Before taking the class I was really excite. She is a horrible teacher, thick accent takes a while to get use to. Give few assignments, test over 6 centuries with 8 questions. Extremely difficult grader. No one gets an A, and extremely biased. I couldn't even get an extension when my father had a heart attack@!
worst teacher ever, super hard. she gives no notes just lectures for 1hr 15min. very unfair grader. no gets over a b
OMFG...this had to be the worst course that I ever took in my entire career. i wanted to die in that course. We only had two quizzes (15 points each) each on like a million chapters of stuff...so you study and the chance that the stuff that you comes out on the quiz is like 1/100 chance. her lectures are boring as well. Tough grader. no midterm. BA
I thought Middle Eastern History was a great course. She was a bit unclear with some things on the lecture, but gave us outlines of the material before each class. If you review those before the quizzes and tests, you'll do just fine. The one paper we had was kinda difficult, but I thought she graded it pretty easily. Overall, I'd recommend it.
great person. but she can't teach. knows everything there is to know about the middle east, but doesn't know how to transfer that into her students. quizzes are incredibly unfair and hard. lectures are monotonous and hard to follow. nothing is written on the board during class. worst and most unfair class i've ever taken in fordham. HORRIBLE . . ..
wow i don't even know where to begin... she can't keep my attention, i thought the middle east would be interesting .. um not with this prof. ...shes is an extremly nice person... her 2 quizes are ridiculous no midterm and one paper... she is so confusing and give too much information at once and leaves you grasping nothing she has taught.
wow, I'm actually surprised to hear that Prof Turan didn't give the person who's dad got a heart attack an extension ..she's actually really nice and very intelligent .. she's pretty when she dresses up! she's very willing to help if you contact her and she always responds to e-mails ..she isn't super easy but she's not evil AT ALL ..
haha this is hilarious but sad ...prof turan is an absolutely TERRIFIC prof .. it's pathetic to see how unwilling students are to just READ A BOOK or two for a class in such a prestigious university ..turan is an amazingly sweet and generous grader ...her class was very easy ..she couldn't have made it any easier ..
Dr. Turan is so smart & she tries to keep the class fun & interesting and Intro to Middle Eastern History is definitely one of my favorite classes! There's a lot of reading, and you're required to study and apply some effort, but she's a fair/generous grader & she also really cares about each student. quizzes weren't that hard. Very valuable class
Definately take this class. Intro to Mid East history is by far my fav core class. The material is difficult but very interesting and she grades very fairly. She's a very good teacher, although once in a while she can be confusing. Overall I really enjoy this class. Everyone should take it!
Take Turan if you are interested in actually learning about the subject matter. I am someone who gravitates toward the easy classes, but this was an exception that I'm really glad I made. She is a great teacher who is amazingly knowledgable about the subject and is extremely prepared. Also looks pretty hot sometimes.
Before i took her class i was very interested in ME history. She is a horrible teacher, difficult to understand, biased and completely ruined all interest i had in the subject matter. If you take her you'll have to teach yourself everything. her class is really boring too
extremely intelligent and prepared; all lectures are outlined in detail. great sense of humor and incredibly nice. she is a FAIR grader (if you're dumb/lazy, don't take?)... this class was very enriching and rewarding. midterm, paper, final.
Prof Turan is one of my favorite professors! The class definetly takes a lot of work. She gives a lot of reading assignments but they are not necessary. If you go to class every day and take good notes you will be fine. She is extremely smart and you actually learn something useful in her class! If you are at all interested in this subject take her
shes relli nice but shes relli hard ...which makes her not nice
she's a nice lady n all but she assigns so much work tht its way too demanding even for a nerd i mean cmon we have lives and i dont even mean that cliche-wise but seriously no one could devote tht much time into readings like she expects ...she's just got way too much goin on she acts like we re gettin phdz in dis its relli unfair beware of turan!
One of the most invaluable classes I have taken here at Fordham. Of course the class was hard because it was alot of information and Turan covers alot in a short amount of time. But she explains things very well and there's no major surprises on the test. 2 exams and 1 5pg paper. Definitely take here for history!
Two thumbs up.
take good notes because the midterm and final are composed of questions that come directly from the notes. they're not hard if you study. you dont have to read because participation isnt necessary and everything that is important shell cover in class. there is also a 5pg paper that isnt too hard. the class in interesting & she holds your attention.
this woman is absolutely wonderful .. i love her like crazy .. she is so intelligent and teaches like she has been for a billion years ..she is really interesting and fun and is extremelyyyyyyyyyyy smart .. you won't regret taking her ..she is by far the best female prof. at fordham .. and she is great at what she does ..she is better than a lot!
