easy. She offers opinions and always replies to emails with helpful tips.
She will help you all she can, but the class is pretty easy. There is lots of time for peer editing, and its actually more helpful than you think. The essays are actually fun. You should not have trouble in the class. I put in work on some of the essays, but ended up getting nothing less than a B+ on each essay. I ended up with an A in the class.
I took the hybrid class, which I recommend. I liked her a lot, some of the assignments are not too useful, but just follow the instructions and you should do fine. Prepare to spend quite a bit of time on each writing assignment. I would take her again if I could.

Easy class, but horrible teacher. Very unclear. She can't even speak english, but somehow she is teaching it... Acts as if her syllabus is the law. Try for a different teacher.
I took her on line course hoping to get more flexiblilty with my schedule...She posted stuff late and still expected you to complete it on time. She is very stubborn with her oppinions on grading and she grades better on assignments that have subjects that she favors (very biased). Find another teacher, you can get a beter grade in a differnt class
SHE IS VERY UNDERSTANDING AND HELPFUL. SHE WANTS HER STUDENTS TO SUCCEED -- SHE CARES. I WOULD TAKE A CLASS WITH HER AGAIN IF I NEEDED ONE. GOOD TEACHER. WE HAD TO WRITE A LOT OF PAPERS BUT SHE MADE IT FUN! ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS WERE HELPFUL; THEY HELPED WITH THE PAPER PROJECTS.
Professor Erdem looks serious, but she is funny, understanding, and caring. She is also enthusiastic, so you don't get bored in class. Her assignments are practical, useful, and make sense. Follow her rules and instructions, do your best, and you should be fine. I would take her class again if I could.
She is very approachable and gives all the help she can if you ask her a question. Prepares informative and fun power point presentations. Seems very enthusiastic about teaching different topics in linguistics. Gives good feedback with research paper topics. Made the class fun, interesting, and easy for a class that met everyday in the summer.
One word --- AWESOME! I agree with the raters. She is knowledgeable and funny. She is also practical and explains clearly. I mean, for the first time I feel as though I may use what I learned in class. Just go to class, participate, and do your best with the assignments. She is one of the most rational professors I've had.

Aw i love Mrs. Erdem! She is sooo freaking nice and so sweet. She really wants to help you learn and is way reasonable when she grades. I though i wrote a crappy essay for our first one and in got a 100 on it! She has a good sense of humor and i don't think she could ever be mean to anyone. Take her classes! Hybrid is easy!

Prof. Erdem is knowledgeable, approachable, and overall a WONDERFUL professor. She is nice and willing to help with writing issues, computer problems, and is flexible and understanding of conflicts. Not a very difficult class, but you learn a great deal, because she cares, and her expectations of you are clear.
Very easy class for anyone who's taken high school English and written an essay. The assignments are all easy, but the hybrid format made it hard for me to remember to do them. Other than that, very easy class.
Her expectations are clear. She is well-organized, very nice, and helpful. The class is very easy with 4 papers that are actually fun to write and interesting. She grades fairly and observes well. So it is important to participate in class. If you take the hybrid course dont forget to do the online discussion and check blackboard frequently.
shes an english teacher but cant speak english, she would mark spelling that was right wrong because once again she cant speak english, she is easy though since she isnt english and doesnt know what she is doing, if you miss more then 2 classes you're ****ed, this class is really boring so take it with a friend
She is adorable but professional. Only four essays. Confusing topics and directions at first, once understood, same format for following papers. Attendance is pretty mandatory. Treats students like adults, donen't expect or ask for explanations for late papers, absences or tadies. Easy A.
I loved her; she'll help you out a lot if you ask for it. Participate and try to write well - she pays attention to that. She's friendly and doesn't give busy work like some other pretentious teachers. She's one of the nicest at ASU. English courses are full of crap anyway, but I learned practical writing tips from her.

slow and not enjoyable lectures. Waaaaaaaay too many in class assignments and online assignments. Come on, its ENG 102, let me write my papers and focus on other things, I dont need to be bothered by these assignments that are just busy work.
