This teach is by far the worst thing that has ever happened to me, he is absolutely horrible at doing his job. He has no Syllabus, so when he goes to make the test half the stuff on the test he never mentioned in class. Never take this man for any of his classes!
worst teacher ever! wants all students to fail! Mumbles during lectures. Into the whole meditation thing. Wears beads and drinks gallons of tea out of milk cartons during class. Does goofy dances during class to make us laugh. No one laughed.
HE IS AN IDIOT
Worst teacher ever, he never explains anything well. he gave the same lecture three times a week. he is fat and dumb. he wears beads and stragne japananimation hats.. he always drinks ice tea and makes fun of people who sweeten their tea. he had a concussion and still taught the class he would't even give us a class off. worst teacher ever!!
He's all over the place, I have no idea what's going to be on the test, he is just very unclear about what you need to know
he is random and hes really unkempt. he repeats himeself constantly and just sucks at teaching
The worst of the classes I have, most of his lecture is all over the place. His test are relatively hard and his class is just hard to grasp. "I need my caffeine" Yeah, you might need caffeine to stay awake in his class, yet you will still doodle in your notebook for half of it. All I have to say is to avoid him unless you're really interested in Astronomy, hence the two.
I Liked Mr Kimball's class. I thought it was easy...he lets you know if something will be on test. He does get off-topic a lot and tells you a lot or info not needed, but he tells you if its not. I hate science but I had fun learning in his class. I'm disappointed to see so many bad reviews of him! I would take him again if I needed.
Mr. Kimball was a fun class and an easy A that I did not have to work for. Only it is important to be in class and take notes. Write everything he writes on the board and just study the class material, you don't even need to buy the book. It's ebough with the notes. Also, his final exam is super easy, i studied like 2 hours for it and got an A.
This guy was horrible. His lectures would repeat from day to day with maybe 5 minutes of new material on the end. Not to mention i was bombarded with Yiddish words from start to finish. I apparently caught schleprocy in his class seeing as how i was called a schleper almost every day. Stay away from this class
what's with all the negative reviews? he gets off topic, but the class is never boring (if you appreciate random humor) he he's very pationate about what he teaches. he repeats stuff, but it makes it easier to remember stuff, and less stressful if you miss class. i think he's a great teacher, and i would take him again.
Waste of time, avoid it to all cost. His lectures are boring because he constantly repeats himself and sidetracks. He is never clear as to what is on the test.He happens to offer extra credit assignments at times but in all its not worth it, I thought astrtonomy was interesting until he gave it such a boring reputation.Bring a pillow to class!
I admit, this one is a wierd muffin but overall, he isn't bad. He does overuse the Yiddish term "schlep", he does repeat every lecture at least twice, he does bring a jug of tea to every class AND he can make the material pretty confusing. But he gives decent notes, he bangs on the board when something is important, and the final isn't cumulative.
Amazing teacher. These people probably gave him a low rating because they didn't pay attention and failed. He is an awsome teacher and is very passionate about what he does. He will always answer any questions and makes it impossible to fail a test if you just got to class and listen. I didn't take a single note, just listen when he bangs the board

Love him! Best class ever.
He definitely knows his material (like a professor should), and has a really good sense of humor. He fits my idea of the stereotypical guy interested in science and astronomy. His tests were slightly difficult, but I'm sure anyone could get an A if they study or do all of their hmw. He's a pretty laid-back, understanding guy.
He is very knowledgeable about the course, however his teaching ability should be questioned. He says that he is partially deaf, however when teaching in class, he doesn't project is voice so the entire class can here him. So if your sitting in the back forget. Plus, he tone and choice words are very insulting.
Overall a pretty descent class. I did have a hard time hearing and understanding him especially when he banged on the board. His voice did not carry well. His sense of humor carried the class. I enjoyed some of his antics. Just show up, take notes, do your homework, and pass the test. That's it.
Kimball was a great teacher. No one on class would read the book and he knew it. So, being such a nice guy he would go over and over the material to ensure everyone success. Wish I would have read the book a little more. Very smart and nice man for sure!
He gets off topic and his class is a little boring. He repeats stuff, like every class he says the same thing, so if you missed one class its no big deal. Remember what he says when he bangs on the board because that will be on the test. Tests are 30 questions and they are easy. I think he's a great teacher, and I would take him again.
