gREAT TEACHER, REALLY CARES ABOUT STUDENT SUCCESS, GOOD USE OF EXAMPLES THAT RELATE TO EVERY DAY LIFE
Really enjoyed this teacher...really nice guy...you should get to know him (sit in the front few rows)
This guy is great. he really cares that the students learn the material, he makes a tough subject fun. Highly recommend this guy. The best prof I have had at PSU and I have been here for quite a while.
really knows his stuff and keeps things fun. he makes good use of real life examples to make the stuff more interesting. the best professor I have ever had.
I really enjoyed his class. I would recommend him to anyone. I think his tests are getting harder overtime but I still think he is one of the best A&P teacher at PSU. He is very funny as well
Good Instructor. Can go very fast at times, but has good review sessions prior to the test as long as you have prepared good questions. He knows the material very well and is patient in reviewing. Difficult material in general. Tests get progressively more difficult, but are curved. Recommend him for the tough sciences.
Ed really cares about student comprehension. His class is difficult but worth it.
A great professor you ever find for your AP class, highly recommended. Professor degrauw is capable to answer pretty much most students' question. The exams are very fair. You will enjoy his class for sure.
he is wonderful! Great teacher! Loves the subject matter, very interesting to listen to.
A very very great professor for AP. You will enjoy the class very much because he makes it enjoyable. I also had him for 302 and 303. The exams are fair cuz there are too much materials a person can remember. Make sure you study his lecture materials!
Probably the best teacher I ever had. I dont know anyone that hates Ed. Knows his stuff, great review sessions.
Amazing teacher, a little raw but so is the material. Can explain things in a very down to earth matter, so everyone can understand. Holds office hours after class to encourage communication and understanding. THE BEST BIO TEACHER I'VE HAD AT PSU. too bad he's part time.
Entertaining teacher, lectures don’t follow the text at all. To do well in the class, you need to look at the information in the class notes then find the related topics in the text and read before the lecture. Tests are very difficult even when you know the material. The highest grade on the final was a mid range B, but he curves generously.
Fantastic professor, best I've had so far in my Under-grad education. I only wish every teacher could care as much as Ed does. He really will work as hard as you do to make sure you understand the INCREDIBLY difficult material.
great teacher, good curve
Yeah Ed's great, but he doesn't teach anatomy and physiology like we need to know it. He teaches the chemistry of anatomy and physiology. I think he caters to those who are going to med school and plan on pursuing a PhD and doesn't think about those who may be taking the class to be a dental hygienist or personal trainer. Not too happy about it.
His class is absolutely ridiculous. There is no reason whatsoever we need to be learning the details he requires in our undergrad. If we do need those details, we'll learn them in grad school Just ridiculous.
I laugh at the negative comments because I know those people aren't willing to work for their grade. Ed is by far the greatest teacher ever, at least a mile above the others. He has a great sense of humor and it's true his tests are hard and they'll for sure test you to your limits, but he's ALWAYS there when you need him to help you succeed.
I took the entire year with Ed. He is extremely helpful with questions that you may have and makes class enjoyable! Yes, the material is difficult, but if you put in the effort, than you will do well. Very nice curves, and willing to work with you during finals week if there are conflicts with other classes.Overall, I would recommend him!
Got a laugh of the person saying Ed caters to those wanting to continue on for PHD or medical school. He teaches the exact same lectures and tests at PCC where almost every student is studying nursing. Perhaps you just didn't study enough?
Ed is one of the rare few people who actually cares about his students. If you work for your grade, you WILL earn it in this class. Show Ed a little hard work and respect, and he'll respect you back and go out of his way to help you succeed. If you complain about A&P, you either did not do much work or you forgot that this is an upper level class.
Ed is the greatest instructor i have ever had in my entire school life. He made A&P so interesting and fun. The material is hard, but Ed made it fair. Teacher of the year award should go to Mr.Degrauw!!
This course well prepared me for my classes in nursing school. This is A&P but he goes over a lot of pathophys. Keep your notes!
Two words: THE BOSS
Entertaining and kept lecture interesting; great sense of humor and finds a way to lecture efficiently while involving and engaging the class. THe book was not necessary, seriously, record lectures, print slides, listen to recorded lectures. I bought the book b/c I doubted the 'no book' thing, but its true. Good luck!
