LOVE HIM! I absolutly hated english before he came along. I just passed it in high school and once I got into his class I got an 80% on my paper. I have NEVER gotten and 80 in english before. He is more than willing to help all his students and he doesn't make english so difficult. They're needs to be more english teachers like him!
the best prof at MUN hands down!!he's extremely approachable, ever willing to help you out, genuinely concerned and takes keen interest in your progress.just go to class "EVERYTIME",make yourself familiar to him,do what he says.. and you'll love english like never before!i hoped to get him for eng 1101 aswell..but hard luck =(
By far MUNs best prof. Take this man, best thing you'll ever do. He's such a fun and entertaining prof. Very funny as well. He's so dedicated to helping you it's unreal. I went from having ok marks during high schools to B+'s and A's in his class. Highly, Highly! recommend this prof best thing you'll ever do!! A+++
Great teacher. If you want the max value out of your money, take him! I've heard absolutely horrible story's about a lot of profs, but you need not worry with Kavanagh! Extremely helpful, and interesting! Concerned mostly with your progress, and wants to help you in any way. I've actually seen an improvement.
THE BEST PROF EVERRR!! This guy is the reason i decided to choose english as my major and im very dissapointed i dont have him this year for 1101. He is by far the best prof I ever had. He got me so interested in english and reading and he is honestly such a great person in general. Awesome Prof! 5 stars *****
BEST PROF AT MUN. This guy is awesome. He has so many stories to tell and it makes class every interesting. He has a great sense of humor. He also really knows what's talking about, and your writing skills will improve. I hope that he teaches 1110 so i can have him again.

I had him for 1080 and 1110. Very sensible - he knows what he's talking about. He's very clear on what he wants your writing to be like, and what's expected of you. Great prof, very recommended. Your writing will definitely improve. Make sure you go to class, so he can get to know who you are. He loves it when you go to his office/writing cen
This is the best Prof ever. He has restored my faith in the English Dept. He is extremely helpful as long as you make the effort.
Best Prof ever. Your ability to communicate & write effectively will undoubtedly improve. Outstanding teaching abilities. Restored my faith in the English after 1080.
Best prof i ever had! Makes evrey class interesting, and helps improve your writing skills. Everything is clear, you know what he wants and he is very open to helping you outside of class, reading your papers before you hand them in. Very positive attitude and interesting to listen to. LOVED HIM! Take his class!
Omg I love this man.. He always has an entertaining story and he's so helpful. The class can get boring every now and then but go to every class cause he takes attendance and will make u easier if u go. He will do anything to help u get a better mark. I got an 88% on my first paper that I thought was trash... he's great
best english teacher ever! i hated english in highschool and now english is my favourite course. he is great to listen to and tells some good stories sometimes. theres only been a couple of classes that i thought were boring. you need to go to class to do good though, BUT GET THIS TEACHER!!!!
I love this man. The only reason I chose to do 1110 is so I can get in his class :)
Awsome prof! willing to help, very clear in what he expects. I do suggest going to class for his notes and hes more helpful to those who go to class regularly. Great guy. I highly suggest getting him as a teacher.
LOVE! He genuinely loves the course, loves teaching and you can tell he actually wants his students to do well. Not a SUPER easy course, but with him as a prof there is no reason to not do well. Best prof I've ever had!
Great class, loved the teaching. Didn't drone on about pointless topics. Gave a lot of good information about readings. Stuck to essay's so the course was easy. Good marker, very fair but clear in what he wants beforehand so if you get a bad mark you probably deserved it. Would take another course by him any day.
Ed Kavanagh is the best prof I've ever had. He tells very awesome, vivid stories that relate to the topics being discussed in class. I would definitely take another class of his and recommend him to anybody. Loved going to his class just because he explained everything perfectly. Always willing to help, even with work unrelated to English.
What a great teacher and person. I'd recommend his course to anyone. He always has an interesting story or opinion to share. He gives lots of feedback on essays. He's very helpful if you ask questions. Not an easy course but if you go to classes and complete all the essays, you'll do fine.