Awesome teacher. Actually helps you LEARN the material! I still remember a lot of what he taught simply because he repeated the information every day. I loved his teaching style because my brain never felt crammed with information, I just added a little every day. Awesome teacher. Work hard. Pay attention.
Overall i learned a lot but he is a pretty boring teacher. Good at it, but can be boring. Listen to when he bangs on the board, take notes and you'll be fine.
He's pretty boring but I guess I learned a lot. If your a girl I dont recommend him because he's pretty rude to them for some reason. I personally couldn't stand his jokes but at least he tried to be funny. You have to read he textbook if ya want to do well on tests. Theres a homework assignment every once in a while but they're not ough at all.
I hated this class, and really didn't like the teacher. No study guides, nothing is written down so all the notes have to be taken verbally, and he talks fast especailly when he shows up late and rushes through the end of class. Baseically had to self study because his definitions are very vague.
Bad teacher. Not clear in the notes. He was very scattered and did not stay on the same subject throughout one class. Would also teach the same lesson day after day. Late to every class and grumpy due to "lack of sleep" or "lack of coffee." Did not answer questions straight foward and easily got an attitude. Basically a teach yourself class.
AWFUL! I found myself laughing at him in class a lot at the craziness! His test don't really cover the material from the classes & I found that if you take your time on your test he will check the first page and tell you if your right. He repeats himself and goes off on random thoughts. This is the only class I have gotten a B in at TCC.Good luck.
Awesome teacher, lots of lame science jokes, lots of pictures of space, mutiple choice tests, no essays, no papers, bangs on desk for test questions, repeats important information, explains the cosmos well, speaks loudly with enthusiasm, very passionate about astronomy, don't argue with him, don't be late, don't be late, don't be late, fun, fun....
He is kind of boring but makes some interesting points. He is helpful by giving a lot of extra credit. He also helps on test day by lecturing some in class right before the test and tells you if you got one of the questions wrong and lets you correct it. I don't recommend taking this class in the morning. I slept a little bit in the class.
WORST class I have taken at TCC. Teaches until the last second of class and often keeps you after. BORING lectures and no study guides. Really lame jokes and I actually find myself getting annoyed with him. Dont sit in the front!!! Only good side is he doesnt take attendance and he bangs on the desk when he says something that will be on the test.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I was actually interested in astronomy until this class. He drones on and on about nothing important and he'll lecture about the same thing 3 days in a row because he's forgetful. He was always late to class and was a half hour late to the 7:30am exam. He is very grumpy and not helpful with anything.
Awesome teacher! absolutly loved his class. he's very repetitive so its not bad if you miss a few classes. tells you to read the book, but no one ever did...but he knew. and wouldnt give you test without going over the information. gives a few homework assignments but they are easy. tests are short, sometimes confusing. he's always late.
HORRIBLE teacher! DO NOT TAKE HIM! This class was 4 months of totrure! The only saving grace was that I ended up with an A. The day of the final, he was 15 minutes late. Then made us wait 45 min before giving the exam. Seriously, this class is a joke. Its a waste of time.
Very clear in his lectures. Bangs on the board when you need to write something down for a test. He is quite boring and laughs at his own jokes. Show up to class expect him to be late and expect to stay after. Easy class if you read.
Very clear in his lectures. Bangs on the board when you need to write something down for a test. He is quite boring and laughs at his own jokes. Show up to class expect him to be late and expect to stay after. Easy class if you read.
Somewhat interesting class and the guy knows his stuff but is a complete doooooosh to his students. Acts like he's teaching a 6th grade class. Ask a question and you'll most likely get "it's in the book". Just shut up and take notes. Don't yawn either.
DO not take this class. all he ever does is bang on the board, and his lecture notes are useless, his powerpoints are nothing but pictures and not helpful for taking notes. and attendance is mandatory and he gives a pop quiz everyother class. He never tells you what the tests will be on and doesnt ever seem to want to answer students questions.
He's a great teacher. Really funny and interesting. Definitly take the class.
Awesome class! He bangs on the board whenever you need to write down something that will be on the test, so there is no need to write down absolutely everything. He has a dry sense of humor. Very funny. He likes it when people read the book. Don't yawn. Or text.
