Very blunt and has Cruel Humor. But he has a great class and you learn a lot. {you just have to get pass his comments}
*Barf* I guess he's okay...but GOSH!! He makes you sick just by LOOKING at him! ...pudgy little punk... Not a fun class. As for the grade--GOOD LUCK!!
He ia a jerk, and thinks that he is all that an a bag of chips. I didnt learn anything in his class. It was mostly play time and minimal homework. Just took it and got a free credit.
Quite possibly one of the funniest and best teachers on campus, and his theater shows are top quality.
He incredibly rude and favors his male students. I had completed all assignments, but 1 due to illness, and received A's on all them, but somehow got a C in the class. Other male students that received lower marks than I, received A's in the class. Not fair whatsoeverHclass can be fun, you become close with your classmates, but it's not worth it.
Plays faves but if you are one you will have a blast...if you can take it
Ed is freakin awesome as all get out. He may be a harsh critic sometimes, but hey, sometimes we need a little criticism in order to improve. He has brilliant ideas and is definitely one of the best theatre teachers I've had in the last 9 years! =D
Ed's the best.......or as he would say "We try to be nice to everyone!"
Whether or not you like his character he knows his stuff, and he's a good teacher.
He is a kick ass teacher, we called him Mr. Ed....wouldnt you say he looks like the dad from Clarissa explains it all? i met my girlfriend of 3+ years in his class
He is very insenstive, if you take an acting class you have to be very full of yourself. Becuase if your not he will crush you. I know alot of people who stopped acting because he made them feel terrible.
Very disliked in the high desert acting community. I know not one person who has anything nice to say about him. Usually the only ones who have anything nice to say are people he has favored. Yes he picks favorites.
this guy totally sucks. Hes not helpful, he'll make fun of you. He is a pompous wind bag who thinks he is the best at what he does and the students who like him....well whats that say about them?
pompous, ridiculous, unfair, scary, bright red, short little man...
Ugh. No.

Ed Heaberlin is the most inspirational teacher that I've ever met throughout my whole journey through school. I am a theatre major and all of my inspiration I owe to him. Ed is something to applaud...your actors love you Ed Heaberlin. You are unreal, don't let anyone tell you otherwise...
he a stupid silly little man and he has my pitty

First of all, ed is the most Caring, kind hearted respectful and passionate teacher i've ever had in my life. Just saying he sucks or is stupid is not rating. I suggest you morons get brains and really evalute why u don't like this professor. Ed casts people with talent{either u got it or u don't}, take an acting class and work on profecting your skills, don't get mad at the professor. Ed has changed my life forever and i am eternally grateful to him. Thank you for believing in my Ed.
I can't say enough good things about this professor, Ed puts in the extra time and effort to get the most out of his students. He's wonderful
Mr. Heaberlin; when it comes down to it, is a good teacher. Were not rating his looks here, like some of the genius's have put down, were commenting on the quality of his teaching. He's an excellent teacher. He loves his job and he loves to work with students. He's made me a better actor and i'm proud to say that i've worked with him in just about four plays now. I wouldn't change the people or the experiences i've had in the whole world. Theater is my life, and Ed gave me that gift.
I am absouluty appaled at the comments some of these morons left for professor Heberlin.Until i met Ed, i didn't even know what i wanted to do with my life.I had tried to do acting in high school, but was never successful at landing a part. Ed gave me my first role in "The Crucible" {without knowing me" and i've been acting ever since then.

well said, ed is very UNCARING, personally i think he seems spiteful with his lack of acting skill, u know what they say those who cant teach
Wow, this is like a big argument, I'm under the impression that some people are posting more than once which makes this poll kind of invalid ya? Anyway, I have to say Ed is totally into his favs, and if you're not one of them, too bad so sad for you. I personally have witnessed Mr. Heaberlin belittle students in class. If he was a great teacher, he wouldn't destroy growing talent, he would try to nurture it. No matter who the student is. That's what makes a great teacher. Ed I'm sorry but you fail my exam.
I found Ed Heaberlin kinda boring. His acting exercises seemed kind of dated to me. He kind of sucked the fun out of performing. I didn't know so many people don't like him for reasons that shouldn't count. So what if he looks funny. That has nothing to do with teaching. If you're gonna dislike a professor, do so because he didn't teach you anything.