Degrauw was born to teach. He has a simple and clear way of explaining complicated topics. He also likes to throw out hints what he will focus on for the test. If you go to the review sessions, he may even throw a few clues to some of the questions. Overall, if you study, and listen to the lectures...you should recieve a decent grade. Don't Slack!
Never have I done so poorly in a class and stil respected the prof this much. Even in defeat I must admit that Ed went above and beyond to help me. This class will drain all extra time out of your life.
You have to work real hard but you learn far more than you ever thought you could in such a small amount of time.
I wish Ed taught all my classes! He is entertaining, personable, and an amazing teacher. The best way to learn in this class is to record the lectures, review your notes and the powerpoints, and go to his mini lecture office hours. Do all this and you can ignore the book completely and still get an A. Seriously.
Awesome professor, all college teachers should be this dedicated, and cool.
So I will admit, I have never worked this hard in my life. Nor have I ever felt such a lack of a social life. But it was worth it. I learned the information, and Ed made it interesting and applicable to real life. Very willing to help you outside of class! Would take him again in a heart beat. Text book is not needed, just listen to the lectures.
Still using his notes for other classes~ Best professor I've ever had!
I did not enjoy Ed's! Now I'm not saying this beacuse it was hard..I'm saying this becuase I felt that he spent too much time joking around and less time teaching material. If you like jokes mixed into lecture he is your guy. Also just be aware that he talks pretty fast so get a recorder if you do deside to take him..it was a lifesaver for me
Teacher is very nice and useful. Always ready to help the students. Very funny and makes class fun to attend, he also likes to pick on people sitting in the middle rows. I would suggest people take his course, it is very good.
I really liked Ed! He was entertaining, and is extremely knowledgeable! He has 2 tests and a final. The final is technically comprehensive but mostly from the last set of material. He has a generous curve so if you try you should be fine. Wish I could take him for all three terms!
At first I really liked him, thought he was funny and nice and made the class entertaining. But as the term progressed I realized that his teaching style was not for me. His tests are very difficult, it seems he goes out of his way to try to trick you. You must know the material inside and out, which I guess is fair, but with a subject as tough as
worst teacher ever! too much overload and he goes so fast through the material its impossible to catch on. He expects you to know EVERYTHING in the whole entire book and thats hard to do when you have other classes that are just as important. would never take him again. Waste of time. Never any good and likes to make fun of people. ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
He goes out of his way to pile on the info, but also to make sure you understand it to prepare you for Nursing/Med school. He will come early/stay late to talk with you even though he has no office at PSU. He's funny and has a way of presenting difficult material in a way that is easier to comprehend and retain. NOT EASY, but worth the effort.
He is such a nice professor, easy going, really helpful, smart. If you ask questions he is always there to answer. Exam questions can be tricky but if you study hard and prepare for the course you will do well in class. Don't forget to record the lecture and listen to it again outside of the class.
Very outstanding teacher. Has a sense of humor. His test questions are based in an applicable scenario to prepare a student going into health care. If you put time, effort and heart into this class. Its a pretty much guaranteed A. Plus its a great way to prepare for A&P for professional schools. Mind as well prepare for the future right?
I was not impressed with his teaching style. Talks way too fast and takes too many personal medical questions during lecture.
ah my last term with ed. loved him. ridiculously hard, but fair. if youre taking this class youre most likely going into the health field, so fair enough. extremely helpful with your future career path. amazing sense of humor, class was like a stand up show. get ready to sign your life off if you plan to get an A, but its worth it with Ed
Has a great sense of humor and makes the class both fun and knowledgeable. This is the most I have learned and gotten out of a science class and plan to take him again for 302. His exams are hard but worth the work.
Ed is awesome. He made class enjoyable and interesting. I've never been this excited about a college course before. He's really funny, but the more sensitive might think he goes overboard. His tests are not easy, but fair. He expects you to understand the material very well. I'm back in school after 10 years, and got an A!