This prof was AMAZING. I actually have no bad things to say about him. He gets you interested to learn every single class. Had interesting stories to focus on and he gave adequate time for things to be done. He understood its a first year course and guided us along the way. I took it fall of my 08-09 year and am glad I had him. His stories were ama
very helpful
great prof. easy to understand and does not expect much. easy marker and gives easy questions. excellent
Excellent prof. Always interesting to listen to and is always willing to help. Does not have high expectations for first year students and understands that a lot of them aren't great writers. Would recommend him to anybody.
Excellent prof. Always interesting to listen to and is always willing to help. Does not have high expectations for first year students and understands that a lot of them aren't great writers. Would recommend him to anybody.
Best prof that I have has so far!!!! I did not enjoy English in high school, but in doing his 1080 course, I actually like going to english now!!!!!!!
His classes consist of him talking for the entire time. Although they are very boring they are very helpful. He has improved my writing a lot. I recommend him to any struggling writing because he is a generous marker and makes time for anyone.
Ed is a wonderful teacher & fascinating person who tells interesting stories about his childhood during class. He's a really hard marker, but is willing to meet with you to give you writing advice.Take his class-I can guarantee that your writing skills will improve with his help! I got an A in his class.
Excellent prof. Very willing to work with you. If you show interest in the course, he can help you improve your writing immensely. Would recommend him to anybody.
Ed is one of the greatest professors at MUN! He is a very interesting person and an extremely fair marker. Before every essay he is more than willing to meet with you and help out in every way possible. No matter how your writing skills are, they will most definitely improve after taking his class. I enjoyed 1080 so much I took his 1110 course! :)
Good prof although I found he could be very ignorant sometimes when going over your essay with you. Was very blunt. But overall did improve my writing.
I hate english but Ed actually made it much more enjoyable and actually "fun". He is one of those teachers who is extremely involved, if you want help he will help you as much as you want. He checked over many essays for me and I did very well on them all. He is funny and he is fun to listen to. GET HIM IF YOU CAN!!!
GET THIS PROF!! He is for sure one of the best english professors, without a doubt. He's extremely helpful and doesn't mind you bombarding him with questions! Definitely recommend
Did not like Ed Kavanagh AT ALL. He was very rude during class and make me not want to attend at all. He was also awfully boring (would teach from projector). Barely used textbook. He would take attendance every class and definitely use it against you when responding to emails and wanting help with essays. Coming from an English major.
Not helpful.
Good prof for first year English. Helps improve your writing skills and cares about his students. Course isn't very interesting with a lot of reading.
Awesome prof, very helpful, easy marking, is forward about what he wants in essays and is a very fair marker. Always willing to help you improve and offers re-writes if he feels you deserve it. Very nice, always kept class interesting. Was my favorite class to go to this semester. Would recommend to anyone for English 1080!
Excellent English professor. If you're not sure how to write properly, he will make sure you know how by the time the course is over. Just follow his advice, and ask him for extra help if you need it, and you will do well. Recommend for first years! Also had him for English 1110 and he was great in that as well.
Really helpful! The class is pretty boring, but he can teach you how to write! I went from 75's to high 80's with Ed Kavanagh! Don't be afraid to ask for help though. He is not an easy marker, either. Do the work, get results. Don't do the work, don't get results.
Ed is an incredible prof. He knows his material and is very connected with Newfoundland culture. He'll tell funny stories and relate works covered in class to stories that he has written and published. Will make you work hard, and wants to see you improve with your writing. Highly recommend - but be ready to work.
Professor Kavanagh is a man dedicated to his work and is willing to help you succeed. His a very fair marker, also I would highly recommend going to his office so he can grade your essay in front of you he will tell you exactly what you did right and wrong, this is a great learning experience. He helps you improve your skills so much.
My writing improved drastically after taking this course. Although I did not get the mark I wanted, I learned so many important things that will help writing in my future. Would recommend to any first year student
Ed will improve your writing skills. He lets you pick your own topics to write on, and grades you based on coherence, grammar, style, proper format, etc. He's also a professional editor, and he will spot nearly every technical mistake you make, and explain exactly why it's wrong. He'll also read rough drafts of your essays if you go to his office.
He is a great prof overall, very helpful and really wants you to do your best. Very friendly and makes English so much more exciting. Would definitely take a class with him again!