personally i think hes very rude(and to the other people have you stopped to consider unlike you other people are commenting)
I thought he was mean. There's a difference between strict and mean, and he was definitely being mean. I run into this all the time. I'm sorry but if youre a teacher at a valley college then be that. You can direct all you want but you're not a director. Teach...not direct.
Not a bad teacher.
I had to build the sets for Oh Dad Poor Dad Momma's Hung You In The Closet And I'm Feeling So Sad (long name, I know!) He's one of the most difficult people I have ever worked with. He changes his mind WAY too much, and his plays aren't that interesting, either. Oy!

he says 1 thing and grades by another. how can it be perfect when checked but totally wrong when graded? as other said if u r not one of his favs then u r screwed. i worked in another class that did things 4 his plays and he can't make up his mind then either. maybe he'd be better off not teaching. teachers r supposed to educate not demean degrad

He doesn't know what he's doing. It seems like he makes it up as he goes. Once I asked him about homework, he told me no, and then a classmate called me telling me that one of our projects were due. Projects are due at a drop of a dime, he'll tell you the class period before it's due. He's unoragnized and he insults everyone in class.
i was told that TA 113 was a cross section for eng 113, so i said yay, until he spoke!!! He is riduculous and lame! He thinks the actors are Thee people! BORING!! and he hates any lil sounds like pen clicking or silent gestures, ridiculous!!! I dropped that class like a fly!
Seriously, he's so ridiculous. I'm still attending his Introduction to Theatre class and I haven't learned anything. From now since I started the class he has canceled 9 classes with no ligament excuse as to why. He isn't reliable, he's obnoxious, and he will literally have us sit in the class and do nothing all day. It's BS.
Ed can be both terrific and horrid - he's knowledgeable, can be fun, plays favorites, can be indecisive (not a great thing in a director!), yet I've seen him take someone he thought had potential and help them be GREAT in a part. I get along well with Ed - but I'm not an actor, have nothing to lose, and don't care what he thinks of me.
HORRIBLE TEACHER HE TOUCHES PEOLPE IN PLACES HE SHOULDN'T, YELLS AND CUSSES AT HIS STUDENDS. DON'T EVER TAKE THIS CLASS!! HE DOESN'T BELONG IN THE TEACHING WORLD!!!!
TERRIBLE TEACHER! THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD! HE DOESN'T CARE AT ALL ABOUT ANYBODY OR ANYTHING BUT HIS PLAYS HE'S DIRECTING. CALLED OUT SICK A LOT! THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A LECTURE CLASS AND HE DID NOT LECTURE ONCE! HE MAKES FUN OF STUDENTS, AND TREATS PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT THEATER MAJORS LIKE THEY ARE NOTHING. HE HAS NO BUSINESS TEACHING. WORTHLESS!
He is not a good teacher at all! At the end of a 16 week course he still does not know any of his students names! He cancles class about once a week! I am paying for an eduation not someone to critize me and never show up! Some of us take school seriously!!! He needs to grow up in his own life before he should critize people on their's!!!!
Intro to Theatre and Beginning Acting: What a joke. Thinks he's god and tries to be funny but just plays favorites. Confusing, forgetful, rude, disrespectful, disorganized, and flaky.
I had Ed for acting class and eng. class, he was pretty good in both. I enjoyed both classes and did extremely well. He is a bit disorganized. He didnt play favs when i had him so idk what every1 else is talkin about. And he really helped me out a lot in the acting class. Thanks to him i've started acting again after giving it in in high school.
A bit disorganized.
I had him twice, both times I got an A. With that said, he does embarrass a lot of people in his classes and tends to through some people under the bus. He will tell you what he thinks, good or bad. He doesn't hold your hand and he acts like you are his student and he is the teacher. Don't override him. He hates that!
Ed Heaberlin: RUDE & LAZY. If you don't like being yelled at, or embarrassed, don't take him! He has absolutely NOOO interest in what any student has to say. He "pretends" to FALL ASLEEP during any students' speech. I got an A, but I barely had to work for it. Don't buy the book; you wont use it.