At first I thought Ed was a good professor because he is funny & you can tell this subject is his passion. Very knowledgeable. However on his exams he tends to play mind games with you, & he teases people in class too much. I thought his exams were very difficult, & after asking him Qs about the test later, I got sarcastic remarks from him.
Definitely interesting to listen to, but talks very fast. Best advice for getting an A is to listen to the lectures posted online very carefully and memorize pretty much everything he says and everything in the slides. The book is just there for clarifications. Tests are tricky, but fair. His curves are more than generous (80% usually = A).
I personally hated his teaching style. He went way to fast & really acknowledged/favored people that were pre-med. His website is confusing too. I studied the wrong material b/c he has the PSU study guide hidden under all his PCC stuff. Not my style, but he seems to be great for the pre-med/pre-nursing students.
Dr D is the very best professor I have ever taken in my whole entire life. He is passionate about health and dedicated to his students. Above all he has become my mentor and I am forever grateful that there is someone like him in PCC. Transcribe all of his lectures and study them and you will earn the A u deserve.
If you like recording lectures, take him. Never a question out of the book, never a question out of his slides, or never from his online lectures. Record his voice, on the day you have lecture. Stupidly hard. Not really that funny. Goes way into left field on the simple material. Is just plain wrong a lot of the time.
I loved Ed, he is a great teacher and lots of fun in class. He explains things in a way that everyone can relate to! You also look forward everyday to what shirt he is wearing. Great professor highly recommend him!
Prof DeGrauw is great! He does move fast but makes himself extremely available to answer questions & articulates to help the students listen (ever had a mumbling professor- its the worst!). He is not easy & makes you work for the grade for sure. Use the lecture (available online) & slides & you'll do as well as you want to!
Great teach! Very sad it was my last class but happy I found him.... So enjoyed the class
Great professor. He is extremely competent and a great lecturer.
He is an amazing lecturer and a great mentor. Use all your resources. He gives you access to audio recordings of his lectures - listen to them before class, read the book, then go to lecture and pick up additional information and notes, then read the book for anything that isn't clear, and finally use his practice tests. He's hard, but fair!
Pretty typical A&P class, but he does a fine job. Exams are multiple choice and are quite easy if you've gone to class and paid even the slightest bit of attention.
Awesome teacher, very helpful. Knows his stuff. Lively and interesting which makes the information stick better, wouldn't want another teacher. also very funny and generous with the grade curve when he can be.
People either really like his style or they are really frustrated by it. His lectures are interesting. He does have online lectures, powerpoints, practice questions, etc. He talks very fast, gets off track, and asks crazy test questions. He is a bit condescending if you question him. For me, he makes A&P way more difficult than it has to be. .
He is a great lecturer. His tests are difficult. He has said multiple times that he models them after the NCLEX (which are the nursing exams you take...AFTER NURSING SCHOOL)!! It would be nice if they were more a measure of what we are actually learning in class and not something that the class average is less than 60% on.
Ed's class is like putting a puzzle together. He lectures on topics piece by piece and you are left to put the big picture together and relate each topic to each other. If you have a tough time going from a micro level to a macro this might not be the class for you. I wouldn't have done well w/o the help of my study group and the generous curve
Degrauw is amazing! He is astoundingly knowledgeable. Yes, the class is hard, but it's A&P so that's to be expected. He tries very hard to help everyone, answer questions, and gives a very generous curve. He makes lecture entertaining. He is by far the most highly recommended anatomy professor at PSU and for good reason.
Ed is wonderful teacher and amazing lecturer. His tests are not easy by any means, but, by following his study guides, I've got great scores on all of them(well above class average). He goes out of his way to post lectures online for his students, which many teachers don't do. He also cares tremendously about your success in the class and beyond.
Great professor! His lectures are really amusing and he uses good examples to help you remember. The book is more for your reference than anything cuz he takes his tests directly from lecture and pwr pts. The material is complicated and the tests are challenging but in no way unreasonable. You just have to study. He curves too so that's a plus.
this class is SOO amazing, as is the instructor. so fun and interesting. he is very helpful and willing to answer any question. i wish every teacher was like Ed. even though the subject is difficult. he puts all other instructors to shame.