After taking her, you will agree that she is a fun, enthusiastic, and very very helpful prof. Keeps assignments relatively simple while maximizing what you learn. Makes things very clear. Actually cares about her students. Sweet and approachable. Definitely recommended.
I must say she is one of the best instructor I have ever had. She is not only a faculty but also a coach. She understands every aspect of what students go through in and out of class. I respect her for her close touch on individuals. She is very eash to speak with, down to earth, always available to help and provide more than you can ask for.

Many times she will not understand your question or how to answer it but she does teach well.. just work off your interpertation of the assignment and you'll do fine. The classes are fun because you discuss interesting topics and everyone participates. I enjoyed the class.
She does participation points and she grades by favoritism. So if you have her, be on her good side. She grades unfair, I got a 6/8 for participation and a girl who doesn't talk at all got the same points as me. Ridiculous right??
A very challenging class...but with a little bit of hard work it pays off. This instructor will clarify what is a successful argument. I learned alot. Many other students disagreed with her style of teaching. Using a writing tutorer will make you successful. Her grading is fair and explained. Highly recommend her. She will make you a strong writer.
I will not be taking this class again--not with the same teacher.
A true professional.
She's a very easy teacher and this is a very easy class. Don't have any quizzes or tests. Only papers, which she grades easily. Plus she is very nice!
Overall not a bad class. My biggest complaint is that the projects were graded way too slowly. Since half the students providing feedback on our rough drafts were illiterate, the feedback from the instructor was important. Unfortunately we rarely got that feedback before the next project was due. So-so class overall.
This class was a challenge, but fun. I had Claudia Browning and she was a good teacher. The reviews were a bit slow, but there were a lot of groups for this class. I felt I did well and it did show with my grade. Just keep up with all assignments, quizzes and discussions, you will get through it a positive attitude.
This class is not hard nor easy. The amount of time and effort you put in will reflect your grade. I had a lot of things going on this particular semester which showed in the quality of my work. Got a B even though I did not put my best foot forward. I had Kolette Draegan as my group instructor and she was perfectly nice.
there is a lot of work that goes into this class & assignments (esp. reflections) felt very repetitive, but she's an easy grader and will help strengthen your college writing. I continue to see no use in peer-reviews - it seems people just don't know how to give quality feedback & many times students I had to review didn't complete the assignment..
There is a lot of busy work. It's not a traditional English class. You create a portfolio of your work online and create different styles of writing.
Having to create a portfolio was new to me, but I enjoyed it. There was quite a bit of busy work, but overall I enjoy the class and received great feedback on my assignments.
I took this class for an extra credit class. Her course calender and whatwhere assignments was an absolute JOKE! I got good grades on papers, but for discussions, it's all about her opinion. If you feel you met the criteria and she doesn't hope you like 0's. Also, emailing her; you will get a reply.. but you will be left more confused then before.
She is one of the best instructors I have seen from ASU. Very attentive, provides insight into topics, listens to the students and provides constructive feedback. I have taken courses with her before but this is the first time I am rating. I LEARNED A LOT!!!
As with ENG 101, it is not fair to grade Professor Erdem specifically, as this class seems to be run by the writing department. As with 101, mostly absent leadership, super useful materials and super helpful TAs.
BAD course for Online students like myself. The semester was over last week, and I still haven't received any grades or feedback from projects that were due in October! I do like how the class was structured though. Just wish grading was better so I knew if I had to improve!
I really enjoyed taking this class and I though professor Erdem did a great job at laying out what was expected. She provided constructive feedback for all assignments and was very helpful when I reached out to her. I would take this class again.
During the online course, the TA (Mike Pfister) was excellent. Having gone through ENG 101 online at ASU really helped the framework is identical. Completion of assignments and showing some sort of progress are keys to success. Keeping on schedule and rocking the ePortfolio should net an A. Did KoC on the last day in a couple of hours.
The course is split up into pods where you work w a professor and TA. Majority of my interaction was with professor Mark Visquesney and he was fantastic. Always got back to me and graded right away. Quite a bit of writing involved obviously but you are able to pick your own topics which is nice. They integrate technology into the assignments.