She is a fine teacher (at least in an intro level course). Pretty easy if you pay attention during class and take notes. Has a Turkish accent but that isn't a problem; class is interesting. Course included some quizzes, five short essays, and a fair final. It's easy to avoid, but she'll take off more points than a mistake or omission is worth.
I am an A- /A student at Fordham..Turan is an extremely harsh/unfair grader. Although she is extremely passionate about middle eastern studies,it is nearly impossible to do well after the first quiz. Turan is the only teacher I regret taking after 2 years at Fordham. Avoid if you can. If you can't, be sure to take excellent notes.
Here's the deal She knows everything about history, but a VERY hard grader and demanding of the information u need to know She lectures for the entire class & write down a lot cause those are ur only notes. She rips apart ur papers. quizzes u have to study a lot if u wanna do well. Theres imp info to learn, but don't take if u want an A
Professor Turan is a great professor! She may be a little harsh at times but she knows her history and is extremely approachable! As long as you don't sleep with class and meet with her during her office hours, you will be fine! Fordham is increasing in the ranks, don't expect it to be easy anymore!
Excellent teacher, very passionate about subject, her lectures cover everything for the final. Grades papers on hard side but midterm and final straight from notes. Very approachable and loves to interact with students. One of my favorite professors at Fordham.
Took her for Modern Middle East. Personally, Dr. Turan is an awesome professor. She's passionate about her subject and Very helpful in office hours. However, her expectations for papers are not clear, and her feedback isn't helpful. Still, If you're ready for a challenging but rewarding class, take Turan
Prof. Turan is a stickler about attendance and paying attention. She commands respect from students. She is very nice, however, and always reasonable. She knows the history like the back of her hand-absolutely brilliant. If you want a class with an expert, take her!
History of the Modern Middle East was not only one of the most interesting classes I took, it was also one of the saddest. As for the papers, just prove that the document is showing what you're learning in class. Also, participation counts for a lot, and it should be fairly easy to participate since it only requires reading the textbook.
Where to begin..You will learn A LOT, but at the price of your GPA. I once infamously received a 4/10 on a paper with the lone comment "this paper lacks proper analysis." Nearly impossible to get an A in this class. I don't even think she could get an A in her own class.
Prof. Turan is a very hard grader, but her class is informative and interesting. Read ALL of her assigned readings, because you will have pop quizzes on them. At the end of the semester you will realize that you've learned a lot from her. Be sure to pay attention in class, final grades are greatly affected by class participation.
She honestly gives bad grades for giggles
I took Islamic History and Culture; it was a very interesting course. Professor Turan gives a lot of reading from the textbook, but it is not discussed in class and never pop up. She is an extremely hard grader and she grades on a personal level. Don't offend her people (I got a 310 on an essay for siding with christians). That essay was worth 20%
Prof. Turan is an extremely hard grader & she takes pride in it. Unless you really like history and you're really interested, take the course. Just be ready. She is biased. Midterm, final, two essays, two pop quizzes & a map quiz. Beware. Don't be fooled; she will fail you. She gives bad grades for fun and "to keep her reputation," like she says.
Here's the deal- I love Turan's Islamic history class. She is a brilliant professor and you learn a lot of very interesting material. I don't regret taking this class, but my grade is definitely suffering. Take her seriously when she says she gives bad grades because she "has a reputation to uphold".
She knows her history, and she wants you to learn it. Love her as a teacher but as a foreign transfer student I got a 610 instead of a 910 for grammar mistakes which is a bit anoying. If you want good grades look somewhere else but if you want a challenging and extremelly instructing class she is your professor
Professor Turan is a great teacher who is passionate about her subject and has an awesome accent. The class is enormously difficult but definitely worth taking.
This is easily the hardest class i've ever taken. 2 pop quizzes(easy), a midterm and final, which are average and 2 mandatory essays which she grades like the DEVIL. they're each worth 10% of your grade and she gives out 3s and 4s (out of 10) like its her job. She's hilarious and super smart, but impossible and will ruin your GPA :(
You will learn so, so much with Professor Turan. Her lectures are so engaging and easy to follow, and the topic itself is very interesting. Yes, she is a hard grader on the papers, but they don't count as much as the 3 quizzes, midterm, and final, all of which are easy. She is a fantastic professor and I highly recommend you take this class.
Awesome. Smart. Enthusiastic. Intersting. Definitely an eye-opening class
I loved this class. It was interesting and I feel that I learned a lot. However, it is not easy. It requires a lot of work, and you have to pay constant attention in class. Take a lot of notes, and you'll be fine for the tests. The quizzes aren't bad either. The papers are very difficult though. Great class.