Dr. DeGrauw is amazing. His lectures are so much fun and his tests aren't that bad. You don't need the book at all. He posts his lectures online which is really helpful and has a very generous curve.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. If you are not pre-med or nursing, don't take it. He goes way to deep into detail and tests on the the fine details, often with trick questions. He grades on a curve but has admitted himself that his tests are meant to fail. Talks way too fast and makes too many jokes, making the material more confusing.
Ed is great. Definitely a hard class but he explains the material well and is always willing to answer questions. He curves his tests too!
I took Herpetology with Ed in the Summer of 2012. Unequivocally the best class I've ever taken in any subject. Ed is excellent. He is fair, clear, fun, and an expert on his subjects. He also loves teaching, which is extremely important. Other professors should model themselves after his ways.
A terrible teacher. He talks way too much and fast in lecture. His exams are ridiculously challenging and has many trick questions. I would never recommend taking his class. Really didn't enjoy him as a professor. He made anatomy much more hard and difficult than necessary. He also once was unprofessional and brought a pocket knife to lecture.
Awesome! Ed is definitely difficult so if you are looking for an easy A don't sign up for his class. His tests are difficult. He is all about application and critical thinking. His test are full of trick questions. He requires his students to know the material past memorization. Listen to the lectors online after class and attend study group.
Ed goes through topics fast, but will often beat important topics into your head. If you re-listen to lectures and make proper notes to compliment the slides you can get through it, and you'll be better prepared for your next career.
Best teacher in the west to learn Anatomy from hes amazing and really funny and also loves to get to know his students and help them in any way he can.
Ed is great. One of the best instructors I have ever had (I have multiple undergrad & grad degrees). He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed, which is why his tests are so hard. He really tries to prepare students for success in their future programs. Listen to his lectures, use the ppts, and talk to him and you can succeed.
The textbook helps a lot, especially the online learning tools that come with it. Ed records everything from lecture so you don't miss anything if you can't make it to class. Challenging but interesting. His tests can be quite difficult but he grades on a curve.
He's tough, and his exams are tough. They're very conceptual--he doesn't just want you to memorize the material, he wants you to be able to interpret and apply it. If you want an easy A, take it from someone else. But if you want to be well-prepared for a healthcare career, Degrauw's your man. Also very knowledgeable about the healthcare field.
Ed is great! You just have to study hard and use your skills when taking his tests. He grades on a curve and his lectures are awesome and interesting.
Ed is a fairly rare breed at PSU, in that he is one of the few teachers employed as a full time educator, rather than a researcher required to teach. This reflects in his general passion towards the material, his deft skill in utilizing teaching techniques to make the material more accessible, and his genuine care for his students.
Taking Bio 302 from Ed was awful. His exams are way too hard and confusing for a 300 level science course. I learned more from my PHE courses that required BIO 301 and 302 as prereqs. May be these PHE courses should be prereqs for his class. If you're not going to be a brain surgeon go else where.
Yes, his exams are extremely difficult, but Ed is a WONDERFUL professor. I had him all three terms and although he kicked my butt, I can proudly say this was the first course in my three years of college, that I walked out actually learning and remembering material that was addressed. Super knowledgable on his subject, and I highly recommend. Study
I took the full year of A&P with Ed and it was by far the best experiences I have had at PSU. Yes his exams are extremely difficult but I have never learned and retained so much from classes before. Many hours of hard work is needed for this class but taking classes with Ed is actually worth tuition money. Highly recommend! PS the book is pointless
He goes very fast. He tests very hard. However, if you make the effort to talk to him he's extremely helpful and informative. Best teacher I've ever had besides my mother. He isn't partial to pre med students or nursing, but knows those are the students typically in his class. All lectures are online w/the corresponding slides. Also very funny.
Very fast teacher. Did not teach very well, just seemed to brush over things. Somewhat arrogant and tests were way too hard.
Degrauw is an awful professor. A big problem is the mis-spelling on tests. He makes jokes, and thinks its great when the average test score is 28/50. I took all three classes and all were the same with the same averages on the exams. His review sessions are also a joke. he does not prepare you for the test, every question is a two, three part.