Very knowledgeable, likes what he does and is good at teaching. Very helpful, you will need to develop those study habits and make the best use of your time if you plan on taking his class.
A good instructor, but I recommend coming to class every day. Attendance counts a lot, with extra points given for showing up. He has literally the easiest homework assignments I have ever had. He pounds on the desk or the wall for emphasis; just write down what he is saying when he pounds on something, study it, and you will do well on the tests.
I wouldnt recommend taking this teacher. You cant really hear him well, and hes very boring. Attendance is worth alot of points. He is always "sick", "tired". or in a "bad mood"
He is particular when it comes to class participation and preparedness from assignments but he is not unreasonable by any means. Follow his instructions in the syllabus and you're golden. He is very helpful and personable all you have to do is reach out to him for help and he's right there for you. I enjoyed this class very much!
I guarantee all of the negative reviews in here are from slackers that always came in late, never bothered with the homework on top of being told they HAD TO pick a science. For those of us with discipline, structure and a plan to life, this class was most enjoyable and the professor a true gem! I wish he formally taught math too.
Just show up, right down anything he says when he bangs his fist on the board, and make sure you read the book and follow up on your notes. Do that and the class is gravy. Even if it seems like he is often in a bad mood, don't be afraid to go to him for help if you get stuck on something. He will do his best to make sure you get it.
Before this class I had no interest in Astronomy. Good teacher. Tells you exactly what he expects from you and is very willing to help. He speaks for fast during his lessons, but he makes it clear of what you really need to know. He is a no b.s. teacher and very straight forward. Show up to class, do the easy h.w, participate, and expect an A.
I had him for express session Astronomy, so there was a lot of information to be packed in to 8 weeks. If you attend class regularly and pay attention, there is no reason not to have an A. Pet peeves: Electronic devices, absenteeism, rudeness. He will help you as much as you want. After this class,I wanted to change my major. Funny&captivating!
Pros- Class is very easy.Take notes and attend class. Easy A. Cons-He honestly is the biggest distraction. He constantly complains about students being late, yawning, and cell phones. My biggest problem was that he wouldn't just shut up and teach the class. He just gets frustrated too easily and is ironically the biggest distraction
He is my favorite teacher. He knows his subjects very well; he has taught practically every type of science. Astronomy was a breeze, he is extremely clear about what he will put on texts/quizzes. Also, he only takes attendance on quiz/test days which are rare. His ratings only suck because students at TCC are INCREDIBLY rude and disrepectful.
Ed Kimball is certainly one of my top 5 favorite teachers I've ever had. He's also one of the smartest and wisest people I've met. I was already interested in astronomy prior to taking his course, however, even if I hadn't been, Prof. Kimball loves the subject so much that he could make even the most uninterested person excited about science.
Very cool professor! You can tell that he loves astronomy and he makes the material very interesting to learn. This is a lecture course, but if you take good notes and review them consistently you will get an A in the class
I was very excited about taking Intro to Astronomy. Prof. Kimball replaced my other prof. (Scarlett,Carol) she was SO SMART. She got a new job in California. I was really disappointed with Prof Kimball. His lectures are really boring and all he does is bang on the wall at the most broad statements. If you like AST. DO NOT take him. Pick another.
I've seen a lot of negative comments, but I thought his class was awesome. Occasional homework assignments that are beyond easy and quizzes the other days for attendance, but it's all on what he teaches. All lecture, drops the lowest test with good attendance. I wish there were more AST classes, I'd take them! Loved him, one of my favorite teachers
Definitely one of my favorite teachers! The subject was awesome! He was a bit vague sometimes, but always went over the important things numerous times. Made me love astronomy even more. Easy extra credit assignments. Easy hw assignments. Attend class, read the book, take good notes, and COVER YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU YAWN. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Attendance wasn't mandatory but quizzes were given often for your "attendance" grade and they would often be one question and sometimes the same one. He hates yawning. He bangs his foot on the desk when something is important...which is handy, but made me lose respect for him since he couldn't find a good method to tell us what's important.
I took an express class with him so attendance was mandatory. He bangs on the board when something is important which is very handy, because whatever he is talking about will be on the test. If you have trouble just talk to him. He will help you anyway he can you just have to talk to him.
He is passionate about Astronomy for sure. I found it hard to stay interested. Oh, and DO NOT yawn! He will call you out QUICKLY!