She comes off as tough, but is actually sweet and hilarious! As long as you write down every word that comes out of her mouth and can reproduce that on the midterm and final exam, you will be in very good shape. Participate in class, complete your papers on time, and you will find this class very rewarding.
Professor Turan is strict, to say the least. You need to take thorough notes and study like your life depends on it for her tests. Difficulty aside- she's one of the best professors I've ever had. She teaches her class like she's telling a story, and she adds great humor to her lectures. Yeah she's tough but it's so worth it for a great professor.
Ebru is easily the most intelligent professor I have had. Her lectures are very interesting and she has so much humor and wit. She is a very harsh grader on papers, but if you write to her standards you will be fine. If you take good notes, you will be able to do well on her midterm and final. But you need every single important detail.
This class is by no means easy. She grades all of the papers unbelievably harsh, but in the end, the midterm and final matter the most, which you probably won't pass unless you know every single little detail. However, it is doable, and it is so worth it. The subject is current and interesting and she can teach it better than anyone else.
She's a tough grader and memorization of the information is necessary; however, regardless of these aspects, this history class has been the best class I've taken so far. Her lectures are never boring and she throws in humor into the lecture to make Islamic History sound like a drama. Take the class!!!
Professor Turan is an amazing lecturer. Her lectures are really interesting and full of knowledge. Love it. and take tons of notes or you will fail on the exams. Don't rent or buy any textbook. It's not necessary. Midterm and Final really killed me and my friend. We wrote notes on three giant boards in order to memorize everything. Super strict
Professor Turan is extremely knowledgeable about all things Mideast and extremely passionate. Her lectures are super interesting but very packed and important. She is one of the toughest graders I have ever had at Fordham in terms of essays and essays in exams. Her class is so interesting but you need to put in 5xs the work you think you do.
Best professor I've had at Fordham. Gives tear-jerking and hilarious lectures, I beg my friends to take a class with her. The first day of class she said, you will hear, people say I'm the devil, this is true. Comically difficult but she doesn't hide the ball and if you work for it, you can get an A. Worth working hard for. Passionate soul.
Dr Turan is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject material. Unlike most history professors at Fordham, she keeps all her lectures interesting and engaging with a touch of humor to add. She is very aware of the fact that history is seldom biased and thus does a good job of always addressing the different points of views and biases. 5/5
Doesn't want you to succeed. Would not recommend taking this class. Went to several office hours, not helpful, not usually available. Lectures are engaging but often repetitive. Unnecessarily tough grader--will say "if you study, you will get an A"-not the case!
Hands down most intelligent teacher I've had. By no means is this class an easy A. Grades the papers brutally. If you meet with her, (always available to meet), she will take the time to review. If you put in the work, your grade will reflect that. Its not that she wants you to fail (as the person stated below), but she wants to challenge you.
This is the AP of history classes at Fordham - it is clear that people are taking this course for a reason. Not for an easy A, but for an intelligent teacher. Ebru Turan is by far one of the best professors Fordham has to offer. Get ready to work hard
Tough class but with an awesome prof. She is very lecture heavy so be prepared to take a lot of notes. She is also tough grader on her essay's but she pretty much tells you exactly what is on the tests. If you take the class seriously, you will get an A.
Insanely inflexible with rescheduling exams. I was sick for a midterm and she was a total nightmare, saying that the only time I could take it was the same time I had another midterm. The dean ended up proctoring but she gave me low grades without any feedback whatsoever. Bottomline: If you miss an exam, don't bother rescheduling, just withdraw.
She is eye-opening and amazing. She can be intimidating but is also funny and relaxed. Very tough grader though. I got a D on the midterm and a B overall thanks to curving.
look she is very specific with what she wants on her papers and tests, but her guidelines are pretty clear. Her lectures are like storytelling time- they're super interesting with a bit of her dry humor. never even opened the textbook just take good notes ( i recommend you audio record them).
Best professor I've had at Fordham. All of her lectures are fun and interesting, class is never boring. Extremely nice and funny. Definitely a difficult class but so worth it.
I would highly recommend taking any class by this semester if you're actually interested in learning about the subject. She does an amazing job of teaching the information and does so in an unbiased way--which is tricky given the subject matter. Be prepared to pay attention and take notes if you want to do well!
She tells you from the get-go what she expects on her exams and papers. Follow the guidelines and you'll do fine. She is a tough-grader though and has high expectations. Do the readings especially from the textbook to understand her lectures better. Overall, work hard, attend the lectures, and you'll get an A.