Ed was a huge help and my writing improved drastically while taking his course! You can go see him before you pass in your essay and he'll go over it with you and allow you to fix your mistakes before you pass it in. His classes can be a little dry, but the extra help he offers makes it all worth while.
Just has this professor for English 1080 and was great. I learned a lot about writing. Takes occasional attendance, and only helps students that have been in class. He grades okay - if you listen to what he likes in an essay then you should get an A. Grades in class essays harder than out of class essays. I have him again for next semester english
He is a bit of a tough grader, you definitely can't write your paper the night before and expect a good grade. He knows what he's talking about, and he can really teach you a thing or two about english if you attend his classes. Good luck trying to read his feedback on your papers though, worst penmenship ever. Also puts a word cap on essays.
I had Ed for English 1110 and had to do the course over with a different prof. He's a hard marker. If you struggle with English I wouldn't recommend him. Although his lectures wasn't boring and you could learn something from him.
Had this prof for 1080 and by chance 1110 too. HATE this man. You have to go to every class or he automatically doesn't like you. He liked me as I did this so was a little easier of a grader but still not good. So much work for an A. He would make fun of the entire class before he would hand back a paper. Rambled on about so much random stuff.
Ed is a good english prof, but do not take his course if you want an easy A. He believes that no paper should be given any higher than 610 on a first attempt. He would often clown around in class, but if you do the same, you are going to get kicked out. There were no tests in his class, only papers.
Ed is a great prof in that he knows his stuff and if you take the effort to go to class and pay attention, you will learn quite a bit. In saying this, he is a very hard grader and very particular when it comes to writing. I wouldn't recommend if you struggle with English or want an easy A.
Ed was a good prof but if you struggle at all with English then it's probably not a good idea to take his class.
Papers are very long compared to those of other professors teaching the same course.
I found Ed to be quiet sarcastic and really didn't mind putting down students. He always offers help however his tough grading rubric almost made the extra help pointless. He knows a thing or two about English, but he is definitely not the friendliest prof i've ever had, and his lectures are LONG and DRY. Would not recommend.
Tough professor, grades extremely harshly, demands perfection. He is incredibly knowledgeable however, and considering I am the pinnacle of perfection, I get along quite well. Not dry at all, but repeats himself sometimes, takes attendance (75% of the time), and can talk down to his students. But not me. Me and Eddy go way back.
Tough professor, overall mean guy. Got an 80 in his course but he was super rude in person and his classes were mostly stories about him. Did give good criticism on papers but thats probably the only positive thing I can say.
Extremely rude. Has a very pompous attitude and belittled me and my work. He makes it incredibly clear that he's an accomplished author and editor, and he seems to expect his students' work to be of that quality. Overall a terrible professor, so if you can, avoid him at all costs
One of the best profs I have ever had. Would HIGHLY recommend for English 1080. It's not an easy A, but he will work with you and drastically improve your writing. Taking this class with him has improved my marks in other classes, as I progress through my degree.
Great teacher. If you go to most of the classes and take notes, this course is really easy. Make sure to budget enough time to write the essays and you should get an A. Very helpful in office hours and after class, so if you're having trouble/getting bad grades, go in for extra help.
Kavagnah is an absolute gem. He is very clear as to what is expected for his essays. He will also go over it with you before you get a grade to help improve your mark. He will show you how to research properly and a bunch of other tools that are relevant to all courses. Plus the books not expensive, and usually interesting.
Definitely not an easy A. He's a very hard grader, and makes you feel stupid for things you get wrong. He has many office hours and always encourages students to come see him for help. However my classes always clashed with these hours so I never could. He takes attendance regularly and will is beyond strict on phones.
Dr. Kavanagh definitely knows what he is talking about., however calls students out in class for doing things wrong. However, his grading criteria is very clear and he gives very good feedback. He encourages people to talk to him outside of class, and he will give you back your essay to fix your mistakes and re-submit it if you go to see him.
Ed Kavanagh was a great prof! He was very specific about what he wanted in essays. He grades good for first-year students. He is very understanding and wants you to do well. However, make sure you attend class, he takes attendance and he takes it very seriously. I would definitely recommend.