It seems like this professor tries to get you to write "her" own paper rather than letting YOU write your own paper. There is a difference between setting guidelines and forcing people to write what you want. This professor is a WAY TOO CRITICAL grader, especially on Discussion Board. Avoid if you can!
Not a bad choice for ENG102. Took it online last semester and did the bare minimum. The TA's and himself give good feedback on papers. The deadlines are very clear and if you follow it you'll have no problem.
Make sure you follow instructions VERY carefully. When the professor gives you feedback on how to correct your paper, DO IT! Be very literal when asked to explain something in discussion boards and the like. I never bought the textbook, but managed to get an A in the course. As long as you follow these guidelines, you can get an A too!
I took an icourse, easy if you do not miss any assignments, overall good professor
The ABSOLUTE worst class I have ever taken! The class is so beyond disorganized! She has a weekly guideline of assignments that are due but you have to search for the instructions and a lot of what is required is in fine print. For an online class, there is so much busy work! Extremely tough grader. Tells you do a great job but end up with a C!
I took this class online and maintained an A throughout the 7 week class. I would say that if you put in effort and turn everything in on time you will get an A. Class is two writing assignments, weekly discussion boards, and an online project.
I took the course online and while the deadlines were clear, the instructions were not. Make sure you read all of the instructions before beginning any assignment, utilize all tools and make the changes request. Doing all of this will guarantee you a good grade.
Did not find this class enjoyable nor educational. Assignments were sporadic and confusing. Not enough teaching provided from instructors. Choose a different instructor for ENG 102!
Took ENG102 as session A iCourse. Complete all the assignments with effort and turn them in on time you will receive a good grade. There are 2 "projects" (essays), and then turn in a final portfolio at the end. The professor doesn't do much, you a are assigned to a group and each group has an instructor. Overall an easy class.
This was the worst class I've taken online through ASU. This class is a complete joke which I received no benefit from. The professor's team is filled with intense graders that leave you with Cs and Ds on assignments, but do not offer advice on how to fix it other than, "refer to rubric". I barely made it out with a B. Good luck with this class.
Class entirely led by the writer team. I had no contact with actual teacher. Our groups leader was very harsh in criticism and made me feel like crap most of the time. Glad this is the only class I need to take with them. Not super hard class, but expectations aren't very clear, assignments don't match the examples they give you.
STAY AWAY from this teacher! This teacher overloads you with assignments with little time to submit, no flexibility for late assignments, designed for someone with no life or no other classes!
The type of writing is not traditional, and somewhat more interesting and modern. The reflections are a little annoying. You have to spend time writing about improvements including writings outside the class. Due dates every few dates and short turn arounds for peer-review and teacher-review leave you typing your fina draft at 2am.
I took ENG102 online so my interaction with this professor was limited. They ration out students according to last name to sub-instructors so when you sign up for the course you don't know who your actual instructor will be. Erdem seemed nonchalant when concerns were brought to their attention.
Great teacher. Definetely PLENTY of work however what you put in is what you get. ALWAYS do the extra credit! Really makes a difference towards your final project. At the end of the semester she will round your grade up. She is hard but just do your work and really try!
I wanted to leave a review because I think the reviews for this course are so harsh! I thought this class was a ton of fun! You get a chance to write about your own topics, create an online portfolio, and yes the professors are a little tough on grading, but their also very understanding and very friendly. Overall, I loved this class.
I took this class online and it was pretty challenging. There are so many reflections and analyses that you have to write. Usually a writing project consists of at least 2 analyses and 1 reflection that have lengthy requirements while you are writing a long paper already. Too much busy work in this class that took a lot of time and tough grading.
loved this class! Writing instructor provided thorough feedback, responded quickly, and was very involved. Outside looking in, seems like a lot of work. But, it was very rewarding and fairly easy! Not much more demanding than any other college course. Just put in the time and effort, and you will do fine!
This class was difficult, but also manageable. A lot to read and research. Make sure to follow the instructions, and you will be fine. Our class was too large and we were broken up into smaller groups. Each group had an instructor and a writing mentor, so Prof. Erdem was not really the actual instructor to grade papers and to communicate with.