If you want a class that is easy to follow, DO NOT take this class. She only lectures with absolutely no use of powerpoints or any sort of aid to help note-taking. She grades papers and tests way too harshly and expects you to memorize pages worth of material for each term (there are 20 terms) and spout it back. A smart lady but too unflexible.
Prof Turan is one of the most committed professors I've ever had. Her entire class is her talking about material--no projects, 2 papers, a few quizzes but she tells you in advance. TOUGH grader--looks for the smallest details. Big on note taking--if you miss a lecture you will miss a century of history. Genuinely loved the material and her.
Professor Turan is an amazing professor. She really cares about her students and is a very fair grader. Her lectures are very interesting and she is always available to give her students help. She is by far one of the best professors at Fordham. Take her if you love history!
Professor Turan is a knowledgeable professor. Nevertheless, she is a hard grader and definitely makes you work for your grade. Therefore, do not expect an easy A especially on essays; however, it is possible to do well on tests/quizzes. You should also have a genuine interest in the subject. I do not regret taking her and will be taking her again.
Professor Turan is super straight forward from the beginning that she grades her papers harshly. However, she also tells you exactly what she is looking for when it comes to the midterm/final so it is possible to do well. If you work hard and take very detailed notes, you can definitely get an A in her class.
Professor Turan is a GEM. The workload isn't so bad (you don't need the textbook but it helps), and she's a tough grader, but she legitimately cares about her students and wants you to do well. She's very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, and you can learn a lot. Be ready to memorize, and an A is very much achievable.
Incredibly disorganized. Springs a 2000 word essays on the class out of nowhere, whether we had that class that day or not. One time we got a 2000 word essay due midnight at 5pm on a Friday. However, she is very sweet and if you love history you might like her.
She is very knowledgable and passionate about her subject, but she is a very tough professor. Very tough grader, which is frustrating since there is not much opportunities to redeem yourself.
Prof. Turan is really caring and passionate about the material of the course. However, she is a very tough grader and there isn't a lot of room to redeem yourself. She lectures for the entirety of every class but I found the material very interesting. She is a good teacher but sometimes grades a bit harshly. She has an accent so be ready for that.
Professor Turan is truly a fantastic lecturer. Her knowledge of medieval Islamic history is truly endless, and she never fails to make her classes interesting, informative, and inspirational. She is a tough grader and really makes one work for their grade. However, the feedback she gives is thorough and will certainly make you a better writer!
Prof Turan is extremely knowledgeable about the subject, but she also does a fantastic job of contextualizing the history from various perspectives so you really get a sense of what different conflicting groups of people were thinking. If you know almost nothing about Islam and the Middle-East like I did, I highly recommend this crash course.
took so long to give back graded work. sprung a take home midterm exam on us with two hours of warning on a friday night to be finished by midnight. That really sucked. the textbook was so helpful. SUPER tough grader, doesn't give any feedback on returned work. pretty funny in her own way. genuinely cares about the material.
By far my favorite professor at Fordham. Professor Turan has a deep understanding of the material, but more importantly she knows how to teach. She doesn't want to give an overview but instead gives you a rich understanding. Many may find her grading harsh, I found it very fair. Her lectures have the perfect harmony of engagement, humor, and info.
She obviously knows a lot about the subject (I took Islamic History), but the amount of material you are expected to learn (and read outside of class) is ridiculous. Also, she is not understanding, accommodating, or especially friendly. She does not listen to students or take their opinions into account.
For the sake of your GPA, do not take this class. Prof Turan is nice and funny, but a harsh grader and there are basically no opportunities to redeem yourself. You will be taking notes for the entire class with no slides to copy down, she just lectures which I personally liked. The homework readings help a lot for understanding the content.
This class was a rollercoaster. The whole semester is graded on 2 papers you write on primary sources and midterm and final papers. At first the class is very frustrating and you'll find that the papers are graded very harshly. Also, notes are essential for this class so not a good idea to slack off or miss classes. Miraculously ended with an A.
Took Islamic History as a baby freshman 6 years ago and I still feel scarred by this professor's lack of compassion and humility for her students. I'll never forget I turned in a paper that was 3 lines over the page limit and she did not accept it, regardless of how much work I put into it. I cried in the bathroom after that class.
If you actually want to learn TAKE THIS CLASS! You have to show up and participation isnt encouraged but pay attention. Graded on a map quiz, two pop quizzes (so easy), midterm and final, two essays; everything is pretty easy besides the two papers on source material, but you'll be fine. Professor Turan is intimidating but honestly a comedian.
Professor Turan is a gem. The class is quite intimidating at first but you should absolutely take it if you want to learn about Islamic History. Notes are absolutely critical and based only on her lectures (no slides) so don't slack off. Amazing and hilarious lecturer.