He genuinally cares if you do not get the mark you wanted. GO TO CLASS!!! He might let you re-do something and get a better mark. Tough grader but he aims to make better writers. Would definitely recommend him.
Avoid this prof like the plague... He so consumed about speaking on his own successes in life that he forgets he has a class to teach.
I absolutely loved Ed! I took him for 1090 and 1110. If you have a passion for English and genuinely want to learn more, I 100% recommend him! I received an 80 overall in the course but you have to work for a good mark. If you're looking for a prof you can slack with, he's not the one. However, if you actually want to learn something, take him!
Great prof. Really wants all his students to succeed and become better writers and makes every effort to help you improve. Attendance is a must because he doesn't post anything online and he often gives extra chances to people who show up (re-writes, bonus essays, etc). Tells you everything you need to know and more. 10/10.
His grading seems very vague, it spooks me. You never really know what he's looking for in writing assignments. It is nice that he is helpful in his office hours and goes out of his way to make himself available and how he gives second chances, but in class, he often rambles on about how first graders would do a better job learning the material.
Hes a good prof in terms of teaching. However, he is rude. He belittles your work and makes you feel stupid. Super tough grader.
Amazing proff
Ed is a tough marker but my writing has improved so much because of it. Takes attendance daily, so go to class. Go to his office hours, he will help you. I can almost guarantee you will not do well if you dont, especially on the first assignment. Wants VERY specific things in your work. Allows rewrites/extensions for those who have good attendance
Looks for very specific things in your writing, and expects to see you pick up on concepts he mentions in class. He does track attendance, and doesnt post much online. If you routinely attend class there are options to redo past assignments for a better mark. Does occasionally talk about his own works a bit much. Overall not bad.
Looks for very specific things in your writing, and expects to see you pick up on concepts he mentions in class. He does track attendance, and doesn't post much online. very tough grader, kinda makes you feel stupid and belittles your work.
Ed Kavanaugh is an amazing prof if you're ready to put in a lot of work. He prioritizes his students improvement in his course, so if you see him for help after class, he will extend deadlines and provide specific feedback. Getting a good grade is not easy, but he makes is possible by giving his students specific instructions.
I have never been great at English and Ed didn't help with that. No matter how hard I tried on the essays I always ended up not doing well. Attendance is mandatory if you want his help, if you don't show up, he will certainly not help you. He makes you feel very stupid and always belittles your work. I would not recommend taking him.
Gave no tests but had to write 7 essays the whole term. Attendance is a must as he does check. If you go to all classes he gives the opportunity to go to his office hours for very effective feedback numerous times. Lectures were often repetitive. He frequently got upset about studentswriting not being up to parwith his standard. Overall he is solid
Attendance is mandatory. If you dont miss more than 4 lectures throughout the semester, he will give you the opportunity to rewrite your paper and change your grade. He's a tough grader so i would recommend you don't miss the lectures.
Ed Kavanagh is very clearly passionate about his teachings. My course included 7 essays, and no exams. As long as you attend class every class, he will give you extra time and second chances on your essays if you do poorly. He loves it when students see him at his office about their assignments, and will give you helpful feedback.
Ed is fantastic, I have him for English 1090 this semester, and I find him great. If you attend his class, you can guarantee you pass the course. Attendance is tracked, but if you don't miss many classes he will let you redo your essays if you do badly by going to his office hours. Office hours=free marks.100% recommend!
Lectures are very dry and boring, tough grader, attendance is mandatory
6-7 essays + one in class- not too crazy but toward the end of the semester we had 3 essays with a week and a half maybe two weeks until they were due which is not a lot of notice when you have work for other courses. great as a person, funny stories but lectures were dry. very harsh grader! if you don't go to office hours you're pretty much doomed
He's a great teacher. We did 7 essays throughout the term, which was an insane workload, especially with four other courses, and his classes are almost all lectures. There is a system to getting good help-- attendance in class, asking questions, being ahead of source material, and going to office hours. He will extend due dates if you do this.
great prof! his lectures are interesting, and he allows you to redo essays if ur attendance is good. he gives great feedback and very clear criteria for what he wants in your writing. attending classes is a must because he doesnt post much on brightspace. quite a tough grader but if you take his advice to heart your writing (and grade) will improve
He gives a lot of leeway to students who don't miss any classes (takes attendance to keep track). Provides many chances for you to have him proof read papers and correct anything that is not meeting his expectations. Overall he's a great prof.