I've had Ed for both a play and two classes (Beg. Acting and Authors of Theatre). At first, he can seem a bit...odd...but that's what makes him so awesome! He's blunt, so if you like to argue, I suggest you stay away. However, he also is a wonderful director because of his bluntness. He'll sit you down and tell you exactly what you need to work on.
very humorous i dont see why there are soo many negative comments about him i enjoyed his class quite much he doesnt take b.s and if u get on his bad side then u stay on it for the rest of semester but i enjoyed him would take him again :)
This teacher is great to those who like to kiss a lot butt. Despite his orientation he likes to discriminate/harass against everything and everyone. He is rude & offensive. When a student tells him that she/he is uncomfourtable he humiliates, insults, threatens & forces them to do what he wants regardless. No means no, the jerk doesnt respect that
I did not learn a damn thing in this clas. He is a horrible person who should never be allowed to teach. Like, what everyone has been saying, be ready to kiss ass to the extreme. He is also obsessed with all things gay. If it's not gay, it's not his way, and if it's not his way you're getting an F.
Believes he is almaighty God, do not correct him if he is wrong because you are just a nobody attending a community college. He treats everyone as inferior to him.
Why this person is still teaching is beyond me. He is beyond rude and disrespectful to everybody and he lives in a delusional world where his opinion is the only right one.I think one of the rudest things he has ever done was eat during one of the performances. It makes me wonder where the rationality is when someone gives people like him power.
The rudest thing he?s ever done would have to be either, telling me that "my voice made he want to stab daggers through his head?(I have a speech impediment, there is nothin I can do about my voice) or fallin asleep durin his own show and snorin so loudly that the actors had to stop and whoever he was with had to wake him up 4 the show 2 continue.
Everything must be his way or the scripts way. Altough some thing would be funny and/ or creative, he won't like it. Didn't really learn much from him. Learned more on the book "Audition" rather than him.
Personally, I didn't have a problem with his attitude, but his class was very unorganized. He would miss class without warning and rarely had a lesson plan. His criticism was sometimes helpful, but I probably would not recommend him to another student :/
I don't know why the comments on here are so negative. Ed's very funny, and a very good teacher. He cancels class a lot if he's directing a play and he's very blunt, but his class was still the highlight of my week. He's very clearly passionate about what he does, and he tries his best to make theater fun for everyone, even skeptics.
Ed is complicated. I like Ed, and I think a lot of people misunderstand him. Hes blunt and a tad rude but this is acting, welcome to the business. I find that helpful. And for people who say he cares about nothing, that man cares about his shows and actors more than ANYTHING. I guess he's not for everyone tho.
Oral Interpretation. Ed is a great guy IMO, and I'm assuming a good director as well, but as far as teaching he needs some work. Only a week and a half left, we have NEVER used the book. Waste of money and time ordering it. Never got a syllabus either. Despite that, the class is very fun (if you go) and easy if you put even a lil effort into it.
Ed takes some getting used to. As long as you don't back talk or try to be smart during class you will be fine. He can be a bit rude sometimes but if you want to go into the acting business, you're going to have to deal with people like that a lot. He usually gives good acting tips. He is an interesting and funny guy. Just follow his rules!
I guess there's a lot of rude people in VVC these days. My experience in Public Speaking was more positive than what's being reported here, but there were a lot of adults in my class (people over 35, working) versus High School Grads. Very patient, if people are rude or talk back during your speech, he stops them or tells them to leave.
Ed can be a hit and miss with some people. Like already said, he's very blunt. I personally thought that's what made him funny. He will respect you in his class as long as you respect him and the class (IE don't talk when he is). The best advice would be, if you think a question is dumb ask a classmate first. He will put you on blast.
Ed is a great teacher, he expects student's to listen and not speak while others are presenting, but that is a respect thing for the other students and should be done. He expects you to listen, but is willing to repeat himself when asked. He follows his syllabus, which I find to be very helpful. I love his teaching style, and recommend him.
Wonderful class. Instructions are clear, if you mess up, you're not paying attention. Public speaking is hard, speeches every class. Ed was encouraging and kind in his remarks and compliments the progress made each week.
Ed, is a great acting professor, He gives great feedback and has a influential personality. He'll give strong feedback and loves to help you in any way he can to become a better actor.
Took him in the winter, I found him disrespectful at times when i wanted his feedback on my speeches/outline . I am surprised i passed because i felt like i struggled so much understanding exactly what he wants because he was very picky. But the class is easy, just that i felt like he didn't like me. I Would Recommend this class for 6WEEKS ONLY.
He is fair but not everyone can see it. He treats everyone the same. He does his best to encourage his students. He works very hard as a director and teacher. He has a good sense of humor.
Ed is a very caring teacher, I took him in winter for interpersonal communication. He really made our class communicate and work together. I felt it was a great experience learning while getting to know your classmates. If your a person whose afraid of public speaking, well he's going to do his job & break you out of your shell.