Allow me to save your GPA. DO NOT TAKE HER! she is strict and always super serious. Her readings are VERY complex/heavy and she grades SO harshly. She gives take home midterms and finals HARD. She also does not use any presentations or slideshows to teach. She just talks and you have to follow by her talking. Terrible way to teach your students.
Positives: super informative, learn a lot if you pay attention funny and engaging teaches without slides easy assignments Negatives: can be unaccommodating and can rudely call you out in front of class for small things
She's an absolutely amazing professor and her past CV and deep knowledge regarding world history is impressive on many levels. If you take this class you will learn a lot. HOWEVER, it takes a lot of hard work to get an A and her lectures are all oral, so don't come in thinking that this class will raise your GPA. Also make sure to take good notes.
e.t. was a good professor but be aware the classes are all lectures. The textbook is literally her brain and she just talks the whole class. She has so much to say in so little time so get ready to write during the whole class. She has these papers due, I think two of them, and they are tough!!! She is really nice but a tough grader
Ebru Turan revamped my love of learning. She is tough, and she admits that early on. You show her your best work, and she will give you fair criticism. Be open and communicative with her if you are struggling with the course or anything else that is creating abnormalities in your academic performance. The work is 3 essays, midterm and final.
Professor Turan is so funny, and I love her, but her class is so hard. I took entry-level Islamic History, and it was so difficult. She is the harshest grader, and she knows it. I think her class is interesting, but my grade is really bad because of her. She gives 2 papers, 2 pop quizzes, a midterm, and a final. All of them graded really harshly.
She is a very sweet person but her class is so hard. Her lectures are super fast and she is a very tough grader. 3 papers, a map quiz, and a take home midterm and final. Way too difficult if you are just trying to fulfill a core requirement.
Very hard class but I loved her. All of her classes are lectures and you need to take notes of literally everything. I had two papers, one take-home midterm, and an in-person no open book final. I studied a lot for this class, but I also learned A LOT. She is a great teacher, and I enjoyed her class despite it being hard.
Professor Turan is tough, but the class was extremely enjoyable. Despite it being lecture and VERY note-heavy, it was always very interesting, and she is always open to student questions. She is quite a harsh grader, but if you pay attention take proper notes, and study well you should be fine, as the curve was quite generous in the end.
Switched out of this class a week after and knew I made the right choice. My friend who I tried to get to switch out with me stayed. Lets just say he had a tough time. She demands way too much for a simple core credit class.
Professor Turan is the best professor I've had at Fordham. I took her course, Understanding Historical Change: Islamic History and Culture. The class was demanding, but very worthwhile. The lectures are long and dense, but they feel like fairy tales - she's an incredible storyteller. She was a tough grader, but she gave good feedback.
absolutely ridiculous grading. THIS IS A CORE CLASS. we are here to fulfill a requirement, and it seems this doesn't register. no matter what you do, feels like a B or a C is the highest you can get. take this class if you think your gpa is too high. what a joke
Very difficult, harsh grader, and doesn't take criticism. I took her last year, and I literally wanted to drop out every single day of my life. Lectures and no homework. Worst class ever.
Brutal grader, the highest grade on an essay she gave was 7.5/10. It does not matter if you write down a solid answer for identification questions on the midterm if you don't mention one vocabulary term from in class lectures on the midterm she docks you 15 points out of 45.
Absolute joke of a class especially for a core requirement. Insanely harsh grader, she grades your work in her personal view, if your writing does not match hers she will immediately dock off 30% of your marks. Her office hours are useless and do not help at all. If you feel like your GPA is too high take this class so it can tank otherwise avoid.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I took this course last year and all I can say is that she is a brutal grader and does not care about your grades. Her office hours are all through zoom and not helpful at all. Do not take.
So bad, I regret taking this course every single day since it messed up my GPA and i've been trying to get it back up again. I shouldve dropped this course or picked another professor.
While she is a tough grader, she pushes you to improve rather than accept mediocracy. (She also curves signifigantly) So while her grading can be discouraging, meeting with her, class participation and taking her feedback can result in not only a good grade but also becoming a better student.
I am currently enrolled in the course and it is quite obvious that she cares a lot about what shes teaching and how her students do. I will say the entire class is her lecturing and it can be quite difficult to take notes because she does not use slides and her writing on the board is not very clear. Difficult material but she wants you to do well.
I personally love Professor Turan; she is the only teacher I've had at Fordham so far who truly wanted me to understand what she was teaching. With that being said, it is an extremely difficult class. I think it will hurt my GPA. She is a tough grader on the papers, something she admits.