People say the tests are harder, but they really just require understanding of the material vs. memorization. Degrauw prepares you to understand the material, not just know it. I've talked with countless people about how good he is. If you want to get a lot out of the class, take from him. If you are not open to that, find a Rote instructor.
This biology series was one of the hardest ones I have ever taken! Ed's tests are ridiculous, but he has a nice curve, which helps a lot. If you don't spend at least a couple hours EVERY DAY studying, it will be very hard to pass. However, Ed made the subject interesting and has a bunch of funny stories that help you remember key topics.
Hands down the best instructor ever. He will make you work for it but you will retain information forever for his class. Really expects you to conceptualize materials, which prepares you for upper divisions. This is a guy that deserves my tuition money and to teach!! highly recommended
great teacher, he wants you to succeed as much as you want to. if u ask for help he will help you, if you show him u read the material and really went through and studied as hard as you can he will give u all he can to make sure you succeed. my fav and most memorable class in college. nothing but love and respect for this teacher.
Exams are hard! I recommend listening to previous lecture recordings to familiarize yourself with upcoming lectures - he pretty much says the same things each quarter. You don't need the book; exam questions are from powerpoint slides. If you put in the effort he will help you. He may bump up your grade (e.g from B to A-) if you show improvement.
Ed is awesome!!! Lectures are fun, the best part is lectures are recorded and you can relisten to them later!! Don't need a book everything is straight out of his lectures Test are hard but very doable if you study your butt off! Labs can be fun or hell depending on who's your TA!
Ed is one of the toughest professors I ever had. Will grill you in class, which sounds terrifying (and it was), but it was so helpful as test prep! Tests were extremely difficult, but as far as I can tell, he was a fairly generous grader. Lectures were fast and furious at times, but so interesting and even amusing. I miss this class...
This is BY FAR the most challenging course I have ever taken. If you have the opportunity to take chemistry and/or biology before you take this class, I highly recommend it. That being said, I have never learned more from a course. Ed is hilarious and super willing to help. I have no idea how he finds time to help all of his students. Loved him
Ed is not hilarious, he tries to be funny but it is very annoying. He constantly picks on students in class and sometimes he can be very inappropriate. He is distracting to take lecture with because he rocks back and forth and also constantly makes an annoying grunting sound to clear his throat. Would not take again. Very annoying to listen to.
Lectures are interesting, but get ready to study, study, study. His testing is out of this world, felt like I knew good amount going in to test and would leave feeling like it was so so hard and I didn't know that much after all. Read the lecture chapter before lectures and study and ASK questions. He's very helpful.
Not an easy class at all. However, lectures are actually engaging and everything from his tests are straight out of lecture or his powerpoint slides. Very brutal exams but generous curves for all three of them (he will throw out the outliers) Funny guy, highly recommend!
Ed is hands down the best professor I've had. His tests are difficult, but they challenge you. His curve is beyond generous. Great for anyone who will be taking the MCAT, DAT, OAT etc. Goes out of his way to help students and provide mentorship. He will put you on the spot during lecture. I wish he utilized D2L for grades.
Ed is a great teacher, he really wants students to learn and understand the material. i had him for 301 and 303 but had to take Hancock for 302 (i preferred Ed). Don't get the book, just study using the recorded lectures.
Best teacher I've ever had, hands down no question; also the hardest class I've ever taken. Deeply cares for students who give their best. The immense knowledge he has taught me will stay with me forever, and I know what he's taught me will save lives one day. More knowledgeable than any teacher I've encountered at OHSU; smartest person I've met.
His tests and lectures and tests are geared towards pre-med students, and students who have nothing else to do but study. Material is presented very quickly, and he often goes on meaningless tangents that have nothing to do with what will be on the tests. His study guides are vague, if you are not a confident test taker then do not take his class.
I have taken many science courses prior to anatomy, so that helped tremendously to have that background. For the first exam, I tried reading the textbook and doing notecards but found that to be unhelpful. Go to lecture, as well as listen and take notes on all recorded lecture he send outs. Barely used the textbook after 2nd exam.
You do not need the book he records and posts all lectures. Never thought I would be able to learn for lecture recordingsbut seriously only lectures from what is said in class. Study by listening to lectures while looking at slides and passed with an A. He curves his exams. His lectures are interesting and engaging.