Be prepared to write a lot! Each assignment builds on writing the next essay.
Good class, I learned a lot. I Would take it again
The class is so large that Erdem doesn't actually interact with any of the students. The class seems to move at a very quick pace, considering how much is expected of the student. I've found myself tearing out my hair, and when I ask for help, it's days - even weeks - for a response. Expect minimal guidance and maximum requirements.
This is by far the worst ENG class I have ever taken. The instructors are group instructors so you never interact with the actual professor, Ebru. I am an A plus English student. I do not recommend this class to anyone. The instructors are tough graders. The assignments are broad, and it is very difficult to get an A even with following the rubric
You write a total of 2 papers 1,000-1,500 words (persuasive and solution essay) with multimodal components (poster, ad, pamphlet, etc) and multiple discussion boards. You also design your own online portfolio where you will post your work including pre, mid and post-course reflections. Just turn in your work on time and you'll be fine.
I took the ENG102 class Session A. The class is very fast paced assignments due Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday. However, the grading rubric is very clear and as long as you put the work in you will receive a good grade. The professor was able to see when you gave effort and gave you a grade that truly reflected your work. I would take his class again!
I think the english classes are institutional set up. However, just know that almost any english class you take at ASU is hard, especially online. there's about a million "helpers" in charge and you get assigned to one. So you don't really hear from the professor. 2 big projects, with big assignments in between. Lots of DB's as well. HEAVY workload
For one, these classes are too big to get true feedback from the professor. Because the class is so big, I don't think the professor takes into account the types of students she may have in her class. Second, it's extremely faced paced. This class is the hardest I've ever taken. The workload is ridiculous. There's a lot of busy work.
I didnt have much experience with her. But ENG 102 at ASU Online is easiest the worst class Ive ever taken in my life.
For the working adult, this is the worst class I've ever taken. The class is so big that the professor isn't taking into account the kinds of students in the class. For a full-time student, this class is difficult but doable. For the working adult, this class is almost impossible. The workload is ridiculous. You get 3 major assignments in one week.
The class workload wasn't too bad. However, it was the grading that killed me. Grades were posted way too late, causing me to not be able to use the feedback that was given to me. Grading was also EXTREMELY tough. Don't take this class if you don't want to put the work in.
In 7.5 weeks, I wrote 52 pages, not including weekly discussion posts. Multiple long projects that build. Final one was 14 pages! Crazy workload, especially for someone with a FT job. My other class at the time was a 300 level class, and nowhere near as time consuming. I love to write, but damn... You've gotta REALLY LOVE to write to enjoy this.
Just know you will be graded by a Grad TA for your projects (mine was Hank) and an undergrad TA for the DB posts. The projects and portfolio are quality work, they are time comsuming but I can see how they translate to other classes. The DB posts are worthless busy work. I spent about 8-12 hours a week on this course which is a little heavy.
Erdem is not around. You'll have a TA. Course is writing intensive as it is an English class. Follow rubrics to the teeth, or points get deducted. Pay attention to deadlines. Not a fan of the online portfolio. In my group, we all helped each other with any issues, TA seemed hands-off. I enjoy writing, so got an A. Be ready to work!
It says in the course disposition when registering online about having TA's grade your work. My TA's were there 24/7 and very helpful. Quick feedback on assignments. The work itself was easy if you followed the instructions and paid attention to deadlines. I maybe did about 30-an hour a day and passed with an A.
I have not clue why the Awful feedback is but I had a fantastic experience.
This class was the most overwhelming ever! I liked designing the portfolio but it was nonstop writing yet I kind of liked the hustle.
As a full time working adult this class was extremely hard. There are 3 major assignments due a week, you will barely have time to finish one before the next is due. There is very little contact with the Professor, you will be graded by an instructor so grading depends on your specific instructor.
This class gets broken down into small groups. Jessica Harnisch was my actual professor. I have never written so much in a class in my life! It was two big projects with written build ups working up to them. Was not hard, but extremely tedious. I was working on this class homework every single day. Get ready to write, but it was overall good.