So the yawning thing is true. He really detests that. But he's a good teacher, though he'll get sidetracked easily, and bangs a lot so don't get sleepy and jolt out of your seat. Anyway, super easy class, if you're looking for an easy science, try this or oceanography.
Bangs on the walls a ton, unless you are interested in astronomy, don't take the class. Lectures can be boring, and attendance is definitely mandatory, so you'll be stuck. I got good grades but it was definitely not fun to do.
One of the coolest teachers I've had at tcc. Passionate about the universe and very clear on test questions.
Makes learning about our universe a blast!!
I was very excited to take astronomy until I came into this class. Professor Kimball is very unclear and hard to understand, if you take this class buy the textbook because that is your only way for learning. He bangs on the board a TON to express ideas. He usually comes late and always tired and has to have his caffeine. Avoid this class!!!!!
Decent enough teacher but his attitude towards the students in my class was very poor. He scared everyone into silence. Spent more time getting onto people for having phones out than he did teaching which was much more distracting. The extra credit star gazing was planned last minute which was impossible to go to if you work. Save yourself.
Class is interesting, but you will fly through material. Show up for lectures, 95% of the tests is from that, if you pay attention, you'll pass easily. If he bangs on or kicks something, take a note, because what he just said will be on the test, guaranteed. Put away phones, and cover your mouth if you yawn and take a few notes and you're good.
Honestly, he has to be one of the worst professors I have ever had. He doesn't like when you ask questions and he talks too quickly and doesn't get his point across clearly. He'll go in depth about stuff that he won't even test you on. I'm in the six week course and I DO NOT recommend it! There's not enough time for all the things he wants to teach
Professor speaks quickly and really unorganized during lecture. Annoying tendencies.
Super distracting professor. All he does is talk about annoying things and make comments about students coming in late to class, having a phone out, how he didnt get enough sleep the night before class and how he needs a sip of caffeine to keep him awake. His lectures are truly irritating. Dont take his class unless you absolutely have zero choice.
This is a hard class. I took it because Astronomy sounded interesting, but this teacher makes me fall asleep. Most of the information in his lectures aren't on the test. There isn't a specific textbook for the class, yet a lot of his tests are based off of readings. There is a lot of memorization for certain parts.
An absolutely brilliant professor! Passionate about astronomy and you learn much more than what is tested on. I wish he taught more classes at TCC!
As long as you do what he says you will have no problems with him. His test are easy as long as you take notes from his lectures, and he will beat a table or wall or something whenever something he is saying is going to be on the test.
This guy is great. A bit cranky sometimes; real astronomers work nights! He is for REAL Had Dr. Scarlett for the first part of the semester, but she got a job at Lewis -Livermore Lab in Pasadena- excellent professor. I would take any class either one taught . This is for Professor Kimball, you will read and you need to take notes, and go to class.
Very awesome professor as long as you attend class and ask questions. Gives clues to what will be on exams. Extra credit available also.
Mr. Kimball was a great astronomy teacher. He is passionate in what he does and it shows. He helps to give hints on what is going to be on the test while taking notes. If you take good notes then the test and quizzes will be a breeze. Would recommend taking his class! I am a business major so science is not my forte and it was still a clear class.
Professor Kimball's lecture was kind of a drag to me. Reading ahead of time will help you in the long run. Beats a wall or table to inform you specifically on what will be on test. Extra credit is there because I honestly had an F and my final grade turned out to be a B. I most def would take again. Don't judge a book by its cover.
Relies on lectures and not the book so don't buy it. The lectures are so boring, you can't focus and pay attention. He gets very distracted by people yawning, students coming in late, and how tired he is. Everyday without fail he mentions how little sleep he got the night before and how he needs caffeine as he steeps his mug of hot tea.
Pretty great professor. Just ask for questions if you need help. So far, pretty great.
He was good. Just make sure to come to class and study for the quizzes. There are lots of them.
No study guide, but he tells you what to write down. The class is hard but interesting.
i took him back in spring 2014. I had no problems with him. I took note of everything and studied. well, i didnt have to study much because i learned everything so fast. but other people would complain about him. I thought it was funny when he bangs on the wall and cabinet
Either you love him, or you hate him. Professor Kimball is one of a kind professor, truly passionate about astronomy which makes him and the class very interesting. But if you have no interest in learning astronomy you could find him and this course a bore. Kimball can get off topic which will make you lose your focus and interest in the course.