I wouldn't say attending his class is mandatory but it sure helps. Easy extra marks if you don't miss class as well as going to his office hours. Will also let you re-write essays if you haven't missed many classes. His lectures are very boring and dry. Also, belittles students work. Refers to everything as "baby stuff." Overall, he is decent.
attendance + going to office hours are mandatory to do well in this course. pretty hard grader, belittles students works in front of the class. told me to my face that i should change majors because my paper was not up to par (i got an 85 on the paper in question)
Dr. Kavanagh's impact was profound. His dedication and teaching excellence were evident. Office hours were crucial for my success. He emphasizes effort and reward, making attendance crucial. While non-attendance isn't penalized, it is important for grade improvement. I highly recommend his courses for academic growth in a supportive environment.
Kavanagh's lectures can be very dry and repetitive and attendance is mandatory for success. The Course load is generally light with about 6 papers and 2 in-class 'tests'. Although the lectures may be dry, I did learn a great deal about writing from this class. Kavanagh is also is very strict about phones and technology during lectures.
Lectures were dry and he was not approachable or friendly. Despite this, if you attend classes and pay attention, you are likely to do well. If you struggle with English and reaching out to profs for help, you may want to avoid. If you just want someone who teaches well, and you couldn't care less about personality, you'll be fine.
Utilizing office hours and attending lectures will lead you to success in this course.
I don't think he knows how to use a computer
Would highly recommend taking his courses, learned more in the past 13 weeks than I learned all of high school. He is a fair grader and if you attend class he gives you a chance to fix things you didn't do as well as you wished you did.
Ed Kavanagh is a great prof, he explains his expectations well. He is easy to reach and helpful. he is a bit traditional on how he does class as he don't like electronics so have a pen and paper ready!
By far the best prof i have had at mun. Most profs, you can tell they dont care about their job and are only doing it for money. Its not hard to tell that Ed is there for opposite reasons. This is the first time i have felt like ive gotten anything out of a course. Will definitely take again
(Creative Writing). Speaks down to you, derogatory towards the class and humiliates people. Very pretentious and thinks his way is the only way. Each class you awkwardly have to read aloud your weekly writing project to a group of classmates split into groups, so Ed doesn't have much time to give you any instruction or guidance. I did learn though.
Show up to class every day, turn all essays in on time, try your best, and you're getting an A. He's a tough grader, but he'll proofread your essay during office hours and tell you how to fix any mistakes in there. He can be a little condescending, but if you can ignore his less than ideal personality, this class might be the easiest A ever.
I definitely think that he is a good prof in terms of learning about fluent and efficient writing. My essay quality definitely improved. However, he does not give out any mark over a 90, and they are rare. Definitely a harder grader. VISIT HIS OFFICE HOURS. He will read over your essays very thoroughly and gives perks to students who visit him.
This man definitely knows his stuff, however I truly believe those who like him as a prof are people that were favored by him. In my class, he had a certain group he loved, who had done 1090 with him previously. He joked with those people, gave them good marks. The rest of us could never do anything right. He is mysoginistic at times + no laptops.
He is an awesome professor!
He does attendance even though he's technically not supposed to. His feedback is very good, but if you don't come to 99% of his lectures don't expect over a 70%. Comes off very strong but is actually very sweet. He's not very open to people having different writing styles than him.
I found that he was a pretty decent English prof, he spent time going over what you can improve on when he graded essays. There were 7 essays in total, two 75 min in class essays and 5 out of class essays. No final exam, just a final essay out of class. I would recommend bringing drafts of your essays to his office hours or getting help from peers!
For most; the VERY late turnaround for essays (topics were released 8 days before due date for essay worth over a third of the course!) and limited availability (office hours are packed before essays due) outweigh the pros he offers for perfect attendance. Definitely made me a better writer though.
Ed is a good English professor. He is forgiving and will sometimes let people redo assignments if they did really bad. He considers bumping people's grades up at the end of the semester if they had perfect attendance and made an effort. He doesn't allow any technology during his lectures or give much feedback on work unless you go to office hours.