I understand why Ed has a cult following, he's hilarious, however, being dynamic and entertaining does not translate into being effective. He often goes on rants which take away from the actual lecture. 3 exams per term, heavy curve. Not my style of teaching, but I am sure works out for most. Bummed I stuck around for all 3 terms, honestly.
He is very knowledgeable and great for auditory learners. As a visual learner, I often struggled to fully process topics he was explaining in class. His lectures and powerpoints usually cover "everything" on the test, but this course takes a lot of outside effort (his video lectures, online videos, flashcards/diagrams). He is considered a bio god.
I love Ed! Come to class and take notes on all recorded lectures with slides as well. Rarely used textbook. I love how Ed always gives an explanation for why processes work. For example, instead of passing a statement "women bloat during menstrual cycle," he'll also explain WHY. Respect:) Aced the whole year, highly recommend!
This guy is the Herpetology master! He is passionate about biology and herpetology and that carries over to the subject matter. He does go on tangents, but they are still relevant and contribute to the peripheral knowledge needed to be a truly analytical scientist of any kind.
I took summer herpetology with Ed and it was amazing. I recommend everyone take this 6 credit summer course if you can. There's also a summer field trip you can participate in if you want. Sometimes he's a little inappropriate but overall he's a legend and the best professor I've ever had! Wish PSU had him for more classes.
Ed is a really nice guy. His lecture style is engaging and informative but he writes the most detailed, difficult exams I've ever experienced. If you're a detail person who doesn't mind reading, you'll do fine. If you're a big-picture thinker, or if you can't remember what you read, expect this to be the hardest class you ever take.
I took the summer Human A&P course and completely loved Ed. Although his exams were difficult, I did not find them barbaric. I really appreciated that he asked questions to the class/students and utilized multiple learning styles throughout each lecture. He says everything on the exam is based off of lecture but I would recommend reading the text.
Ed was a good teacher. Hes kinda out there but he goes over everything in class that you need for the exams and he will prepare you for whatever program youre going in to. His tests werent easy but I definitely wouldnt say theyre the hardest tests ever like many people have said. I did change this class to P/NP because it was difficult.
Ed is an amazing teacher who cares about his students success. His tests are hard! But I felt like they me to keep pushing myself to really understand the material. Everything you need to know is what he says and whats on the slides. I stopped reading the book after the first exam. I just started re-watching and transcribing his lectures.
He's hot. I bet every girl secretly has/had a crush on him. The man with the brain
My favorite professor at Portland State.
By far the worst professor I've had during my 5 years at PSU. I find his lecture slides to be vague, so expect to do lots of textbook reading. I'm taking his accelerated BI413 course during the COVID pandemic and he seems to take out his own personal angers on the students. Had us all retake the midterm and questioned our abilities as students.
Ed has a passion for Anatomy and physiology and it shows in his teaching. He's an endless pool of knowledge on the subject. I appreciated the analogies he used to help us understand complex physiological processes and his quick email responses. Bi232 is hard. His tests were difficult, but he gives you every opportunity to succeed with and A.
I actually really liked Ed! He is very personable and he can make boring lectures quite entertaining. He gives a lot of bizzare fun facts about what we are learning about which actually REALLY helped me remember a lot of this tough material. He is very accesible and will truly help students with anything from class, LOR's, and getting into schools.
Ed makes challenging concepts intriguing by peppering his talks with relevant stories. He is whip-smart, engaging, and a very funny fan fave, but more importantly he ensures you learn physiology, not just memorize terms you'll forget next week. Ed will make time to work 1:1 and help you get into school.
Ed has lectures that are sometimes entertaining. I found it to be difficult to following along with what he says. He sometimes mentions controversial topics that are often disagreed. His lectures and tests don't align well. Grade is based only on two multiple choice exams and a final. His practice problems were helpful. Ed's not for everyone but ok
Ed's lectures can be hit or miss, but he covers a lot of material. The exams are challenging, so be prepared to put in the work. Using the textbook and tools like unstuck AI helped me tackle the details. Overall, a solid class if you're willing to engage.