Not a bad professor, but make sure to pay very close attention in his class, he relies very heavy on lecture and the powerpoints have no writing, just pictures and diagrams. No study guide either but he does make you aware of what will be on the test. He definitely knows his stuff but will be condescending when you ask questions so be careful.
Unprofessional and unorganized. Quizzes would be given on information we have not went over. Homework would not be returned or gone over, until days before an exam. Rotated classsrooms excessively and complained it was always to hot. Always late to class, overall I will not take him again.
A passionate professor. You have homework, daily quizzes, and multiple choice tests(minimum 50 question with a 100 question final). He will kick you out for cell phone use. He also likes to joke which can be a hit or miss. He does a review or answers questions right before the test. He does beat on the board to indicate what is on the test.
Lectures are GRUELING if you are not interested in Astronomy! Class is a easy B if you show up and take notes. Easy pop quizzes so take notes during class. Everything he says is on the test when he reviews. !! Study all your stars, trust me. He is not as scary as the comments make it seem. Astronomy isn't my forte, but i learned a lot in his class.
Doesn't teach this course like the intro course that it is, is late to class every day, obnoxiously beats on board, is never clear about what the tests are on, does not seem to want to help a student when they have a question, expects students to already know everything about Astronomy, gives horrible feedback, doesn't explicitly answer questions.
Very passionate about the subject and respectful to students. I felt like I learned a lot in his class. Tests/quizzes weren't very hard if you payed attention in class. He was late fairly often, but that's just about my only problem with him. I thought he was a wonderful teacher overall and I would take his class again FOR SURE.
He has this awful habit of pounding the board or kicking the desk when he's trying to emphasize something important. He tries to make jokes or relate to the class but he's so old and out-dated that it isn't funny. He's always late with his cup of tea, and mid-lecture he'll stop twice to say "gotta get my caffeine going" and sip his tea. Annoying.
Lectured a lot. Banged on the board every time there was a quiz/test question so Its really easy to know what to study for. All I did was study 1 hour before every test and the final and got an A in the class.
He talks a lot and tends to ramble. He hits the board to hint what you need to know. You can tell he loves astronomy. The tests are really easy. He references the book a lot but you dont need to read it to pass AND he gave us a link to the book for free which was clutch. Not really homework, had a few quizzes but not bad.
He's a cool guy. He makes repetitive corny jokes and he's late to class pretty often but overall he is still a nice guy who really tries his best to teach. Legit just show up to class, take notes and you will do well. Don't buy the textbook because you don't need to use it, he claims you need it but no one reads it and he covers everything in class
The whole class is a long lecture every single day minus test day. His lectures get extremely painful to sit through. He treats students like 5 year olds- very rude, no respect. Every day he argues and threatens to throw kids out of the class for no reason. When u ask a question he responds with "its in the book, u should know" then doesn't answer
An easy A, but a frustrating A. Tosses people from class for having their phones out and for yawning too loud. Bangs on the desk to emphasize test material, but that makes it hard to hear what he actually says. Very short, 1-question quizzes. Always shows up late. Book unnecessary. Never posts grades to Canvas. Not a bad guy, but a bad prof.
Super cool guy who knows a lot about what he's teaching. He tends to stray away from what he's talking about and is all over the place. Lectures are scary but test are actually easy if you study. Doesn't emphasize attendance but it plays a big part in your grade. Would probably want to be somewhat interested in astronomy to really enjoy this class.
Kind of an oddball, but was funny at times. Very lecture heavy and a stickler about phones or other electronics. Says you need to read the textbook but it doesn't matter. He's clear about whats important and as long as you show up and take notes you'll pass the tests and the class.
Attendance is important because the exams are heavily based around the lectures. He emphasizes the importance of learning as opposed to memorization. Textbook isn't important and there's very few out of class assignments. He's a little scattered but super knowledgeable and will throw in unrelated but interesting facts regarding the material often.
One of my favorite professors I've had at TCC. He's a little scattered but give him some time, he's older. You can tell that he loves what he teaches & is very knowledgeable about the subject. Attendance is mandatory because the tests are based around his lectures. If you show up to class & sit in the front you shouldn't get anything less than an A