The material isn't particularly hard, but there is just a ton of work that must be done to do well in this class. I got an A, but it was VERY time consuming. The discussion boards are long and seem like busy work. The assignments are super long. And my essays (2 major projects) were 8 and 11 pages. Seems like points were deducted for no reason.
Easily the worst writing course I have ever taken. Unbelievable amount of busy work, especially if you work full-time like I do. None of it was challenging, it just never ended; I think I wrote 25,000 words for their course, maybe more. TAs are unhelpful and the professor basically does not exist. Course is in dramatic need of restructuring.
Going into this class, I was terrified having read the reviews, but honestly, it wasn't that bad. It's just a lot of busy work. You are assigned a TA. I had Hays, who was great. You don't have any actual interaction with the prof. You are writing your typical research papers, but you get to be creative with it. Papers have easy to reach word counts
I have taken 300+ courses and this class is the worst Ive ever taken. If instructions for assignments are done, it still won't be enough. Nitpicks on ALL assignments. It's horrible that she's the only 102 teacher for ASU Online. Only good thing is the late assignment policy. Not lenient AT ALL. Even if you explain throughly, you will get a C.
Well first off the class is graded on a three point system. So, if you enjoy getting a 33, 66, or 100 on all assignments this one is for you. For real though, can we not see the issue in this grading system? My TAs are the most annoying people I have ever dealt with. Grade super hard and provide useless feedback. Dont take this class!
You won't get this prof once the class starts, but the others are all great as far as I can tell (I had Shively). If you do the bare minimum you can still pass with a B, you decide what grade you get based on how much effort you put into you projects. You don't need to be a good writer, you just need to try & care. Do not be stressed.
Dumbest class in the world, you have to be an english major to pass with anything higher then a B, the graders are horrible and will nitpick anything you write. I would never recommend this class to anyone, even if you are really good at writing english papers.
I got Erdem after the class divided into smaller groups. Not impressed by her & didn't learn much. Portfolio is busy work and requires tons of time! She didn't even thoroughly read my assignments - one feedback she gave showed she didn't read my assignment closely at all! Cherry picked problems to critique. Take at community college if possible!!
Just as all the other reviews stated, this class on the 7.5 week schedule is horrible. There will be lengthy assignments due Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. It is so much writing on a tight schedule that I felt like I was just trying to survive rather than developing any kind of skill. It also took forever to receive feedback.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The assignments were not difficult, but it feels like a lot of busy work. You do NOT need the text book. My section leader graded the hardest on the draft of each of the 2 big papers. Otherwise grading seemed pretty relaxed. To sum up- Not difficult, just a lot of time spent typing.
Grading is based on opinions and not facts. I was told there wouldn't be enough research to support my writing. When I explained there was and gave examples they became super defensive. I am a non traditional student that has taken lots of writing classes for work and was told my professional memo I wrote was not correct. An out of touch prof.
This professor does not grade clearly and gives confusing feedback. As I told my partner I've been published, I've taken business writing, creative writing, and other writing classes and this professor regularly made me feel like I was a terrible writer. A first for me.
There was a lot of typing in this course. Was quite a bit overwhelming at first, but all the typing does help you build your final paper. Class was not horrible, but being 6 weeks it was very fast. I wouldn't mind doing it again, but if you're doing the accelerated version, just make sure you're on top of your work. Her grading was a bit tough.
The class goes by so fast that there's barely time to gather information for the project. I had a difficult time because she is a tough grader but as long as you at least try and don't fall behind, you'll be ok.
She looks serious but rewards hard work.
This class requires a lot of writing, but with the help of tools like unstuck AI, you can get through the workload. The assignments may feel like busy work, but if you stay engaged, you can still earn a decent grade. Avoid the temptation to slack off.
Writing was graded on opinion, not actual quality. The TAs provided useless feedback. When asked how to improve or specifics as to why I lost points, I was just told to “look closer.” It was incredibly frustrating and showed a complete lack of effort to help students grow and improve their writing skills. A ridiculous experience overall.
She doesn't play around the bush. Get ready to work.