Public speaking is hard, but not with Ed. I passed with flying colors, he encourages you. He ensures everyone is respectful. I found his sarcasm to be hilarious. One of the best classes I took. Took 6 week-winter.
Took Ed for the winter 2017 semester and his class was one of my favorite classes I took at VVC. He is very funny and sarcastic, He makes the class communicate with eachother which helps out A lot when you do a speech in front of them. I would highly recommend this class.
I took his class long ago but left after he made an terribly rude comment towards me. I think if he had tried to put it into a more constructive instead of a destructive comment I wouldnt had been so upset. Saying he would rather kill himself then see my performance again its helpful.
Ed is the worst. I had the displeasure of working with him. For those that continue reading his reviews when they say"that's the Biz or anything like that, it's not like that at all in the real performing world. People are kind and nurturing. He's rude and the definition of degrading. Please take precautions when taking his class, everything annoys
Ed was a unique teacher, he didn't really teach at all. He expects his students to already know things in the class even though it's BEGINNING acting. He also said the textbook was required and we never even opened it, and he never gave us a syllabus, either. He's VERY sarcastic and has a dry sense of humor, but will respect you if you respect him.
He's a great professor he gives you feedback on your speeches and it's fairly easy to get a high score IF you follow the guidelines for the outline and you show some enthusiasm while giving your speeches.
This prof. is pretty horrible. He does not teach at all. He assigns the class into groups so that we can basically read and teach each other during class. I felt like he was only there to babysit us. He made you buy the text, which was $200 USED. And never handed out the syllabus -_- He is very unorganized. Ended up taking a different Prof instead.
He is amazing and is a goof ball I love him he has a kind heart and cares so much about his students I wanna take another class with him asap
Ed is super unorganized and disrespectful of everyone in the theatre department. He wastes money on productions in ways that are completely unnecessary. VVC would do so much better to get rid of him instead of pushing the other people out.
Class was constantly canceled. We never got a syllabus and he tried lowering my grade because I couldn't go see one of his silly plays. I had communicated to him my tight schedule and had to go to the dean to get my grade fixed. My GPA is not a joke for his petty, childhood acts.
Amazing and has the best sense of humor
Isnt the best organized. Just do what he says and you'll pass with an A. You dont have to buy the book, I was one of 4 that bought it and I wish that I didnt. Great teacher, just dont be weak.
His extra credit opportunity was mandatory. He was very unorganized and lost peoples work within the class. He doesnt take his job seriously enough, he gave a lot of attitude over minor things and any time questions were asked he was rude about them and very snappy. Class was overall easy, teacher was just snappy.
He's a good professor I don't know why people rate with so badly. He has a sarcastic sense of humor but student need to learn to take a joke but I would recommend him
I had Professor Ed in the spring 2021, I really enjoyed his class so much. He was very helpful and gave great advice. It was a lot different than actual face-to face class would be, but overall the zoom meetings were fun. I would definitely recommend him to others who plan to take this class.
He is a really good professor just one of the harder ones in Theatre because the theatre life is not easy. If you are a class clown you won't last long in his class but if you show dedication it is an easy pass. This is my second class with him and I enjoyed it again. Just be ready to read and talk a lot in his classes with presentations.
Great person but boring professor, I took this class for experience not requirement. Terrible I withdrew, seems like he plans the lesson 5 min before class starts, took a whole month to give the syllabus. I was socializing in the class more than acting. The VVC theatre depart need to be better organized, prepared & want to make students get excited
I took this class to work on my public speaking skills but got so much more out of it. The whole class became like a family by the end of the 6 weeks, and it would have never been able to happen without Heaberlin's compassion. This teacher truly loves what he does and if you give him a chance his caring will rub off on you too.
I took this class because it was a graduation requirement from VVC and I honestly would have taken the other public speaking teacher. This teacher was mean, horrible. He's always late with grading and would post assignments at 12AM and expect us to do it by the next morning. He is a sensitive, arrogant teacher. Wouldn't recommend.
Professor Heaberlin was not great with communicating and his criteria was not clear. He was also harsh at times.
Professor Ed, was an amazing teacher I took him my first year for CMST-106 in person and I loved that class. So easy we barely did anything. He is an easy grader and as long as you show up and at least participate you will definitely pass his class without a problem. I would take him for every communication class if I could. Great professor.
